There are a series of moments that are pivotal in our lives. Sometimes these moments are chosen, sometimes divine, and oftentimes consequential. Irrespective of how they unfold, we seldom appreciate or recognise them when they happen, but rather need time to distil them to better understand them.
I recall a few of mine. My first conversation with God, my first love that fashioned a lifetime of love, our wedding day that forged a clan, the birth of each of the kids that grew that clan, and a handful of adventures we’ve taken together that added spice and zest to our lives.
Those are the moments past, but what about those yet to come? For us, our clan, we’ve got one of the few visible, predictable moments coming, and it’s a big one. One that we’ve been waiting for and the first of three that are guaranteed to change our lives. This month, the Scott clan celebrates our first wedding! This is really big for us. The clan expands and we welcome a son-in-law who is a very, very special man.
Not only does he bring so much to our clan but, most importantly, he loves our precious daughter in ways greater than we could have ever hoped for. As for Roxy, well, there aren’t enough words or pages in this magazine to express how proud we are of her and how much we love her.
The moments I've shared have all been expressions of love, in one way or another, but, for me, Roxy and Warren’s wedding feels like a culmination of all of that coming together in one big celebration.
On that day, I’ll be a collection of different roles. I’ll be a proud, loving and excited father. I’ll be a husband reflecting on my own journey with an amazing wife. I’ll be a son missing a mom, wishing she was around to celebrate with us all. I’ll be a son-in-law grateful to have a dad around to share the moment. I’ll be a brother celebrating with another brother. I’ll be just me, emotional, grateful for a well-lived life filled with amazing people all around me. I’ll be a man made up of a lifetime of moments, remembering those past, celebrating those happening and looking forward to those to come.
I hope you enjoy our latest edition. Thank you for allowing me to share my personal reflection… it’s a simple reflection of the journey of a man made up of moments.
Til the next edition, God bless.

In a world where traditional notions of masculinity often prioritise stoicism and emotional suppression, encouraging men to express their emotions openly and constructively is not just beneficial - it's essential for their mental health and overall well-being. Challenging these ingrained stereotypes is a crucial step towards fostering healthier attitudes towards masculinity and promoting emotional literacy.
Historically, men have been conditioned to believe that showing vulnerability is a sign of weakness, undermining their status as strong and capable individuals. Consequently, many men struggle to articulate their feelings, fearing judgment or ridicule if they dare to display anything other than toughness. However, this reluctance to express emotions can have detrimental effects on mental health, leading to increased stress, anxiety and even depression.
It's time to redefine masculinity and dismantle the harmful stereotypes that perpetuate the notion that emotions are a sign of weakness. Emotional expression is not a gendered trait - it is a fundamental aspect of being human. By encouraging men to embrace their emotions, we empower them to lead more authentic and fulfilling lives.
One of the first steps is to create safe spaces where men feel comfortable to share their feelings without fear of judgment. This could be through support groups, therapy sessions or even casual conversations among friends. Normalising emotional vulnerability helps break down the barriers that prevent men from seeking help when they need it most.
Education also plays a vital role in challenging traditional notions of masculinity. By teaching
boys from a young age that it's okay to show a wide range of emotions, we can prevent harmful stereotypes from taking root. Schools, families and communities all have a role to play in promoting emotional literacy and fostering empathy and understanding.
Furthermore, media representation plays a significant role in shaping societal attitudes towards masculinity. By portraying a diverse range of male characters who express their emotions openly and authentically, the media can help challenge stereotypes and promote healthier ideals of manhood.
It's important to recognise that encouraging emotional expression does not mean asking men to abandon their masculinity altogether. Rather, it's about redefining masculinity in a way that celebrates vulnerability as a strength rather than a weakness. Men can still be strong, courageous and assertive while also being emotionally open and empathetic.
Encouraging men to show their emotions openly and constructively is essential for their mental health and overall well-being. By challenging traditional notions of masculinity that discourage vulnerability, we can create a more inclusive and compassionate society where all individuals feel empowered to be their authentic selves. It's time to embrace emotional expression as a fundamental aspect of being human, regardless of gender.
EMOTIONAL EXPRESSION IS NOT A GENDERED TRAIT - IT IS A FUNDAMENTAL ASPECT OF BEING HUMAN

Imagine a sunny haven nestled in the peaceful coastal town of Shakas Rock, Ballito - a place where innovation and hospitality blend effortlessly. This is where Andrew Smart's journey began, reshaping the world of short-term rental property management. In 2021, Oasis Properties emerged, combining Andrew's tech skills with his love for hospitality, setting new standards in the industry.
Andrew's venture into property management began with a personal investment - a holiday home purchase
in Shakas Rock. His first acquisition, a penthouse apartment in Ballito, needed significant renovation. Undeterred by the challenge, he meticulously renovated the apartment to perfection.
Upon listing it on Airbnb, the property quickly gained popularity, earning Andrew the title of ‘Superhost’. Encouraged by this success, he expanded his portfolio, acquiring a second beachfront apartment, which underwent a similar transformation into a modern retreat. Buoyed by his accomplishments, he
replicated this achievement with a third property. Renovating three beachfront properties showcases Oasis Properties's commitment to excellence, optimising layout and amenities for discerning guests.
Operating from bustling Johannesburg posed challenges, but Andrew was determined to ensure smooth operations and unforgettable guest experiences. With a background in technology from ventures like Smart Business Systems, he quickly saw the potential to revolutionise property management.
20 | www.TheBalli T omagazine.co.za
From high-tech noise monitors ensuring peace of mind to smart locks creating custom access codes for each guest, Oasis Properties has focused on convenience and safety from day one.
The highlight of Andrew's efforts is a guest app - a digital guide providing guests with essential information like check-in instructions and local recommendations. This personalised touch not only enhances guest experiences but also improves communication throughout their stay.
As Oasis Properties grew, Andrew realised the importance of scalability and efficiency. Adopting a Property Management System (PMS) enabled seamless calendar synchronisation and automated guest messaging, making the experience hassle-free for guests and property owners. Oasis Properties uses dynamic pricing that monitors supply and demand in the area and adjusts prices automatically, ensuring higher occupancy and revenue for the property.
Beyond technology, Oasis Properties invested in its people. A dedicated team maintains properties to the highest standards, while a specialised guest support team ensures guests feel valued.
Today, Oasis Properties manages over 15 properties along the North Coast of KwaZulu-Natal, generating impressive revenue. As they explore new horizons in Cape Town and Johannesburg, they invite homeowners and investors to join them on their journey.
In a world where excellence is key, Oasis Properties is the epitome of innovation and reliability. Whether you seek a vacation home or want to maximise rental income, Oasis Properties is your trusted partner.
Experience comfort, convenience and delight with Oasis - a journey where every stay feels like paradise.

