all me crazy, but I love the change of seasons, especially the Fall and Winter months! There is just something about all the brilliant colors, the crisp cool air and the excitement of the upcoming holidays. And with the change of seasons, our days are shorter and we spend more of our time indoors. As I began to “nest” again this year, I started to think about how to make the most of my space indoors and what changes I can make to “spruce up” for the holidays and family gatherings, beginning with my floors. Conveniently enough, each year the flooring industry rolls out its newest styles, designs and colors! Designing with floors is all about creativity, and you will see just that reflected throughout this magazine, translated into designs inspired by nature, details like exquisite medallions, inserts and backsplashes working with wood, metal and stone. How about a stroll down the fashion runway with wool as we celebrate the world’s most versatile and natural fiber (see pages 16-29 and 74-80)? Sometimes it’s about the things you can’t see, like the new generation of Stainmaster™ technology built right into your carpet’s cushion. It’s not always just about products, but also about making sure you are “in the know” about where to buy your flooring. We asked the experts at the WFCA (World Floor Covering Association) to share with you the benefits of buying your flooring from a specialty retailer who knows flooring (see pages 68, 69 and 73). Be sure to check out the website (www.wfca.org) for more information. Whatever the challenge, creativity is always about special ways of expressing yourself. We know the creative process takes time, if dreams are to be achieved, so we’ve invested our time so you can relax and enjoy some of your creative side. Best wishes for a warm, safe and happy holiday season,

new season, the Autumnal Equinox, so it’s time to get into Fall mode.
Mohawk’s SmartStrand Silk Summer Getaway in color Country Cream Beige provides extraordinary softness on the outside and incredible durability on the inside. SmartStrand Silk is also healthier because it doesn’t require the use of cleaning products that emit fumes. What’s more, since SmartStrand’s stain and soil resistance is built in, there is no need to apply topical anti-soiling agents to your carpet, ever.
Whether it’s jumping into a pile of raked leaves, making homemade pumpkin bread or breaking out the cable-knit sweaters, Fall brings a different significance for everyone. What does Fall mean to you? Perhaps you are anticipating the holidays with gatherings of family and friends and it’s time to refresh your gathering spaces with new carpet, or maybe it’s time to turn that spare room into a den, home office or your very own private, at-home getaway! >>

What It Takes For The Perfect Carpet Installation Once you’ve settled on the perfect fashion for your home, it’s time to make sure your carpet looks absolutely perfect! That takes knowledge, experience, planning and craftsmanship. Quality carpet is made by companies that invest in education as well as technology so that their craftsmen have the knowledge to do the job right the first time. It’s important to do business with a flooring retailer that understands this and provides installation training which meets the manufacturer’s requirements. This gives the craftsmen experience to deal with just about any challenge that could come up on the job. Before your installation team arrives, it will have inspected your existing floor and discussed preparation with you, such as the subfloor’s condition and how to remove and dispose of what’s down now. Because these professionals specialize in one thing—flooring—they measure efficiently with an eye toward a practical and tailored fit. They will measure to get the most from each square foot of carpet and plan your layout to minimize seams, which is especially important in custom installations that include a border or inset. Did you know that carpet needs to be installed within certain temperature ranges? For that, your carpet needs to become acclimated to its new surroundings for at least 48 hours so it won’t shrink or become loose-fitting There’s a lot to know about fitting carpet to your home, but leave that to your flooring retailer. The benefits of working with a specialty flooring retailer are that they have specialized training, they understand new products, and they know how to provide the best installation. That’s why, as specialty retailers, they are the perfect fit! >>

Caress from Shaw, shown here in Natural Art, is just one of the soft and sophisticated colors inspired by nature’s flawless color palette.
Falling in love with color Today’s carpet colors are rich and elemental, inspired by the abundance, breadth and beauty of nature, varying from rich to subtle. Neutrals are having a resurgent popularity, timelessly and tastefully harmonizing with any design style. And the latest colors are as gorgeous as the natural terrain and waterscapes that inspire them. The new heathered carpets are particularly popular, offering a subtle blush of color. Pay particular attention to flecks of color in traditional beige, tan and cream neutrals, as well as in the new neutrals – smoky blues, soft greens and pale yellows. These elements are perfect for picking up color notes in your other furnishings. Because patterns and metallic looks are popular with designers, many manufacturers are incorporating metallic fibers into their carpets. >> 8

Is yours a quiet household or one full of pets and kids and traffic? share this with your sales professionals; it goes a long way in helping them help you find the appropriate product in the style you like. Protect your investment in quality carpet with quality cushion that meets the manufacturer’s specifications, and purchase walk-off mats or rugs that capture destructive dirt and grit at entryways. Also purchase furniture glides. For more information go to www.fabulousfloorsmagazine.com
The visual appeal of the latest offerings in carpet reflects a trend toward soft but distinctly textured looks with subtle shading and visual depth. If you are considering florals, look closely at the new textured backgrounds. Or if the look you seek is more contemporary, note the latest refined, tone-on-tone linears and “quiet” geometrics. The most recent technologies have created remarkable visual effects and even greater durability, combining cut-and-loop piles and yarns with varying thickness and lusters. A cut-and-loop can offer distinctive patterns that include leaves, vines or dotted configurations. Be sure to ask your flooring representative about wear resistance, as well as the special appearance of different products. Consumers are definitely looking for something beyond the ordinary, and retailers are responding. Like the rest of us, they have been affected by a turbulent economy and have a renewed sense of expectation concerning quality, value and service. >>
Aberdale Antelope from the Skins II Collections from Helios answers the call of the wild with six exotic patterns that roam across a cut-pile terrain. The dramatic look is tamed by the softness of 100 percent Helios-approved nylon, which is treated with 3M Scotchgard Protection and Stain Release for added performance and durability.

