Note

Dear Readers, We are at the brink of a cold, distant and lonely world. But thanks to the technological advancements we shall be able to cope up with the challenges and come out strong. One can’t stress enough our collective responsibility to offer our best to the world. And this is an absolute requirement in COVID ridden times. If we don’t understand and appreciate each other , there will be a lot of people suffering from depression. We need to counter the constant fake news and lies and strengthen the truth. Let’s find people waging lonely battles for the good of society and support them. Give a smile, a nod of encouragement, find hidden potential and nurture it. Let’s be charitable and empower the world with goodness and peace!

From a very early age, I have learned one small thing. “Great things in business are never done by one person they are done by a team of people” by-Steve jobs Highly creative and with the urge to work in a stimulating environment, encouraging design and thought-provoking contents, I have started my career with a background of MBA in Marketing and Branding. Catching up with the change from print to digital media, I launched the digital magazine “F.A.C.E Fashion Art Culture Entertainment F.A.C.E is a curated experience that highlights and celebrates Global heritage, its exciting evolution and its many million possibilities are seen through the modern lens of fashion, art, culture and entertainment. And provide its readers with compelling content, new trends, innovative ideas, inspiration and the new dimension of the media world. From emerging flavors and ingredient to new ideas buzzing in the industry, it promises to collect what’s hot and trending in the industry and deliver it in a format that keeps you informed and interested. The current world situation has a lot of us down and filled with anxiety, well, in fact, I believe this is the perfect time to make changes and make that shift towards our personal, economic, political, and especially environmental situations. This month we have focussed on topics from such varied scenarios and knitted them in context to Fashion, Art, Culture, and Entertainment. We have brought to you celebrities, trainers, environmentalists, eco-friendly fashion brands and also shed light on sustainability in what we eat and wear. I hope you have as much fun reading it as much as we did bring this issue to you. I pray we can all move towards sustainable living in our small ways and help the world situation. Until then. Out of the many talents you possess, which one do you enjoy practicing the most? What I enjoy the most is helping people. It is a unique feeling. My desire to help others comes from the fact that I always felt happy. I know it may seem strange to some, but my close friends from childhood will confirm it, I always felt good, whatever the events. While trying to analyze why I always felt happy, I realized something important. Happiness does not come from the outside, but from inside, from our thought system. At the time I had no money, no muscular body, no real

FACE MAGAZINE resources, yet I was always happy, and I spent my time analyzing why so that people could model to turn this thought system and find happiness.

Therefore I consider it my real-life mission: helping people to feel good physically and mentally, to control their emotions, to be happy. I now wish deep down to go even further, and share these secrets of happiness nationally and globally, to make people feel this state of deep bliss.

My real life mission: helping people to feel good physically and mentally, to control their emotions, to be happy.

What was the aim behind The David Michigan Academy?

What is next in the line for David Michigan?

The Michigan Academy is a very unique growth platform whose mission is to teach many life skills such as personal development, business, fitness, and many transformational and expanding concepts and ideas that our traditional education system ignores or simply doesn’t teach.

My plan for the next two to three years is twofold. First, I want to keep growing my personal development and fitness online academy I’ve created, the “Michigan Academy”, to help as many people as possible around the world. I already have more than 200,000 students divided among 181 countries and I want to help 1 million students.

What did you start your career with? Was creating a platform for selfdevelopment always in the plan? I started my career by coaching and helping people individually in all aspects of their life (sport, work, business, relationships) and doing hypnotherapy, which I love. And with the rise of social media and the fact that people kept telling me I should help more people, I decided to go all-in and to create my platform for selfdevelopment. The Michigan Academy simply changed my life forever, because now I have so much leverage and I can begin to help tons of people.

And then, I want to keep traveling with my movie director, Jim Winter, to produce amazing videos around the world to promote tourism in exotic and unknown places. We have already worked for Polynesia, Argentina, Norway, and Morocco and they are many places we want to shoot in. We have tons of new concepts coming soon to reinforce the visual aspects of these incredible landscapes shoot in our videos (magic illusions, personal development voice inspiration).

What is your advice to people struggling in businesses and with mental health in this pandemic situation? Don’t give up and stay always focused on your goals, dreams, and aspirations. To do that, the best advice I can give you is that you have to know what you want in the first place. Don’t think yet how you will get it, that comes later, just decide what you want, being as clear as you can be.

FACE MAGAZINE

22

FACE MAGAZINE

Then you have to think about why you want it. Your why has to be found deep down inside you, like a burning reason, stronger and more powerful than anything, whatever people may think about it or you.

what you acquire throughout the years is valuable, but it is not your greatest value. The greatest value is what you become.

Now, once you have a clear path towards your goals, you can work on your figure. It has to be something that you love. You always have to think long term and not short term. The short term is very appealing, but you will fall fast because it is not sustainable. By having a long term vision, you will be happy building your figure every day, even if you don’t have good short terms results. But in the long term, you will be ahead and so proud of you. So keep developing yourself every day: your personality, your attitude, your skills and try to work with a variety of people. Because you will attract success, in whatever areas you wish for, by the person you become And always keep in mind that your greatest value in life is not what you acquire. Of course, what you acquire throughout the years is valuable, but it is not your greatest value. The value is what you become. JULY 2020

Always respond the comments or your fans. Even if it takes time, find a way to do it. FACE MAGAZINE

24

What would you suggest to artists/bloggers early in their careers to develop a fan base as big as yours? Always respond to the comments or your fans. Even if it takes time, find a way to do it. And do your best to find the positive side of people in your community. Always find the best part that exists in each person and approach directly to that. You will not always see the truth, but the possibilities. Just encourage them to do their best and it will quickly become “their truth.” Appreciate them more, feel them more, and give them a little more value every day. And finally, don’t be afraid to innovate and take risks, even if you make mistakes. Successful people make far more mistakes than others. Because they dared to try and risk, and therefore they learned something from their failures. You always learn from mistakes and experience, making small adjustments over time. Devote yourself with all your heart without either reducing or restricting yourself. Believe that you will improve, and I guarantee that you will succeed.

FACE MAGAZINE

It’s not easy to keep up with workouts and fitness with the current situation and is easy to lose motivation. What would you advice to people struggling to be fit and building a body during these times? The most important thing to be fit is to have healthy habits. And to have good habits, you need to manage your time well and to be disciplined. It will reward you and give you more freedom. So, to organize yourself well, you need to set aside at least an hour a day to do what you love in your life. Do whatever you love deeply, no matter what your daily homework is. If you don’t have time to do it, take this time. Because if you don’t often do what you love, at the heart of your essence, you may often be disappointed. Always be patient and take one step after another. Your success is not based on the number of steps you need. Because you may experience a disadvantage in step ten. However, your success may be hidden right behind. You will never know how close it is unless you take an extra step.

