Words Grant Gavin

A

s we all start winding down towards the year-end break, it’s important to use this time to reflect on the year that lies ahead. Setting your sights on 2024 will come down to how you adjust to market conditions. Remember, there is no such thing as a tough year, only tough conditions. Success stories abound in all markets. Everything is possible. Here are five important points to consider when planning for 2024: • Know what you want. Be clear about what you want to achieve, and don't limit your aspirations. Sadly, most people are clear on what they don’t want but struggle to clearly define what they want. For example, “I don’t want to be poor,” or “I don’t want to be overweight.” State your goal in the positive. What do you want? Set that as your focus for the year. • Speak it out loud. Once you have set your goal, tell someone. Don't keep your ambitions a secret for fear of failure. A form of universal accountability comes from knowing that other people are aware of your goals and are watching your progress. Use it as motivation. When you keep your goal a secret, it’s too easy to quit on yourself when things aren’t going well. • Get focused on the right activities. All goals are achieved through actions or activities. If you want more success, take more action. If you want

different results, take different actions. Whatever your goal is, break it down into the most important activities, and then focus on the disciplines required to stick with your activities every single day. Discipline is doing the things you need to do, at the time you need to do them, whether you feel like it or not. • Don't expect instant gratification. Your need for instant gratification will only destroy your dreams. Momentum can take time to build, and resilience is therefore a necessary character trait. Be resilient in the early stages when you are not seeing results, and trust in your plan. Success is built over the long term, so do not become despondent in the early stages. • Find an accountability partner. Most people, when left alone, will give up too soon. A good accountability partner will hold you to your goals and activities because they want to see you succeed just as much as you want to succeed. Find that person, whether it be a coach, mentor or friend, who will meet with you to check in on your progress. Accountability is a powerful asset when building your dreams. Success is fairly simple. Set your goal, find the correct blueprint, approach your activities with discipline, and be resilient enough to see the plan through. Have an amazing holiday period and a successful 2024!

Balayage and sun-kissed highlights are still popular choices for summer. Pastel colours like lavender and coral are also trending this season, adding a playful touch to your look. Which hairstyles suit active individuals for outdoor activities? Active individuals can opt for practical styles like high ponytails, braids or headbands to keep their hair secure while enjoying outdoor activities like hiking or biking. Can you recommend some lowmaintenance summer hairstyles? Low-maintenance options include short pixie cuts, tousled beach waves or a classic bob. These styles require minimal effort and still look great in the summer heat. What's your top summer hair care tip? Don’t forget to stay hydrated! STARTER

Ingredients

Method

• 4 crayfish tails • 1 cup fish stock • 1 cup Bridget's Creamy Garlic Mayo (available at SPAR Tiffany's) or any mayonnaise you prefer • 3 tbsp tomato sauce • 3 tsp Tabasco sauce • 1 tbsp brandy • 3 tbsp cream • Shredded lettuce • 2 avocados, cut into squares

1. In a pot, bring the fish stock to a simmer. 2. Cook the crayfish until they turn white. Be careful not to overcook. This usually takes about five to seven minutes. 3. Once cooked, remove the crayfish from the stock immediately. Do not leave them in the stock, as they can continue cooking and become tough.

4. In a mixing bowl, combine the mayonnaise, tomato sauce, Tabasco sauce, brandy and cream. This mixture will become your flavourful Marie Rose sauce. 5. Allow the cooked crayfish to cool for a bit. Once cooled, chop them into bite-sized pieces. 6. In a serving glass or on a plate, place a layer of shredded lettuce as the

base and arrange the diced avocados on top. 7. Gently mix the chopped crayfish with the prepared Marie Rose sauce. Ensure the crayfish pieces are coated with the sauce. Now, spoon the crayfish and sauce mixture over the bed of lettuce and avocados. Garnish with chopped red onion and gherkins.

Chef's tip Replace the papaya with mango for the ultimate summer salad!

Ingredients • Olive oil • 1 clove of chopped garlic (for 4 prawns) • 1/4 cup chopped chilli (for 4 prawns) • Large prawns (about 4 per person), cleaned, deveined and shelled • Mixed lettuce • Sliced red onion • Fresh sliced papaya • 1 cup chopped coriander, Mint and parsley (combined) • Halved cherry tomatoes

For the Dressing • 1 tsp chilli flakes • Juice of 1 lemon • 1/2 cup good-quality olive oil • 1 tbsp soy sauce • 1 tbsp honey • 1/2 cup chopped coriander for garnish

Method 1. Heat a bit of olive oil in a pan. Quickly cook the chopped garlic and chilli in the heated oil. 2. Add the prawns to the pan and cook them until they

change colour. Do this in batches if necessary, as overcrowding can lead to stewing instead of sautéing. Set the cooked prawns aside to cool. 3. In a large bowl, combine the mixed lettuce, sliced red onion, and fresh mango cubes. 4. Gently mix in the cooked and cooled prawns along with the chopped coriander, mint, and parsley.

5. In a separate bowl, prepare the dressing by whisking together the chilli flakes, lemon juice, olive oil, soy sauce and honey. 6. Drizzle the dressing over the salad. Start with a portion of the dressing and add more to taste. Toss the salad to coat it evenly with the dressing. Sprinkle chopped coriander over the top for a fresh and colourful garnish.