The ‘secret mission’ of your Carpet Cushion
Above: Style is a feeling, a personal expression of who we are. Perhaps you have a passion for subtle, soft color like that portrayed here in this luscious carpet from Wunda Weave.
They can lead you to a traditional Berber, for example, updated with increased visual interest created by dissimilar pile cut and thicker, deeper loops. They can explain how pile, weave and fabric – from wool to Polypropylene – factor into cost, wear and stain resistance, as well as style – from sophisticated Saxonies to casual friezes – depending on your needs. When consumers demand value, they include environmental responsibility. And when it comes to the carpet industry, they are “singing to the choir.” Mohawk Industries pioneered the industry standard for recycling, renewing, reusing, recovering and reducing strain on natural resources. >>

Used under your carpet and rugs, it once was called padding. Now the story of cushion can be told. While we never see it and seldom think of it once it’s installed, cushion, as it is more appropriately called these days, actually has a variety of valuable functions. Today’s cushion serves two purposes. One is fashion oriented; the other has to do with protecting your floor fashion investment. First, it is cushion, far more than your carpet, that determines how your carpet and rugs will feel when you walk on them. Plus, the correct cushion helps maintain your carpet’s original appearance over the long haul. (It also increases air flow between your floor and carpet or rugs for better, more efficient vacuuming.) Cushion functions as a shock absorber, taking the pounding of everyday foot traffic. This helps your carpet feel better, look better and last longer. While technological advancements have brought us to a point where carpet these days rarely wears out, cushion’s job is to help prevent carpet from what is called “uglying out,” that is, losing its shape and resiliency. These days, better-quality cushion also provides features that run-of-the-mill padding never dreamed of, like blocking moisture and providing thermal and sound insulation between floors. In terms of comfort, which comes first, your cushion selection is largely a matter of personal preference; for example, softer, more luxurious cushion in the living room and master bedroom or a firmer feel in a family or child’s room. Selecting the wrong cushion might actually void your warranty. You can’t go wrong if you buy the best for the life of your carpet Ultimately, you should base your decision on four things: personal comfort, performance that’s matched to your carpet, functionality for your lifestyle needs and, of course, a warranty that’s just right for you.
Stain and odor protection you can’t see. Style and beauty you can’t miss.
STAINMASTER® carpet and STAINMASTER® carpet cushion are the perfect combination for beautiful floors. The famous stain resistance of STAINMASTER® carpet protects from the top, while STAINMASTER® carpet cushion provides additional protection underneath. By keeping liquids above the cushion, STAINMASTER® carpet cushion manufactured by Carpenter Company with Odor Guard Technology allows spills to be more thoroughly cleaned while helping to reduce or eliminate odors caused by pet accidents as well as most food and beverage spills. Weaving Wool’s Spell Wool has been part of human life for more than 12,000 years, and it’s still keeping us warm and dry and looking great. Originally used to protect the body from heat and freezing temperatures, wool continues to play an important role in man’s battle against the elements – indoors and out. Its overall performance stems from the complexity of its fiber, developed by evolution to protect sheep in all types of climatic conditions. The same properties that make wool unique for clothing and blankets also make it a unique carpet fiber. >> Pack a powerful decorating punch with this woven cut-andloop carpet from Karastan called Oakwood Block. ritish designer Jamie Harrison is no stranger to wool, having started working with nature’s fiber in the late 80s while designing contract custom woven Axminster carpet for the US market in Merseyside, UK, close to his beloved homeport town of Liverpool, which he shares with the Beatles and Liverpool Football Club (soccer). In his latest venture, Jamie has partnered with newly founded Legacy Mills, started by the Hagaman brothers, Daniel and Michael, third-generation carpet men, previously of Hagaman Carpets. Jamie heads the creative side of the business including design, color and product development areas, although in reality, the team works closely together on all aspects of the business, from purchasing machinery to cutting samples together! It’s a rare combination of personalities and skills; everything is performed with a sense of wit, and a wry smile is never far from the surface. Laughter abounds at Legacy Mills Carpet.
Legacy Mills is totally dedicated to wool, which it describes as a gift of nature. It has embarked upon designing an exciting new line of beautiful wool carpets. The West Yorkshire collection is designed around the idea of classic motifs and rich (yet everso-slightly muted) hues, interpreted in new ways to create an instant modern, yet classic look for any interior scheme. These carpets and rugs are true contract quality, consisting of the perfect balance of 80 percent wool and 20 percent nylon (80/20 construction), providing the optimum combination of style and performance. Products shown here are a taste of the company’s initial offering, designed by Jamie Harrison and manufactured in the USA by Legacy Mills using New Zealand wool. Jamie Harrison says, “Our goal here is simply to provide beautiful, sustainable floor-coverings in contract quality. Products that adopt the latest thinking in terms of technology and set trends in terms of creativity and color from concept right through to the final interior design solution. It’s something we are very passionate about.” Ziggity Zag

