Ilike Ken Blanchard’s quote which says, “Feedback is the breakfast of champions.” It definitely rings true for us here at FabMags, and for me as the editor of our various magazines, I couldn't agree more. I know I’ve shared that in every edition we strive to bring you stories, articles, and features that not only entertain and inform you but also, whenever and however we can, inspire and motivate you.
Whilst the team tries to get out of the office and connect as often as we can, we still find ourselves regularly working from behind our desks, crafting our stories and designing our pages with the belief that they’ll resonate with you, our valued readers. But when we get feedback, we get really excited, and that's why receiving feedback from you is so valuable and insightful.
Just the other day, we had a meeting at our offices, and I asked one of the people in the meeting if they read our magazines and what they enjoyed about them. The feedback blew
This message was more than just feedback; it reminded us all why we do what we do. For us, this message was deeply affirmational. It reaffirmed our passion to pull together great local content that not only entertains our readers but, if and when possible, fuels curiosity and passion as well. It confirms that the local stories we feature, the interviews we do, and the information we share have a real impact. Feedback like this reminds us that our stories make a difference.
So, dear readers, as we continue to tell stories about the special people, places and developments on the East Coast, I invite you to keep sharing your thoughts with us. Whether it's a word of praise, a suggestion for improvement, or a personal story of how our magazine has touched your life, feedback like that of Stallin’s above really does put wind in our sails.
Lastly, to the edition in hand. I hope you enjoy what is our best October edition ever! Well done once again to the Fabmags team and a sincere thank you to all our advertising partners.

IT’S TIME TO COMMIT
WORDS GRANT GAVIN
Ionce saw a cartoon meme that really caught my attention. A father was chatting to his son, explaining the difference between being interested in success at school versus being committed to success at school. “Take your breakfast as an example, my boy,” the father said. “On your plate you've got two eggs and some bacon. The chicken had an interest in your breakfast, but the pig… well, the pig was committed.”
When it comes to your success, whether it be in business, your diet, your fitness regime or your relationship, are you the chicken or are you the pig? Are you interested in your success, or are you committed?
If you're merely interested in something, you will do what's convenient. You'll do what is easy and comfortable and you will fool yourself into believing that this is going to be enough. You will do the bare minimum in terms of learning new skills, you will do just enough to convince yourself you’ve had a busy day, and you will be constantly watching others achieve the results that you want.
“The quality of a person's life is in direct proportion to their commitment to excellence, regardless of their chosen field of endeavour.” - Vince
LombardiWhen you're committed to something, you will do whatever it takes to achieve the results that you want. You won't make excuses or find reasons to avoid the difficult actions required. You are an aggressive learner, constantly challenging yourself to be better and to improve your knowledge and skills.
The goal is not to do your best because
your best is often linked to your comfort zone. In other words, you do your best within the parameters you have set for yourself. There are a specific set of disciplines required of you in your particular field, that if applied diligently and consistently over time, will lead to your success.
Your outcomes in life are the results of the choice you make. You're never going to fulfill your potential if you remain interested. Here are three tips to help you shift into a space of commitment:
• Say it out loud. Set a brave goal, and then tell somebody about your goal. If you keep it to yourself, it's too easy to hide when times get tough. Be brave. Let the world hold you accountable.
• Pay for something. Put some skin in the game. Sign up for a training course, hire a coach, or invest in something that is going to help you get closer to your goal. Once you pay for something, you are committed.
• Stick at it for at least a month. Commit to your new routine of disciplined activities for a minimum of a month. Don't expect results during this time either - rather focus on building the new habits, disciplines and consistencies in your daily activities.
The results will come once you've formed the new habits and new way of thinking, I guarantee you.

On the Couch With Architectural Visionaries
Tyrone Reardon from Metropole Architects
TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR ARCHITECTURAL FIRM.
I am the Principal Architect and a director of Metropole Architects. Our practice was founded in 1997, and we have completed projects, and have others currently underway, in KZN, Gauteng and Western Cape, as well as internationally in countries such as Israel, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and Rwanda. My intent is to craft and tailor-make bespoke buildings and interiors to accommodate all the requirements, including lifestyle considerations, based on the specific individual needs and aspirations of my clients.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR ARCHITECTURAL AESTHETIC OR DESIGN PHILOSOPHY?
I believe that good architecture is not exclusively engineering or art, but the
synthesis of both acting in concert with one another. In the words of Constantin Brancusi, “Architecture is inhabited sculpture.” Factors such as climate, technology and culture are arguably the major driving forces that shape our built environment. However, the users of architecture should be the ultimate priority, and good architectural design considers and addresses the holistic needs of humanity, corporately and individually.
HOW WOULD YOU DIFFERENTIATE YOUR AESTHETIC AND DESIGN FROM OTHERS?
Our perspective is that pragmatism alone is not enough and that visionary ideas and ventures by proactive “dreamers” are absolutely vital and necessary to positively shape the future. I am always in pursuit of excellence and strive to innovate and explore ideas that are intuitive, inventive, evocative and exciting.
HOW DO YOU ENSURE THAT YOUR AESTHETIC DESIGNS ARE BOTH INNOVATIVE AND PRACTICAL FOR THE PEOPLE WHO WILL USE THE SPACES?
