IN-HOUSE JOURNALISTS
We’ve had long-running themes in our magazines which we use to guide our articles and stories. Our August editions have always celebrated the wonderful, inspiring, innovative and entrepreneurial women of the East Coast, and the team has produced a great edition that I am sure you will enjoy!
This edition got me thinking about the team I get to work with at FabMags, and I feel it would be remiss of me not to mention them.
If you didn’t know, FabMags publishes 14 print magazines and 10 digital magazines, each with varying numbers of editions per year. It’s a job we really love doing, but it also takes some delicate balancing (and juggling) to take ideas and concepts, discussed and debated around a table, to full-blown articles with photos and stories that make it onto the pages of our magazines. All of this is done
I appreciate this team deeply, and whilst they have worked so hard behind the scenes to celebrate the women in the stories of this edition, I would like to express my appreciation of them and the extraordinary work they do!
I hope you enjoy all of our stories and features. From putting a spotlight on the local female professionals who are achieving great things in their field to sharing the best braai accessories for the upcoming Heritage Day, we have a lovely mix of interesting articles to read through.
Till we chat again. Enjoy! God bless.

CELEBRATING THE DIVERSITY OF WOMEN
As we celebrate Women's Month, we pause to honour all women in their vibrant diversity. This tribute goes beyond acknowledging the significant milestones we've achieved and the battles we've fought. It's about embracing the remarkable strength in our diversity, recognising our inherent worth, and appreciating our uniqueness. Importantly, it's about accepting and honouring ourselves just as we are, acknowledging the day-to-day triumphs and challenges we face due to our individual traits.
Every woman carries a unique story, a narrative shaped by her experiences, challenges and distinct perceptions of the world. There are women of varied races, cultures, ages, and mental and physical abilities navigating life. There are women of different sexual orientations and socio-economic backgrounds. Each of these diversities adds to our shared experience and collective identity as women.
Neurodiversity is one such thread, representing variations in how the human brain functions and processes information. Women with neurodiverse conditions such as ADHD, autism, or dyslexia perceive and interact with the world in distinct ways. While these experiences can indeed foster creativity, innovative thinking, and out-of-the-box problem-solving skills, they also introduce challenges.
Women with neurodiversity may grapple with a range of different issues such as difficulty in managing time or social communication challenges. Despite these hurdles, they demonstrate incredible resilience and adaptability. Navigating the complexities of neurodiversity in a world that often
adheres to 'neurotypical' norms can be daunting, but it also speaks to the extraordinary strength and perseverance of these women.
It's essential to remember that neurodiversity, just like any other diversity, influences how you function — it is not a measure of your worth or your identity. It's an integral part of the wide, colourful spectrum that is womanhood.
This Women's Month, we reverberate a vital message to every woman: you are enough. Your value isn't dictated by societal norms, stigmas, or stereotypes, but by your authenticity and personal journey. Every woman brings to the table a unique set of strengths, talents, and perspectives.
The practice of self-acceptance and self-love is a cornerstone of this celebration. Remember who you are today, appreciate the path you've walked, and look forward to the woman you're continuously evolving into. Remember, each woman, in her diversity, enriches the world and adds to the collective strength of womanhood.
You are a vital part of this beautiful tapestry. You are, have always been, and always will be enough.

Mental Wellness
WHO IS NQOBILE MAPHUMULO?
I am a small-town girl operating in my calling as a clinical psychologist at my practice, uNqobile Psychologists. I am a warm and approachable person, passionate about spreading mental health awareness. I love what I do, and I believe in the power of its influence. I currently have a private practice in La Lucia and my areas of speciality include trauma, grief, relationships and mood disorders.
WHY PSYCHOLOGY?
Coming from a small village means that I grew up with very limited information about mental health, however, I could see the effects of it around me in my community. This resulted in me always wanting to understand the dynamics behind human behaviour. I use my profession to do exactly that. It gives me the platform to help guide people through their personal life dynamics and how these may affect their overall functioning.
HOW DID YOU END UP WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?
The journey to becoming a clinical psychologist included seven years of professional training, a lot of personal challenges, and growth. I have had the privilege of working in various sociocultural contexts, which has helped me gain a lot of experience and understanding of the different cultural and religious dynamics which influence people's interaction with their mental health.
WHAT IS IT LIKE WORKING AS A FEMALE IN THIS PROFESSION?
Being a female psychologist has come with a lot of challenges. There is a general misconception that we are more likely to become too emotionally invested in clients’ issues. I feel that being a female psychologist is actually a strength because females generally have a deeper level of compassion and relatability due to our nurturing nature. I pride myself in the response of my clients to my therapeutic interventions, and it continues to show me that we can all use the things that make
WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO WORK HARD IN YOUR FIELD, PUSHING BOUNDARIES AND MAKING STRIDES?
My own life journey and personal battles that I’ve conquered and continue to conquer. I am also highly inspired by each and every client who I’ve had the pleasure of assisting. I will always be an advocate for mental health and create more awareness. One of my greatest desires is to be able to spread education to less fortunate communities that are very affected by mental health matters but may not have the right knowledge, information and tools to help them take the necessary steps to get help.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE OTHER WOMEN STARTING OUT IN YOUR FIELD OF WORK?
