They say behind every great man is a woman. But behind every great woman, is another great woman. Thankfully to education, women have become self sufficient and are no longer dependent on men to lead their lives. As an ideology for me, woman empowerment and equality is not just a fundamental human right. It’s equally important to achieve a balanced and peaceful society around us. Gone are the days when the purpose or objective of a woman in the societya was to just cook, raise children and feed their husbands. The beauty of a women has always been that she is versatile and malleable, so much so that she could do all the above with all her might, and yet be the one paying the bills for the same. Fortunately things have gotten enhanced for women, being it better education to lesser-forced marriages, to more leadership positions, and favorable laws being reformed. And so women, now more than ever, are showcasing what they are really capable of.
And so this month, in our special Women’s Day Issue, Face Magazine wishes to throw light on such ladies who’ve made a difference in our society. Their journeys are not any harder than those we didn’t feature in our monthly spotlight; just handpicked amongst many whom we aspire to mention, perhaps in the near future. Here’s to all the strong women out there. Maybe we know them. May we be them. May we raise them. MARCH 2022

Big Boss for me was a huge learning experience. It was a once in a lifetime experience. Throughout the tenure a lot of challenges were thrown our way and the show taught us how to deal with them, in turn teaching us how to deal with real life challenges. This was one of my major take backs from the show. Big Boss for me was the start of a beautiful journey. The lines said by you inside the house – “such a boring day, such a boring people” took the internet by storm. How did you feel when so many memes were being made on it and big stars like Shilpa Shetty Kundra made reels on it? I absolutely love it when people make videos on my dialogue. There was a time when I used to think that my accent and the way I speak is one of my weaknesses but today I feel it has become my strength. Initially, a lot of people made fun of the way I spoke but then slowly it became something that entertained everyone. The lesson I have learnt is that change is the only constant. You seem to share great camaraderie with actor Salman Khan… any plans of working with him on the big screen in the future?
Your fans are very excited to see what you do next… so what’s on the cards? Yes, fans stay super enthusiastic and I feel fortunate that my fans look forward to my upcoming projects. Most of the time I don't share about my ongoing projects because we are not allowed to reveal the project before it goes public and as soon as the project is done, people MARCH 2022

Yes, I have already shared the screen with Salman sir on Bigg Boss and it felt incredible to do that especially because he always appreciated me. We connected and vibed beautifully. As far as sharing the big screen is concerned, the best person to answer that would be Salman Sir himself. Iam absolutely ready if such an opportunity comes my way but only Salman Sir would be able to give a definitive answer to this.

automatically get to know about it. I am usually as excited as my fans are for my work. Also, I believe in being involved in the present rather than the future. ‘SidNaaz’ is and will forever be everyone’s favourite jodi. The whole nation was in shock upon loosing Sidharth Shukla. How did you deal with this devastating incident? For people #Sidnaaz was just a hashtag, their favourite jodi, but for me, it was a life that I lived and experienced and it will stay with me forever. A big thank you to the audience who loved our pairing together and the hashtag as well. But for me it was not just a hashtag, it was my everything. It was a beautiful memory and part of my life which will always stay with me
wherever I go and whatever I do. Whether it is trolling, or renumeration or just the pressure to look a certain way…would you agree that it’s tougher being a woman in showbiz? As far as trolling goes, I've always chosen not to get affected or bothered by it. One of the best qualities I see in myself is that I am strong enough to adhere to what I decide. I am extremely satisfied and a happy soul with the life I am living because I know how much hard work I am putting in and how much I have to put in while I move forward. People who like my work support me and those who don’t, it's their choice and I respect it. Everyone has the right to like or dislike someone.
I feel whether it's men or women, each individual has their own journey. Any situation can be tough or not. It all depends on the mindset and how one decides to deal with it. Sometimes we make it tougher for ourselves. I feel we should know how to tackle a difficult situation with peace and try to be strong to cope. Bottom line is that one should know how to deal with life, be it a man or a woman.

We have to begin by asking about your risqué outing – Sexaholic. It’s not only off beat but also a dangerous territory for any actor to step into…You of course pulled it off very well! How did the film happen and how did you prepare for the role?
Yeah that was a long time ago & yes that was risqué indeed but in life, I’ve learned that if you don’t take risks you’ll never grow in any area. I wanted to grow and explore since I had a very open mindset after I got out of depression and bipolar disorder and at that time I was in that zone when all I wanted to do was break free and I wanted to explore the risqué side of me as in the past I’d always played roles that were the girl next door or lovey-dovey and in a safe zone. I got famous for that and got labelled as the girl next door. I feel that in this industry, actors are seen as having finite potential and not many people can look at an artist and think that if they’re pulling off this role well maybe they could also pull off the other role. The thinking of producers and directors is more open now. The way the actors are looked at a lot of times in the industry as being capable of only playing a certain kind of role well as they might have done so in the past. So after _yeh meri life hai_ I was offered all similar kinds of roles. So when _Sexaholic_ came into the picture, even though I was not mentally conditioned to accept it completely with the director who was my friend at the time, how could you even think of offering me a role like that? He said no you have to look beyond it, I need an actor who can really pull it off. He was after me for a couple of days and finally, he convinced me. So I evaluated everything and came to a conclusion that maybe it was for the best and there was no doubt in my mind that I could pull this off. So I guess if you put your heart and soul into something it's bound to be successful.

