60 YEARS OF MINI. FOREVER UNEXPECTED. AT KLOSTER MINI GARAGE. Everyone has a little bit of unexpected. A spirit that lurks beneath the surface. Behind appearances. Alec Issigonis had it. He was already in his 50s when he threw out the design rule book to create a car in an oil crisis. John Cooper had it. He saw the potential of that car to revolutionise auto racing. And every MINI driver, past and present, has it. For that, we thank them. For 60 years, unexpected has been the DNA of the MINI brand. And MINI’s timeless sense of fun, individualism and creativity will fuel unexpected for years to come. Most things get boring with age. But not MINI. We’re forever unexpected. So, if you’re ready for something unexpected, book a test drive today at Kloster MINI Garage. KLOSTER MINI GARAGE Corner of Tudor Street & Railway Street, Newcastle West, 2303. This book is for you, luxe lovers of Newcastle and the Hunter
Welcome to the first issue of the new look Façon, The Newcastle Style Issue. As the fashion and creative scene continues to grow in the region and tourism expands, this free publication offers locals and visitors alike an exclusive look at the latest fashion, beauty and luxe experiences to be found in the Newcastle and Hunter region. My decision to offer Façon as a free source of enjoyment comes from my continued dedication to my readers and to my advertisers, who have supported me from day one. Reaching as many people as possible and putting your brand in front of key potential shoppers is my absolute commitment to all and I have locked in some strong distribution partners to ensure this happens. I was particularly thrilled to partner with Newcastle Airport and to be the on-board entertainment on Fly Pelican flights. With tens of thousands of passengers utilising their services to locations across the country, this has really projected Façon into the stratosphere. Along with four quarterly magazines throughout the year, we also have some amazing runway events in the pipeline and are thrilled to once again partner with Chic and Westfield in our search for Newcastle’s next top model. Be sure to check out our 2018 winner, Chiara Voigt, in our boho beach cover shoot with international model and Face of Façon ambassador, Annalise McLachlan. We’ve also added some interesting new editorial features to the book, which will continue in each issue, so if you know someone with an extraordinary home or wardrobe, or if your business offers a unique luxe experience, please reach out to me. We’d love to feature you in our pages. This book is for you, luxe lovers of Newcastle and the Hunter.

he moment you find yourself in the midst of throwing it all away is often the moment dreams are made. Unafraid to face what is just around the corner, it is these words from her father that have been particularly poignant to international model, Annalise McLachlan. While some may consider her career one of good fortune, Annalise is far from flippant when it comes to her success. Entering the modelling industry at the age of 10, she has worked hard to establish her career and says her first big break didn’t really come until she was signed at the age of 16 with one of Australia’s leading agencies, Chic Management, which has also guided the careers of top models such as Miranda Kerr, Alyssa Sutherland, Abbey Lee Kershaw and Samantha Harris. “When I first started working with Chic they helped me rebrand my personal image and things really took off for me,” Annalise says.
favourite labels, Spell & the Gypsy, who designed a campaign based on her unique style of dressing and love of music festivals. Annalise’s career has taken her to more than 13 countries, including Africa, the United States, United Kingdom, Japan and Sweden. On a glance, her Instagram account is full of breathtaking images shot in remote places across the globe and it is hard to not fall a little bit in love with the life of this wandering earth-child as she traverses the planet. From roughing it in campsites set against the burnt orange sands of the Sahara Desert, to shooting a Mad-Max style campaign in El Paso Texas, life as a model affords Annalise with adventures one can only dream of.
“I started working full-time as a model and had jobs booked for a year straight. It was everything I’d been dreaming and waiting for.”
“I’ve seen so many amazing places and met people from all walks of life. It is a very special part of my job and something I will never take for granted,” she says.
Now at the age of 21, Annalise has worked editorially with some of the country’s most reputable fashion magazines, along with shooting campaigns for the likes of Sportsgirl, Jeans West and Cotton On. She is also muse for one of her
It is also a life that Annalise says can at times be lonely and full of self-doubt. It is during these times that she gathers strength from her father’s words and her own self-confessed headstrong, career-driven nature.