JULY 2020

25

What was the motivation behind your physique, can you please tell anyone who is aspiring to have a body like yours, about the path you followed? My motivation comes from 2 factors. The first one is that is so important to work on your body because you can have the sharpest mind ever, you won’t go very far in life when your body doesn’t follow. And I am telling you all that being obsessed with the mind. And my second motivation comes with the urgency of living. You have to realize that you do not have unlimited time to live on earth, and that’s why it is always good to have at least a small sense of urgency within you because life goes very fast. So don’t waste time and you won’t have any regrets. If you want to quit your job, don’t wait. If you love someone, let her or him know. If you want to live close to the beach, start to plan your move right now. If you want to get in shape, eat better, and do a sports activity today. If you want to date someone, never be shy about it or you will deeply regret it. Today is the day for you to wake up, to be more self-aware, and to start to take a lot more action to realize your dreams. Don’t let unfulfilled desires and fantasies haunting you on your deathbed.

Did you start your career with acting? Tell us about your journey. Although, I have always been interested in acting but did not start my career with it. Until my 20s, I did not go out much and spent my time reading everything I found about personal development, fitness, nutrition, mind while playing sports every day. I was very lonely. I wanted to focus on myself to develop a maximum of capacities because I always aimed at the long term rather than the “rewards” in the short term. I wanted to fully develop and be an expert in all the areas that interested me. My mother, very athletic, always encouraged me to do a maximum of sport (judo, football, bodybuilding) while my father was more focused on mental techniques (personal development, healing) and unconsciously transmitted excellent confidence in me. I was attracted to self-improvement. I love the idea that you can train hard, without depending on anyone, and succeed at any time. I started to go to the gym at 17 years (I have now 13 years of training), and after 8 years of training, at 25, I decided to work in the fitness and self-help industry. And then turned into acting, so it was rather a natural continuation and transition.

You have so many dimensions to your personality from the world of entertainment to cricket to fitness you’ve come a long way, what were some of the pivotal moments? I keep needing new avenues to express my creativity, I’m not good at many things but I gave it a shot. I started with entertainment and acting on television many years ago and somewhere a little boredom set in and I was ready to take a sabbatical when Cricket came my way. I auditioned for it and became a part of cricket ever since for about 10-12 years successfully. I could have continued to do so but I wasn’t doing it with a host broadcast anymore and I didn’t want to fall into a bracket of being one of those perineal guests on news channels so I decided to call that quits. Even with fitness I never thought I would make my space or anything like that, I just gave a lot of energy and consistency to it and suddenly it became a very important and integral part of my life and has been a very wonderful journey. I’ve had a lot of beautiful opportunities that I’m very grateful for and some of them have worked out and some of them haven’t, that’s all a part of the journey and living.

Tell us what turned you into a fitness fanatic. I feel whatever the motivation may be or whatever gets you into fitness as long as it becomes a part of your life is what matters. In 2008 I was invited to be a part of a reality show called Khatron Ke Khiladi and my only aim was to be a strong contender and for the first time, I got a trainer to train me. I only had a month to train from the time I got the show and I wanted to be at my best to go there and try and win, that’s what got me into fitness. Sadly, I didn’t win the show but what that phase of my life did for me is what got the fitness to become a way of life. Even when I was pregnant after putting on 22 kgs I lost it in exactly 6 months post-delivery because fitness had become a way of life and most importantly for me, I didn’t know life any other way.

What trends have you observed in the world of entertainment? How do you foresee it evolving? It’s been 25 years from when I started, I joined at a time when there were only three channels Doordarshan, Zee TV, and Star Plus, now there are multiple channels, various avenues and lot of work for everyone. Also earlier there used to be this big divide between television and movies but now the lines have blurred and there is a third-platform like Netflix, amazon prime, Hotstar, etc. as well which has grown exponentially making sure there’s enough work for everyone by producing some fabulous content. It’s a good time for actors with talent, grit, and determination generally speaking Covid-19 notwithstanding. over the years the greatest evolvement is that the lines have blurred between actors on television web and movies now you see people who do films happily work on television and vice versa and with the addition of the third platform there is work for everybody.

The live art session with veteran senior artist Madhuri Bhaduri received a very overwhelming response., tell us about your experience with dabbling in art. I’m a big fan of Madhuri Bhaduri as she is a brilliant artist. I saw her work for the first time in my mother’s home. We’ve loved her works over the years and all of my mom’s friends and family have Madhuri’s works in pride of place in their homes. It was extremely exciting for me to be a part of this live session with an artist as accomplished as she is. We did a tutorial of sorts where I got the chance to learn from the best and it’s an opportunity that one can’t let go. I was so thrilled to get these precious moments with her especially in times of this lockdown when there is more of a demand to learn new things and pick a hobby, it indeed was a very valuable session for me and for whoever had the chance to watch it. JULY 2020

You come from a background of avid art connoisseurs and collectors...how do you personally perceive art and what appeals to you the most? I don’t know if I come from a background of avid art connoisseurs and collectors but I do have people with great taste in my family. I have a cousin who is an architect and interior designer who also loves Madhuri’s work. Like I said I don’t understand much about art but I do have a couple of pieces up on my walls and for me, art has to appeal to the eye and it has to do something to you. When you look at a painting or a work of art, it has to please you and the eye and if there is a work of art that makes you feel that way for me that’s most important. It need not be a super expensive piece of art or a well-known artist too. FACE MAGAZINE

What are you working on and how have you adapted to the ‘New Normal’? During this time of the lockdown I’ve been doing a lot of things to keep myself busy, God has been very kind. I have been a part of many webinars and live sessions which I did for various brands; be it speaking to people for a motivational session or doing a workout a lot of corporates have approached me to do 45 mins workout sessions with their employees or dealers to keep them motivated and fit. I’ve done a couple of those along with the motivational talks and that’s been keeping me busy during this period. My sudden interest in art has made me dabble in certain mediums where I give myself one canvas a week and it’s only been two weeks and posts my session with Madhuri my interest has grown. I’ve been cooking, doing lots of projects with my son, exercising, etc there’s been plenty to keep me busy. Post lockdown I have a show coming up for a channel which is an interview-based show which I’ll be hosting we were supposed to start shooting it before the lockdown but then it’s all pushed forward to once things open up for me to start shooting. Also sitting at home and on the phone, I shot a commercial for Lifebuoy where I’ve signed on with them as well as the brand ambassador for one of their products, so I’ve been reasonably busy and I’m very grateful for all the work that’s come my way during this lockdown, I’m just hoping for things to open up soon so that we can get back to normal. I’ve observed this lockdown and it been over eighty days since I’ve stepped out of my house as the last day was 15th March. I think the new normal is going to be with all of us stepping out with extreme precautions, smaller units shooting, anything and anyone unnecessary will be cut out of the system. So I think we’re going to now have to start stepping out of the house and living with the fact that COVID exists and that is going to be the new normal, we’ve just got to be careful, hygienic and take care of ourselves in a way that we haven’t in the past. Who or what inspired you to become an actor? Tell us about your journey.