Your body of work is long and impressive. But we are led to believe that Amir Khan starrer ‘Mann’ has always been special. Would you like to share some memories from it? It was surely a lot of fun and learning. Aamir has always been one of my favourite actors and I felt really lucky to have gotten a chance to work with him at such an early stage in my career. It was a big starstruck moment for me as I was really young and new and I had gotten to work with such big people and I got to learn a lot from them. The fun memories were when we were shooting for the movie in Thailand on the cruise. Aamir made me really comfortable and played games with me everyday so I don’t have any inhibitions. I guess he could see my nervousness. He would always win and pulled pranks on the set, made funny faces in pictures with the fans. He was a great support and helped me a lot.
That Ais true because when you have the ability to influence people, it is a great responsibility, it awakens you to live your life Amore consciously. That does not mean you can’t do Awhat you want or be someone you are not but you need to be aware of what you do in public as your actions are always going to be assessed and judged and followed by lots of people at the same time so you need to be extremely cautious and aware of what you do in public. As humans though I feel it is wrong to put unwise judgements on people and pass rude comments. And sometimes The people who compliment you can sometimes do so only superficially as they might be star struck. They may have no real idea about you. So you must figure out who you are & what you want to be known as and take that responsibility and then stick to yourself. Because when you are truly you, then it's beautiful and the most powerful thing ever. And then you don’t have to bother about who’s going to think what, because you are just flowing and flying just like you. So if you ask me my only responsibility is to be honestly and truly me. Because that is the conscious, aware, full of loving me, hence the responsible me. My joy comes from loving everything and everyone around me truly and being the person and actor or superstar I was meant to be.

Your Profile on Instagram says you're a ‘Mental Health Advocate’. What prompted you to take up this cause? I have been through depression and bipolar myself. I had travelled the world and never heard of these words, and when I did I couldn’t come to terms with the fact that these mental illnesses exist in this world and many humans suffer from it but at that time I hadn’t heard about it at all. We are hardwired to think that trauma only means physical and we forget that physical trauma can also cause mental and emotional trauma and then the trauma of everyday incidents of life that we never speak about. I never knew it that well until I went through it myself. I too tried to commit suicide but my family and friends saved me in time and it took me 5 years to heal from it and appreciate life again. I didn’t think I could be happy again ever. . I realised that hope is what really matters to us, the desires of life are what keeps us alive and going, if you lose that you lose everything. And when I saw that people didn’t know all this even though the therapists are really packed with patients for months, I was surprised why nobody speaks about it. I wanted to remove the taboo associated with it. When I healed myself, I wanted to heal the world too. It came so strong and so naturally. Even though more and more people in prominent spaces are talking about it, do you think in a country like India ‘Mental Health’ is still not taken as seriously as it should be? What in your opinion can be done differently?
37
FACE MAGAZINE
A lot of people are suffering because they are suffering in their heads and are not able to express that energy. They don’t even know that physical illnesses are a result of mental traumas too. It's really important for us all to talk about these things which are essential to our existence such as who we are, what makes us, us and so on. We need to become the open beings that we are meant to be as with a closed mindset we can never heal. There’s so much to learn and observe. The more we listen and talk about it the better we’ll become. So I urge everyone to talk about it. And support each other. Be there for each other in-depth and in fun. Not just superficially but in depth be intimate with each other. Trust, love and support each other. Every year on the 8th of March, the world celebrates “Women’s day”. In today's times is the concept still relevant? It is sad to me that we need a day to celebrate women. They need to be celebrated everyday. We as humans need to be celebrated for the things that we go Through, for the battles we fight everyday inside and out and coming out of them and being courageous to live a life don’t you think all that needs to be celebrated? We should rather celebrate humans for the humans we are, our existence and our presence on this planet. We need to remind ourselves that we are loved, we are worthy to be celebrated. Each day needs to be celebrated and that is most important to me.

Yes, it is. What these filters and social media are doing is creating this image of us that’s not real and now a lot of people don’t like toA look at their real selves like all kinds of beautiful things like cellulites, scars, wrinkles and lines. We are being taught to not look at our real selves. I see a lot of people do that and I feel it takes effort to love yourself with all scars and marks and everything. Today I don’t want to take a bit away from me because I love me the way I am and I urge people to love their personality, their auras, not just their looks. I urge them to see beyond their outer layers and really see them as who and what they really are meant to be. Because that is something. When people ask me why I am glowing, I tell them it's because I love myself. I love myself with all the imperfections. And That takes a lot of work, a lot of meditations sometimes as the everyday conditioning is at play at all times. So keep yourself away from this fake world as much as you can and see life for what it is without a filter.
You have played several characters of that of a ‘simple girl next door, and you have often said in your interviews that it wasn’t smooth sailing always for you as you are someone who believes in sticking to her principles. What kind of struggles did you face? When you choose to be a human full of truth it can be challenging as the world is not trained to be like that. It is your choice to be true to yourself and that takes hard work. To want to be someone who people can rely on has to be a conscious effort and choice. You end up losingAA work sometimes as not everyone likes your way. It can be very intimidating for a lot of people but you always find your tribe. They come for you from every corner of the world. They come to love you and support you and remind you that you are loved beyond measure and you are definitely not alone.

