Dear Readers, We are in testing times and lives have changed permenantly. Our accessories have been taken over by masks, gloves and glass shields. We have to adjust to what I call the New Normal. From stepping outside the house until coming back we have to be watchful, guarded and mindful in every breath. The roads deserted for the last 2 months are back in action. The shuttered shops have opened and world is springing back to action albeit different to what we experienced earlier. The virus is still there lurking in shadows so please take good care of yourselves. Do not venture in crowded place. I am aware it sounds amusing as our densely populated cities hardly give us spaces to breathe. But remember the media still shows the no of cases spiraling like a scoreboard of a one sided match.

And provide its readers with compelling content, new trends, innovative ideas, inspiration and the new dimension of the media world. From emerging flavors and ingredient to new ideas buzzing in the industry, it promises to collect what’s hot and trending in the industry and deliver it in a format that keeps you informed and interested. The current world situation has a lot of us down and filled with anxiety, well, in fact, I believe this is the perfect time to make changes and make that shift towards our personal, economic, political, and especially environmental situations. This month we have focussed on topics from such varied scenarios and knitted them in context to Fashion, Art, Culture, and Entertainment. We have brought to you celebrities, trainers, environmentalists, eco-friendly fashion brands and also shed light on sustainability in what we eat and wear. I’m proud of having the courage to make a move to India from London at the age of 21 and have the confidence that to make a mark in the Indian Entertainment industry. Hosting the IPL and the World Cup was one of the highlights in my career. Being called kind in Big Boss was a big moment too, where I have been appreciated for my kindness and not only my talents. What do you regret most in life?

Not telling my dad I love you enough. I wish I had the time to tell him this a hundred more times. But I am sure he knows it.
What’s the best compliment you’ve received and you remember to date? I think I’m beautiful inside and out and the best daughter And I’m a woman to marry These were nice That I am beautiful on the inside. My father said I was the best daughter and for me, that is the biggest compliment I could’ve ever received. He said I was a woman a guy could take home and marry. I always love remembering those words.
What do you never tire of shopping for? I’m not a shopaholic in terms of clothes! As I’m always on stage and working so I get to wear lots of amazing clothes And shoes! Shoes are my weakness, I can’t stop myself with a pair of shoes I like. I have to have them. I love decorating my home and buying home decor products. I spend hours surfing for the best items for my house such as curtains, coffee tables, art, etc.

What is your health and fitness regime? Well, I start my morning with warm water and lemon and black coffee after that. I take a vitamin D, C capsule, and apple cider Vinegar for my gut health. I workout after that in the gym usually for a spin or body pump class. I tend to do intermittent fasting so I try not to eat till midday.
Who is your inspiration? My inspiration would be a strong woman and there are so many to look up to. I love Oprah and I love self-made women who make it in this world. Who’ve broken the rules and had the confidence to do so. I aspire to inspire more women through my journey, where at least one girl can follow her dreams after looking at me.
What has been your greatest extravagance? My car, Mercedes A-class, I love it, and driving it around gives me joy and peace at the same time. FACE MAGAZINE

Your favorite travel experiences. I love Barcelona and Miami. I feel these places ave such a homely vibe to them. I keep wanting to go back for more now and then. I also love India so many places to see and explore. Each part of India has a different culture and landscape to offer and hence I can never get enough of it. I am hoping I can visit a few places on my checklist once the lockdown is officially over and the world is a safer place.
Upcoming projects Well, it’s IPL for an online website and a new web series.
Who is your favorite cricketer? Fav cricketer Sachin and Virat, because along with talent they come with a lot of integrity, wherein they inspire the world of cricket and humanity as well. I feel they are a proof of true sportsmanship.
How is your experience of the IPL Tournament? The best experience, to be honest, was live hosting in a stadium with over 50.000 people in the audience. It was an exhilarating experience and it makes me very even thinking about it. JUNE 2020

When and how did you develop your passion for cooking and baking in specific? Please tell us about your journey.
I
’ve been fascinated by baking for as long as I can remember. One of my earliest memories is baking brownies for the first time with my aunt. However, I thought I wanted to be a lawyer and joined Law School. That lasted for exactly 2 weeks. I realized that law wasn’t for me and moved to Switzerland to study hospitality management at Cesar Ritz College. I then decided to study pastry and Le Cordon Bleu, France. I was in culinary school in Paris when I tried my first macaron and it was love at first bite. I knew then that I would move back to India and try to make them. Le 15 took off in 2010. It has been a long journey – one of the most satisfying ones so far, and there’s a lot to look forward to in the future. At the time, there were not any stand-alone pastry shops in India, except maybe with the exception of one or two. I wanted to bring that culture to India and set up Le 15, which had been my dream.
How did Le15 start? Is there the story behind the name of the bakery? After I moved back to India, I was clear on one thing, I wanted to recreate a piece of my life in Paris. To make wonderful desserts, using the best ingredients I could find and serve happiness in a box. And that is how Le 15 (named for the 15th arrondissement in Paris, the neighborhood where I lived) was born. I tried my first macaron in Paris and knew instantly that this would be the piece of Paris I would bring back to India with me.
We have heard a lot of buzz about Le15’s mission macaroons and unique desserts? Do you think the Indian consumer market is ready for complicated French desserts? Do you plan to bring desserts from other parts of the world for us too? Le15 Patisserie completed ten years in March, so we’ve been making macarons in India for ten years. The Indian consumer has really appreciated it and the demand has only grown over the years. The Indian consumer is definitely ready for french desserts and more complex flavors. We are a french inspired patisserie and we will continue to bring french inspired desserts to India. JUNE 2020

Can you tell us about the Le15 training institute and how can an amateur baker benefit from it? At Le15, we do some cooking and baking classes. We usually do them at our Central Kitchen in Parel. But recently, we’ve started doing them online on Zoom. An amateur baker can join any of our classes and learn how to better their baking skills.
Are there new stores and projects in the pipeline for Le15? What does the future hold for the baking industry given the pandemic situation? We are taking it each day at a time and really working on the future of Le15. The baking industry is one that will always survive and thrive because people always need joy in their lives. We can’t wait to get back to our central kitchen and continue to spread joy and happiness with our product.
What are your plans for re-opening Le15 studio and café? How much are you relying on social media for sustainability in the business right now? Have you started deliveries of products? Unfortunately, we haven’t started deliveries yet. We are waiting for the lockdown to lift and then we will reopen the patisserie. FACE MAGAZINE

Do you plan to experiment with Indian sweets as well? What are your views on fusion desserts? We are a ten-year-old brand and we have been doing Indian flavors with french techniques ever since we started. This could be a chai macaron or a green chili macaron. We have a saffron cupcake, a coconut macaron which was inspired by barfi.
With growing health consciousness, how do you plan to approach and fulfill the requirement for such clientele? Do you have Vegan and gluten-free dessert options as well? While all our macarons are gluten-free, we always get requests from customers for specific dietary requirements - glutenfree, no refined sugar, vegan, and keto to name a few for most of the desserts. To fulfill this and cater to a growing “healthconscious� audience we have introduced a healthy range of desserts called Le15 Lite. This line of desserts has a combination of healthy cakes, keto and gluten-free cookies, keto mousse, and even a vegan dark chocolate macaron.
What would you tell an amateur baker who also dreams of making it big in this overcrowded market? There are no shortcuts to achieving anything. Be patient, put in the work, and take the leap.
With Covid-19 as our new normal, how do you plan to cope up and what would be the new normal for you. The new normal is changing on a day to day basis and we are just waiting to see what the new normal will be when we actually do start our business again. There will be a lot of adaptations that we will have to make whether it is in terms of hygiene and safety of not only our employees but also our customers. We plan to implement all the recommended guidelines which will now become a part of the new normal.

Career accomplishment you are most proud of?
I
am most proud of yeh meri Life hai. It gave me fame and a name. I am very proud of Maaya. I wanted to work with Vikram Bhatt. It gave me a headstart on the OTT. I don’t consider my career separate from my life. Going through depression and bipolar and coming out of it a winner and to be able to share that story with people is one huge achievement of my life and career. I believe I have saved at least a few lives by doing that. Your work and accomplishments give you a lot of joy but this is one kind of achievement that gives me a different kind of high altogether and puts me in a very joyous state. I was able to help humankind in some way or the other. I am also very proud of another show called seven. It was produced by Yashraj. It was a show way ahead of its time. It did not do great numbers but I am very proud of the fact that I was a part of such a phenomenal show. Proud in the most humble and grateful manner.
What do you regret the most in life? Nothing. I actually don’t regret anything. I know that everything happened for a reason. Today whatever I am is because of what has happened. Me regretting things would be like not accepting it fully. I don’t regret anything in life.

How was the last decade? What would you remember it most for? My last decade has been very eventful. Loads of ups and downs have occurred. I lost myself completely, tried to commit suicide, had bipolar, had depression. I gained my life and had a fresh start. It was a 180-degree change in me. I literally feel like a new person. I don’t even connect or remember much about the old me. I had this amazing career which I left in between to figure out what life was all about. That requires a lot of courage. The last decade has been teaching me a lot about courage, fearlessness, experimental learning, truth, and learning more about my truth. I restarted my career and reached where I am today. I am so grateful for that. Most importantly, I found the true me, and then I found the love of my life, James. These are the most phenomenal things that have happened to me in the last decade. It was a beautiful decade for me. I will be forever grateful for that. It’s unfortunate that we really have to go really deep in darkness to be thrown into the brightest light you have ever imagined. That’s how the universe functions. It’s like the pull of a rubber. The more you pull, the harder it will hit you. Life is also like that. I am extremely grateful for the last decade.

