As I reminisce on the past six months of production on Façon Book Four, I remember the distinct moment I decided it would be the Iconic Australians Issue. I was sitting with my marketing director, Claudia, in the very exclusive showroom of a luxury jeweller, surrounded by millions of dollars of exquisite gems. Perhaps all the opulence went a little to my head but I turned to Claudia and in that moment I told her that Façon was going to do exclusive Q&As with Australia’s most iconic stars. Claudia looked a little apprehensive. The ying to my yang, Claudia is by nature somewhat overly cautious, whereas I swing a little the other way: a born risk taker and an eternal optimist.

I hope this summer you have the opportunity to relax and enjoy the luxury of perusing the glossy pages of Façon. Let it entertain and inspire you. Another person that I am eternally grateful to is the humble, kind, talented and ever so lovable Kate Ritchie. It was your support that made this book happen. You absolutely rocked in the colour red – and in every other way – and I had one of the most memorable weekends of my career shooting this cover with you at The Anchorage in Port Stephens. Thank you so very much. Along with our 25-page feature on Iconic Australians, we’ve also compiled a special report on the hottest Australian swimsuit labels for this season, chatted with some of the nation’s biggest beauty bloggers to get their beauty tips and tricks and of course, have brought you the latest in luxury fashion editorials and trends. I hope this summer you have the opportunity to relax and enjoy the luxury of perusing the glossy pages of Façon. Let it entertain and inspire you. There is nothing I enjoy quite as much as turning the pages of my favourite high-end fashion escapism that I hold dear.

It is these two traits, however, that I credit to living a life that I’d choose one hundred times over, even if I am in a constant

time with my beautiful family and to recharge for 2018 and Façon Book Five. I am already dreaming up quite possibly my biggest challenge yet. I can’t wait to share it with you.

campaigns and a million other commitments, the beautiful souls who we have been so privileged as to feature in our pages today were gracious enough to speak with our team.

Enjoy your Australian summer, there’s no place like it.

I cannot thank them all enough for being prepared to share a little bit of themselves with us and with you, the readers.

Glancing at the images of a beautiful woman in striking red you’d be forgiven for assuming she never doubts herself or her decisions. She is surrounded by crew and looks every part the glamorous star, dripping in jewels as she reclines by the sparkling ocean. It is another side to the famously down-to-earth, girl next door Kate Ritchie, and just one of the many roles she has added to her repertoire in recent years.

was the right decision and it was time for her to try her hand at something new. “I’d spent 20 years on the show and I was about to turn 30,” she says. “I just felt like I was moving into a new phase of my life and maybe that phase wouldn’t need to include Home and Away.” She didn’t have a job to go to, a fact that she was quite happy about. In fact, she wasn’t all that keen to get one.

Yet despite outwardly seeming to juggle all her titles with ease

“I was looking forward to taking a break from working. I’d been working since the age of eight. I also thought maybe I needed to give the public a bit of a break from me too,” she says with a laugh.

“When people look at the things I’m doing they assume I’m really comfortable where I am and where I belong,” Kate says.

As it turns out, the executives at Nova FM thought otherwise, contacting Kate shortly after she wrapped her last scene to see if she was interested in joining their Sydney breakfast show costarring with Merrick and Rosso.

Others include awarded actress, radio presenter, ambassador and published author.

Yet, as she reveals, it hasn’t always been that way. “Often it’s quite the opposite. I’m always questioning and always wondering whether I’m where I’m meant to be or if there are things I need to change.” It took hearing some public comments spoken by fellow presenter Amanda Keller as she was inducted into the radio Hall of Fame for Kate to put those niggling thoughts to bed.

“Before I knew it, I wasn’t having a holiday at all and I was doing breakfast radio with the boys.” Kate went on to spend two years rising at the unearthly hour of 4am. Despite starting work in darkness every morning, it was a job she loved and one that taught her a great deal. which is what I was used to. It really did teach me a great deal of

As it turns out, hearing Amanda speak at the recent ACRAS was enjoyable for more than just the dawning realisation that her

“I was dealing with having said goodbye to not only a job that I’d done for a long time but a really big part of me,” Kate says. “It was an interesting period of learning to let go.”

Kate and her co-hosts were also awarded Best On Air Team for their drive home show – Kate, Tim & Marty – for the second year running. “It was a great win and the boys continue to point out it just

Backing herself, however, proved worthwhile, with Kate also appearing around the same time on television drama Underbelly playing the role of Judi Kane. This scored her an AFI nomination and validated her decision to leave the soap.

While chapter two in Kate Ritchie’s career may be multi-faceted, chapter one was much more clear-cut.

In more recent years she also became a published author with the children’s book, I Just Couldn’t Wait To Meet You, again reinforcing she was on the right track.

This year marks 10 years since Kate bid farewell to little Sally Fletcher, who she played for the better part of 20 years on the iconic television series Home and Away. “I can’t quite believe it will be soon be 10 years,” she says. she says. Although she still feels very connected to the show, leaving Summer Bay did involve a very clear career transition for Kate. She left the show with little idea of what to do next, only that it

Although from the outside she was ticking rating goals, behind

“Part of leaving Home and Away was about proving to myself that I could do other things." Of course, given the nature of the television industry, she also needed other people to help her let go of Sally Fletcher. “In some ways, it didn’t so much matter what I thought I could do, in this industry you need acceptance from people around you,” she says. Fast-forward 10 years and Kate is that woman in red staring down the lens of acclaimed photographer, Peter Brew-Bevan.