See how the floor functions as a focal point for this room’s design. Pictured here is Orbit in Dark Earth from Nourison’s Heavenly Collection. Made from 100 percent New Zealand Wool.
Wool’s fiber membrane tends to shed moisture, so it holds spills on top of the carpet yarns. That’s how most wools initially can “hold” most spills just long enough for an immediate clean up, without seepage into the cushion or the subfloor. Wool can act like an atmospheric buffer, balancing humidity in the home by absorbing moisture in humid conditions and releasing it when conditions are dry. Wool by nature is known to be flame retardant and has excellent sound and heat insulating properties. Wool’s high moisture content and proteins means it will not support combustion, it’s difficult to ignite, it’s self-extinguishing and will not melt if burned. Wool is known to be non-allergenic, does not promote growth of dust mites or bacteria and can have an effect on the atmosphere in the home by absorbing nitrous gases. Wool resists static electricity buildup. Wool is a natural, renewable and biodegradable resource. Wool loves color. Its white fiber locks in dye for excellent color fastness, and its affinity for dyestuffs presents a broad palette of color and design combinations. >>
Celebrating Wool’s Nature There are some facts about wool that you knew and maybe forgot or wish you’d known. Either way, you’ll be glad you’ve got them at your fingertips. Wool’s natural crimp gives carpets built-in resilience to crushing so they look good longer, while wool’s natural resistance to dirt and soiling makes for exceptionally easy maintenance. Wool resists soiling and is easy to clean because of a natural scaly outer surface that keeps dirt and grit high on a carpet pile for easier vacuuming. That same scaly outer surface also makes wool resistant to wear from heavy traffic and furniture. As a result, you will find wool carpets hard at work in residential as well as demanding commercial environments, such as hotels, restaurants and transit systems where the volume of pedestrian traffic is punishing. 24

Finding That “Just Right” Wool Flooring You remember wool carpets and rugs. Sure you do. For many, the mention of wool flooring conjures up memories of their mother’s or grandmother’s wool carpet, around since their childhood, or oriental rugs that are decades old. But your memories and the new age of wool are worlds apart. When it comes to color, style, texture and pattern, wool’s back in fashion. Aside from its many performance benefits, wool has incredible aesthetic appeal. Wool flooring manufacturers are some of the world’s most creative artisans, weaving and tufting the fiber into a wide array of captivating textures and patterns, including velvety cut piles, friezes, bouclés, shags, textured loops and Wiltons. Strikingly rich, saturated colors are another hallmark of wool. Its affinity for color makes it possible to create carpets and rugs in every shade imaginable. Many people choose a neutral shade of carpet because it allows for greater flexibility, and also lends itself to layering by adding an accent or contrasting rug. However, saturated shades provide tremendous creative freedom. Dynamic colors create stunning effects and help to define areas of the home with exhilarating style. Wool carpets in exotic colors can inspire an interior design concept. >> 26

mAkING PATTErNs Work Allow one strong pattern to take the lead in the room, and use complementary patterns in the same colors as accents. Keep your walls and sofa neutral. This makes it easier to update your décor with trendy rugs and pillows. A neutral backdrop also gives your patterns room to breathe. Separate your patterns so they don’t touch. Make sure upholstered furniture has legs and that a solid-color edge is added to the bottom of chair skirts and full length curtains. Try a variety of prints within a room, including floral, stripes or geometric shapes. Mix pattern sizes. If your rug has a large floral design, complement it with pillows in small stripes or geometric patterns. Decide on your main color and make sure this color is in each fabric and floorcovering piece that you add.

cceel e l ebbr raat ti n i ngg wwooool l | | Combining texture, pattern and color with the toe-curling comfort of wool makes for carpets that are as pleasing to the eye as they are to the hand… or foot. Someone once describe wool carpet as a “bathrobe for the whole house.” This cozy image speaks of wool’s softness and the warmth it portrays. With the busy pace of today’s schedules, we like to surround ourselves with carpet that beckons relaxation. Wool carpet draws us to the floor, inviting us to curl up with a good book or play games with the kids. There is so much to share when it comes to wool. It is an incredible natural fiber that is often misunderstood. People who think that they are allergic to wool or that it doesn’t clean well sometimes don’t consider wool when it comes to choosing a carpet and miss the comfort and beauty it can bring to a home. Made from 100% New Zealand wool, Woolston Plaid from Karastan brings a modern look to a traditional pattern.

hErE’s WhAT’s oN ThE hoTLIsT ThIs sEAsoN: LIGHT, BREEZY COLORS – Muted wood and soft, gray stone inspire the neutral color palate of the latest laminate flooring. Lighter colors have been in fashion for decades and are likely to continue as classics well into the future. The pastel tones are easy to pair with bright furniture or strong accent pieces. And the lightness adds an element of space to smaller rooms. WIDE PLANKS – A floor made of broad, wide planks – 6 inches and wider – offers a rustic richness to cozy rooms and larger spaces. Look for planks in traditional wood grains like hickory, oak and cherry. MULTI-WIDTH PLANKS – This look offers an eclectic flair to every room. Perfect for any fan of light and dark woods. A multi-width floor provides a fantastic opportunity to mix and match.
Venetia from Formica creates the look of stones laid out in a modular format with a soothing, earthy color palette.
Reclaimed Collection Plus, shown here in Cottage from Shaw Laminates, features an attached back and is inspired by the reclaimed trends in flooring, cabinets and furniture. Using a new wire-brushed, ultramatte-finish texture, it replicates European oil-rubbed looks. The special finish diffuses light, so the colors are seen beautifully.
WOOD DESIGNS – As durable and versatile as natural woods, laminate looks just as great for a fraction of the price. Mahogany, Brazilian Jatoba and Black Forest are popular options. SINGLE PLANKS – Long, seamless pieces of wood are a top trend in the current laminate marketplace. This style is taking over the butcher-block look that has been popular in seasons past. EXQUISITE FINISHES – High-clarity laminates and embossed-in-register finishes offer a classic formality that can be dressed up or down according to the occasion. These materials look expensive but are actually very durable and affordable. It’s important to follow trends and keep pushing the envelope with design. But the fact is that laminate flooring has staying power, and homeowners can be happy with their laminate floors for years to come.