What’s the best compliment you’ve received and you remember to date? I received a lot of compliments every day. I am very grateful. Sometimes I feel I don’t even deserve those compliments. I feel people are too kind and nice. I also learned how to accept, in the last decade. I was very bad at it earlier. I did not know how to receive or accept things or let go of things from my life. These are the lessons life taught me in the last decade that I am forever grateful for. All these compliments that I get. I don’t remember one best compliment. Although I do like it when people call me a good person or a very versatile. That matters to me. To be able to help, to be kind is important. And to be appreciated for your passion and the recognition and compliments for that really boost my morale. It gives me a lot of courage to continue the same.
Who is your inspiration? I am a very observant person. I observe people, I observe nature, life is so inspiring. All of us together is so inspiring. I get inspired by my parents, grandparents, friends, people who made it big, or who didn’t make it. The desire to live, fight, and survive every day is so inspiring. Life inspires me in totality.

Upcoming projects you are working on.
I was supposed to start shooting for three projects but unfortunately, due to this pandemic, everything was brought to a halt. Now I am getting a lot of calls for new projects. Those that I had signed, I have no idea when will they start. Everything is stopped now and people don’t know when things will go fullfledged. People are not only going through the economic crisis but mental crisis too. We are shaken so much and we don’t know which way to go. I am lucky and blessed that I am getting offers. As soon as the pandemic and lockdown get over, I think I will be in a much better position to accept a project. Right now everything is just in the air. But I’m looking forward to starting work as soon as possible.
Is Marriage on the cards for you soon? Yes, I was supposed to get married this year. We had planned for September and we had started to work on the planning of the marriage. Then this pandemic happened and we honestly have no idea when we get married now. There’s so much happening. This time has taught us a lot and the time that is about to come seems gloomy to me even though I want to be extremely positive. But if I look at it practically, there is a big economic crisis ahead of us. We don’t know how bad it has hit us. Once we start working again we will get to learn more about that. The only thing I am worried about right now is my health and the health and happiness of my loved ones. I want to help as many people to survive. Right now it’s a game of survival and I don’t see it any other way at this moment. This shall pass too. I am positive and I am looking forward to hearing some positive news in the future.

How important is mental health for you and how are you dealing with Quarantine? Mental health is extremely important. The more I learn about it like time, space, vibrations, spirits, etc the more I get intrigued. It’s just phenomenal to know about these things. Whatever I have today is because of my
manifestations. I prayed for them. I literally saw it in my manifestations. It all happens in the mind. If we feed our mind with negativity and let the negativity stay there for a long time, our mind can create a lot of negative things not just for us but for the people around us. Every action has a reaction and each action can cause multiple reactions in the universe. Its the butterfly effect. It’s scientifically proven. Hence mental health is so important. All my actions are to keep my mind happy. For years, I kept mental health aside. We never knew that it is even important. It was never an open conversation before. It’s now that people are talking about it.

Thanks to a few of us who spoke about our challenges and conditions who discussed our struggles in public openly without feeling any shame about depression, bipolar, etc. Deepika spoke, I spoke, Honey Singh and a few others came out in the open about it. That changed a lot of things around here. An open conversation is so so important and much easier than going through all the pain and stress and anxiety in silence. Thank god that people are talking about it now. We have to learn to keep our minds in a positive vibration. People don’t realize or even know about the power of the mind. It is extremely important to
meditate and to connect with their own soul. This quarantine time is the best for meditation. There is very little almost no outside disturbance now and so let’s use this time to connect with our soul. We need to learn who we really are. The outside work is not there to trouble you right now so use this opportunity to benefit yourself. We all can change the world by finding our true selves. The world will change automatically because each individual will change after that. You will not be a hypocrite anymore. You would have a lot of courage, be fearless, and be honest to yourself. And once you are these things you will
FACE MAGAZINE not have mental health issues. All these things are there because we have these fake ideas about life. If we stop living these lies, we will love ourselves more. We would be more real. I am thoroughly enjoying this quarantine time. There are low days but that’s a regular case with me even without the lockdown. The only thing I am missing is meeting my family and friends and give my love to them. I meditate once in the morning and once in the night. These vibrations give me a lot of joy. They keep me in a joyful state. These vibrations help me to get into productivity mode rather than negativity.

How did your journey start as a motivational speaker and an author?
I
t started when my friends were asking me how I got into property. They would take me for coffee and briefly interrogate me, so I spent all time going for coffee. I would just start documenting all the questions and the answers eventually started circulating across people. Eventually, a lot of people were asking me questions and I started having brief meetings in my office. There were like 10 people; and then it grew to twenty people, to hundred then to five hundred and made its way to a thousand people, leading up to an audience of 5000 that bought tickets to watch me speak. So that’s how I did that!

During/Post, this pandemic what according to you would be the new normal for us all? Well, I think if we talk about people who used to love going for events, are going to be wearier and they are going to be more careful given the social distancing situation and the new normal is going to be doing more things online; so you see a lot of people doing Zoom meetings, Facebook Lives, Instagram Lives, and there’s going to be a lot of online interaction, with which I think the whole e-Learning industry, is going to be a business hub like never before.
What’s your message to someone who has a dream, has failed numerous times, and is feeling beaten down? A message for them is to – “Never Give Up. Fight for your dream, find a PURPOSE, find your MISSION, and don’t do things because you want to get paid for it. Do things because it makes you happy and then figure out a way to monetize it.”

What the value of mentorship in your opinion? How does one attract a mentor? Is one mentor sufficient? I think mentorship is hugely important. Having a mentor will help you soak the learning process and the learning curve. I think it’s so important to have a mentor, and having as many mentors as you can. Just like Bruce Lee’s “Jeet Kune Do” methodology. He learns all the fighting styles and then creates his own. That’s what made him a great martial artist. So you must get a mentor in every aspect of your life in order to accelerate and get results faster.
How did u become a millionaire at such an early age? Can you share your ideas on how one could start? I spent; I “INVESTED” 10,000 pounds. I sold my car and spent 10,000 pounds for a mentor. His name was (Not sure how to spell it-YING TON). I paid him 10,000 pounds for two days for mentoring me and I learned strategies that allowed me to buy numerous properties- above 35 houses in 6 months. And then I continued investing and made money from these properties, and then I started investing more. But it mainly started because I made that investment in myself first.
Please tell us about your book “Business Hack”. So the book “Business Hack” was designed to help people soak the process of business. You know, I’ve been in business for over a decade now so I know what works and what doesn’t. I learned quite a bit from my experiences of what is good for business and what is not. The whole point of “Business Hack” is really to teach people how to take their business from an offline medium to an online business and to monetize and scale globally.

Your advice for aspiring entrepreneurs? My advice to young entrepreneurs is that, don’t focus on the money, focus on the value. I mean, money is really important to help you sustain, but people don’t buy the what but the why behind the product. It’s really important to have entrepreneurs who believe in what they do to add value to the marketplace, and in return, the money will come!
How can one keep their jobs relevant in these tough times? There’s only one way to do it. You must attach your skillset to the bottom-line of the business; meaning- if what you do is not bringing money for the company, then, you’re probably going to lose your job. And because companies need money to survive, they need sales to survive, so you must enhance and focus your skillset on the selling of the business rather than investing in things that might not bring you that much money. How do you want to be remembered after your work on Earth is done? I want happiness, I want financial freedom, and I want time freedom and location freedom to be the norm. Instead of people saying- “Oh I’ve gotta go to school, get a job and learn…” I want the norm to be-“You know what, I’m going to start my own business, and start my passion-based business…!” I want people to be able to monetize what they know, their skills, expertise, and to have their motto and give the message to the world to make a big impact.
Any new projects that you are working on? Yes! I’ve created a platform called “membby.co/john” It helps people become digital entrepreneurs. A digital entrepreneur is someone who takes their knowledge, skill, and expertise and creates online courses and online training to sell online and to monetize the knowledge that’s always in their head by reaching the world they wouldn’t be able to by only being offline.

How did Suta start and how have you entered a market with a western influence with Sarees? When we initially started off, we had designed a few clothes and had posted them on Facebook but instead of getting requests for a shoot, we were asked about the products. We found that our affinity for simple, minimalistic, nostalgic sarees that reminded us of a bygone decade, which were very rare to find in the market, was loved by people. What followed next was a quick pivot where we went on a hunt for the right fabric and skilled weavers across the nooks and crannies of rural India. Suta has made saree regular wear. We have made unstarched mulmul saree the most versatile wear for women of all age groups, be it, at work, home, parties, movies, colleges, or boardrooms. We have created a one-stop-shop for a saree lover with different offerings from unassuming underskirts, well fitted smart blouses, to washed and hand-stitched falledging. Sarees should no more be occasional wear and India’s impeccable craftsmanship has made it accessible to all and at a price that isn’t too heavy on the pocket. In this pursuit, sustainability is deeply integrated with each and every process we follow. We work closely with weavers and their families. We try as much to include as many weavers and craftsmen as
possible. We train people and try to improve their skill set thus increasing inclusion in our Suta family. 60% of our workforce comprises of women. What’s sets us apart is pure love with which each product is made. Also, our lovely Suta Saree can be worn by even a 20-year-old to an 80-year-old.
What is an overall story in terms of sustainability by choosing handwoven fabrics over-embellished fabrics? We have made unstarched mulmul saree the most versatile wear for women that can be styled to fit exactly who they are. We believed that sarees can be a staple in every wardrobe instead of something worn for occasions because we ourselves loved to wear sarees. But, the kind of sarees available in the market was not really what we wanted and we thought that simple, plain, comfortable, and soft sarees are really beautiful. Our journey started somewhere with noticing this gap in the market along with our passion for this kind of attire and entrepreneurship coming together.