The public may not be used to seeing her like this, but like most of us, Kate does enjoy playing this role every now and then. “I do enjoy getting dressed up, it’s fun and brings out the girly side of me,” she laughs. While that girly side still makes regular appearances, as Kate “What I’ve learnt most over the years – and it comes perhaps with maturity – is that I’m going to be a 70-year-old woman at one stage, looking back on my life and wondering why I was so worried all along and why I didn’t enjoy things more as opportunities came to me. “I’ve learnt to embrace the moments and enjoy them, because one day, that moment could have passed and I don’t want to have any regrets about that,” she says with conviction. And regrets, as she looks back on a most successful career, she can

Q.

YOU ARE ONE OF THE MOST AWARDED ACTRESSES OF OUR TIME. AS A GIRL DID YOU DREAM OF BECOMING AN ACTRESS OR DID YOU HAVE OTHER PLANS? I was always drawn to performing, whether it was dance or putting on the school play, or sitting in the theatre as an audience member myself. I adored going to the cinema, but I never considered that being an actor was something that one could do with one's life.

Q.

LEAVING OUR SHORES IN PURSUIT OF YOUR CRAFT IN YOUR EARLY 20S, YOU HAVE SPENT MANY YEARS LIVING AND WORKING ABROAD. WHAT DO YOU MISS MOST ABOUT AUSTRALIA? I went to university and drama school in Australia and have continued to work there ever since. Running the Sydney Theatre Company with my partner, Andrew Upton, was one of the greatest challenges and privileges of my career thus far. Not only did it allow us to reconnect with friends and colleagues in Australia, but it enabled us to engage with a whole raft of new people and be part of a fascinating national conversation.

Q.

Q.

YOU HAVE BEEN RECOGNISED FOR YOUR OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION TO THE ARTS, PHILANTHROPY AND THE COMMUNITY. IN THE YEARS TO COME HOW DO YOU HOPE TO BE REMEMBERED AND WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF SO FAR? You know, I think very little about legacy. How I am remembered when I am dead is far less concerning to me than how I behave in the present. YOU ARE AN AMBASSADOR FOR MANY WORTHWHILE AND IMPORTANT CAUSES, WHAT IS CLOSE TO YOUR HEART AT THE MOMENT?

Q.

I’ve been a Goodwill Ambassador for the UNHCR since the beginning of last year. There are so many pressing issues facing the world and so many worthy causes to support, but with over 65 million forcibly displaced people worldwide (we are currently witnessing the highest levels of displacement on record), it is vital that we deal with this as a global issue and that Australia acts compassionately to protect and defend the world's “processing” has been nothing short of reprehensible,

WHAT DOES A PERFECT AUSTRALIAN SUMMER'S DAY LOOK LIKE TO YOU?

THE Q UE E N O F DI SCO

Q.

IN 2017 YOU MADE A RETURN TO MUSIC WITH THE INDEPENDENT RELEASE OF YOUR SINGLES HOLDING ON AND GALAXY , AND YOUR FIRST EVER AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL TOUR PERFORMING WITH NINETIES UK POP LEGENDS, TAKE THAT.

Disco is always with me, and always will be. It never left my side. I took a break from releasing music when I took on the new role of ‘motherhood’ – this is something so special to me, that I wanted to give it all my attention. Now Ethan is settled in school and I feel like I know what I am doing being a mum, I decided to get back in the music scene. I love how it has evolved and, as a self-proclaimed geek, I embrace the digital age of music whole heartedly.

Q.

SELLING SEVEN MILLION RECORDS WORLDWIDE YOU ARE UNDISPUTEDLY THE QUEEN OF DISCO. WHAT IS IT ABOUT THIS GENRE THAT APPEALS TO YOU? I have a saying with a friend, that if the music is amazing, it is 'rub your ass up against the speaker good', which we have done so many times at huge musical events around the globe for years. I have spent many years, days, hours encounter with cool, as a totally ‘uncool’ pop artist, was the remix of my single, Baby Love by Steve Silk Hurley. My A&R manager in London, Adrian Sykes, had organised this remix, and it was a complete gamechanger for me musically, FOREVER.

Q.

YOU’RE A HUGE STAR IN AUSTRALIA AND EQUALLY IN THE UK AND EUROPE. WHAT DO YOU THINK HAS CONTRIBUTED TO YOUR GLOBAL SUCCESS AND WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR YOUNG MUSICIANS HOPING FOR A LONG-TERM CAREER IN MUSIC?

56 | Façon | Book 4

Success in any territory comes from being there, making Welsh, so I didn’t have any visa issues staying in London and working longer than the usual two-year travel visa. Home & Away, which was hugely popular in the UK, and I had recorded licensed to MCA records in London - so they invited me to do a quick promotional trip. My advice would be to try to put a great team together and know you can’t do this alone. I have been fortunate to have great management, and we work together as a team, and they have not only been great at career planning, but helping me navigate all the emotional ups and downs of entertainment. My money and this has been incredible. A simple rule he has always said that seems to escape most entertainers, is... don’t spend more than you earn. Sounds simple right? But if you can learn to take out your tax and expenses before spending anything else, you will be in a great Thanks dad.

Q.

