CARRY

MINATI Interviewed by Sukhmani Sadana

How does it feel to be the youngest and most popular digital creator in Asia? I am so grateful to the audience because without them I don’t think it would have been possible. I consider myself lucky and blessed to be in this position where people love me unconditionally. I believe more than the numbers, it’s about the impact you have on so many lives. It’s indeed a moment of pride for all of us that an Indian is leading in Asia now. While what I do appears to be the most fun job on the planet there are a lot of shortcomings that tag along with the responsibility of being Asia’s number 1 YouTube creator and adds up to the whole pressure. You see it’s not enough to simply generate great content. The audience expects consistency and frequency if you want to stand out in a crowd. Having said that my aim was never to ace some world record, it was always about enjoying what I did and if success came my way then it was due to the love of my fans, blessings of my family and God’s grace.

How do you choose the subject or topic for your videos?

You dropped out from school to pursue your YouTube career. This is a story we would love to know. How did you choose this career? APRIL 2021 | 14

I was around 10 years old when I discovered YouTube and I was instantly drawn towards the potentiality of it. I thought about pursuing it as a full-fledged career when I was 13. It was a very intuitive calling for me. It was all very organic and let’s just say I was a curious kid. I remember in the start, I used to record myself doing all these crazy football tactics so that I could replay it a million times and learn from my slipups to ace the sport. Little did I know at that time I’d be doing content creation for a living. It honestly scares me sometimes when I look back and see how I dropped out to pursue the digital medium that wasn’t as evolved as

it is today. I did miss the regular college life and hanging out with friends on campus but this is all compensated by the love and support showered by my fans over the years. My parents were a massive pillar of support when I first started out but there was discipline inculcated. They made me promise them that I would complete my education via distance learning. The alias for me is just a cool sounding name that I spotted as a comment from a fan on one of my posts and I just liked it so I retained it.

It all depends on the format of the video. If it is a consecutive action-reaction video it takes me two weeks. If it’s a rant or a current topic it can take more than a month because I have to create a base which is further modified and shot, thereafter I take feedback from my management team to gauge how much more fine tuning is required. When I am creating content, I don’t decide in advance on how many expletives would feature in a video, it’s all contextual to the narrative. I do not have any set formula for choosing someone for my roast and I do not target any particular individual, group, community, etc. I feel that’s unfair, biased and against my upbringing. I try to find content which is genuinely amusing and cringeworthy.

APRIL 2021 | 15

With some many people trying to be an influencer or content creator, how does one stay afloat and stand out in the crowd? Experimentation is a key driver for content survival. With the advent of technology, the exposure to the online world has doubled and today content creators are as important as cricketers and Bollywood stars in the ecosphere. Your platform needs to be a place where you can be limitless and your most authentic self without the fear of being judged. Experimental content is the king of new age media today, and the algorithm loves you the most when content speaks to the audience and breaks stereotypes.

APRIL 2021 | 16

Which is that one video you enjoyed making the most?

I can’t pick a particular video because every video is special but the videos I really enjoyed making were “Life of a cringe pop artist” which nudged me to retract from my comfort zone and surprise my audience and “The art of bad words” which was the first time I actually did some serious reading and did an in-depth study on linguistics and their impact on society.

What is the key to good content according to you? My numero uno advice would be to not fall prey to the rat race of likes and followers and be unique in the content you create. Decide on a differentiating vantage point in terms of your content selection, something that you are passionate and confident about and will give you an edge over your peers. Good content is the only way to build an organic and authentic subscriber base. Please don’t allow the concept of followers or likes influence your commitment to the art. Create content because you’re passionate about it and see merit in what you have to offer to the world.

APRIL 2021 | 17

You’re making your Bollywood debut. Tell us more about that? MayDay isn’t my full-fledged debut. It’s more like an extension of what I do. What made it really interesting for me to align forces on MayDay was when I heard I am supposed to be essaying my own character (CarryMinati). I eat, breathe, sleep and live my character every single day. I learnt a thing or two about acting from Ajay Devgn Sir and I can’t wait to get back on the second schedule. I never imagined I could be a one take artist and specially when facing such legends in reality but the entire team has been very encouraging and supportive. It’s amazing to be teaming up with Ajay Devgn Sir again for Big Bull since now Yalgaar is the official title track of the film. Though if you ask me, my authentic acting innings will happen when I secure an opportunity to dedicate myself wholeheartedly to the art unflinchingly, everything else I do right now I consider as a special appearance. Currently I dedicate 10 hours in a day for content creation which will never take a backseat and I’d like to consider that as my passion and calling, acting and music for me is a medium where I can showcase my art to a more varied audience.

What’s your final goal or have you already achieved it? To represent India on the world stage when it comes to content creation, music & gaming and further stretch my wings and keep flying.