How would you experiment with your textile moving forward? With a family of more than 1400 weavers and craftsmen along with associations with 8 states, we have plans to reach farther corners of India and learn about exquisite art forms and incorporate them into our products. Soon, we will be having our own line of ethnic wear, accessories, and footwear

Do you plan to recycle and reuse fabric LEFTOVERS? While we speak of sustainable fashion and up-cycling in the present day and age, weavers have been carrying on the tradition of upcycling for many decades. The beautiful fabric of ‘khesh’ is an example of old-world charm remaining as ravishing as ever in any form. The process of khesh weaving is pretty simple. On the handloom, new yarn forms the warp and torn strips of old sarees form the weft. However, the stunning amalgamations that this simple process can produce are truly extraordinary. What started in the early 1920s at Shilpa Sadan that was set up by Rabindranath Tagore near Shantiniketan as a
vocational training center is now a design that symbolizes the beauty in the simplicity of the Indian way of living. The traditional weavers in Birbhum pass on their craft to
consequent generations and keep the spirit alive.

The old sarees that are torn into strips are got either from different collections centers or from the excess of sarees that the weavers have that haven’t been sold. Once the old sarees are collected, shredding them into thin strips by hand is a process that is almost as difficult as the weaving. Cotton sarees are preferred because they are easier to tear when compared to synthetic ones. The weavers have developed short-cuts to make the tearing process easier. They first tear the sarees into 6 or 7 broad strips. Then, cuts of the desired breadth
are made at the edge of each strip. Following this, they hold the alternate edges on one hand and the rest on the other hand and pull in opposite directions. Once torn, these strips are weaved as khesh fabric. The outcome of the final fabric can never be predicted beforehand. The handloom cotton is a type of fabric that is woven using hand-operated looms. Two sets of interlacing yarns, the warp (length) and weft (width), are woven on a mechanized loom operated by weavers. These looms do not use electricity. Human handling lends the fabrics a unique feel and renders the fabrics more value. The resultant fabric is softer, more durable, and much more comfortable than machinemade fabrics. Handloom cotton is more breathable and thus feels lighter in summers and provides more insulation in winters. The dyeing process also becomes easier for handloom cotton as the color penetration is substantially more. Hues are absorbed better thus look resplendent on handloom cotton. The art of hand-weaving is labor-intensive and takes a longer time. But the beauty it adds to the fabric is priceless. Choosing handloom cotton supports the rich weaving heritage of India and lets the weavers carry on the precious art-form to the future generations as well.

A Lacoste icon since 1927, the piqué polo is reimagined with a modern hand in squared proportions and magnified details of leather and knit. Joining an Art Deco typeset logo and the all-over ‘L’ monogram, Robert George’s 1926 crocodile is writ large on chest pockets and washed canvas beach bags, or discreet as hardware on slip-on loafers. Tradition and innovation are aligned throughout, elevating the leisurely pursuits of the everyday. For Spring Summer 2020, Lacoste has collaborated with two British female designers.

We heard that you were pregnant when you shot for the song? What kind of care did u have to take for the same?
I
was five months pregnant when we shot the music video. When I heard that we would shoot in Armenia, I was very excited but I was also a little nervous. Honestly, the shoot went really well. I didn’t worry much because we were very happy about shooting in such a nice location. Since Gautam was with me, I knew he would take extra care. He met the doctor several times and took a list of medicines that we might need while we’re there. Even the crew was very caring, so I didn’t have to worry at all.
Did the crew set up anything special? The crew was very sweet and caring. The director and DOP would come to me and say if there’s any shot that I wasn’t comfortable with, I didn’t have to do it. Though we were shooting at different locations, the arrangements were really good. They kept serving me coffee and hot beverages. There was a shot at 7 am and I had to walk through the water, so they would keep the towels and hot pads, etc. ready.

How is motherhood treating you? You have lost already a lot of weight tips for the same, please. Motherhood is overwhelming in a lot of ways. From right when you find out that you are pregnant with delivering the baby, it’s truly special. It cannot be put in words. The bond that a mother shares with her child can only be understood by her. I remember my mom always telling me, ‘Jab tumhare bacche honge you will understand.’ That’s so true; now I know exactly what she meant. Having a baby changes your life completely, in a good way. A lot of people have been talking about my weight loss. It’s really not about losing weight; it’s about having a good lifestyle. It’s about how well you treated your body before getting pregnant and during the pregnancy. I have not lost a lot of weight after my pregnancy; the truth is I did not gain too much weight during that period. I always tell people that when you are pregnant, eat healthy as that’s good for you as well as your baby. It’s important to be active, by that I don’t mean hitting the gym for a rigorous workout. The focus shouldn’t be on looking a certain way. Being healthy benefits in the long run. FACE MAGAZINE

Favorite moment or BTS while shooting for the song? The locations were so pretty that every time we went to a new place, we would feel that what we shoot there should only be best. The place, Armenia, is not very famous, but when we went there, we were mesmerized by its beauty. There’s a shot where I had to sit on a swing which was in a lake. While I had to be on the swing, Gautam had to stand in the water and it was -5 degree. So that’s one memory that I have and I’ll always remember. The pillow fight sequence was also shot at a beautiful location and the scene is very close to my heart. They wanted all the candid shots, so we had fun.
How are you and Gautam dealing with parenthood? We have often seen many cute videos on your Instagram account with the baby. We are really enjoying ourselves, especially because it’s lockdown and nobody can get out of the house. So everybody is having a great time with the baby. Everyone has got a new toy to play with, especially Gautam because he is getting to spend a lot of time with Anaika (their daughter), and every day he can see these little changes. Now she has started responding to sounds and has started recognizing us. He would have missed out on these little things if it wasn’t for the lockdown. We keep doing a lot of masti and keep making videos of each other. Some moments are so sweet, especially when Gautam makes her sleep on him. I love watching that. JUNE 2020 101
You delivered very recently didn’t it scare you looking at the situation? What kind of precaution did you undertake? What’s your message to those moms who are scared of delivering their child during these tough times? Anaika was born on April 15, while this whole lockdown situation was going on. Initially, when the lockdown didn’t happen and I started hearing about Coronavirus, I was panicking a bit. I surfed the Internet to gather information, but not much was spoken about how it was affecting pregnant women and how it could affect infants.
Personally, what did you like the most about the song? Did you relate to it? My reply will be a little biased. I love watching Gautam and I romancing in the song. Seeing each other together on screen was a treat. The last time we were seen together was 4-5 years ago in Aashiqui Tumse Hi. After that, we haven’t shared screen space. I’ve watched the video over 100 times (laughs). We have received good reviews for our chemistry. Rahul Jain has sung it amazingly and Vandana Khandelwal has penned it beautifully. The whole team of Just Music is known for creating great music and I think it’s a great team that makes a song a hit. I’m glad everything worked for us.

So that situation was a little panicky for me because I have a habit of doing research and when there wasn’t enough information available, I was a little worried. When everything was shutting down and the lockdown was announced, I was a little relieved because I thought that the situation would get better and things would be under control. I suggest to all the pregnant women and who is going to deliver soon is that they should keep away from negativity. While it’s good to know what’s going on around the world, don’t let negative thoughts affect you. Try to be positive, do the things that you enjoy, spend time with your partner, and do all the fun things.
What was the brief that was given to two to with regards to Wajah shoot? How was the experience of shooting the music video? We met up with the team two-three times before going for the shoot. The team was very chilled out and they were really sweet. They told us that the kind of candid moments that we can create as a couple is what they liked the most. The song is very emotional and there’s a heartbreak feel to it. But the guy is remembering all the happy moments they had. We were expected to create a lot of romantic and fun scenes. Even during the shoot, they kept the camera rolling and asked us to do our thing. They wanted to showcase the comfort level that Gautam and I share.

When did you shoot for this song ? Can you share how was your experience of shooting for the same ?
W
e were approached for Wajah by Jjust Music around the same time last year after they saw a lot of our romantic videoes that we put up on social media. They wanted the same chemistry in the music video. Wajah has been a special song. When we were offered to be part of it, the rains had started so we could not shoot and as soon as the monsoon ended, we went to this amazing place called Armenia to shoot the video. Though Smriti was five months pregnant we still went there and managed to shoot the song.
What special precautions did you take for Smriti during the shoot since she was pregnant ? We shot the whole song in a one-day, morning to night schedule. We had to be careful. For instance, there was a pillow fight scene between us, and I was the only one getting beaten, as I couldn’t hit her and had to be very careful. There’s also a swing scene, where I’m swinging her and we are in the water. The shoot started at 6 am and the temperatures in Armenia would range from -5 to -7 degrees. So I would walk towards the swing in cold water, carrying her and put her in the swing, and get her back in the same way. Since the lake had stones and the water was really cold, I would carry Smriti.