If you're serving the dish immediately, add the mussels to the pot. Make sure they're well-coated with the sauce. Please note that if you're preparing the dish in advance, you can cool the sauce down at this point and refrigerate

it until you're ready to serve. When you're ready, reheat the sauce before adding the mussels. 6. Cover the pot and cook the mussels just until they open. This should take about five to seven minutes. Discard any mussels that remain closed as they may be bad. 7. When the mussels have opened, you can serve the mussel pot as is, with the flavorful sauce, alongside some crusty bread to soak up the juices.

paper, use a plate to draw four 20-centimetre circles. Flip the paper so that you can won't transfer the pencil markings to your meringue, and grease the circles with a cooking spray. 7. Place meringue portions on circles, spreading each one to make a five-centimetre thick disk. 8. Bake for one hour, then turn off the oven and allow to cool inside the oven. This helps them set and keeps them from cracking. Assemble the Dessert 1. Once completely cooled, take one meringue disk and place it on a serving platter. 2. Whip the heavy whipping

cream until it's thick and holds its shape. You can add a little powdered sugar for sweetness if you like. 3. Spread a generous layer of whipped cream on top of the meringue disk. 4. Add your choice of fresh fruit on top of the whipped cream. 5. Place another meringue disk on top of the fruit and repeat the process, until you've used all your meringue disks and toppings. 6. Drizzle melted baking chocolate over the top for a delicious finishing touch. 7. Serve immediately or refrigerate until you're ready to enjoy.

People

If you do not go after what you want, you'll never have it. If you do not ask, the answer will always be no. If you do not break out of your comfort zone, you'll always be stuck in the same place

Tell us a bit about the work you do I work in film, but it doesn’t feel like work because I love what I do. While some film jobs can be frustrating, especially when I’m passionate about a project, it mostly feels like fun rather than work. I enjoy every aspect of filmmaking, from conceptualisation and scripting to shooting, directing, editing, sound design, and colour grading. This broad understanding is helpful when working on larger projects as a director or director of photography, as I understand each person’s role. Many successful filmmakers have experience in various film roles before becoming directors, and I believe this diverse background sets them apart from others. How did your film career begin? I didn’t study film, due to financial constraints after my father’s death. Instead, I saved money from casino jobs and travelled, recording videos with a mini DVD camcorder. Despite having no formal training, I enjoyed making videos inspired by what I saw on TV. Upon returning to South Africa, my uncle recommended me to a fishing show, called ESA, based on my filming skills. I excelled there while learning the basics. Eventually, I started my own production company, Hellmot Productions, using the skills I acquired. I’ve been working in film ever since.

Who are the significant people in your life who helped you along your journey? My little family (made up of myself, my supportive partner, Nicole, and our two kids) is incredibly important to me, teaching me valuable lessons every day. I’m grateful for the role I play in their lives. Nicole has stood by me during tough times. My mother has also been a pillar of support whenever I’ve needed her, and my siblings are pretty cool as well. What are your happiest and saddest moments in life? In 2017, I survived a severe car accident while filming in Clanwilliam, Cape Town. The BMW X5 I was filming from overturned, leaving me with a severed colon and two broken pelvis bones. Stranded without any aid, I faced the reality of dying far away from loved ones. Despite the odds, I managed to hold on until help arrived even lasting a 12-hour trip to the hospital. I slowed down my breath completely to delay the amount of internal bleeding and septicemia. I closed

my eyes and pictured Nicole and myself with two children playing on the beach. After enduring a month of hospitalisation, Nicole and I were overjoyed when the doctor finally gave us the green light to go home. Today, I see every day as a blessing, especially with my two beautiful boys. My scars serve as a reminder of my resilience. Can you share a favourite work story? There are so many great stories, but one comes to mind. When I worked at ESA, we travelled all over South Africa and sometimes abroad to film fishing expeditions. On one trip to the Transkei, we used three helicopters for a week to explore the region quickly. We would find spots to fish, land in suitable areas, and even fly over breathtaking sites. One day, I flew in a news chopper with Dean, the pilot, and he performed thrilling manoeuvres, including flying over a waterfall. When we headed back to our hotel in Port St Johns, Dean

decided to take the craft to the top of the mountain near the airport runway. He flew over the runway to the drop, elevated to a good height with the nose to the sky, stalled and dropped backward. My heart sank into my chest and the craft spiralled down to the ground! It was awesome! Despite the adrenaline, we landed safely, and the experience was unforgettable. Who has influenced you the most, and what lessons did they teach you? My father has been the biggest influence in my life. Even after his death, I still consider him my mentor. He passed away in a car accident and, coincidentally, my accident happened on the same day as his car accident all those years back when I was 15 years old. He was hardworking, honest, and giving qualities I admire. My mother is another important figure, selflessly dedicating herself to others without expecting anything in return. As a parent now, I appreciate the sacrifices my parents made for my well-being and am grateful for their love and support. What project are you the proudest of? Recently, I’m most proud of our film The Spider Web, featuring renowned surfboard shaper Spider Murphy from Durban. The film has been successful in various festivals, winning the Jury Award at the Port Shorts Film Festival and Best Cinematography at the Toronto Documentary Film Festival. Despite the challenges, the story was easy to tell thanks to Spider’s character. The film was a collaborative effort with Mike Frew managing the crew, Kevin Rom handling the filming, and Simon Mulholland capturing aerial shots for our drone company, Done Analitix. In addition to The Spider Web, I have created another short film called Amanzi Olwandle, which won the Judges’ Choice Award at My RØDE Reel, an international film competition. This film, based on a true story about surfer Avo who lost his brother, Zama, due to a tragic shark attack, has inspired us to pursue a feature-length version. Currently, we are seeking funding options online, leveraging our awards as a strong proof of concept for the project. Scan the QR code to watch The Spider Web, directed by Timothy Hay.

growth and future project possibilities, and Ballito looked promising. The business has grown from strength to strength offering a full decorating and design consultancy, a manufacturing arm and installations all over the country as well as outside our borders.