Human beings have both basic physiological and practical needs as well as psychological and emotional needs. Architecture has to consider and respond to all the needs of the people who interact and inhabit it. Every environmental stimulus triggers an emotional and sometimes physiological response. Architects are responsible for creating an environment that facilitates and ideally elevates all aspects of human life.

Nash Lakraj from Stil Design Architectural
TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR ARCHITECTURAL FIRM.
I'm a registered Senior Architectural Technologist with SACAP. I graduated in 1999 from Technikon Natal with a National Diploma in Architectural Technology. I then worked in the industry for about 11 years, before I ventured into private practice in 2010 where STIL Design Architectural was formed.
Our strength comes from our diverse experience and multi-disciplinary approach. We've worked on various projects, including urban development, commercial and retail ventures, high-rise buildings, resorts, apartments, educational campuses, historic building restoration, service stations, healthcare facilities, laboratories, airports, hotels, social housing and town planning.
At SDA, we have top-notch equipment to create drawings, reports and specifications, always striving for design excellence. Our motto is simple: plan, design, enable.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR ARCHITECTURAL AESTHETIC OR DESIGN PHILOSOPHY?
We start designing by analysing the client's requirements. Our first tools are research, analysis and evaluation. While we stay updated on global architectural and construction trends, we also consider local conditions and culture. Our approach focuses on balanced urban redevelopment, preserving historical character while meeting new requirements. Our design guidelines result from in-depth studies in areas like demographics, transportation, economics, education and more.
HOW WOULD YOU DIFFERENTIATE YOUR AESTHETIC AND DESIGN FROM OTHERS?
I am proud that there is no Stil Design “design style” – instead, our designs are unique yet variable, responding to our client's complex and challenging requirements. I am committed to delivering excellence in sustainable design and exceeding my clients' expectations.
WHAT FACTORS DO YOU CONSIDER WHEN BLENDING FUNCTIONALITY WITH AESTHETICS IN YOUR DESIGNS?
Blending these elements seamlessly can result in a structure that is not only useful and efficient but also evokes emotion and resonates with its intended audience. I consider factors including the purpose of the structure, cultural context, material selection, sustainability, spatial, experience, economic factors, integration with the environment, durability and maintenance, flexibility, technological integration, safety and practicality.
Blending functionality with aesthetics in architecture is as much an art as a science. The iconic structures often balance harmoniously, evoking admiration for their beauty and thoughtful and purposeful design.
The Hirsch FAMILY
The People Behind the Brand
WORDS JORDYN TROLLIPBuilding a business from the ground up takes hard work, dedication and passion. No one knows this more than the Hirsch family. Most are familiar with the impressive stores sporting the blue “HIRSCH’S HOMESTORE”, but have you met the local faces behind this beloved brand? Born in Johannesburg, Allan Hirsch and his family moved down to the KwaZulu-Natal
coast, where he grew up. In fact, Allan was one of the first pupils to attend Umhlali Primary School on the North Coast. “I didn’t shine in school. After struggling through high school with very poor grades, I decided to become an apprentice appliance technician,” he explains. He worked with Fuchsware for five years, learning everything about refrigerator repair. In his early 20s, Allan met Margaret at a party,
and their whole lives changed. Margaret was born in Zimbabwe, but her parents were from KZN. After her father died when she was only 11 years old, her family moved back to their home province and ended up in Pietermaritzburg where she attended Russell Girls High. After school, she became a shorthand typist. A few years after meeting, the couple married, despite some parental disapproval!
“Margaret insisted that I see an educational psychologist, who told me that I wasn’t ‘stupid’ at school - I was dyslexic. It was an incredible relief to me and was a great boost to my self-esteem,” says Allan. With this newfound confidence, they decided to go on their own and start their own business, Hirsch’s.
“We set up our first shop 44 years ago in a showroom, no bigger than a bathroom, on Umhlanga Rocks Drive. We sold stoves and fridges while Allan did repairs in the area. When the microwave came on the market, we saw its potential and started cookery demonstrations to show the public what an amazing time-saving device it was. They loved it! They also loved the fact that we went out of our way to make their lives easier. The name ‘Hirsch’ became synonymous with service excellence,” says the couple. The family legacy continued when, in the early years of Hirsch’s, Richard and Luci were born. “I literally grew up in the business,” says Richard. “Some of my earliest memories are of me in the back of my dad's blue bakkie
as he went to customers' homes to repair their appliances. I did my homework in the store every day. It may seem challenging, but not to me. I absolutely adore my parents and sister!”
Although it was tough balancing family life and a successful small-business-turnedbrand, the Hirsch family stayed very close throughout the journey. They enjoyed (and still enjoy) lots of Sunday lunches together and are in constant communication with each other. As the business grew even more, so did the family. Luci and Richard both got married and made Allan and Margaret proud grandparents to five grandsons!
After just over four decades, Hirsch’s Homestore is still run by the family - Allan as Chairman, Margaret as Executive Director, and Luci as Brand Manager and the Voice of Hirsch’s. Richard has worn many hats. “I was a Store Manager and then took over as the KZN Regional Manager. My mom had always been the Managing Director, but one day she
announced that she would like me to take that position. As the company has grown, my parents took on the roles as of executive director and chairman, and I took over as CEO,” explains Richard. “I thoroughly enjoy being involved in the business, especially in the appliance industry. To me, it’s the best job in the world.”
