DITOr's Note Love is in the Air. Love. A simple word that itself brings a smile to our face. And even though I believe that ‘Love’ should be felt and articulated each month of our entire year but thanks to St. Valentine, we surely have one definitive month dedicated only to Love and Romance. P.S- No complaints! We like cheesy. So without raising an eyebrow suspecting the legitimacy or reason for Valentine, let’s rather swing on this joy ride and seize the day or month to express to your loved ones… why they are your loved one. And so, our Issue for the month of February is based on the theme of ‘Love’ and we hope that we have succeeded in bringing to you, some insightful and romantic outlooks in the field of Fashion, Art, Culture and Entertainment. editor

Getting to know The Poonawallas: As we already know and they really need no introduction, yet let’s get a glimpse or I’d say, a recap on this esteemed family. The Poonawalla Group is one of India’s most known & reputed business houses, engaged in a wide array of activities ranging from engineering, horse racing, breeding, pharmaceuticals, exports and finance. They are market leaders in various fields of activities not only in India but also through exports to a number of countries.

Interviewed by Sukhmani Sadana FEB 2021 | 15

Yohan Poonawalla is the Chairman and Managing Director of the Poonawalla Engineering Group Intervalve Poonawalla Ltd, El-O- Matic India Pvt. Ltd and the Chairman of Poonawalla Financials Pvt. Ltd. Intervalve Poonawalla Ltd is one of India’s leading manufacturers of Industrial Valves which are exported to 46 countries like Europe, Russia, Far East, Middle East, Africa and South America… to name a few. And El-O-Matic (India) Pvt Ltd is a leading manufacturer of Pneumatic Actuators that has created a niche of it’s own in the field of manufacture and supply of quality Pneumatic Actuators. Yohan is also a Director of the Poonawalla Stud Farms and Poonawalla Racing and Breeding and a stakeholder in the now even more talked about Serum Institute of India, which was co-founded by his father Mr. Zavaray Poonawalla. Being born in an industrialist family, corporate nitty-gritty and fervor came naturally to him at a very young age. It dawned upon him early in life on the aspects he had to focus on to strengthen the natural impulse of his business acumen. He advocates the saying “There is no school in the world that can match the exposure and experience you gain doing practical groundwork and all of us know that tougher the conditions the better you are moulded”.

FEB 2021 | 16

I must add on to tell you that horses are very close to their hearts and the entire family is deeply bonded over their love for horses. The family owns one of Asia’s leading Stud Farms in India, exporting many champion horses that have won and created a benchmark in many countries such as USA, Hong Kong, Singapore, Dubai and Malaysia. But the Stud Farm is more of a passion for the entire family.

FEB 2021 | 18

There’s so much more to this man. It’s no secret that apart from being an illustrious industrialist, Yohan is widely known as YZP amongst car enthusiasts and friends alike and is famous for his passion for automobiles.

As for his education, Yohan Poonawalla studied at The Bishops School in Pune and has done his master’s degree at Wadia College Pune and his MBA in the UK.

Yohan and his companies have a wide list of Awards that they have won: Outstanding Achievement Award for Industrial Development, Global Achievers Award and Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Excellence Award for Outstanding Individual Achievements & Distinguished Services to the Nation…and the list goes on.

Inspite of being a driven industrialist, Yohan also has a soft side to himself. He gives benevolent assistance to needy people especially among the lower strata of society. Just naming a few, he has donated to the Pune Police brand new Jeeps for patrolling the streets of Pune and is involved in several Corporate Social Responsibility activities such as donations to hospitals and munificent donations to schools such as the Soli Poonawalla school named in memory of his late grandfather.