Combining contemporary art and design with historic architecture is no mean feat… where do you draw your inspiration from? Inspiration can be everywhere, however, you have to be prepared to grasp it. I always like to say that I have to be like a “radar”, an “antenna” , always careful to take new creative inputs coming from the world of art, fashion and design itself. For this reason, it is very important to always be constantly updated, to be curious by nature and take time to nurture important relationships. The inspirations come to me also from the daily life and things that surround me. Can be a movie I recently saw, a book, an experience, a trip in which I came closely in contact with nature and to be open-minded as much as you can to absorb it all. How did you come up with the concept of “Visionnaire”?
Since the very beginning, the brand has formulated a distinctive style, based on lively experimentation on materials, volumes of unexpected poise and inimitable motifs that reveal the totally Italian background of the company. Our brand bases its activity on the value of knowledge and continuing research on the concept of contemporary beauty, confirming its exceptional ability to create design projects and products of outstanding sartorial workmanship, fostering and restoring value to the skills of local artisans: mixing and matching materials, finding new compositional and material solutions, defining the identity of every single product by making it unique and inimitable, though also ready for reproduction. Visionnaire is today a meta-luxury brand and this definition revolves around four main concepts which are defined in: History: the longevity of a brand and its ability to pass on the heritage of knowledge over the generations. Craftsmanship: it refers on one hand to the infusion of unique personal competencies and passion into the creation of unique items, on the other to these items not being the result of a standardized production but of an authentic labor of love and judgment. Rarity: the result of the creation of unique manufacts, which will stand in time as achievements that will never be replicated. Focus: it embodies the quest for depth rather than breadth, driving the pursuit of excellence. These are all the stars that make up our universe. You run a business empire so successfully… How do you maintain a work-life balance? It is extremely difficult but I try to maintain some balance in order to give my best in my daily work. I nourish my mind and body as much as possible through the activities that I enjoy the most, for instance by doing yoga almost every day.

Last December, IPE-Visionnaire became a BenefitA Company, defining its business approach as Aone ofA promotion of positive values for the community. Benefit companies are for-profit organizations, but also have the objective of bringing shared benefits to the ecosystem of which they are a part and in which they operate, guiding and driving innovation through their activities. MEET THE FACES
We believe congratulations are in order for being recognized as one of the top 10 breakout stars of 2021 on IMDB! You started acting at the young age of 5!! How has the journey been so far? The journey has been great because it began at a very young age. I don’t remember not being an actor or a day when I am not acting. I had a very interesting childhood and a very distinct life. I grew up working with some really interesting people and have had a lot of good experiences and learnings from different kinds of people, projects, and experiences. It has completely shaped me into the person I am today and I love that. I don’t think I would have enjoyed a life where I was not an actor. So yeah, the journey has been fruitful, and I am looking forward to a lot of newer experiences, people, and projects. And yeah, so far it has been awesome. You played Sushmita Sen’s son in Vastu Shastra and Shah Rukh Khan’s son in Kabhi Alvida na Kehna…in fact, you were cast as a young boy more than a girl… Can you share any fun incidents about that phase with our readers? The first time I auditioned for "Vaastu Shastra" I was dressed up as a girl because that’s who I am and they liked my audition but they wanted a boy for the role because the script was already written and that’s how the storyline was plotted. They were hunting for a boy but after seeing my audition they genuinely wanted me for the role so they convinced my mom, and since I was just 4 years old, my mom didn't give it much of a thought and agreed for the role. So, that’s how my journey in playing the role of a boy began. It’s been fun but I feel all credit goes to my mom because there were never any reservations from my side to play a boy. After all, I always knew that it was just acting and I was a boy or dressed like a boy only in front of the camera and not in real life. And honestly, even if there were incidences, I
61
don’t remember cause I was a kid but yeah there are people who still get shocked when they come to know that I am the same actor who played the boy from “Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna” or “Vaastu Shastra” and sometimes, I just bring it up on purpose to see their reactions for entertainment cause they enjoy it and I feel it’s one of the best things haha. You have a very impressive work portfolio… you have done mainstream cinema, television, webs series and are also a content creator on social media. Do you think today the pressure to be omnipresent across all platforms is real? There’s no pressure to be omnipresent. It is something that just happened on its own. I feel extremely lucky to be a part of each and every platform and to be able to do TV and Reality shows and web series and movies. It just happened by chance, it was never planned. I don’t think I’ve planned to go back to TV or planned to go for a reality show soon, I want to get into films and want to keep doing web series so there’s no pressure to be omnipresent but it’s fun to be able to do everything but it’s not important or necessary to have an experience or to be able to do all these things. For me, it just happened by chance and I am really lucky but yeah, that’s it, doing good work and good projects is important for an actor and to be able to play different kinds of challenging roles is my goal right now. To step out of the comedy or drama zone is something that I want to do along with getting back into films for sure. Your video from the Kota factory on menstruation caught a lot of attention. Somewhere it was not just good acting but also a belief that made it stand out. Do you think women are still fighting the inherent patriarchy in our ecosystem and feel the need to still constantly prove themselves, in spite of being in the 21st century?
FACE MAGAZINE
I think people have come a long way when it comes to giving women attention, respect, and equality in general. They talk more about them and women are more aware and talk about themselves and stand up for themselves definitely more than before but we still have a long way to go.
For example, in the Kota factory, I was the first one or even in the whole IIT universe, I think it’s the first time we speak about women. But, we forget. Every time we talk about IIT, we think that those men/ boys who are doing it.... but we often forget that there also are women sitting for the exam and we hardly see the challenges they go through and I think menstruation was MARCH 2022

