I BET YOU WON'T SCAN ME.

Editor’s Note This issue is not about just the “NEW YOU”. It deals with how we can make actual changes in 2020, by focusing a little more on our mental health and physical fitness. I am happy to share some great spa-cations that will give you all the right reasons to find some time for a small getaway with your near and dears. Our cover star, Shakti Mohan, talks to us about her journey as a Danceprenuer and her studio, Nritya Shakti. She has been a great inspiration for the millennials and we wish her luck on her journey ahead. I also had the pleasant opportunity to interview one of my favorite personalities, Jeffrey Allen, who has been a game changer in the field of energy. Do catch his interview; among other things, he has shared a special link for all readers directing them to a spiritual fitness free masterclass with some hidden discount codes for the detailed course.

small Jan 1, 2020. New Year. New Me. Bring it. Urgh, snooze… you know the story. A lot of people want some form of change in their lives and that is great. Change is natural, healthy and mostly beneficial. However, here’s something we often forget when considering change: We are a sum of our habits. The small things that we do every single day are the things that makes us who we are. Read that back. Small Things. Every Day. Who we are OK, so before you light the wick on your 2020 Change Rocket, grab your element of change and filter it through these 6 simple check-boxes:

1 Know your WHY

Write down what you want to change and why you want to change it. Now take the first answer and ask why you want that. Do it 5 times. Your last response should trigger some form of emotion. It should tap into the real underlying reason you want that change and you should FEEL it within. The reason is that when you read it, you will FEEL that the outcome of the change you desire, is greater than the comfort of continuing to do what you current are. Write it in black marker on an A4 piece of paper and stick it on your mirror so you reinforce it every day. Because you will need it every day. Your change will come from doing new, unfamiliar, potentially painful (emotional or physical - but only because they are not yet habits remember) small things every day, and you will need to FEEL that real reason to push you to keep you doing them.

3 Stay MICRO Whatever the element of change is, break it down into simple, progressive steps. For example: I want to get stronger. What can I easily do each day? I could do some pushups. Awesome, can you do 5 pushups each day? Yes. Great, that is your first step. Set yourself a small attainable goal for the day. Doesn’t matter how small, just isolate and lock in the first step. Because the key is not necessarily the first step, it is just getting STARTED. We have an uncanny ability to build disproportionate mental hurdles that make us hesitate and avoid what we think will be uncomfortable. But once we start, we find that actually, we are absolutely fine. In fact, usually we nail it and then think ‘what was I worried about’ - Im sure you have done it before? It’s all in our head and woven into the story we tell ourselves. So stay Micro - isolate the first step and just get it happening every day to begin. No getting lost or intimidated by the big picture or the end goal. You will be amazed with what happens once the ball starts rolling. Small Things. Every Day. Who we are.

5 ACCOUNTABILITY

Need someone to encourage and support? Share your vision with someone. Open up, tell them how you want to feel and what you want to change. Be vulnerable (we will cover the amazing upside of vulnerability in future issues), but for now, don’t be afraid to share.

Often we are scared to share our hopes, fears and concerns because of what we perceive people might think of us, or how they might react. But once again, that is in our head. Most people will love it and want to help us. In fact, most people will probably share a similar desire for change and all of a sudden you have an accountability buddy. Someone to keep you honest and on track. Have you knocked off your little step today? No, let’s do it together. You will hear the phrase ‘find your tribe’ tossed around. Tribe, squad, mates, crew… doesn’t matter. What does matter is that we become like the people we surround ourselves with. So find someone or a group that will help motivate, support, encourage and just as important, celebrate your progress with you.

The New Me Final 3...

1) Whatever your first step, find a way to make it FUN. Your favourite music will always help. 2) You get to choose. You have the power. How you move, what you eat, what you do, is your choice. 3) Please be at peace with time and recognise the power of consistency. Get the right thoughts and behaviours and Change will happen. Absolutely no doubt about it. But it won’t happen tomorrow. What will happen tomorrow is that first step. And then that first step becomes a habit. And then that habit becomes who you are. The person that now FEELS all the words that they wrote down at the beginning. The person that is now the vision they had when they took that first step. Small Things. Every Day. Who we are.

2

Visualise your FUTURE self

We struggle with placing value on our future self. Often we will choose short term pleasure over long term gain and a lot of the time this is why the desired change does not occur.