HAVING SPENT 22 YEARS ABROAD, WHAT DID YOU MISS MOST ABOUT LIFE IN AUSTRALIA AND NOW LIVING BACK IN MELBOURNE, IS THERE ANYTHING YOU MISS ABOUT LONDON?

super close with my family and missed them so much. London was grey and drizzled with rain all the time. I couldn’t understand why strangers didn’t smile at each other or say hello. I was not used to the ‘big city’ mentality.

The Brits are so polite, so they don’t start conversations, unless they know you; and also it was a time where lots between UK and Ireland, so everyone was just very wary and keeping to themselves. I had not encountered any kind of terrorism before, so it was a real shock to me. It took me seven years to really feel like I was part of London. By then I had friends that I could catch up with, and we could have conversations that would start with “remember when we did this”. To have shared experiences that were now part of our history, made me feel like I was part of this city.

"I HAVE SPENT MANY YEARS, DAYS, HOURS AND MINUTES OBSESSING ABOUT DANCE MUSIC... SUCCESS IN ANY TERRITORY COMES FROM BEING THERE, MAKING INDUSTRY CONTACTS AND WORKING YOUR BUTT OFF."

London, the only way I could communicate with loved ones was on a phone call from my hotel room. Just to speak with my family would cost hundreds of dollars. I was paying $3 for each pound with the exchange rate at the time, so I was haemorrhaging money just to get my FaceTime and send pictures and videos on WhatsApp that it is a breeze. I missed Aussie sunshine, and all the smells and sounds of Melbourne (my hometown) I can smell the gum trees and hear the native birds - and I love it so much. In Australia I miss my UK mates. I love hearing their accents and our love of dance music is always a huge topic of conversation. I love seeing the London black cabs and red double decker buses. Christmas time there is incredible. I always walk through the streets in the centre of town, where the street decorations are stunning. The dark winter days are a perfect backdrop for all the sparkle.

THE CHAM P I O N

He is a man who needs little introduction, yet his life and work after retiring from the world of professional swimming is just as accomplished as his prowess in the pool. Ian Thorpe is undisputedly the greatest swimmer this country has seen and yet while his swimming achievements are well documented, the second chapter Since retiring prematurely from the sport at the young age of 24, Ian has used his huge public persona to forge a most successful career as a brand ambassador, spokesperson, commentator for Channel Seven, budding fashion designer and as a philanthropist.

A TESTAMENT TO IAN’S CHARACTER, HE IS A MUCH SOUGHT-AFTER BRAND AMBASSADOR AND HAS HAD A SUCCESSFUL RELATIONSHIP REPRESENTING GLOBAL SPORTS APPAREL BRAND ADIDAS FOR THE PAST 17 YEARS. He also believes in inspiring future generations of up-and-coming stars and is a mentor to some notable young swimmers, in particular Kyle Chalmers, who won the 100m Men’s Freestyle at the Rio Games. “To be a true champion, you need to inspire those champions who will come after you,” he says.

Invictus Games alongside Prince Harry. He is also a patron for the charity ReachOut Australia. Most recently Ian was the face of a national campaign in support of same-sex marriage, which ultimately saw him celebrating alongside the majority of the nation when Australia voted yes to marriage equality for all. Along with Ian’s huge charitable commitments, he also has an adept eye for fashion and has a long-standing relationship with the brand Giorgio Armani. He has previously released his own jewellery and underwear line and is a stylish addition to A-list events across the nation. A testament to Ian’s character, he is a much soughtafter brand ambassador and has had a successful relationship representing global sports apparel brand Adidas for the past 17 years. Recently, he has also signed on as an ambassador for Specsavers, combining his love of fashion and philanthropy in order to raise awareness of glaucoma. While it may seem like Ian’s achievements are all notably serious, there is also a humorous side to the people’s champion. In 2016 Ian featured in two that saw him launching Thorpedo’s Pool Cleaning and secondly encouraging spectators to #FanupAUS during the Rio Olympics. The latter winning AdNews Best Olympic Ad with 88 per cent of votes.

Out of the pool, Ian has been notably recognised for his contribution to swimming, awarded an OAM for his services to sport and named Young Australian of the Year in 2000.

“TO BE A TRUE CHAMPION, YOU NEED TO INSPIRE THOSE CHAMPIONS WHO WILL COME AFTER YOU.”

In 2012 he received a Human Rights medal for his charity work with indigenous children and he has also received Honorary Doctorates from the University of Western Sydney and Macquarie University. Ian is currently an Ambassador for AIME and the 2018

For the better part of 20 years, Ian Thorpe has captivated the nation and he remains as much a household name today, as he was as a young man proudly representing his country at the Olympic games.

THE TRAI L B L AZE R

Q.

IN 1972 YOU LAUNCHED AUSTRALIAN WOMEN’S MAGAZINE CLEO AS IT'S FOUNDING EDITOR. DID YOU HAVE ANY IDEA AT THE TIME HOW GROUNDBREAKING THE PUBLICATION WAS TO BECOME AND WHAT AN IMPACT IT WOULD HAVE ON AUSTRALIAN CULTURE, HISTORY AND THE CHANGING ROLE OF WOMEN IN SOCIETY AND BUSINESS? No, not really. I think we knew we were doing something exciting but I don’t think we really realised how impactful it would be. It’s only when you look back that you think, hang on a moment, maybe those things we were doing were pretty special. And when you do look back, you can see the magazine was like a breath of fresh air in very conservative Australia of those times. We supported women’s right to work, to have ambition and also to marry and have children. We wrote about a number of taboo subjects surrounding female sexuality that were really never discussed at home, let alone in print. We wrote about contraception, sex toys and lesbianism, including lesbian motherhood. We wrote about homosexuality and explored

to do this. When Cleo was launched there were no female politicians in the House of Representatives in Canberra. There was really very little we didn’t examine and explore, and write about. So, we broke a lot of new ground.