Today, the Hirsch family are still Umhlanga locals. Allan and Margaret love to spend time with their grandsons and watch them play sports. Allan won the Standard Bank KZN Businessman of the Year Award in 2021, and Margaret, who has won over 30 business awards, received her MBA at 70 years old and is busy doing her PhD! Luci and Richard both love entertaining and cooking and are kept on their toes by their sons.
With even more expansion on the way, the Hirschs are proud of what they have achieved thus far, all based on their values of honesty, integrity and loyalty. “Our highlight is getting to work with our family every single day.”

EXPLORE Global Opportunities
There are some amazing countries out there to relocate to or invest in, and these companies are here to help you explore all the options available.
Sable International has helped hundreds of families with dual citizenship and residency through investment and boasts a 100% application success rate. As an independent firm, they conduct thorough due diligence on the programmes offered to clients and work with only the most trusted, on-the-ground partners. Greece, Malta and the USA are a few of the countries that offer attractive options.
Among the rich history, delicious cuisine and beautiful views, there are plenty of reasons to love Greece. The Golden Visa grants a long-term residence permit that will remain valid as long as you maintain
ownership of a qualifying property in Greece. Children can be included in your application, as well as non-dependant parents.
While the Mediterranean island of Malta offers both citizenship and permanent residency programmes, the Permanent Residence Programme has the benefit of having no age cap on financially dependent, unmarried children. You can also include parents and grandparents who are fully financially dependent on the main applicant. This island is an Englishspeaking state, with a warm climate to accommodate your transition to another country.
Known for its entertainment, technological advancements and educational opportunities, the USA is a country of freedom and possibilities. The EB-5 is currently the quickest way to obtain a US green card – which allows you almost all of the same benefits as a US citizen.
You may include dependent children enrolled in full-time education on your application. This is a better option for young families as, once your child is 21, they are considered an adult and cannot be included.
You can talk to the Sable International team at the Global Citizenship and Emigration Expo on 31 October or 1 November at The Oyster Box to find out more.

A COLLABORATIVE DECOR & DESIGN TEAM
& A Sweet Experience
Ican’t be the only one who gets a little jealous while scrolling through the endless scenes of European holidays all over my Instagram Explore page. If, like me, you didn’t summer in Paris or Amsterdam, there’s a new cafe now open in The Pearls Mall that offers a similar experience. Welcome to the quaint Milk & Cookies…
After spending many vacations strolling the streets of European cities, the owners of Milk & Cookies were inspired by their travels and the cute cafes they visited. They wanted to recreate this experience in their own hometown and banded together to open a truly aesthetic cafe with a welcoming atmosphere and
a unique food and drink offering. We were invited to have a taste of what Milk & Cookies is all about, and it was definitely a sweet treat.
Milk & Cookies is hard to miss, with enchanting pink panelling framing the front door. Once you step inside, you’re transported to a French patisserie decorated in pink and sage, with soft, plush chairs, colourful wallpaper and ambient lighting. “We wanted to create a calming, inviting space, so we went with pastel colours,” says the founders.
This is important as Milk & Cookies is actually a pro-CBD cafe, where you have the option to make any of their beverages CBD-infused. “This is an aesthetically pleasing environment where you can gain the health benefits of CBD, such as reduced stress and better sleep. We even sell CBD-infused Nespresso coffee pods!”
Speaking of coffee, the cafe has a wide range of beverages to enjoy. Alongside
the usual lattes and cappuccinos (expertly made by Pearl, their head barista), chocolate lovers are in for a treat with their pink hot chocolate and Lindt hot chocolate (you drop in a Lindt milk chocolate truffle for that extra rich taste!). Various imported and local teas also feature on their menu, including distinct flavours such as cinnamon and ginger and hibiscus and rose.
Sweet and savoury, Milk & Cookies covers all tastes and textures. Their mini
chicken and spinach and feta quiches are the perfect delicious snack, while the wraps and open sandwiches are ideal lunch choices. We tried their tasty spicy chicken and halloumi wraps, both made with only the freshest ingredients. The open sandwiches are loaded with scrumptious toppings - smashed avo and cherry tomatoes as well as salmon, cream cheese and dill.
This patisserie is the place to indulge in decadent and novelty baked goods, and we were absolutely blown away by their sweet delights. Macaroons of all flavours and Lotus Biscoff, chocolate and almond and coconut mini cakes - each treat was baked to perfection. However, we were really wowed by their no-bake cheesecake
drenched in a warm Lotus Biscoff sauce. Delicious!
A signature dish on their menu is the croissant cone - a crispy croissant filled with creamy strawberry or pistachio ice cream. Milk & Cookies is the only place in KZN that offers this quirky dessert, and the different textures deliciously complement each other.
The true show-stopper was the Milk & Cookies cake. A vanilla sponge cake with buttercream frosting and decorated with chocolate chip cookies and mini Oreos, this cake is an experience in and of itself. A plastic ring is placed around the cake and white chocolate sauce is poured on the top. When served, the ring is removed, allowing the sauce to cascade down the sides of the cake. Not only was the cake fluffy and had just the right amount of sweetness, but it looked amazing too.