All Aboard the AI Rocket with Fenestra Asset Management
Growing your wealth should always be a priority. No one knows this better than Fenestra Asset Management. They offer astute investment management that is performance-driven, and their numbers definitely do the talking. Fenestra’s greatest successes include limiting the negative return in 2008 to under 15% when the ALSI showed a 26% drop after the global financial meltdown. Their intimate knowledge of each of their clients enables the accurate tailoring of portfolios to meet their individual investment needs.
Being in tune with the newest opportunities and primed for capital reallocations, owner William Meyer is recognising the importance of artificial intelligence and the opportunities to grow your financial portfolio by investing in this type of innovative, rising technology.
“Artificial Intelligence is the new rave investment trend, and at the forefront of this sector stands NVIDIA Corporation - the dominant supplier of artificial intelligence hardware and software,” says William. “NVIDIA announced blockbuster results
on 21 February, propelling the shares for a stratospheric rise of 16% in one day. This was an increase in shareholder wealth of $280 billion, a stock market record of all time.”
Microsoft is also an excellent contender for investment. The company is the leader in monetising AI and rolling it out to its clients. It is also the dominant developer of software, services, devices and solutions worldwide.
“Microsoft has the absolute best management team around, delivering coup after coup and executing incredibly well,” William comments. “The biggest segment of the company is now the intelligent cloud. Azure is the driving force behind the cloud platform and revenue from this division grew by 29% last quarter. By comparison, Amazon’s web services grew by only 12% and Google Cloud, which is much smaller, grew by 22%.”On top of these unbelievable numbers, Microsoft is also utilising Azure to create generative AI applications. Its shares have recently hit an all-time high and are set to go even higher. “It is hard to find other shares that are more compelling
as Microsoft’s on a growth and riskadjusted basis,” William adds. Another great opportunity for investors is ARM, the designer of architecture used in about 99% of all smartphones and other devices. Its shares increased by 25% on their first day of trading! Although its turnover and profitability have decreased in the last 12 months, its recent ventures with Apple and NVIDIA secure the company’s bright future. William notes that Apple is also a “dark horse” to look out for when investing in tech companies.
The AI industry is extremely exciting, not just in and of itself but also for investment options. Fenestra Asset Management is your partner in unlocking these opportunities and growing your wealth. If you are not happy with your portfolio performance or would like a second opinion, please do not hesitate to contact Fenestra for a free, independent, objective and confidential review of your portfolio.

Tell us a biT more abouT The work you do
As a holistic health coach, I guide clients to reach their full potential by helping them overcome obstacles and find clarity. I combine ancient wisdom with modern science, offering support as they discover their unique energy blueprint. It's fascinating to explore this aspect of oneself and see the transformative power it brings.
whaT was your life like growing up?
I was born in Vereeniging, but my childhood was filled with constant movement as my schooling career was difficult. I, like many others, wasn’t a fan of school. For me, it was more based on struggling to focus or sit still and then being branded as a restless troublemaker. This label cultivated a growing sense of disappointment.
Fortunately, my mother resisted the urge to medicate my restlessness, opting instead to homeschool me briefly. It was during this time that she discovered my aptitude for learning when I was engaged in physical activity, like climbing trees. However,
this makeshift arrangement couldn't last, and I was sent back into the conventional schooling system.
how did your career in healTh begin?
At 19, I moved to Umhlanga to help my father build a home. I managed to save enough money to buy a DJ mixer, finding solace in music. Later, my brother and father opened a bakery, where I took a customer-facing role despite my social anxiety. Working at the bakery led to unhealthy eating habits until a moment of clarity during a lunch break. Realising the toll on my health, I began a journey of selftransformation, focusing on exercise and diet, and sculpting my body into a symbol of resilience. I am forever
grateful for the strength my body now holds.
Tell us abouT a significanT momenT in your life
While living in Brazil, and during a New Year's Eve beach party drinking, I wanted to go for a swim in the ocean. At this time it was illegal to be at the beach because of the pandemic, we had the local police ask us to turn the music off and leave, but we didn’t. I stripped down to boxers and took a dip. After running and diving into the water, I went for another but this time I landed on my head and I heard a loud snap. It felt as though my head was completely to one side.

I slowly walked up the beach holding my head steady and laid down. The police were called and they contacted the ambulance before carrying me off the beach.
In agonising pain, I endured a long wait in the hospital corridors. As I waited roughly seven hours to get an X-ray, my world seemed to shrink while only being able to stare at the fluorescent lights above. Miraculously, I was spared from paralysis and had to face a pivotal choice - surgery or healing at home. I opted for the latter and embarked on a journey of recovery, finding strength in physiotherapy and mindfulness, shedding the confines of the neck brace within a month.
Through this ordeal, I discovered my true purpose as a holistic health coach. With gratitude and determination, I now help others navigate their own journeys towards healing and hope.
who are significanT people in your life who helped you Through your journey?
On my journey, two remarkable individuals made a lasting impact. In my youth, I met a Tai Chi instructor whose strength hid a gentle soul. His guidance helped me find resilience and inner strength, helping me gain confidence.
But it was Dr Joe Dispenza who truly transformed my understanding. His story of healing his spine with the power of the mind inspired me. Drawing from his teachings, I embarked on my own journey of healing, amazed by the mind's incredible power, and this is how I went about healing my neck.
afTer living overseas, why did you decide To move back To souTh africa, specifically balliTo?
As my holistic health coaching career grew, I felt a deep longing for home. South Africa called to me, but Umhlanga didn't quite feel right. A friend suggested Ballito, a coastal paradise. Intrigued by its peaceful beauty, I made it my new home. In Ballito, I found solace and a place to build my practice. Surrounded by palm trees and the calming sea, I now offer healing to a community that feels like family.