How is fatherhood treating you ? I’ve always been told that the best thing about fatherhood is that it’s the purest form of love. Whenever my baby is with me, I smile ear-to-ear, which I cannot resist. I love the feeling. This lockdown has been like a blessing in disguise for me, because I get to be with my FACE MAGAZINE

daughter all the time and see her grow. I’ve seen so many changes in her in the last six weeks and I’ve learnt so much about babies. I would have missed out on this time, if I wasn’t homebound. I don’t think I would have been so hands on with my baby, like changing diapers, bathing her or changing her clothes, if I wasn’t subjected to the lockdown.

What do you like the most about Wajah? It’s a superb song. It sounds beautiful. Rahul Jain has sung and composed it wonderfully. The lyrics are great. We loved the video, too. It looks dreamy. That’s the USP of the team of Jjust Music — all their songs are really beautiful and unique.
Did you relate to the song? I relate to the song and I feel everyone would relate to it. It’s a simple, hummable number. I’m sure when we all were younger, we would look for a reason or ‘wajah’ for someone to fall in love with us. I wish this song was around when I was younger, trying to woo somebody.
The camera just kept rolling during the shoot of Wajah Heard you had to take several retakes during the shoot as you guys were shooting in minus temp? Pls elaborate.

What was the idea behind this song “Wajah “. We got to know you had written the song initially and music was added at a later stage ?
W
e all have one person in our life who gives us a reason to live and smile - that can be your girlfriend, boyfriend, wife, mother, daughter or anyone. The idea behind this song came from there. Yes, the lyrics of the song were penned first by Vandana Khandelwal. When I read the lyrics, I got touched. I wanted to create a really good song for it. So I created a simple and hummable melody so that whoever listens to it can connect to it and sing along.
As a singer do u feel Was there any difference when it came to release the song during the lockdown vs release of the song before lockdown ? If the song didn’t release during lockdown, it would have had proper promotions. I really miss my live concerts and travel. Whenever I had a new release in the past, we would have tours to five-six cities to promote it. Unfortunately, that’s not the case now because of lockdown. I’m missing that. I miss going out talking about the song and giving interviews. Everything else is the same. On the other hand, a good thing about the song’s release during the lockdown is that a lot of people are homebound and are waiting to consume good content.
What was your inspiration behind the song ? How did this idea come to your mind. Elaborate please The thought, Wajah, inspired me in creating this song. Wajah means reason, so the reason to live, the reason to smile and the basic thought behind the lyrics encouraged me to come up with a unique melody. I tried to give the song my kind of style and production. This was the basic idea. I’m glad it got shot really well and featured a pair who are a real-life married couple (B-Town couple Gautam Gupta-Smriti Khanna). I’m happy with the final product. JUNE 2020 109
Your upcoming projects There are a lot of singles that I’m planning to release soon. Some of them are with Jjust music. Also, a lot of my film projects were supposed to release this year, including Satish Kaushik’s directorial project, Kaagaz, which is a Salman Khan production. I’ve composed the entire soundtrack and also done playback for it. There’s another film called Saroj Ka Rishta, starring Sana Kapoor (Shahid Kapoor’s sister), in which I’ve composed four songs. There are four more films, which I can’t talk about right now. There are also a few web projects that will release on Zee5, Amazon Prime and Alt Balaji. I’m really excited about my singles because it’s a great time for independent music.

Who or what inspired you to become a singer? Tell us about your journey.
FACE MAGAZINE
I get inspired by good things/ people all around me. The journey started while growing up. I was lucky to belong to a home which enjoyed good music. My brother and mom used to sing. I think the surrounding really inspires us. I would sing and my family discovered that there’s a singer in me. That’s how it all started. I was five when I did my first stage show. Since then, there was no looking back. As soon as I came to Mumbai, on the third day I recorded my first film song for the film Fever, starring Rajeev Khandelwal and Gauahar Khan. I started doing a lot of TV shows, which were really appreciated and my voice became really popular. I also started recreating old melodies and releasing my work on YouTube which helped me reach a wider audience and travel the world.
What’s your dream? Where is this path heading for you ? My dream is to make my voice reach every single person in the world. I want people to connect to my music so that I can connect with more hearts. I feel I’m on the right path, working really hard on music.

Who or what inspired you to become a singer/actor? Tell us about your journey.
I
was exposed to a lot of films of varied genres and languages since childhood, from watching movies made by filmmakers like Mani Ratnam to RGV to Bharatan, from Spielberg to Disney to Tarantino, I listened to Madonna, Michael Jackson, and a lot of classical music as well. I grew up watching actors like Mohanlal Mammooty, studied Kamal Hasan, and took inspiration from our Bollywood khans straight to learning techniques from Leonardo Di Caprio. I think subconsciously, all I experienced in terms of storytelling and performing had an impact on me. Now come to think of it, my first audiences were the guests who came to our house and my stage was our living room. When the time came I realized that I needed to step out of my living room onto a bigger stage. This is what I wanted to do and this is what I had to do no matter what the consequences.
What is your dream? Where is this path heading for you? I dreamt of being an actor /performer, but it still feels funny to say that I am one. Since the craft is such you can never be sure enough to say “I am an actor”. I think everybody around me says it so I feel like I am one. But my dream is to not have any restrictions on my dreams and to push myself as a performer to my maximum potential and to reach as many people as I can. I want to spread as much good as I can and I am not only talking donations, in my day to day life as well, I always wonder where is this path heading? But I am ready to wait and watch, where this journey will take me, the unknown stories hold their mysteries.
What do you value the most about your partner? I value her dreams and aspirations and I know they are no less important than mine. Other than that its very difficult to pinpoint one. The thing about her is that you have to meet her to know where I am coming from. I value our life together more than anything because I know that without her, it wouldn’t be what it is today.

Career accomplishment you are most proud of? Peddlers going to Canne film festival and me Getting to play Aladdin in the Disney India musical for sure, but on the whole, I am proud of myself for having have worked across mediums, genres, and extremely talented actors. I have learned so much from experimental theatre to large scale musicals, from independent cinema to regional cinema. TV and a bit of radio as well each segment had its challenges and lessons.
How was the last decade? What would you remember the most? The last decade is my first decade in this profession, but I will still remember it most for the decisions I have made, both personally and professionally. When I look back, 90 % of those decisions were taken when I was against the tide and that made all the difference.
What’s the best compliment you’ve received and you remember to date? There are many memorable ones, all of which are so humbling and I am so grateful, but I think it has to be Jaggu dada(Jackie Shroff). I don’t know if he remembers, but after he saw my film Shor Se Shuruat he compared me to a young Al Pacino. That was a very touching moment for me. FACE MAGAZINE

Tell us about your recent release Betaal. Betaal is a Zombie horror-thriller series set in India. It is the first of its kind in India of this genre and a very new one for me too as an actor. Its storyline is gripping and the edge of the seat scary, that’s the feedback we are getting from audiences, its produced by Red chilies Entertainment directed by Patrick Graham and Nikhil Mahajan has a stellar star cast and is now streaming on Netflix. I play a young Rookie Army officer (Nadir Haq) whose journey starts with a zest to prove himself but things pan out very differently for him in the show. I got to explore a part of me that I never thought I had or even dreamed of doing. It was quite a rollercoaster making this one.
Upcoming projects that you are looking forward to. My next is a film titled June, starring Neha Pendse and me directed by Vaibhav Khishti and Suhrud Godbole, written and produced by Nikhil Mahajan and it’s a film that is extremely special to me. Probably my most challenging role to date. Apart from that, I am doing an online play called Lockdown Love. Produced by Geometry encompass and Kommune, directed by Sheena Khalid has a brilliant cast as well. Its India’s first-ever online romantic comedy performed Live. It follows a love story set in the times of the Coronna Pandemic. It’s a great feeling that despite restrictions and theatres being closed, we can still reach and entertain our audiences.

About lockdown activity The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown is an unprecedented situation, one with looming uncertainty and restlessness. After focusing on grocery shopping and home chores for the first few days, I was quickly starting to slip into despair myself. That’s when I relied on the artist within me and started spinning at home, just for myself. This changed my personal energy greatly and that’s when I thought why not share the good vibes with the world! With literally no plan or agenda I started doing Live sets on JUNE 2020

my Instagram page and would play whatever music I was feeling that night. It was a unique opportunity in itself where a DJ can play music just for himself without a client brief or a club’s theme for that night. So I played my heart out! It started with 20-25 people joining at a time, but what kept me going was that the 25 people who joined didn’t leave till I finished my set. Very quickly those 25 people started calling their friends to my Live sets, and what I witnessed was a whole group of strangers from across India and corners of the world socializing and partying together on my Live chats. You

won’t believe me when I say that I am a camera-shy artist, and I was very nervous about being in such close quarters with my audience. But it was the people who really contributed to my energy, and I started interacting with my audience as I had never done before! I had to make do with the limited resources I had at home during lockdown but I put in all possible efforts to bring a new experience to my listeners every gig, be it with my setups, my music videos, or my music. My regular listeners UNEQ Events and Joel started to double up as my promoters as well and I’m so

proud to say that now we have a community of music lovers and stay-at-home partygoers called #REGGERS. UNEQ has in fact been extremely supportive of my activity as it doesn’t benefit anyone in a monetary way, but they wanted to spread some positivity just as much as I did. I had never imagined that what started as my personal quarantine activity has now become so many people’s weekly agenda and I’m so humbled that I can contribute in some small positive way to alleviate people from the uncertainty and stress of the times we are living in.