Keep an eye out because the owners will soon be adding a book club to their cafe to encapsulate the full European experience, starting with their “telephone booth” filled with books that can be borrowed. With adorable decor and yummy bites, Milk & Cookies is definitely Umhlanga’s newest must-visit spot.

Residency PRogRammes Changing EuropE
WORDS Jenny ellinas
“The trouble is: you think you have time.”Buddha
With many permanent residency programmes in Europe no longer available or changing their investment criteria to be more expensive, there are fewer and fewer options to consider.
Over the past few months, we have seen the following substantial changes:
• Portugal has closed their Golden Visa programme.
• Greece has increased the minimum investment amount to €500,000.
• Ireland has abolished the Residency by Investment scheme.
• Malta requires proof of assets of at least €500,000 with at least €150,000 in financial assets.
• Spain is considering doubling the minimum investment amount or abolishing the programme altogether.
BUT…… Cyprus is still open! Recently, Cyprus has made two changes to their Fast
Track programme:
• parents and in-laws no longer qualify; and
• there is an increase in the proof of annual income.
But the minimum investment remains unchanged. This is the ONLY Englishspeaking country in Europe with an affordable and attractive programme that is still available. There’s never been a better time to explore investing in Cyprus to realise your plan B!
Cyprus has been voted one of the safest countries in the world and offers a safe, solid environment in which to invest in real estate. Properties in Cyprus offer excellent value for money when compared to other European countries – especially homes right on or near the Med.
As an ex-pat, you are not restricted to buying only in Special Designated Areas (SDAs), nor are you prescribed to stay in the country every year to retain your residency. Being able to rent your property out has the
real benefit where you can earn a decent Euro-based income. There is a high demand for both long-term rentals and short-term holiday lets. Not only will your asset generate income for you, but you have complete peace of mind that the property purchase is legitimate and your ownership is guaranteed.
YOuR TRuSTeD PaRTneRS
Cypriot Realty is your trusted partner to realise your plan B in Europe. We organise personalised property inspection trips to look at the property options and experience for yourself the lifestyle on offer. From arranging meetings with taxation and legal specialists to opening up your offshore bank account – we hold your hand every step of the way.
Contact us or visit our website www.cypriotrealty.com for a confidential meeting to discuss how Cyprus can fit in with your offshore plans. We will assist and guide you every step of the way to realise your plan B.
GOOD HAIR DAYS
Styling Tools for Every Hair and Look
Summer and the holidays are on our doorstep. Umhlanga is known for humid weather and, personally, my hair doesn’t love it. Having naturally curly and frizzy hair, it doesn’t stay styled for long and takes me at least 45 minutes to straighten! Reflecting on my hair situation, I thought I’d speak to ghd, leaders in hair styling products, about their products and their latest advancements in hair styling technology.
Founded in the UK in 2001, ghd merges science and innovation to create the most luxurious and advanced hair styling tools in the world. From hair dryers and hot brushes to curlers and iconic stylers, ghd has expanded its ranges and offerings to cater for all types of hair and styles. They offer the freedom to express yourself with your hair - curly, straight and everything in between.
The ghd Max Professional Wide Plate Hair Straightener styles hair in half the time and guarantees straight and smooth styling from root to tip on thick, curly or very long hair. Being busy and constantly on the go, touch-ups are necessary. The ghd Unplugged Cordless Hair Straightener is perfect to carry with you, and not to mention adorable.
Of course, you may want to add some movement to your hair and curl it instead. Both their Thin Wand and Creative Wand give you beautiful bouncy curls. You’re sure to turn heads with those fabulous hair flips! When
styling with heated tools, protection is a major factor, so ghd has developed “power couples”: products to use with their tools to ensure the best styling results and hair protection. For everyday heat protection, their Bodyguard Heat Protect Spray is perfect, reducing the damage done by constant styling. For maintaining that hold, their Curly Ever After Curl Hold Spray is here to make sure your hair stays. Paired with a ghd curler, they are unstoppable. Rehab Advanced Split End Therapy is great for repairing damaged hair, sealing split ends for up to 10 washes.
Styling your hair from wet to dry has always been a big topic in the hair industry, and with the ghd Duet Style Hot Air Styler, this is now possible! This is the first two-in-one hot air styler that takes your hair from wet to styled, and with no heat damage. Using Air-fusion™ technology, the tool “channels an ultra-concentrated airflow through a
bespoke drying chamber, expertly designed to work in combination with four smart lowtemperature styling plates to efficiently dry and style hair.” I can definitely see this new innovation saving time, letting you skip the drying part and get “straight” to styling. See what I did there?
Christmas is just around the corner, and what’s a better gift than a ghd styler?
Their Dreamland Collection, launching in October, is an out-of-this-world range. This shimmering limited edition collection features sleek tools brushed with alluring jade and enchanting pink metal accents. It’s the gift of professional styling at your fingertips.
Don’t let the fear of frizz hold you back from conquering the summer - ghd has got your back and the little flyaways in front! @ghd_southafrica
From concept to materialisation, the design process of a home is a special task. It is taking the dreams and ideas of the client and bringing them to life. With every result bringing out the family's personality and making the space truly theirs, it’s a fulfilling experience.