Schanè Anderson, Interior Designer, Creative and Founding Partner of OLALA INTERIORS, started the company in Johannesburg in November of 1993. If you do the math, OLALA INTERIORS had just celebrated their 30th birthday this past November! Schané scouted KwaZulu-Natal for a few months before deciding to relocate to Ballito in 2009. She looked for development,

If you mix an exclusive Cape Town property, an open brief and a trusting client with an eye for designer pieces, the end result is a decorator’s dream project. This was a client-centred project - as are all of OLALA INTERIORS’ designs. “In our first project completed for this client, I designed and made a deep midnight blue buttoned couch,” says Schanè. “The client loved it then and still loves it now. That cemented his favourite interior colour scheme: black with saturated blues, deep sapphires, cobalt and navy.”

s a collaborative, the OLALA INTERIORS team is a talented bunch of designers and craftsmen who travel and work all over the world to bring home the best of internationally acclaimed designs and trends. They install complete, unique and exquisite interior projects for high-end clients and deliver gorgeous interiors, including kitchens and cabinetry.

This home project actually came about unexpectedly! With the trucks loaded to decorate another house for her client, Schané and her team were informed of a change of plan: the house they were primed to furnish had been sold, and in its place was an exclusive Clifton property, designed by Jane Visser of Visser Architects. The brief from the client was simple: surprise me. Schané had to go back to the drawing board. “A toned down yet alluring modern industrial style was redesigned into a layered and more glamorous look and feel,” she says. In the end, it took her a matter of weeks to turn the project around, to travel to find exclusive designer pieces, to hunt for fabulous art, and for the team at the OLALA INTERIORS factory to make the custom-designed cabinetry. To pull off a project of this magnitude is testament to the relationships Schané fosters with her clients. The brief may have taken her by surprise, but the trust in and success of the execution is a result of her knowing her client’s preferences and building good lines of communication. Schané has two loves: black and velvet. “So, now I have a client who loves black, adores velvet, travels extensively, has an amazing eye for design, and fell in love with this gracious home and its unobstructed views over Clifton and Camps Bay!” This could fairly be classified as a dream job. Four storeys, five bedrooms, 3.9 metre-high ceilings, bare white walls and panoramic views from the Twelve Apostles to Clifton’s beaches - this was the blank canvas that Schané had to work with. The views, seen through tall sash windows, are framed in lush black velvet drapes. The home’s magnificent proportions, which allow for expressive decorating with

volumes of epic wall space for beautiful, imported wallpaper and local art, are the work of architect Jane Visser. “The brief by the previous owners was to make the most of the Twelve Apostles view and to build in the kind of Edwardian architectural style inspired by original Clifton houses,” says Jane. “We studied the architecture of other Edwardian buildings in coastal suburbs like Simon’s Town, Kalk Bay and St James to come up with a believable architectural style.” The challenge was the plot itself. “The site is steeply sloping and shaped like a kite. Onto this, we had to position a highly symmetrical classical building, maximising views and the north sun. This was a difficult puzzle to resolve,” Jane says. “I think it’s an achievement that we shoehorned a design that should really be in a much bigger garden. I’m also proud of the way we’ve hidden the modern construction of the building so that it appears authentic to the style.” The slightly exaggerated Edwardian proportions make the house feel grand despite its awkwardly shaped grounds. The high ceilings, for example, have a void above them for the air-conditioning ducts, with a vent detail between the double cornices designed by Jane’s team, the scale of which also corrects the proportions. In addition to being a family home, the house is also used as a corporate and entertainment venue for business clients, hence the importance and expense placed on reception and entertainment areas as well as the fairly masculine guest suites. By combining bold blues and black hues with gold trimmings and vibrant artwork, the OLALA INTERIORS team has created a luxurious family home that ticks all the boxes.

We flew in a Long Ranger which can carry up to five passengers. It was both mine and Amy’s first time in a helicopter and what a delight it was! We were speechless throughout most of the unforgettable experience.

The flight started at their Head Office and followed the coastline from Willard Beach to Olwandle Estate, where we landed for a tour of the grounds. BAC Helicopters and Olwandle Estates, formerly known as Jex Estates, have curated beautiful packages for guests to enjoy a luxurious secluded picnic on the Estate during the helicopter experience. The Estate is a marine haven with diverse wildlife like humpback whales and dolphins.

Surrounded by serene dune forests, it offers an intimate getaway. Upon arrival, we were greeted with two of three houses. The oldest, dating back to 1887, radiates old farmhouse charm. Visitors are encouraged to feel at home, enjoy the surroundings, and appreciate the Estate's history. Initially a working farm, Olwandle Estate has transformed over the years, with each house telling its unique story. After soaking in the views, we took to the sky for our return, watching the waves crash, dogs chasing their balls on the beach, and couples taking a morning stroll from above. It’s so surreal being that high up, and it really makes you love our town even more. If you have never experienced the amazing aerial views of our North Coast, then this is your sign to book a tour! The helicopter tours also make the ideal surprise gift for a loved one with a taste for adventure. 032 061 0617 info@bacheli.com www.bachelicopters.com

name had to change to something that covered all that we do. It's a cool story actually: two stay-at-home moms, who missed our monthly estate magazines (we had recently moved to Ballito), purely by accident started the first estate mag for the estate we lived in. In a blink of an eye (and because of a bit of a competitive streak as a competing JHB business started chatting to local estates), we decided this two-man band needed to expand. That is how it all started!