one Wednesday morning, the Fabmags team found themselves in a space that wasn’t our usual office setting. At 8 a.m., we converged at Skyline Coffee Salt Rock to enjoy the fresh air, scrumptious snacks and good coffee. The Skyline brand was launched in 2015 by a husband
and wife team, Jamie and Dylan, with the Salt Rock branch at Sage Centre opening its doors in 2021.
Last year, Ballito local Darren Lewis took over the franchise and continues to pour innovation and passion into it. We were shown to the deck area and settled in, getting comfortable
while soaking in the rays of sunlight streaming through the trees. The rest of the cafe was filled with people grabbing their morning coffees, settling down to begin work for the day (made possible by their secure parking and fast Wi-Fi), or grabbing breakfast while basking in the crisp morning air.
You can see how much the North Coast community has come to love this cafe by the smiles and excited chatter from patrons and staff. Open seven days a week from 6:30 a.m., early risers can grab a freshly made cuppa and delicious meal, ready to take on the day. They have a wall inside the cafe dedicated to showcasing local artists and businesses, giving back to the community. Of course, there’s also their branded merchandise (the T-shirts are my favourite!) and beans available for you to take some Skyline home with you.
One by one, our drinks arrived. Made with Skyline’s own brew, we got to experience the superior quality of their coffee. Our team has diverse tastes and tried quite a bit from the menu. The classic cappuccinos were delicious, the iced coffees were smooth and refreshing and the wholesome matcha was invigorating. My own decaffeinated cafe mocha was the perfect blend of chocolate and espresso, creating an ideal balance between sweet and bitter.
The cafe boasts a menu full of light meals, pastries and cakes for you to munch on. We were treated to a full spread by the friendly and seasoned staff. Flaky and golden almond and chocolate croissants followed the drinks, accompanied by crumbly blueberry muffins. There was an entire platter of their iconic banana bread, with a chocolate chip option, and Nutella spread for us to indulge in. We definitely understood why their banana bread is such a big hit - we all found ourselves reaching for another piece.
It didn’t stop there either! Soon open sandwiches arrived with a variety of toppings including smashed avocado, specialty cheeses and salami and banana with peanut butter, all served on freshly made sourdough bread. We were in foodie paradise, but the Skyline team wasn’t done spoiling us just yet. Then came the toasted sandwiches, hot off the press. We enjoyed fillings of the well-known and loved chicken and mayonnaise with gherkins, a basil
pesto-based sandwich and one with aubergines and cheese.
Leaving feeling warm, fuzzy and fulfilled, I was already thinking about when I could have my next Skyline visit. KwaZulu-Natal will soon welcome cafe number three in Durban North, while still providing businesses with their wholesale coffee beans. It’s where it all begins and ends… with good coffee!

Locals Matt Smith and Tyran Faber talk about the benefits of property tokenisation and how the exciting new business, Brix, can help you unlock property investment opportunities.
In the ever-evolving landscape of real estate investment, a groundbreaking trend is gaining momentum – property tokenisation. This innovative approach is revolutionising the way individuals, regardless of financial background, can participate in property ownership and investment opportunities. Let’s delve into what property tokenisation entails and how it’s reshaping the future of real estate.
Imagine breaking down a property into digital tokens, each representing a fraction of ownership. This is precisely what property tokenisation accomplishes. Through blockchain technology, assets such as residential complexes, commercial buildings or land parcels are divided into tradable tokens, allowing investors to purchase fractional ownership with ease.
The process works by digitising realworld assets into blockchain tokens,
ensuring transparency, security and immutability of ownership records. Investors can then buy and trade these tokens seamlessly on digital platforms, eliminating traditional barriers to entry such as high capital requirements and geographic limitations.
One pioneering company leading the charge in property tokenisation is The Brix Group (Pty) Ltd, founded by cousins Tyran Faber and Matt Smith. Their vision is to democratise real estate investment, making it accessible to all South Africans. With investment opportunities starting from as little as R100 and no maximum limit, Brix is opening doors for individuals to participate according to their financial means and preferences.
At the heart of Brix’s offerings are two compelling products: the longerterm income fund and the 'flip' fund. The income fund allows investors to purchase shares in properties like
one-bed apartments in Emberton Estate, providing a steady stream of rental income and potential capital appreciation. On the other hand, the 'flip' fund offers investors the opportunity to buy shares in plots of land, which will be sold post-development, yielding projected returns between 17% and 20%. The international landscape is witnessing a surge in the adoption of property tokenisation, with experts projecting it to become a dominant force in the future of real estate investment. By leveraging blockchain technology, property tokenisation offers unparalleled liquidity, fractional ownership and diversification opportunities to investors worldwide.
From a legal perspective, the tokenisation of Real World Assets in South Africa is a viable and promising avenue for project owners and investors. Structured with the expertise of Schindlers Attorneys, you can be assured that stringent legal and compliance requirements have been met. With the appropriate legal framework in place, tokenisation offers increased liquidity, fractional ownership and enhanced accessibility to a broader range of investors, all while ensuring compliance with applicable regulations and protecting the interests of all stakeholders involved.
For those eager to explore the world of property tokenisation and seize investment opportunities with Brix Pty Ltd, a visit to the website provides access to registration and comprehensive information on available investments. As the real estate market continues to evolve, property tokenisation stands as a beacon of inclusivity, unlocking the doors to property ownership for investors of all backgrounds.