Redesign Interiors’s mission is to push the boundaries of any interior space while remaining within the parameters set out by clients. Through this passionate focus on going above and beyond the expected, they are able to create interiors that meet functional needs, but - more importantly - add a creative flair that resonates with clients. Coupled with an exceptional team of experienced designers, based both in Johannesburg and Durban, led by award-winning interior designer Paige Waplington, this is how they make magic happen.
This magnificent Umhlanga home, owned by a stylish couple with two gorgeous Yorkshire Terriers, boasts a contemporary refined interior with five bedrooms, three bathrooms, an open lounge, a dining and kitchen area, a stunning gym and, the most popular feature, a poolside pergola. Initially, the owners brought on the team to add a balcony across the top level, while upgrading their interior living areas. However, as the project moved along, the more the owners wanted to change, and Redesign Interiors were soon tasked with integrating an outdoor pergola and pool, as well as redesigning their upstairs bedrooms.
These customers had an eye for quality, which the team accommodated by utilising marble and stone, as well as
brass inlays and high-end finishes, giving the home a luxurious look and feel. In some areas, such as the lounge, they worked with their partners to create custom furniture, while in others they breathed new life into their existing fittings. The theme of this house was sophisticated elegance with a light and airy colour palette, incorporating the elements of botanicals. The team used exceptional quality timber and fabrics to create a breathtaking home. The master bedroom cupboards are a gorgeous addition and create a meaningful impact on the room. The combination of timber, smoked glass, bronze handles and subtle lighting really bring this room together beautifully.
Adding a balcony in front of each bedroom, thus creating a patio on the ground level, allowed for space to include an outdoor seating area leading from the lounge. The team updated the facade with modern finishes and a colour palette inspired by the tranquillity of forest settings, including earthy and green tones. You can see these tones used in the bedrooms, such as within the scatter cushions and wallpaper.
The poolside pergola is one of the main features of the home and special consideration was made for using materials that were both aesthetically pleasing and could handle the many seasons experienced on the coast. Marine plywood was used for the cabinetry, tinted polycarbonate sheeting for the roof, and great quality composite decking from Eva-Last, beautifully installed by Tuscan Landscapes, Decking and Construction. Outdoor motorised blinds were the final addition to close off the veranda during harsh weather conditions.
They also created a front sculpture garden, alongside Garden Heart, with a seating area to enjoy the Umhlanga sunshine. This really adds a punch to the first impression of the house.
The end result is a modern, stylish home that pays tribute to its beach-facing location. This was definitely one of Redesign Interiors’s favourite recent projects.
We make it our mission to push the boundaries of any interior space, while remaining within the parameters set out by our clients. Through this passionate focus, going above and beyond the expected, we are able to create interiors that meet functional needs, but - more importantly- add a creative flair that resonates with our clients.
Coupled with our exceptional team of experienced designers based in both Johannesburg and Durban, rebelliously led by award winning Interior designer Paige Waplington this, is how we make magic happen.

Kitchens are the most important areas of a home. It is one of the first places you enter in the morning to make a cup of coffee. It is where you create nourishing meals for yourself or your family. It is also where a lot of memories are made, and for that reason, we take a look at what the current trends are regarding the kitchen space. What better way to get the ins and outs than from specialists in the field, Kitchen Classics?
Established in 1990 and acquired by the current owners, Rob Murray and
Salim Hoosain, in 2007, Kitchen Classics specialises in bespoke kitchens and all other cabinetry, mostly in the greater Durban area, working predominantly on new houses being built. With an experienced team of designers, manufacturing operations and installers, all personally overseen by the owners, they can create a seamless environment within your home.
Looking at the overall design, Rob says, “The trend is definitely more towards natural products and muted, earthy tones and finishes.” Things like textured
products and countertops give the kitchen a very natural feel. “Trends are moving away from the clinical, polished and high-gloss finishes to a natural palette with more use of marbles and granites as statement features in the kitchen.”
A modern take on the 'traditional' kitchen look is also making a comeback, with handles being chosen over handleless cupboards. Sleek and multifunctional appliances are in, as well as dedicating a specific space for a coffee station. Everyone knows the difficulties
with finding or creating a space-saving solution, but grocery or larder units are popular with a lot more use of drawers within cupboards, making ease of access to groceries essential and convenient. “A variety of bins for waste and recycling are also very popular, emphasising clients' desire to manage waste responsibly in their homes,” Rob adds.
With every trend comes new materials that become popular for kitchen surfaces and flooring. Rob finds that quartz products still feature dominantly, but the porcelain products now available are also becoming widely preferred, as clients are spoilt for choice with a range of countertops. “These are extremely durable and can be used externally as well, which is an advantage, especially with the type of homes clients are designing now, with indoor and outdoor living and entertaining spaces merging into one,” Rob says.
The most important part of a kitchen is functionality for its users. For example, a family would need a large amount of space. “If space dictates, a family seating area around the kitchen island remains a very popular trend for casual meals and keeping the family together, with the kitchen being much more multi-functional, not purely an area to cook meals.” Another nifty function for a family-focused kitchen would be, including storage compartments in the cabinetry for kids' school and sports bags, in the scullery or annex to the main
kitchen. They have also been seeing a few aspects of a kitchen utilising smart technology, such as smart ovens and other appliances that connect to your phone or tablet, allowing you to control them remotely. This is gaining popularity, however, the industry hasn’t quite reached the international levels with technology, but the functionality is available in the topend brands.