one of the problems that we talked about in the show and I am sure there would be so many more problems than girls go through when they are doing IIT or anything for that matter of fact. So, we still have a long way to go and we still need to fill the little voids where we forget about women and their sufferings. But, we are getting there and I think that the change has obviously begun and am still hoping for more. So, let’s see how that goes. You said in one interview that people have the freedom to say whatever they want online and that you on average block 10 people every day. Do you think when it comes to trolling, people are harder on women content creators vis-à-vis male content creators? Yes, I feel like people have such a big power to say anything to anyone. They have the power of ruining someone’s day or making somebody’s day. Especially when you have so many followers, you have so many people who have different kinds of opinions and judgments about you but when it comes to trolling women, I don’t think that it’s just the women who are being targeted but I also know and have seen male content creators being trolled and judged and made fun of a lot. So, I don't think people see gender before saying anything mean about somebody. They just say it if they feel like it. Gender has never been a problem for them. The fact that they have so much power of ruining somebody’s day or just saying anything that they want to and getting away with it is the issue here, but yeah, everybody gets judged in their ways so, I don’t think gender is an issue at this point. I have seen content creators who are men, being trolled so badly. So, I think it’s genderneutral when it comes to giving hate. You have the experience of a little short of two decades behind you already. Do you think today, in this glamorous yet highpressure space of acting, it’s easier to get
63
FACE MAGAZINE
noticed than to survive and succeed? Honestly, right now, I think people are getting more opportunities because of OTT coming into the picture. More shows and stories are being told so, not just actors but even content creators, directors and writers are getting an opportunity to tell their stories and make shows and stuff like that. About getting noticed, I think social media has become a major part of our lives and it is so accessible to everybody that the reels, little short videos, and other things on social media get people noticed easily and that's also a good thing but it has its disadvantages for sure. So, the entertainment range has grown wider and actors are getting more noticed. You don’t even have to be an actor, even being a content creator gets you noticed and gets a lot of opportunities. So, it's not just about actors but, influencers, bloggers, content creators are also getting very good reach and chances of getting famous have increased because of social media being so accessible, for them also. There could be disadvantages as well. But being positive right now, I would say that it’s a good thing that people are getting an opportunity and I would also say that it’s slightly easier to get famous, which also is a good thing.

MEET THE FACES
It’s believed that what makes your food different from the others is that it tastes like it's cooked at home and yet the presentation is very contemporary. How do you achieve this precarious balance? The food that I create is based on memories of experiences, dishes, ingredients and techniques from growing up in a North Indian family, to living in Assam and travelling across the North East of India. That combined with a mix of my travels and collaborations with some of the best chefs across the world is how it comes together as a whole. They say your kitchen is a battleground? Can you please elaborate? Not just mine! Every kitchen is a battleground. The job has always been considered one that is tough, needing long hours and a firm grip of your team. The greatest evolution has been Chefdriven restaurants and chefs being celebrated, versus being behind walls when I started out. There are more literate and knowledgeable individuals taking up cooking out of passion and chefs are now conscious of the environment they create in a kitchen. This has resulted in better treatment of the team, a fair opportunity to perform and training by the head chefs. You created India’s first and only gas-free restaurant. Tell our readers more about that? I did a food promotion with the granddaughter of Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala while I was at the
69
FACE MAGAZINE
Taj, and she shared her family heirloom recipes with me. At the end of the promotion, she told me how much better and different the dishes would taste if they were cooked on charcoal in a heavy-bottomed pot. We spoke about how her grandfather was the most flamboyant and extravagant maharaja India has ever seen. He would always move with an entourage of 180 people with him, and with them, would travel his pots and pans. All the stories that she told me, just reinforced something that I already believed in. I knew that for my next restaurant, I would go gas-free and cook on charcoal and wood fire, and use ancient cooking techniques. I then decided to launch the first gas-free restaurant in the country which was one of my biggest challenges in 20 years. We had to figure out at what temperature to cook since none of the equipment has any regulators on it. When you practice ancient cooking techniques, it’s a lot about the organic feel of the food. I had to find seasoned cooks who knew food inside and out. Prep was longer, and it was very difficult to run a busy lunch or dinner service at the start. But we then had it all figured out.

I was extremely excited to be among the top 24 chefs from across the world battling it out on The Final Table. Post the show, I really felt good about what I was doing. I have a great foundation and knew that it’s something I had to continue to build on. I’ve always watched cooking competitions and wondered how contestants manage to mess up when they have a whole 60 minutes to dish out something. But at that point, you’re under so much pressure that it has to be instinctive. There are numerous thoughts running through your mind, you tend to make tons of mistakes, and those 60 minutes that you get feel like 6 minutes at the end of it. The pandemic turned every one into a chef… but I am curious to know what a Chef like you does to keep herself busy during those tough times. Yes, it surely did which is amazing because a substantial amount of people learned then and have continued to do so ever since. The complexity of the pandemic made us break preconceived notions of what should be done and how things should function. Chefs, restaurateurs and their teams have faced a number of unprecedented challenges from the beginning of 2020 and sustain the lifeline of the hospitality industry, not only in the country but across the entire world. The delivery and takeout format is one that is set to stay, and I honestly felt like launching and

