ANOTE EDIToR'S

s the year winds down and the festive season wraps around us all, I can’t help but reflect on what this time of year truly means to me. Christmas has always been a celebration of hope, love, and renewal. But above all, it’s a moment for me to realign with what matters most: seeking the kingdom of God. I always feel like it’s a time to anchor our lives in faith, purpose, and the values that carry us through life’s highs and lows.

Looking back on the past year, I’m filled with pride at how much we’ve once again produced and worked on. The stories we’ve shared, the people we’ve connected with, and the lives we’ve hopefully touched – are very special. This year, I asked the team to adopt the motto “Live the Brand, Love the Brand”, and I’m thrilled to say they have embraced it wholeheartedly in everything they’ve done.

As I turn my thoughts to 2025, I feel a sense of excitement and determination. I hope to foster a spirit of unwavering belief that the people and businesses of the North Coast, and all of KZN, are on the brink of something extraordinary. There is a tangible shift happening, an energy that speaks to a future filled with bold optimism and shared success. After years of challenges, it’s time to reclaim our position as a key economic hub, a top tourist destination, and one of the most remarkable places to live and work in South Africa. To my incredible team at FabMags, Lorinda and I are beyond grateful for each of you. Your dedication and hard work make this such a wonderful place to be every single day.

Words don’t quite do justice to the gratitude we feel. Enjoy the well-deserved break – you’ve earned it – and we can’t wait to tackle 2025 together!

To our advertisers, your support means everything. A heartfelt thank you for trusting us to share your message and bring The Ballito to life. With your backing, our magazines reach over a million readers each year – a milestone we couldn’t achieve without you! Thank you for being part of our journey.

And to you, our readers, thank you for your loyalty and support. We love celebrating the North Coast and sharing stories about this vibrant community we all call home. You’re the heart of everything we do, and we’re so grateful to have you along for the ride. We hope you enjoy our bumper Christmas edition with over 30 different stories, features, and regulars to keep you entertained, informed, and inspired over the holidays.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all. May this season bring joy, love, and a renewed sense of purpose for the year ahead.

Till our next edition, God bless.

FENESTRA WHY with invest

A Once In A Lifetime Investment Opportunity

Ateam comprising of experienced and dedicated professionals with a passion for the stock market, Fenestra Asset Management’s investment philosophy considers both the growth and value styles of investing.

Fenestra structures and manages specialist share portfolios both locally and offshore. Their competitive fee structure also enhances client returns. Fenestra charges a fee that’s a percentage of assets under management, and that’s it.

The generation AI market size was estimated at US $13 billion in 2023 and is expected to grow at a compound rate (CAGR) of 36.5% from 2024 to 2030. AI companies are growing rapidly, several at over 100 per cent annually and there is a huge appetite for these stocks from investors. This is a very disruptive technology with so many opportunities.

It’s a game changer, offering investors a rare chance to capitalise on transformative technology and opportunities abound in the established AI giants, AI-centric ETFs, and innovative startups. Cloud computing giants like Amazon, Microsoft, and Google are major players in AI and investing in cloud platforms is mission critical and many companies will benefit.

What exactly is AI?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a set of technologies that enable computers to perform a variety of advanced functions. The goal for AI is to be able to do things such as recognise patterns, make decisions, and judge like humans.

What does it do?

It reduces human error, increases efficiency, performs advanced data analysis, makes new inventions, personalises your files, and organises workflow and much more.

Where to invest?

Nvidia (a key innovator of computer graphics and AI technology in California. Their invention of the GPU in 1999 sparked the growth of the PC gaming market, redefined computer graphics, and ignited the era of modern AI), which is up to 230% in the past year. Fenestra has identified other companies like SMCI (Super Micro Computer Inc) and ARM Holdings on the periphery and mainstream AI that are all set to profit from this trend.

The Mission

Fenestra strives to be a great South African and international specialist investment group. They are driven by a passion for outstanding performance and an unwavering commitment to their philosophies and core values.

Let’s be real: New Year’s resolutions are like gym memberships - great in theory, but most of us drop them by February. We promise ourselves we’ll wake up at 5:00 a.m., meditate, go for a run, meal-prep quinoa salads, and become a better human by the end of January. Yet, by January 15th, we’re back to hitting the snooze button, inhaling leftover holiday cookies, and convincing ourselves that the treadmill is a metaphor for life (you know, always running but getting nowhere).