Underlayment Enhances Laminate Floor Performance Want your new laminate floor to function as well as it looks? Put the proper padding beneath it. Underlayment engineered for laminate flooring and typically made from textile fibers can smooth out little subfloor imperfections, provide proper support when walking and increase comfort underfoot. Underlayment that features strong soundsuppressing attributes can quiet impact noise and footfall, dampen ambient sound within the room, and inhibit voices, TV and other airborne sounds from traveling to the floor below. Quality underlayment can also feature moisture management that will protect the finished floor from harmful water vapor and reduce the possibility of mold growth, as long as the leak or other water source is stopped. And premium underlayment formulated to be odorless, non-allergenic, and VOC-free, such as QuietWalk速, a premium underlayment by MP Global Products made from at least 94 percent preconsumer recycled textile fibers, will help maintain good indoor air quality in your home. Padding that carries an R-value (a measure of thermal resistance) will help keep a floor warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. The higher the R-value, the better. And, last, underlayment engineered for laminate floors can make them sound more like real wood. quality CeRtiFied lamiNate FlooRiNG What if there was a group comprised of experts and leading manufacturers in the flooring industry that you could count on to find the very best laminate materials for your home or business? An organization that can tell you all there is to know about laminate flooring – from how to choose the best quality products to information such as the benefits of laminate flooring and how to care for your floors? The North American Laminate Flooring Association (NALFA) was formed in 1997 to be that team of experts. Comprised of U.S. and Canadian manufacturers and importers, NALFA works tirelessly to educate those within the industry and consumers about the benefi ts of laminate fl ooring. The group also has developed standards to identify the best laminate fl ooring and underlayment in North America and stamps it with the NALFA Certifi cation Seal of approval. “We work hard to ensure that any NALFA-approved product is one of the best on the market,” said Bill Dearing, president of NALFA. “Laminate can be one of a consumer’s top options. If a product carries the NALFA Certification Seal, it is competitive with woods, stone and even marble.” An American National Standards Institute (ANSI) organization, NALFA adheres to the highest testing and performance criteria to find high-quality materials. They rely on professional, third-party experts to explore how each laminate product will respond to stains, pressure, light and water. If it’s not strong enough to survive, the product will be improved until it meets NALFA standards.
Once approved, the laminate is guaranteed to be great looking, easy to clean and resistant to dents and stains. “We’re borderline obsessive about our testing,” said Pat Smith, NALFA technical director. “We will only stand behind the best, and it takes very hard work to find out exactly what that is. But at the end of the day, it’s worth it.” And because NALFA-certified products are made in North America, more laminate sales mean more North American jobs. When you buy NALFA-certified laminate, you can take pride in your patriotic support of the economy. A product carrying the NALFA Certification Seal means North American workers created your laminate with strong dedication to quality and consistency, adhering to NALFA’s professional principles: • ESTABLISH and MAINTAIN consistently high performance and quality standards for laminate flooring products • EDUCATE and COMMUNICATE the meaning of NALFA standards and the value of the NALFA Certification Seal • SHARE knowledge with retailers and installers through hosted certification classes • RESEARCH and EVAULATE ongoing opportunities for improved standards and technologies “The main objective of NALFA is to share the countless benefits of a product that has gone under the radar for years,” said Dearing. “Through education and the continued exploration and improvement of laminate flooring, we are achieving success every day.”

It’s a joyous time of year, focused on gatherings with family and friends. But for many it’s the most stressful time of year as well. From preparing the perfect Thanksgiving meal to finding that just-right gift for mom – sometimes you just need to take a step back and relax. But how, you ask? BE hAPPy. I consider myself a pretty happy person overall. my glass is always half-full, you could say. But it’s so easy for life’s little hassles to overshadow everything else. did you run out of your favorite shampoo? hit traffic on the way to work? of course you did! But it doesn’t have to ruin your day. A couple of years ago I came across a book called “The happiness Project.” (www.Gretchenrubin. com) In it, a young mother realizes that she’s spent a lot of time letting the little things get her down – so she embarks on a yearlong quest to be ‘happy’. Each month she focuses on a different aspect of her life and the result is quite uplifting. you certainly don’t have to go to the extent she did – but reading her book will give you some takeaways you can use each day for a bit of a sunnier outlook.