Tell us a bit about when you joined FabMags Lorinda started Estate Press while I was still at Derivco. It wasn't too much longer after that that I resigned from corporate life and joined her in the business. From there we grew and expanded until where we are today. Obviously, roles have changed over time but it's been amazing to be a part of such a wonderful local story. What do you love most about working at FabMags? As one of the “older players” who's been around and on the team for a while, it is difficult to choose. I'd say my favourite thing is definitely the team. The results are 100% a result

We have always been KZN-focused (we have it all covered from Ballito to Midlands). Today, we are 16 staff members strong with 10 print mags (community and estate-based), three locally based business directories, five estate-based digital magazines, and two/ three under-license magazines for clients annually. As Justin always says, we are still successful because we LOVE what we do. We love the people we work with, we love the stories we get to tell, and we love being community-focused. What do you love most about working at FabMags? The team! When you have the right team around the table, it’s easy. I have been

of the amazing people who work together every day. They have such an inspiring ethos and dynamic. What is your favourite article of 2023 and why? Having to choose my favourite is like asking a parent to pick a favourite child. The exercise forced me to go back through many of our editions to be sure, and I found myself often second-guessing. My answer is “The Start of Forever” in the February/ March 2023 edition of The Ballito Magazine. Why? It’s a blend of a few things. The Ballito has a soft spot in my heart, the story is carried on the cover (the cover photo itself is delightful in telling its own story), and lastly, the actual story is about love, new beginnings, hope and diversity. It makes me smile every time I read it.

blessed with the best of the best over the years. We employ for attitude and train for the rest - it has been a winning combination for sure! We work hard, laugh hard and sometimes stress hard, but when it counts, we pull together even harder. No one is an island, and working together to hit deadlines or targets is what truly makes this team special! What is your favourite article of 2023 and why? That’s a tough question, as there are so many good ones! I love that we highlight local women in business, all of the Midlands articles are super cool for us beach people, and the food and travel articles are great! I'd have to say “So South African” in the August/September 2023 edition of The Ballito Magazine - our Heritage Day biltong-focused menu. It was a special one because it was something different. We loved working with local suppliers and, most of all, we had a lot of fun coming up with the menus, cooking the food, and taking the photos. Loads of laughing and about 1000 photos later, the spread was exactly what we wanted it to look like!

PEOPLE

HannaB How did your music career start? I have always been musically inclined. My mom used to call me her little fairy because from when I could walk and talk, I would prefer to sing and dance. I started taking music seriously when I was about eight years old, but only officially launched as the artist HannaB in May 2022. I have my mom to thank for this, who saw my talent and has done everything she can to support my dream. I would not change it or her for the world. What is your music style? I don’t really have a ‘genre’. I love all types of music - the song just has to speak to me and the music style follows. I don’t believe in restricting myself as an artist. I’m just HannaB and I do HannaB. What inspires you as a musician? I am so inspired when my music brings a message to people, puts a smile on their faces, or brings them

joy. I am also inspired to make music that will make a difference in this world. I especially have a passion for combating malnutrition in our world and I perform to support this cause. Do you have any albums? I am currently working on an album. I want it to be an expression of who I am. I have released one single called “Shine Your Light”. I am young and can fortunately take the time to make something that reflects who I am and the message I want to put out into the world.

Can you share a memorable moment in your career thus far? Recently, I performed to raise funds for Nourish the Children Foundation. I sang the song “Rise Up” by Andra Day and there was a video playing behind me with photos of various children. It hit home and I got really emotional on stage. I realised how fortunate and blessed I am, and that I, as a young teenager, can make a difference, even if it’s just in one child’s life. (I hope it will be a whole lot more). @hanna_b_musicza

Do you have any albums, or would you like to produce one? We don’t have any albums yet. Hopefully, one day soon we will be able to take some time out and produce something. Can you share a memorable moment in your career thus far? Every gig is unique and special. No two gigs are exactly the same, and no matter who we play for there is always a special memory created.

Afritude How did your music career start? Who are the members? The current band members of Afritude are Sydney Appalsamy, Sylvester Dunn and myself, Derrick Jacob. I started playing as a kid at home and with friends. I really enjoyed it and it evolved into a career.

What is your musical style? We don’t have a particular style of music. We have a variety of styles which we play and can only call it “happy music”. What inspires you as musicians? Inspiration comes from many sources, such as other great musicians and people who attend our gigs.

How did you choose the name of your band? When we were putting the band together, we were toying around with names and happened to be on Durban Beachfront at the time. Right there in front of us was the word ‘Afritude’ on the old Capital Radio building. We agreed that it was perfect for us and used it as the band’s name. We are Africans with crazy attitudes! @the_band_afritude

How did your music career start? Who are the band members? We started out in our teens, dabbling in music and learning to play instruments. Steve is on vocals, Shales is on bass, Ernie is on drums and Des is on guitar. Des replaced Regan who immigrated in 2020. What is your musical style? The band is aged from 45 to 60, so our happy place is playing classic rock covers in the 70s and 80s rock music genre. We cover songs from The Beatles to AC/DC.

What inspires you as musicians? Listening to other artists to improve oneself and to find creativity. Most importantly, our mission is to make people happy. Our fans inspire us to reach new heights! Do you have any albums? The Spare Parts has released one cover song, "Sweet Caroline", and five original songs since 2022, called “Blue Skies”, “Heavenly Rust”, “Hier Kom a Ding”, “Color Me Blue” and “Slow Motion Richochet”. Our sixth original song, titled “Local Hobo”, was released on 31 October 2023.

Can you share a memorable moment in your career thus far? We played two sell-out shows at The Pumpkin Theatre in Ballito in May 2022. The band stepped into a professional arena with great success. Due to public demand, we will be back at The Pumpkin Theatre on 27 and 28 December! How did you choose the name of your band? Steve and Shales met at an open mic session before the COVID lockdown. Ernie and his son, Regan, joined during lockdown. The Spare Parts name caught on as each member was a sort of spare musician before the band was formed. @the_spare_parts_