Why do New Year’s resolutions fail so often? Simple: we’re setting ourselves up for failure. Here’s why they don’t work - and what you can do instead:

Resolutions are too Vague

“I’m going to lose weight.” Cool, but how? When? How much? Do you have a plan, or are you just winging it and hoping your fridge magically stops restocking itself with snacks? Broad, undefined goals lack direction. Without a roadmap, even Google Maps couldn’t save you.

Instead: set specific, achievable goals. “I’ll go for a 30-minute walk three times a week” is much more actionable than “I’ll get fit.” Make your goals bite-sized. Start small, win big!

You’re Relying on the Calendar for motivation

Newsflash: the calendar doesn’t care about your goals. January 1st is just another day that happens to follow December 31st. There’s no cosmic energy on New Year’s Day that suddenly makes you a productivity machine. If you weren’t motivated in November, flipping a page in your planner isn’t going to magically change that.

Instead: start when you’re ready - not when the calendar tells you to. If you’re feeling inspired on a

random Tuesday in July, that’s your moment. New Year’s resolutions try to squeeze personal growth into a onesize-fits-all timeline, but real change can start anytime.

You Focus on the end Goal, not the Process

We love dreaming about the end result - being debt-free, running a marathon, or mastering the art of sourdough. But the day-to-day process? Not so glamorous. And if you focus only on the big goal, the moment things get tough, it’s easy to give up.

Instead: fall in love with the process. Enjoy each small victory, whether it’s paying off a tiny bit of debt or jogging without wheezing for 10 minutes. Success is a series of small wins, not one giant leap.

You’re trying to Do It Alone

Most New Year’s resolutions are solo missions. And when you’re on your own, it’s easy to let things slide. “I’ll just skip today. No one will know.” Spoiler alert: You’ll know.

Instead: find accountability. Share your goals with a friend, join a group, or get a buddy to cheer you on - or at least stop you from binging Netflix when you should be working out.

So ditch the resolutions. Instead, create small, manageable goals, start whenever you feel ready, focus on the process, and find your squad. You’ll make more progress than any list written in a champagne haze ever could!

New Year’s resolutions try to squeeze personal growth into a onesize-fits-all timeline, but real change can start anytime

these fun, family-friendly spots scattered throughout the town this holiday season!

The much awaited December holidays have finally arrived, the kids are at home and are enjoying every minute they have, free from school’s obligations. Now, the challenge is on the parents to keep them occupied and keep up with the short attention span. Fortunately, Ballito has more than a few spots that offer both parents and children a break from each other.

We begin at the Hidden Forest Wildlife Sanctuary, located just 20 km inland from Ballito, far enough to get out of town, but close enough to deter “Are we there yet?” questions. This stunning 23-hectare forest provides a safe home for naturally occurring indigenous wildlife, rescued lemurs and exotic monkeys. Here, you can explore the forest with your family, and learn about the wildlife with a knowledgeable guide. All the animals in the sanctuary roam freely around, not confined to any cages or enclosures. As you explore, you may encounter capuchin and squirrel monkeys foraging for insects and ring-tailed lemurs soaking up the KZN sunshine.

House Mooney embodies a unique blend of sustainability and style, where the simplicity of a modern farmhouse creates a space thoughtfully designed to flow with nature.

Within Elaleni Coastal Forest Estate, stands House Mooney. This home is radiant when the sun shines on the white, bag-washed walls and the lush garden surrounding the property. The friendly, light atmosphere is enhanced by the pebble garden and herring bone wooden entrance door.

With decades of experience on the North coast, Wendy Bouwer from Bridgewater

Spencer Architects and Pat O'Reilly from Orizon Projects, collaborated on this project. Together they offer a complete management solution in residential and commercial projects and aim to shape a home that seamlessly harmonises with the land, embodying the client’s vision for both elegance and sustainability.

The site was well-suited for the house, as Patrick and Candice wanted a single storey home.

The property they purchased was flat and northfacing, absolutely ideal. Wendy was able to design their home with all of the main living spaces being north facing north. This creates privacy between the home and the road and also reduces the harmful effects of western light.

At just under 350m², House Mooney has three bedrooms, all with en-suite bathrooms. Each room and bathroom is unique with subtle changes which still link to the overall aesthetic of the home. Built with longevity in mind, the house features many ecofriendly elements which are durable and reflect the Estate’s commitment to sustainability. The house is fitted with solar panels, and uses less than half of its energy from the grid. There is also a water harvesting system installed into the house to utilise rainwater. The roof, done by Seacon Roofing, is aluminum, ideally suited to our seaside climate and insulated to keep the interior cool during summer and warm during winter. The thick insulation has a dual purpose in that it also lessens the noise during rainfall. Large roof overhangs shelter windows and doors. A standout feature of House Mooney are the industrial aluminium windows and doors which were designed by Wendy to have the same ratio throughout the house. All the rooms in the home were adjusted to suit this configuration. These doors and windows were fitted

by AnRon Glass and Aluminium. The resulting effect is a sense of rhythm and symmetry that adds to the charm of the house.