Meet Barry Holland
It’s 1 May 1967. Tommy Malone enters the Greyville Race Course, running towards a piece of tape that serves as the finishing line for the 42nd Comrades Marathon. Just a few metres before the end, Tommy fell, his body giving into a calf cramp. Manie Kuhn, who had been catching up to him, soars past Tommy and wins the race by one second, the closest finish in Comrades history.
Watching this iconic moment is a young Barry Holland. Inspired by the passion of these runners, he knew he had to be a part of this epic race. Nearly six decades later, at 72 years old, he is gearing up to run his 50th Comrades Marathon.
Barry is a born and bred Durban North local. He moved to Johannesburg at the age of 24 where he joined the Jeppe Athletics Club. Although many know him as a Striders member, he actually ran with Jeppe for most of his Comrades career. “My years at Jeppe were fantastic. I had a big hand in building the club. I love club life and the camaraderie of running with your mates,” he says.
Better schools and a wish to return to his roots led Barry and his family to the North Coast around 12 years ago. He found his new running home at Dolphin Coast Striders, which only had 80 members at the time (a far cry from the 500 today) and no firm ‘meeting’ spot. Like Jeppe, he became Chairman of the club and created a strong bond between all the runners, a lot of whom have run alongside him during Comrades Marathons. Barry was also part of restarting the Indian Ocean
Marathon, which galvanised the Striders and gave them a goal.
But let’s go back 50 years to Barry’s first Comrades. At 18 years old, he took to the roads of Durban North early in the morning to start training. This lasted two weeks before he decided running was not for him. When the next year rolled around, Barry thought he’d try again - perhaps he was wrong the first time… Unfortunately, this was not the case, and his ‘training’ only lasted three weeks!
“When I was 20, I told myself that this year I was going to train and I was going to run the Comrades - no excuses. After three weeks, I was close to giving up, but one morning I ran around a corner and saw a group of guys running together. They were the Regent Harriers. For the last three years, I just missed them during my runs. I started Comrades training with them, and the rest, as they say, is history.”

words Jordyn trollip
the iConiC moment that insPired Barry to run the Comrades
Running may seem like an individual sport - it’s just you, the road and your tekkiesbut it can also be very social, and this is what kept Barry going. On the other hand, it is also an extremely ‘mental’ sport and takes commitment. “You have to be very mentally strong. The Comrades is too long, too far, too hard - it’s easy to give up. Every day you have to make a choiceare you going to get up early every day to run or stay in your warm bed?”
Reflecting on 49 years of preparing for this world-famous marathon, Barry’s training has changed tremendously with age. “I divide my Comrades career into my racing years and surviving years,” he laughs. “I’ve gone from my best time of six and a half hours to finishing in 11 and a half hours. I used to train six days a week, about 140 kilometres, but can only do four days a week nowadays. It’s been difficult to accept that I can’t run like I used to. When you run this marathon, I believe you need to put everything out there and leave nothing on the road.”
Barry adds that the Comrades Marathon itself has also changed over the years in its enormity, from the number of runners, spectators and tables with water and
refreshments to the grand setups at the registration and finishing line. However, what has always stayed the same is the camaraderie and spirit felt at every race, which is what he loves most.
As Barry gears up for his 50th (and last) Comrades Marathon, he recognises the incredible journey it has been. “I’ve been fortunate enough to have a family that has supported me along the way.” To say that the Comrades ‘runs’ through Barry’s family’s genes is an understatement. Debbie, his wife, has run 20 Comrades Marathons and most of their seven children have run the marathon.
“The Comrades is a central theme in my life, but I have been blessed with so much more - successful businesses, lifelong friends, my kids and grandkids, and running in general. The journey of 50 Comrades has flowed like a river through my life,” Barry concludes.
You can support Barry during his 50th Comrades on 9 June 2024! This uphill race will end outside Scottsville Racecourse, so make sure you’re there to cheer him and the other Dolphin Coast Striders on!
did you know?
• each year, the comrades Marathon is either downhill (pietermaritzburg to durban) or uphill (durban to pietermaritzburg).
• all the comrades Marathons are not the exact same length (approximately 88 kilometres).
• runners have 12 hours to finish the marathon.
• Barry’s comrades racing bib is unique, sporting his name rather than his race number.
• Barry has never watched the comrades Marathon on tv because he’s been running the comrades since before the television was introduced in south africa!

ah, winter in Ballito - that magical time of year when the coastal breeze gets crispy and the surfers swap their caps for beanies. We all know the classic “Ballito Winter Men’s Fashion Starter Kits” - a shirt, jeans, and a good jacket for when it’s nippy, but always a pair of plakkies! fear not, fellow gentlemen of the coast, for there's a stylish solution in town - HEYDUDE!

It’s difficult not to think of Murray Collins when reflecting on the incredible growth of the North Coast. Zululami, Seaton and Club Med - these are just a few of Collins Residential’s ongoing projects. But, did you know his roots are deeply planted in Ballito? We chat with Murray about his history and innovative vision for the North Coast.
Who is Murray Collins? Apart from being the Director of Collins Residential (a development business that has perfected the art of creating communities where places, people and purpose matter), he is a happy conservationist turned businessman who has had the privilege of experiencing first-hand that old adage of “Love what you do and you’ll never work a day in your life”.
“My diverse business interests, together with my passion for sustainable development, have afforded me the opportunity to prioritise my commitment to preserving our natural heritage in a way that incorporates conservation values into all our projects,” says Murray. One such business is the development portfolio within Collins Residential.
With his family’s background in construction, it was only natural Murray decided to follow a career
in residential development. The birth of Collins Residential took shape when Geoff Perkins, a trusted colleague and friend, introduced him to several property development opportunities on the North Coast. “Geoff's vision and passion were instrumental in laying the foundation for what we have developed and achieved today,” he explains. “Together, we shared a clear mission: to take these magnificent tracts of sugarcane land and steward them into places where people would come together as a community while retaining the timeless charm of the area.” This duo wanted to be part of shaping Ballito’s future.
However, Murray’s connection to our coast goes a lot deeper than its development potential. His journey with Ballito began generations ago when his greatgrandparents secured a cottage on Kudu Road in 1950. Today, it is an iconic landmark on Willard Beach, which everybody knows as “the beach shack with the blue roof”. From those humble beginnings, his family's