Luxury vinyl tile, or LVT, is a premium, designerquality vinyl resilient flooring with features, benefits and looks that are sometimes very difficult to comprehend. It’s that good. In the early days of vinyl resilient flooring, the primary emphasis was on function, durability and economy. Design-ability was a bit limited, although

traditional resilient flooring has come a long way as you see from the previous pages. The advent of LVT established a primary focus on high fashion for this flooring category, opening wide the doors to styling. Typically, luxury vinyl offers colors, looks and shapes, like stone planks and real-wood-length LVT planks of three to four feet that you can’t find in traditional resilient flooring, and often not in other categories, and, thus, greater installation flexibility. LVT is different from the outset. Even when you first see it, you can’t help but note that it looks and feels very much like real stone or wood or tile. (There are versions that can be installed with or without grout for very tailored, trendy looks.) LVT composition is also different. The top or protective wear layer (sometimes more than one) is incredibly rugged, enough to defend against not only everyday scratches but also tears and gouges, while the bottom layers are far more dimensionally stable. Hence, some LVTs feature lifetime warranties and versions that are engineered for commercial spaces. The name says it all.
You can’t tell it’s vinyl! It really looks and feels like ceramic/ stone, but it isn’t cold! Comfortable, healthy and worry free. Almada – New Traditions in Cork Tira Areia from US Floors brings a fresh twist to cork, one of nature’s best building materials. Beveled, narrow planks provide the traditional look of hardwood floors and have all the benefits you can only get from cork. More comfortable and warm underfoot, Almada floors naturally resist mold, mildew and pests.
This Floor Fashion is a real Corker! Cork has long been used for everything from sandal soles, food storage, bulletin boards and floats for fishing nets to engine gaskets and, of course, bottle stoppers. Cork is a wood product with some unusual natural benefits. As a floor, it is warm and comfortable underfoot, naturally antimicrobial and non-absorbent; it absorbs sound as well as impact; and it’s durable, repairable with wood filler and dent resistant. Because cork is flexible, it forgives many floor and subfloor imperfections; also, it does not spread flame. Cork flooring is available in tile, generally a glue-down installation, or in planks – cork laminated over a rigid coreboard installed as a floating floor, much like laminate. Like solid wood, cork can be finished and re-finished, stained, bleached, pickled, painted, etched, inlaid and installed with a border or in any number of patterns.
Often called “the other wood,” cork can be finished, refinished, stained, bleached, painted, etched, inlaid and installed in patterns. Or you can simply purchase a color, like Pytite from the Gem Collection at APC Cork 12 x 36 planks. How fabulous is that?

Classics include oak, cherry, maple, pine, hickory, walnut, pecan, beech and birch, with color tones ranging from parchment to burnt caramel, rose beige, deep cinnamon and cocoa brown. Imported exotic wood species with their exceptional colors and textures have set the trend in recent years. Amazing blues and espresso browns from Africa, Asia and South America have added to the customary neutral palette. Brazilian Cherry and African Bubinga, for example, offer pinkish or russet hues. Some exotics even become more purple with age. Others are known for their unusual graining, flecks and rays. The news today is exotic looks from domestic species, stained to look like gorgeous exotic varieties but made from renewable domestics like birch and ash. Today’s homeowners are weary of fads and wary of impulse buying. We want an investment in home and family – investments with lasting value. It may be the uncertain times or it may be the Autumn season, but things seem crystal clear. And whether we are back from our Summer travels or simply our daily trek to work or school, it just feels right to bring our treasures home. Among floors, that treasure is wood.
The Kährs Artisan Collection, the ultimate artistic wood flooring range, is based on the unique character of oak in combination with highly skilled craftsmanship. Each design within the Artisan Collection has its own unique style and character, pictured here in Linen.
With the inception of tough, responsible forestry practices worldwide, it is important to note that American hardwood forests are renewing, abundant and sustainable. In fact, the quantity of hardwoods in American forests today is actually 90 percent greater than it was 50 years ago, producing oxygen and reducing greenhouse gases!
Imagine a floor that seems to meld two entirely different materials – soft, sensual fabric and strong, solid wood. This gorgeous hardwood has a delicately sueded surface that actually feels soft to the touch. Each unique plank is hand brushed with firm wire implements, which dig into the soft portions of the wood, leaving the harder minerals intact. The result is a new emphasis on the grain. Five Questions About Bamboo
1.
WhAT do I NEEd To kNoW ABouT BAmBoo For FLoorING? A lot. Actually a very hard grass, quality bamboo is considered to be an environmentally friendly product, rather “green” given the fact that it can renew itself every five and a half to six years. Properly harvested, it can be harder than red oak and North American maple. Grown largely in China, quality can be inconsistent depending on grading, premature harvesting and using the wrong species. (Moso bamboo is considered best for flooring.) Check for clarity, consistency of color, quality control and grading practices from a company you can trust that offers a high level of support and customer service.
2.
Is ThErE A BAmBoo sTyLE For mE? Bamboo works well with any décor; have it at the shore or in a loft overlooking the city lights. Wide-planks flooring is great for large, open spaces. Narrower, random lengths, especially with other color variations, are more eclectic. Vertical grain (lengthwise) is traditional and formal. Horizontal or flat grain is informal and fun. The ever-present bamboo “knuckles” are reminiscent of knotty pine.
3.
WhAT ABouT CoLor? Bamboo is available in natural (light), caramelized (heated to create tones from honey to coffee) and colors like espresso, cherry, walnut, charcoal, wheat, chestnut and java.
4.
hoW Is BAmBoo FLoorING INsTALLEd? Just like traditional hardwood. It can be nailed, stapled, glued or installed as a floating floor. It’s an engineered product, so many versions can be installed below grade. Some versions are available as a glueless, self-locking plank.
5.
Is BAmBoo EAsy To CArE For? As easy as it gets. Look for bamboo with supertough, water-based, solvent-free finishes and environmentally safe, formaldehyde-free adhesives. As with any floor, vacuum or sweep regularly, remove spills promptly, limit harsh sunlight and reposition rugs for a long-lasting, uniform appearance and use walk-off mats and furniture protectors. No need to damp mop or use household cleaners or wax. Simply wipe with an approved cleaner.