The home is designed to have a contemporary farmhouse feel, combining elements like a doublepitched roof with exposed beams, ambient lighting, and exposed brick walls in the living spaces to create a timeless sanctuary. Walking through the house, there is a continuity of light wood and neutral colours. The flooring, done by Inovar Flooring, used the Authentic Herringbone laminate flooring in the Sun Bleached Oak shade from Finfloor. The colour gives the home a warm and inviting feel throughout, blending in with the light-coloured finishes.

The living area is an open-plan space, consisting of the lounge, dining area, and kitchen. The heart of the home – the kitchen – is highly personalised, featuring an island, low-hanging lights, built-in cupboards with sliding glass doors, and a scullery area. Kingston Kitchens created this central space that connects and fits into the rest of the house.

Even the extractor over the stove is clad in the same light wood as the island, creating a sense of uniformity, but still letting each part shine and contrast with the dark rims around the cupboards.

The kitchen opens up to an inner courtyard, this is a special feature of the house, giving light and fresh air internal space and creating a space for relaxation that feels as if one is outdoors but which is not outside of the house. Moving through the open plan living area, stacking industrial doors open onto the outside area, with a seamless pool, lounging area, fire pit, and braai facilities.

Back inside the house, walking further down, you pass the two secondary bedrooms to the main bedroom. The main bedroom also features the exposed beams, adding a dimension of height, with French doors which open out to the pool area. The main bathroom is a wet room, with an open shower area and a standalone bathtub which flow out onto an outdoor shower area and garden area - a tranquil setting under the open sky. The cabinetry in the bathroom features a dual sink with backlighting, casting an ambient glow on the bathroom.

With an eye for aesthetics, sustainability, and longevity, the team has crafted a home designed to satisfy and to stand as a timeless retreat in the coastal landscape.

Dive into the depths of passionate pursuits - from fishing charters to jet skiing and spearfishing, these ocean lovers share their thrilling adventures and timeless bonds with the sea.

Deep Sea Fishing

Keano’s passion for fishing began early, influenced by his dad. By four, he was already hooked, dreaming of real adventures after playing with a wooden boat in the pool. "All I wanted was to go on a boat and fish," he recalls fondly.

With having had his father as his teacher, learning was natural and enjoyable. What keeps him hooked is “the chase,” along with the freedom and adventure the ocean offers. Fishing is more than a hobby for him – it’s a lifestyle.

Now working with African Fishing Outfitters, he guides others on charters, living out his dream on the open water. One of his most memorable moments was when his KP reel broke midtrip. Rather than giving up, Keano pulled in 600 metres of line by hand, a testament to his determination.

For those starting out, Keano’s advice is simple: “Start with a paddle ski.” He believes in building up skills gradually, just as he did under his father’s guidance. Along the way, fishing has brought him not only adventure but

lasting friendships. If he could relive one moment, it would be catching a Marlin with his dad, using his underpants as a makeshift flag in place of the real one – proof that the best memories are often unplanned. Looking to the future, Keano is excited

about advancements like new fish finders and the rising popularity of the sport, especially among the younger generation. For him, fishing is an endless adventure that keeps calling him back.

Jet Ski Fishing

Kevin's love for fishing has always been part of him, but moving to Ballito a decade ago took it to the next level. After joining the Ballito Ski Club, he was inspired to try jet ski fishing. "It felt like a natural progression," he says. The local fishing community played a big role in helping him get started.

Kevin is drawn to the tranquillity of the ocean. "Salmon Bay isn’t the easiest launch, but once you’re out there, it’s peaceful. Catching fish? That’s just a bonus!" For him, it’s also about the camaraderie with

fellow fishers, making each outing more about connection than just the catch. Equipment is key, and Kevin highlights the importance of specialised tackle and a lifejacket.

"Trying to take a photo with a fish is tricky, though," he laughs. "I’ve lost fish while trying to snap a photo. It’s frustrating, but part of the fun!"

His advice for newcomers?

"Join a club first. The local guys can guide you on gear, and I’m always happy to help." The sense of community makes the sport rewarding, with no discrimination, just a shared love of fishing.

Kevin is excited about new technology, particularly the Yamaha FX HO 1900, which is perfect for surf launching. He believes advancements like this are changing the sport for the better. Jet ski fishing is also growing fast, especially among men. "It’s practical

and more cost-effective than a boat."