Q.

WHAT ISSUES WERE MOST SIGNIFICANT FOR THE THINKING WOMAN OF THE ’70S?

There was such ignorance in Australia among women – and men – about women’s bodies, about sex, about orgasms, about health generally. Most doctors didn't discuss such things with their female patients. They were important issues but the major issue I think was our right to work, to admit to having ambition and that it was okay working with having a husband and a family; you could

62 | Façon | Book 4

oyster. There was nothing much we couldn't do. The ’70s into being, as did equal pay. There were many important changes that happened for women during that period. It was such an exciting time to be a woman and part of the evolution.

Q.

ON A LIGHTER NOTE, CLEO BROUGHT THE FIRST CENTREFOLD TO AUSTRALIAN WOMEN’S MAGAZINES. WHO WAS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE CENTREFOLD AND WHY? actor. He will always be my most memorable and my

men would put up a lot of bravado when I'd meet them at a party and ask if they would like to pose for Cleo. They would laugh and say oh yeah, I’d like to be the centrefold, ha ha ha, and I'd say, right, what’s your phone number so we can organise everything and they’d run a mile. We were getting a bit desperate until we thought of Jack. When he agreed to pose we were overjoyed. He later told me that Pre centrefold he was always cast in action roles - a soldier, was cast in romantic lead roles. I've been a huge Jack fan ever since. The centrefold came at an interesting time in Australia - for instance nudity on stage was forbidden and plays that didn't observe this ruling were shut down.

Q.

SIR FRANK PACKER FAMOUSLY CALLED YOU TO WISH YOU GOOD LUCK BEFORE THE FIRST ISSUE OF CLEO, ADDING THAT HE THOUGHT YOU’D NEED IT.

He sent me that message in a telegram from Hong Kong, it was hardly an encouraging message from the boss.

Q.

CLEO SOLD OUT ACROSS THE NATION, SO IT TURNS OUT YOU NEEDN’T HAVE WORRIED, BUT DID YOU FEAR FAILURE, DO YOU STILL FEAR FAILURE AND IF SO, HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THOSE NEGATIVE FEELINGS?

I don’t fear failure. Of course I was nervous before we launched Cleo. After all I was only 30 and I clearly still had much to learn and I didn’t assume for one minute that the magazine was going to be a runaway success. I hoped it would be successful, I thought the timing was right; you do get a gut feel in this business for what’s happening out there in the marketplace plus the fact that you make it your business to know as much as possible about your readers who are your target market. Sure I had some sleepless nights however I don’t think you can let fear of failure stop you from having a go. I think fear of failure might inspire people to try even harder. If you let the fear of failure stop you from going after your dreams you're short changing yourself. It's so much better to have tried to rock the boat than never to have tried at all.

Q.

YOU’VE BEEN DESCRIBED AS A GREAT SUPPORTER OF WOMEN AND SOMEONE WHO UPLIFTS AND PROMOTES THOSE AROUND YOU. DO YOU THINK WE AS WOMEN DO ENOUGH TO SUPPORT EACH OTHER? I think it’s improved a lot and I’m pleased about that. There have always been women leaders who have supported other women however there have been other women who were not supportive. Having had to battle long and hard to get to a senior position some of them battle like I did." That attitude has slowly changed and among younger women today there seems to be much more awareness of the need for the women to encourage each other. Women are more supportive these days and there are many women who, like me, are now in mentoring roles, helping younger women, trying to share a bit of wisdom and knowledge, and to encourage them not only to look where the opportunities are but to take them.

Q.

HOSTING YOUR OWN TALK SHOW WAS A CAREER GOAL THAT YOU’VE ADMITTED YOU THOUGHT MIGHT HAVE PASSED YOU BY UNTIL YOU TOOK A CALL OFFERING YOU THE JOB OF CO-HOST ON STUDIO 10. YOU’VE ACHIEVED SO MUCH IN YOUR CAREER. ARE THERE ANY OTHER UNTICKED CAREER BOXES? Doors open when you least expect them. Well that’s

of hosting Studio 10 was right out of the blue. I just couldn't when it didn't eventuate I accepted that not everything you want happens. I told myself okay it's not part of the master plan, it’s not what fate has in store for me, so I'll go do other things and I did exactly that. I've enjoyed the many jobs I've been fortunate to have and the opportunities they've given me. And I’ve learned that if you wait long enough you can achieve your goals such as hosting a TV show. Studio 10 keeps me busy but I also want to write a few more books and I have a feeling that there are a few more doors for me to open in the future. I haven’t a clue where they might take me, I just have a sense there is more for me to do. So I’ll just wait for the next door to open and then I’ll have a peek inside and decide whether I’ll go through it.

Q.

