AWN…A New Beginning.

You’ve heard it since childhood but for the sake of persuasion and encouraging you, let me jog your memory once again. There’s light at the end of the tunnel, after darkness comes light, the sky is always darkest just before dawn and so on and so forth. There’s no guesswork here why this month’s issue termed ‘Dawn’. Well what better expression for 2021 but Dawn, a new beginning. Not that I wish to call 2020 ‘darkness’ but I think I’ll take the liberty to classify it as a fairly gloomy, shadowy year, can’t I? But all that’s done and dusted and here we are now, standing and staring at a new sky, clearing out at the break of dawn, displaying a promising sunrise that’s full of hope, change, is pink with positivity, fine with faith and like never before…with new beginnings.

What is it that you like more, acting or singing?

Q&A

In my opinion, acting and singing is an impersonation. I love how while acting I can wear a mask that will make me someone completely different. Singing triggers the deepest emotions in me, it allows me to show my heart.

How and when was it that you decided you wanted to be an actor? Even as a child, I loved the scene, I was everywhere. I felt most like myself when I could tell something to "the world". In high school, I decided that this is my biggest dream and I can't let it go. It was a difficult and long journey, but it was worth it. I am glad that I did not become a lawyer as planned.

JAN 2021 | 14

Can you tell us something about your family and the people you love? My family is the most important value in my life. My parents taught me how to be good and honest person above all. And, I cultivate it in myself. I know I can always count on them, in any situation. I give them all my heart. The same goes for friends. I'm lucky to be surrounded by only angels, because they are such good and decent people.

JAN 2021 | 15

When you were first offered 365, what was your initial reaction and thought?

I was very happy that I was noticed and I knew that I had a great opportunity to develop myself and I knew that it will be a huge challenge.

How do you feel now after the huge success of 365, the most trending film of 2020?

I am glad that this is a Polish film and that it was Polish filmmakers who showed themselves to a wider world, including me. It also made me realize how hard work is the key and everyone notices it.

JAN 2021 | 16

Are there any future projects we can expect? In 2021, we are entering the set of the second part of the film, I think there is a lot more ahead of me and I promise to surprise more than once.

What's your hidden talent or something special that no one knows about you? I sing and I will say immodestly that I am good at it. My dream is to record an album in French and English. I write texts to a drawer, hoping that someday I will be able to share them, I truly hope that I will dare to, one day.

How did your idea for the Elite CEOS business come about? When I turned 22 years old, that’s when I decided I wanted to leave school where I was studying petroleum engineering and go all in on building my business. I felt a natural place for me to start was in the fitness niche because I had played sports my whole life, done fitness modeling, and knew the in and out about nutrition. From 22-25 years of age, I really struggled to learn marketing and sales, but finally at 25, I had my breakthrough. After implementing things I learned through trial and error, I hit a million dollars in gross revenue doing online fitness coaching. Lots of trainers started to notice what I was doing and asked for my help because they wanted to replicate the success I was having. That business hit a million dollars gross revenue in 3 months, which led people outside the fitness industry to ask me for help too. That’s when Elite CEOS was born and has been running strong to this day. I never thought I would become a business consultant but it naturally progressed that way. People wanted to know how successful people achieve their success and so it was a very natural progression.

JAN 2021 | 21

How do you generate new ideas? There’s a few ways to go about this. The first and most obvious way is to simply watch what others are doing. As I see ads and posts on facebook; it gets my mind going on similar concepts that I can bring to my business and my market. The second way is my team. As you grow and surround yourself with people smarter than yourself you’ll want to lean on them for their guidance and ideas as they start becoming closer to the pulse of the business while you continue to become more and more removed. The third way comes from simply sitting and thinking. People will underrate the effect of sitting in silence with your thoughts and coming up with creative angles and ideas that will grow the business in ways not yet in motion.