Teague Egan

/02 Can you tell us more about your work?

Interviewed by Rishika Garg

/01 How did this idea come to your mind to start EnergyX? Renewable energy is going to be one of the five biggest industries in the entire world in the next 10-20 years. Also, I have been both a Tesla shareholder and car owner since 2013, witnessing the rise of the company before most saw it coming. It gave me great conviction on the future of renewable energy, leading me to where I wanted to focus my time and effort. To this end, in early 2018, I found myself exploring the high desert salt flats of Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia. To my surprise, I discovered this salt flat also happens to be the largest lithium reserve in the world. Until this moment, I had never thought about where lithium, the most important material in rechargeable batteries such as the one that powers my Tesla, comes from. Even today, there are only 2 million EV’s produced per year, while some predict there will be 50m per year in 2040. We are going to need orders of magnitude more lithium as our society transitions towards a clean energy future, and this is why I decided to start EnergyX.

APRIL 2021 | 20

My mission at EnergyX is to accelerate and enable affordability for the broader use of lithium-based energy storage in everyday life. To that end, our company is focused on two key initiatives. The first is around developing direct lithium extraction (DLE) technology. Currently, lithium is produced using painstakingly slow, natural evaporation ponds. These ponds take 18 months to produce lithium and only recover 30% of the available lithium. DLE technology solves that by using mechanical separation to increase recovery rates, decrease time, and ultimately lower the cost of production to meet upcoming demand. Second, EnergyX is working on next-generation solid-state battery technology. Longer, lasting, and more efficient batteries are key to a renewable energy future. If you think about how far computer chips have come from the 1980’s, battery technology will have a similar trajectory in terms of capacity and energy density. We are working on a battery that can drive 1000 miles per charge.

/03 What motivates you? Reversing the effects of climate change is a critical component for a better future. There are many ways to leave the planet a better place than you found it, but if I can do my part in pushing humanity forward, ultimately, this is what motivates me. On a more granular level, I think a lot about innovation, creativity, and design in the efforts I am putting forth behind EnergyX. We are at the cutting edge of new electrochemical science. This is exciting! Although it is extremely hard work, there is nothing like trying an experiment 1000 times but getting it right and achieving a breakthrough. The journey of learning is quite motivating itself.

/04 What key activities would you recommend entrepreneurs invest their time in? Initially, invest in yourself. At the beginning of any entrepreneur’s journey, it is you and your idea. I don’t care if it’s EnergyX or Amazon. At the beginning of Amazon, it was Jeff Bezos and his idea. I recently saw a post about the first book he ever sold on Amazon in 1995. Investing in yourself and your idea is the first main activity. Eventually, you want to invest in your team around you. You are only as strong as the people you surround yourself with, and it’s a good idea to surround yourself with people who are smarter than you. Make sure they are smarter than you, but always make sure you are the hardest working individual in your company and lead by example. At this point, I am far from the smartest person at EnergyX, but no one will work longer hours than me. I invest my time into the company to make sure every detail is perfect. As an entrepreneur, your company is your baby, and you need to give it absolutely everything you have in order for it to be successful. Not many understand how hard it is to truly succeed at building a successful business; there is no substitute for hard work in my mind, and I put EnergyX above all else.

/05 What has been your most satisfying moment in business? This might be weird to say, but I don’t think I have had a truly satisfying moment in business yet. This may be because my mindset is to never be satisfied and always want to accomplish more, move to the next goal or milestone. Being an entrepreneur, literally, every day has ups and downs, usually small wins and major challenges. When I look back on what we have accomplished with EnergyX, the first license I signed with the University of Texas was a satisfying moment, each patent we filed was a satisfying moment, the partnership we established with Dr. John Goodenough, the Nobel Prize-winning inventor of the lithium-ion battery was a satisfying moment, and all the contracts we have signed with customers were satisfying moments. The team of brilliant scientists and engineers, each new addition to the team was satisfying, and further, each investor who believes in our company enough to invest their own hard-earned money was satisfying, but the truth is we have so far to go and are only scratching the surface of our potential. I don’t like to look back on “satisfying” moments but rather look towards the future of what needs to get done tomorrow, and next week, next month, and year.