I would honestly say go for it. There’s such great strength in women using their natural nurturing ability in our profession. We need more women in psychology. As much as the journey can be long and challenging, if you persevere, it can be the most rewarding experience of your life. I would encourage anyone wanting to pursue a career in psychology to do it and do it wholeheartedly.
Dedication
to Law
WHO IS SUBASHNEE MOODLEY?
I am the current Managing Partner and Chair of Livingston Leandy Incorporated, a firm whose history goes back more than 135 years. LLI is one of those pioneering firms in the “over 130 years in existence category” that has shattered the glass ceiling by appointing me as its first female MD in 2017.
Over the last few decades, the firm has innovated and transformed in terms of skillset, technology, and diversity in order to remain relevant. One of the major strategic imperatives was to ensure an environment that allows for diversity and gender parity.
WHY LAW?
I have always had a passion for law. The legal profession has so many constantly evolving tentacles, that one can never get bored in this profession. As with the rest of our team at LLI, our passion for law extends beyond our fee-generating practice. We always try to pull others along on the journey, not just within LLI, but outside of our organisation as well.
HOW DID YOU END UP WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?
As with all lawyers starting out, it's been a journey of hard work, perseverance, and
focused goals. Experience is indeed a great thing, and, at LLI, we are open to sharing our growth, experience and journey with aspirant attorneys and leaders. The firm’s partnership with various non-profit legal and empowerment organisations, as well as educational institutions, bears testimony to the value we place in giving back to those that deserve an opportunity!
WHAT IS IT LIKE WORKING AS A FEMALE LEADER IN THIS PROFESSION?
There will always be challenges but having the determination and confidence to navigate those challenges, with the support of a board and team, always yields success. The key is to continue to lead courageously, authentically, and honestly even during the toughest times. It is the challenges faced during these times that build resilience.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU AS A LEADER TO WORK HARD IN YOUR FIELD, PUSHING BOUNDARIES AND MAKING STRIDES?
Making a positive impact on the lives of our clients, employees and colleagues and empowering, mentoring and upskilling a new generation of lawyers, is what inspires us. It is important that leaders evolve with the ever-changing environment we find ourselves in. Each leadership style is unique. Provided you have the key ingredients of consistency, honesty, empathy, compassion, and the ability to listen, you learn and grow every day as a leader. Being kind and paying it forward is a key part of our mantra. Our practice is such that it paves the path to leadership roles and drives ambitious professionals within our organisation.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE OTHER WOMEN STARTING OUT IN YOUR FIELD OF WORK?
There are opportunities out there for women and for young people - it’s about being present in the moment, being ambitious and hungry for success, and confidently grabbing those opportunities by showcasing your skillset, the quality of your work, and the positive impact you have on your team and within the organisation.

Families Creating
WHO IS DR SKYE DE JONGH?
I am a mother who is passionate about helping women experience the wonder of motherhood. I am originally from Durban, the daughter of two doctors, and now live in Umhlanga with my husband and daughter Lily. For the past two years, I have been an integral part of the Vitalab KZN Fertility Clinic family, where I have helped numerous couples conceive and complete their families.
WHY REPRODUCTIVE MEDICINE?
I was first exposed to the world of fertility when I donated eggs to a family member with infertility during my university years. Unfortunately, that journey was unsuccessful, and I saw the devastating effect not being able to conceive had on that family. From that point on, I knew that it was my calling to help families who want a child to achieve that dream.
HOW DID YOU END UP WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?
My parents inspired me to go into medicine. I received my medical degree with cum laude honours from the University of Pretoria. I then completed my residency in obstetrics and gynaecology at Wits and recently obtained my second master’s degree in reproductive biotechnology from the University of Valencia in Spain.
WHAT IS IT LIKE WORKING AS A FEMALE IN THIS PROFESSION?
Reproductive medicine is a maledominated world, but slowly more women are stepping up and joining the field.
The benefit of being a female gynae is that many women are much more comfortable with a woman due to the intimate nature of the examinations.
I also feel privileged to have been able to experience pregnancy and sadly also a miscarriage. I feel that my experience helps me to better empathise with and guide my patients. It is tough being pregnant in my profession though. I often feel guilty and can see the pain it causes my patients who are still at the beginning of their fertility journey.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO WORK HARD IN YOUR FIELD, PUSHING BOUNDARIES AND MAKING STRIDES?
What inspires me every day is the joy that I bring to my patients the moment they get that positive pregnancy test, the moment they hear their baby’s heartbeat for the first time at seven weeks, and the moment their little baby waves at
them through the sonar at 10 weeks. I also love it when my patients return after I have operated on them or given them medication to fix their problem and they walk in with a huge smile on their face saying, “Thank you! I can’t tell you how much better I feel.” This is such a rewarding job and I feel so blessed to be doing what I love.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE OTHER WOMEN STARTING OUT IN YOUR FIELD OF WORK?
If I had to give young doctors any advice it would be: do what you love. I remember when I first told people that I wanted to specialise in obstetrics and gynaecology. They all told me I was mad. “You’ll never sleep!” they said. But I loved it and I decided that I would make it work for me. And that’s what I did. You can do anything you set your mind to.
Designand Align
WHO IS NIKITA LOPES RAJOO?
I am the co-founder of OMNI Architects alongside Om Moodley and I am the Design Architect for the majority of the projects. I try to focus on both the architectural aspects as well as delve into interior design where necessary. When I’m not in the office, I’m either at the gym or doing some outdoor activities.
WHY ARCHITECTURE?