Every kitchen should have some unique element and should never be a simple ‘cut and paste’. When creating an important
space within your home, you must never shy away from incorporating your own personal style.
“Whether it is a certain timber finish, a particular colour or even a piece of sentimental furniture or cabinet, we can incorporate it to match the client's individual style,” Rob explains. This will always bring interest and individuality to the kitchen.

Celebrating Editions
of the Very Best on the East Coast!
What is The Umhlanga Magazine?
I often introduce it to people as a glossy A4 magazine dedicated to telling the stories of the East Coast. It covers events and stories from Umdloti, Mount Edgecombe, Umhlanga, La Lucia and Durban North. Other interesting facts about this publication is that it is bi-monthly, there are 10 000 copies printed every edition, it was started in 2011, and this is its 70th edition! As one of the journalists for the magazine, this
is the 12th edition that I’ve worked on. Looking back, for the past two years, it has become “my baby”, and I have gotten to work on some absolutely incredible stories! I love the Umhlanga lifestyle and people. I find the coolest and out-of-the-ordinary stories, and there’s always something new coming up that hasn’t been done anywhere else. My first edition was actually an October/November issue, much like this one, so it’s been really special for me to look back on where I started and what I do now!
For this piece, we had to do a bit of digging to find the very first edition of The Umhlanga (which had Tasha’s on the front cover!). As I searched through the boxes of older editions, I got to look at all the different, weird, wonderful, mind-blowing and creative covers we’ve had over the years - from supercars at SMG to delectable cakes from Chateau Gateaux. Each of them showcased a particular part of the East Coast’s charm.
Of course, I can’t put this whole magazine together by myself. The Umhlanga Magazine is lucky to have a dedicated team and supportive
community behind it. On page eight, you’ll find the names of everyone involved in bringing this publication to life. From sales to contributors, so many people come together every edition and create this work of art. We all deeply appreciate every piece of text and image contributed.
To our clients, a special “thank you” for allowing us to market and share your story with our readers. Trusting someone else to get your message across isn’t easy and we are so honoured to be the ones you choose to partner with on this mission.
From our publisher and editor, Lorinda and Justin Scott, “Starting a new magazine is always something of a “leap of faith” - but the Fab Team is never scared of that. 70 editions in, we have proven ourselves to be the strong standing voice of the area. We love what we do, we love the stories we tell, and we LOVE that our readers and advertisers love it too!”
I hope you enjoy this edition and those to come. Here’s to another 70 (and more) editions of the very best of the East Coast!

The Key to Homebuying With SA Home Loans
The greater Umhlanga area is one of South Africa’s fastestdeveloping regions. It offers a unique combination of residential, commercial and tourist attractions while only a ten-minute drive to King Shaka International Airport.
From a residential perspective, Umhlanga has an enviable spread of options. There are trendy studio and one-bedroom apartments for first-time buyers that provide easy access to premier shopping centres and adjacent business nodes. There are comfortable and convenient family homes nestled between the commercial centre and the sparkling ocean, while still being close to a wide selection of top public and private schools and excellent hospitals and medical facilities. Sprawling lifestyle estates provide another select and secure option, yet still enjoying all the convenience of living close to both an idyllic beachfront and a major commercial and shopping hub.
All this has established the area as a sound investment from a property perspective.
SA Home Loans is rightly proud of its investment in its head office in La Lucia Ridge. It is a testament to their commitment and confidence in this unique part of the country. Home buyers can find a sound investment property for every life stage from their first apartment to the ideal retirement retreat, all without leaving a prime area with an unmatched lifestyle.
SA Home Loans was founded on innovation by bankers who noticed the public were paying exorbitant interest rates on their home loan.
As South Africa’s first specialist mortgage provider bringing discounted home loan interest rates, SA Home Loans opened in 1999. With its birth in KZN, the company proudly set down its corporate roots on the fast-developing East Coast. This commitment to customer-centric innovation and its mission to change people’s lives through more affordable home ownership has been the driving force behind the company’s progress and growth over the past 24 years.
As buying a home for the first time is most likely one of the biggest personal financial commitments someone will make, it’s a good idea to seek the guidance of a home loan consultant. The process can initially seem overwhelming, but with the right professional support, it can be relatively stress-free. A good starting point for a first-time buyer (and for any home buyer or home loan applicant) is for them to assess their affordability (what they can afford to repay on a home loan). This will be based on their regular income (or joint income) and whether they are able to put down a deposit.
Once someone has established what they can afford, they will then be able to focus their property search appropriately. To assist in establishing this initial affordability, there is a convenient calculator on the SA Home Loans website.