/06 How do you generate new ideas? Thomas Edison, the greatest inventor of all time, who held over 1000 patents, famously said, “Everything on earth depends on will. I never had an idea in my life. I’ve got no imagination. I never dream. My so-called inventions already existed in the environment -- I took them out. I’ve created nothing. Nobody does. There’s no such thing as an idea being brain-born; everything comes from the outside. The industrious one coaxes it from the environment; the drone lets it lie there while he goes off to the baseball game. The ‘genius’ hangs around his laboratory day and night. If anything happens, he’s there to catch it.” This certainly gives me perspective when I’m thinking of “new” ideas. Another important theory for generating new ideas is often spoken about by Charlie Munger, Warren Buffet’s right-hand man. Rather than focusing on accepted practices or theories, if you study widely and deeply as an expert generalist in many fields, such as design, microeconomics, psychology, law, mathematics, biology, engineering, etc., and apply those insights to idea generation, a few things will occur. 1) You will see the world more accurately and make better predictions of the future because you are not as susceptible to the biases and assumptions prevailing in any given field or community. 2) You will have more breakthrough ideas because you pull insights that already work in one area into ones where they haven’t been tried yet, and 3) you will build deeper connections with people who are different than you because of understanding their perspectives. Entrepreneurs and individuals who have the ability and curiosity to master and collect expertise in many different disciplines, industries, skills, capabilities, and topics are the ones who have the ability to draw on that palette of diverse knowledge to recognize patterns and connect the dots across multiple areas coming up with unique, innovative ideas.

Marshall Morris

What kind of culture exists in your organization? Our core values are #HTAG - Humility, Tenacity, Adaptability, Generosity, so we lean into these for our culture and make sure everyone is operating in them. This creates a culture of fun, friendly, driven people who enjoy challenges. In addition, our main company is called “HomeLife.” The reason is that we want everyone to have an amazing home life as well as work-life—time with family, time to spend having fun, enjoying time off, etc. We encourage people to take time off for family stuff, events, vacations, etc. It is a priority because we know if someone has a good home life, their work-life will benefit.

Interviewed by Rishika Garg

How do you prioritize your work? I spend a lot of time assessing and evaluating priorities based on goals. This is my “sharpening” of the axe. From there, I filter and then set a block of time to work specifically on it and then go after it.

How did the idea for your business come about? My business partner Justin adopted a dog and saw there was a huge community of passionate people who loved to connect. So we launched a Facebook page, and it quickly grew to 1M people. This confirmed there was a market and jump-started our journey in the pet industry. First writing content and then manufacturing purpose-driven pet health products.

APRIL 2021 | 22

What was your key driving force to become an entrepreneur? I was always an entrepreneur. In 5th grade, I used to hustle Halloween candy in November after everyone had eaten theirs. I’d read books, get free stuff and then sell it to my peers. I also love to win, so business + winning is what gives me drive.

How do you want to change the world? I want to change the world by leading and setting an example of generosity using business and showing how powerful a force it can be for creating a better world for everyone.

APRIL 2021 | 23

Varun Thakur Interviewed by Sukhmani Sadana

Raju Shrivastava; they were ruling the roast at that time. So I never thought stand-up comedy could be a legitimate carrier option. I used to be the funny guy in the group initially all my family and friends pushed me, saying, “You should do comedy; you are really funny, you will be able to do it.” And I was scared as making your friends and family laugh is easy, but to go ahead and do it in front of people who don’t know you, is tough, so that’s when I actually participated in Vir Das’s Amateur night. He used to do this open mic competition for new comics and people who wanted to try out, and the 1st time I did it, I ended up winning it, so that gave me the confidence that waits I can go in front of 200 people who don’t know me and I can make them laugh. So I think it was the support from the friends and my family and obviously winning this that gave me the initial push to go ahead and do stand-up comedy, and with the years passing by as we got better at it, you have the comedy stores that opened up here you know you got more confidence going up on stage and doing it, and then comedy didn’t just become stand-up comedy it sort of offshoot into a whole lot of things like social media right now is full of comedians who don’t only do stand up comedy but also content creation and that for me the initial burst that I needed and rest is history.

/01 What is the last thing you do before getting on stage, and why?

What gives you the initial confidence that humor could pay the bills? APRIL 2021 | 24

Well, none of us thought that stand-up comedy in English was a legitimate carrier option, say in 2007- 2008. There were a handful of people, Vir das, Papa CJ, Ash chandler, just a few of them who have done it because comedy at that time was largely in Hindi. You had Johnny Lever,

Well, I don’t have a pre-show ritual as such. I usually have a glass of warm water as my voice gets really hoarse but other than that, I always keep one thing in mind, and that is a piece of advice I’ve gotten from another comedian called Imran Yusuf that made sure you are having fun on stage because if you’re having fun on stage, the people watching you’re having fun on stage. So regardless of what happens, regardless of what your material is, just mentally know you are going to work on stage and have a good time. So that is literally the only thing that I keep in mind. I try to keep the nervousness and everything out and just psych myself into having fun on stage, and that’s that.