working towards growing it during this period would be ideal which is why I launched Ammu, which is designed to satisfy those comfort Indian cravings and be the one-stop for ordering Indian cuisine. I also launched a handcrafted mithai brand named Barfi & Sons that is now only taking pre-orders. Apart from these two, I have a couple of brands conceptualized and waiting to be announced. In addition to these delivery/ over the counter format brands, I set up Bliss Food Experiences which is an exclusive chefdriven catering brand that intends to make the food as memorable as the occasion, whether you’re hosting a wedding, a private function, or a high profile corporate event. Planning everything from canapés and personally curated food counters through to a themed multi-course banquet-style sit-down, Bliss Food Experiences mixes culinary traditions and cutting edge cooking techniques with impeccable service.
Anything that is traditional, elaborate or skill sensitive has been my driving force. I have a great foundation in ethnic Indian food, and it’s something I really believe in. I’ve now kind of made it my mission to make others believe in, and understand Indian cuisine better. The age-old techniques, equipment, ingredients and intensive hard work are what make it all happen. Working towards this has not only helped me inspire others but has helped me garner a great amount of inspiration. MARCH 2022

Gianni Versace once said, “Don’t be into trends. Don’t make fashion own you. You decide what you are, what you want to express by the way you dress and the way you live.” And he’s right, trends should never inform your entire style, but at their best, they are a window into the zeitgeist. They reflect the bigger story that is unfolding in our worlds. The lens with which an average person looks at the world is often clouded with biases. Be it religion, caste, community-based, or gender roles. We need a fresh pair of glasses as we enter 2022, we can no more have blurred visions or minds. The communities which were shoved, oppressed, and closeted are now all out and geared up to rule the World winning back their place in the society and ascending victorious into a gender fluid era. One of the most mighty, significant, and influential voices in the LGBTQIA+ community in India right now is Sushant Digvikar aka Rani Ko-HE-Nur the iconic Drag Queen. They have represented
India in an international singing competition for drag performers Queen of the Universe 2021. The sassy Queen is an empathetic yet audacious, sensual yet fierce, yin yet yang of a human, who uses her voice as a weapon (against inequity) and a tool (mesmerizing millions of her unbound talent). You can’t ignore this powerhouse, rather hear her out lending both ears because she is adamantly changing the stale narrative on how we as a society perceive Transgenders and carelessly devoid them from their minimal basic rights of coexisting in peace and thriving into a well-supported community.

The Art Living On & HENNA IS ONE OF THE TRADITIONAL AND SACRED ARTS HEALING OUR BODIES AND HAS BEEN THE PRIME MEDIUM OF WOMEN’S EXPRESSION. MEDINA TREVATHAN BREATHES BACK LIFE AND A NEW MEANING TO THE LOST HENNA PATTERNS AND TAKES US THROUGH THE WOMEN’S LIFE CYCLE AND INNER WORLD TRANSFORMATIONS. Salaam/Peace, my name is Medina Trevathan, I am an artist who works with several mediums including the sacred tradition of henna. I come from a mixed Pakistani/Celtic heritage and spent my childhood in a remote Sufi center in the Andalusian Mountains about 2 hours from Granada. Now I moveA regularly between Oxford, Morocco, and southern Spain, all of which greatly have touchedA and informed my heart. I like to think my work focuses on the feminine, on Islam, on worship, and the Celtic vision. I am interested in the ordinary sacredness of the henna plant and how it is present in the great thresholds in our lives. Henna has graced the bodies of millions for thousands of years. It has marked, honored, and celebrated life cycles, you can find it laced delicately on the hands of a bride, or placed thickly and wrapped on the feet of farmers in the summer, to cool them, it appears in the uneven splodge

on newborn babies’ hands, it appears on the drums, on the animals, and the shrines. Henna’s are one of the blessings of Mother Nature. Henna has suffered as have many of the arts and traditions under the weight of the world we are living in; many of the old patterns have been lost, replaced by one homogenized dominant pattern. I want to remember and breathe life back into lost patterns; they elude me by their very nature, transient pieces of the art living on the bodies of women throughout time throughout the century. Yet through careful searching out of the corner of one’s eye glints of the henna dye appear in song, story, art, and poem. I desire to remember, to collect, and to gather, to honor the art that our mothers’ mothers’ mothers carried on their hands and bodies.

This selection of henna has been chosen to reflect the life cycle women go through in a very real and physical sense not only in their lifetime but within the space of a single month, every month. As we move through the different sections of our monthlong cycles, our inner worlds transform, going through deep winter in our bleeding phase, through the gentleAemergence of our spring, through the brilliance of the summer, and through the slow death of autumn. Only to start all over again, and in this sense, we reflect the earth, and she reflects us. In Moroccan culture, henna is used by women to mark the points in their period, for protection, for honoring, and for communication.

I got an opportunity to interact with an award-winning Indian artist whose work lives and breathes at the intersection of Magical Realism, Art, Technology, and Social Justice, Shilo Shiv Suleman, founder of The Fearless Collective. Her work is unapologetically embodied weaving together the sensual and sacred, past and future- through paintings, wearable sculptures, interactive installations, and public art interventions. She is the voice of several communities of women, cultures around the globe. She herself is an ever thriving movement of love, peace, victory, creation, and preservation of the most sacred art of being true to oneself and living the life which reflects purity. I feel very inspired by her ideology which is lucid and driven. Art is a way of life and Shilo proves it right.