Create a vision in your mind and then jump online and find the images that represent that vision. Print them out and stick them on your wall. How will the change make you FEEL? Write these words down and stick them on your fridge. Find a role model who is completing what you want to do and read how they are doing it. Create a little mantra that inspires you and make it the lock screen image on your phone. Surround yourself with how your FUTURE self will feel, look and be. Allow it to change the story you tell yourself about yourself. Use it to inspire you to keep DOING those little behaviours every day. Small Things. Every Day. Who we are.

4 PAIR it

Small Things. Every Day. Who we are. Grab a piece of paper and jot down as many things that you can think of that you do every day. Brush your teeth, wait for your coffee machine, make your bed, watch TV, scroll on your phone? Pick one of these daily habits and combine it with your first step. Utilising an existing habit to incorporate a new behaviour is a proven way to reduce the barriers to completing the new behaviour. It opens up both the physical and mental pathway to easily bring the new behaviour into our established routine with minimal friction. Small Things. Every Day. Who we are.

6 REWARD

One of the underlying drivers of repeated human behaviour is feedback. In order to get a new behaviour happening every day, we need to ensure that we are providing positive feedback for completing that behaviour. Some simple strategies: a) If you do something everyday that you really enjoy and it makes you feel how you want to feel, awesome. If you have a small step that will lead your to the change you desire, slot that small step in before you do the current thing that you like. Before I watch this episode of whatever, I will knock out my five pushups. Use it as a reward for completing your new behaviour. b) Set a weekly target for completing the new behaviour and if you hit that target, you reward yourself with something you enjoy - one hour of complete guilt-free trash TV. c) Use your accountability buddies. Keep them updated with your progress and let them shower you with praise when you smash your target.

Jeffrey Allen Deepti Chandak Editor

Tell us more about your journey as an energy practitioner I got interested in energy work when I was in college about 30 years ago. I started playing with energy, because I felt something happening around it. I didn’t get deeply into energy work until about 10 years later when I started training at a school which trains you how to use your psychic abilities, your energy channeling abilities and so on. I was working at that time as a Computer Scientist. I worked with Fortune 500 companies, worked with Government, worked with startups, and I had a great career going on. My side gig was doing energy work, looking at the energy behind things, and I used it for everything, in meetings at work, finding a parking space, making my travel plans work well, and practically everything else I was involved with. It was really fun. People began asking me to teach them FACE MAGAZINE

18

about energy, and I was resisting for a long time. But 5 years later (15 years ago) I finally started teaching about energy as a side hobby to my full-time job. Soon after, I let my job go and went full time in energy work. I just knew I needed to do this. Here I am 15 years later where I have done 100s of workshops in countries around the world. I ran my own company in Japan teaching intuition, healing and channeling classes, and now I have two very successful online training products with Mindvalley. It is a super fun and fulfilling experience to see the impact that the energy work has on normal people. “What a Great way to help people. How can someone become more spiritually fit? Answer: You need to work on gaining awareness of how you operate in time, space, mind, emotions, motion, body, spirituality and how you interact with other people. Without this awareness, you feel like life is happening to you, but with it, you can pick up spiritual skills more easily and apply them to your life. You feel more connected, you are more open to new ideas, and you can be more in the flow. This gives a deeper experience of life and an easier way for positive things to happen. How can an average person live a spirit driven lifestyle? Anybody can live a spirit driven lifestyle; what it takes is practice using your awareness in a new way. You start to look at things with an enhanced awareness, seeing the energy behind things. There are multiple levels of awareness that are happening at the same time, and you can

choose to look at the bigger picture and respond accordingly. This gives you much broader opportunities to respond to things in live, and it can change your future dramatically.

How is health, fitness and happiness changing in 2020 and beyond ? We are expanding what these actually mean. When I was young health and fitness was mostly a mental thing (are you in your right mind or are you going to live a long life). There wasn’t much focus on exercising, eating healthy food and so on. Now it is very different. Everyone has the idea that I need to have a strong mind & be mentally fit, and I should also have a strong body & be physically fit. Now this awareness is expanding into spiritual fitness too. People are now looking to relax, do yoga or meditation, to increase the quality of life rather than just the quantity of things in their life. In 10 to 20 years down the line people will also begin to focus on emotional fitness. When people start taking responsibility for being emotionally balanced, that will really change the world. So our view of health and fitness is expanding, and the definition of happiness is changing. Rather than just being about material things, it’s now more about more having a healthy body, peaceful mind, good friends around. We’re changing our perception of how one can be happier. How can one be the most graceful energetically? By having higher levels of awareness which means practicing using different types of awareness and tuning in on

different levels of awareness to listen to the world around you. When you are able to operate in this way, your life becomes easier, you clear your patterns and create more abundance for yourself. Interestingly, being more graceful also improves your material world. What’s your advice for a starter? The most important thing you need to do is to have your own personal experiences with energy and higher awareness. Reading a book or listening to a podcast is not going to give you much awareness. Once you start experimenting with energy and awareness, your life will start to change through these experiences. After all, higher awareness should be fun and you will find your way much more quickly once you being to play around with it. If you are interested in learning more about energy work, have a look at the energy starter kit on Jeffrey’s website https://www.iamjeffreyallen.com/ and also you can deep dive into his Duality energy training programme and finally experience Unlocking Transcendence a 60 days programme on spiritual fitness.