First-time home buyers are encouraged to talk with an SA Home Loans consultant who will guide them through the process and ensure that they have all the supporting documentation to effectively process a bond application and begin their home ownership journey. A link to an interest rate is offered at the time of granting the bond. They will always ensure that each applicant gets the best rate based on their circumstances. In most instances, the interest rate will be a

variable/linked rate, which may move up or down depending on a number of economic factors. The amount of the bond, the interest rate charged, the perceived risk of the customer and the term (period) of the bond will impact your monthly repayments. If a deposit is paid upfront, this will of course also have the effect of reducing the initial bond value and therefore decrease the monthly repayment amount.
SA Home Loans is a uniquely specialist mortgage provider with an unchanging
commitment to changing lives through home ownership. They have always acknowledged the importance of having sales and support staff that offer unparalleled personal service to every client and potential client so that the home loan journey is a comfortable and memorable one. Each potential homeowner has different needs and requirements, and SA Home Loans embraces that reality.
To this day, SA Home Loans is the only home loan lender with dedicated
home loan specialists. Latest smart technology facilitates the option of an online home loan application process with an ‘ask once’ commitment to the client. Once an initial application document is fully completed, they will take over and manage the process to approval and completion.
Speed, efficiency and peerless customer care will continue to set SA Home Loans apart.
A GUIDING LIGHT
My background in writing was never anything special. I wrote poems of love and friendship in my nursing days at Addington Hospital and gave them out to my friends.
After working at Sherwood Hospice and climbing Mount Kilimanjaro with 12 ladies to raise R1 million for the hospice, I opened my own palliative care business which I ran for a couple of years before going into project management for clinical trials, which I stopped in 2020. With my extensive background as a palliative nurse, I still
have many people phone me for advice. I continue to assist people on their cancer journeys and will soon be launching a website for one-on-one consultations to help guide patients and families in times of need.
My passions have always included growing people and communities and caring for people with illnesses. I started an organisation called Celebrate Life SA to empower women in rural communities alongside our Ubuntu Micro Bakery project, focusing on upliftment and hunger in the
process. My motto is: “We change ordinary women into extraordinary women.” When I started writing my book, Cancer: Navigating the Journey, my inspiration came from the people I cared for and my love of nurturing, holding hands with, and comforting people in need.
From my experience in palliative care and community work, I knew there was a missing link between diagnosis and treatment. People diagnosed with cancer needed a “go-to” before surgery and treatment to enable them to talk through their options and their fears. So, I decided to write a book for patients and loved ones to help them through their journey. In this 156-page book, I answer a wide range of questions, going beyond the treatment and medical information doctors provide to cover lifestyle, emotional and spiritual aspects too.
The aim of the book is to ease everyone’s journey, for patients, loved ones and carers. Readers will find easy-tounderstand information, practical coping tools and an invaluable sense of support for navigating the cancer journey – from the time of diagnosis to remission or terminal stage. The book is available at all good bookstores and online.
This is my first book and I am not planning on writing another at this stage but… life happens! So, let’s see! My future goals are to consult online with patients and families, continue to put initiatives together for Celebrate Life SA to raise funds and awareness of the poverty and hunger in our beautiful country, and assist ladies in our communities.

Sunsets & Mermaids It Wasn’t Just a Dream
WORDS CRISTINA GOVENDER PHOTOS TAYLA JADE PHOTOGRAPHYKnown for its vibrant, beachinspired decor, unique cocktails and great food, Sunsets & Mermaids has become an iconic spot on Chartwell Drive. As we walked in, we were welcomed by a lively atmosphere and friendly staff. After settling into one of their comfortable booths, we quickly got into exploring their diverse menu.
To start off, we chose a few of their legendary cocktails and snacked on delicious deepfried olives while we waited. We were blown away by their signature drinks - the Espresso Martini, Sun Mer-garita, Monroe's Martini and Blue Marlin. The Espresso Martini was the best we've ever tasted, but the Blue Marlin stole the show. Made with Absolut vodka, lemon, vanilla syrup and cloudy apple juice, the cocktail changes colour to a sparkling blue when you dip in a paintbrush covered with edible glitter!
With all of the possible tapas we could try, we had some difficulty choosing! Fortunately, Head Chef Brendon Newport gave us some great options so that we had a variety of
tastes and textures. The Beef Tataki Bao Bun, with tender seared beef fillet in the steamed bun, was perfectly complemented by the sushi ginger, avocado, sesame soy and cucumber salad, which added a bit of a crunch. We mastered the chopsticks and indulged in the Jiaozi Chicken and Prawn Wonton Dumplings. The variations of the chilli dressing on the chicken dumplings and the teriyaki dressing on the prawn dumplings gave the dishes their distinct character.
Sunsets & Mermaids is big on their sharing dishes, so we wanted to keep that going with their expansive selection of mains. Whether you’re craving food from the earth or ocean, there’s something for everyone. The Italian influence from owner Biaggo is unmistakable, as he incorporated pizzas and pastas with a local twist. In honour of this, we chose to go with the Durban pizza, made with a crispy base, yoghurt-based butter chicken curry, caramelised onion, fresh coriander and topped with poppadum pieces. The poppadum added to the crunch while the caramelised onion introduced a sweet component to balance out the tangy flavour of the butter chicken.
The Sunset Linguini, a tomato-based pasta with a touch of cream and topped with chargrilled langoustines, was a mouth-watering seafood dish. The homemade sauce paired superbly with the langoustines which had soaked up the heavenly sauce. Our forks, bellies and hearts were full.