What is your biggest strength as a comedian, and where do you feel it benefits you in everyday life? Well, I personally think that every comedian obviously has his/ her own niche or forte. I have realized over the years doing comedy that I love saying stories because even in real life, I am telling stories to my friends family, and that is what I want to sort of like to translate on stage. For me going up on stage and performing is me sitting with my friends in the living room and chatting; that’s the vibe I go with. So whoever comes to watch my show always has pointed out that the way I do my stories is a lot of fun. So that’s the thing I use most in my set. Secondly, I think for me, both my comedy journey and my acting journey started at the same time, and they both are beneficial to each

APRIL 2021 | 25

other. So the day I have a good show, and I am shooting that day after, I kill it on set because I have already come with that high of having done a good show. Similarly, when I have acted on a show or a film, I come back, and automatically, my comedy becomes better because I use a lot of acting skills and abilities in my set. So both these things really work well for me, and I think for every comedian have the biggest benefit of doing comedy is

APRIL 2021 | 26

that you are able to take everything in your stride. The biggest advantage of doing comedy is that you’re always laughing; you’re always used to taking all the most depressing situations and turning them into comedy. Like for example, if I have something weird that has happened to me in real life that I’m very sad about, like a bad show, I end up taking that, making it into a comedy set, so it works really well for me both ways.

What is the story behind the creation of Vicky Malhotra? Well, everybody had asked me this question, and it’s funny because I think it was about five years ago when I was honestly a little stagnated with what I was doing. I wasn’t having fun; it was feeling very repetitive and monotonous, and I wanted to instill some new drive and energy in my profession, in my career, and that’s when my then manager said, you know a lot of people do characters and since you are good with characters why don’t you try doing a character and I had already done Vicky in some shape or form in my set somewhere, so I just decided okay I’m gonna get up one day and I’m gonna do this character because I spent so much time going for auditions that I know this specific type of person really well and I literally woke up one morning I went to google and I type Punjabi male model and a hundred pictures show up, I saved all of them, and I went on Snapchat they have face swap app on Snapchat, so I started using that, and this guy at number thirty-two fit my face perfectly, and something about it just appealed to me, and I was like, you know what? I’m gonna go ahead and use this, and I started doing Vicky, and before I knew it, it just blew up and became this sensation which is great for any performer right like something you want to do just catches, everybody’s fancy, and everybody’s talking about it, and Vicky became an instant rage so to speak because somewhere down the line everybody related very hard to Vicky because we’ve all met, seen or know a Vicky in our lives and it was me putting it out in front of them. In fact, some of the biggest fans of Vicky are women, you know, because they understand that I’m not trying to be sexist I’m showing you what those guys are like through Vicky. So, yeah, Vicky has been the biggest boon to my career because it got a lot of people talking about it, and a lot of people were introduced to other stuff I do because they found me through Vicky. So yeah, I have created a bit of a Frankenstein monster to a point where people are like even in my show, they come and say like “When is Vicky coming?” And I have to tell them, “Guys, I am Vicky, okay? It’s not a separate person”, but yeah, Vicky has been great for me.

Ricky Gervais or Russell Peters? Well, Ricky Gervais, hands down. To be honest, though, when I started watching English comedy back in the time, like 2004-05, it was Russell Peters. He was sort of responsible for a whole lot of people from India to get acquainted with English standup comedy because he was a guy who looked like us who was doing comedy. So I mean definitely a lot of peoples 1st exposure, including mine, could’ve been Russell Peters, but as you get into the field and start watching more and more, your horizon broadens, and for me, Rick Gervais is fantastic because he is somebody who does not give a shit about anybody or anything he goes up on stage speaks his mind, and he speaks it beautifully with so much strength and truth in what he speaks that you’re not just watching it for the comedy you’re watching it for his life lessons for his point of view on things so 100% Ricky Gervais for me over Russell Peters.

Kynd is an obsolete form of the kind. It started with a vision to be kind to every living being around you and to spread kindness; they started to defy the thoughts of people that European food can equally taste good in veg. First of its kind, this vegetarian cafe is also known for its freshly baked bread indoors. In an Era where epidemics like the Coronavirus and bird flu are taking ground, they wanted to be organically veg and still have quite a lot of Jain options too.

Eshita Deoskar

“One must always have the courage and be Kynd,” this quote sticks just right when you think of Ms. Eshita Deoskar, the founder and owner of Naap and Kynd cafe and European bar. Being an extremely compassionate individual, Ms. Eshita Deoskar started Kynd in 2020 to create an unforgettable experience for her customers.

Being a vehement traveler, Eshita was inspired by the diversity of different cuisines, clothing, and cultures. She has worked at a global fashion retail company in Dubai, and it was at that moment she first realized her passion for fashion and food. Through that journey, Naap, a fashion boutique, and Kynd Cafe were born.