I would also like to put to your notice the pandemic that we are looking at in the face is a result of the 5G test that was perfomed in Wuhan city. Research shows that pandemics have occured in last 200 years whenever there has been an upsurge in demand in the industrial and technological sector. I wish each one of us to ask ourselves how many cellphones and laptops have we changed in the past years. The craving for newer, faster gadgets, the lack of patience and desire to always remain connected to the internet must be looked at. In various drives to clean up I started collecting waste items. I asked people to give away anything they did not need. I received many items like plastic bottles, glass bottles, metal cans, unfunctional electronics and its parts. I started making art installations out of it. Kapala- the 14ft tall art installation made out of electronic waste was a human skull that I made as a reflection of man himself, of how we humans are becoming by falling prey to the mindless consumerism. It travelled to various art festivals around the country and was displayed at India Art Fair and Kala Ghoda Art Festival, Mumbai, 2014. Then I have made a Pegasus out of dumped vehicle parts which is now a part of somebody’s private collection at Kundan Valley, Kalote and many more.

Whenever I exhibited my art work common people would come and talk to me and tell me how relatable they found my work. The sculptures were made up of trash, the stuff of daily use that had been thrown as garbage. This kind of social engagement is my inspiration. Conception of art as an experience is something I constantly work on. I urge each one reading this article to gather the non-biodegradable items in their own houses and create an art work out of it. For inspiration you may also look up the internet at the work of artists around the world who have created amazing art work out of trash, including some items of household use. Each one of us has to be responsible and stop the waste at its source, before it reaches the rivers and oceans especially before the monsoon. I look forward to collaborate with more and more artists and enthusiasts who work towards the same goal of upkeeping the environmental balance. I am creating a sculpture park near Mumbai and as the lockdown opens I am looking forward to host workshops for everyone who wants to learn how to upcycle trash.

he aesthetics of Madhuri’s art engage essentially with beauty, vitality and sensuality. Her oeuvre takes the viewer beyond the tangible which the bare eye can see. Around 2002 Madhuri took to sculpture, crafting works of scrap metal, “If this attribute is explored in its entirety then it transforms sculpture into an object that offers continual, changing and never-ending surprises and engagement. To me sculpture is an attempt to understand and realize more completely what form and shape are all about. Everything-from scrap metal to elements of nature-can offer a start for a new idea. She discovered a proclivity for crafting scrap metal into utilitarian and decorative objects and has since then created many of these ‘assemblages’, as she likes to call them. After dedicating a majority of her career to her favorite medium– oil on canvas, sculpture has provided her with a refreshing alternative from the two dimensionalities of painting.

Madhuri’s fairly comprehensive, vast and varied repertoire, also includes exemplary creatives made out of reused and recycled material. Reflective of her ecological and environmental concerns, they flow from her love for nature, beauty and aesthetics. Madhuri has created a number of these assemblages, which are essentially tangible representations of thought or narrative created using a combination of found objects, memory, movement and drawing. This is not simply a form but a ‘thing’, which breathes and lives its own existence.

She says “It was hard for me to let go off my used brushes, paint tubes with their colored knobs, palette knives, dividers, compasses etc…They had finished their life for all but for me I wanted them to live on.” So, she utilized them by breaking them apart and reinventing them into artworks. The series of the works with recycled materials is to reflect and emphasize in my belief of reincarnation and the circle of life and death. Used material, recycled and used again gives me the feeling of giving life to a dead object and creating a piece of art which can live for years to come with a renewed existence of aesthetic appeal. Most of my sculptures are conceived in the figurative form which further strengthens my belief in the recreating of life”. The exquisite green-house of her own design that forms a part of her studio and home, adorns some of her sculptures and installations that she has made out of recycled material. Another body of her work includes masks, celestial beings, and other-worldly creatures in multimedia including discarded recording tapes and disks, wool, beads and glass pieces etc. There are other amazing murals, impressive sculptures and usable items of furniture in her repository, attracting critical acclaim and are much appreciation from connoisseurs. The multitalented and hardworking Madhuri, ever keen on experimenting, has also created artefacts including lights and chandeliers as well as chairs and tables, besides abstract, impressionist and surrealist paintings. Art that matters is the art which communicates at a profound level and thus be receptive to successive generations of human experience. COVID-19 is bringing about a whole set of new challenges in every possible realm; art industry being one of them. Given the rapidly evolving situation around the FACE MAGAZINE

pandemic is changing how we live and work in ways we would not have thought before- today’s new normal for me as an artist is that I’ve resorted to more sustainable art. Remember, the actions you take now will reflect in the future and emerge from this crisis transformed for the better. We all have to explore ways in which our practices can adjust, shape, or reorder across multiple dimensions and call it the ‘New Normal’- the artist marks it with her unique touch making it her very own. Dhruva Paknikar The Rising Designer
B
orn in a higher middle-class family, Dhruva was always exposed to both the ends of the world. Schooled in one of the most prestigious schools in India, Jnana Prabodhini, he was taught about solving third world problems, as well as debating about the first world problems very smartly. It was very soon that he realized he wanted to create experiences that people would cherish and celebrate using.All his school projects were in the same direction. In 2007, as his school projectDhruva had designed a building for his School’s new premises. The very next year, he managed to design 47 buildings with their 3D models and an entire city as a project and got a chance to showcase it an entire week at the School’s Annual Display. He secured a place at the MIT Institute of Design in the discipline of Product Design. Here too, he was taught to solve problems, create experiences and products in different sectors like tabletop, lighting, etc. In his very first year at MIT, Dhruva designed a product called “The Shoulder Walker”- a walking frame for the specially-abled people

having Cerebral Palsy. The product was highly recognized and was used in the PIN (Pune Institute of Neurology) and many other platforms. In his 2nd year, Dhruva developed a product for a company called Suyash Solutions Pvt. Ltd, in collaboration with SRL Probes (Italy) - named “Microtemp” for foundry use. His first mass-manufactured product was sold in 17 countries at the age of 20. Just by the time he graduated, he had more than 20 products that he designed available in the international markets. Later, he moved to France to be a part of Strate Ecole de Design in Paris where he studied lifestyle, brand, and packaging design. Dhruva was introduced to the “style” and “art” aspect of the design. Visiting galleries for hours and hours observing the works Leonardo Da’ Vinci, Pablo Picasso, Claude Monet, Rhedeon, VanGogh was his favorite holiday. He worked very closely with the famous designer Emmanuel Cairo (who is responsible
for designing the Paris Trams and trash bins of Paris to name a few) as an intern, where he got to learn about the styling, structures, and a complete European aspect of design. He also worked with other great designers like Jaques Dolle (Design head - Alcatel Mobile at that time), Klaus Peter Speidel (DirectorVienna University), and studied brand design under the tutelage of Illustrators like Phillippe LoPresti, who all gave him splendid testimonials. Dhruva’s project “Headpods” - which was a headphone that regenerates energy from the lost vibrations, was showcased as the “Best Outgoing Project” at Strate Ecole de Design that year. His technically complex product - Dominix Band was theoretically demonstrated at a pitched debate at the Strathclyde University, Glasgow UK. At Strate, Dhruva had designed one product named “Cubos” which was nominated for the “French School Design Awards” in 2015 JUNE 2020 133
by the Government of France. Later in 2018, it was selected as the “Best of the Best” at the Asian Kids Design Venture Awards, Seoul, South Korea. Later, he interned with IKEA, Velizy FR, the worlds leading furniture brand; where he learned a lot about “living” and living design! One of the projects he designed for IKEA was the “Elewashh” - A unique product which helps to connect a mother with her child while working in the kitchen- teaching him/her the essence of washing veggies, fruits before eating. Dhruva, a travel enthusiast, traveled through Europe, the UK and the Isle of Man, where he worked with some great brands like Calvin Klein, English Breakfast, Rolex (Wimbledon). He also met a few budding entrepreneurs who later became his retainer clients! He helped Leela’s Kitchen, now one of the biggest Spice company on the island thet he grew from scratch by branding the company and designing the packaging of its products. He learned a lot about electronics and productizing technology while working with Mitsubishi Electric, with the pioneer of PLC in India- Mr. Farooq Merchant when he came back to India for a short period of time after that. Later, in 2015, Dhruva got an opportunity to work with Karim Rashid (one of the world’s most influential designers and the most famous industrial designer having said by TIME magazine 2009). Having an office near the Time Square, Midtown Manhattan, working at the worlds one of the best design offices was a privilege. He worked closely with Karim himself on Luxury Lifestyle Design for big Clients like NC Nordic Care, Maiori, Horm, Arlight, Shifa, Pepsi, Alessi, etc. He got to learn the design and business aspects of lifestyle, luxury, and experience design. He is the only Indian person having worked with Karim at his 15 people strong studio in New York. Apart from several products he designed, he was a part of the branding campaign design for Pepsi called “Mix it Up” which took place across California. He was also a part of the team responsible to design the Temptations Resort, Cancun Mexico. Not just as a product Designer, under Karim’s guidance FACE MAGAZINE