AS AN ADVOCATE FOR GOOD MANNERS IN THE WORKFORCE, WHAT ARE THREE THINGS WE SHOULD ALL PRACTICE ON A DAILY BASIS? to everybody, thank you for anybody who does something for you, somebody who opens a door, somebody who does a good deed, somebody who does a good piece of work. You know there’s a lot of bosses who never say thank you and the words ‘thank you’ are very important words. Being respectful, is probably better than courteous – respecting your work colleagues, respecting your elders and respecting younger people, you know? So, always treat people with respect. And be kind to one another. You know, sometimes it’s nice to do something kind for someone. It’s nice to help someone, and just keeping an eye out for someone who isn’t joining in on the workplace as others do, you know? Some people are shy, some people just don't quite know how to do it. Be considerate and think, if I were that person how would I like someone to treat me? So, think about that other person who may not

THE B E AUTY INNOVATOR

Q.

YOU OPENED YOUR FIRST STORE ON OXFORD STREET, SYDNEY, IN 1995 AND TODAY YOU ARE STOCKED IN MOST MAJOR DEPARTMENT STORES, WITH 85 NAPOLEON PERDIS STORES ACROSS AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND. WHAT DO YOU ATTRIBUTE TO YOUR PHENOMENAL SUCCESS? I have always been true to myself. It really is a roller coaster of successes and challenges, but I have managed I take risks and really focus on going beyond the trends. and when I am creating new products I strive to create the best products imaginable with innovative ingredients and the latest technology that make my products stand out.

Q.

YOU’VE SAID PREVIOUSLY THAT YOUR MOTHER WAS A GREAT INSPIRATION TO YOU AS A YOUNG MAN WHEN YOU FIRST DEVELOPED AN INTEREST IN COSMETICS. WHAT TRAITS OF HERS DO YOU MOST ADMIRE? It still amazes me, like so many migrants, that my mum arrived in this country with very little and did not speak English but still managed to forge a life for herself with my dad. She always loved going out to socialise and was happy and vibrant, I really admire her positive outlook. No matter how hard she worked, she always found the time to dress up, pop on some makeup and make herself look and feel the best she possibly could before she went out.

Q.

IN AN INDUSTRY THAT PLACES A GREAT DEAL OF EMPHASIS ON EXTERNAL BEAUTY, WHAT DO YOU DEFINE AS BEAUTIFUL? I think what makes someone beautiful can vary from an infectious laugh, kind spirit, killer brows or even the love a mother shares for her children. There is so much beauty and diversity in the world and everyone has their own style, which we should all celebrate.

Then I met my beautiful wife Soula-Marie who became my original muse and of course my four amazing daughters. They keep me on my toes and are always telling me what's cool and more importantly female colleagues so understanding women has just come naturally.

Q.

AS A FATHER TO FOUR DAUGHTERS, HOW DO YOU HOPE TO EMPOWER YOUNG WOMEN THROUGH YOUR WORK? I am and have always been a huge supporter of female empowerment. The inspiration for many of my ranges are strong female role models like Amelia Earhart for my popular Auto Pilot Priming collection and Greek goddesses for my Devine Goddess Lipstick collection. As a father of four daughters I believe it's so important daughter Lianna is also really passionate about strong women, standing up for what's right and anti-bullying, which makes me a very proud Dad.

Q.

LIANNA HAS ALSO LAUNCHED HER OWN MAKEUP RANGE, TOTAL BAE. WHAT WORDS OF ADVICE HAVE YOU GIVEN LIANA ABOUT THE INDUSTRY? As she has seen for herself, there is a lot of hard work that goes into making any product a success. From planning, product development to choosing the packaging, it really is a long process but worth it. Like anything Lianna does, my wife and I teach her to work hard, study hard and follow your dreams. Ignore the haters and focus on positivity.

Q.

WHAT DOES 2018 HOLD FOR NAPOLEON PERDIS THE MAN AND NAPOLEON PERDIS THE BRAND?

2018 for me is a focus on going back to basics. The brand will be all about women being in control and knowing her worth. Basic can be strong and cool. I am also excited to see my daughters excel with their modelling and presenting skills and following their own passions. Lots of great things to look forward to with some potential

THE E N TRE P RE N E UR

Q.

YOU STARTED SAMANTHA WILLS SELLING PIECES AT THE BONDI MARKETS BEFORE OFFICIALLY LAUNCHING THE BRAND AT AUSTRALIAN FASHION WEEK IN 2004. YOU ARE NOW STOCKED INTERNATIONALLY AND ARE INDISPUTABLY THE MOST SUCCESSFUL ACCESSORIES BRAND TO HAIL FROM AUSTRALIAN SHORES. WHAT DO YOU THINK ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT ENTREPRENEURIAL ATTRIBUTES FOR GROWING A BUSINESS FROM SCRATCH AND LASTING THE TEST OF TIME? I am an incredibly impatient person; as I get older, I am out, I had no concept of the importance of it. My partner journey: ‘Brands are not built over one or two years. The best brands in the world, the ones that have proved staying power are built over 20+ years.’ So patience and perspective are two attributes that have to work in unison. I also have consciously surrounded myself with people who are brilliant at all things that I am terrible at. At some point (I suggest early on) you have to surrender your ego, and identify and admit what you are not good at. Until you do that, you will be the main road block to your potential. I think the third thing would be to fail often – in this digital age we live in, we are in an environment that is very easy to test things in. If you are not failing often, you are probably not pushing the boundaries enough.

Q.