connection to Ballito has grown. “I’ve witnessed its transformation from a fishing village, with sand roads and very few other houses, to a soughtafter tourist destination.” It’s no surprise Murray has such a vested interest in building Ballito and the surrounding areas!
“This rich history forms the bedrock of my vision for the North Coast. With each project we undertake, I strive to imbue a sense of heritage and belonging, drawing inspiration from the area's transformation over the decades,” says Murray. He strives to develop our coast in such a way that honours its natural splendour while fostering economic growth and community cohesion.
Murray and the Collins Residential team started with Zululami Luxury Coastal Estate, followed by Seaton Estate, Lalela Estate, The Manor House Venue and now Club Med. All of their projects are grounded in an unwavering commitment to quality, community and environmental responsibility, and sustainability guides all they do.
Murray is a key pillar of local development and sees a bright future for the North Coast. “While we can
certainly extol the virtues of our region, it's truly remarkable to witness the recent surge in international interest, with buyers from America, Germany and Panama among those who have recently invested in our developments. They are discovering what we have always known, yet sometimes overlooked: our region is truly an international destination.”
First and foremost, though, Murray is a family man. He is a father to twin girls and a son, all in their teenage years, who are his main priority.
“The values I try to instil in them are rooted in humility, environmental stewardship and the importance of fostering meaningful connections with others. I emphasise the significance of prioritising character over material possessions. Who you are is more important than what you are.” He’s thrilled his family is also lucky enough to call the North Coast home. “The weather is warm, and so are the people. I am invigorated when I receive calls from community members who recognise the positive impact we are making - it’s truly inspiring.”

On 26 April, Huizemark invited a few people from the local community to hit some shots from the challenging 4 th hole tee box. With excited chatter,
cold beers and fresh boerewors to nibble on, the competition was heating up. Avoiding shanks and a little wind was Jurgen Jacobs, the overall Closest to the Pin champion of the day! Amazing sponsors made the event extra special with fabulous prizes.
Huizemark’s initiative was aimed at getting potential buyers and investors on the estate to admire and envision the potential of the development. With the only golf course currently in construction in South Africa, the addition of Zimbali

This will put

The Habigs are proof that passion is genetic. After watching his father become a renowned rally racing driver, Benjamin hit the track himself to continue the legacy. We follow his racing career and incredible achievements.
racing is not just about driving fast. The amount of training, control and skill that goes into going around those sharp corners and beating record times can take years. In rally racing, your speed and navigation are challenged. The circuits are often undeveloped dirt roads, but not limited to them. It’s dynamic.
On the North Coast, the Habigs are known for their skills in the rally racing scene, with Jannie Habig being a well-known rally racing legend. His son, Benjamin Habig, has been behind the wheel before he could see over the dashboard.
“I grew up in Zinkwazi just north of Ballito where my parents still reside,” he shares. He has been racing since 2010, starting in a karting division before progressing to other classes. “Between 2012 and 2019, we scooped up a South African National title for the top karting class in South Africa (DD2 in 2019).”
In 2017, he made his main circuit racing debut and entered the top class competing in a Volkswagen Polo R2. “This consists of a 2L four-wheel drive system racing across South Africa and competing against other teams,” Benjamin explains.
| 49 www.TheBalli T omagazine.co.za
loCal
For training, he travelled to Idube (about one and a half hours from Ballito) which has a racing track perfect for learning the ropes. “Being at the race track and competing around the world was extremely intense and quite draining! Everything was always on the edge and we couldn't really make a mistake while racing. It was a massive release to have a mental break when we came back to Ballito,”
he recalls. Now living in Sandton, he sometimes misses that getaway, our community and the ocean.
Speaking of training, you can’t be the best there ever was without a great mentor. Benjamin found the wisdom and guidance he needed in his dad, a big name in local and international rally racing. “Racing has been in the family since before my older sisters
RACING FOR SA AND COMPETING AT THE WORLD FINALS HAS TO BE THE HIGHLIGHT OF MY RACING CAREER
were born, so naturally we’d spend the weekends around SA, following my dad wherever he was racing. As I got older, I joined my dad on test days down in PE with VW Motorport during their factory racing team days. I think that is where the bug really bit.”
From the beginning of his journey, he knew rally racing was something he wanted to do for a long time. With the knowledgeable direction from his father, he quickly rose up in the ranks. “My dad never pushed me into the racing scene until I asked him if we could go to the local karting track where we spent the day training,” Benjamin shares.
Benjamin pursued a career in Financial Advising after graduating from tertiary education, keeping his racing as a passion-fuelled hobby as he and his father intended when he began training. It’s been an activity that they can enjoy together, with many wins and some losses along the way.
“Racing for SA and competing at the world finals has to be the highlight of my racing career. Winning titles is great and having a South African title

feels amazing, but there isn't anything quite like the thrill of racing against the top national champions from around the world,” he shares. For his current category, his goal is to compete in the World Rally Championship, which is on the same level as Formula 1 for his sport.
As he prepares to continue his racing adventure and continue a legendary family legacy, he reminisces about his time in Ballito. “The sense of community and support I felt from friends, family and even neighbours was incredible,” he continues. “The atmosphere within Ballito cannot be replicated anywhere else.”
If you’re interested in taking up this sport, Benjamin suggests just enjoying yourself. “Taking the sport in its stride and enjoying its competitive nature help you progress a lot quicker than placing yourself under pressure.” However, it’s not all fun and games! “The training is also extensive.
There was a stage in 2017 when we were racing multiple disciplines and at a race track 46 weekends of the year. This was a bit of a sacrifice when I was younger but it helped me get to where I want to be - both now in my professional career as well as my sporting career.”