Happiness

You don’t need to do anything beyond finding your own love for life.

No matter how big of a mission you feel like you have, it’s not the source of your happiness, it’s the product of it. You’re a walking signpost of what’s possible for others. Your strength inspires strength. Your courage inspires courage. Your joy inspires joy. Take as long as you need to find this love for your existence. Do whatever it takes. Be extreme if that’s what is required, even if others won’t understand. Because eventually you’ll arrive. You’ll remember why you came. And it’ll all be worth it.

Career accomplishment you are most proud about?

I

feel most proud of my decision to choose dance and make it a career. I consider that as an accomplishment in itself. To me dance was a luxury and I never thought it could become a career for me. Winning Dance India Dance was the turning point in my life.

What is your health and fitness regime? I believe in eating light. I am a vegetarian so my options are pulses, fruits and vegetables since I avoid rice and bread for all my meals. Yoga, Cross Fit, Pilates and dance practice is my fitness regime. My mantra is “Eat less Live more” What is your beauty regime? Eating and sleeping right are a big part of how you appear. It’s pretty simple actually, i keep my face washed and clean, very basic moisturizing and staying hydrated all day.

What do you regret most in life?

I have nothing in this life to regret. I couldn’t get better than this. I am super duper grateful and blessed to be where I am as a dancer today.

How was the last decade. What will you remember it most for? Message for her fans for 2020. It was magical. They were the most incredible 10 years of my life. Winning the Dance reality show, working as a choreographer with a genius like Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

Working closely with Deepika Padukone, Katrina Kaif, Ranbir Kapoor in films. It is an unbelievable dream Best thing that has happened to me is Nritya Shakti Studio, I consider it as my baby. Seeing the passion in students everyday who come to learn takes me back to my days when I started learning. It makes me the happiest. I am brand new in the beauty industry and it is very exciting for me to learn about it and share what I have learnt about make up in the last 10 years of my experience of being on camera.

What is in your shopping bag always? In my bag I always have a lip balm, hand cream, my phone, wallet and a pen that my dad gifted me.

What’s the best compliment you’ve received and you remember till date ? I am not good at receiving compliments well. I just find it unreal when little girls and boys come

A moment where I felt like Oh My God what’s happening was : I was working on a song “Kamli” as an assistant choreographer in the film Dhoom, I was performing Katrina’s part in front of Aamir Khan sir so he could give his reactions on camera. What has been your greatest extravagance?

when you are with a bunch of mad people it can’t get better than this.

My travel to New York for further studies in dance. It was something I wanted for years and years and I still look forward to going abroad and training more.

I have never ever laughed and enjoyed a trip like i did in this trip. We took a mini bus and traveled to so many places, hiked and did the craziest things.

Who has been your biggest teacher?

About her dance studio. (Details and her vision)

My father and my sister Neeti Mohan have been my teachers forever. They are always involved in all of my decisions.

Nritya Shakti Studio is a home to all dancers. We believe in offering an experience to dancers of all levels and backgrounds.

Who is your inspiration?

We announced “Intensive Training Program two years back which received alot of popularity. It is a customizable program where students can choose from wide pool of styles offered such as Hip Hop, Contemporary, Indian classical, Urban and many more.

I have recently learned who my inspiration is. It is planet Earth. I am incomplete awe of how this planet is alive alone in this solar system. It is a miracle how Earth wants to survive inspite of so many challenges from outside and within. And I relate to it so much and I get inspired to fight like this planet Earth.

Your favourite travel experiences?

I believe we have the best teachers in this country who are internationally trained and have years of experience in teaching. I love all the teachers for all the time they invest in students before and after the class counseling them.