and his IP, Dhruva also created the famous portrait of Dr. Lamees Hamdan, Founder owner of Shifa Cosmetics, Dubai which was auctioned for a few million dollars. The products that Dhruva help design at KRInc were launched in the next couple of years at platforms like Salon’ De Mobil, Italy, American Furniture Fair, USA, London Design week, UK, Tokyo Design Week, Japan to name a few. EcoJun Capsule Bottles, Nina Santa Maria loungers, Manhattan Chair, Maiori Chair, Pixel chair, Arlight Lighting, MIX it UP- Pepsi were a few of his products. That’s when he started realizing the potential of having exposed to problem-solving and Luxury design together. “I wanted to make Smart Functional Art pieces. Products that will humanize the environment, that will ease life, solve small problems leading to bigger inventions.” Dhruva says. He also saw that India had many product designdriven brands but there was no Signature or Label brand working in all the
disciplines of design, offering a complete living experience. He started developing a philosophy where the global contemporary design would meet the Indian spiritual context. In his words, “I want to make spaces where we will start to define beauty in a humanist context, not a cultural one. Observing human tenancies and designing for a better living. Interestingly there is a lot of literature in India about the art of living. I’m trying to amalgamate the same into contemporary form and space design!” A ‘Dhruva Paknikar’ experience is an amalgam of beauty and being. ‘Conceived with Purity’, the brand thrives that every product is an amalgamation of contemporary design and Indian spirituality. He came back to India having the same vision. Of course, there were infinite problems! The first one was the investment. He didn’t want to take any money from home so he paired up with his childhood friend and his cousin to start Dominix Strategic Design Pvt. Ltd.,

Dhruva has showcased his photography at various exhibitions over the past few years. He has also created a series called “Absolids”. Absolids (Abstract Solids) deals with a completely different medium of expression. Made in 3D software, the art forms are unconstrained by the conventional mediums of art. How do we stay at home and still stay fit and healthy, even when we don’t have our Fitness Centres, dance classes, Gyms or personal trainers around anymore? Don’t sweat the small stuff. It’s easy. I’ll show you how.
Exercise Equipment Substitutes Any household accessory, basically anything which can be found at home, can be used as a piece of workout equipment – furniture like a chair, a table, a bed. Water bottles could be used to substitute weights or kettlebells. A Dupatta tied up with a knot in it can be used to substitute a resistance band or Theraband. A towel can be used to substitute a floor-mat. Even a wall can be a very valuable piece of equipment.
Chair Workouts Seated on a chair you can work any and every body part. Seated facing backward on a chair you can use the back rest of the chair against your arms to provide a fabulous upper body workout by pressing inwards against the back of the chair, placing your hands on top of the chair and pressing down, sticking your hands into the woodwork of the backrest and pressing outwards, are some basic exercises you can do. Sitting on the chair in the usual fashion but right on the edge of it, to work the stomach muscles, you can start leaning backward rounding the spine over & drawing the abdominals in strongly, disallowing the upper back to touch the back of the chair but still keeping it as close to the same as possible.

From here you can get a large variety of variations of abdominal exercises in, which include all 4 sets of Ab muscles, as can be seen in Image 1. From the same seated position a lot of leg work can happen as shown in Image 2. Seated on the floor with your feet aligned against the chair legs a lot of fabulous lower body work can happen by your pressing inward or outward against the chair legs.
Water Bottles Assuming you don’t have dumbbells or kettlebells at home, use either sealed bottles of water (to prevent leakage during your workout) or a large book – they both are heavy & so make for great substitutes for weights. Any sort of freehand exercises you were doing back in the day in your gym with dumbbells can be done with these for resistance now, as seen in Image 3. Kettlebell exercises are also fantastic, many of them being full body or total body conditioning exercises, so you target many body parts in a single exercise.
Dupatta Workout Assuming you don’t have a Theraband at home, use a Dupatta (knotted up, for resistance). Other alternatives could be scarves or shawls which similarly could be knotted up to be used in place of a Theraband. Compound upper body work including pulling wide apart in front of you, overhead, even behind you, can provide a fabulous workout. Seated on the floor with the Dupatta around your ankles, pulling the legs wide apart up, or upward, in & out will very effectively work different muscles of the lower body. It can even be used fantastically for compound abdominal work along with lower body work as seen in Image. FACE MAGAZINE

Keeping Your Weight In Check To prevent weight gain try to get at least 45 minutes of cardiovascular activity in the house daily - anything you can do – March, jog, knee ups, front or side kicks, hamstring curls, step touches, jumping jacks, anything at all. Combine this with a little bit of muscle work- even just 5 - 10 minutes is good. Compound exercises or total body conditioning exercises work best – where a large number of muscle groups work simultaneously, e.g. like in planks, push-ups, squats and lunges. She is currently working as Senior Sustainability Expert with Integrative Design Solution Pvt Ltd, Delhi. She was earlier handling 15 states and UTs as a Project Lead for Energy Conservation cells, under AlILSG, Delhi. She also has her own consulting firm for Sustainable Architecture and Energy efficiency in buildings, in Raipur as Elemensis design studio.

How important do you think are eco-friendly and sustainable constructions right now? With the current world focus on infrastructure development, resource depletion, and hence, derivatively, their wastage has increased exponentially. Although unnoticed by the common folk till now, this depletion is so drastic that commodities like drinking water, which were once taken for granted, have already become a scarcity in some parts of the world. So, infrastructure development, that too development of buildings being one of the gargantuan consumers of natural resources should be designed in such a way to not only optimize the resource consumption but also to focus on recycling, re-usage, and regeneration of resources. If we wish to continue our current living styles and not to deteriorate into some post-apocalyptic world, we need to integrate sustainable development into our lives instantly.
Can you please explain energy-efficient homes and offices for people unknown to the concept? The simplest definition of efficiency is optimal usage. And, optimal usage translates into squeezing the most out of something without destroying or even damaging it. So, energy efficiency in its most basic definition is the optimization of consumption of energy, a negation of wastage, and the conservation of resources utilized to produce energy. JUNE 2020 155
It can be defined as the reduction in consumption of energy within a building, without reducing the comfort levels of the individuals occupying the said building. A simple phenomenon like the introduction of daylight into the building, reduction of heat gain in the building, reuse of the water within the building complex, the introduction of the renewable sources of energy into the building, although appearing to be minor, turn out to be game-changers in the long run.
There is always been a notion that sustainable materials are financially more pressing than the usual ones, is it a myth or how far is it true?

Sustainable development is everything opposite to the aforementioned causes of global warming and hence it is easy to deduce that global warming is bound to reduce with the increase in sustainable development all over the world. To emphasize this further a comparison of global warming causes and sustainable development criteria negating the cause is irreplaceable. For global warming consequential of deforestation, sustainable development provides for the development of local environments, encourages roof and indoor gardens, and emphasizes on the use of alternate materials as a replacement of wood. For global warming caused due to wastage
of resources, sustainable development provides and focuses upon optimization of usage of resources, reuse of resources, encourages innovations to reduce consumption, and supports research for alternates. As a counter of pollution led global warming, sustainable development incorporates changes in practices of developments, encompasses the development of pollution/contamination standards, promotes the stringent implementation of rules/regulations/policies, and concentrates upon the usage of pollution curbing devices/techniques. From this comparison, it is evident that as sustainable development catches pace, global warming will lose steam and may even come to a standstill in not so far a future.
What is the current government role and contributions to encourage the use of energy-efficient buildings? Governments, both central and state have understood the vitality of sustainable development and are tirelessly toiling to achieve the vision of sustainable development as a habit in society. The governments are working on the principle of simultaneous please and penalize policy by providing incentives to overachievers and penalizing the violators. The Energy Conservation Act (2001), the Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC), Ujala scheme, are some of the commendable initiatives taken up by the central government(s) over the years. While state governments have taken their initiatives by providing incentives to consumers to encourage sustainable development. This zeal and enthusiasm of the governments have percolated to the last levels with the Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) making their own rules/regulations/policies to adopt sustainable development. A minute example of this is the compulsion of inclusion of rainwater harvesting systems/ techniques in all new buildings by all the Urban Local Bodies.

How and what can we do at our own homes to make them more energy-efficient and eco friendly? We can adopt many simple and effortless practices to achieve better energy efficiency and eco-friendly environment at our homes. We can start from the fundamental turn off, when not in use mentality. It can be for energy, water, devices, generators, etc. Next, we can gradually and eventually replace current household items/devices with more energy-efficient ones and can try to include energy efficiency of an electrical/electronic device as a desirable feature whenever looking to replace or buy something in the future. Designers should opt for passive design strategies and try to reduce the heat in grace inside the building as much as possible. A well ventilated and naturally daylit buildings designed with the use of locally available and eco-friendly building materials can be claimed as sustainable and efficient design buildings.
What is the ‘Green Building concept’, has the Indian construction market started using it? Green Building Concept In the simplest of terms, a green building is an environmentally friendly building that preserves more than it damages. Also, a green building does not focus on just one characteristic of the environment but, rather seeks overall preservation and conservation of nature. Use in Indian Construction Market: Yes, the Indian Construction market has not only started using it, but it is becoming a standard norm at quite a rapid pace. Both the client and the constructor are trying that a structure should be developed as an eco-friendly one. The phenomenon has caught up and gelled so well in the Indian scenario, that there are already bodies (both government and private) making standards for sustainable construction and trying to implement policies accordingly.
Which is better: a recycled material or a natural material? It is a varied opinion in the current trend but progressively the focus is shifting towards usage of recycled materials. Collective, cumulative, societal experience of the years has taught that the availability of any natural resource, however abundant it may be, is limited, whereas there is no limitation of usage for a material recycled time and again. This physical evidence and the growing scarcity of the resources point to recycled material is better.