Tell us abouT yourself and your journey aT fideliTy
I spent 10 years with the Sharks and seven years playing rugby abroad before returning home for my wedding. During my two seasons back, COVID hit, leading to a new journey. Years ago, Fidelity planted the seed for this path. The Sharks were sponsored by Fidelity, and their CEO, Wahl Bartmann, often visited after games. His presence commanded respect and attention, and I admired his success on and off the field. I knew I wanted to align with someone like him.
When COVID struck, I reassessed my future. My wife was pregnant with our first daughter, Daisy, and we wanted her to be born at home. That's when the opportunity with Fidelity arose.
could you share a pivoTal momenT or individual who has significanTly influenced your approach To business and life?
Wahl Bartmann, CEO of Fidelity Group, has greatly influenced my business approach. Leading a company of 59,500 employees from a single guard is remarkable. Snow
Cogan and Gary Strydom were both influential businessmen who shaped my understanding of business fundamentals and values when I started with no business knowledge. Lastly, my family has been and will continue to be my rock in everything I do.
whaT do you love mosT abouT your career and fideliTy’s involvemenT in The balliTo communiTy?
What I love about Fidelity is it has given me a platform to have an impact on the community and give back to the community. We have relaunched the branch in Ballito, which wasn’t done overnight. With a dedicated team, a helicopter that patrols overhead every three days and so much more, we have come together for our community. It is also amazing to connect with the people from Ballito UIP, The Beach Collective and both the Ballito and Salt Rock Neighbourhood Watch. We truly have a wonderful community.
beyond business success, whaT legacy do you hope To leave behind?
No matter what material success I have achieved, I want to leave a positive impact on the lives of others.
whaT's one piece of advice you would give To aspiring business enThusiasTs, based on your own journey?
If you’re starting afresh and going through dark places and hard yards, unfortunately, what a lot of us do is delay our happiness until we reach a certain
destination or goal, and then we soon realise no matter what field we are in, the challenges never stop. You need to stop and celebrate the small wins along the way and do it with your team who you never take for granted.

I own La Piazza Restaurant and have been in Ballito for 13 years. I originally come from Welkom in the Free

I started in the restaurant industry here on the coast, but my family had a restaurant when I was 12,
how do you define success personally?
Most people would define it as wealth but I think it doesn’t always have to be monetary based. For me, I don’t like to be stagnant. I always try to take things and make them better. If I’m not growing, I feel stuck. I’m already mentally in 2025! If you have the mentality to maintain continuous growth, then you will succeed. So all in all, success is about being able to push your limits and boundaries, even if you fail.
can you share a significanT challenge you have encounTered in your career, and how did you overcome iT?
For me and I think many people, it was COVID. It was just the fear of the unknown and, in the restaurant business, you are so used to seeing customers and being around faces every day. They are the ones who make a restaurant a restaurant. We had to work around it so much to the point of doing takeaways to make ends meet - not just for the restaurant but for our staff as well.
giving me early exposure to the business. I began with a small pizzeria, Pizza Amor, which eventually grew into La Piazza.
could you share a pivoTal momenT or individual who has significanTly influenced your approach To business and life?
My father has greatly influenced my life. He was down-to-earth, had a good reputation, and taught me to be respectful and honest - no one could say a bad thing about him. In business, my father-in-law is my guide, always offering advice and support.
whaT's one piece of advice you would give To aspiring business enThusiasTs, based on your own journey?
My advice to anyone starting a business, especially a restaurant, is to go work in it before you invest - take your time. The most important thing is to run your own race.

In the 90s, I lived in Ballito near the post office while managing RJ’s and studying at Tongaat Hambanati High School. I started playing golf then and first heard about the Zimbali development concept around 1996/97. I was among the first to work for IFA Hotels & Resorts in South Africa.
My first job was as a protocol manager, hosting international guests and the owner's family. After the deal was made between Tongaat Hullett, the Zimbali developers and IFA, I became a director. When the golf course development launched, Leitch Landscapes was appointed for construction. Later, I was invited by Tongaat Group's Chairman, Chris Sanders, to get involved in Zimbali. I bought 30% shares in Leitch Landscape, became a director, and now own and run the company.
could you share a pivoTal momenT or individual who has significanTly influenced your approach To business and life? When I first had an opportunity to meet with Chris Sanders,
the former Tongaat Group Chairman, we became quite close. One thing I took away from Chris is to stay humble.

I define success as when you are content with what you have and what you have achieved. When you are genuinely happy in life and have a happy family, I see that as success.
whaT do you love mosT abouT being parT of This coasTal communiTy?
I have seen it grow from what it was to what it is today. I also love the people here. We are quite the rainbow nation, where the

The relationship between a father and son is something special, especially when it leads to a successful business! We spoke to a few dynamic dad-and-lad duos about how they navigate family life and running a business together.

Schalk Snr and Schalk Jnr own and run Retrolex Construction and Brick Master While Retrolex specialises in construction and renovation projects, Brick Master produces top-quality cement bricks and blocks for the North Coast.
Roughly 20 years ago, Schalk Snr decided to take a big leap and move the family to the KZN North Coast when there was a construction boom in the area. Schalk Jnr has been exposed to the world of construction since he could remember, it was inevitable for him to follow in his dad’s footsteps. In late 2016, Schalk Jnr started managing
Retrolex Construction and has been working hard to improve every day.
Even though their roles sometimes clash, being so similar, they work towards the same goals. They have grown together while growing the business and crafted roles that best suit their areas of expertise. Schalk Jnr is the current face of Retrolex Construction while Schalk Snr heads up Brick Master. They have each other's backs to support the other when needed.
What they love about working together is creating a legacy for their family that they can be proud of. They bond over recently completed projects and feel pride in the incredible work they have done. They wouldn’t trade this partnership for anything, even if Sunday lunch sometimes becomes a meeting. A key practice for this duo is to balance their family and business life and neglect neither of the two.
For other father-and-son duos who want to work together or start a business, Schalk Snr and Jnr relay, “It is so rewarding to work with people you know you can trust, but you will have to set boundaries and set your roles from the start to ensure this partnership works.”