For Kevin, jet ski fishing is a passion that fuels his connection with the ocean and the fishing community.

Spearfishing

Bruce’s journey into spearfishing began as a teenager on the coast, turning a simple love for snorkelling and foraging into a lifelong passion. At 16, he got his first piece of gear – a Rob Allen 1.2 speargun – and experienced the thrill of his first catch, a moment he describes as exhilarating. Growing up around water made his transition into spearfishing feel natural, progressing from snorkelling to more complex techniques with ease.

Today, spearfishing is more than a sport to Bruce; it’s become a way of life. “Diving is like entering a different world,” he says, explaining how it offers a unique experience compared to mainstream sports. He’s even adjusted his lifestyle, now eating mostly the fish he catches. Spearfishing has taught him to stay calm

and focused, skills that are essential underwater and in life. He encourages beginners to practise in tidal pools and join a local club, as the spearfishing community is built on shared experiences and continuous learning.

One of Bruce’s most unforgettable moments occurred this year, after nearly three decades of diving: he encountered his first Great White shark 6km offshore, a humbling reminder of the ocean’s vastness and power. Despite some technical advancements in gear, he appreciates that spearfishing has largely stayed the same. Since COVID, he’s noticed more people joining the sport, drawn by a desire for adventure and connection with nature, something Bruce finds inspiring about this growing, tight-knit community.

from shark attack survivor to an ocean advocate

South African conservation organisation WILDTRuST released a touching short film earlier this year, Caleb: Beyond the Bite, which follows the journey of award-winning actor, para-athlete, and shark bite survivor Caleb Swanepoel.

In a heart-wrenching and inspiring account, Caleb contemplates swimming with sharks for the first time since losing his leg to a white shark in 2015. Through his story, Caleb takes viewers on a powerful journey of loss, growth, and insight, offering a unique perspective on sharks and the importance of conservation.

Shark conservation Sharks and rays are facing unprecedented threats worldwide. One of the primary obstacles to their survival is the widespread misconception and fear surrounding these magnificent creatures, leading to targeted killings and persecution.

“Caleb approached us over a year ago to find out if he could help with our marine conservation work under the WILDOCEANS programme and had a specific interest in learning more about sharks.

Jen’s J ourney through dance

In a world where many search for purpose, Jen found hers in the rhythm of life - through dance. Her journey is a testament to how passion, when driven by a deeper calling, transforms into a purpose that touches lives and inspires change. Jen’s love for dance was sparked by

her deep connection to music, which she describes as "therapy" for the soul. Growing up, dance was her way to express herself and connect with the richness of music. During her time in Miami, watching street dancers made her realise that dance didn’t have to be confined to a studio. “It

was the right place, right time,” she says, marking the beginning of what would become Jive with Jen, her own dance studio.

Jen’s realisation that her passion had a higher purpose came unexpectedly. While teaching kids for fun, she

discovered her talent for connecting with them on a deeper level. In 2021, a life-changing moment occurred when she worked with a special needs child, using dance to help her open up socially. This moment made Jen realise that her calling wasn’t just about sharing dance but using it as a therapeutic tool. Jive with Jen is about more than just dance; it’s life coaching through movement. The studio’s mantra, "come as you are", reflects Jen’s desire to break traditional boundaries and create a space that celebrates self-expression.

moves and creating a safe environment where each child can thrive. “It’s all about giving them space while ensuring they’re having fun,” she explains.

Jen believes that every child has unique abilities, and dance helps them express those talents in ways that words cannot

Her passion also led her to special needs education. In 2022, she began pursuing an Early Childhood Development diploma and started teaching at a local school, Bloom, in 2023. Her classes have become emotional breakthroughs for the children, especially during a year-end dance showcase which left no dry eyes in the room. “I realised my work was making a real difference,” Jen says.

Jen believes that every child has unique abilities, and dance helps them express those talents in ways that words cannot. To cater to special needs children, she uses thoughtful strategies like adjusting the music volume, simplifying dance

Throughout her journey, Jen has found inspiration in mentors like Dom and Sisi from the Performing Arts Centre and Nicola from Bloom, who have helped her grow. As for the future, Jen plans to continue and complete her Licentiate International Drama diploma and expand Jive with Jen into Shuffle Studio Ballito, offering more movement, fitness, and expression services like roller-skating parties, drama lessons, party studio rentals, and Pilates infusion classes. Jen also plans to further her skills in Child Psychology and neurodance therapy, as she believes this is her ultimate calling.