JAN 2021 | 22

What piece of advice would you give to college graduates and others who want to become entrepreneurs? My natural inclination would be to say “just do it” but I feel I have a very high pain tolerance and can handle a lot more adversity than the average person. Firstly I’d say, if you can’t handle criticism, setbacks, and feeling depressed at certain moments, then entrepreneurship isn’t for you. People interview me now and ask about my story because of my recent success, but nobody cared when I was failing, living in bad apartments, and driving 17 year old cars. It is never easy to create a level of success unfamiliar to most people or the “top 1%” as they call it. Humans naturally put down others who are doing more than they are because otherwise they’d have to accept the fact that the only reason they aren’t successful is because they weren’t willing to do the work. Society will justify their situation with any excuse they have so that they don’t have to feel bad about not

accomplishing what someone else has. If you can handle all that on your way to success then, you should do it. Second would be to hire someone. Information is everywhere but it’s the execution on the proper information that matters. Simply googling how to start a business will leave you with hundreds of thousands of results, but with little to no direction. Most of the coaching I paid for was not the best it could’ve been but it had enough right pieces for me to guide myself to use the good parts and figure out the missing pieces. You will move much faster by simply hiring someone and following their instructions than trying to figure it all out on your own. In the end, the investment you have to pay is worth it. If you don’t have the money, figure it out and become resourceful. Finally I’d say you have to have a deep reason about why you want to make a lot of money. The materialistic things may drive you initially but they will never be enough to keep you going long term. Make sure you have a deeper reason for wanting to be successful other than just buying nice things, it won’t fulfill you in the end. The things I enjoy the most is using my money to do good for others.

JAN 2021 | 23

How many hours a day do you work on average? I typically will work from around 8 am to 7 pm after I’ve meditated, read, and hit the gym in the morning. Somedays, I will stop around 5 or 6 pm if I have a dinner or date planned, but other than that I’ll work because I enjoy it and there’s always a million things to be doing. One of my greatest strengths has been outworking most individuals.

JAN 2021 | 24

Do you believe there is some sort of pattern or formula to becoming a successful entrepreneur? I think so. It sounds cliche but the people who succeed simply never quit. The way I see, it is unless you have a real mental handicap, there is no reason to keep making the same mistakes over and over again. Everytime you make a mistake, that should bring you 1 step closer to your actual goal. All I did as I was trying to figure it out was listen to those I hired, made educated guesses around the things I didn’t know or weren’t working, and then adjusted until it all came together. I never made the same mistake twice because when something didn’t work I crossed it off and moved on. If you never give up and continue to use reason and logic it is very hard not to win. The people I see lose, simply can’t tolerate the feeling of loss and hopelessness that comes with a lack of success, and finally give up and give in.

i What is your take on beauty? Beauty isn’t just about aesthetics, but it’s identified with the personality of objects, creations, situations. Beauty is a message expressed by profound values that generate a feeling of wellness in a person and, more concretely, it’s born not only from inspiration, but experimentation on materials, pairing elements, and the know-how of artisans that test and perfect new solutions. Beauty offers the added value of significant content and a sensible feeling. With this idea of beauty, Vissionaire’s Beauty collection was born, inspired by the concept of art design that permeates through the brand’s creations with its unique creative language. It is a collection of 60 new product families — the result of 18 months of hard work. The collection has been created in collaboration with international designers from around the world who have a strong aptitude for materialistic experimentation. They are “Renaissance”-like personalities, with a commitment to realizing their creations with a futuristic vision. These designers include Draga&Aurel, Alessandro La Spada, Marc Ange (whose “Pavone” chair was revealed at Art Basel in Miami), Mauro Lipparini and Marco Piva.

Do you have any favorites from the beauty collection? The entire collection is very closed to my heart but there are a few pieces/ settings that stand out for their design. ‘The Osborne Boiserie’ by Mauro Lipparini is a sartorial interpretation of the wall that can be equipped and compatible with the various functions of the habitat: technology, functionality, aesthetics and aggregability, are some of the meanings of this project. It is a true expression of interior architecture. Osborne is a very performing second-skin wall, both in scenographic terms, aestheticstylistic signs of rich expression, and functional. It immediately stands out for its soft shapes, bold lines and furrows in the surface, tracing back to signs of tribal rites, marked on a dark, amber, deep and luminous skin. ‘The Bastian Bed’, another piece designed by Mauro Lipparini, was born from the expansion of the range of upholstered furniture (sofas, sectionals, armchairs, chaise-longues) which base their design on the “suspended elements” construction of armrests and backs with “envelope” processing