What is The Fearless Collective? What have you envisioned with the organization? When the Nirbhaya case happened it became a kind of recognition for me that you can only look into your future if you have healed your past. And it felt like gender-based violence was an aching issue in the country and completely unresolved. It was the first protest I ever went to. Fearless began as a personal response because 125
all mainstream articles we were reading were talking about how we should be afraid to go out to the streets or attract too much attention to ourselves. The fear was counterproductive to the larger change that we needed to see, so Fearless began as a counter-movement to a lot of mainstream narratives on women reclaiming the right to tell their own stories and have become a movement for all artists across Southeast Asia reclaiming public spaces from

You as an artist have bridged cultures, spirituality, social causes, and technology. What is that one thing that truly drives you? The thing that I am most interested in right now is cultural perpetuity; it's about how India and Indianess in all of their diversity can continue to exist in the future. That's also why I choose to live in Rajasthan to work with traditional crafts here. When you look at the digital universe it feels much globalized and often feels very wide and I think we should be recreating south Asian futurism. For me, it's important how we built upon the dreams of our ancestors and took them forward rather than becoming extremely colonized, capitalized and globalized. This has been my mission with a lot of the work I have been doing like the piece I sold at Sotheby's or Burning Man. It brings the contemporary Indian nexus of art and technology in the future.

We try to bring the most invisible communities to a visible sphere. Fearless began as an online viral movement very organically, but the rest of it was strategically planned for 8 years with very intentional initiatives.

My relationship with art goes back to when I and my mother started painting a lot when I was 14 to 15 years old and it very much came from a moment of fear which is why fearlessness is very much a personal mission for me. My mother found herself to be a single mother with two kids she had to take care of on her own and she began to paint and teach art to be able to financially sustain us. I always say "beauty saved me" because beauty became both our emotional as well as financial backbone. I used to teach art with her, art is inherently alchemical like what starts as a moment of fear very often is transmitted into a creative expression. It was like we painted our universe and stepped into it. My mother Nilofer Suleman continues to be an incredible artist, kind of like a legacy now.

I represent the new generation of Indian art which is not just a painting in a gallery that’s framed and hung in the same style that continues into eternity but represents a new generation of art that looks at how art can interact with the street, how art can interact with our brain, how art can interact with AI, how art can interact with the world at large. So it is really for us also that a part of the way that we are looking at; decolonizing art in a way because before colonization all art existed everywhere, it was in our weapons, in our utensils, in our hair, in our poetry and there were no separate gallery spaces where you could see art and so I think that’s a big part of our collective mission is to be able to bring an approach to art which is not exclusive, that is not isolated and is interactive; it’s responsive.
Hinduism and I don’t see those two faiths being contradictory in any way, I see them as actually very complimentary and I think that there was a promise in some sense of an image that we mean when India was formed when it became into an independent nation and that was of secular space and course you’re seeing it all over at the moment where there is a very fundamentalist approach to a national identity that is being very violently put out into the streets and so for me in a way I feel embody in both faiths inside of me is a reminder that India as well as an embodiment of not just Hinduism and Islam but multiple tributaries, be it Sikhism, be it Buddhism, be it Islam, Hinduism. That is also why for me it’s equally important to work with Hindu themes and mythologies because I get to create and claim my own Hinduism in the process; that is when you’re woven into Hindu culture in general like we have this concept of the Ishta Deva where you choose your god, you choose which god you want to worship, which God created you. So I think the choice is crucial as we start to reclaim and reimagine any of these faiths and while things are getting very dangerous and very fearful in the world, I am very proud to be present at moments like Shaheen Baug, I am very proud to be present inside of temples and I fearlessly embody that faith in this diversity. Is it easier to create a commissioned art piece or conceptualize for your projects?
You quoted “India (like me) is Muslim. Like India, I am also Hindu”. I would like to request you to elaborate on this beautiful thought. I am half Hindu half Muslim and my mother’s Muslim and my father’s Hindu. I was brought up with both faiths in my household and I explored both faiths in my way while I was growing up, be it exploring Sufism in Rajasthan or understanding the temple traditions, the mythology of MARCH 2022
Yeah, I definitely do commissioned pieces and I enjoy most of course creating my own body of work because then it really allows for my own visions, my own imagination and my own dreams to be birthed with the same time a lot of the people that I work with on commissioned pieces understand that my work will always, because art is life on some level and I embody my practice deeply, I feel that if they come to me, they know what they are coming, so I am not asked to do things outside of my own imagination, however, with brands, that often comes up as an issue

when we spend enough time with each other. He had spent many months studying the brain waves of Himalayan monks in the mountains and seen what happens to the brain when we meditate, seen what happens to our breath, seen how our hearts are connected and so we started to develop a whole series of different experiments and installations and while the romance itself was not great, the art that was born of it was quite terrific. So pulse and bloom came from there, it came out of those conversations; we applied for a grant from Burning Man in 2014, got it, and went and built the installation out in the desert, it was my first time in America and I’ve continued to work very closely with the team at burning man ever since.