Jen’s message to the Jive with Jen community is simple: “If you have a passion - pursue it. Your passion holds hidden talents, and when you pursue them, they create happiness and inspiration.” Through dance, Jen has created not just a business, but a space for healing, joy and self-expression, one groovy move at a time.

the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast is rapidly emerging as South Africa’s prime location for lifestyle and investment. Boasting record-breaking property sales, ongoing infrastructure upgrades, a rising population, and income levels – this region is redefining growth and opportunity.

The North Coast’s real estate market continues to thrive, with Seaton consistently achieving steady sales that outperform market trends. Since its launch in 2020, demand has remained strong, with notable milestones such as R100 million in freehold land sales over just 10 days during the Easter weekend. Several precincts have sold out shortly after launch, showcasing the ongoing appeal of this exceptional development. These sales reflect the demand for secure, estate living, as properties within the region command a 24% price premium above those outside of estates in Salt Rock.

Since 2011, the North Coast has experienced an 11% population growth,

equating to 73 new households moving into the area each month. This influx is complemented by a remarkable increase in average household income, establishing the region as an economic hub with a high standard of living.

Global tourism appeal

The North Coast is also making an impact on the global tourism scene. Club Med South Africa Beach & Safari Resort, which is set to open in July 2026, promises to revolutionise the region’s travel offering. Recently, developers Collins Residential hosted Club Med partners and a French delegation led by Ambassador David Martinon, showcasing progress on this luxury resort that combines coastal and safari experiences.

Recent infrastructural investments in the North Coast have boosted accessibility and growth. The newly tarred P228 road in Sheffield now allows direct access to Seaton's entrance and connects to the upcoming N2 cloverleaf junction, which is expected to begin construction later this year. These improvements are critical to providing smooth connectivity for both residents and visitors.

Standout performers driving success North Coast estates are in high demand, achieving faster sales success than other regions in KZN. Standout performers include Lalela Estate and Zululami Luxury Coastal Estate. Lalela Estate, launched in 2022, is set to welcome its first homeowners this December; a remarkable achievement for a new development. Land sales are progressing steadily, with civil works having already begun. Zululami Luxury Coastal Estate has also shown extraordinary success, with more than 93% of its single residential stands sold. Only 25 stands remain, demonstrating its continued popularity and strategic development. An already bustling community, Zululami exemplifies vision and commitment, fulfilling its promise of luxurious beachfront life.

The North Coast’s combination of property demand, infrastructure investment, and tourism potential underscores its status as a premier destination for living and investment.

Orange long linen dress UNIQ

As summer unfolds, the world of women's fashion has been swayed by TikTok's embrace of breezy, relaxed styles. This season, it's all about comfort paired with chic detailing, where flowing fabrics and statement pieces set the scene for a wardrobe that captures the essence of laid-back sophistication. Let’s dive into the key trends shaping this summer.

It’s the return of linen as the undisputed fabric of the season. Natural, lightweight, and breathable – linen embodies effortless cool. From wide-leg trousers from Willow&Ruby to beige vests from Sweet Peas, linen pieces have dominated TikTok style videos, proving that fashion can be both chic and practical.

Influencers show off their linen pieces in versatile looks: like a crisp, white linen shirt from Breazies paired with high-waisted linen shorts from Sweet Peas for daytime outings or a bright-coloured linen dress like the one from uNIQ – perfect for a sunset dinner by the beach.

The "flowy on flowy" trend has become a staple on TikTok fashion pages, with creators experimenting by pairing maxi dresses with oversized, open button-down shirts. This combination showcases how to embrace a carefree yet put-together look that’s perfect for casual strolls or picnics by the sea.

White Linen Long Pants Willow&Ruby

Summer wouldn’t be complete without the perfect statement piece, like a summer hat from Willow&Ruby or a chunky basic sandal like the pair from SAINT&SuMMER … oh, and graphic tees are back with a vengeance! So many stores have a wide range of options like the cherry graphic tee from Foschini, whether tucked into linen trousers or worn as a cover-up over swimwear, graphic tees add a fun, youthful energy to any summer wardrobe.

One of the most versatile staples this season is the short dress like the olive green dress from Cotton On – a flowy piece that can transition seamlessly from day to night. Whether in cotton or linen, these dresses are favoured for their adaptability.

This season’s wardrobe is defined by a love for comfort-driven pieces that is all about embracing effortless elegance. TikTok has made it clear: fashion this summer isn’t about trying too hard – it’s about moving with grace and style.

At just 30-years-old, Aphiwe Kedama-Hagel, known affectionately as "Apples," is redefining what it means to chase dreams and embrace new opportunities.