“I’m a very confident woman, in a humble way, but I have my moments. It’s not easy, especially when I am without my friends and family and have too much time with my thoughts. I have my insecurities, as every woman does, and there is a lot of competition out there. It’s hard to not compare yourself with other girls, especially when they are landing jobs you really wanted. I think you need a strong support system and a whole lot of patience,” Annalise says, acknowledging the love and encouragement her parents, Melissa and Guy McLachlan, and partner, Darcy Owens, have given her over the years. From driving Annalise to Sydney for castings to chaperoning her on international shoots – including a three-month stint in Japan at the age of 14 – Annalise says her family’s support has been a huge part of her career. “I don’t think I’d be where I am and have achieved what I have at such a young age without my family, especially my mum and dad,” she says. “Darcy has also been so supportive and helped me through some tough moments in the job. He just wants my dreams to come true and I’m lucky to have him.”
percent would enjoy the international success seen by Annalise and on that hard-pathed journey to the top, Kathy likens it to that of the film industry. “Actors have to go to many, many castings before they get their breakout role. It tests their ability to perform and builds their toughness and resilience. Models are also put through the rigour. While some may become an instant success, the ma jority of girls must learn to deal with rejection and be willing to work extremely hard,” she says. “It takes time and patience to develop a skill in front of the camera and to learn to work with large creative teams. A young model must take a disciplinary approach and learn the skills first.” For Kathy, a top model must have a look that is unique and makes her stand out in the crowd. “I think the top girls are a little bit different, they’re born to model and kind of fall into it,” Kathy says. “They often have other interests and aren’t pinning all their hopes on becoming a huge success, but they also work incredibly hard and have a very strong work ethic.”
Face of Façon winner, Chiara Voigt was a natural standout when she entered the Chic x Façon regional Kathy Ward, director of Chic Management, has been in the industry model competition in 2018. Tall and willowy with pixie-like features, she for more than 25 years and has is a natural in front of the camera launched the careers of some of the and despite confessing to being country’s most successful exports, somewhat shy, she exudes confidence many of whom have appeared in and stature on the runway. Although campaigns for some of the world’s leading fashion houses – Chanel, D&G, Chiara’s career is still in its infancy, she Gucci and Dior, to name a few. Kathy is is excited about the future and what comes next. also quick to point out that while the modelling industry looks glamourous “I’d never really considered from afar, it is not for the faintmodelling until I saw the Face of Façon hearted. Of the hundreds of girls who competition and had never been on enter the prestigious doors of Chic’s a (photo) shoot or done any runway Sydney-based agency, only 3 to 5 work,” Chiara says.

Façon | The Newcastle Style Issue
“I’m not sure exactly what type of model I want to be, but I do get a rush out of runway work, especially after opening the Spring Fashion Runway event for Façon last year.” For those girls who do make it to the very top, it is a lucrative career, with Kathy saying models can earn anywhere between $5,000 to $80,000 per day depending on the campaign. The job also comes with additional perks such as invitations to sought-after parties, travel, endorsement deals and an in-depth look into the fashion industry as a whole, which is something of particular interest to Annalise, who is looking at starting her own fashion label. “I love being around creative, likeminded people and learning all aspects of the job and how a campaign all comes together,” Annalise says. “If I think about life after modelling, Darcy and I have always had a dream to start our own clothing label. We both love to express ourselves through fashion and I envisage starting a really unique, high-end brand that represents us both.” Against a soft-lit, pastel sunrise as Annalise and Chiara shoot the cover story for Façon, The Newcastle Style Issue, it is clear their futures look bright. Although they appear fragile in contrast to the horses they lead along the coastline, it is obvious in speaking to them they possess an inner strength and quiet confidence that one senses will see them achieve their dreams. This year Annalise is speaking to agencies in New York about representation and is hoping to be cast for the Victoria’s Secret runway and editorial campaign. It’s a life, like most, complete with highs and lows, and for girls looking to enter the industry, Annalise offers these words of advice: always be you and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Be confident. Be wise. Never do something that makes you feel uncomfortable. Be careful who you surround yourself with and choose a good agent. Be patient and embrace every moment. All things change. Be kind. Be humble. Remember your time will come. The 2019 Face of Façon model search is now open. Visit faconaustralia.com to enter.