WE'RE THERE TIMES WHEN YOU FELT LIKE THROWING IN THE TOWEL AND IF SO, WHAT KEPT YOU GOING? ARE THERE STILL TIMES WHEN THAT LITTLE SEED OF DOUBT CREEPS IN? As a creative entrepreneur, you always feel a bit fraudulent – especially when you turned your passion into a career – you always feel like someone is going to knock on the door one day, and tell you the exposé has been discovered, and you have to go and work a 9 to 5 corporate job (which to a creative is the equivalent of selling a vital organ). I hope in my social media

70 | Façon | Book 4

communication, and especially that of the Samantha Wills Foundation, that 16 years in on this journey, I am showing a transparency to the hurdles and frustrations that come with EVERY start-up. My mission with this is I want anyone who is in start-up mode, that they might see a lot of ‘success stories’ – but to not compare themselves to an realities. It’s the equivalent of comparing your chapter 1 to someone’s chapter 20.

Q.

LOOKING BACK ON YOUR CAREER TO DATE, WHAT DO YOU THINK ARE THE THREE BIGGEST MILESTONES YOU CAN CONTRIBUTE TO YOUR SUCCESS? This is always a hard question to answer. It’s hard to answer, because there are things that may have been milestones in contributing to the success and growth of operating infrastructure. On a brand level, two major milestones for us have been: 1. To have Eva Mendes wear the Bohemian Bardot Ring – which we instantly took on board to capitalise on the momentum of this placement – and it changed the course of our brand, and as such, our business. The Bohemian Bardot became an unplanned brand signature. Eva wore the original ring in 2008, and the style has now been designed in more than 300 colourways, and has stayed atop of our weekly best sellers lists for almost 10 years.

2. The New York Times article of being named a ‘Break Out Star’ was pretty surreal and brought with it a lot of retailer attention in the USA, and also added a global stamp of media approval to the brand.

Q.

WORK HARD, PLAY HARD IS A LITTLE CLICHÉ NOW BUT IS IT A SENTIMENT YOU HOLD? HOW DO YOU JUGGLE WORK, LIFE AND PLAY? I used to abide by that – but then I realised playing hard usually left me with a multi-day hangover to recover from, so I’ve dialled it back to ‘Work hard, play-hard-until9.30pm-then-go-to-bed’.

The freedom to run your own diary/schedule I think is one of the greatest perks about being an entrepreneur. For so long, I think (especially in start up/soloprenuer phase) we try to chase this work-life balance by aiming to forcibly separate the two – but I think that causes more stress. I try to fuse the two so closely together. Utilising technology so you can be available if you need to be to your team, even if that means on vacation. Extending work trips a few extra days to explore a new city. If you are a founder (especially a creative founder), you probably started the business because it was something you loved, so chances could be that your now ‘work’ was once your ‘hobby’, so there will be times where you want to invest more into it, and there will needs more investment.

Q.

FROM SAMANTHA WILLS OFFICIAL, YOU LAUNCHED THE SAMANTHA WILLS FOUNDATION. IT HAS BEEN DESCRIBED ONLINE AS A VILLAGE OF SUPPORT, INSPIRATION AND ENCOURAGEMENT. IS THIS WHAT YOU HAD IN MIND WHEN YOU LAUNCHED IN 2016? WHAT DO YOU HOPE PEOPLE TAKE FROM IT? I am beyond grateful for the incredible online community that I am lucky enough to engage with, being able to reach hundreds of thousands of women through social media on a daily basis. is digital media, I am also growing increasingly aware of the responsibility that comes with the impact of social media. I started the SAMANTHA WILLS Foundation as I wanted to create a platform that was accessible to young entrepreneurs, which would hopefully make them feel less isolated in their journey and experiences. It's so easy to that, while still celebrating wins, also put a spotlight on the realities of start-up business: the anxiety, the isolation, the hurdles, the claustrophobia of throwing everything you have at a risk, with no guarantee of reward. It is hard, and it can be very challenging, not only professionally, but personally. The Samantha Wills Foundation is a place for me to write and share what I have learnt so far, and also share is a platform, and a community for our followers to ask questions, be inspired and connect, but most powerfully, share their journeys – the successes and the struggles. I hope that readers not only appreciate the vulnerabilities shared on the platform, but also bring some to the table themselves – it is my true belief that is how true empowerment comes, from sharing our hardships and vulnerabilities. Everyone is going through the same shit – to celebrate each others' wins, but also share our hurdles.

72 | Façon | Book 4

My hope of us all doing so, is to lift the veil a little on the 'highlight reel' of social media, and the glamourised/curated portrayals of 'overnight success stories'.

Q.

SOCIAL MEDIA HAS REVOLUTIONISED THE WAY BRANDS SPEAK TO THEIR AUDIENCE. HOW HAS SAMANTHA WILLS ADOPTED THIS INTO ITS BUSINESS MODEL AND DO YOU THINK THIS TREND WILL CONTINUE INTO THE FUTURE? We don’t take to the approach to speak TO her, but speak WITH her. Women don’t want to be sold to, they want to be part of the conversation. We invest in our audience, and those who are gracious enough to talk with us and interact I think you will see brands start to invest much more in personalisation, from the way a website behaves for each individual user, the technology is getting more intelligent. the experience personalised, in a very saturated, digital market.

Q.

HOW DO YOU THINK AUSTRALIANS ARE PERCEIVED IN THE BIG APPLE? HAS THERE BEEN A SHIFT IN ATTITUDE TOWARDS US ANTIPODEANS IN THE TIME YOU’VE BEEN THERE? I thought I was going to be a rarity there, but there is There are a lot of Australian creatives in NYC, and being in fashion, I am often told how creative Australians are seen by the rest of the world. Aussie are very loved; every American I have ever met has said how much they just love Australians, and then they share a story about someone ‘You know, Dave, right? Dave, from Sydney?’ Of those Americans, the majority of them have never been to Australia – so I truly think they think we know every single

Q.