I

was always into drama and sports in school and college, although it wasn’t my dream but rather a passion back then. I started my journey accidentally, becoming miss India was bliss, then becoming the first Indian to win 7 titles internationally was an honor along with which then I got into professional modeling and eventually into acting. It was like God had planned it all for me Meryl Streep and Rekha inspire me even today.

What’s your dream? Where is this path heading for you? I want to be happy and of course, build my parents a dream house, make them travel the world. But for myself, I want to start an interior design company and have my organic beauty brand for skin essentials. In the end, I want to be healthy, happy, and married with kids.

What do you value the most about your partner? His commitment and his attitude: no matter what and always. His love and his honesty. That’s Kanwar for me. Career accomplishment you are most proud of? Being the first Indian to win 7 titles internationally at a pageant was my biggest achievement which still makes me proud of myself every day.

How was the last decade? What would you remember the most? That there was a time we could all go out and meet each other without any fuss. The last decade has been eventful and beautiful for me. I would remember everything about it because that time is never coming back again. I found myself and what I loved the most.

What’s the best compliment you’ve received and you remember to date? Being told that I am kind, loving, and committed, were Upcoming projects that you are looking forward to. My Netflix projects. Two feature films. One show.

How are you spending your Quarantine time? I am being productive. Learning how to cook and bake. Playing card games and board games with my family. Gardening, working out. Spending time with family after really long for so long . Reading, watching Netflix, and just sleeping. Working from home as well which is a little unnatural since my profession had involved a lot of traveling for me.

How important is woman empowerment according to you? Women empowerment is extremely important because we have been pushed around and not given are dues. Hence it’s about women being at par with men in everything and anything. Cerebral equality. Women are standing up for themselves as no one else did. It’s time to take our power back in our hands. We are called Durga Lakshmi Saraswati kali and many other names. So then why treat the goddesses any different. Women are just asking for their freedom of being without being judged and even if you do judge us now it doesn’t affect us anymore. Women empowerment is about accepting ourselves for who we are than being ashamed of it. It’s About to be it at home or work we are looked at like equals not down upon and maybe people should realize women in power have ruled better and longer than men. Monarchy says so too. But we are just looking for being equals. Don’t take away our identities let us be and we all live in harmony. FACE MAGAZINE

How did your journey start as an Entrepreneur?

I

started my journey as an Entrepreneur when I was 13 years old. I remember that my younger brother and I found out that you can build your website and let people advertise on the page where you could make money out of any clicks from the viewers of the website. That was the beginning. My brother, Omid Romal Johnsen, and I started to figure out how to create a website and what would it take. We were rushing home after the school end and while he was researching for how to it, I was figuring out how to design it. We succeeded after 2 months of work to make one of the most boring websites and thankfully it got approved. We were so proud and took all of our friends, family, known and unknown people on the street to go to our website and click on the advertisement banners. We were able to track how much money we were making on the Advertisement Management page.

When we told our parents that we’ve made money from our website, they just laughed at said that its just digital money. After a month’s work, we got our first payment on a cheque with my name and it felt like the beginning of an Era. FACE MAGAZINE

Tell us all about LetsPartii App. How are you keeping it relevant in pandemic time? In the last few years I’ve been traveling a lot and every time I was in a new city or a city I knew very well, I had the same issue every time. ‘’Where to go if you want to Party, see a Live show?’’ or something fun. I was searching on the internet, trying out Facebook, asking friends but I was never satisfied with the replies I got. I was annoyed that even the Native people of that city didn’t even know what was happening in their city. Then the idea came to my mind. Let me make the platform for all the headaches people face when they need to have fun and create the ‘’Pain Killer’’ for them. That’s how LetsPartii was born. The world’s biggest Party app & Much more. LetsPartii was growing at super speed, we were live in 50+ countries. With more than 3000 Events and Live shows, the app becomes The Worlds Biggest Party App. When Covid-19 hit the world, we knew that we have to change a few things in the app to make it relevant for the future after Covid-19. The thing is that as humans we are very strong creatures, we adapt to any kind of situation and find a way to get back to what and where we want to be. The world’s situation is just a set back for a few months, things are already going back to normal in a very slow and steady speed. We have done our homework and LetsPartii App is stronger now than before and we have taken measures for any kind of outburst like Covid-19 in the future. Hopefully never, but if there is another kind of Covid-19 situation again, LetsPartii will get the Party to your home.

What’s your message to someone who has a dream, has failed numerous times, and is feeling beaten down. As a child, we Crawl before we walk and walk before we can run.

JULY 2020

39

Don’t ever forget that you’ve already been through a ‘’Failing and feeling beaten down’’ situation since you were a kid. And guess what, you were eventually able to run anyway. My point is that every young person and young Entrepreneur wants a recipe for success, wants to know what to do if things get difficult. Guess what, life is hard, life is difficult, we have to try to deal with it. As an entrepreneur know what you want to do, what you are doing for it, and where you’re lacking. Stop asking why to accept things are tough now more than ever, the competition is bigger and ruthless now. Accept the challenge, accept that its okay to fail, its a part of the process, accept that you don’t know everything and once you are clear on your mind, things might get easier.

Your advice for aspiring entrepreneurs. Its always good to believe in yourself and your idea, but an idea is nothing without a Plan, Research, Budget Setup, and a Timeline for what to do and when. You need to think that it might be my idea, it might be my company and everything should be in my control and but you have to behave and work as you’re an employee for someone else and you have to pay house rent and your food depends on how you work.

What is your view on empowerment? Empowerment is a process that challenges our assumptions about the way we see things and how they can be. Our basic assumptions about power, helping, achieving, and succeeding are being challenged by the word ‘’Empowerment’’. Before we demystify the concept of empowerment, we need to understand the concept broadly to be clear about how and why we narrow our focus of empowerment for specific programs and projects. My view in empowerment is that the case is different for any individual. In my case Empowerment means sharing the authority with people I trust and I believe in reaching the goal faster and better. Instead of being a ‘’Boss’’ I would rather be the leader and share the success and happiness with everyone involved.