and metal friezes. Similarly, the headboard, generously sized and richly padded, is raised off the ground, and further lightened by a LED courtesy light that touches the floor, with soft touch ignition. Donovan by La Conca is a seating program with remarkably modular contemporary design. Available in the “square” version with squared armrests and the “roll” version with a cylindrical armrest. In the “square” model the modular sofa is arranged with double depth: an ample traditional seat and an ulterior space on the base behind the back, equipped with small bookcase modules clad in leather with shelves in metal and glass, and courtesy trays in marble with leather frames. The design is characterized by a wooden storage structure covered in quilted fabric with “cannettè” texture, which wraps and encloses the cushions, armrests and padded backs, giving a bivalent image, rigorous and welcoming at the same time. The combination of materials allows you to create elegant and dynamic architectures at the same time.

Is this the future for luxury? The future of luxury, is meta-luxury! You might be aware that Visionnaire is a meta luxury lifestyle brand. I like to remind people that the definition of meta-luxury was suggested to me by students at Stanford University completing their thesis, and who had identified us as a meta-luxury brand/ company. It is an expression that entails a more widespread corporate culture found in Northern Europe, but much less so in the South. Meta-Luxury is meant to indicate that the value of a product isn’t merely connected to its external aspect, but is linked to the essence of the people that surround them, who will increasingly desire to wear, use, and obtain objects that express their being, more than what they have. Meta-luxury also expresses a sense of justice: those who exploit people in the workplace should be penalized, those who don’t respect the environment and don’t align with principles of sustainability while behaving in environmentally irresponsible ways, shouldn’t be associated to certain values. In other words, meta-luxury manifests the new meaning of luxury, which surpasses the concept of just possessing prized goods, focusing on objects that carry values, and that can recount a story while standing the test of time. The Decàlogo, the book with which we celebrated 60 years of the company and 15 of the brand last year, declares our 10 corporate values through this perspective

There’s a different name for each piece that you design , how do you name them ? We name the products usually by connecting them to the mood board from which they were inspired and for which they were designed by the designers. My role is precisely to give a series of photographic textual video suggestions that inspire and direct the designers up to the coherence of the creative process, to the name aligned with its concept and final product.

How did you decide to collaborate with Marc Ange for the Il Pavone capsule collection? Over the years, we have met many artists and designers with stimulating ideas and we expanded our artistic offerings by going beyond the purely decorative sphere. We developed the first art design project with Alessandro La Spada in 2016, “Sandrino’s butcher” which was showcased at Harrod’s London in 2017. Last December, we brought a structured project to design Miami and Art Basel together with Marc Ange, an iconic line of chairs with the named Pavone, that celebrates the romantic and seductive beauty of this animal, the only one in nature that does not have defense weapons for its survival, that uses only the moving beauty of its

plumage in the face of danger. The Pavone Throne, a unique piece of 3 editions and the Pavone armchairs in the pret a porter version, are still getting incredible media attention and great reactions from clients. It made me understand that I was on the right path! We presented the Pavone chairs at our Miami showroom with a tropical installation together with Marc Ange- title the Garden of Beauty to convey the designer’s delicate message. A convinced message of hope that deep and uncompromising beauty will save the world. I’m truly glad to share that The PAVONE designed by Marc Ange for Visionnaire has conquered the jury for its concept and design and was declared the Winner of the prestigious 2020 Archiproducts Design Awards in the furniture category.

What made to pursue a career in entertainment ?

I just know that I set out to pursue a career in music and to be an artist. I think the entertainment part came in much later for me. My focus has always been in my art form and to immerse myself in myself in it. To share my music with the world. As a child, music was my way of expressing feelings, travelling the world. Music was my solace. It has always been there for me. This made me decide to pursue a career in it, study it in depth. The rush of emotions it brings with every lyric and melody. It's beautiful to see the power it holds in a person's life. I write and make my my music for the that very reason. To see what feeling it can invoke in somone is just amazing.

Which has been the best performance in your career so far? Definitely this album, which is free. The nature and type of of the recording was completely different this time. The whole album was recorded live, on one microphone, in an abandoned church in Brooklyn. So, when you record something like this, there's very little room for error. There is no way to edit or fix anything in post production. So, no effects were added on or edited. It is completely raw and organic. It requires you to dive in deep into a vulnerable place. Just really focus on the pure joy of music and let it all go. Taking in all the elements around and channeling them into your art. It was all very different from anything I had ever done.