Having been a professional equestrian rider and having been a part of multiple national-level games since the age of 9, Eshita has the undying spirit of a sportsman. From the discipline to the vigor and the compassion that makes a sportsman, Eshita embodies it all. She has acquired her formal education in computer science in engineering but found her true calling in the hospitality and fashion industry. Her vision for Kynd Cafe and Naap fashion boutique is to retain the same quality and zest they showcased at the beginning of their journey and propel it, pan India.

Inspired by the dome glass windows in Amsterdam to the beautifully articulated colors and interiors that caught Eshita’s eye, she emulated her experience in creating Kynd cafe and bar. The cafe’s ambiance is built to tingle all five senses and has a cumulative effect on the scrumptious vegetarian European food that they cater to.

APRIL 2021 | 28

Through sheer determination, empathy, and zeal Ms. Eshita Deoskar aspire to become a global icon and inspire every woman entrepreneur to unleash their fullest potential.

KyndCafe and Bar

A high ceiling, fresh interiors, natural daylight all day, and a striking open-air bar is creating an aura for exquisite meals. Kynd has also been kind to trees and hasn’t dislodged or cut them; instead, they have used it as a prop to make one feel close to nature all the time. A cafe with a phenomenal island bar surrounded by a plush seating arrangement for a raging chill vibe. The huge Giraffe and the bar with quirky lights branching out are truly captivating. The bar area is an ideal space for guests to sip on drinks, snack on appetizers, and groove to the DJ’s beats.

Driven by the passion for bringing a unique taste of European cuisines from across the world, Kynd Café and bar was introduced in Pune in the year 2020. The vegetarian European gourmet cuisine by Kynd is a mix of all types of food, starting from the tongue-numbing spices to the mind-tingling desserts. The women behind the show, Eshita Deoskar and Vaishali Sanghvi are thorough foodies. They are fashionable and are avid travelers. Vaishali is a budding woman entrepreneur with a strong family business background, and Eshita envisions expanding her horizons to her fullest potential with Kynd. She wants to create a fine-dining experience for her guests and use her exquisite ambiance to enhance their dramatic dining escapade! The backbone of the Kynd café and bar are the co-brand partners and founder of Colossal Hospitality Pvt Ltd, Vaishali Sanghvi, and Vishal Karia. A businessman from his early 40’s from Mumbai, an out-and-out retail and restaurant background. With the help of their Colossal kitchen team, Eshita, Vaishali, and Vishal have successfully put together this paragon.

Face Art

Agora Gallery represents a diverse body of artists whose works are related to the contemporary landscape of the 21st century’s international art world. The gallery strives to provide opportunities for artists to engage with the New York art world. It has been working to cultivate the careers of exceptional artists for over 35 years, guided by the artist-forward spirit upon which it was founded. Agora gallery also represents the much celebrated and Indian senior artist Madhuri Bhaduri.

In 1984, Agora Gallery was launched in SoHo, the city’s pre-eminent downtown art district of the time, and the incubator of countless history-making art careers, and fabled galleries. Starting as a small gallery on the 3rd floor of an old walkup building in SoHo, the gallery strived to grow with time, perseverance and hard work.

Growing and Striving through the Decades

What’s in a name?

Agora is a Greek word which means “open marketplace,” where everyone is welcome. Besides selling and buying, it is a place where people meet, and exchange ideas. Agora Gallery, living it up to its name, showcases a spectacular array of talented artists from the community and around the world, providing original art of excellent quality to a sophisticated collector base. Famous for its stimulating and diverse receptions, the gallery offers a unique opportunity for art collectors and artists to engage in a productive dialogue that further strengthens the connection of the art community.

The Woman who Started it all A painter and sculptor, Miki Stiles, moved from Israel to New York City in the early 80s to pursue her artistic career. Completing her MFA at the School of Visual Arts in NYC in the mid-80s, she set out to find a gallery to represent her and her works. Back then --- and even today --- it was an almost impossible mission - galleries were looking for artists with an existing collector base. It was a catch-22 which she tried to break, and after long months and futile efforts, she decided to open her own gallery. With the determination not only to showcase her works, but provide a place for fellow artists to exhibit artworks and connect with the international art community, Agora Gallery was inaugurated.

APRIL 2021 | 102

Miki provided an opportunity for artists from all backgrounds and who have no track record in a certain market. Promoting artists with great potential but no existing collector base is a risk. With only meager resources, Miki had to charge artists a fee for promotional services in order to sustain the gallery. This is how the gallery has strived for more than 30 years in order to function with the same passion and drive that Miki Stiles had. Agora grew in size, moving from Greene to Prince Street to Broadway where it occupied two large spaces in a prestigious gallery building. During all these years, Miki worked with hundreds of artists who shared her passion and dreams and presented their work to New York’s passionate art community. While running the gallery, she continued to create art and worked mainly with silkscreen prints and sculpting. After she passed away, her son continued her mission. In 2002, the gallery moved to the growing Chelsea art district, and has carried on with the legacy that Miki Stiles had built for artists who need that essential opportunity to enter the world of the international art community. In any field, the first step is the biggest leap to take, and Agora Gallery has been providing that first step to promising artists from all kinds of backgrounds. At present, it has grown, providing more promotional services and opportunities, that are up-to-date to the current trends in the art world.