To be very honest, I didn’t initially choose architecture - it somehow chose me. Architecture is such an amazing career as it is so intertwined with many aspects of our lives. It literally makes you learn a little bit about everything, and that is what drew me to it even more. I never get bored and I’m just constantly learning.
HOW DID YOU END UP WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?
I worked for six years in two amazing companies before I decided to take the leap to start my own practice. It was a rough start, and I had many challenges being such a young female in the industry, but the constant support from family, friends and clients made me push through. I can’t wait for more exciting milestones in the company. It really has grown from strength to strength.
WHAT IS IT LIKE WORKING AS A FEMALE IN THIS PROFESSION?
I cannot lie - it’s not a bed of roses. It definitely takes much more effort and a longer time to become “recognised” as a female architect in the community.
The biggest challenge for me personally (adding the factor that I am young) would be that some men generally get upset and defensive when I display an assertive disposition about a design element or a construction issue. However, work is work and it must be treated as such. I think that is something that still needs a lot of work in the community. What is an advantage is that architecture definitely requires a lot of multi-tasking - something females are very good at.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO WORK HARD IN YOUR FIELD, PUSHING BOUNDARIES AND MAKING STRIDES?
Other amazing, influential architects are the people who inspire me. I look at what they have done, admire it, and try to do better. I also challenge myself a lot with the type of projects I take on. Diversity is important to me. I am currently working on three schools (one of them specialising in special needs) and a police station and prison - which is very interesting. I try to never repeat specific design details I have done in my projects and always push the boundaries for new ideas. I absolutely love trying new things which, in many instances, makes the engineers and contractors crazy!
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE OTHER WOMEN STARTING OUT IN YOUR FIELD OF WORK?
Don’t underestimate yourself. People will definitely try to make you second-guess yourself. Don’t let them! Stay confident and keep smiling. Never give up! Please keep researching and learning from other influential architects. Lastly, never forget that the experiences in your life are what will make your designs stand out.
EMBRACING Holistic Care
A New Generation of Health and Wellness
In a fast-paced world where health concerns are complex, the pursuit of comprehensive, efficient and personalised healthcare has become increasingly vital. PearlsMED is an innovative medical facility that employs a holistic approach to not only treating ailments but also promoting overall well-being and prevention. The concept of the centre is the combined brainchild of the Ehlers family and Ruan Fourie.
At the heart of the centre lies a team of compassionate general medical practitioners: Dr Francois Ehlers, Dr Vincent Ehlers, Dr Rachel Shannon and Dr Le-Jean Ehlers - each with a different area of expertise. Together, with a deep understanding of the interconnections between various aspects of health, the team is able to cater to the needs of any patient requiring care.
The role of restoring function, enhancing mobility and alleviating pain is the domain of physiotherapists Ruan Fourie and Dominic Haussamer, who work closely alongside an expert team of allied practitioners.
Dr Devin Chetty and his team are responsible for transforming smiles and enhancing oral health. Whether it’s routine check-ups or complex restorative procedures, Dr Devin focuses on comfort and embraces the latest advancements in dental technology to nurture healthy smiles in the community.
PearlsMED houses a cutting-edge radiology department focused on breast and bone health. Equipped with x-rays, digital mammography and bone density scanning, this section aims to provide early detection and diagnosis of injuries, breast cancer and osteoporosis. With a team of skilled radiologists, the centre offers comprehensive screening programmes and follows up with targeted interventions, fostering a proactive approach to women's health and skeletal well-being.
Dr Rachel Shannon is a biochemist and medical doctor practicing as a General
Practitioner. She is also a mom to two little girls aged four and 20 months. Dr Rachel grew up in a family that focused on health promotion - her grandmother, a yoga teacher, opened the first health shop in South Africa in 1967.
She spent six years in the field of biochemistry, studying and developing animal models for type 2 diabetes. It was here that her love for hormones and medicine evolved. She was awarded a scholarship by the International Diabetes Federation in 2011 to present her master’s thesis at the World Diabetes Congress in Dubai. She was offered to pursue her PhD, but instead took a career turn into medicine. “I am passionate about empowering patients. In 2023, my mission is to offer my patients access to excellent healthcare,” she explains.
Dr Le-Jean Ehlers, the newest addition to PearlsMED, is a General Practitioner with a special interest in women’s health, medical
weight loss options and aesthetic medicine. She is passionate about empowering individuals to live their healthiest and most confident lives.
Dedicated to the well-being of her female patients, she offers an array of services to support their health. From annual medical check-ups and PAP smears to thorough breast examinations and IUD insertions, patients can trust her for proactive and personalised care. With a compassionate approach, she works closely with her patients and an in-house dietitian, providing tailored programmes and guidance to help achieve sustainable results.
Dr Le-Jean and her team also offer the innovative Allurion Gastric Balloon System placement and programme, further expanding the options available for weight-loss management. Furthermore, Dr Le-Jean has
developed a growing interest in medical aesthetics. Through modern techniques and technologies, she offers rejuvenating treatments aimed at restoring her patients’ confidence and radiance.
The Multi-Disciplinary Medical Centre unites diverse medical disciplines to provide comprehensive and efficient care for a wide array of health-related concerns. Focusing on personalisation, prevention, and advanced technology, it revolutionises the way we approach healthcare, empowering individuals to lead healthier lives and fostering a community characterised by vitality, wellbeing, and longevity.