WORDS Kai CoaTeS
"Focus on your own lane, and you’ll create your opportunities in your own time."

Apples' journey began at Dynasty Gym in Ballito, where she was introduced to the world of pageantry. Eager to revive her modelling career, she saw it as a chance not only to showcase her talents but to meet new people and build connections in her new home. With hard work and dedication, Apples’ efforts paid off. She won “Top Model North Coast” and “Mrs Queen of South Africa” at the prestigious Zimbali event. She also claimed titles in the "Beauty with a Purpose" and "Public Choice" categories - an impressive feat for someone just stepping back into the modelling world.

Her determination didn’t stop there. With iPOP (International Presentation of Performers) in Los Angeles on the horizon, she pushed herself even harder, training with the SA Beauty Academy and DMH Talent Agency. The timing was tight - just one week separated the pageant from her departure to LAbut Apples wasn’t deterred.

Travelling from Ballito to LA marked the start of her next big adventure. The iPOP event was an intense experience filled with boot camps, auditions, and performances, all

in front of renowned international artists and agencies. Most days began at 7:00 a.m. and stretched late into the night, with a whirlwind of outfit changes, rehearsals, and showcases.

The nerve-wracking moment of callbacks arrived, and it was here that Apple's hard work truly shone. Out of the 11 agencies that had initially selected her, four more expressed interest by the end of callbacks. With 15 agencies recognising her talents, Apples knew that her dedication had paid off. The highlight of the iPOP experience

was being selected as the lead female in the acting showcase and walking the runway for KAFTV Model Talk. Her efforts were further rewarded when she took home a 1st runner-up medal for the "Bikini Runway" category and won a gold medal for the "TV Beauty Commercial" category.

But the adventure didn’t stop there. On a high from her success, Apples’ partner re-proposed to her in the most romantic, spontaneous way. What started as a joke about eloping to Las Vegas became reality when the couple tied the

knot in a Vegas wedding, complete with Elvis Presley serenading them through the ceremony. "07/07 will forever be one of my favourite dates," Apples shares. "I'm officially a wife to the love of my life!"

Back from LA and Vegas, Apples wasted no time getting to work. Teaming up with Durban-based DJ Morgan, Apples started recording her original music. After many meetings, she made the bold decision to sign with Indasoul Entertainment, an artist development agent in LA, embarking on a thrilling new chapter. "I chose based on support and vibes," she says, confident in her choice. With two songs, a music video, and a visualiser in the works, her dreams are quickly becoming reality.

Apples’ vision for her music is clear: "I want my music to evoke power and strength, but also bring joy and make people smile." Her brand has always been about empowerment, and she wants that to shine through in her music.

Reflecting on her journey, Apples offers sage advice to anyone chasing their dreams: "It’s never too late to become who you might have been." Having rebooted her life at 30, she knows first-hand that opportunities often come when you least expect them. "Don’t compare yourself to anyone else," she adds. "Focus on your own lane, and you’ll create your opportunities in your own time."

With her return to LA in November and plans to release her music worldwide next year, the future looks incredibly bright for Apples. Her journey is just beginning … Stay tuned, because Aphiwe (Apples) Kedama-Hagel is about to take the world by storm.

Quench your skin's thirst with nourishing, hydrating products and unlock radiant skin!

As the temperature warms up and the holiday season rolls in, summer skin care is all about light hydrating layers and prioritising sunscreen. Summer days by the poolside or weeks living out of a travel toiletry bag means that your skincare routine should be simple. You will be moving away from your heavy, rich and

thick creams, and leaning towards hydration and glow. My top sunscreen choice is pHformula’s u.V. Protect SPF 50+ Pro Defence 3 which is lightweight, invisible, and sting free. It restores DNA activity, reduces redness, has a triple action photo protection and prevents photo ageing. This product also comes in a tinted formulation which is perfect for

an all-in-one summer product. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant which helps prevent DNA damage caused by uV ray exposure. Important in collagen production, Vitamin C helps reduce fine lines and wrinkles, brighten the skin and lightens hyperpigmentation. My top pick is pHformula’s VITA C Serum, not only because it contains three forms of Vitamin C, but it also contains Hyaluronic Acid and a 3D HYDRA Complex that hydrates and plumps the skin. Summer heat and humidity saps the moisture from our skin, so this is a great multi-purpose product that will leave you feeling hydrated and glowing!

and humidity drains the moisture from our skin, so

this is a great multi-purpose product that will leave you feeling hydrated and glowing!