Game Changer:

Madhuri Bhaduri I had no artist in the family who could have paved a way for a profession or made me believe that art could be a profession. I didn’t have the right environment where someone encouraged me to paint and take it as a serious profession. It took me my first ten years after being well received by an audience to realise my potential. If you have an artistic environment there is motivation all around and it becomes easier to follow a path. For me, I had to find my own path and believe in it. Art is a very uncertain profession- walking on a road and not knowing where it leads. As a result, just for the pure passion of your work, you brush these hindrances aside and still pursue your path. Living life entirely on my own, emotionally and financially with keeping your reputation intact and having your ethics and middle-class values in place and the strong sense of spiritual beliefs steered my way through all the obstacles. To create a career in art where I had no mentor to guide and support or a family member who had any inclination in this field...it was purely my passion that drove me to where I am today. In the soul’s journey it helps to be self-reliant and to believe in your own self which in turn empowers and makes you more confident to face whatever comes

your way in the path of life. The emotional struggles that I faced also pushed the limits of my creativity. It was only this form of creative expression that paved the way for a more confirmed journey into the art world. My spirit, energy and optimism were expressed in the form of my works. In the past few years, over 80 percent of all Generation Y art buyers moved to buying fine art online. Curbing traditional means of communication, social media allows you to speak with your followers about who you are and what you are making. Someone can inquire about a piece, and in an instant, it’s sold. The social media boom means artists no longer have to rely solely on galleries and the art world elite to validate their success, while gallery representation is still prestigious, it’s no longer necessary to go through this middleman. On the contrary buyers could also get turned off by your social media presence if it is not done well. The right balance that showcases your personality and professionalism, to make sure you aren’t damaging your online art brand. Not all social media impacts are beneficial. The way the art is moving is also more or less with the times and that is definitely not changing. The worst thing to do with change is deny that it’s happening and hold on too tightly to the past. Remember: the traditional art world is changing, but it may be for the better! Social media can help your art business, giving you access to wider audiences and easier sales. Embracing this new marketing tool and experiencing the wonders it can do for your presence. It is important to make a balance and fair choice of social engagement- it is a tool and not the end of it…it has to be used for the very purpose of your journey. Your work gets precedence over everything else, there are no shortcuts to

APRIL 2021 | 105

success. Your discipline, your work ethics, your talent cannot be compromised or discounted at the cost of social profiling. One needs to be visible as well in modern times, if you’re not willing to work around others and adapt to the surrounding you feel lost. I personally want to live in the moment and make it precious. Life should be lived in the best way that each one chooses. Visibility is important but needs to be projected wiselywhat and how much to project is an individual’s decision and the choice eventually determines the footprints of his journey. New media is redefining how the art world has moved from its traditional ways. New media art refers to artworks created with new media technologies, including digital art, computer graphics, computer animation, virtual art, Internet art and art as biotechnology. Creativity maybe hampered due to technology, however new ideas and media is a strong influencer if taken in a more affirmative, positive and curious way in terms of learning new ways to adapt. The internet allows us to expose ourselves easily to newer ideas and get acquainted with information and happenings across the globe at the click of a button. We can’t abandon the benefits and advantages of media and technology. A good blend of new and traditional media would be the ideal way to go forward. Change is integral for an individual’s freedom and in one’s journey it is not fair to judge and opine- what works for you may not have worked for someone else. However, we have to go forth bravely without fear and an open mind to accept change as it will energise our thoughts in search of learning new ways to adapt, improvise and create. APRIL 2021 | 106

/01 Tell me something about yourself. Growing up I was creative child who loved writing poetry, sketching and even wanted to be a fashion designer. I also loved helping people so a career in medicine seemed like the more promising choice. Armed with a degree in Biology and not wanting to step foot in a hospital (long story lol), I was left lost and confused as to what I would do with my life. When my brother and sister-in-law gave me the idea of starting a paint and sip business, something inside of me lit up and I can’t explain why but it felt like this was exactly what I needed to be doing. Without any art background or education, just a love and appreciation for art, I decided to pursue this crazy idea. Full of fear and not knowing what would come out of it, I purely went off an internal gut feeling that felt too good to shake off. This was the best decision I ever made!