Michelle is the Director of Poonawalla Engineering Group and also an artist, philanthropist and The First Lady of the Poonawalla family. She lives and works between London, UK and Pune in India. Her Art explores universal, socially engaged topics that resonate with a diverse range of audiences, creating powerful memories and moving experiences. Her practice combines cutting-edge technology and traditional artistic mediums in an emotionally charged and poetic form; often utilizing sound, video mapping, projection, motion sensors and other techniques to bring her innovative paintings and installations to life. Her seminal piece, Introspection (2018), is a striking, immersive experiential artwork which left many viewers moved and affected, whilst inspiring them to take action in their own lives. Her work has been exhibited at the Saatchi Gallery, London, Alserkal Avenue, Dubai and as a collateral project at the Kochi Biennale, India. More recently she has begun exploring work with shorter digital format films. Her 3 min 36 seconds film ‘Circle of Life’ addresses the idea of memory and is exhibited at the 7th Mediations Biennale in Poland.

What’s the one thing you like the most about each other?

Yohan and I work together as a team in all our businesses. We compliment each other’s strengths and both take up different roles and make it a point that all strategic decisions are always taken jointly.

What is your favourite place you have stayed? A favourite place we often go to is Dubai. Even though we travel to other places and like exploring, we have stayed at the Burj al Arab since it first opened 21 years ago. And now, for us it is like a second home in Dubai. The staff is warm, their service is excellent and they know our family and our requirement for years now so that just makes it all the more inviting.

How important are social networks in your business?

Social network is always important for anyone today. With the world-gone digital, people turn to social platforms for viewing, more information and communication.

FEB 2021 | 21

Michelle…What’s a regular day in your life like? Each day is very different, given I have a variety of different roles. Of course, being the Pandemic, a typical day has changed for everyone. I do yoga twice a week in the mornings. Lunch is always with the children. The day varies from either a day to do Art or a day with office related work or a day managing the house or landscape that I am passionate about. My evenings are spent with the children in our garden, with our animals, our dogs and miniature ponies. Sometimes the kids cycle or play cricket or perhaps badminton. Dinner is a family affair and we eat early. Post dinner is family time and we often relax on our terrace.

What does this year look like for you? And our country? This has been a difficult last year for everyone around the world. We have all been through and are going through an extraordinary period never seen before. 2021 will also be a difficult period for many as many countries go into third / fourth lockdowns. With the vaccination drive starting this year, we hope that towards the mid/ end of the year things start improving. Economies & small businesses as well as larger ones have taken huge hits. It is important that one remains sensible, balanced and follows the norms to be safe.

FEB 2021 | 22

Behind closed door, how would you describe being Yohan and Michelle Poonawalla ? For Yohan and myself, being us is as normal as being you. Regular individuals doing what we need to do, I think it’s always good to be grounded, work hard, be kind and stay focused.

Arielle Ricci / Nellamoon

Interviewed by Rishika Garg

What do you do together with your husband and nellamoon co-founder Chris for fun?

My husband and I love to travel. It’s where most of our inspiration for nellamoon comes from! This year we’ve hunkered down and focused on building the business since covid hindered our ability to travel the world. We also like to cook, read, exercise, and spend time with family and friends.

FEB 2021 | 26

Ari elle FEB 2021 | 27

Arielle Arielle Arielle Arielle Arielle Arielle What attracted you to each other?

We are both very passionate about helping people and giving back, and we love that about each other. When we first met, we fell in love within weeks and knew we’d spend the rest of our lives together. It was magical, and hard to explain. Love is really an energy and ours was strong from day 1. We are very different in many ways, so we balance each other out, however we are also very much alike in how we view life, relationships, etc. I think that’s the key to a successful relationship.

How do work responsibilities impact your family life?

We try to focus on balance. I studied yoga and became a certified instructor before starting nellamoon and incorporate a lot of those practices into my daily routine. Sometimes it’s hard to draw the line in the sand between work and family life, but we continuously try to focus on being cognizant of that. When you love what you do, it doesn’t always necessarily feel like work, so that helps a lot as well. This company is part of who we are and we love that about it.