How you start is always important, so I recommend pHformula’s EXFO Cleanse, which is a 4-in-1 cleanser, exfoliator, make-up remover, and mask. It refines the texture of your skin while hydrating it at the same time. And my goto moisturiser is pHformula’s Post Recovery Cream with Niacinamide, Panthenol, and Lactobionic Acid.

The team let us in on some fun facts and information about themselves!

fast foiler, brunette but loves “to Blonde”, can't keep still, always up to something, boss lady

"For me, colouring is the most rewarding part of my job. My passion began at a young age - I started cutting my friends' hair at just four-years-old (yes, I got into trouble!). But by high school, I had honed my skills.

Just as a gym routine requires a balanced diet, healthy hair demands proper home care. Regular maintenance is crucial for keeping your hair in top condition for your next colour treatment. Hair chemicals can be intricate and unforgiving; they can make or break your hair in seconds.

Social media can be a hairstylist's worst nightmare, as expectations and reality often get lost in translation. However, it's also the industry's most valuable tool, offering limitless learning opportunities, inspiration, and step-by-step guides at your fingertips, leaving you feeling more confident than ever.

For my clients, I always say, embracing your natural hair is beautiful, experimenting with different styles and colours can be exhilarating. So have some

fun, try it all! My ideal client - well I know a lot about menopause and I could write a book by now LOL, it says a lot about my lovely clientele! Clearly my best lady clients are thoroughly enjoying life again, we get on great hahaha!"

michelle Ria

knows everything about anything (#mrsGoogle), extension queen, salon music player, juggler of clients

Ria

Fabulously loud, chatter box, old soul, big hugger, cat lover

“For me, healthy hair is so essential, as its condition significantly impacts the final outcome. I've always experimented with my own hair, often getting into trouble (even at school due to my bold colour choices, the challenge of growing up in a small, conservative town). I have a flair for styling funky, short pixie cuts and love working with clients in their golden years.

Product wise, I love the Brass-Off Treatment for my clients, it eliminates unwanted brassiness and revives tired looking blonde.

For fun, seasonal looks, I recommend highlights. You can be blonde for summer, and apply a semi or demi permanent dye for lowlights in winter. Best of both worlds!”

“It all started when at eight-years-old, I showcased my passion for hairstyling while living on a sustainable farm in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). I decided to take my clippers down to the staff accommodation, rounded up all the kids and gave them a 3 cm-wide part in their hair - I thought they looked fabulous!

Being right-brained, I need to see, to understand, including the chemistry behind hair products, I need to know what’s in it and how it works. I’m still a pain today as I always research ingredients.

My best client is someone with a clear vision, but open to suggestions, and equipped with lots of pictures. Communication is key, as what a client says and what a stylist hears can be poles apart. Product wise, I highly recommend Magic Mist by Mycro Keratin. Its shine, smell, and heat-protecting properties make it ideal for all hair types.”

Lucille and I were invited to experience treatments at Skin Solutions. Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted by Dr Naidoo and senior aesthetic therapist Maxine Chetty. We were excited to be escorted into our comfortable rooms for our therapy.

I had the Hydrafacial treatment, and I loved that it was exactly what my skin needed! Utilising Vortex-Fusion technology, the Hydrafacial opens pores for easier delivery of active ingredients. The process began with a gentle exfoliating peel, followed by a painless extraction via suction. Every aspect of this treatment can be tailored and personalised, including the wand tips for varying exfoliation levels, suction intensity based on extraction needs and skin sensitivity, and nourishing boosters. Next, an intense moisturiser was

applied to saturate my skin. This treatment aims to diminish wrinkles, tighten skin, and even skin tone. I loved that the Hydrafacial yields instant results (the "junkie jar" was fascinating to see, displaying the removal of makeup, pollution, blackheads, and dead skin cells).

Post-treatment, my skin boasted an awesome, hydrated look and glow, bringing me one step closer to achieving the best skin of my life!

Lucille got to experience the Skin Pen Microneedling treatment. First, a topical anaesthetic was applied on her face to ensure maximum comfort followed by a LIFT Hydrogel for easy gliding and comfort while providing hydration. The Skin Pen was used to create thousands of controlled microchannels in her skin, activating her body's natural wound-healing abilities, with only slight tingling sensations. This

procedure increases collagen and elastin production, restoring a healthier, more youthful appearance.

After the treatment, Lucille's skin looked smoother, even-toned, and remarkably refreshed, with a noticeable reduction in fine lines and wrinkles. We both also had a Skin Brightening IV Infusion drip. This detoxifying cocktail boosts energy levels and enhances skin health, making it the perfect addition to our treatments.

Thank you, Dr Naidoo and Maxine Chetty, for your exceptional care and expertise. We left Skin Solutions feeling revitalised and radiant!