JAN 2021 | 39

What motivates you the most about your profession as an athlete? Well, I really like pushing my own personal boundaries. I like redefining them, breaking my own limits. For me, I think what motivates me the most is to constantly prove myself wrong. To push through the hard times and not give up. It's like discovering a new version of myself everytime. It’s the journey that motivates me. The beautiful experience of breaking down and getting back up; powering through with my mind. It's that part of mind that motivates me to get to the finish line.

What is the biggest dream in your life? My biggest dream would be to share my music with the entire world, just like I am. I want to use my music to be able to create change in the world. I want to use my music to help people. I want my music to reach every person in the world and be a part of their journey.

No matter what your skin type is, a daily skin care routine can help you maintain overall skin health and improve specific concerns like acne, scarring, and dark spots. A daily skin care routine has four basic steps you can do once in the morning and once before you sleep.

2.Mask at Least Once a Week

Since vitamin C can be irritating for some complexions, limit use to once or twice a week.

3.Wash Your Face Every Night

Make washing your face a priority every evening, even if you're traveling or coming home late , washing your face twice a day with a mild cleanser can help your skin drastically. .

4.Start Incorporating Essences Into Your Routine

Essences are to skincare what primers are to makeup they are known for delivering serious hydration. “FIRST COMES CLEANSING, THEN A TONER, THEN AN ESSENCE. FOLLOW THAT WITH YOUR SERUMS, AND THEN SEAL IT ALL IN WITH AN EYE CREAM AND A MOISTURIZER.

And yes ! Try to do something you enjoy every day.

VHC opens with a special art show, ‘Origins of a Perennial Bouquet’ curated by the celebrated artist and curator, Bose Krishnamachari on December 16th. The show has works from five of India’s noteworthy names from the world of Indian contemporary art, namely: Benitha Perciyal, Manish Nai, Sudarshan Shetty, Sumedh Rajendran and Tanya Goel. This diverse array of artists represents VHC’s credo to exhibit artworks from reputed and immensely promising artists from all over India and the globe.

“Pune as a city has given me so much and now that I live here, I thought, what better way to give back to the city than to facilitate a platform for contemporary visual art and create a special culinary experience in a space that represents the beautiful Koregaon Park landscape that I love. There is an abundance of great art and art lovers in Pune and we want this to be a space of expression, conversation and thought, with a tastefully curated selection of food and drinks for the city and our guests from all over the world. In the coming year professionally, I am looking forward to establishing VHC and realizing it’s potential, sharing art, inspiration and interesting conversations and collaborations. Personally, since I just got married during lockdown without our families and loved ones by our side, I am looking forward to the possibility of spending time with them in person and sharing love and laughter. Happy 2021, Happy New Beginnings!” says Vida Heydari.

He was Artistic Director and Co-Curator of India’s first Biennale – The Kochi-Muziris Biennale 2012, Director of Kochi-Muziris Biennale 2014, 2016, 2018 and 2020. He was a columnist, ‘Everyone is a Camera’ for The Week magazine for 3 years. Bose is known for his patronage towards young Indian artists and is also an educator. Born in Kerala in 1963, Bose recently completed his MFA from Goldsmiths College, University of London. His work, thus reinforced by a `here and now` understanding and awareness of contemporary culture, borrows effortlessly from various disciplines, including literature and design, and time periods.

Interestingly, Bose pays as much attention to form as he does to conceptual and/or contextual concerns. Startling planes of flat color juxtaposed against skilful, almost photographic, representations of identifiable persona, imbue the work with an `international` sensibility. Bose admits to combining western image-making techniques (such as the installation) with the vernacular, in a bid to arrive at an idiom that is entirely contemporary and brisk.

In an earlier interview, he said: “I refine my color to brightness. I have learnt this usage from the alternately subdued and lavish color codes of Indian ceremonies and ritual performances; the costumes, the gestures of enactment... The current body however, brings with it a whiff of minimalism. There is little room for excess. But the minimalism is effective.