KRISTY BROWN, BUSINESS OWNER 57 |
Façon | The Newcastle Style Issue
KRISTY BROWN BUSINESS OWNER
With one of the most coveted closets in Newcastle – even Carrie Bradshaw would be envious – we couldn’t help but want to spend an afternoon admiring pretty pieces with Kristy Brown. For those who haven’t met the denim-clad designer mum, Kristy is owner of boutique retail store, Lillie’s at the Junction. As a purveyor of all things luxe, Kristy is a firm believer that Newcastle deserves its own fashion mecca and has made it her personal crusade to bring the best pieces from around the globe to our harbour city. On the afternoon of our shoot with Kristy she warmly welcomes us into her Merewether home and we’re instantly in love with the opulent space she has created for her young family: partner Chad and two sons, Duke, 8, and Bronx, 6. An entertainer’s dream, her home has magnificent 180 degree views across the city, sweeping from the harbour to the sea. One can easily imagine spending long afternoons laughing with friends and family in her exquisite lounge room, complete with its own bar setting. Before getting acquainted with the finer points of Kristy’s wardrobe, we spent some time quizzing Kristy on her favourite pieces and personal style. Thanks for having us, Kristy. We love your home and you’ve got a great personal style. How would you describe your aesthetic? My fashion aesthetic cannot be easil y described! It swings from off duty no makeup, gym gear mornings (PE Nation, of course) to an explosion of clashing prints, floaty lace dresses, heavily embellished jackets and crystal earrings. I'm a massive fan of denim jeans (J Brand is my fave), a vintage graphic tee, statement sunglasses with sneakers or snakeskin ankle boots. I don't follow the rules and I wear what makes me feel good on the day. I'm a 'more is more and less is a bore' kinda girl. Fads come and go; what is one trend you would love to see stick around or resurrect? Fashion is on a cycle that often reinvents itself years later with a twist. I would rather buy investment pieces t h a t c a n b e w o r n y e a r a f te r y e a r rather th an fast fashion th at doesn't last or you get sick of. A beautifull y cut qua lity blazer in black, navy or a neutral colour can be worn season after season and is worth every cent. If you could pick one statement piece for winter, what would it be? If I could onl y choose one statement piece for winter... (I could NEVE R onl y choose one!) it would be an oversized furry coat to throw over EVERYTHING! I love Trelise Cooper and H Brand for winter coats and jackets: they look fab over jeans or a dress and last for seasons.
What is your most extravagant purchase and was it for a special occasion? My most extravagant purchase would be my Sugar Skull Hublot watch bought last minute in Las Vegas after the McGregor/ Mayweather fight. When I take the other half shopping, anything can happen! S o m et i m e s f a s h i o n c a n b e a l i tt l e sentimental, what is your most cherished item? My most cherished items are the ones chosen for me by my partner Chad. He has amazing taste and often surprises me with gifts. He bought me a navy Balmain blazer, which I adore, a pair of LV heels and most recently, a Gucci Perspex watch. Luckily he knows what makes me tick and he gets that fashion is my thing. I also cherish my custom-designed art deco engagement ring that was a complete surprise. I wear it every day and still think it's the most beautiful thing I've ever owned. If your shoes could say something, what would they say? I love a strong shoe game! My mum jokes that many centipedes must live at my house due to the sheer volume of shoes. My shoes sa y luxe and sporty: I love colour, I love textures like velvet and snakeskin. Sometimes I buy a shoe I love in a couple of colours. Just like Carrie Bradsh aw, 'I like my money where I can see it...in my closet'. CLAUDIA LIEBENBERG

EXPERIENCE CLAUDIA LIEBENBERG
Nestled among the gum trees with sweeping views across the bay and birds in full song, one can’t help but relax upon entering the oasis lobby of Port Stephen’s newest hot spot. Just a short drive north of Newcastle our winter retreat is far enough from home to bid farewell to reality but close enough to disappear for a short while and not be missed. Our midweek getaway is Bannisters Port Stephens, a gem of a hideaway for those looking for the ultimate in luxe accommodation and culinary delights. Bannisters is a name synonymous with coastal chic and relaxed seafood dining, made popular by its South Coast namesake. Bannisters Port Stephens is a relative newcomer to the Northern NSW Coast but one that is already living up to its formidable reputation. Since opening in September 2018, the hotel has played host to some fabulously fashionable parties and has become the place to go for Novocastrians looking to unwind and dine in laidback luxury. The hotel has a distinctly cool, ’70’s vibe to it and upon entering the lobby one feels as though they could very well be anywhere in the world. It’s exotic but without pretence and the infinity pool is beyond inviting, regardless of the weather. One could easily image sipping cocktails while gazing out to sea or wrapped in chunky knits during the winter months with a glass of red and a good book. The soft ocean breeze brings with it a feeling of peacefulness and the yachts bobbing on the ocean below are mesmerising.

Begin your night away with a bottle of champagne at The Terrace overlooking the sea before a night of fine dining at Rick Stein’s famous seafood restaurant. The restaurant continues with the ’70’s glam interiors and the huge bar is spectacular. As far as seafood goes, one can’t go wrong with anything on the menu, with all produce locally sourced. True lovers of freshly caught seafood and a great wine list will be in foodie-heaven and the desserts are equally to die for. After dinner, order yourself a little nightcap and snuggle into bed for an evening of Netflix and a well-earned rest before waking to the sound of kookaburras calling in the new day. Before you go, make sure you take a sunrise stroll through the gardens and down to the beach. There’s a lovely jetty to walk along, greeting the early-riser fishermen before you head back for a hearty breakfast to kick start your day and return to reality. Getting there: Bannisters Port Stephens is a 30-minute drive from Williamtown Airport or 50 minutes from Newcastle. 101 |