Traveling with my friends to Uttarakhand have been my favorite travel experiences. I love mountains and beaches both. But JAN 2020 25

For Q1, the two firms will be investing $300,000 in their marketing campaign towards the EV adoption in the Middle East and will launch day one of EVRT Dubai 2020 edition on 25th March, 2020. The road trip is set to cover numerous exciting sights around the United Arab Emirates, showcasing electric vehicles from around the world to accelerate the

growth of EV adoption and highlight the many benefits of smarter mobility. After running EVRT events in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, Generation.e is ready to transform the event into the ‘World’s Greatest Electric Vehicle Road Trip’. EVRT Dubai 2020 will select only 7 electric vehicle manufacturers to participate in the 2020 event, and 100 participants with a shared vision from across the globe will come together. With 25 electric vehicles driving in convoy across the UAE, EVRT Dubai 2020 will also play host to the roll out of new charging stations along the route.

Travel Ben Pullen, Co-Founder & CEO at Generation.e, said: “Bigger and better by all means, EVRT Dubai 2020 will build on the successes we have had in previous years with this year’s event to gather the latest and greatest electric vehicles from across the globe. This year is all about showcasing the choice that business, government, and consumers all have to look forward to as the world’s vehicle manufactures, both new and old, launch their electric vehicle models into the market. The abundance of choice for end users will now be the main challenge for electric vehicles, which signals the sign of a new era for EV this decade.” This year’s edition will also include a competition for participants and vehicle manufactures through the World

Regeneration Challenge, a global event at Ras Al Khaimah’s Jebel Jais mountain, that aims to draw attention towards the regenerative breaking benefits of electric vehicles. The car that regenerates the most amount of energy driving downhill, will be awarded the title of World Regeneration Champion – proving its dedication to technological innovation and advanced engineering. EVRT Dubai 2020, with its broad influencer base, is the ideal platform for global manufacturers and distributors who currently possess and those who plan to launch electric vehicles into the line-up in Jorge Bialade, General Manager at YallaMotor, the coming years. Jorge Bialade, General Manager at YallaMotor, added: “We have been partnering with the team at Generation.e since their inception four years ago and are glad to position ourselves at the forefront of cleaner mobility in the region. With an WWincreased appetite for electric vehicles from car manufacturers and buyers alike, this year’s event is set to be the most exciting so far.” Generation.e’s mission is to inspire transformation to smarter mobility for the creation of better connected and sustainable societies.

performance by rising Egyptian singer Sanaa Nabil (February 6) is also sure to draw the crowds. Here, Dr Ronald Perlwitz, Head of Music, Arts Department, Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, shares everything you need to know about the ninth season of the Abu Dhabi Classics What’s in store for music and culture fans at Abu Dhabi Classics? The ninth season of Abu Dhabi Classics promises much in terms of Western and Arabic classical music, bringing a rich and diverse programme across Abu Dhabi from January 28 to February 7. The line-up of global musical talent is truly eclectic and

arguably the strongest to date, featuring world-renowned orchestras and soloists from Europe to the Middle East, inspirational ballerinas, and renowned artists from the Arab World. Furthermore, the ninth season of Abu Dhabi Classics coincides with the 250th birth anniversary of the legendary composer Ludwig van Beethoven, and we will be paying homage to his rich musical legacy during the season. How will Beethoven’s anniversary be celebrated? On February 5, the globally renowned Hamburg Symphony Orchestra will perform Beethoven’s world-famous 9th Symphony, a piece which is seen as marking a turning point in musical history, ushering in the 19th century’s ‘Romantic’ period. The concert at du Arena on Yas Island will be an

unmissable experience for fans of music and culture, with more than 100 musicians and a chorus of 70 singers performing a wonderfully uplifting piece, which represents humanity, tolerance and unity The Hamburg Symphony Orchestra will also be performing on February 4 at the Cultural Foundation, treating the audience to a Chamber Music Programme. The performance will feature the Clarinet Quintet in B minor

by Johannes Brahms (who was born in Hamburg in 1833), one of the most acclaimed pieces of chamber music which premiered in 1891, in addition to Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme. In a further tribute to Beethoven, the exceptional orchestra will perform the composer’s Variations on La Ci Darem la Mano, derived from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Don Giovanni, written for flute, clarinet and bassoon. It is sure to be a very special evening and, we believe, a fitting tribute to the masterful Beethoven. The 11-day classical musical event begins with ‘David Fray and Friends’ at the Cultural Foundation on January 28. The performance will see four of the world’s leading pianists Fray, Emmanuel Christien, Audrey Vigoreux, and Jacques Rouvier - play Bach’s Concertos for two, three and four pianos alongside the prestigious Geneva Chamber Orchestra. French pianist Lise de la Salle will perform Dances, a programme exploring dance rhythms in classical music, on February 1. The show will include Ravel’s Valses Nobles et Sentimentales along with Stravinsky’s Tango, Bartok’s Romanian Folk Dances and Debussy’s Mazurka plus pieces from Ginastera and Piazzolla and others inspired by American dance culture. Visitors will also be able to enjoy some of the outstanding talent from across our region. On February 6,