The newly refurbished cornerstone section will captivate young and old with firecracker lights erected on the trees, a gloriously illuminated giant “JOY” selfie station, and a cosmic light Christmas tree. Along with enchanting decorations, Ballito Junction will be the centre of festivities. A Festive Market will take place in the new piazza area every day from 15 to 30 December, offering unique gifts for all ages. There’s nothing that gets me in the festive spirit more than decking out my home with Christmas decorations. Why not up the fun by making your own holiday wreath to welcome guests to your home? At this year’s The Fair with Flair (in support of The Christmas Fair Fund) Creative Workshop, I was able to get Cindy’s (from Love Laugh) step-by-step on how to create a wreath with gorgeous greenery. w w w. T h e B a l l i t o m a g a z i n e . c o . z a

| 81

STEP ONE

STEP Two

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

STEP Three

• Metal ring with two circles (size depends on how big you want your wreath to be) • Scissors/shears • Bag of moss • Twine • 5 - 8 bouquets of plants, preferably long-lasting and driable (Cindy’s suggestions: eucalyptus (penny gum), Stoebe, common heather, fynbos, rosemary, geranium, olive and Craspedia) • 1 larger flower/plant (Cindy’s suggestion: proteas) (optional) • Florist tape • Florist wire • Decorative ribbon • Dried oranges slices, cinnamon sticks, dried chillis or other dried decorations • Glue gun (optional)

HOW TO MAKE YOUR WREATH STEP THREE

82 |

w w w. T h e B a l l i t o m a g a z i n e . c o . z a

Step One: Create the Base You’re going to start by flatly

placing moss between the two circles on the metal ring and securing it by wrapping the twine tightly around it. If your twine ends, simply tie another piece to the end of it and continue. You can do two or three layers of moss, depending on how big you want the wreath to be. Don’t worry about being too neat here - the ‘crazier’ the moss looks, the better. Additionally, don’t fret if you can see the twine within the moss - this will be covered! When the entire ring is generously covered, your base is complete. Step Two: Bundle It Up Now it’s time to create the plant bundles that will bring your wreath to life. Grab a few stems from your different bouquets and cut them so they are roughly 15 to 20 centimetres in length. Then, you’re going to take florist tape and wrap it around the end of the bundle a few times, tightly so that the stems won’t fall out.

Local

This is a basic bundle, but you can spruce it up. Add your decorative ribbon by tying it around half the bundle (do not cut the excess ribbon as this will hang from your wreath beautifully!). You can also add your dried decorative pieces and cinnamon sticks by tying them to the front of the bundle with florist wire. Again, do not cut off the excess wire, as you can attach the bundle to the metal ring with it. You will need roughly 20 to 30 different bundles, depending on how ‘full’ you want your wreath to look. Be creative! Note: Cindy suggests making one ‘centre’ or bigger bundle with your larger plant. Step Three: Your Wreath Takes Shape Start with your larger or centre bundle (if you made one). Place it at the bottom of the wreath, with the end of the bundle facing towards the middle circle, at a diagonal angle (so the plant/flower faces out the side of the wreath). Secure the bundle by wrapping a piece of the twine around it and tying it behind the wreath. Following the same direction as your centre bundle, you are going to place one of your smaller bundles right under it on the mossy base, with the end of the bundle facing towards

STEP FOUR

the outer circle, so the ends of the two bundles almost criss-cross. Secure it with the twine (or florist wire if you used it). Continue this with all the other bundles, following the same direction but alternating the angle at which the bundle is secured (with the end facing toward the middle or outer circle), until the wreath is fully covered. Note: You can also leave one-half of the wreath bare, with only the moss visible! Step Four: The Final Touches To finish it off, you can add more moss to bare spots, play around with the bundles so the twine is covered, and cut off excess pieces of twine. If you have a glue gun, you can also stick on extra dried orange slices.

Once your stunning, festive wreath is complete, tie a long piece of ribbon around the top of the wreath so you can hang it on your door! And voila! You have a personally made natural wreath that will be loved by your family and friends the whole festive season.

“I do,” she exclaimed, as he took her face into his hands and kissed her gently on the lips… or at least that’s the way we expect the story to end. That is how Ballito-based Christo Barnard, the Director of the boutique conveyancing firm CBA Inc., and Enneagram Coach Tracey Fowler expected their story to end when he took to his knee one chilly July evening. Instead, what they found was that as the save-thedates were sent and the venue was booked, their response to forever became “I do, unless I can’t, I don’t or I won’t”. It was thus that just a few weeks before their wedding, they found themselves sitting over a morning coffee at a local coffee shop when Tracey suddenly exclaimed that she could not go through with the wedding. Christo breathed a sigh of relief for the pending nuptials had started to slowly feel like a noose tightening around his neck too. Three weeks and a few days before their Love Party was set to take place at the whimsical Grand Exotic in Salt Rock, one would never say that they are not counting down their days to forever. They clearly adore each other as they cannot get through a cup of coffee without holding hands or excitedly speaking about their future together. Why then not simply say “I do” and be done with it?

Marriage, in some form or another, has historically been seen as the necessary step to take in a couple’s relationship progression. Entering matrimony for love instead of economic reasons is a reasonably modern-day concept as it only started to emerge in the Western world during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Traditionally, marriage was entered into to bind a woman to a man and thus ensure his continued lineage. The matrimonial union provided a vehicle to cement familial alliances and ensure the economic security of families. Marriage continues to be a beautiful union in which many couples choose to partake. It provides both spouses with a certain amount of legal and economic security, especially young couples who are building a family together. The advent of antenuptial contracts has also ensured that couples can structure their matrimonial property regime in such a way that their bottom line is protected. Despite all this, there has been a global upswing in divorce rates from the 1970s with the younger generation choosing to enter wedlock much later, if at all. Along with this trend, there has been an increase in alternative forms of happily-ever-after, such as the Love Party Christo and Tracey celebrated on 18 November. Christo was married for 35 years until the death of his son and the reality of an unhappy life forced him to seek out his own happily-ever-after. He was raised in a culturally and religiously conservative community where divorce was heavily frowned upon. His choice to divorce came at a cost to his emotional well-being. Fortunately, he went in search of peace in the years following his son’s death and his divorce, finding mindfulness and breath work as mediums to forgive himself and release his pain. During this time, Christo founded his second business, Space to Breathe. Space to Breathe mediates for couples on the

cusp of divorce and allows individuals an opportunity to grieve the trauma they face in a supported manner. He is using his own experiences to give back. Tracey has also used her trauma and life experience to give back. She lost her father at a young age and found that her matrimonial happily-ever-after never wanted to stay forever. She is an Enneagram Coach for individuals and corporations, helping them better understand themselves to live more fulfilling lives and work better. Recently, she has started to apply her skills to families by mapping out parents’ style of parenting and their children’s enneagrams, giving parents insight into their children to parent more effectively. An enneagram is a type of behavioural test that outlines your strengths, weaknesses, fears and driving motivations. Tracey uses the results of this test, together with her years of coaching experience, to help people live and work better. Together, Tracey and Christo make a beautiful and in-love couple, so why not then say ‘I do’?