Chef I Kelvin

How did your Chef Journey start? was raised in restaurants. My father is a restaurateur, and while I started cooking at a very young age, my first official job in a restaurant was as a dishwasher for my father’s restaurant. He made me work my way up and prove myself before I was ever allowed to actually cook in the kitchen. From there, I went to culinary school at Kendall College in Chicago,

Interviewd By

DEEPTI CHANDAK

won a few cooking championships, followed by a passion for cooking to Belgium, Canada, the United States, and eventually India. I have worked for two hospitality companies in Mumbai and moved to Delhi at the end of 2019 as the Chef Partner of Dadel and Kiko-Ba. One of my favorite things about cooking in Delhi is the proximity to so many incredible farms and farmers doing fantastic work. Everyone seems to be oozing with passion and its infectious. Interacting directly with farmers. I’m a massive fan of building long term relationships with farmers and working towards a product that they are proud of, is purchased at a fair price, and that is sometimes even customized for my menu. In the past, I’ve worked with cheesemakers to perfect burrata, helped hydroponic green growers perfect their salad, and persuaded a farmer that picking of vegetables at their peak was better for him than waiting for them to grow to their largest - when he thought that he would make the most profit. If we’re willing to pay a fair price, we will get a higher quality product. Before lockdown, I had been scouring local farms for ingredients I haven’t cooked with before or that weren’t easily available in Mumbai. I’m currently very excited about baby heirloom corn supplied in the husk. It takes me back to this summer picking corn at the farms in Toronto where we spent the majority of the summer last year.

What are you happiest cooking? My ideal meal would include a Chinese broth, a lot of sushi - specifically uni and toro, something super spicy and slurpy like noodles, and rounded out, of course, with something sweet like freshly baked Malden salt chocolate chip cookies with a side of mint chocolate chip ice cream. What are the 3 main skills for a chef to have? Humility, focus, patience. Do you follow trends in food? Do any trends excite you? Less about trends and more about influences - my family influences my cooking in major ways, but so do so many other things - best bites I’ve eaten when traveling, the smell of my mother’s congee, the sound of the utensils hitting a plate when a diner is eating, the list goes on and on. Gluten-free pancakes were created for Andrea, but what you didn’t know was that I used gluten-free cupcakes that I was “testing” for Ellipsis as a way to woo her before we were dating. I baked my butt off to get that girl on a date. KelCakes were created while my wife was pregnant with our son and I had hit a bit of a “writer’s block” when it came to creativity. Andrea challenged me to bake something I loved, rather than something that was beautiful for Instagram or that we knew would sell, and that’s where KelCakes started from. They were messy and fun. You’ll see newborn Bodhi in many of my original KelCake videos and photos as he was always strapped to one of us in the restaurants from 10 days old onwards. You’ll see both Andrea and Bodhi’s influence on both of these menus too like the sweet potato gnocchi in broccoli cheddar sauce from Dadel and the heirloom baby corn from the robata grill at Kiko-Ba. The need for the hour is combating the climate crisis. Is there something you follow to contribute to the cause? While I was already cutting down my consumption of animal products then, this lockdown has given me an even bigger push to find nutritionally dense, balanced, plant-based options for my family. Our local farmers need us now more than ever to support them as many restaurants they grew for weren’t able to order the crops. JULY 2020

DEEPTI CHANDAK

FACE MAGAZINE

Our posts are very inspirational for a Travel buff like me, how did it all start? Was Holiday Swap a pre-planned project or happened on the way?

T

hank you for such kind words. I just try to keep it as real as possible on social media and seldom do paid sponsored posts. I like to say what I like and don’t like, and review things honestly without it being sponsored. It’s nice to add some reality to Instagram at times I think, as so many more people are craving reality - the ups and downs. Holiday Swap was never pre-planned, I used to work in investment banking, and after setting the Guinness World Record for being the youngest person to visit every country in the world I wanted to create a platform that allowed people to travel for cheaper. A true sharing economy platform.

Tell us more about how Holiday Swap works? What’s the concept and is it operational worldwide? We are worldwide, in 185 countries now. People match their homes and swap, paying just $1 per night. This means that the biggest cost of travel, the accommodation, is removed allowing us to save money and travel more. It has been called the ‘travel tinder’ by the business insider as people match based on their homes and then can be hosted or directly swap. Much cheaper.

JULY 2020

45

What’s your message to someone who has a dream.., has failed numerous times.., and is feeling beaten down. Keep going. It happens to all of us. A holiday swap has taken years to build to this point. It wasn’t an overnight success and took years from working 3 jobs since the age of 15 to traveling the world and learning about myself, to working in banking to get the company off the ground in the first place. Every day I fail, everyone does, but if you have a dream you stick with it and use failures as a learning experience.

What the value of mentorship in your opinion? Do you have a mentor? I don’t have a mentor and don’t value it. I think you can have people that you take look up to and take advice from but that we all have to create our path and make mistakes along the way as part of a learning experience. That’s what makes us and molds our journey. Sometimes we have to make those mistakes to grow.

Your advice for aspiring entrepreneurs.

FACE MAGAZINE

46

Stick with it. Accept the failures as a learning experience, craft out your path, and make mistakes that you learn from. Being an entrepreneur is hard. You don’t put yourself first - your business is first. It means missing out on social events and sometimes long days and nights of consistent grinding work to get to where you want to be. It’s not a glamorous lifestyle and if you’re comfortable with accepting this then you will go a long way pushing your passion.

FACE MAGAZINE

Future of travel industry according to you. What’s next for Holiday Swap considering the current situation? I think international travel will takes a few years to recover and people will be looking to save money now. The economic damage caused by lockdowns is huge, don’t underestimate that. This means demand for things like vacations will suffer and people will look for cheaper deals. At holiday swap we have seen a large increase in user interest as our platform saves users money. People will now still want to travel but be cost-aware more in the new economic climate. Not only is Holiday Swap affordable but it’s a great community as well. We are pushing domestic and regional travel now more which we are finding very popular.

Your favorite destinations and airlines. Favorite 3 countries are the USA, Italy, and Colombia. I love the food and diversity of all of them. The US for example has such great diversity from Alaska and Hawaii to the incredible national parks and the culture, music, and food in the South from Nashville to New Orleans. My favorite airlines are Etihad, Qatar and Singapore Airlines.

What according to you is empowerment in the new world? Making any kind of positive difference, whether that’s big or small. It doesn’t matter how many followers you have, you can make a difference with just one positive moment or opinion. In a world where we all have a voice on social media, empowerment is using that voice to stand up for what you believe in and making a positive impact on the world. JULY 2020

Since you experienced gender dysphoria as young a 3 years old, what suggestion would you give tobe parents in identifying this earlier and helping their child transition earlier?