FEB 2021 | 28

e e e e e e FEB 2021 | 29

What has been the most challenging time during your relationship? We don’t really see things as challenges, but more so opportunities to get better. When Chris lost his mother to cancer, just one month after our wedding, it was hard for both of us. I lost my mother when I was younger, so I was able to help guide him through his grieving cycle. It helped us grow stronger as a couple and inspired us to honor both of our mothers for the rest of our lives.

How does nellamoon overall spread the love? Love and kindness permeates through everything we do. It’s our culture and the key drivers of every decision we make. We use business as a force for good and want to grow this even more so we can have a greater impact in society. Our mothers dedicated their lives to helping people shine, and our mission is to do the same. Each time someone lights their nellamoon candle, it serves as a reminder to shine bright and live their best life.

Any big Valentine’s Day plans? We’ll likely do something romantic, but low key this year! I’m thinking a healthy home cooked meal, some Frank Sinatra music, a nice bottle of Dry Farms wine, and cuddle sessions on the couch with the pups. That sounds like a perfect evening :) FEB 2021 | 30

Interviewed by Rishika Garg

How did you meet your partner? We first met at the gym. She was supposed to train with my friend; but, he was going out of town for a while referred her to me. I saw her; and, I knew then I didn’t want to train her I wanted to get to know her.

DP is a lifestyle athlete and a former D2 All-American Basketball Player and specializes in followalong bodyweight workouts. He is the face of HeatXtreme (http:// heatxtreme.com). He consistently does in-person classes where people follow along with his workouts. Through COVID, he has been doing live workouts on IG 1-2x per day, 5 days per week. DP is a father of 2 children. He has trained some big celebrities too like Michael B Jordan, Ludacris, Jermaine Dupri, Jim Jones, 21 Savage, Eva, Lil Scrappy, Devonta Freeman and Porsha Williams.

How have you kept the romance and fun in your relationship? Sometimes it’s hard to not get caught up in the day to day dealings. So, we make sure to slow down and focus on each other, especially at night we have OUR TIME. It’s a priority for us to keep the relationship healthy. Even if it’s just cuddling to watch a movie, sending flirting texts throughout the day or randomly picking up flowers on the way home. We love to laugh; so, sending funny videos and memes or doing a TikTok video is always fun and keeps the spark in the relationship.

N FEB 2021 | 33

What’s the best way to make up after a fight? Depending on what the fight is, to apologize and reassure through affection. But me I always think food is a good weight to break the ice.... like who doesn’t want to eat a good meal? Lol

What has been the best part of your relationship so far? The growth. And knowing that I have someone who loves me unconditionally and always has my back. That truly means more than anything. When you can see past the mistakes, flaws and bad decisions and push that person to be better, it builds and tightens the relationship.

FEB 2021 | 34

FEB 2021 | 35

How do work responsibilities impact your family life? Oftentimes, I’m not there like I want to be because of work. I make a lot of sacrifices. I’m glad I’m with someone who understands it’s for the betterment of our family.

Why should others use and follow HeatXtreme to boost their own healthy is all about teaching you lifestyle and love life? HeatXtreme how to live a healthy lifestyle and giving

you the tools to do so. By being healthy, mentally and physically, you start to feel better about yourself and you look better. In turn your confidence goes through the roof, which I’m sure your partner will notice and enjoy! This same feeling flows over into your relationship, work and other areas of your life for the better.

How long have you both been together and how did you two meet?

We’ve been together almost 10 years now, wow sounds crazy to me as I say it but we dated for almost 7 & been married for almost 3! We met through a bunch of common friends & I always knew him as my childhood friend Sonam’s hot cousin from delhi. So we had been acquaintances for a long time before we started dating. He was really shy & I was always very outgoing! FEB 2021 | 38

In today’s time, Whats your idea of love? I think Love has transcended from just being a childish fantasy or feeling to something more mature & real. It’s actually very liberating & not something that binds you if your nurture it well & trust the process. It’s an evolution of feelings, choices, memories & instincts & forever changing & adapting. It’s as beautiful as you believe it to be.