Borders and decos can help define an area, accent a threshold, stair landing, or doorway, or highlight an area similar to the way an area rug would. There are no rules governing the placement of decorative inlays. unlike area rugs, wood inlays take all their color variation from natural wood tones, not dye or stain. medallions usually include five or six different wood

AMERICAN ESTATES™ by Marazzi USA captures the artisanal feel of hand-scraped, hand-oiled hardwood but is authentically reproduced on a strong and durable porcelain body that withstands rigors – water, stains, freezing conditions – that are often the nemesis of real wood. Finely rectified wide-plank sizes in 6” x 36” and 9” x 36” facilitate minimal grout joints and stretch the line of sight. Two sizes and three color ranges – Natural (light), Saddle (medium) and Spice (dark) – can be used singly or in combination. Shown is the Natural in 9” x 36”.
Inspired by Travertine, this classic line called Cinema from Florida Tile brings a more consistent and refined Travertine look to this porcelain tile. Created with a rustic, yet upscale theme in mind, the product was developed to be a harmonious blend of graphic and texture.

The mantra of Oceanside Glasstile is “From Curbside to Oceanside,” which describes the company’s dedication to transforming glass into expressive design materials that would otherwise end up in landfills. hen most people think of tile, they think ceramic tile, but there is a host of other products that fit into the category, too – like porcelain, mosaics, glass, metal and, of course, stone (for example, granite, slate and limestone). Then there are trim and decorative pieces. Plus endless colors in numerous shades and tones, textures and finishes, and so many other variations . . . many of which you will find within these pages. From the baby’s nursery to the kitchen and bath, to the front path to your house, there is a tile for every space and every use. Unlike other types of flooring, the right tile can dress up every aspect of your home and excel in all types of climate and performance conditions – heavy traffic, water exposure, freezing, high temperatures and the like. >> 56

The art of “Mingling” It’s a look that used to be called ‘eclectic’. Think of it, instead, as “mingling,” the straightforward definition being to combine things in ways that create a new look without any loss of the initial elements’ individual characteristics. Among designers this ability to mingle elements is powerful stuff. It addresses the demand for uniqueness in décor. What if you could find a tile that does that? It would be a tile that is unique and also one that lets you mix-and-mingle for any number and kind of décor updates for the foreseeable future. Think how you might use pieces ranging from family heirlooms and vacation collectibles to modern art in what might be considered an urban loft or a country farmhouse. Florida Tile offers this capability in a new high defi ni-tion porcelain of the same name, Mingle HDP, which brings together the best looks of Travertine, Breccia Marble and Limestone in one new style, and simultaneously introduces a whole new world of design opportunities. Mingle re-imagines those stone traditions by first dissecting their classic looks, then re-piecing or mingling their elemental patterns. The result is an entirely new and cohesive look that can blend in or stand out, depending on the look you seek. Initially a four-color line, Florida Tile decided to create the first two by mixing the graphics, an Ivory (Warm Winter Mix) and a Grey (Cool Summer Mix). The other two are a Bluish
Grey (Dry Stream), created using only uniquely colored Travertine graphics, and a warm Beige tone (Soft Rock), infused using only the Breccia Marble graphic. To further push the design envelope by mingling sizes for endless installation options, Florida Tile offers Mingle HDP in 12x12, 12x24, 18x18 and 6x24 formats, 12x12 mosaics, 6x6 inserts, chair rails and chair rail stops, bullnose and listellos. It’s fresh. It’s modern. It’s a look that’s just coming into play, all-important if you want to pull off a cohesive, appealing design with that mingled, eclectic look. FALL 2013

Even after 2,000 years, tile is still a functional, timeless art form. In fact, tile – big and small, in countless shapes of stone, ceramic and now porcelain – has never been out of style! Want a quick, striking makeover for your kitchen or bath? Because you don’t have to rip out floors, cabinets or fixtures, a new backsplash lies somewhere between clever cover-up and a complete facelift. And, if designing with ceramic, porcelain or stone makes you nervous, the backsplash is a great place to start. First, a new backsplash lets you be creative yet makes a major change all in a relatively small space. That goes whether you want to do it yourself or plan to have a pro do the installation. From a cost standpoint, because you’re designing a well-defined space you can afford to splurge – even on a very tight budget. For example, you can opt for a less-expensive field tile and create fascinating focal points with high-style insets. With pieces ranging from one-inch to 24-inch squares, the sky’s the limit for self-expression. Consider designer grout colors, too. Chances are that your first backsplash will soon lead to the next and then to creating your own tile or stone artwork on your floors, walls, patios and out to the garden!