Is there anything quite like summer in KZN? Long, lazy days at the pool, family time on the beach, and so many outdoor activities and sports for us to enjoy. We are often great with protecting our skin from uV light but do we do the same for our eyes?

uV protection

uV protection is a good way to help maintain healthy eyes and good vision for when we are older. Glare protection and shielding your eyes from wind and dust also keeps them looking good (and feeling less irritated) too.

The North Coast is such an active sporting community and for ball sports especially, protecting our eyes should be an important priority whether or not we wear prescription glasses.

eye safety

Padel, squash, cricket, golf, hockey, tennis, and even soccer can lead to unexpected eye injuries, with balls reaching surprising speeds. As an optometrist, I have seen first-hand how lasting eye damage can be prevented with the right protective eyewear. This is important for all of us, and is especially so for those of us who are dependent on glasses. Normal day-to-day glasses that can break easily and knock into a person’s eyes aren’t ideally safe enough for us or our children during sports.

Comfort

While safety is key, the right sports protective glasses add so much to our enjoyment of the game (think serving in tennis with less glare from facing the sun, or enjoying the trails without dust, branches, wind or stones being a problem).

Features to look out for in sports-appropriate eyewear for us and our children:

• A big enough lens and frame to protect the whole eye socket.

• A small enough lens opening to block the ball e.g. in squash.

• Higher impact resistance lens material (like polycarbonate or similar).

• Scratch and fog-resistant coatings, with tints that adjust to brightness.

• The frame should be adjustable, strong and designed to break away from the eyes on impact.

• Comfortable frames that you love and are more likely to wear!

Contact lenses also play an important role Daily disposable contact lenses are a hygienic option for even younger children to see better once or twice a week during sports matches.

Chat with your optometrist for advice on prescription and non-prescription sports protective eyewear for you and your family, and enjoy summer with more comfortable and clearer vision.

Our Hotel Heritage

With the exciting development of the Club Med Resort in Tinley Manor, I thought it would be interesting to look at the history and legend of another hotel that shaped the area's history and development landscape. In the 1940s, local businessman Charlie de Charmoy was looking for a site to build a hotel. With a newly developed beach access road through our family farm, Beverley Sugar Estate, (now Simbithi), Charlie identified a location which had previously been almost impossible to get to. With other crude roads through the farm linking up with what is now Thompson’s Bay and Willard Beach, Charlie decided to purchase a large section of the coastal property from Shaka’s Rock to Thompson’s Bay, thus beginning the establishment of the area as a holiday destination.

With no real landmarks or town names, Charlie devised a strong marketing campaign and point of difference to attract visitors. Like any marketer or developer, Charlie used poetic license, and it could be said, embellished the myth of King Shaka and an alleged practise of throwing his wives and detractors off a high rock to meet a watery end. Historical records are vague at best to support this practise and more importantly, the exact location, but it was all that Charlie needed to tell a story and sell his product. As a result, Shaka’s Rock was named and the landmark Shaka’s Rock Hotel was established. As an additional marketing exercise, he erected a bust of King Shaka and placed it on a plinth at the intersection of the old road (the R102) between Maidstone and Umhlali Village which was then the main road from Durban to Zululand. This was meant to attract passers-by. A bust still stands today where it was originally erected, and as a result the area is known as Shaka’s Head.

Historically, the areas of Shaka’s Rock and Salt Rock had been frequented by many local farming families who built simple wattle and daub beach homes from the late 1800s. This was of course long before the town

of Ballito was established in the early 1960s. Access was of course near impossible, and the ox-wagons provided the transport for families to get from inland to the coast. As the region became more popular, access a little easier, and the idea of holidaying at the coast for extended periods more in vogue, so did a few intrepid hoteliers spot the opportunity to develop their own destinations.

Three hotels, in particular, were developed in and around the 1940s. Shaka’s Rock Hotel, as previously mentioned, located in front of the current Salt Café with an impressive but perilous cliffside location, the Salt Rock Hotel, and the Umhlali Beach Hotel. Only the Salt Rock Hotel exists today, retaining much of its original charm and providing an authentic glimpse back in time. The Shaka’s Rock Hotel was knocked down to make way for a block of flats “Chaka’s Cove” in the mid-90s. I haven't been able to establish much history about the Umhlali Beach Hotel, but it was located in the vicinity of Hill Lane and the current Chaka’s Rock Chalets.

The local hospitality offering has certainly evolved and expanded over the past 80 years, but one thing is constant; the North Coast remains one of the most popular holiday destinations in South Africa and is set to become a global destination with the help of Club Med.