Shalini Passi

JAN 2021 | 104

Shalini Passi is the founder of The Shalini Passi Art Foundation & MASH. She is a Delhi-based art collector, artist, and philanthropist, who sits on the Advisory Board of Khoj Studios since 2012, and serves as a longstanding Patron of FICA (Foundation for Indian Contemporary Art) and the Kochi-Muziris Biennale. Her collection includes some of the most coveted names in contemporary art, including Bharti Kher, Anita Dube, Sheba Chhachhi, Zarina Hashmi, and Atul Dodiya, alongside significant international artists such as Jeff Koons and Damian Hirst and Indian modernist masters, such as M.F. Husain, Manjit Bawa, and Ram Kumar. Shalini’s passion for art and design is evident in her vast collection of furniture, tapestries,

and rare antiques, which are juxtaposed with cuttingedge contemporary design, including important pieces by Ron Arad, Vladimir Kagan, and Herve Van Der Straeten. Located within Shalini’s Delhi home, which has been featured in prominent publications such as Wallpaper, Architectural Digest, and Larry’s List, the collection evokes and celebrates a powerful individual narrative that speaks of Shalini’s connection with each piece, each history, and each artist.

JAN 2021 | 105

As a patron and collector, Shalini actively supports emerging artists, and fosters arts education through the Foundation’s year-round programming. She is regularly invited to speak prominent art and design events, and most recently gave a talk at India Art Fair 2019 and moderated a panel discussion at India Design ID 2019.2020 has taught me to be grateful, empathetic, kind, to listen, to love more, to live in the moment and above all to cherish the people that I have in my life. It has reinforced my beliefs in team work and has helped me understand the strength of togetherness. Absence of physical spaces has opened the portal of digital communication and has broadened the outreach. Today, we have found ourselves resorting to virtual platforms as our hope, our future to connect and communicate. 2021 is only a few sunrises away, and we await here in hope of a new beginning and light. I look forward to more productivity, positivity, cooperations, good health, reinvent, reuse and recycle. In the coming year I wish to continue with more collaborations, achieving my goals, and empowering the bandwidth of art and culture.

Anita Dube’s installation “The Theatre of Sade’’ is a very provocative and powerful work. It was conceptualised and executed in 1998-99. This Installation is one of my favourite pieces from the collection. The work comprises different readymade objects such as dentures or books covered in black velvet. It depicts the loss and rebirth of the individual and society as a whole, and the common experiences in human life, including: morality, desire, pain, and joy. The work talks about emotional cruelty in an extremely sophisticated way. One of the objects in the installation is a small yet most powerful ‘Hand of sage’ that controls everything. According to the artist, putting black velvet on the locally found objects transforms the identity of them and erases the objects’ intellectuality and brings out their sensibility, thus encouraging the audience to approach these strange yet familiar objects with an uncommon perspective.

I’m a person who lives in the moment and plans for now and the immediate future, I’ve enjoyed the process of creating art through my journey. I learn something new each day and take action as I carry forward my work. It keeps me engaged holistically. Ideally, I want to see my work gain more exposure & reach a larger global audience. I’m fortunate to have my work received really well all through. The one thing that I’ve been wanting to achieve artistically is to work on my 3-dimensional art by increasing its form in larger sculptural magnitude to give it a feeling of vastness. I personally feel there is a lot for me to experiment with, as I have this constant urge for creativity and as long as the spirit doesn't die and I keep up with my motivated soul, I hope to reinvent my mind in the most promising way to keep up with my own expectations. 2021 seems to be a very

The only thing I have to go on right now are memories of these experiences. Yet it's wondrous to have a heightened appreciation of everything out there, and for that, I relish in gratitude. COVID-19 is bringing about a whole set of new challenges in every possible realm; the art industry is one of them. Given the rapidly evolving situation around the pandemic is changing how we live and work in ways we would not have thought before and I’m only too happy to embrace and looking forward to a brighter year ahead.

We have to leave behind the pandemic year and try to forget all the trauma, pains, and sufferings we had to face. Things have already started looking better for a professional like me and that’s a very positive sign. This pandemic has boosted the idea of “Atmavibhan Bharat” as imports have become difficult and time consuming. I am as an architect look forward to support and get support from the Indian manufacturing sector in the building and interior industry. And that’s a matter of pride.