Well, for them, marriage is not off the table but there are other options that they may consider exploring. This includes entering into a cohabitation or life partnership agreement which is a legal alternative to marriage. This type of agreement allows you to formalise the way you share finances and divide assets both during and after the end of your relationship. Whether or not they ever say ‘I do’, one thing is for certain - this couple epitomised the words by Rumi, “Be foolishly in love because love is all there is”, when they decadently celebrated their love with their nearest and dearest. So, whether you are choosing to enter into a marriage, a life partnership agreement, or merely happily cohabitate, don’t let the fear of matrimony stop you from celebrating each other or your love because life really is short.

E Ballito Polo Club

ver heard of Ikigai, the Japanese concept meaning 'reason for being' or 'life purpose'? It's a philosophy divided into four essential areas: passion (what you love), mission (what the world needs), vocation (what you're good at), and profession (what you can get paid for). Why am I mentioning this? Well, understanding your Ikigai can deepen your selfawareness and guide your life's path, and having a hobby or joining a club can benefit your exploration of Ikigai. Whether you're aiming to find this balance in life or are just craving an escape from your routine to stimulate your brain, our town has an abundance of clubs to offer. Let's start with fitness. We all should be doing some type of physical activity and sometimes we need some motivation to do it. The best way to get moving is by joining a group of others who enjoy the same sport or type of exercise.

Umhlali Country Club

Ballito Polo Club was founded in 2020 by Lionel Foster, a current two-goaler competitive polo player. His passion for polo and

seeing others enjoy the thrill is the reason this club has seen tremendous growth on the North Coast. All horses are provided, and all riding levels are welcome. Join them for a free tryout and a fun afternoon at Oaklands Equestrian Centre. Umhlali Country Club takes immense pride in the club's rich history, traditions and family experience, emphasising its rustic charm while fostering a warm and welcoming atmosphere. How CPR Training Can Save Lives on Ballito's Beaches WORDS Kai Coates

L

iving in our beautiful town, I am grateful for the luxury of being able to walk to the beach and enjoy the water. During school holidays and warm weekends, it’s wonderful to watch locals and visitors have fun in our glistening ocean. However, there are many risks when entering our waters. I spoke with the IPSS Search and Rescue team about the importance of water safety and the life-saving potential of simple training. It's alarming to know that we experience one life-threatening

90 |

Stay Safe • Swim within designated areas. • Ensure there are lifeguards. • DO NOT go swimming alone. • DO NOT drink (alcohol) before entering the water. • Familiarise yourself with beach safety signs. • Check the ocean tides before entering the water. • Keep your eye on your kids.

water-related incident every week. IPSS Search and Rescue, a division of IPSS Medical, is dedicated to saving lives in our town. They offer CPR courses to empower the public with life-saving skills, and, in a coastal town like ours, understanding water safety is crucial, as seemingly fun beach activities can turn dangerous. Swimming where lifeguards are present is always the safest choice. Ballito has trained professionals who patrol certain beaches, but

accidents can still happen when swimmers venture out of sight or when lifeguards are off duty. Rip currents pose a common danger. These are powerful currents flowing away from the shore that can pull swimmers out to sea, increasing the risk of drowning. It's important to recognise signs indicating rip currents and know how to respond. If caught in one, staying calm, swimming parallel to the shore, and then returning to the beach is advised. IPSS Search

Local

Do’s and Don’ts During a Water Emergency DO • Call for help promptly - don't delay until it's too late. • Stay calm when reporting the incident. • Provide accurate location details (road names, landmarks, beach names, etc.). • Save IPSS Search and Rescue as an emergency contact: 0823 911 911 • Provide your name and number to the rescue team on the phone, in case of connection loss or running out of airtime. DON'T • Exaggerate the situation when speaking on the phone. • Depend on social media or WhatsApp groups for assistance. • Leave the scene before the rescue team arrives.

and Rescue also handles incidents in pools, rivers and dams, where dangers can lurk beneath the water's surface. Having knowledge of CPR and first aid is extremely valuable in these threatening situations. The IPSS Search and Rescue team shared a story about a local surfer, aged 55, who fell unconscious after a freak accident in the waves. Fortunately, his friend noticed the danger and pulled him out of the water. A bystander who knew CPR started performing compressions until the rescue team arrived. Those critical minutes of a stranger's help saved the surfer's life. In case of an emergency, calmly calling for help should be your first step. IPSS Search and Rescue is available 24/7 and will respond to all calls. There are Pink Rescue Buoys placed at stratigic places along the coastline. These buoys are part of a NSRI drowning prevention initiative and used in the event someone gets into difficulty. The idea is for a strong swimmer to bring the floatation device to someone in need, maintaining positive bouancy

and keeping them afloat while rescuers are on their way. This reduces the risk of drowning. If there is no flotation device available, keeping a close eye on the person and providing guidance to rescuers upon their arrival is important. Always remember that water safety is a shared responsibility. Whether you are a visitor or a local, it's crucial to prioritise your well-being by remaining vigilant, informed, and following the instructions provided by lifeguards and signage. Additionally, staying hydrated, applying sunscreen, and respecting the power and unpredictability of the ocean are essential practices to ensure a safe experience. IPSS Search and Rescue offers various courses to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to learn or refresh their knowledge and skills. Get in contact with them to book essential courses such as basic first aid level 1, primary first aid level 2, advanced first aid level 3, basic fire fighting, and heart saver first aid, among many others.