Blarney & Son is an iconic duo who specialise in making any occasion fun and lively, whether it’s birthday parties, weddings, corporate events, clubs and pubs. The band was formed during lockdown when David Blarney found himself working remotely and his dad, Tony, had more time on his hands. They put together a set to test out their dynamic and then started to perform live. Their popularity has grown ever since!
The roles they play, so to speak, sometimes overlap, but they lean into their strengths to make each performance a resounding success. Tony has a magical voice and is skilled at learning song lyrics, and David helps out with backing and lead vocals. Behind the scenes, David manages the marketing and sales side of the band. When they’re on stage, however, Tony plays the bass, fiddle, penny whistle and mandolin and David plays the guitar, banjo and bass, completing their sound.
Working together deepens their bond as father and son - it’s an incredibly special relationship. They’ve become inseparable best friends who can tell what the other is feeling by their facial expressions.
As they travel all over the country and share their music with people, they feel a sense of pride and are moved by the positive responses they get from the crowds.
For them, that sense of accomplishment after a show is one of the best feelings in the world. It’s not all bliss as they miss special family milestones and often feel homesick, but they get through it together.
To work with a family member, they advise to keep emotions out of it, as difficult as that may be. Know your strengths and play into them. Most of all enjoy the experience together.

Afridecks was started 15 years ago with the goal of being Ballito’s largest and best decking company, and the business has certainly made a lot of headway.
Afridecks started with Des Hobart’s vision to move to Ballito and begin a grand decking venture. Their very first project was to complete the wooden work around the Fairmont Hotel in Zimbali (now the Capital Hotel). Since then, they have grown in size and popularity with the same carpenters they began the business with.
After venturing into the furniture business for a few years, Trystan joined his father at Afridecks, sharing a love for timber and construction. While they both occupy similar roles in the business, Trystan has introduced modern techniques to streamline work processes. Des, on the other hand, still adopts a time-honoured approach to managing. Even with these differences, they ensure that what needs to be done, gets taken care of.
The duo shares the workload, brings in clients and plans the way forward for projects. By combining their modern and old-school approaches, they
find alternative solutions to everyday challenges. This does create friction and disagreements between them at times, but they have learned to separate business from their relationships and carefully consider each other’s opinions.
“A piece of advice to other families looking to go into business together is to work on how to communicate clearly, precisely and rationally,” advise Des and Trystan. They believe there are many ways to solve a problem and opinions should be communicated and respected.

words LORINDA SCOTT | photos THANDA SAFARI
acomfortable drive from Ballito into the bush is our family's ultimate spoil and preferred “breathing space”! During this weekend trip, we stayed at Thanda Tented Camp at Thanda Safari and absolutely loved it! From the moment we arrived, the staff were super attentive and friendly.
The Game Drives
Our weekend started with a quick but very delicious late lunch. We then left for our first game drive of the trip, with reasonably low expectations (as we have done many safaris and, at times, seen almost no animals). We go on the drives for the experience, but we are always hopeful of seeing something cool.
How pleasantly surprised we were as our guide, Peace Nyawo, and our tracker, Sichivolo Myeni, worked really hard at making every drive an experience. I have to admit, Thanda delivered what I can only explain as
some of the most unique animal encounters we have ever had on a safari so far.
We sat and watched lions sleep out in the sun, while the younger lions showed their playful side, trying to wake up the older crowd. It was so special to watch real cat family dynamics right in front of us. We also saw very young cheetahs (still fluffy and rather uncoordinated) try their hand at stalking birds while mom kept an eye on them from afar. It was by far the cutest thing we have ever seen in the bush! We got close to elephants multiple times - so close we could see their skin texture and hear the mighty crunch as they ate.
The guide-and-tracker duo was truly amazing. Even on our last day, during the drive back to our car, they stopped twice for us to see rhinos wallowing in the mud and the impressive elephants just one more time.
| 61 www.TheBalli T omagazine.co.za
travel
We experienced some incredible sightings and there were many ‘safari firsts’ for us, which is always a bonus!
As always, the midway sunup or sundowner stops were fabulous. We were amazed when we had one unexpected, close-up elephant viewing as we stood, very still and in awe, as he walked right past us while we sipped on Amarula and watched the sun go down.
The sTay
The Luxury Tents were exactly that. These romantic safari suites are the ultimate in luxury camping. They are super comfy and all your needs are covered and met, with the option of a bath or shower in your tent to add to your preferred experience (the additional outdoor shower was also a big win!).
The Meru-style tents, which feature wooden floors and are decorated with classic Victorian furniture and finishings, are such a wonderful surprise. Each tent has a large bedroom, private sundeck and en-suite bathroom. Two days were not enough to enjoy this area, and I would happily book three nights away to fully relish in the vast patio, with its stunning bush views, having a relaxed coffee.
The Lazy a reas
We spent a lot of time just relaxing, enjoying the fire pit area and singing around the fire at night. Even though the pool was cold (this was a winter trip), we
lazed around the rim-flow pool surrounded by sun loungers with cocktails in hand. It was the perfect spot to soak up the warm African sun and go for a quick dip. These areas are made for relaxing between food and game drives!
The Foo D
One word: exceptional. At every sitting, the menu offered was fantastic - so much so that we had trouble deciding what to choose! To avoid food envy, we decided the best course of action was to order a variety of dishes and indulge in food sharing. The restaurant staff were so accommodating and easy-going. The chef came out at every meal to tell us a bit more about what was on his menu, which was such a nice touch and we appreciated getting his input. When asked, “What is good?”, his fabulous response was simply “Everything” (and he was right too!). Every meal is an occasion and we loved the bush banquet in the boma area. Traditionally dressed Zulu tribesmen
performed customary dances, adding to the evening’s festivities. The experience was very special. What is better than a true South African braai, pap and sous with all the bells and whistles enjoyed under the African stars? Perfection.
Thanda Safari, you truly exceeded all our expectations. We will be back for sure. If you’re interested in visiting Thanda Safari, check out their website. SADC rates are available on request.