Our mission is to offer patients access to excellent healthcare
Art With a Purpose The Story of La’ Muse
WORDS CRISTINA GOVENDERArt has the ability to evoke emotions. Using different colours, techniques and visuals, you can elicit feelings of happiness, contentment and sadness, or even convey an entire story. Creating art can also facilitate the release of these feelings, whether you sculpt, write, draw or splash paint onto a wall. Art therapy is using this creative process to improve well-being, by both observing and creating art, regardless of the medium.
Sonaly Hurdayal’s journey with art began at a young age. After finishing her first piece of art in primary school, she found that she really enjoyed the process of creation. Pretty soon, crayons weren’t giving her the desired effect she wanted to achieve, so she continued creating with paint instead. She soon became known as “the artist” by her classmates and teachers. For Sonaly, creating was a medium of escape and expression. “I found that I could share information and emotions better by drawing and painting rather than writing or speaking,” she shares.
As she got older, art also became an outlet for her feelings of anxiety. “Even though I didn’t know what it was at the time, I knew I felt a certain way, and painting how I felt helped me cope with those feelings,” she explains. Sonaly is an advocate for mental health awareness and shares her knowledge and experiences to help people know that they are not alone in their journeys. “When my gran was diagnosed with cancer, I researched what art therapy was and I spoke to her about it,” she shares. “It combines psychology and art, helping people express their feelings or influence them when they look at a certain piece of art.”
This research later guided her businesses and the projects she worked on. “I spent three months in King George Hospital painting murals with a team in their paediatric wards,” she recalled. “Watching those children watching us work and the effect the murals had on them was enough to convince me that this was what I wanted to do - help people with my art. I switched to studying part-time and started focusing on my passion.”
Sonaly wanted to give her art a purpose by teaching people to paint in order to help them express their emotions. This led to the birth of Pause ‘n Paint. She held her first class in 2017 in a restaurant and then continued with small classes until 2021 when she took up residence at Unity Performing Arts Studio in Gateway. “At Unity, I could embody my role better and be more comfortable with the environment. It was easier to teach there, too.” Attendees were completely focused on the class and left their daily worries outside, giving them an escape and an opportunity to release their stress in a healthy way.
Sonaly’s classes were so much more than just painting. She would teach the techniques but then leave it up to the individual to express themselves how they wanted to. From there, the brand and the work Sonaly was doing gained recognition and classes were selling out as fast as she could plan them. She still needed her own space where she could create a safe environment offering people a refuge to be freely creative.
In Greek mythology, the Muses worked together with the god Apollo to bring inspiration to artists. Ironically enough, Sonaly took inspiration from that to create the concept of La’ Muse. From the name, decor, themes and location, Sonaly’s goal is to inspire people when they walk in and leave feeling a little lighter.
As a female entrepreneur, she faced a lot of challenges where she was met with criticism and doubt. Being an artist who goes against the norm comes with its own set of challenges. Much of her work is personal to her. “I feel so passionate about this because I use my personal experiences and translate them into therapeutic painting classes,” Sonaly explains. “I want people to know that it’s okay to feel the way they do and that things will be okay, that there is more than one path in life.” This is what La’ Muse is for - breaking stereotypes and creating awareness around mental wellness.
Sonaly aims to leave behind a tangible legacy through her work. “The things I talk about are all things I wish someone had told me at a younger age,” she shares. She wants people to remember the work she did, the awareness she created, and how people benefited from her work. “Follow your passion,” Sonaly asserts. “Don’t settle. Yes, have a safety net, but don’t settle for less. Life is too short to settle.”

There is something so beautiful about thrifting (currently the fastest-growing sector in the fashion world!). At its core, it embodies a commitment to sustainability. The fashion industry, known for its environmental footprint, faces issues like excessive production and clothing ending up in landfills. Thrifting breathes new life into forgotten garments, extending their lifespan and reducing their carbon footprint. It also challenges the notion that fashion must be expensive, empowering people to experiment with styles while staying financially savvy.
Thrift stores offer a treasure trove of hidden gems, from designer labels to unique vintage pieces. The best part is that each second-hand item possesses its own charm, history, and character. By embracing thrifted finds, individuals create outfits that reflect their individuality and become a canvas for self-expression. This is why Thrift Therapy sparks conversations and showcases a discerning eye for eclectic tastes.
Meet the remarkable Rachael. With a background in public relations and corporate administration, Rachael has always had a passion for fashion. This love for fashion runs deep in her family, as her father was once the department head for textile and fashion design at Natal Tech and her brother worked with Levi's in both South Africa and the UK. Growing up in Durban, she never could have imagined that she would one day have her own small shop.
Thrift Therapy has become a haven for women seeking high-end international preloved clothing.
After experiencing the challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, Rachael found herself in need of a new direction. Recognising a gap in the market, she decided to open an upmarket ladies' thrift shop in Durban North. She finds joy in the process of curating diverse and high-quality items for her shop, ensuring that every customer can find something they love.
However, Thrift Therapy is more than just a shop, when Rachael chose the name for her business, she had a deeper vision in mind. Thrift Therapy is a sanctuary where women feel relaxed, comfortable, and completely themselves. They not only try on clothes but also open up about their lives while having fun. The shop fosters self-love, empowerment, and support, leaving customers with a sense of unity and positivity. The relationships Rachael has built with her customers and their love for the shopping experience are the most
fulfilling aspects of her business.