Travel

WORDS Kai Coates

A young local accepts the challenge to travel to 30 countries before she turns 30! Yente shares her exciting journey with us.

M

eet Yente, a 31-year-old whose heart has found solace in the picturesque coastal town of Ballito since early 2020. She has travelled across 35 countries on six continents, each adventure leaving a unique imprint on her soul.

Fiji

Yente’s interest in international travel first began with academic pursuits. Bursaries and research projects paved the way, culminating in an invitation to join a research team in China. Her advice to young adults echoes her own beginnings: "Explore study abroad programmes, gap years or volunteer opportunities. These experiences not only enrich your resume but also broaden your horizons and help you meet diverse people.” During the COVID lockdown, Yente dreamed of postlockdown adventures, promising herself to create meaningful experiences in the final years of her twenties. She then discovered the "30 countries by 30" challenge (to travel to 30 countries before turning 30 years old) online, which sparked her curiosity and encouraged her to take part. Understanding the different perspectives of the challenge, she established her own criteria: to spend a full day outside the airport, explore local transport, and indulge in authentic cuisine in each country. Seizing opportunities from business trips and spontaneous invitations from friends, Yente’s journey unfolded. “From the age of 28 to 30, I set off on an incredible few years of adventures around the world - starting with a company retreat in Hawaii and making my way across the world, where I eventually celebrated my 30th country (Fiji) during the month of my 30th birthday (November 2022)!” Amidst her global escapades, she found profound wisdom within herself. “If you don't find peace within yourself, you won't find it somewhere else," she asserts, debunking the illusion of constant happiness portrayed on social media. Solo travels challenged her introverted nature, forcing her out of her comfort zone.

Lesotho

Alongside her exceptional adventures, Yente now wears the hat of Regional Director of Africa, Asia, Europe and the South Pacific for Global Leadership Adventures (GLA), a US-based B Corp dedicated to empowering young minds. "We believe that young people - when given the opportunity and privilege to embrace different cultures - can confront timely challenges and develop their unique leadership styles.” With this belief, GLA has been sending intellectually curious and socially oriented teenagers on transformative journeys abroad since 2004. Deeply influenced by her own experiences, she now channels her passion into inspiring others.

Marrakech, Morocco

Among all the countries, Morocco stands out for Yente. Its vibrant blend of cultures shaped her perspective profoundly. "Morocco made me more open-minded and empathetic. It taught me patience and the importance of respect and humility when faced with language barriers in unfamiliar cultures."

Sumatra, Indonesia, became a canvas for her environmental conservation efforts. In the heart of its jungles, she encountered the endangered Sumatran orangutans, their existence hanging by a fragile thread due to deforestation. Her enthusiasm shines through as she recounts her rare encounter with a blooming corpse flower, an endangered marvel of nature. The Seychelles, with its pristine beaches and coral reefs, also holds a special place in her heart.

Yente's role allows her to travel, not just for leisure but to create opportunities for teens to immerse themselves in different cultures, languages and cities. "Creating the next generation of leaders has always been important to me, and my current position allows me to 'be the change' I want to see for the next generation," she states. Her extensive travels have shattered stereotypes and prompted uncomfortable yet crucial conversations. "Being exposed to diverse cultures made me question my role and privilege as a responsible world citizen." Her favourite quote, "Life is what happens while we're busy making plans”, epitomises her approach to life. "Say yes to opportunities that align with your goals, start small, and don't be afraid to travel alone. Solo travel doesn't mean lonely. It can lead to many connections and friendships."

first started writing picture books when my children were young. Having an inspirational mother who read profusely to me as a child, I also read numerous picture books to my own children. Most of these books came from England, but when I started writing and publishing, I found that publishers wanted South African stories featuring our local landscape.

One of my most successful children’s picture books is The Gift of the Sun, which was translated into Afrikaans, isiXhosa and isiZulu, as well as Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, French, Spanish and South

My two latest chapter books include The Boy Who Hated Insects and, the most recent, Mind the Monkeys - both illustrated by Imile Wepener and published by Penguin Random House. Environmental issues have always concerned me and I conducted a great deal of research before writing my books that feature South African insects and wildlife. In 2023, I was awarded a South African Children’s Laureate Award by the SA Festival of Children’s Literature in recognition of my children’s books as well as my tireless attempts to encourage reading and enable previously disadvantaged children to read and have access to books. Most children and parents are so absorbed by their phones and iPads that they have forgotten how important reading is. A recent international survey by the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study found that many South African readers in Grade 4 read without comprehension. Reading oneon-one with your children not only benefits them intellectually but improves bonding as well, as children love stories! These days, I spend much time teaching creative writing (I have an MA in South African Literature and Creative Writing) in schools and to adult groups. This year, I have been fortunate to offer writing workshops at the University of Cape Town summer school, the Franschhoek Literary Festival, and the Hermanus FynArts Festival. dirod@iafrica.com

n our town, you can explore a world of diverse cultures and cuisines. One standout place is Dumpling Bar, a charming restaurant that immerses you in Asian culture, featuring stunning geisha art created by the talented local artist That Damn Vandal. Recently, Dumpling Bar introduced new dishes to their menu that we couldn't resist trying. Their Kimchi and Veg Dumplings, filled with the traditional Korean fermented vegetable dish, were a delightful surprise with their amazing flavours. Another highlight was the Crispy Tofu Bao Buns, a fluffy, steamed bun filled with crunchy tofu, complemented perfectly by chilli and garlic sauces. The restaurant also offers classic