Is he as stylish as you are? Do you style him most of the times? Haha i wish! Believe it or not, he’s the more stylish one of the two of us. He’s way more intune with the latest collabs, upcoming brands & trends, he inspires me actually in the menswear field for sure. And he’s very self sufficient, he styles himself rather well. FEB 2021 | 39

Do you both compliment each others profession in any way? I think we do, it helps that we both are from the creative industry. Also being a menswear stylist at home has been rather handy to him. We both get inspired by knowledge for similar things & our aesthetics are similar too.

FEB 2021 | 40

Who likes to chill more and party more? I think we have our days & moods. I can safely say we love to party & we love to chill.. happy to be homebodies most days but then when we rage, we really knock it out!

Who is the planner and who is the leader? Moh’s definitely the leader, we are quite spontaneous as a couple however he likes to know his options & keep them ready.

What’s your favourite holiday destination as a couple and why? I think most recently Israel surprised us, absolutely in love with the people, the beaches, the food & the bohemian style party scene. It’s such a vibe & almost stuck in a time capsule, its an experience. We also love safaris! It’s one of our favourite holidays!

FEB 2021 | 41

Who is more Bollywood between the two? him!

What are the things/ ideologies you follow to keep your relationship afloat and growing?

Grow together, have deeper acceptance & tolerance for each other. Also let go quickly, we fight a lot like any couple but we make up also quickly & I think thats key to surviving through the rougher days. FEB 2021 | 42

Do you like alone time with each other or prefer the company of family and friends? Both depends on our mood. But alone time is very nice.

Who is the enthusiast on daily basis and who is the lazy one? I’m the lazy one, Moh is the enthusiast, he also wakes up at an unGodly hour!

What do you both like to do together for fun?

Any love advice for the newly weds and couples in love?

We love to travel, thats our thing, exploring new places, cultures, food, history, wines, fashion. It really nourishes both of us & us as a couple too.

H

Tell us a bit about you two? Love? Arranged marriage? How did you two get together? Love. We met in a play in New Delhi around 17 years ago, we were playing lovers in a French farce, and I guess that set the tone

What’s your idea/ definition of love? Understanding, space, and enjoying the same things together. Also friendship, that’s important

What’s your favorite holiday destination and why? The Maldives, Sid loves to dive, and I am a total water baby. Also, it’s so peaceful, and we live such hectic lives, so it’s a great escape! We try and go every year. Italy is another one of those places we feel Happiest in!

Who fights more apologizes for more?

and

Rosh fights more because she cares more. Sid says sorry because he wants the fights to be done with it.

FEB 2021 | 45

Do you like alone time with each other or enjoy the company of friends and family more? We are definitely that kinda couple who likes hanging out with each other the most.

Who is the shopper, and who is the sleeper? That’s easy. One guess! Sid loves his sleep.

FEB 2021 | 46

Who is the enthusiast on a daily basis, and who is the lazy one? Again, Roshni has 1000 interests and is continually making plans, while Sid’s ideal way to spend a day is Netflix and chill.

Complete this sentence “He’s my........”? She’s my...? Best friend (we both said this simultaneously).

What do you both like to do together for fun? Travel, eat, listen to music and spend our silences together too.

How long did you date before you tied the knot? 3 years FEB 2021 | 47

What are some of the things you do to keep your relationship growing? We communicate; that’s the key to keep growing together.

How are you both different as parents?

Looking back at some of the expectations you might have had before your marriage. Have they changed now? For the better or worse? I think we both went into it with just a gut instinct, didn’t overthink. It felt right and still kinda does.

FEB 2021 | 48

Sid is more relaxed. The boys really look up to him and want to grow up and be just like him, so by default Rosh is the bad cop and makes all the fun plans and earns all the brownie points.