Steeped in Tradition, Grounded in Luxury Gary Inman, Allied ASID, NEWH When your client is housed at a vaunted institution founded by Thomas Jefferson in a neoclassical building named in honor of the novelist William Faulkner, even design specifications for a contemporary refresh require a nod to provenance. Commissioned to update spaces in the Miller Center for Public Affairs at the University of Virginia, Gary Inman, principal and director of hotel and home design at Glavé & Holmes Architecture in Richmond, Va., drew on his deep experience. The firm has developed a national reputation for historic restoration and creative interpretations of traditional design for several national trust properties. For the center, the design was defined by the flooring choice, a product steeped in tradition — wool. Among the most ancient and beloved fibers in world, wool blends both technical excellence and a vast archive of designs dating from the fifth century B.C. Indigenous to nearly every culture, wool remains a staple of designers who admire its luxurious hand, resilience, tensile strength and, above all, its capacity for brilliant colorations. To date no synthetic fiber has surpassed wool for it range of possibilities. Whether considering rugs or wall-to-wall carpeting, from Persian hand-knotted to loomed and tufted varieties, there is a fit for all project types.
Inman’s team envisioned period appropriate designs for the Miller Center. For the forum room, a venue made famous by C-Span, they selected a wool axminster based on an early 19th century painting. The Middleditch reading room (pictured) features a traditional fretwork design in a bright contemporary hue. Gary Inman, principal and director of hotel and home design at Glavé & Holmes Architecture in Richmond, Va., is an allied member of the American Society of Architects. A doctoral candidate in architectural history, he is a member of the Society of Architectural Historians. Drawing on his extensive knowledge of historical design solutions, over two decades of practice he has created enduring architectural spaces for clients, both residential and commercial. S
tarting a home remodel is always exciting, but a bit scary, too. There are a ton of questions to be answered, and all homeowners and homes have their own unique ideas and demands. Who should you hire? What do you need to learn? What does your dream home look like? Do I need a designer? How are you going to get it all done? What should I expect to spend? There’s one question that everyone should be able to answer. What is ASID? And the answer is one that makes all of the other questions easier, and helps bring everything under control.
Some people pronounce it as a word, but it stands for the American Society of Interior Designers. An official “ASID” designation requires designers to pass a two-day examination (called the NCIDQ) that qualifies them in every aspect of the interior design business. If you see ASID after someone’s name, it means they have met the top qualifying standards that the design profession has to offer. Most people, even industry specialists, have never done a complete home remodel before. There are all kinds of pitfalls and problems that can arise. >>

zealous, uneducated or make common mistakes. Builders and contractors may be familiar with a lot of plans and layouts, but they have little training in truly designing a room or an entire home. An ASID designer has the right training, experience, vision and creativity to make the design process easy, unique and exciting. Industry connections are important in any project.
Debbie L. Talianko, Allied ASID, CID Talianko Design Group Some people don’t realize that there is a real difference between an interior designer and a decorator. Interior design involves many objectives. The first being the health, safety and welfare of the public. To become a member of ASID, one must pass several milestones, which include a formal education and work experience. Aside from space planning, budgeting and product specification, the interior design education includes training in accessibility, safety, ergonomics, special needs and green building. Designers are also trained on national, state and local building code. They keep up on the latest products and they are help to a strict code of business ethics. When you hire an ASID interior Designer, you can rest assured that your project will be one that is carefully thought out, planned and executed.
The beauty of a historic home with the comfort of modern amenities. Color brings this room to life and keeps alive the spirit of the Arts and Crafts Period.
Hiring an ASID designer will help you to create the home of your dreams! ASID holds its designers to a high standard of expertise and ethics. While there are few monitors in the overall field of design, choosing someone who is ASID qualified is an assurance of a standard of excellence. You wouldn’t choose a contractor without a license; ASID is an “insurance policy” for good design. You hire a coach to learn your favorite sport or musical

instrument, to learn a new skill or to move forward in your business or personal life. Look at an ASID designer as your remodeling coach, helping you make decisions, removing the pitfalls and making the process easier and less stressful. Because of the ASID continuing education requirement, your ASID designer will be up-to-date on the latest products and make sure that you get the best product for a project. This can save you a lot of time and money, because they have already done the legwork for you. They also have access to more products than are available at your local home store.

When I meet with a potential client, I tell them they would be best served by making sure that the designer they hire is a member of ASID. Knowing the designer is an ASID member gives them the assurance that they are hiring an educated and qualified professional. I emphasize that ASID members follow a Code of Ethics that promises the client that we are acting in their best interests and that we have a fiduciary duty to them. In addition, this means that we don’t take payments from vendors, and we don’t copy others.
Keeping a project on track in easier said than done. Often the best-laid plans can be sideswiped by a lack of experience and/or skillful preparation. When you hire a professional interior designer, project manager or general contractor, you want to know that your project is in great hands and that they will bring integrity, skill, experience and knowledge to your project. Hiring an ASID professional means that you can be assured that your project will be in the hands of a professional who chooses to perform within the highest level of professional guidelines, ethics, and standards of excellence our profession has to offer.

When you purchase flooring, you are making an investment in your home. When making a purchase of this nature you’ll want to make it with a Specialty Flooring Retailer. You can rely on the knowledge and experience of professionals who deal with flooring day-in and day-out, year after year. With this knowledge comes superior understanding of and appreciation for customer needs and lifestyles. Flooring professionals understand that you, the customer, count on them for their knowledge about overall flooring categories, customer service, installation, warranties and follow-up extending far beyond their storefront. After all, when you are a small store and specialize in selling one thing, repeat customers and wordof-mouth are the only way to stay in business! Because of that, they have built their business around you! So now that you know about the importance of where you do business when it comes to flooring, let’s discuss how to choose a flooring retailer.
Word of Mouth! Talk with your friends about their experiences and be on the lookout for beautiful floors around you.
When you see them make sure you ask where the floors came from and who installed them. It goes without saying that the Internet is a great resource, too. Go online and review websites like wfca.org to educate yourself and to find a list of reputable dealers who can help you make your best flooring decision. If you have some neighborhood flooring stores in mind, Google them and look for reviews.
here are some questions to consider that should be answered easily by any specialty Flooring retailer worthy of your business: ∙ ∙ ∙ ∙
∙ ∙ ∙ ∙ ∙
∙ ∙ ∙
What are the latest trends in flooring? how do I determine which floor is right for me? how soon can I have my new floor installed? What do most customers not ask that they should ask about their new floor purchase? do you stand behind all of the products in your showroom? Who will handle and be responsible for installation? do you have visuals of completed installations I can review? do you offer professional design help? do you offer warranties on your products? Can you tell me about them? does your final cost quote include all services with no hidden fees? Is customer satisfaction guaranteed? What if I have an emergency?