New Normal Weddding
Weddings are deeply engraved in the Indian society and the Indian culture, so no matter what, it is going nowhere. Depending on the restrictions put in by the government and in the current situation, from now to at least until November, people with a gathering of 50 guests will still get married. The trend is moving towards the big fat Indian wedding getting postponed; rather than canceled. A lot of people are opting to get married with an intimate family of about 50 people initially and then host a larger celebration, once the situation improves and there is light on how gatherings can be held safely. m looking forward to a good news about this whole COVID-19 situation because I know and understand that a lot of people, including myself, are finding it hard to deal with isolation but I also believe that we all need to stay inside in order for the issue to get better.

No one wants to put their guess in jeopardy of falling ill but are hopeful that at some time the situation will get better and come under control. Once things are better, they are looking forward to bigger celebrations; but for now, the flavor of the season is small, intimate, and concentrated weddings with up to 50 guests. The hosts, especially, are taking a lot of precautions for safety - which is a top priority. They are very concerned about the sanitization of the venue, who is
handling the kitchen and catering, and how high their hygiene levels are. They want to ensure their guests are well taken care of and not put in any danger of any kind. For during the events, we are getting requests to set up sanitization booths, keep lots of sanitizers handy, print face masks with wedding branding, and such intimate detailing for the intimate small functions. This will be the norm until there is a vaccine or medicine that is developed or people get used to and start living carefully with this virus in their midst.

Can you please tell us your thoughts about food concerning mental health and how it affects our overall mental state and moods?
W
hole foods that are rich in antioxidants, Omega-3 fatty acids, essential amino acids, probiotics/prebiotics, nutrientdense in C, D, E & B vitamins and the minerals magnesium, zinc and potassium all support the body in ways that help to lower stress, anxiety and other depressive symptoms. Foods high in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory levels help to protect our whole body and especially our brains, from oxidative stress and inflammation. Omega-3 rich foods are great for lowering stress and anxiety because they contain alphalipoic acids (EPA & DHA), which help to reduce inflammation, regulate our neurotransmitters, and promote healthy brain function. Foods that have high levels of Vitamin D, magnesium can help calm neurotransmitters and helps with symptoms of depression. Zinc, which is essential for brain and nerve development, has also been linked to lowering anxiety. However, when necessary, I will employ the use of modern medicine, as directed and under the supervision of a physician.
What lifestyle changes would you suggest for people to remain fit and acclimatize to these extended lockdowns? Daily movement, meditation in addition to healthy, vibrant meal choices are the keys to both physical fitness, as well as emotional fitness during the extended lockdown.

Eating foods that will center or calm your energy center shifts your energy from anxious and scared, to balanced and strong. The first chakra, or the root chakra, guides this grounding, safe, and secure frequency, so eating foods that support this chakra will help you shift your thoughts and emotions. Try to be mindful of eating too many foods that will stimulate anxious or unrestful feelings, like caffeine, sugar, and processed foods. These types of foods might comfort your mind at the moment, but long term (or even within a few short hours), they can destabilize your vibration and weaken your immune functions. Instead, reach for any vegetable that is grown in the soil of the earth will carry with it a powerful, grounding vibrational frequency. In my practice of Culinary Alchemy®, I teach people that the energy and the thoughts you put into your food can directly affect the energetic vibration of the food, as well as how your body receives it. So, while you’re cooking, think about how the meal you are preparing will nourish you and your loved ones and keep you healthy and your immune systems strong. Being conscious of the foods that you are eating is a great way to help your body feel balanced and secure. Our immune system is our strongest defense during this time and eating foods to boost our system is the most important. I recommend that people use nutrientdense ingredients that are high in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, like colorful fruits and vegetables. Even if frozen options are your best choices, they’re wonderful! Most vegetables and fruits are frozen at their peak ripeness. Ingredients Burger Patties 1 pound ground chicken 1/2 medium onion diced finely 3 garlic cloves pressed 1 teaspoon ginger grated 2 green chilies minced 1 tablespoon ground coriander 1 teaspoon garam masala 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin 1/2 cup quinoa cooked (optional) 1/2 cup cilantro chopped 1.5 teaspoons kosher salt 1 tablespoon olive oil To Serve: 4 burger buns 2 lettuce leaves tomato sliced 1 medium red onion sliced
INSTRUCTION 1. Preheat the oven or grill at 375 degrees. Line a large baking tray with parchment paper and spray olive over it. Keep aside. 2. In a medium mixing bowl add all the ingredients for burger patties and mix well. 3. Flatten the mix in the bowl and then make 2 cross slits in the middle to divide the mix into 4 quarters. 4. Use a spoon or spatula shape each quarter into a round ball and drop it on the lined tray, 3 to 4 inch apart from each other Shape into a round circle with a spoon and then gently press the meat into a flat 3 to 4 inch patty. Press the middle of the patty with your thumb or back of a spoon, this will allow the patty surface to cook flat and not puff up. 5. Lightly spray over the burgers and cook in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. No need to turn halfway over. JUNE 2020 169
To cook on a grill: Preheat the grill at 375 degrees. Line the grill with aluminum foil and spray oil over. Place the ground chicken mix on the foil with 3 to 4-inch space around each patty. Shape into a round circle with a spoon and then gently press the meat into a flat 3 to 4-inch patty. Press the middle of the patty with your thumb or back of a spoon. Cook for 8 to 10 minutes and then flip over and cook the other side for an additional 8 to 10 minutes.
QUINOA ALMOND DATE TRUFFLES Healthy snack and dessert with quinoa, almond and dates
INGREDIENTS 1/3 cup quinoa 1/2 cup whole almonds 1/4 cup finely chopped almonds 16 pitted dates 3 tbsp peanut butter or any nut butter 1/2 cup dark chocolate chips 1. Rinse quinoa thoroughly 2-3 time. Drain the water. 2. To make quinoa in the Instant Pot – Add 1/3 cup of water and quinoa to a stainless steel bowl. Add 1 cup of water to the Instant Pot insert. Place the quinoa bowl on the trivet and place the trivet in the Instant Pot. Close the lid and pressure cook for 4 minutes followed by 10 minute natural pressure release. FACE MAGAZINE

INSTRUCTIONS 3. In a blender or food processor add whole almonds, dates, peanut butter, chocolate chips and cooked quinoa. Blend together for 2-3 minutes or until all the ingredients are wellblended. 4. Scoop out the mixture one table spoon at a time and roll into round truffles. Then roll them in finely chopped almonds. Chill in the refrigerator until ready to be served.

To make quinoa on Stove top – Add 1/3 cup of water and quinoa to a pot and bring to boil over medium-high heat. Lower the heat and cook quinoa covered for 10 mins.

Turmeric Roasted Cauliflower Tacos with Chipotle Mayo Tender roasted turmeric cauliflower served on warm tortillas, topped with cilantro, cabbage slaw, avocado and your choice of chipotle mayo or cilantro jalapeño mayo
INGREDIENTS 1 cauliflower cut into 1 inch florets (1.5 LB cut or 5 cups) 1.5 teaspoons kosher salt 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper 3/4 teaspoon ground turmeric 1/4 cup olive oil Chipotle Mayo ½ cup mayo use vegan mayo for vegan tacos 1 tablespoon water 2 teaspoons lime juice ⅛ teaspoon salt more to taste ½ teaspoon chili powder
Slaw 1 cup red cabbage finely chopped 1 cup green cabbage finely chopped 1/2 cup red onions thinly sliced
2 canned chipotle peppers substitute with 1 teaspoon smoked paprika and 1/2 teaspoon chipotle powder