SUHANI & JUSTAS I n t e r v i e w e d b y S u k h m an i S a d a n a FEB 2021 | 50

You recently got married. How did you two get together? I was 19, and I had just landed in London for my studies, and I was struggling with my suitcase in the halls. As luck would have it, there was Justas, this 6ft-something tall Lithuanian student, who offered to help me carry my bags. We got talking, and I thought he was cute, so I asked for his number to buy him a beer later, as a thank you. He never let me buy him that beer, but it was a great conversation starter in hindsight! We’ve been together ever since!

Yours was a truly unconventional one. What made you go with your Uber cool and exceptionally amazing denim wedding attire?

Because we only had a few days to prepare, I asked Justas what he wanted to wear. He suggested we recreate what we wore the first time we met. As much as I appreciated the poetic sentiment, I had met him straight after a red-eye flight, so I suggested we do an elevated version of those outfits. I wore ripped Levi’s jeans (my ‘something old’), a white shirt, and a blazer from Reiss and topped it with a Lanvin coat. My’ something new’ was a pair of white boots from Paris, Texas, and I wore my friend’s blue socks as my’ something borrowed.’ I must be the first bride to be ready in 15 minutes flat! FEB 2021 | 51

What’s your idea/ definition of love?

No words will ever come close to describing the feeling!

FEB 2021 | 52

What’s your favorite holiday destination as a couple and why? We love exploring new countries, so we try to travel to different countries! If I had to choose though - I would say Italy, the food, the landscape, the art - it’s got the whole package.

Do you both compliment each other’s work and working environment?

Justas Just as has always been the inspiration for everything I do. When I designed my first piece of jewelry, we were in university, and he was the one who constructed it for me. As an interaction designer, he’s been my sounding board. I look at things with an artistic and sculptural lens. He approaches things with a very technical and functional eye. So, for us, it’s the best kind of collaboration. FEB 2021 | 53

Vows and tales

On how destination weddings are shaping up now, Parthip tells us there is a huge demand for venues in hill-stations for summer weddings, and weekend hotspots like Lonavala, Alibaug near Mumbai, Mahabalipuram near Chennai, Mysore near Bengaluru and resorts that are located a little away from Delhi NCR are seeing a huge boom in demand. Rajasthan, Goa and Kerala will of course continue to be sought-after destinations in 2021 and 2022. Taj Chia Kutir Darjeeling and JW Mussoorie are on top of the list in 2021 and will continue to be there for some time, he concludes.

Amore: Art & Artist

Rameshwar Broota &

Vasundhara Tewari Bro ota

FEB 2021 | 122

Rameshwar Broota Broota was born in 1941 in Delhi, graduated in Fine Art from Delhi College of Art in 1964. His work revolves around sustained exploration of the body and its vulnerabilities. He is known for his satirical Ape series of 1970-1980 and also for his unique scratch technique in painting. Broota has had several one person shows of paintings, photographs and resin sculptures in Delhi and elsewhere. A retrospective of his work was mounted by Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, New Delhi. His works are in collection with several prestigious institutions, museums and individual collectors in India and other countries. Broota is head of the Art Department of Triveni Kala Sangam and lives and works in Delhi. Broota says “Art has been my passion and love since childhood when I would hide to draw and paint escaping studies. Now, I feel blessed to be able to spend maximum time involved in creative thought and practice.I have followed my heart and kept life simple and focused. My relationship with Vasundhara has added to this joy and kept my life blessed with fulfilment and excitement.I love to travel and laugh with her and in our moments of togetherness all else fades away” .

FEB 2021 | 123

Vasundhara Tewari Broota Born 1955 in Kolkata, Vasundhara graduated from Lady Shri Ram college,Delhi University , with literature as her subject and studied at Triveni Kala Sangam, New Delhi. During 1982-84 she worked on a cultural scholarship awarded by the department of culture of the government of India. She was awarded at the Annual Exhibition of Art, AIFACS (1981) the Delhi State Award from the Sahitya Kala Parishad (1982,1987 and 1992), Sanskrit Award, New Delhi (1987) Silver medal at the First International Biennial of Plastic Arts, Algiers (1987) and during 1988-90 Vasundhara worked, on a Fellowship awarded by the Department of Culture, Government of India. Her works are in many public and private collections in India and abroad. Vasundhara’s treatment and use of the female nude are diffused as she creates abstraction that is often emblematic of the inner life of contemporary women. In the more recent works of FEB 2021 | 124

Vasundhara, a sensibility towards the understanding of the internal and external psychological spaces of the artist alias the ‘woman’ is displayed lucidly. Her paintings are a celebration of a contemporary woman, unafraid to reveal her soul and at the same time, participate in the daily lifepatterns unencumbered.