Founder, Chicago Sip & Paint

/02 What’s your work day like? I don’t have the conventional work schedule, it’s actually quite opposite of most people’s but it works for me. My work day typically starts around noon and it goes into the evening, I love having that free time in the morning to myself without having to rush off to work. I’m still answering calls and some emails before getting to the studio but for the most part the morning is dedicated to myself. I usually start my work day by working on our Paint at Home Art Kit orders for the day; assembling, packaging and shipping them. I’m also booking private events, along with marketing, promotions and scheduling. The evening is when we typically have our classes so I’m either instructing them or working on some more behind the scenes things while one of our other instructors is leading the class. Currently I’m in the hiring process for a talented studio assistant which will hopefully ease my duties a bit and allow me to focus on more growth.

APRIL 2021 | 115

/03 Who are your biggest influences? From an artistic point it would have to be Frida Kahlo. I love how we are able to see her life through her art, how vulnerable she is with putting it all on display. How despite the difficult life that she had, her strength and resilience always prevailed and she never lost her authenticity. I admire that so much! My everyday heros and influences are my parents. They came to this county with absolutely nothing, working long hours at hard jobs trying to ensure a better life for me and my brother. The values they instilled in us and the love and care they gave us helped shape me into the person that I am today. We might not had much but what they provided was priceless. They continue to inspire me every day and mean the absolute world to me.

/04 How do you navigate the Art world? This year has been all about innovation and navigating in a whole new and unfamiliar territory. Before the pandemic, my business was solely based on in person events. When I had to close my doors, I knew it was time to adapt to the current situation and I needed to do it fast. Virtual events and Paint at Home Art Kits were the result of shifting to what the new consumer needs were while also making sure my business stayed afloat.

/05 What is your greatest strength as a business owner?

APRIL 2021 | 116

My greatest strength is my ability to genuinely connect with my customers. I love making them feel welcomed, comfortable and in good spirits while at my studio. From an Artist/instructors stance, it is especially important for me to ease them into the painting process, encouraging and cheering them on along the way. A blank canvas is intimidating to most people who might have not painted before, I am here to reassure them that they are in a safe place to express their creativity and make sure they have fun along the way. I deeply appreciate everyone that enters our door and want to ensure they walk away with a great experience.

/06 What does your perfect Sunday look like? I’m usually working on Sundays, the weekends tend to be the busiest for me work wise, so Monday is for me what Sunday is for most people lol. Monday is my self-care and relaxation day. Aside from doing my regular morning routine which involves journaling and meditation, I usually do an at home spa day which includes a facial, hair treatment and bubble bath. I am currently rereading “The Artist Way” book again and one of the main tasks is to take yourself on a solo date once a week. On Mondays I now incorporate that. I pick a new place every week, usually somewhere in nature and enjoy my own company.

/07 Tell us something about your business Chicago Sip & Paint. Over the years at Chicago Sip & Paint we have shared countless of special moments with our customers. The good times and memories that are created in the studio give me so much happiness. Now with the expansion of the at home Art Kits as well as Virtual Events, we are able to bring friends/families/ coworkers together from all over the country and sometimes different parts of the world. That’s pretty amazing! This past year might not have been an easy one for most people but my hope is that we have been able to provide a fun, creative outlet even if only for a couple of hours. I’m extremely grateful to have been able to transition in order to still be here doing what I love and what brings joy to so many people.

Hari & Sukhmani

/03 Your personal favourite lyrics and why? Old is gold, some of the folk song lyrics are so sweet and take you to a simpler time. Eg. “Baagay which aya karo, jado chann chann chup javay, tussi mukhda dikhaya karo”

Interviewed by Sukhmani Sadana

/01 The inspiration behind connecting the youth to forgotten folk music. Folk Music is basically good music that has percolated through the ages. To keep these songs alive is not only very inspiring, but also a responsibility in retrospect. Ours was an innocent collaboration between two different worlds. Hari brought his influences as an electronic music producer. My inspiration came from having trained in Hindustani classical vocal as well as my exposure to Sufi and Punjabi folk music from early childhood days. The idea from the very beginning was to stay true to the essence of the songs while using different mediums of musical expression, from guitars all the way to modular synthesizers.

/02 How do you both not enter the others musical space so beautifully in cohesion? The idea is to understand that the band is made of two individuals, each having their strengths. We have, over the years, played to those strengths, and help each other to grow as musicians. Hari has been inspired and encouraged to pursue his English vocals and overall stage performance whilst Sukhmani has a great ear for arrangements and melodies, which she now uses skilfully in her studio. The main idea though, is keeping in mind that the song drives the sound.

