ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Otto Schade - Chilean Artist – “Breaking the Flatness of a Canvas” Otto Schade - or "Osch" as he is widely known is a Chilean born in 1971 with German roots. He is an artist, architect and urban sculptor who left Chile to pursue his passion for art and ultimately show his work throughout Europe. Osch has based himself in London since 2006, where he lectures architecture at degree level. Since 1996 Osch has exhibited his work in collections and solo exhibitions in Chile, Germany, U.S, England, Netherlands, Russia and France. His debut show in Hong Kong presents two series of work: “Orb”, which explores the juxtaposition of evil (expressed as war) and good (the innocence of children); and “Ribbon,” which gently pokes fun at contemporary themes using a ribbon motif. Osch is constantly concerned with “breaking the flatness of a canvas”, as he describes it himself. His method involves a purely playful and experimental artistic impulse, where images start to take place vibrantly and rather unexpected places and creatures begin to lead the artist to the final result. With an artistic style fluctuating between the boundaries of surrealism and abstract, themes for his works are generally related to the artist’s private stories, offering a unique insight into his dreams and obsessions, as well as political issues. Manifested in his work as a primary source of inspiration are great painters such as Max Ernst, Roberto Matta, Salvador Dali and MC Escher amongst others. Working mainly with oil paint and traditional supports such as stretched canvas, Osch is a practitioner of other techniques such as collage, illustration and more recently stencil. His street/urban art has become a major focus for his twisting, interwoven ribbons from which he has created stunning pieces. He creates his art on brick walls, shutters and boards around London, Blackpool and Bristol. He often ventures abroad with recent trips to Holland, Berlin and soon onto Ibiza, the Netherlands and then back to Berlin, where he has been invited to leave his mark on the Berlin wall. Collectors of Osch’s works include: Prime Minister David Cameron, model Noami Campbell, rocker Brian May of Queen, celebrity chef Jamie Oliver and popular singer Foxes.