Vasundhara she says “Art is an integral part of my life and life in the studio has been centre stage since student days. Art gives me the joy and meaning and helps me plumb the depths within. It is where I find true expression; a zone in which I can be free from social inhibitions, censorships and surprise myself creating images that resonate with my feelings and experiences

of the world. In this journey I have little room for polite social interactions. Rameshwar Broota has been an ideal partner in that he is intensely involved in his creative practice and is not particularly interested in taking time out for activities outside the studio. We share a bond of love and understanding and I cannot imagine life apart from him. The breaks we take are often

for travelling to new places both near and far. We work in separate spaces but are in close proximity and our daily meals are together. Love brings out the best in me and gives me the strength and calm in the face of all life’s ups and downs. Ultimately this is the closest bond and for me in addition to mutual attraction, empathy, care and respect are at the core of love.”

training, a Master’s Degree in Art in the year 1988. This is where my journey as an artist began. After nine years of painting, I had my first solo exhibition inaugurated by the legendry Late Mr. S.L. Kirloskar in the year 1986. An Ode To The Promised Land Of Love, Romance And Gr Legend Of The Valentine’s Day

Italy lets you unwind and instantly awakens your sensual fantasies. The renaissance work of arts, ancient monuments, elaborate sculptures, mesmerising fountains and winding alleys arouse your soul with abundant appreciation, heartwarming gratitude, overflowing empathyall being pure sentiments of love. The land of Italy is sacred to star crossed lovers as it is the birthplace of the proverbial legend of St Valentines. The story affirms that St Valentine secretly wedded lovers in discreet ceremonies against the dictates of the emperor who had strictly banned marriages in order to enroll more men in the army. Once the powerful monarch discovered these illegal marriage ceremonies, Valentine was imprisoned. There, he fell in love with the blind daughter of his jailer, and miraculously restored her sight before being executed the very next day i.e. February 14. Posthumously, he was declared a Saint by Pope Gelasius. A parallel legend suggests that February 14 celebrates Queen Juno – the goddess of Marriage and Women. Italy is undeniably the ideal destination to spend your honeymoon, anniversary or adventurous get-away from prying eyes. Walk into any town or alley, you will find a sea of lovers young and old, FEB 2021 | 150

conveniently entwined in each other’s comfort, uncaring of the world around them, reveling in their wildest pleasures. Naturally, your Instagram is doused in your lovey-dovey couple snapshots along with suggestive hashtags and emojis. P.S. - the romance that’s oozing on pictures remains to be continued behind the scenes. Stefania Costanza is the Consul General of Italy to Mumbai. She is proficient in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese and German. She rightfully explains, “All those visiting Italy will fall in love with it, conquered by its magic. It happens to Anna, the young princess starred by a superb Audrey Hepburn in Vacanze Romane (Roman Holiday, 1953), who discovers Rome riding a Vespa with Gregory Peck. It happens to Anita Ekberg, who meets Marcello Mastroianni in La Dolce Vita (The Good Life, 1960) and ends up with him swimming in the Trevi Fountain. It happens to all Woody Allen’s characters in To Rome with Love (2012), and it happens all over again to Nawazuddin Siddiqui in Roam Rome Mein (2019)”. Italian lovers prefer to present each other with the trademark Perugina Baci chocolates with creamy hazelnut cover and a sweet cherry liquid-filled center. The lucky Perugina beneficiaries anticipate a beautiful poem carefully hidden inside its wrapper.