WHAT DOES 2018 HOLD FOR THE SAMANTHA WILLS THE WOMAN, AND SAMANTHA WILLS THE BRAND? The brand is moving into its new phase of being a best practice online retailer. We have re-launched a brand new site that allows us to operate much more intelligently. It’s a big change going from a wholesale-based business model to now a retail-based business model – we have recruited are excited to make a big impact as we move forward. I personally have just been accepted into writing college, in New York City. I am planning to write a book, and hope to throw myself into that process. ith a natural ability to connect with her followers. Chloe Morello is without doubt Australia’s most celebrated beauty blogger. Combining beauty and brains – with a whole lot of personality – this hard-working professional has managed to create a life that many aspire to, travelling the world and picking up friends for life wherever she goes. Here are her top beauty tips and tricks.

What was the best piece of beauty advice passed down to you from your mother? I don’t think it came from her giving beauty advice but from a concern for my health: she always taught us to wear sunscreen!

What is your definition of beauty and when do you feel most beautiful? in myself when I eat well and take care of myself, stick to my skincare regimen and work out regularly. When I do all these of my tasks, and my skin is clear and glowing.

What is your favourite beauty trend at the moment? I love the creamy, dewy skin! Less contour and more strobing – it’s so fresh for summer.

What is a beauty trend you wish didn’t happen? I saw a lot of unique coloured lipsticks coming out last year: to add to your collection, although I’m happy the classic red lip is back. I may still use the black and greys for my tutorials for something fun, however!

What is your best-kept beauty secret? James Read Facial Tanner! I love to go bare skinned on my face to help keep it clear of congestion – since I am applying and removing makeup so often – and using a fake tan on my face gives it a glow and helps to create the appearance of a more even skin tone without having to apply foundation.

Three products you couldn’t live without? My Face Halo’s to remove my makeup, Dr Spiller Skincare regime (their cream cleanser, toner and day/night cream), and maybe James Read facial tanner. The base is the most important part of your makeup, so all the products I’ve listed are to do with skin maintenance.

boost their engagement. This can turn to around to bite you in the butt if you begin working with brands. I would advise against it and instead, focus on your content and creating what you love to share with your audience.

Top three tips to growing your platform? 1. Utilise tools like vidIQ, social blade and iconosquare to study your analytics and learn when is the best time to post, what your audience respond best to, and track your progress. 2. Spread word of your blog by being an active member of the community, comment on similar pages’ posts, have a Twitter, Instagram, Facebook page and YouTube channel and be very active across all of those. 3. Interact with your followers! I adore my followers and love to read and respond to their comments – it’s my favourite part of it all. Not only does it form a close what kinds of posts people are enjoying. Also, I’ve made so many friends from all over the world – some of them are coming to my wedding, from all over the world! For example, I once had a meet up in Brussels, Belgium, we went for dinner and drinks, and some of those girls I’m still in touch with and even stayed with one of them the following year, and we had a little reunion with many of the others who I had stayed in touch with. I have made friends for life, all over the world.

You are a most-sought after ambassador for brands, how do you decide who you’ll partner with?

How can we keep our skin looking fresh and healthy this party season? Drinking loads of water, I keep one of those water bottles with the sippy straws in them on me at all honestly, I am constantly sipping on water all day! I also believe regular facials help; you don’t really need to go to an expensive salon, you can buy mud masks at the chemist too. But I like to get herbal facial peels at a salon every two months. Invest in a good skin care system too, I recommend buying a system from the same brand, from the same range, so you can be sure that the products are designed to be used together. Sometimes the ingredients in our products can be quite harsh and can even react badly with other ingredients, so using a single line can ensure you won’t be, in fact, damaging your skin. Having a facial to diagnose your skin and prescribe a skin care regime can be a huge help. That’s what I did and how I ended up using Dr Spiller for the past three years.

It’s extremely easy to decide who to partner with. If I like the product/brand, I may say yes. If I don’t, it’s an easy no. Sometimes I do like the product but don’t like what the brand is asking of me, so I say no. I have to admit that

was way bigger than normal, but couldn’t accept because the brand had wanted me to say certain talking points. Even though I liked the product, and I regularly use it, I don’t want to be scripted. My YouTube channel is my main job, so I make my base income because YouTube places ads that go next to my videos or before my videos play. Therefore, it would be counterproductive to annoy my audience by taking on brand deals that could make them distrust me and not want to subscribe to me.

Tina Yong commenced her blog just four years ago and now travels the world immersing herself in culture and collaborating with international brands such as Sephora, Mecca, Myer, L’Oreal Paris, Lancôme and more. On top Tina has also recently launched her own false eyelash brand, Petite Cosmetics.

What is your favourite current beauty trend? My favourite beauty trend at the moment would have to be fuller thicker eyebrows. I think they really help shape the face and can make people look more youthful.

What is your best-kept beauty secret? lately have been using a lip sleeping mask before bed. My favourite one is the Laneige Berry Lip Sleeping Mask. It is enriched with vitamin C and antioxidants and locks

in the moisture really well. I would highly recommend this to anyone with chapped lips.

What is your definition of beauty? inside as well as outside and being comfortable in your own skin.