and that’s something that a lot of artists in India are grappling with is a lot of brands in India want to do art projects and have artists collaborate or be an ambassador for their brand but eventually it ends up being taken over by their own agenda and that often leaves the artist feeling like on one hand this is where a lot of economic abundance can come from but on the other hand, it has become a tool for somebody else’s brand, so I think it is something that is learning curve for how corporate and brands engage with artists. Do you ever face creative blockage? If yes, how do you overcome this? I don’t because my art is almost like my first language. For me it’s the way I communicate, the way that I hear, the way that I live, so for me a creative block feels like a block in living and so that’s not something that I feel like that’s a physical river that never empties. And it’s both a mix of what is intuitively given, what is channelled but it is also very much practised, like if you are dedicating your life to something, then at some point it becomes familiar, it’s like a relationship, first, it feels a little bit scary, you don’t know where it’s going but once you find comfort around it, you trust it. So I have a relationship of trust and reverence with my work. 129

MUST HAVE CONTEMPORARY ARTWORKS AT YOUR HOME Shares Gunjan Shrivastava, a leading contemporary artist. Article Curated by Naina Kumar
For those who consider themselves unconventional and often fluid in their taste and style, the dynamism of a contemporary home is what speaks to them the most. With an aesthetic that pushes the boundaries of what’s new, contemporary homes often blur the lines between trendy and classic. By its nature, contemporary homes are defined by the architecture and design of the moment while blending themselves seamlessly with other signature design elements. This fundamental idea is what makes contemporary art the perfect pièce de résistance to any contemporary home. NATURAL AND SUSTAINABLE Given the focus on sustainable design and ecofriendly interior spaces, natural and upcycled are essential to today's contemporary home. Whether it's creating spaces that strategically use natural lighting or retaining strong lines with distinct architectural details like an exposed brick wall or piping, eco-conscious design is characteristic of this interior style. For spaces like these, there are a plethora of options of upcycled art that encompass a wide range of textures and materials. Sculptures or mixed media montages made out of recycled materials like metal or glass can be interesting conversational pieces that can dramatize a space.
NEUTRAL TO POP The dominant colour palette in a contemporary 137
home more often than not is commanded by blacks, whites, and neutrals; the job of bringing in ‘the colour’ here is left to the accents and finishings. Contemporary styles like pop art or abstract compositions that use bright, bold palettes are a great way to liven up the home, with the neutraltoned walls presenting as the perfect backdrop. Mosaics too are a great way to introduce colour into any space, place them at eye level in a frame that’s metal or wood and you have magazineworthy interiors that serve as an extension to your style.
UNCLUTTERED BUT WELL BALANCED Finally, what must be considered at all times while picking art for a contemporary home is the core ethos of this style, which is - less is more. It's about executing a style well without overdoing it. In fact,

given the multitude of artistic mediumsa available in this style, you can have a variety of different pieces placed all over your home. But it's important to try and not overwhelm a space with too much and be very deliberate in the placement of each work, experimenting with different eye levels.

Introducing a standalone sculpture as a statement on a bare wall with light sources that draw attention to the piece is a great utilisation of space, alternatively taking a statement wall and creating a gallery of photographs specifically black and white motifs is a great way to add depth.

Exploring The Pros & Cons Of Fasting
WWW.FACEMAGAZINE.IN

MARCH 2022
ISSUE 06 VOL 04
Fasting is not a foreign concept to Indians. From Sunrise to sunset fasting of Ramadan to 8 Days Fasting of Jains, Navratri fasting for Hindus, different cultures of India have different ways and patterns of fasting. But the newest kid on the block is “Intermittent fasting”, some call it a fad others truly believe its magical medicinal benefits. Here we are breaking down a few pros and cons of adding fasting to your lifestyle.
155
FACE MAGAZINE
PROS Fasting plays a pivotal role in losing belly fat. Disciplined fasting enhances your hormone function by facilitating lower insulin levels and higher amounts of the hormones that break down your body fat and use it for energy. It improves body composition, encourages positive changes to your metabolism and makes your body feel good from the inside.
CONS
It contributes to lower risks of heart diseases as it controls your cholesterol levels, blood pressure and sugar.
One of the most common drawbacks of fasting is over-eating as people often eat twice the amount in the allowed hours to compensate for the fasting hours.
One of the most pivotal benefits of fasting is that it helps the body shift focus from digestion towards healing, thereby reducing stress and inflammation. This in turn helps fight anxiety and depression.
Some people feel tired or low in energy due to fasting, leading to reduced physical activity in the day or giving up exercising altogether.
It also promotes regeneration of cells in the body that aids the immune system in fighting off any risk of diseases. The fat loss also helps in releasing the unhealthy toxins from your system.
Staying hungry can sometimes mess with blood sugar levels, hence leading to one being moody and irritated, more than usual.
All these factors can eventually lead to reduced inches, possibly knock off a few kgs, great skin and hair. But as they say excess of anything is bad. Prolonged fasting can have a few unpleasant effects too.
Fasting is a safe and healthy habit to practice. When done the right way, it can lead to fruitful results. But it is important that you listen to the whispers of your body because what's good for someone else's body may not be suitable for yours. Stay safe, stay healthy.

YOGA This summer, ditch the weights and focus on your inner strength. Discard the notion that yoga is simply stretching and exploring the high intense asanas that engage your mind and muscles alike. It can be easily commenced from the comfort of your home or a nearby studio. Each workout session won't just aid your body but also provide the necessary clarity to your mind.
We live in a tropical country and the weather is unpredictable. Tomorrow could be gloomy or we could expect another heatwave by lunch time. It's important we adapt to the ever-changing temperature and opt for workouts that suit our bodies best.