FEB 2021 | 151

Verona is the epicenter of Italy’s culture around love and Valentine’s Day. Verona is the town where the Shakespearean saga of Romeo Juliet transpired. ‘Verona in Love’, is a four day fest commemorating Valentine’s Day. Verona In Love delights lovers with love themed art shows, flea markets, classical Opera, and free musical concerts in the Piazza dei Signori. A letter writing contest is held to felicitate the most heart-touching letter written to Juliet. At night, lanterns are illuminated all over the town. A visit to the Capulet House and leaving a love note by a bronze statue of Juliet, is believed to assure the good luck of your lover. Terni is the sacred town where St Valentine was born and buried. In the honour of his brave martyrdom, St Valentine’s feast is organised outside the La Basilica de San Valentin. On the Sunday before February 14, all the couples of fiancées to marry in the following months within a year, attend the special Mass at Terni and vow their love. A prize is also reserved for the one who displays an exceptional act of love. Innamorati a Camogli, translating to Lovers in Camogli is a week-long Valentine’s Day event held in the attractive seaside town of Camogli. The celebration involves a large commune of lovers participating in entertaining events. The festivities also involve the annual Festa della Promessa or the Promise. People in Padova and Monselice designate a one of its kind ritual to Valentine’s Day that is in fact not related to adult lovers. In the Church of Santa Maria dei Servi, little keys symbolising familial affection and safety against childhood illnesses, are sanctified and bestowed on the little kids. Italian model, photographer and Instagram influencer Elio Ministeri (@elioministeri) says, “Love is definitely the mood of us Italians. Italians are very passionate. synonym of love, especially for Valentine’s Day. People associate romance with many Italian cities like Venice (city where I live), Florence, Rome, Portofino. I personally consider that every day can be a special day to spend with your partner. A one night romantic getaway in a special place, with a room and a bottle of fine Italian wine, can be very exciting!” To the starving seekers of love, Italians can serve you a full course meal by satisfying all your senses, especially, the visual. Italy being the fashion capital of the world, wearing outfits is a highly venerated ritual. On Valentine’s Day, people accentuate their romantic quotient or physical likeability by accessorising their apparels with blood red and other erotic hues. FEB 2021 | 153

E I Elio Ministeri are exclusively reserved for couples. A sweet sounding bell is used to request the presence of a waiter. You can also order a specialised firework display. The wooing stage is essential to the love culture of Italy. The locals are wellversed with not only physical display of affection but also at spinning a flirtatious conversation or an endearing note of praise. Fashion journalist, writer at HuffPost, Vanity Fair and Blogger of theitalianwife. com Daria Simeone says, “Non-Italians love the rhythmic sound of our language, the welcoming attitude of our people. Italian food is a metaphor for passion. A delectable pasta, profoundly garnished pizza combined with a fresh Italian wine can easily get you high on love. La festa degli innamorati that is, the day of lovers, in an Italian style is enjoyed by going to the restaurant for an intimate dinner. Restaurants all over Italy revere Valentine’s Day by offering pre-curated menus. at the pub before they could express a strong warmth and connection. Italians express love and warmth in every interaction. In English either you are speaking to a friend or to your better half you say I love you. In Italy, we have two different expressions Ti amo is reserved for the passion of a romance. Ti voglio bene is good enough to say i love you to a friend.” Valentine’s day in Italy encompasses sacrosanct beliefs about love. For instance, Venetians believe that if you kiss while you are passing under a bridge, then your bond will be everlasting. For years, unwed girls in Italy believed that the first face they saw on Valentine’s Day was of the man they shall marry or at least a man who looked like him. Accordingly, young dames would be awake early in the morning to look out their window at men who strolled by their streets. Young sweethearts avow their love attaching padlocks or “lucchetti” to bridges and throwing away the key. The ritual began when the soldiers of war would leave the locks as a promise to return to their loved ones. The act is a symbol of eternal bond. The tradition came to be widely practised after the movie “Ho Voglia di Te,” or “I Want You.” River Arno, Ponte Milvio in Rome, and Ponte Vecchio in Florence are ideal locations to perform this classic act first hand.