I’

d suggest listening and talking. If you feel like something is going on in your child, trust your guts, do some research and try to get some professional help. It’s so important to start as early as possible as this is hard for their mind.

Do you still have moments of gender dysphoria even post the surgeries? If yes, how do you deal with them now? I’m pretty lucky that I never had to experience things like that. Maybe because I’m a strong character. Very offensive. In my opinion, the more offensive you are, the less surface for attack you give. Can I say it like that?

Somethings we take for granted like visiting a public bathroom are difficult for trans people. What are the other such challenges? How can society help in reducing them? We need society to accept the change as you are going through second puberty which is hard. Your body is changing, your voice is changing but maybe your ID still says female. This has to go faster.

FACE MAGAZINE

50

FACE MAGAZINE

I read that Aston Kutcher sent you a message. What are the other wonderful experiences you have had since transitioning? Yes that’s correct and at the beginning, I wasn’t sure if it was him but he sent congratulations after I got the Men’s Health Cover. Well, that was a crazy time. It went viral and everybody in the world was taking notice which I think was a huge step and maybe brought a little change for the community as well.

What are some less spoken about things that society should be aware of in terms of trans people? Don’t ask things you wouldn’t ask a non-trans person. Things like what’s in your pants or stuff like that. Just remember what you Momma taught you and everything will be okay. Normally, people are curious and it’s okay to ask, but think twice before getting rude.

How would you define your life today? Today I’m finally Ben. That’s the title of my book and that describes it best. I’m me. And I choose happiness. I have spoken about my journey and I am hoping it can inspire atleast one more person going through the same struggle as me to get through tough times. JULY 2020

Why social activism, sustainable fashion, and women empowerment are close to the World’s Top Fashion Influencer In the modern world, as we rethink our life and our businesses, a lot of people talk the talk when it comes to social causes, few walk the walk. And even fewer still lead the charge. Simonetta Lein is an edgy fashion icon and one of the world’s top influencer who has been flying the flag for social activism, women empowerment, and more environmentally conscious fashion industry long before it was fashionable to do so. Simonetta is named one of the top 5 fashion influencers in the world together with Anna Wintour, Donna Karan, DVF and Vera Wang and one of the 9 top power women in the world according to USA Today. She has also earned a reputation as a woman who believes in helping others be the best version of themselves, they can possibly be. As we are going through a historical phase of modern human history, Simonetta feels that we need to open up for each other otherwise we collapse as a society. I recently had an insightful conversation with Simonetta, here are the excerpts: You opened the NYFW Show for Stevie Boi, what message did you want to drive home with this collaboration?

SIMONETTA LEIN Interviewd By

DEEPTI CHANDAK

FACE MAGAZINE

72

Simonetta Lein: When I was asked to open the NYFW Show for luxury Fashion Designer Stevie Boi to the watching world, I found that our stories cross. We share a common desire to get this message of ‘Be Yourself’ across masses and encourage people to be not confined by trends, but rather follow their hearts, true nature, and personal style. The sunglasses range depicts a different style that stands out. It strengthens your belief that it’s okay to be unique. And given the current scenario where we see fear gripping everywhere, I think we must take this time to self-reflect, be at peace with our true selves, and reinvent our lives and businesses to adapt to these testing times. In a world where too many people follow the leader and are afraid to push the envelope and think outside of the box, we need to get innovative. In other words, your personal style

and life choices should come from within, and not be dictated by others. You live and breathe sustainability, tell us how you are blending fashion & sustainability? Simonetta Lein: I’ve worked closely with brands who believe in sustainable fashion for a long time now, and my recent collaboration with the Italian fashion designer - Ilaria Fendi is exciting for all those who believe the fashion industry should keep striving to go greener. Ilaria Fendi was one of the first sustainable brands, and their eco-friendly bags put them on the map. Their philosophy is a simple one - “Nothing is created, and nothing is destroyed, but all is transformed.” I’m currently working alongside the company on a range of drop dresses made in Africa. However, sustainability doesn’t just end there. Even something like working from home is a part of sustainability. Today, you can work from anywhere in the world with a laptop and an internet connection whilst reducing your carbon footprint. And in the current situation, remote working is undoubtedly the best way to stay safe and save the world. How do you describe yourself as a women empowerment activist? Simonetta Lein: Let’s be honest; women are often guilty of being one another’s fiercest critics. However, you should be all about embracing your sisters of all shapes and sizes and celebrating their differences.

FACE MAGAZINE FACE MAGAZINE

The world would be a very dreary place if we all marched to the beat of just one drum. It’s different strokes for different folks.

When any woman is bullied or made to feel inferior, trust me, I take it personally. Women must stand up for each other, help others find their voice, take a stand, and fight for their right to be true to themselves. On the other hand, the Wish Wall Foundation has launched several projects in Africa that address social issues such as literacy and employment. As an entrepreneur, I believe that true empowerment only comes from personal development and improvement, and I’m keen to help provide the tools women worldwide need to transform their lives. You launched ‘The Simonetta Lein Show’ on Bold TV, tell us more about it? ‘The Simonetta Lein Show’ on Bold TV is the place where my passion meets my profession. You will find everything from fashion, sustainability, and activism, to women empowerment on my show. It’s a pleasure to interview fashion moguls, activists, entrepreneurs, and discuss their journeys and perspectives. For instance, I’ve had the privilege of having Fern Mallis, the creator of New York Fashion Week, on my show. It was moving to hear from Fern how an accident changed the way Fashion Weeks were organized in the United States. The show has recognized me in the “power women” 2020 official list interviewing celebrities such as Kim Sledge, Robert Davi, Kevin Sorbo, Jay Shetty, Leon, Lamman Rucker and some many more. The reaction of my fans gave me the inspiration to continue also during quarantine. I am very thankful

De Bornarel is a young high fashion hats house that takes its roots in the life and history of Marguerite, founder of the brand. The designs feature mixed lines, born out of the intertwining of two universes with strong codes: cultural heritage and aesthetics. Since her earliest childhood days, Marguerite was brought up both in the fashion world, by her grandmother (a seamstress for the biggest houses), and in the equestrian one(Marguerite has been riding since she was old enough to get in the saddle). She naturally plays with the DNA of these familiar universes to create her own, one that is unique and personal. Before launching her own brand, Marguerite got her to start at Lanvin, before moving on to work as a stylist and project manager, all the while collecting equestrian medals, most notably as French Champion in Show Jumping. Elegant and sophisticated on the one hand, raw and straightforward on the other, it is with a natural consciousness that Marguerite mixes materials, shapes and textures without ever straying from the French tradition of hat making once the wool felt has been shaped into a hat in one of the world’s famous French workshops, Margueritehand makes her hats in her Parisian studio. Chains, the ancestral symbol of the link and relationship between sky and earth, are at the heart of the brand, as are the metal parts she uses, which are also meticulously crafted by jewelry workshops in Paris.