Thrift Therapy is situated in the beloved Peppermint Palace. While Rachael doesn't know much about its history, the house has stood as an icon in La Lucia since its construction in 1972. Its distinct feature is its peppermint-coloured exterior, with various shades being used over the years. According to local rumours, the sale agreement stipulates that the house must always remain a shade of peppermint green. Another fascinating rumour suggests that ships once used the house as a landmark, though its authenticity remains uncertain.
The four-storey house has seen multiple owners, and the area where her shop is located was originally a movie theatre as well as a fully mirrored bar, which serves as the perfect spot for photos! The old bar counter now serves as her shop counter. As told by Rachael, the house has doublevolume Italian Carrara marble floors at the main entrance, along with hanging and wall sconce chandeliers adorning the space. The bathrooms maintain their original 70s tiles, creating an eclectic mix of yellow,
Thriftventure (noun) - an exciting treasure hunt
green, blue, and pink. Undoubtedly, the most captivating feature of the Peppermint Palace is the breathtaking view of the ocean, overlooking the entire cityscape of Durban, including the Moses Mabhida Stadium and the Bluff.
As Rachael's journey continues, she aims to further grow Thrift Therapy and positively impact the lives of women. With her eye for fashion and commitment to empowering women, she has created a haven where fashion, sustainability, and personal growth intersect. Visit Thrift Therapy to find your treasure and bring joy to your wardrobe!

Creative & Innovative
WORDS CRISTINA GOVENDERThe word “design” can be used as a noun and a verb. It is the plan or concept for a project, or it refers to the actual process of creating this plan. It takes great talent and creativity to conjure up original concepts and then bring them to life. We dive into the world of design and meet the incredible local women behind the brands.
Jessica Shuttleworth is a local fashion and textile designer based in Durban. Her brand is minimalistic, timeless and Japanese-inspired, specialising in ladies’ apparel. “My garments show off oversized draping, boxy shaping and asymmetrical styling,” she explains. Her design process has been inspired by her trips to the East, incorporating the flowy yet edgy characteristics found in the street style culture of the area. “I focus on three elements – unique designs, comfort and quality fabrics as well as fine details in the construction of my garments,” Jessica elaborates.
“Instead of chasing trends, I focus on pieces that will last for years to come,” she says. Her garments allow for layered wearing. You can dress them up or down depending on the season and occasion. She currently stocks moki.store in Umhlanga with an exclusive collab range that highlights slow fashion. This range is characterised by the slogan: “Buy less, choose well, anti-trends and discourage fast fashion.” You can also find Jessica’s moki.store collection online and her Instagram @jessicashuttleworth_designer
Meet Bianca Harvey, a seasoned interior designer from Umhlanga Rocks. With her father in the kitchen design industry and mother in the interior design industry, her career choice was meant to be. “As a child, I would sit alongside my mother as she worked on elite residential design schemes, and thus began a passion that couldn’t be tamed.” Although she was encouraged to pursue a career in IT, she followed her passion and insisted on making a career in design.
Bianca started her own practice in 2016, focusing on niche interior design projects. “I gathered the courage and started my own showroom and employed a team of intrepid designers,” she explains. This is the current HDF Group Pty Ltd that focuses on major interior design projects ranging from luxury residential and hospitality to commercial and corporate interior design spaces throughout South Africa. Visit her website www.hdfgroup.co.za to check out her latest projects!
We hop from organising your spaces to organising your time. Jayne Frew, born and bred in the 031, designs and creates planners to help simplify your life. “I've been working in the design industry for over two decades with a passion for textiles,” she shares.
Having two energetic boys, along with managing a home and working full-time, Jayne’s life was busy, full, and often stressful, “To simplify our day-to-day living, I designed a practical, aesthetically pleasing, wipeable and magnetic monthly planner, which not only helped us stay organised but also brought a calmness to my world.”
Jelly Pickle Paintings began in 2017, but the brand changed its course with the introduction of the planner range in 2020. Her range caters to diverse preferences and styles, offering a variety of options. Whether it's family organisers, daily, weekly, or monthly planners, reward charts, weekly meal planners, student planners, or teachers' lesson planners, each product is wipeable, magnetic and comes with a slimline whiteboard marker. You can easily place it on the fridge or pin it to a corkboard.
“I personally design and package every item in the range, and they are manufactured locally using high-quality materials to ensure durability, functionality, and longevity.” They also help to create a “Pinterest style” space with on-trend designs so the planners look pretty and help you to stay on track with your tasks! Head on to @jellypicklepaintings on Instagram to see her awesome products.
Lastly, we have Welicia Canning from Leesha Fine Jewellery. She designs and brings to life beautifully made solid gold jewellery at affordable prices. “Spotting a gap during COVID in 2019, I tapped into the online market and have managed to gain over 20 000 followers on Instagram!”