young Egyptian singer Sanaa Nabil will perform an evening titled ‘Laylat Saltana’ at the Cultural Foundation, accompanied by elite Egyptian group, Cordes Croisées. Sanaa rose to fame through the reality TV show ‘Arabs Got Talent’, however, she comes from a rich line of musical heritage – she is related to legendary Egyptian singer Umm Kulthum and started voice training aged just 12 with Maestro Salim Sahhab at the Cairo Opera House. This season’s programme is packed full of musical heritage. Magida El Roumi’s headline show will be a spectacular and fitting finale on February 7 at du Arena on Yas Island. Magida’s beautiful, crystal-clear voice and extraordinary range is lauded and loved the world over, while she is renowned for her variety of classical Arabic music, Arabic pop and songs based on poems written by renowned Arabic poets. What is new about this year’s event? This year we will be holding two of our events at the du Arena with Magida El Roumi and the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra performing at FACE MAGAZINE

the Yas Island venue on February 7 and February 5 respectively. Our expansion to this larger venue reinforces the reputation Abu Dhabi Classics has earned as the most influential and prestigious classical music programme in the Middle East, featuring a worldrenowned line-up of talent. It is also a statement that Classical music can be played in popular venues across the UAE. This season’s programme demonstrates how DCT Abu Dhabi continually brings some of the leading contemporary artists in the fields of Arabic and Western classical music to the emirate, enhancing Abu Dhabi’s position as the culture, music and arts capital of the region. What are you trying to achieve with Abu Dhabi Classics? Abu Dhabi Classics has become a highlight on the UAE’s cultural

Abu Dhabi Classics has become a highlight on the UAE’s cultural calendar, and this ninth season continues our efforts with another line-up of internationally acclaimed classical musicians and performers from all over the world. We strive to bring world-class talent to Abu Dhabi, to expand the cultural dialogue and to entertain a knowledgeable audience eager to experience the world-class

cultural offerings annually. At the same time, we always follow an educational approach. We organise masterclasses, pre-concert talks and invite schoolchildren to rehearsals. For the rehearsal of the 9th Symphony, for example, children from the Emirate’s schools will perform the Ode to Joy with the Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Cambreling. To sum it up, we strongly believe in the values of creativity, cultural understanding and peace that classical music carries, and we are looking forward to continuing those and developing them, in particular with local talent.

Feeding

our mind this time Saakshi Gupta

O

ften ignored the importance of food for mental health is a topic that needs as much attention as it can get. It’s not easy to imagine the communication between the stomach and the brain, but they are talking and they are talking a lot. We all know about our hunger pangs and about our “hangry” moods of the day. But it goes much further than that. Not only does food change our mood and metabolism but it even touches our everyday lives where it supports our mental health which is of utmost importance in this ever-increasing stress. (Picture.1)(Guy and the plate) For most of our knowledge the go-to for our mental health issues has always been medication, yet the impacts of nutrition on these issues are yet to be acknowledged but are enormous. The evidence indicates that food plays an important contributing role in the development, management, and prevention of specific mental health problems such as depression, schizophrenia, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and Alzheimer’s disease. Something as small as having a cup of turmeric milk at night every day

can do wonders for our skin and gives us a sound sleep which equates to the sedatives and anti-anxiety pills we try to procure. Changing methods of farming have also introduced higher levels and different types of fat into our diet. (turmeric milk cup picture) For example, chickens now reach their slaughter weight twice as fast as they did thirty years ago, which has changed the nutritional profile of the meat. Whereas a chicken carcass used to be 2% fat, it is now 22%. Also, the diet fed to chickens has changed dramatically, which has reduced omega-3 fatty acids and increased omega-6 fatty acids in chicken meat. Similarly, the diet fed to farmed fish is changing the ratio of fatty acids in the fish we eat. We have more and more research raising awareness on the link between food and mental health. This subject still under the covers is now presenting itself as a solution and as an excelsior for the psychological and physiological aspects of our life. There is an urgent need for policy-makers, practitioners, industry, service users and consumers to give proper credence to the role that nutrition plays in mental health. When looking at the bigger picture we realize mental happiness and health is the only thing that matters eventually. So let’s start eating for our mind from this time.