Daria Simeone A visit to Italy embeds you with never before experienced epiphanies and a holy rush of carnal bliss. Italy reminds you of how it feels to blush or have butterflies in your stomach. Even when you physically bid adieu as a tourist, the sweet romantic after effect still holds its charms over you. You can channel your new found love energies in various ways. By binging on rom-com movies,

composing a quixotic poem, calling your loved one to say ‘I love You’ or simply opening an account on Tinder to find the one. So travel to the global Lover’s Paradise and attune yourself to the world’s best traditions of celebrating Valentine’s Day. On that note, Buon San Valentino!

But sometimes life has a strange way of reminding us that love doesn’t always last forever! This book is the story to Holly and Gerry and their rollercoster love story which sadly is short lived because Gerry passes away. But when our loved one leaves does does love also disappear? Cecelia Ahern created compelling characters that tell about growing up, the poignancy of loss and of rediscovery. The characters are real people that they seem to jump out of the pages and at me. They are flawed and human in their reactions and in their choices. The characters were incredibly well developed

THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY by Robert James Waller

Love comes in many shapes and forms. It’s not constricted with rules and definitely not bound by any predispositions. And if there was a story that expresses that then it’s this. Quiet powerful and challenging this book tells the story about a free spirited photographer whose life is no less than an adventure and a farmer’s wife who is lives in Iowa with her children. They meet for just 4 days and in those 4 days they create a love story that lasts them a lifetime even if they were apart. Moments between them are movingly evoked. It’s a love story that stays wit. A bittersweet tale of lingering memories and forsaken possibilities. FEB 2021 | 158

LOVE AT THE TIME OF CHOLERA by Gabriel Garcia Marquez

Love that stands the test of time and fate. This book is the story about two lovers who fell in love in their youth but as many “practical people” do they choose stability over passion. Fermina Daza too chose to marry a well settled man instead her lover Florentino. He remains hearbroken and as most tragic men do in stories he tries to fill the void with a string of other women. However neither the stability of marriage neither the comfort of other women help the two complete their lives. And many years later when the two meet again no longer as young passionate lovers but as older wiser strangers it’s a second chance at ‘what could have been’

PRIDE AND PREJUDICE by Jane Austin

A book that was written in 1813 and still resonates with people today. Unforgettable characters like Mr Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet and even after numerous film adaptations which aren’t a patch on the book. This book continous to be the greatest love story of all times. Since it needs to introduction my recommendation is – MUST READ IT! FEB 2021 | 159

DR. ZHIVAGO

by Boris Pasternak If there is one novel that everyone should read this would be among the top must have. Set up against the Soviet revolution in Russia this tragic love story tells the tale of two people – Yuri and Lara. Yuri is a brilliant doctor. This is a classic novel not only from it’s political significance of how the Russian revolution seemed like the answer to the misery faced by the people of Russia due to the excessives of aristocracy but unfortunately quitely becomes riddled with it’s own evils. It also talks about a kind of love that is beyond conformities and societal boundaries. The love Yuri and Lara have for each other dispite being married to their respective spouces is something that seems almost pre-destined. Though when read from today’s perspective the relationship may raise many questions regarding the authors portrayal of its female characters as well as his justification the book was written the society was of adultry. However one must remember those in a very different place. So my advise notions have evolved over time and at the time is read it without any prejudice

Kingfishe Kingfisher Bangalore, 2021

The global lock down had taken most of fashion’s biggest names online and so, in the first sign of things opening up, it was naturally a pleasure to see Giorgio Armani, Karl Lagerfeld, Miuccia Prada and Manolo Blahnik amongst a host of fashion’s biggest names back on ground, at the Bangalore Turf Club for the running of the Kingfisher Ultra Derby 2021.