Japanese sushi, and we enjoyed their Deluxe Platter featuring bamboo rolls, salmon roses and rainbow rolls - fresh and tasty! Moving on to the larger signature dishes, the generous portion of Roast Duck Noodle Soup was a hit, boasting a rich broth and tender duck breast that was devoured fairly quickly. The Sweet and Sour Chicken is a great classic, and their take on the dish is very colourful with different vegetables, pineapple and a side of egg-fried rice. The sticky sauce coated everything, making it a scrumptiously sweet and savoury meal. The Salt and Pepper Prawns are also a must-try - batter-

fried prawns mixed with bell peppers and spring onion served with a side of steamed cabbage and carrots. The juicy prawns burst with flavour! To end our meal on a sweet note, we tried the restaurant’s unique desserts. The Chocolate Spring Rolls, served with ice cream, were a delightful crispy treat filled with melted chocolate. The DeepFried Ice Cream, with its crispy exterior and smooth vanilla centre, provided a deliciously satisfying experience. Dumpling Bar offers not only memorable food but also a fantastic atmosphere and great service, making it a must-visit spot in town this summer.

health

WORDS Dr Ryall Hamlyn

I

n our quest for optimal health and wellness, we can’t overlook “unconventional therapies” that yield remarkable benefits. One such practice gaining traction recently is ice bathing. Immersing oneself in ice-cold water (yes! At zero degrees!) takes guts, but it offers a myriad of physical and mental health advantages. So, I decided to personally dive into the chilly waters of ice baths and explore its surprising benefits. After my first session, I was hooked. Six months later, I am addicted to this weekly practice.

Physical Benefits Ice bathing (or cold-water immersion therapy) packs a powerful punch when it comes to physical health. Plunging into freezing water triggers a cascade of physiological responses that can enhance well-being. The cold temperature constricts blood vessels, reducing inflammation and promoting better blood circulation. This aids in post-workout recovery of sore muscles and injuries and can even alleviate symptoms of arthritis and other chronic conditions, improve sleep, and remove metabolic waste. Additionally, research has proven ice bathing to boost the immune system. The sudden shock stimulating the production and activity of white blood cells enhances the body’s ability to fight infection and diseases.

Mental and Emotional Wellbeing

Safety

Ice bathing has a profound effect on mental and emotional well-being. The “high” from just two minutes triggers endorphins, rapidly and tangibly enhancing mood, leaving a sense of euphoria. With regular immersions, there is a noticeably reduced feeling of stress, anxiety, and depression, promoting mental resilience and power. I just feel “mighty” afterwards.

It's crucial to approach ice bathing sensibly. Always consult a healthcare professional beforehand (preferably one that actually practises it), especially if you have underlying medical conditions. Avoid submersion for prolonged periods of more than 15 minutes. Never ice bathe alone and listen to your body. Join others who are more experienced.

Regular ice bathing strengthens our willpower and self-discipline. It requires mental fortitude and the ability to face discomfort head-on. Over time, this translates into greater self-confidence and a sense of accomplishment, while empowering other areas of your life. Combining it with “breath work”, physical training, meditation and fasting is key to gaining maximum longevity and anti-aging benefits.

As ice bathing gains popularity, so does the more convincing research emerge of the remarkable health benefits. Taking the plunge into icy waters can be simply done at home or with a large chest freezer. Join others in this transformative journey. Embrace the cold and unlock a path to wellness you never thought possible.

For me and my family, our connection with the property goes beyond the existing residential estate and encompasses about 104 years of history. I was fortunate to grow up on the farm that made up most of today’s Simbithi, which was known as Beverley Sugar Estate. I have many happy memories of exploring the indigenous forests and canefields. My grandparents, Mannie and Rosemary Ladlau, lived in the original Homestead, nestled within a 1.8-hectare private enclave close to the current South Gate. The home and surrounding garden has a rich heritage and is an iconic landmark on the North Coast. In 1919, the farm was bought by George Ladlau, who named it Beverley after a town in Yorkshire. George immigrated to South Africa with the British Army's 45th Regiment in the early 1900s. Another

British officer bought the neighbouring farm, named Beachcroft, and this was later combined with Beverley. George’s son, my grandfather, Winston Ian (Mannie) Ladlau, took over the running of the farm in 1947 after returning from service in World War II and made the old farmhouse his home with his new wife, Rosemary MacDonald. The house was a series of interleading rooms set off a large living space and veranda on the southeastern side. It was weathered and had been attacked by termites, so my grandparents decided to rebuild the house on the existing footprint. They asked their brother-in-law, Alan Woodrow, a leading protagonist of arts and crafts and Tudor Revival architecture in Natal, to design a house that would suit the climate, the garden and their outdoor lifestyle. The new design was similar to the

arrangement of the original structure, with the kitchen remaining in its original position. Constructed in 1955, the new house was built of masonry, with whitewashed walls and a thatched roof. Notable features of the house are the high loft ceilings of the thatch roof, an open outdoor living room, and garden courtyards. The guest cottage of the original farmstead, known affectionately by our family as the Khowe (‘mushroom’ in isiZulu), built on a stone retaining structure, was kept. Over the years, the farmstead grew to accommodate staff, a dairy and various other functions related to the farm. There are no records of building plans for these structures but we know that the main house had a bedroom wing added for Mannie’s mother, Natalie, in around 1964. With both my grandparents having now passed away, the family decided to lovingly and painstakingly renovate the homestead and re-imagine elements of the botanic-like garden which Rosemary was so well-known for. The buildings have been meticulously restored but also modernised to offer all the conveniences and luxuries of a contemporary coastal home. Whilst the family is looking forward to sharing many more happy memories in the homestead, the plan is to also offer guests and families the opportunity to rent it and enjoy some of the magic and history we were so fortunate to experience over the years. With so much new development happening all around us, it is increasingly valuable to preserve these special historical landmarks and not forget the roots from which the area has grown.