Based in Umhlanga, her workshop is a family-owned business and has been around for over 45 years, currently supplying around 400 jewellery stores across SA. “We are a “one-stop shop” which means we supply our own diamonds (GIA and EGL certified) and all precious metals - your pieces never leave the workshop!” she says. Welicia always loved doing things differently and
wanted to incorporate this mindset into her jewellery business. She wondered why traditional jewellery is so expensive and looked for a way she could allow more people to feel the luxury of owning real gold and diamonds. Her fashion, design and sales background facilitated the unconventional twist on the traditional jewellery market. “If a woman feels good on the outside, it gives her confidence on the inside.” Find your dream jewellery on Instagram @leeshafinejewellery

SandBar is the perfect restaurant to slow down and relax while enjoying one of their signature cocktails. Stepping onto their ‘Corona Veranda’, you are greeted by the friendly and welcoming crew and owners, L and D. “We want you to leave feeling relaxed and happy. We look at the experience holistically and we take satisfaction seriously,” says L. Not only do the staff contribute to the lively atmosphere of the restaurant, but they really pay attention to the little details when it comes to each individual’s taste.
When it comes to food, SandBar doesn’t compromise on quality, taste or presentation. They have a vast menu, including tapas, mains and desserts, that will satisfy any foodie. And, you can’t forget about their house speciality ribs!
Available in 400 and 600 grams, their pork loin ribs are slowcooked for two hours before being marinated for 24 hours. They are then basted and flame-grilled to perfection. We had to keep the napkins close by while enjoying those ribs!
SandBar’s sushi selection is expansive including favourites like rainbow rolls, prawn avalanches and salmon roses. Being an office of sushi-lovers, their sushi platters are perfect for sharing, and we got creative and made our own. Then, we got to end things off with a decadent dessert and let the festive atmosphere and lively music sweep us into the evening.
SandBar also hosts local DJs performing there while you sip on a refreshing cocktail and enjoy the ocean views. Be sure to check their social media to find out more about their events or specials.
Celebrating its 10th anniversary, SandBar Restaurant and Cocktail Bar has become a landmark of Umdloti, overcoming various hurdles over the years. It is still the place where both locals and visitors can meet and enjoy brilliant service, refreshing cocktails and great food.

THROUGH THE AGES Skincare
WORDS JORDYN TROLLIPWith self-proclaimed dermatologists around every corner on Instagram and TikTok, we thought it was time to get the facts straight by chatting with a real professional about what exactly we should be putting onto our skin, from our 20s to our 50s and beyond.
DR MAUREEN ALLEM
Founder and medical director of Skin Renewal, Dr Maureen Allem has years of experience in aesthetic and holistic medicine. With an extensive knowledge of skincare and antiageing techniques, she helped us gather all you need to know about taking care of your skin throughout your life.
YOUR 20S: PROTECT AND MAINTAIN
Although your skin may be plump and youthful, Dr Maureen says that it’s essential to take care of what you have. Firstly, SPF is your best friend to prevent sun damage. Make sure you apply sunscreen in the morning and reapply at midday. “Along with a cleanser, a daily moisturiser is of the utmost importance to ensure the longevity of your skin’s barrier, the outermost surface of your skin that protects it from the environment.”
She suggests adding “actives” to your routine. Actives are ingredients designed to help with a particular skin concern, which can be found in various products such as serums and creams. “Include daytime actives, such as a vitamin C serum, to protect your skin against the effects of pollution, the sun and the environment. Nighttime actives that maintain excellent hydration are also a great choice, such as a serum with hyaluronic acid.” If you want to really maintain what you have and prevent damage, a monthly facial that supports hydration and exfoliates the skin is also very beneficial.
YOUR 30S: PREJUVENATION
This age marks the start of doing what you can to prevent sagging, wrinkles and fine lines. Dr Maureen explains, “Start honing in on the areas hinting that they may be ‘problem areas’, such as around your
eyes, on the forehead, skin texture, dehydration lines, and possibly even uneven skin tone.”
Another daytime active you can introduce is AHA (alpha hydroxy acid), an exfoliant that smooths the skin, helps with hyperpigmentation, and reduces the appearance of fine lines and acne scars.
Nighttime actives become even more important in your 30s. “Start enhancing your skin’s integrity with collagen serums, peptides or growth factors (which stimulate cell production), and a mild retinol,” our expert adds. You may have heard ‘retinol’ before, but what does it do? Also known as vitamin A, retinol increases cell production, unclogs pores, exfoliates the skin, and increases collagen production, reducing wrinkles and keeping your skin plump. You can find this active in night creams and serums.
As your skin may become drier as you age, take extra care when choosing a moisturiser. “The use of a moisturiser that will protect the skin’s barrier and prevent moisture loss is ideal for the morning. It may also be a good idea to include anti-oxidants in your daytime moisturiser, like vitamins C and E. Focus on hydration when it comes
to a nighttime moisturiser, containing hyaluronic acid, ceramides (a molecule that strengthens your skin barrier) and peptides.”
You may also want to amp up your inclinic treatments. Dr Maureen suggests a monthly targeted facial that focuses on your potential problem areas, combined with treatments such as laser toning, peels, transdermal mesotherapy (active ingredients administered without the use of needles), Dermapen (micro-needling facial), and microdermabrasion (gently removing the top layer of skin to fade scars). If interested, this is also the age to start with Botox, fillers and biostimulators.
YOUR
40S: CORRECTION
“It’s now time to start focusing on the areas that show signs of ageing - lines, wrinkles, the start of volume loss and pigmentation. In some cases, it may be the starting signs of melasma (brown or dark patches
or spots that are triggered by hormonal changes), dilated pores and skin sagging,” says Dr Maureen. She advises protecting your skin in the morning with products that contain powerful anti-oxidants such as ferulic acid. Dr Maureen also suggests using a daytime moisturiser with antiglycation actives (anti-oxidants that prevent cross-hatched lines and wrinkles).