From childhood, I was blessed with a special talent, which was soon recognized by my teachers and peers. It was my good fortune that I belong to a creative and supportive family. When it was time to go to college, it was a given that I would choose Art. I excelled at Sir JJ School of Art, passing out as a Maharashtra State topper in Textile Design, and soon I moved to painting professionally, and became a well -known artist in a short span. After a few years, I felt the need to hone my skills further and I went to New York to study Drawing and Painting at Parsons School of Design. This was one of the milestones for me as I discovered myself here. Life in NY was similar to life in Mumbai but one had to fend for oneself completely, away from the sheltered life that I had so far led in Mumbai. This is when I actually began to feel empowered.

It was much later in life that I realized that I had inherited my father’s philanthropic ways and some of his organizing abilities. Yet another milestone. I always say that life began at 40! The combination of creativity and my love for my city Mumbai has since moulded me into what I am today. Having somewhat attained this goal of becoming a celebrated and well known artist, I felt the need to do something more‌. for the city and its people, for society, and for the art world. ... As Festival Director of Kala Ghoda Arts Festival, I had the opportunity to meet, work and understand women from various creative fields of Dance, Theatre, Music, Visual Arts, Literature, Architecture and Design.

Art has always been a passion for me. I was always been fond of drawing, painting, and other forms of creative expression from my school days. I did not start as an artist. Being trained in Badminton since my childhood, along with my father I cherished a love for the sport and even went so far as to win three nationallevel titles. Apace with Badminton, I pursued a degree in Economics, studied French, and took a course in Hotel Management. But it was much later I decided to pursue my passion for art and desired to be an artist, by undergoing formal training, a Master’s Degree in Art in the year 1988. This is where my journey as an artist began and eventually, my love for art overpowered my passion for sports. I feel as if I am a child of destiny and meant to be a painter today. I’ve been fortunate to exhibit my works in different Indian cities and across the world, with more than forty solos and over 100 group shows including as part of art fairs in New York, London, Singapore, Miami, Dubai, and Rotterdam. My paintings are in the collections of renowned Indian institutions, corporates, hotels, and aesthetes. I’ve been featured in numerous publications and have been extremely grateful to have over a dozen awards to my credit. Most recently, I was honored with the Amrita Shergill Rashtriya Kala Puraskar (2018) by the National Institute of Fine Arts (NIFA),

FACE MAGAZINE New Delhi, and the Exceptional Woman of Excellence in Art Award from the Women’s Economic Forum (WEF) at The Hague, Netherlands earlier the same year.

After having completed my Masters in Art and painting in 1988, I continued to hold exhibitions. In 1989 I got married and was in Mumbai, Kolkata, and Delhi as my husband was in a transferable job. Exposure to the major metro cities in India allowed me to get acquainted with art at the National level besides allowing me the freedom, time, and expression of undivided attention to my career. It was during these formative years that I was fortunate to be exposed to art and culture, museums and seminars which were a big draw in the major metros.

It also allowed and compelled me to experiment in a very individualistic fashion as I was away from the comfort of my familiar surroundings in Pune. Making new friends, meeting artists, and participating in art shows and creating my own space within the art fraternity made me more aware of myself and enabled me in making my own decisions. I have always been self-sufficient since the age of 25 and so my career in Art, fortunately, provided me the financial support needed for a successful vocation.

It was here that I had the complete freedom of expression in the true sense without the pressure of domestic life which was incomplete turmoil owing to an ailing husband and a growing child. These six to seven years were the most trying times that I have faced. Art was the only support for mental and financial stability. Sustenance was difficult, but the only choice left was fighting against the odds. In this whole process, I became stronger and at the same time more sensitive to life and existence. In recent times I love the works of Anjolie Ela Menon being my favorite artist whom I admire and respect. My work was appreciated by the legendary art collectors like Maharani Gayatri Devi of Jaipur and Jamshedji Bhabha of the TATA sons. From then on it was a journey I felt was decided for me . me not only monetary benefits but also respect and strength to deal with whatever came my way. It has truly given me great experiences‌ Living life entirely on my own, emotionally and financially...with keeping your reputation intact and having your ethics and middle-class values that we have all been brought up with and the strong sense of spiritual beliefs steered my way through all the obstacles to create a career in art where I had no mentor to guide and support or a family member who had any inclination in this field. DJ LEMON

What inspired you to become a DJ?

T

Interviewd By

DEEPTI CHANDAK FACE MAGAZINE

he stage has been my favorite place even as a child, be it an annual function or a get-together. Music has been in our family for generations, so I owe my professional achievements to my passion for the stage and the music in my blood. Another strong influence would be my father for making me listen to his playlist every morning, which inspired me to create music of my own.

DJ Lemon is an interesting name! How did you come up with it? “Lemon” is a blessing given by my father who always addressed me as “Leema” which in Sindhi means a lemon. He passed away in 2007 and I thought of taking this on as my stage name “DJ LEMON” which has proven to be very lucky and in this way, I carry a piece of him with me every day.

You’ve traveled all around the world from Nairobi to Singapore and Dubai for work. Which city has been your most memorable performance and why? Every city and country has showered me with love in their way, but one of my most memorable performances would have to be at “White Dubai”, where I performed at an exclusive Bollywood night as the main act. It was so empowering, I felt like the God of music, watching thousands of people raving on the dance floor.

How do you prepare before a performance? I take every event seriously and as a chance to prove myself. Being complacent is not a choice, so I usually do a rundown of the playlist which is relevant to that specific city. Every place has its unique essence of music and choice of songs. I aim to do justice to what they love and sometimes I improvise at the console.

FACE MAGAZINE

You play electronic music, commercial club Bollywood, and deep progressive house. Which is your favorite genre to spin to, and why?

Bollywood is my favorite genre because it has a vast variety of music within it, it doesn’t bound itself by any specific tempo of the song or style of the song. The Indian music industry is bursting with a variety of blends; which is a beautiful opportunity for any DJ to keep upping their game with the changing trends.

How was it working alongside some of the biggest entertainers in the music industry, like Yo Yo Honey Singh and RDB? I have never met an entertainer like Yo Yo Honey Singh. He is full of energy and creates a connection with the crowd from the moment he comes on the stage & RDB is no different. It’s ecstatic to be a part of such big concerts because I believe there is a lot to learn every day and these rock stars surely seem to be doing something right.