I believe the story begins with the compiled various moments as a child where I was gravitated by a few elements I saw, a particular lace for instance I came across which my grandmother was using while she was making a blouse, or doilies at someone’s place for tea, women tying up their hair a certain way, and or the play of light when it falls on things around us, later I had a name for this trail of interests which turned out to be my deep interest for English literature and poetry, the time of victorian era, followed by classical realism in arts.
a little formal introduction to art. That was magical to me, it was a sign! And since then, I have continued to practice and be an avid learner in this realm of work. What trends have you observed in the art world? How do you foresee it evolving? At present I believe the contemporary art scene is a breath of fresh air. I definitely see its expansive reach given the exposure through social media as well! What do you do when you’re not in front of a canvas? What do you do to unwind yourself?
Tell us about the evolution of your practice over the years and your commitment to your style of work. I always knew I was creative but my practice began when I dropped out of everything, and by that I even mean the cumulated ideology of how one should be in their early twenties, and what they ought to do, I thoroughly immersed myself in practicing painting somewhere around beginning of 2013 and I must say in hindsight that changed my life, I do remember I was very reluctant of painting in oils but the moment I switched - there was no going back! That itself led me to painting very prolifically through the years, diving deeper into academic portraits and classical realism and having a sufficient amount of practice, winning me an award at Florence academy of art as the winner of their scholarship where I for the very first time got
I actually go to the canvas to unwind myself ! To be present without a collateral dialogue. Another similar space is when I do yoga, that space is magical to me. I am also trying to get better at roller skating, I keep myself engaged with music, poetry, literature and cafes in the city ! Who/ what was the motivation behind becoming an artist? I think back in 2012 I saw some works of artist David Gray which gave me that initial push. Of course later I studied alongside David and in fact now we are good friends as well, that for me is a gift. Please share some fond memories of your art journey.

The fondest for me was my trip to Florence, Italy. I spent months waking up to the beauty of that city and heading to the atelier painting till noon and then spending the whole afternoon learning about art in museums alongside a wonderful art historian. The second fondest memory was when I was in National portrait gallery and saw the painting in flesh, a self portrait by Elisabeth Vigee le Brun holding a palette, that was the first master copy I had done as an aspiring painter, it was a lovely surprise! The recent one is knowing that almost a decade later one of my artworks is heading to noon among a few amazing painters !

Tell us more about the moon project? Done in collaboration with my gallery 33 contemporary and being part of a show curated by Dr. Samuel Peralta back in 2020, was an exhibit in direct response to the global pandemic seeking works that evoked shelter, solace, safety. No terrestrial catalogue exists of shelter - it exists exclusively as pasty of a lunar edition nickel time capsule headed for the nova- c lander launching via spaceX in 2024. Fittingly the lunar codex will also be the first time women’s art is going to the moon. Currently the only paintings inhabiting the lunar surface are artworks by six prominent artists. Delivered in 1969, the
paintings, including one by Andy Warhol are etched on a ceramic wafer and represent abstract expressionism movement. As the first commercial mission and the first women’s art to land on the moon, the lunar Codex and the larger Artemis program honor the past while transitioning space travel into an exciting new era, and I am humbled to be a part of it. All credits to Dr. Samuel Peralta.
Haven’t thought much of it at all to be honest, I take it one year at a time ! And fill it with mostly everything I want to do and explore ! As for now I am heading to the states for a good six months and taking workshops and painting alongside some painters I truly admire ! MARCH 2022

My themes and contents have evolved over the years. When I was younger I was a happy child but made dark blues and sepia works, as I grew older darkness and hardships penetrated my life but my works became more and more colourful. My works are semi-autobiographical –I painted mostly feminine themes –women in different poses..then came the Female Torsos in the mid-90s. Started working with images of Frida Kahlo in mid-2000. During the same time, I did works based on the tragedy queens of celluloid like Meena Kumari and Marlyn Monroe. Recently I have painted on Devi themes...So all this imagery keeps recurring in my artworks.

Haha! Although this question is meant for some intellectual kind of people.. I am yet to learn and have enough wisdom to articulate well what I should say. Personally, I feel women, in general, are a bundle of unconditional love. They are delicate 'handle with care' kind yet the strongest. Women's day or month is undoubtedly a beautiful way to remind us to dedicate our attention towards celebrating that strength. And No amount of celebration & pampering is enough for the ladies we love & care for. Today there is a lot of pressure on women to look a certain way. Social media has also set unreal standards with all the filters. You on the other hand took to Instagram to talk
about your body issues. What prompted you to make this bold move? Yes, social media and society put a lot of pressure on women to appear a specific way. If you think about it, not only fat people but also thin women are judged for being too skinny. I believe there is always someone who wants to tell you how you look. I don't think filters are harmful, but utilizing them to replace reality is. It was an attempt to remind myself, and perhaps someone else who feels the same way, that you must embrace yourself, flaws and all, and love yourself just as you are. It was just a way to Face my fears & let go of the burden of unreal expectations from myself. Where do you see yourself 5 years from now? I don't even try to foresee what and where I would be tomorrow; hence thinking about five years is out of the question. I live by the day.