In terms of your nighttime routine, you should continue using products that contain peptides or growth factors and introduce a stronger retinol serum (used every third night, building up to every second night, if needed) to rebuild your skin by promoting cell turnover.
For sagging skin, there are treatments available to help, such as radiofrequency, Rf Needling and Nd:YAG which uses a 1064nm wavelength that is able to penetrate deep into the skin tissue.
YOUR 50S AND BEYOND: AGE CORRECTION
Stick your 40s skincare routine, using moisturisers and actives that include those powerful protective, skin-building and repairing ingredients.
To go the extra mile, Dr Maureen also recommends fractional fusion treatments which target the skin’s surface and deeper layers of the skin for a smoother, fresher, younger-looking appearance. Along with Botox and fillers, some may also go for ‘threads’ - temporary sutures used to produce a subtle but visible "lift" in the skin. By your 50s, you have probably gained lots of great stories, memories and perhaps a few wrinkles along the way, which is completely natural. No matter your age, caring for your skin is vital, but so is feeling confident in the skin you’re in!

A PASSION FOR NARRATIVES
WORDS ASHLING MCCARTHY
Storytelling has been part of my life since I was a child. My father loved to tell us bedtime stories about his childhood growing up in Ireland. They were about the secret lives of fairies and leprechauns and the antics of the bunnies and birds he’d come across while walking to school.
I’ve always been creative. I started my career as a graphic designer and then became a craft developer in rural Zululand. It was through this latter experience that I went on to study anthropology and eventually start a non-profit, I Learn to Live
– Ngifundela Ukuphila. Our mission is to raise up loving, creative, problem-solving, community-changing children and youth by providing them with skills to thrive in life and exposing them to education programmes, experiences, and advice to develop these skills.
I’d had some very unique experiences through my work and wanted to share those stories as my outlook on life had fundamentally shifted through meeting and living with people outside of my culture. Then, as a family, we experienced the horrors of rhino poaching at a game
reserve, and I knew that these stories needed to be told as well. I really believe that creativity, regardless of the medium, can encourage conversations around social change.
Down at Jika Jika Tavern and The Leopard in the Lala are part of my wildlife crime series, The Poacher’s Moon Crime Series. My intention is to use the freedom that fiction allows to explore the challenging and complex topic of wildlife crime. The diverse cast of characters allows for a better understanding of why people become involved in what truly is a terrible act – the decimation of beautiful creatures to the point of extinction.
I am in the early stages of planning the third book in The Poacher’s Moon Crime Series (title unknown!). I have a WhatsApp group with myself and am constantly sending myself notes, articles, videos, and all manner of inspiration that will help develop the plot and characters. What I have most enjoyed about writing a series is that the characters have become friends – I think about them often and am very invested in who they are and their challenges, love lives, and friendships. I think a great deal about what it means to be a South African author, and the importance of telling stories that are South African, especially the stories of local women.

The Hussar Grill Classic Grillroom Experience
WORDS JORDYN TROLLIPWarm, intimate, nostalgicthese are a few words that came to mind when we entered The Hussar Grill, a timeless steakhouse with an award-winning menu. We were greeted by passionate General Manager Hyno, who shared the ins and outs of the restaurant, from their efficient kitchen to the private dining room, ideal for events. He also delved into the history of Hussar. Every decor choice has a unique story, such as the boxes of wine which are a nod to the wine-loving owners of one of the first The Hussar Grill restaurants. Here, keeping traditions alive is vital.
With a bottle of The Hussar Grill 50th Red (a red blend created to celebrate the brand’s 50th anniversary), we tucked into our starters. Hyno spoke highly of their chicken livers, and we were not disappointed. Made with Old Brown sherry, cream and peri-peri, the sauce was heavenly with the toasted bread - a perfect combination of creamy and spicy. Along with the flavourful Dutch delicacy “bitterballen” (béchamel sauce with beef jus and bits, then crumbed and deep-fried), we
ventured out of our comfort zones and tried their steak tartare. The strong flavours of each element came together beautifully when eaten together, and we kept coming back for more bites.
The Hussar Grill is known for sourcing the best quality meat and maturing it themselves for perfect results. This attention to detail shone through in our main courses. Stuffed with smoked oysters and Cheddar cheese and topped with a wholegrain mustard sauce, the Hussar Carpetbagger was a moreish dish made with buttery soft fillet. On the seafood side, we went for the kingklip thermidor with prawns. The fish melted in our mouths, covered by a delicious garlic sauce, and superbly complemented by the prawns. Cooked to perfection with sublime marbling, their ribeye topped with a bold bone marrowinfused compound butter was mouth-watering, served with its own delicious marrow bone.
The Hussar Grill’s “wild card” dishes include their selection of wild meat like kudu, springbok and gemsbok. We were treated to a 250-gram gemsbok steak served with a divine
herb sauce infused with apricots, which added a lovely sweetness to the top-quality meat. We also dug into a few classic side dishes, including well-seasoned roasted vegetables, creamy mashed potatoes, cheesy gratinated corn and garlic potatoes.