You also create your compositions. How did you foray into composing? It started from 2002 when I heard the song Yaaron – By KK and thought to myself “It’s a slow song” and one of my friends had mentioned something about a software which can do some magic; so I invited him home and learned the basics and thus began my story of remixing love songs as per my vision.

How would you describe the job of a DJ and their influence? I am blessed to be pursuing my passion as a profession, so I don’t see it as much as a job but having said that, I don’t take it for granted either. It has allowed me to travel the world, connect with people who appreciate my music, make friends, and learn so much more not only as DJ Lemon but as a human being. Every successful DJ has its platform filled with fans, followers, and supporters who become a part of their extended family. They look up to us and are greatly influenced and affected by JULY 2020

what we do. I try to use this opportunity to interact with them, they learn about my life and I learn something from them. My main focus is to share my love for life and music positively and responsibly.

How do you make use of technology? We are living in a Smart Age, every few months a newer technology emerges and I, am a gadget freak. Even in the music industry worldwide, the way one produces music has changed greatly, and to keep up with that, one must always be willing to unlearn old methods and I am an eager student. Change is the only constant, I believe that very strongly. I use technology for my work as a DJ and as a music producer, which is a highly digitized process in this day and age and one must keep up. Apart from that, I use technology as a means of communicating with all my loved ones and supporters.

Can you describe your state of mind during a DJ-set? The moment I am at the console, my focus is on creating a relationship between the music and the crowd. What makes them happy, what makes them dance; it’s about giving them what they want. I could come with a set in mind, but that could change depending on the response from my audience and I improvise as I go.

Do you think DJ-ing is an art? It is a creative field and we are called artists, so in that sense, yes it is an art. But in a way, it’s so much more. Becoming a DJ is more than just mastering the mixing of music, it’s knowing all the elements of music that come together, what accentuates the beauty of it, and what takes away from it. In this line of work, one needs to be in love with music above all, to master the art. FACE MAGAZINE

FACE MAGAZINE ockdown, Corona, Pandemic, and Covid-19 are the words we have been repeatedly hearing for the past few months. Despite being a rapidly spreading virus, this disease has also affected the non- infected in a lot of ways. Shaking us from our known and comfortable lifestyles, we were compulsorily made to sit at home, clean our homes, and also finally spend quality with our families. As we are spending more time indoors home cooks, people living alone, and amateurs are frequenting the kitchen and boy!! we are seeing some amazingly delicious treats. Our social media channels in specific have seen a major influx in food-related posts, stories, and recipes. These hard times have made knitters, painters, and stress-bakers out of all of us.

From some exceptional baking and decorating., easy home recipes to gastronomical cocktails, this quarantine has taught everyone their way around the kitchen. From homemade pasta and pancake cereal to pickled veggies and focaccia bread art, there’s something for everyone when it comes to these recipes that have been catapulted into popularity during the quarantine. One of the major reasons for this is also the closing of delivery services and restaurants wherein the dishes and foods we love and are used to eating are no more available to us and hence somehow we have tried to make them at home and honestly now we don’t know if we want to order them from outside anymore. Let’s look at a few trends that have come in from thin air and spread like wildfires. Although the question still stands as to how much are these trends and dishes going to stand the test of time and stay with us as favorites?

Dalgona coffee

Banana bread

Sourdough

This was our first patient in the pandemic food trend epidemic and it spread faster than the spread of coronavirus across the globe. This creamy whipped coffee, was the absolute talk of the town when it was introduced on one of the social media apps and due to its ease of cooking got adapted and was developed in many variations by different perspectives. Some people loved it and some hated its laborintensive processes, nonetheless, it went to become one of the most popular hashtags on the social media of all time. Dalgona coffee (now named for its resemblance to a nostalgic Korean honeycomb candy) was spreading among YouTubers, TikTokkers, and Instagrammers. In the second half of March, YouTube views of videos with “Dalgona” in the title increased 5,000%.

Searches for “banana bread” started to surge on Google the week of March 15—right after the federal government announced a state of emergency due to COVID-19, and the first week many people were staying at home fulltime due to widespread adoption of social distancing measures. Due to its easy recipe packed with flavor, it quickly caught on to the restless and sweet cravings of people and started becoming a staple in every house. You can make it as easy and as fancy as you like, but almost everyone had to make one. Stats from Pinterest searches, Instagram tags, and Youtube searches, only translate to ‘People really, really wanted Banana Bread”.

Surprisingly the world saw a surge in the making of this intermediatelevel bread, which is not an easy one to master. Still, we saw innumerable people trying and making it successfully. It could be stress or the time they had in hand, but we were completely enjoying these updates. Beautiful designs on the bread top and tempting videos of the rising bread spread itself across the internet and turned everyone into a baker. The starter itself is a difficult one to make, but hopefully, that was helping people focus their attention from the restlessness of being at home to giving them a purpose every 12 hours.

Focaccia garden trend

FACE MAGAZINE

Along with sourdough came a lot of focaccia bread. With time in hand, people started experimenting with making gardens out of the herbs and flowers on the dough. One of the cutest trends to rise, people quickly explored an insane amount of creativity and took a simple dough turned into a beautiful painting.

Ramen/Instant noodles This pandemic took a lot of us back to our college days and a lot of us a bunch of new recipes to make store-bought noodles. As soon as the pandemic was announced, we stocked up on instant noodles, but this time cooked them like Michelin star chefs. A big number of upgrades and toppings were seen being used on these two-minute dishes, where people were seen recreating their restaurant Ramen at home. Elevate your soup game by grabbing a regular ol’ pack of instant ramen noodles to craft an epic bowl that tastes even better than takeout.

Meal kits Restauranteurs quickly took advantage of this opportunity where they sending meal kits to people’s houses. Somehow receiving only their meals in parts made people feel safer, wherein the risks were the same. Nonetheless, this was also seen as a growing trend and a lot of home cooks started delivering and preparing these meal kits at home too. Instagram food trends under quarantine have run the gamut from labor-intensive to candycoated, but all of them speak to a collective restlessness. We’re all home, we’re all learning, and each of these meals reflects our hope that this one might be the one to stave off not just hunger, but boredom.