/04 Do you plan to diversify the music. Yes or no. Why yes or why no? We are always diversifying. Every track has some kind of collaboration, which involves a different sound and new energy, which makes each song different from the other and also helps us to evolve as musicians by learning from others. A lot of times, we are inspired by different genres of music, we have worked with dubstep, trip hop, rnb, house. Having said that, we would like to consider our music genre free : )

/05 On a lighter note, if you both ever decided on making your singles, who would be more successful and why? Haha, Hari would be a perfect ‘boy band’ candidate or even an English solo artist. We always laugh about that. As for Sukhmani, She would definitely be producing some world music : )

Sahithi divi

/01 Tell us something about yourself and your project impact scientist?

APRIL 2021 | 122

I am a rural innovator on a journey to explore stories about rural entrepreneurs by travelling across diverse villages ecosystems. I founded impact scientist that is a rural innovation influencing platform on a mission to empower rural India by bringing the stories of rural women entrepreneurs and social enterprises aligning with sustainable development goals of the United Nations. Rural economy has the power to drive India to it’s recovery.Looking at building a futuristic organisation that inspires people across the world by showcasing the journeys of disruptors from Indian rural ecosystem. India is a skill based economy and has rich rural resources which are untapped. Technology plays a big role in the growth of the future of our country. Irrespective of the economic status , every individual can be impacted through technology and digitisation. Cutting across the social challenges I am immensely learning through this journey and moving forward dreaming of successfully installing a gloriant beam of light on our villages where reverse innovation is churning into futurist growth if navigated with right resources and support systems from government, corporates , non governmental organisations and leaders.

/02 What is your writing process like? It is an organic process of exploring stories and discovering burnt edges in the striving stories, hence the writing process lightens and darkens through the flavor of the story that I am writing. My stories are just the reflections of how people held up to their dreams and created paths that did not exist. It is a mix of purpose, uncertainity , emotions and the uniqueness that a place , person and their story brings.

/03 If you had one month and a $50,000 budget to tackle any project, what would it be? Create a state of the art rural women entrepreneurship innovation lab connecting women from villages to connect with entrepreneurs for collabs and giving birth to powerful ideas. Bringing diversely skilled women together and leading a movement for innovation using villages is like a light house for economic empowerment of India.

/04 What is the first book that made you cry? A decade ago, When I underwent a major surgery with 17 broken bones my father gifted me a book called “ the monk who sold his ferrari ‘ . During my stay for five months in the hospital this was the book which truly made me believe that there is a deeper horizon for contemplating life. Also a book called The Spy by paulo coelho is one of the impactful books that I have read.

/06 What your perfect Sunday afternoon look like? I work on all days and I am very contented in my world. my mission overwhelms me with each passing moment. My joy and peace are subjected to meeting more people and discovering constant meaning from my key elements of women , village and ideas. After coming to Auroville definitely I am enjoying my sundays at the beach , take nature walks, indulge into poetry and cooking occasionally.

/07 What’s your future goal? /05 What does literary success look like to you? Even if a single person writes to me saying how relieved and powerful they feel. If my writing internally strengthens somebody it is my greatest happiness. Through writing I am finding myself mostly and healing while I create.

Dr. Rebecca Pinto

Our physiotherapy team has been contributing its share to societal change by using means of mass communication to educate my audiences about physiotherapy. While balancing my extensive work hours, our team also prepares and uploads funny yet relatable content on my social media. While my content has a humorous edge to it, it simultaneously informs people about why they should consider physiotherapy and the benefits of the same. As medical professionals, my team not only prioritizes my patients’ healthcare and physical rehabilitation but also tries and contribute to a better and well-informed society by debunking the stigma surrounding women’s

health and the effectiveness of physiotherapy. Rebecca and her team have not only changed the lives of those who were suffering from immobility and disability but also strived to bring change among netizens with their content. Often, we have received messages on social media from my audience, who say that after watching my content, they have had their perspectives completely turned around. The people who tried our simple exercises and followed the tips we shared on social media have experienced a drastic change in their pain levels. We, as a team, also try to dedicate our time towards spreading more awareness about certain women’s health issues which are often neglected. We believe that for a society to function at its highest potential, it is vital that everyone gets fair and equal treatment. In conclusion, while physiotherapy has just started to get recognition in the Indian medical sphere, our duty as medical professionals is to ensure that the common people stand a chance to truly witness a change in their lives, both in terms of physical mobility as well a broader outlook towards physiotherapy.

- Health and fitness editor

Physiotherapy is a science that helps improve movement dysfunction and promote functions of the human body and optimal health. It involves the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases and disabilities through physical means. As we know, a physiotherapist helps patients rehabilitate from a state of incapacity due to a genetic defect or the result of an accident or illness. Physiotherapists must have excellent interpersonal skills, including being empathetic, having patience, and understanding people.