What do you predict will be trending this season? I think you will see more bolder and vibrant colours this season. There are lots of looks that you would traditionally only see on the fashion runways but are now being incorporated into everyday makeup routines. I feel like more people are becoming comfortable of expressing themselves.

What is your go-to party look? I love playing up my eyes so I have always opted for loads of mascara paired with a peachy nude lip. If I’m feeling like a little bit extra I’ll incorporate a bit of glitter under my lower lash line. Book 4

ax May is a visionary of unlimited talent when it comes to the art of makeup.

As one of Australia’s leading makeup artists, Max has worked with A-list celebrities, including Roxy Jacenko, Elle Ferguson and Elyse Taylor, as well as Australia’s leading fashion publications. Following in the footsteps of makeup legends such as Kevyn Aucoin, Max isn’t afraid to take risks, pushing the boundaries between art and beauty. Max has become instantly recognisable within the industry, continuing to build his empire and follow his dream to empower women by making them feel beautiful.

What advice would you give readers if they wanted to get into beauty blogging? Do it because you love beauty, do it because you love to write and produce content to inspire and educate those who choose to follow you.

What is your definition of beauty? Being comfortable in one’s own skin.

What do you predict will be trending this season?

What was the best beauty advice passed down to you from your mother?

Pinks, reds, oranges and greens when it comes to colours. Liquid to matte lip colours continue to thrive, only now with new and improved texture and wear.

Less is more.

Three products you can’t live without and why?

In terms of style, who do you draw your inspiration from and why?

Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler, Armani Luminous Silk Foundation and the new Urban Decay Heat Eyeshadow Palette.

My personal style is a mix of classic and sportswear. I like double denim, double pleat-style Armani-style trousers and tracksuits and trainers. My makeup style is about skin! I use skin-tone colours and shape them to the face. I guess you would say there is a sexiness to my style. My objective is to make my clients feel beautiful and empowered!

Who do you idolise in the beauty industry and why?

What is your beauty philosophy? Less is more.

What made you want to become a beauty blogger? First and foremost I’m a makeup artist. It’s funny, I don’t really consider myself to be a blogger, rather an artist who chooses to share my knowledge and it’s that reason that got me into writing about my art.

How did you grow your empire? of makeup and always will be. I admire artists like Charlotte Tilbury and Pat McGrath, not only for phenomenal artistry, but turning themselves into a brand!

What is your favourite beauty trend at the moment? Pink! I don’t know if it’s a trend per se but it’s what I’m loving and using a lot of. Eyeshadow, blush, lipsticks... you name it, I’m using it – and in all sorts of shades, depths and textures. It’s one of those colours that sometimes can be a little unexpected, particularly around the eyes, but in the right shade can really enhance your skin tone and make your eyes really pop!

A lot of hard work. Not being afraid of doing something the others.

What are your best beauty tips for the summer holidays? Sunscreen. I know it’s an old one and one we hear all the time but the sun is the biggest ager of skin. One you cannot turn back. Find a lip colour that stands out. Light, dark, bright, whatever it is, choose a colour that gives you an edge.

ASK AN EXPERT

DR NICHOLAS MONCRIEFF MBBS (Hons), BSC (Med), FRACS (Plast Surg) Cosmetic Plastic Surgeon is passionate about making women look and feel great. He is one of only a handful of Plastic Surgeons across Australia

Plastic Surgery, with his wife Amber in 2009. He has performed more than 20,000 surgeries in Newcastle.

Has your body changed after children or weight loss and no amount of exercise or diet can change it ? women in the past decade, may be the answer. A tummy tuck is a plastic surgery procedure that is designed to reduce a protruding abdomen through a full re-draping of the abdominal skin as well as tightening of the muscles of the entire abdominal wall.

Common questions:

Q How much does it cost?

From $12,500 total out of pocket cost including surgical fee, anaesthetic, fully accredited Newcastle hospital and after care.

What is the recovery like? a supportive garment for six weeks and it is common to have bruising and swelling for a month or longer for larger procedures.

pain and incontinence. Reduction of skin rashes and increased ability to exercise is also reported by many patients.

AUGMENTATION

Have your breasts changed over time and after children ? Perhaps they just never developed how you might have wished ?

Will I still be able to breast feed? In many cases, yes.

REDUCTION

Are your large breasts causing you embarrassment, breathing problems, neck pain and back pain ? During breast reduction plastic surgery, fat, glandular tissue, and skin are removed from the breasts and the smaller breast is sculpted to give a natural, lifted shape.

Common questions:

Q

How much does it cost? From $10,500 total out of pocket cost including surgical fee, anesthetic, fully accredited hospital and after care.

How long is the recovery? for six weeks. Bruising and swelling is normal for at least two weeks.

Is this the same as a lift? rebate for a lift alone, so the costs are from $15,000. A lift can also be combined with a breast implant.

No day or night look is complete this season without an array of sizzling accessories. Bags, sunglasses, scarves and jewellery are key to polishing your summer ensemble. Bright hues and touches of gold and silver will have you basking in tropical style. Wide brim hats offer shade and a sense of drama, while rounder frames are popular in sunglasses. Bags can vary from a soft material that you take down to the beach, to a more structured accessory designed for shopping or lunch. Jewellery calls for fine necklaces, wide set cuffs and statement earrings. Accessories can make or break a look, so be sure to experiment with your pieces before heading down to your cabana. IWC