Of course, we had to finish off the evening with sweet treats. Chocolate lovers are in for a real spoil with this menu. The Chocolate Lava, a chocolate fondant filled with a dark chocolate sauce and served with vanilla ice cream, is a decadent dessert that will leave you feeling content after a wonderful experience. Sunsets & Mermaids really is the place where myth and reality come together to create a mystical experience for everyone who visits.

Conquering Sugar and Carb Addiction
WORDS WANDA DU TOIT“Sugar is eight times more addictive than cocaine! While cocaine and heroin activate only one area for pleasure in the brain, sugar lights up the brain like a pinball machine!” - Dr Mark
HymanSugar alters our brain’s biochemical pathways. Many of us use sugar and carbs to alter our brain chemistry, to experience a rush of dopamine that stimulates our reward centres and makes us feel good. Dopamine is also released when one has sight or smell of sugars or high carbs!
Studies have proven that it can be classified as addictive by the following characteristics:
• Bingeing increases the pleasure and reward neurotransmitter, dopamine, in the brain, and the associated pleasurable sensation makes people binge even more.
• Withdrawal: When one removes sugar and high carbs, the body experiences headaches, irritability and nausea.
• Cravings can last after two weeks of abstaining from sugars. Overconsumption increases over time because one needs more sugar to maintain the craving.
• Cross-sensitisation: Often one switches from sugar to other substances like alcohol or a type of stimulant medication to experience the same sensation sugar induces.
The body will not be satisfied with the same amount of sugar continually. It will require more over time, which
is an endless cycle. This addiction has to be broken and replaced with foods that will fuel the body and starve the craving going forward.
The presence of sugar can be underestimated. For example, in a breakfast, you could have:
• 30gm orange or apple juice = 7.5 teaspoons of sugar
• 175gm low fat yoghurt (26gm carbs) = 6.5 teaspoons of sugar
• 100gm Future Life (60gm carbs) = 15 teaspoons of sugar
• 1 cup skim milk (12gm carbs) = 3 teaspoons of sugar
• 1 slice whole wheat toast (17gm carbs) = 4.25 teaspoons of sugar
• 1 tablespoon marmalade or strawberry jam (14gm carbs) = 3.5 teaspoons of sugar
• 117gm apple (25gm carbs) = 6.25 teaspoons of sugar
• 1 cup coffee, 1/4 cup milk and 1 sugar (7gm) = 2 teaspoons of sugar
Without realising it, you consume 48 teaspoons of sugar! If you choose a low-carb option, you could cut down the sugar content to only 1.5 teaspoons.
For example:
• 2 large eggs in butter or coconut oil (0.3gm carbs)
• 3 rashes of bacon or organ meats (0.2gm carbs)
• 1 cup wilted spinach or asparagus (1gm carbs)
• 1/2 small avocado (4gm carbs)
• 1/4 cup cherry tomatoes (1gm carbs)
When you eat like this, you can even reverse type 2 diabetes and bring balance to hormones as the gut will be fed correctly and will not be under pressure, causing your immune system to be weak.

In a real estate market with high interest rates, finding your dream home might seem like a daunting task. However, with careful planning and a strategic approach, you will uncover an opportunity to make your homeownership dreams a reality. Here are five tips to help you find your ideal property in a market with elevated interest rates.
1. Set a Realistic Budget: High interest rates can impact your purchasing power. Before you start your home search, take a close look at your finances. Determine a realistic budget that considers not only the purchase price of the home but also the potential impact of higher interest rates on your monthly mortgage payments.
2. Get Pre-Approved: Being pre-approved for a mortgage gives you a clear understanding of how much you can afford to spend. It also demonstrates to sellers that you are a serious and qualified buyer, potentially giving you an edge over your competition. Knowing what a bank will lend you should be your first step in your home-buying journey.
3. Prioritise Must-Haves: In a market with high interest rates, you might need to adjust your expectations. Identify your non-negotiable must-haves and prioritise them. Write a list and evaluate every property you view against your priorities. This will help you narrow down your options and focus on homes that meet your essential criteria.
4. Plan for the Long Term: While high interest rates may impact your immediate budget, remember that rates can fluctuate over time. Consider a long-term perspective on your investment. If you find a home that www.grantgavin.com
meets your needs and you plan to stay there for an extended period, the potential impact of rising rates may be mitigated by the property's appreciation.
5. Know Your Stock: Typically, in markets with high interest rates, there are higher levels of homes for sale on the market. Take the time to properly view enough homes for sale to ensure that you have a good understanding of which homes are priced at a level that represents fair market value. Not all homes sell at their asking price, especially overpriced homes.
While high interest rates may present challenges, they shouldn't deter you from pursuing your dream of homeownership. By being proactive, realistic, and flexible, you can successfully navigate the current market and find a home that aligns with your needs and aspirations.
While interest rates are an important factor to consider in your home-buying process as they impact your monthly repayments on your bond, remember that interest rates always move in cycles. Markets with increasing interest rates will naturally be followed by markets with declining rates, so make the best decision you can in the moment, whilst preparing yourself for a future of constant change.
By being proactive, realistic, and flexible, you can successfully navigate the current market and find a home that aligns with your needs and aspirations.