To end off the night, we tried their velvety smooth baked cheesecake and Death by Chocolate, a chocolatey brownie with biscuit crumble, brûléed orange and vanilla ice cream - what a heavenly mix of textures! Their crème brûlée definitely stole the show. A crack of the caramelised sugar top revealed a scrumptious silky custard. As we left The Hussar Grill, I was already planning my next visit. With popular favourites and bold dishes on their menu, this restaurant is an excellent choice for date night, special events or just to treat yourself to a phenomenal meal.
Take Charge of Your Menopause Journey
Menopause is part of every woman's life, but many suffer through it due to fear of seemingly high risks associated with hormone replacement therapy (HRT). We now know that there was a lot of media misrepresentation and misinterpretation of data about the risks of HRT.
During both peri- and menopause, a range of symptoms can occur, the severity of which varies. These include night sweats, mood changes, fatigue and insomnia, poor concentration and brain fog, low libido, joint pain, vaginal and urinary symptoms, as well as hair and skin changes. These symptoms arise due to a decline in oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone. The most effective way to treat this is to replace and supply your body with these hormones.
What Are the Risks of HRT?
The risk, albeit small, depends on the type of HRT, the duration used, and individual genetic and lifestyle factors.
Although there is a small increased risk of developing breast cancer, using HRT for five years contributes less than one additional case of breast cancer per 1000 women. This is a significantly lower risk than drinking three glasses of alcohol per week. There is also a slightly increased risk of blood clots or liver disease if taking oestrogen in tablet form, however, using HRT through the skin as a gel or patch does not have these risks.
What Are the Benefits of HRT?
Advancements in HRT formulations have made it much safer. Using HRT will improve your symptoms possibly to the extent of feeling normal again and the impact on your quality of life can be significant. Oestrogen protects bone health from developing osteoporosis, the heart against cardiovascular disease and the brain from vascular dementia. Your risk of developing other metabolic diseases like type two diabetes can also reduce.
Oestrogen is important for many aspects of our health and the limited risks can be discussed with your doctor to decide on its long-term use, especially if mammograms and regular health checks are done.
Advancements in medicine and research have resulted in NICE (The National Institute for Care Excellence in the UK) creating menopause guidelines and recommendations that are continuously
updated based on the latest evidence. Some noteworthy points include:
1. Blood tests should not routinely be used to diagnose menopause. It is diagnosed on symptoms and history.
2. HRT should be offered as first-line therapy for vasomotor symptoms and for low mood.
3. Antidepressants should thus NOT be routinely offered.
4. Vaginal oestrogen is extremely safe and should be offered for all women with urogenital symptoms.
5. Women should be supported in their decision on when to stop HRT. Based on an individualised risk/benefit discussion with your care provider, it can be reasonable to continue HRT lifelong.
My hope for all women is access to good care that is evidence-based and that resources can be used to open the door of communication and collaboration with your healthcare provider.
RACHEL is a biochemist and general practitioner at PearlsMed, Umhlanga. Her focus is on diabetes, women’s health and pediatrics.

BUDGETFRIENDLY HOME MAINTENANCE
WORDS GRANT GAVIN
With interest rates rising, consumers are faced with increased financial commitments across all asset classes. Whilst this impacts your monthly budget, homeowners cannot afford to let the maintenance of their home deteriorate during this time, as this will affect the value of the property, should you be required to sell.
Maintaining your home doesn't have to break the bank. Here are some cost-effective tips to help you keep your home in good condition while being mindful of your budget:
1. Regular Cleaning and Organisation: Keeping your home clean and well-organised is one of the most cost-effective ways to maintain its condition. Regularly dusting, vacuuming and mopping floors, wiping down surfaces, and decluttering can prevent dirt, dust, and debris from causing damage over time.
2. Conduct Routine Inspections: Performing regular inspections allows you to identify and address any maintenance issues early on, preventing them from becoming more significant and costly problems. Check for leaks, cracks, or signs of damage in areas like the roof, plumbing, foundation, and electrical systems. Timely repairs can save you money in the long run.
3. DIY Repairs: Many minor repairs around the house can be tackled as do-it-yourself projects, saving you money on professional services. Learn basic repair skills through online tutorials, books, or workshops, and take on tasks like replacing light bulbs, patching small holes, or paint touch-ups.
4. Garden Maintenance: Maintaining your garden doesn't have to be costly.
www.grantgavin.com
Take on landscaping tasks yourself, such as mowing the lawn, pruning bushes, and weeding. Consider starting a compost pile to recycle organic waste and use it as a natural fertiliser for your garden. Proper lawn care and landscaping contribute to the overall curb appeal and value of your home.
5. Energy Efficiency Measures: Improving energy efficiency not only reduces your environmental impact but can also lead to long-term cost savings. Replace traditional light bulbs with energy-efficient LED bulbs, seal air leaks, use programmable thermostats, and install low-flow showerheads to reduce utility bills and increase your home's energy efficiency.
6. Plan for Seasonal Maintenance: Prepare your home for each season to prevent weather-related damage. Clean and inspect gutters before the rainy season, seal gaps around windows and doors to keep drafts out during winter, and trim trees before stormy seasons to prevent branches from causing damage.
7. Research and Compare Prices : When purchasing materials or hiring professionals for home maintenance and repairs, take the time to research and compare prices. Obtain multiple quotes, read reviews, and ask for recommendations to ensure you're getting the best value for your money.
By implementing these cost-effective tips, you can maintain your home's condition without straining your budget. Consistent upkeep and preventative measures will help you avoid costly repairs and preserve the value of your property.