Get The Credit You Deserve When purchasing your next floor, ask about credit promotions offered by your specialty flooring retailer. No longer is credit merely a way to spread out payments. It’s become something far different—a money management tool for today’s family chief financial officer. More than a way to manage payments, credit represents the opportunity to buy better merchandise, especially when the timing’s right. Flooring is an investment as much as it is fashion because it becomes part of your home’s structure. When purchasing flooring, consider how long you plan to keep that floor and how long it will take to pay it off with credit. Wood lasts generations. You may want to change your carpet every five years or so. Ask yourself if the floor will add substantially to the value of the home. Credit options may turn out to be a bargain if you can comfortably pay off the purchase in a year or two, plan to keep the house for a long time and plan to buy lasting, quality fashions. Your project will likely begin with a budget. So, with flooring comprising as much as a third of one’s renovation cost, your credit plan can actually keep costs contained by helping to track and limit expenditures. Plus, credit lets you purchase economically—for example, when that special flooring goes on sale. Smart money managers also look to store credit as a way of keeping their regular credit cards open for routine— even emergency—expenditures. Because credit impacts your overall cost, look for stores that promote their own store card and offer specials to new cardholders. Ask about long-term special programs such as one and two-year “same as cash” offers. As a matter of course, better stores should be able to offer 60 to 90 days with no interest. At that time, your purchase either is paid off or rolls over into a revolving charge with interest starting on the purchase date. As a credit customer you can call ahead and plan future purchases with your specialty flooring retailer. Ask to be added to its VIP list for private offerings, too, and look for special shopping days and special products offered to credit card holders.

hen the leaves fall, the nights draw in and the brisk weather reminds us that we need to wrap up because it’s getting colder, the instinct to hibernate almost raises itself from deep within us... we want warm, cozy and comforting homes that cocoon us from the world outside.

Wool is the fibre of all seasons, but in Fall this amazing fibre truly proves its worth. The smart attributes of wool provide characteristics that will add immense value to the living space all year round.
Comfort and Warmth... Perhaps more than anything, though, we seek comfort as the nights draw in. Wool furnishings, fabric and flooring all contribute to added comfort; they are highly tactile and feel very different from manmade fibres, providing superior softness underfoot and offering an added luxury in ways that we may not fully appreciate. How? Well, wool flooring offers incredible levels of insulation against noise, reducing echo and buffering sound, which prevents the irritating room-to-room, floor-to-floor transfer of sound that can ruin our peace and quiet. >> FALL 2013

campaign for wool | This same insulation performance, which is provided naturally, offers all-important warmth. However, because it has a complex structure the wool fibre can adapt to the space – absorbing and releasing humidity – which means that you will never become too hot or too cold. This is how the sheep manages in a heavy fleece; the wool adapts to the sheep continuously. Essentially, wool is a working fibre that is grown and not manmade. As a result, it offers numerous added extras that simply cannot be reproduced and which continue to perform and offer amazing service long after it has left the sheep.
Wool Carpets Look Better for Longer ... Home is where the heart is...and a real home is for living in! And whilst we want it to look beautiful, the practicality of something as fundamental as flooring is a major priority. Wool is a really durable and robust fibre – remember that it is grown outdoors – which helps make wool exceptionally strong. It can resist a lot of tough conditions, including the intense activity of a busy family home. Choosing wool carpets for those well-used areas (halls, stairs, living rooms) will help to ensure that your carpet will withstand the footfall of those repeat pathways in the home. Wool resists tracking and flattening because it has an elastic-type spring that constantly pushes against the pressure and so preserves the good appearance of the carpet or rug over many years. This also helps to keep any pattern in the carpet in place so there is reduced distortion over time. Choosing the right pattern and texture is a very personal thing, the right shade of cream, the perfect blue, a Persian style or an ultra-modern look – we all have our own ideas. The wonder of creativity is fulfilled by the amazing design talent within the wool industry, and the colours and patterns are truly outstanding. >>

FALL 2013

ccaammppaai g i gnn f foor r wwooool l | | Planning flooring is an important part of your dÊcor and design, as flooring is the backdrop and will frame and hold your living space together. Wool will work well with wood and tile; indeed, the hard floor is suitably softened by the mix-and-match approach to flooring, allowing you to use the right type of surface in the right place and move from functional flooring to the comfort of wool as you walk through. It can be used as runners with borders and in area-rug style or it can be fully fitted wall-to-wall throughout, so that you can have exactly the look you want. The wool industry always comments on the superb way in which dyes work on wool, how well wool takes dyes and how it can provide an exceptional clarity of colour across all spectrums – intense to subtle shades always look beautiful. Whilst there is already an amazing range of shades, remember that there is also a custom route for those who really want to create the unique floor.

Natural is best.... always Reflecting on the good things in life often returns us to simple pleasures. An open log fire, a homemade supper, a walk with the dog as the sun sets. Wool grown on the humble sheep is natural, renewable and sustainable and so, by its very origin, a really good thing. As we look to improve our environmental position, we need to look for the most eco-friendly and choose it. Make wool your choice this Fall.