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Cut the cauliflower into small 1 inch florets. When cutting the cauliflower, first remove all the excess outer layer of thick steams and leaves and trim the main steam. Then starting from the bottom the stem so florets almost start to fall off. This will make sure that you have minimal crumbly mess. Then cut the florets into smaller 1 inch pieces. 2. Place the cauliflower in a large mixing bowl and add turmeric, salt, black pepper and oil. Mix well and spread evenly in a single layer on a parchment lined baking tray. Roast cauliflower in a preheated oven at 400 degrees for 15 to 20 minutes or until the cauliflower starts to turn golden brown on the edges. Make the sauce. I have 2 favorite sauce recipes that like to serve with these tacos. 1. Cilantro jalapeùo sauce AKA Crack Sauce from one of my favorite blogs thechutneylife 2. Homemade Chipotle Mayo. To make this simply add mayo, water, lime juice, salt, chili powder and chipotle chili to a blender and blend until smooth. I use canned chipotle chili in adobo sauce and pick out just the chilies. I add 1 to 2 chiles in this recipe but you can add more or less depending on the spice level you like. If you do not have canned chipotle chili you can also use 1 to 2 teaspoons of chipotle chili powder. Cabbage Slaw • Make the cabbage slaw by mixing red cabbage, green cabbage, red onions, carrots and cilantro in a bowl. Add some fresh lime juice to brighten up the flavors. Assemble the tacos 1. Next, warm the tortillas either on a pan, grill or directly on the stovetop. I prefer the stove top method as it results in slightly charred but smokey tortillas. Using tongs hold the tortilla directly on the flame and cook each side for 10 to 15 seconds. 2. To assemble the tacos, place 2 to 3 spoonful of roasted caulilfower on the tortilla. Add cabbage slaw, avocados, pickled onions and drizzle the spicy sauce on top. Serve immediately with a squeeze of fresh lime. JUNE 2020 173
I like to serve pickled onions on tacos. Here is my quick recipe: 1. Thinly slice 1 large red onion, I use mandolin for this. Add the onions to a glass jar. 2. In a medium bowl mix 1 cup hot water, ½ cup apple cider vinegar, 1 teaspoon salt , 1 tablespoon sugar. Mix until the sugar dissolves. 3. Pour over sliced onions. Refrigerate. Tastes better next day so make ahead and they stay good for 3 to 4 days.
INSTANT POT COCONUT CURRY NOODLE SOUP Vegan Instant Pot Coocnut Curry Noodle Soup loaded with vegetables in a flavorful, creamy and spicy coconut curry broth
INGREDIENTS 3 tablespoons coconut oil or regular cooking oil 12 to 10 ounces extra firm tofu 1 to 2 cups red pepper cut into 2-inch long, 1/4-inch thick wedges 1 to 2 cups broccoli cut into 1-inch small florets 1 large onion thinly sliced 8 OZ noodles udon noodles or linguine 1 to 3 tablespoons red curry paste 2 carrots peeled and cut into 2-inch long, 1/4-inch thick wedges FACE MAGAZINE

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Cut all the veggies. Turn the Instant Pot to saute mode and heat 1 tablespoon of oil. Add onions and saute for 2 minutes. Add broccoli and peppers and saute for another 2 mins. Take all the veggies out and reserve. 2. Next step is to stir-fry tofu for which you have 2 options: 3. Add 1 tablespoon oil to a non-stick skillet, add the cut tofu and cook until both sides turn golden brown. Take the tofu out and reserve. 4. You can also stir-fry the tofu in the Instant Pot insert, just note that the tofu may stick to the bottom of the pan. Set the Instant Pot to saute mode and heat 1 tablespoon oil. Add the tofu and cook for 2 minutes on each side or until both sides turn golden brown. Take the tofu out and reserve. Deglaze the pot really well before
moving on to the next step. 5. Add remaining 1 tablespoon oil to the Instant Pot and add red curry paste. Saute for 30 seconds. Add carrots, noodles, broth and coconut milk. Add ginger and salt. Gently stir pushing all the noodles under the liquids. 6. Close the Instant Pot with pressure valve to sealing set to Pressure Cook/ Manual for 3 minutes. Note: read the instructions on the noodles and pressure cook for half the time minus 1, so if the package says 8 mins, cook for 3 mins). Quick release. Stir in cooked tofu and veggies. Set the Instant Pot to saute mode and cook untill the soup comes to a gentle boil. Adjust salt and pepper to taste.

FACE MAGAZINE We have always thought about food in context to our health, as much as we involve our self in the cooking and consumption of the food, we have to start considering the effects of the food we eat on the environment as well. This is not an article about how to handle your food waste but we are going to talk about how the food got to your plate in the first place. Everything that we eat and drink has a lifecycle from where it was produced/manufactured to being served on your plate.

Have you considered the effects of what you eat on the planet, and made changes that will protect not only the Earth but also your health and the well-being of generations to come? I am sure we already take a few steps to safeguard our environment, perhaps you recycle glass, plastic and paper, and compost organic waste; shop with reusable bags; rely heavily on public transportation or bicycles or, failing that, at least drive fuel-efficient cars. But its high time that we considered the serious effects of what we eat on the planet. Since food is one recurring factor and involves a massive range of processes to reach our plate, we need to educate ourselves and understand the carbon footprints of food that we leave behind. There is a category of foods that can help you and the environment. Food’s carbon footprint, or foodprint, is the greenhouse gas emissions produced by growing, rearing, farming, processing, transporting, storing, cooking, and disposing of the food you eat. https://www.greeneatz.com/foods-carbon-footprint These are called ‘Sustainable foods’. What is sustainable food? Sustainable foods are real natural foods that our bodies were designed to eat. Sustainable food tastes better because it is local; it is not shipped far away, as is most conventional food. This means it is picked closer to its peak ripeness, allowing its flavor to fully develop. Sustainable food is healthy for us. It is grown without reliance on synthetic chemicals and fertilizers that poison our bodies. And the food is grown without being genetically modified or irradiated. Sustainable food is better for the environment and produces less waste. Compared to industrial farms, smaller farms do not depend as much on water and fossil fuels for success. Sustainable farming supports local farmers and the local economy instead of large corporations. In a nutshell we have to make a serious effort towards buying only local food and foods that do not involve large packaging layers. Not only we get freshly produced ingredients, the best part t that it has not been laminated in plastic or infused with preservatives for traveling the country to get to your shopping cart. The rarer the ingredient in your cart the farther it has traveled to get to you. If you are in Delhi and are able to buy mangoes in August, chances are that the mangoes have been stored and traveled a long way to get you.

This can be calculated by counting the ‘Food miles’, which tells you how far your food has been shipped. The blueberries you buy at the grocery store may have been air-freighted from Chile, which means those bite-size delights have a monster-sized carbon footprint. If you want to calculate your foods’ carbon footprint, put a “carbon footprint calculator” to work. You can find a food-specific calculator at Eatlowcarbon. org. Dr. Walter C. Willett, professor of epidemiology and nutrition at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and a contributor to the Lancet report told Nutrition Action Healthletter, “We simply cannot eat the amounts of beef that we’re now consuming and still have a future for our grandchildren.” Let’s look at the few most dangerous foods that destroy the planet environmentally.

Beef (from dedicated beef herds) Greenhouse gas emissions per kilogram, in Co2 equivalents, is 60. The high carbon footprint of beef overwhelmingly comes from methane and land use, while transportation emissions are small, similar to most food products. Some beef comes from dairy cattle, which has a smaller footprint. Cheese: “You’re producing the milk from a dairy cow that is emitting large quantities of methane, which has a global-warming impact 25 times higher than carbon. And then you have the methane and nitrous oxide that are also generated from the cow’s manure. And then all of the grains that go into feeding the cows, which range from corn to alfalfa and other forage, and there’s a footprint associated with that.”

Chocolate When it comes to being environment friendly chocolate has a dark(er) side. Chocolate’s raw materials, including milk powder, cocoa derivatives, sugar and palm oil, and its packaging are major environmental villains. Cocoa, sugar, and, in particular, palm oil production are driving deforestation. The production of milk powder also is very carbon-intensive, largely because dairy cows generate a lot of methane while producing milk. For this reason, milk chocolate is more environmentally harmful than dark chocolate.

Palm Oil Palm oil is a vegetable oil that makes its way into about 50 percent of all consumer goods, so everything from margarine to shampoo to fuels. Deforestation related to palm oil is estimated to contribute more than 558 million metric tons of CO2 to the atmosphere by 2020. Lamb According to the Environmental Working Group, every four oz. of lamb consumed is equivalent to driving seven miles in your car. That’s an average of about 20 kilograms of CO2 released into the atmosphere for every pound of lamb. Every 2 pounds of lamb produced requires 2,314 gallons of water.

Not every tasty morsel you put in your mouth is part of an evil plot to destroy the world, however. Which foods are safe? “Grass-fed” Beef If you eat beef products, you can’t do much better ecologically than grassfed. Grass-fed means the cattle are raised and fed on pastures as opposed to in feedlots, where they’re shoveled grains and antibiotics. So why would farms even bother to feed cows grain? Factory farms feed their livestock grain because the government provides large subsidies to farms that produce grains like soy and corn. But the meat from grain-fed animals tends to be lower in “good fat” and higher in “bad fat.” These same nutrients are found in the meat you buy when you’re looking to grill a steak.
Organically produced food Organic farming aims to minimize environmental impact through methods like crop rotation, compost, biological rather than chemical pest control, and green rather than synthetic fertilizers. Crop rotation keeps the biodiversity of the soil strong. Planting the same crops over and over in the same soil robs the soil of its nutrients over time and results in the need for fertilizers and soil additives. Lentils are humble superfoods. They live in the legume family (seeds of plants) and are great sources of fiber, protein, and various nutrients. They have a very low carbon footprint — 43 times less than beef, for example — and require little water to grow. They also clean and fortify soil to make it easier to grow other crops. And they’re extremely cheap. Following a vegan diet According to a new study, a vegan diet is the “single biggest measure” that can be taken to reduce environmental pollution. Researchers at the University of Oxford found that not eating meat and dairy products can reduce a person’s carbon footprint by up to 73%. When looked at in detail, we can understand that even if you don’t want to give up or stop consuming a specific set of ingredients, we can start taking some measures to reduce our carbon footprint through them too. Buying local should become a thumb rule for all of us where we buy produce only from our local farmers which ensures that we only get fresh seasonal food with lesser food miles. As we know now red meats and lamb can be seriously damaging to the environment, still, it might not be possible to completely cut these down or quit on them. Hence we need to start looking for substitutes and more important inform ourselves of brands that are doing their bit to reduce the impacts on the environment and buy only for them As we said its high time we start looking at the effect of what we eat on not only our bodies but our environment too.