between a barber and hangout spot. Mike's approach to barbering is distinctive. He explained the reason behind every snip throughout the experience and took me on a journey rather than a once-off haircut. This gave me complete peace of mind, which is very rare when you’re going to a barber for the first time. With a preference for appointments, he ensures each client receives the attention and care they deserve.
His thick English accent added to the charm of the experience, as he captivated me with tales from his homeland or eagerly listened to my own stories.
We’ve all had haircuts that didn’t turn out the way we wished, especially us guys who walk into any barbershop and hope our monthly trim looks presentable. So when I heard Punchy McCabe’s opened in Sage Centre earlier this year, I couldn’t wait to get a haircut from the qualified master barber himself. Stepping into this barbershop is like entering a sophisticated mancave, where a “help yourself” style bar intertwines seamlessly with the buzz of clippers and the snip of scissors.
I was instantly drawn by the charming setting of the shop, with the sound of a UK
radio station and TV in the background adding to the unique ambience. As I settled into the barber chair, I couldn't help but feel as though I was about to get a haircut from someone who knows exactly what they’re doing for the first time in my life!
Owned and operated by the friendly Michael McCabe, Punchy McCabe's is more than just a barbershop. It's a sanctuary for gentlemen seeking both impeccable grooming and genuine connections. With its inviting leather couch, mini pool table and well-stocked bar boasting a broad range of whiskeys, beers and odd drinks, Punchy's exudes an authentic blend
As the clippers hummed, I felt a sense of relaxation wash over me. With each precise snip, Mike worked his magic, transforming the remains of my previous haircut, tailoring it specifically to the way my hair grows. The experience was not just about the haircut. It was about the connection forged between master barber and client.
Emerging from Punchy McCabe's, I felt great and looked clean. The haircut was impeccable, but it was the sense of camaraderie and community that truly made the experience memorable. Punchy's is a place where friendships are forged, stories are shared and memories are made - one haircut at a time.

Perhaps, like me, you are one of those smug people who hasn't needed glasses until now. I've been an optometrist since the 90s and have always had regular health checks on my eyes. I have prescribed hundreds of pairs of glasses, and still, on some level, felt that surely I would be immune to ever needing specs. Welcome to your 40s, Joanne!
At first, I had glasses for tiny print when needed, then I could cheat a bit by brightening my phone screen and enlarging the font size. After a couple of years, I could no longer hide from it: I really do need these glasses.
What followed was the practical experience of the textbook advice I had been dishing out on different lens types for years: “You'll get used to them”, “It takes time”, etc. - my colleagues told me the same thing. I am lucky though that there is now a plethora of customisable work glasses available. No longer are we limited to reading glasses being left in every room or using one-size-fitsall multifocal designs that you could essentially wear all the time.
Each of our offi ces is unique with very specifi c visual demands. A home offi ce
with a laptop low down on a desk where you occasionally need to look up and chat with a family member who comes in to speak to you would need a very different lens design to a corner desk with three large, eyelevel monitors.
My advice is to give as much detail of your requirements to your optometrist as possible. How large is your screen, what distance is it from your eyes, what paperwork (if any) do you need to see, and at what distance? Do you need to interact with colleagues sitting further away or view a notice board at a specific distance? Do you attend or give presentations where you also need to refer to your notes? Is your
priority a computer pair of glasses that still allows you to see further away or rather a general-use pair that helps with reading? The more specific detail you can give us about what you need to see, the better we can advise you on the best lens type for you.
Even if you are comfortable with using over-the-counter reading glasses (even as a backup to your main specs), please do have an annual eye test to check on the health of your eyes. We want you to see well for years to come and most eye conditions are so much more effectively managed if they are picked up earlier. Your vision is precious and optometrists really are here to help you.

Navigating Market Cycles
The wonderful thing about markets is that they move in cycles. If we can identify a market's trend and underlying drivers, we can predict the near-term future with a high degree of certainty. This helps us take advantage of an upsurge in demand and pricing and guides us towards the timing of a purchase or sale.
Sales data for 10 leading estates within the greater Ballito area were analysed and revealed some interesting insights. The data set included Zimbali, Simbithi, Seaward, Palm Lakes, Dunkirk and Brettenwood as the established mature estates and Seaton, Zululami, Elaleni and Zimbali Lakes as the newer, emerging estates. Total sales in 2022 were R2,76 billion from 665 sales. Total sales in 2023 were R2,1 billion from 468 sales – down by -23,31% in rand value and -29,62% in number of sales. Not all estates felt the pain equally, with some winners emerging and some experiencing a more than proportionate loss.
The 2022 year was a bumper year for some of the estates, such as Simbithi which recorded over R1 billion in sales from 177 transactions, while Zimbali (the next largest in 2022) recorded R585,72 million from 82 sales. This indicates Simbithi is a wellestablished top trading estate. The future will reveal if the Seaton-Zululami combination eventually unseats Simbithi given that the emerging trend indicates this as a possibility.
The six mature estates experienced a sobering 2023 with sales down year-on-year by R781 million (or 34%) represented by 176 fewer sales. Zimbali and Simbithi recorded sales of R392,4 million (50 sales) and R609,8 million (106 sales) in 2023, respectively showing a -33% and -39.50% decline year-on-year. These two large-scale estates accounted for R591,5 million of the R781 million year-on-year decrease in sales across the six mature estates. If you were a seller within these two
estates last year, you would have felt the sharp edge of a true buyer’s market.
Interestingly, the four new emerging estates showed an R138,6 million (30,61%) increase in sales in 2023 over the prior year, demonstrating their success in attracting new buyers. Of the four new emerging estates analysed, only Zimbali Lakes showed a decrease in 2023 (-21,32%). With the introduction of the Ernie Els association with the new and almost playable Zimbali Lakes golf course, we expect a surge of interest and sales for Zimbali Lakes. The proposed Ernie Els Golf Academy will be a unique and first-of-its-kind facility in the area and an excellent marketing tool.
The most undervalued estate is currently Zimbali and the most fully valued estates are Simbithi and Dunkirk. The least traded relative to its size is Brettenwood. The most reliable and predictable estate is Seaward which delivered R130,7 million in sales in 2023 from 47 transactions which was only -8,94 % down on the prior year - the least impacted mature estate. The lowest use of mortgage finance to secure a property is found in Zimbali, with only 23,49% of sales value being debtfinanced. Palm Lakes has the highest level of mortgage finance at 56,15% of sales.
When the worst trading year in an area is represented by over R2,1 billion in annual sales from only 10 estates, you know you live in a vibrant, upwardly mobile area that remains one of the country’s great success stories.
Interestingly, the four new emerging estates showed an R138,6 million (30,61%) increase in sales in 2023 over the prior year