“To be Aware is to Empower; To be Aware is to be Empowered.” Article By

TANVI CHORDIA

“ental Health Awareness”- These words are as viral over the internet as the virus is across the globe. However, the question is- “Will this awareness has an impact as strong, or will it persist in our behavior for as long?” Just to confirm that we are on the same page of “Mental Health Awareness”, here’s what it means (Or should mean in current times). “Awareness” differs from “Information” and hence, just knowing what the topic is all about won’t serve the purpose of its existence. Awareness needs us, not only to know about it but also to ensure that when we implement it in our day-to-day lives, we are sensitive enough to communicate our awareness and send across the message that we genuinely care. If we are aware, we should be empowered to act sensitively, and take FACE MAGAZINE

FACE MAGAZINE responsibility for empowering those who are looking to seek help to cope with their mental health issues.

“To be Aware is to Empower; To be Aware is to be Empowered.” These tough times demand each one of us to be patient, tolerant and motivated despite all the curveballs that are being thrown at the world, that tempt us to act otherwise. So whether you’re someone who is dealing with mental health issues or someone who is a friend or an acquaintance to someone who is struggling with these issues, awareness is equally important on both sides. Here are a few tips, not from an expert in the profession, but from someone who has experienced being on both sides of the table to stay empowered towards mental health awareness!

If you are on the “Experiencers’ Side”`

When you are on the “Experiencers’ Side”, it means that you are someone who is dealing with anxiety or depression. The word “Victim” or “Sufferer” is not for someone like you who is strong enough to deal with the challenges of depression or anxiety. So pat yourself on the back for being patient and hopeful enough if you are still reading this!

Don’t take it “One Day” at a time.

We’re often told things like“Take it, slow buddy, you’ll be fine” or “Take it one day at a time”. But these feel useless for someone who can’t wait for a tough day to end. So let me ask you to take it “One MOMENT at a time”. Before jumping into what you have to do in the next 3 hours or worrying about how you’ll make it before tonight’s deadline, come back to yourself in “THIS” moment and recognize that you’re doing just fine right here, right now. EMPOWER yourself in THIS MOMENT so that in the next moment to come, you already have the grit to handle it better. This works. “One MOMENT at a time”

Bro Tip- When you revisit the past, revisit it only to see how far you have come. When you imagine the future, imagine and visualize yourself smiling happily, nothing too complicated. JULY 2020

Maintain an “Overthinking Journal”

NO OFFENCE to all the positive “Gratitude Journals” because every experiencer of depression and anxiety is asked to maintain one. However, an “Overthinking Journal” can help you deal with those times when finding the “silver lining” to complete your Gratitude Journal becomes a challenge in itself. During such scary (only in your mind) times, turn to your Overthinking Journal. Write and rant all that you are thinking during low times or anxiety attacks and shut the journal. When you feel calmer, open it again and then turn to a simple introspection of how you are better and bigger than all the false negative thoughts that try to get the best of you. And believe me, as you heal, this “Overthinking Journal” will become a book of jokes for you; after all, you’ll learn that all the things that bothered you were worth laughing at sooner or later, isn’t it?! Bro Tip- For a loss that’s irreparable (loss of a loved one/extreme financial losses), it’s impossible to laugh at it. During such times, allow yourself to address the loss, cry openly, and accept it gradually.

TALK to a friend YOURSELF

There’s nothing wrong with talking to friends/close relatives about your feelings of anxiety or depression it is highly advisable. But apart from that, talking to yourself like you are your friend is a real game-changer. After all, we are all good at giving mental-health advice. So this time, step out of your shoes and flaunt those of your closest friend who cares about you. Befriend yourself at this moment and talk to yourself how you would talk to someone who you love dearly and want to help out of this challenging state of mind. Bro Tip- Don’t misinterpret this and stay alone when you feel depressed or anxious. This piece of advice will help you be gentle on yourself, but never underestimate the power of seeking external help that’s from a friend/relative or mental health professional.

If you’re on the Listener’s side

Understand that you are in a role that goes beyond just being the friend or relative of someone who is an Experiencer. You have a responsibility on your side when it comes to being a Listener. This isn’t necessarily overwhelming; in fact, take it as a positive role that allows you the privilege of being there for someone in a world where kindness is rare. Here’s how you can be a helpful Listener (I’m sure that you’re a good one already if you’ve stuck around and made it to this section of the article!)

“Giving unwanted advice” doesn’t count as “Trying to help”

Your role says it all- LISTEN; because in most mental health challenges, the experiencers need someone to hear them out, rather than giving them advice. It’s warm and kind that you wish to step into their shoes and help, but when someone is not in the receptive mode to understand advice, even the best of it will fail at helping. You’ll add to their problems instead of making them any lesser. Bro Tip- Instead of giving advice, take action. For example, if you suggest them to exercise and feel better, be their workout buddy. If you think that pursuing a hobby can help them, be the ones who bring them the hobby essentials or joins them at the hobby class. If you think they need a therapist, assist them in finding one and make sure they attend all sessions. If you think they don’t need a therapist, it clearly shows that they don’t need unhelpful extra advice from a mental-health non-professional either! Nuff said!

Refuse Rebounds

Instant solutions in terms of dealing with mental health are often temporary. If they could “Snap out of it” they would! Without any intention of sounding discourteous, I would like to mention that if you plan on telling an Experiencer to snap out of it, you need to stay out of it. Don’t suggest hookups for a broken heart, alcohol for someone who feels like a failure or a puff for someone who thinks they’re not enough. This one is a personal request. Period. Bro Tip- Instead of creating their dating profile, handing over a beer bottle, or asking them to roll that joint to numb the pain, help them address it. Help them in addressing, understanding, and eventually accepting the pain so that they can grow from it at their pace. Heal, don’t conceal.

YOUR LOVED ONE IS NOT “EVERYONE”

We know that mental health challenges are faced by a huge chunk of the millennial population. However, never; I repeat, never tell an Experiencer that it happens to “EVERYONE”. There is a thin line, yet a huge difference between affirming that “You are not alone” and mentioning that “It happens to everyone”. Choose your words wisely. They need to know that they’re not alone, but they also need to be made to feel that nobody is belittling their problem. Bro Tip - When they are sharing their issues, don’t relate them to yours instantly to provide solutions. Allow their issues some exclusivity, hear them out patiently, and then affirm that you are here to help; and it goes without saying that please live up to the said affirmation! A human brain is a complex machine in itself and dismantling and decoding every aspect of mental health is almost close to impossible for someone like me who isn’t a professional. However, we hope these basics from someone who has been on both sides of this multi-cuisine mental-health table effectively serve you. Whether you’re an Experiencer or a Listener, add to your core values the magical ingredient of kindness, blend in some patience, sprinkle a little smile, and wait for the sunshine to do its magic. Until then, one moment, one day, one smile, and some laughter at a time! Hang in there, hope to come soon… Stay Empowered!
