60 YEARS OF MINI. FOREVER UNEXPECTED. AT KLOSTER MINI GARAGE. Everyone has a little bit of unexpected. A spirit that lurks beneath the surface. Behind appearances. Alec Issigonis had it. He was already in his 50s when he threw out the design rule book to create a car in an oil crisis. John Cooper had it. He saw the potential of that car to revolutionise auto racing. And every MINI driver, past and present, has it. For that, we thank them. For 60 years, unexpected has been the DNA of the MINI brand. And MINI’s timeless sense of fun, individualism and creativity will fuel unexpected for years to come. Most things get boring with age. But not MINI. We’re forever unexpected. So, if you’re ready for something unexpected, book a test drive today at Kloster MINI Garage. KLOSTER MINI GARAGE Corner of Tudor Street & Railway Street, Newcastle West, 2303. Speaking of breathtaking, I was so thrilled to work with the incredible Samantha Harris again for this issue’s cover shoot. I first met Sam more than 10 years ago as a shy teenager and I am so impressed by the gracious, confident and kind woman she is today. Samantha has been so generous with her time, sharing her story with us and letting us in on important matters of her heart. She’ll be back in Newcastle as a guest judge at the Australis Face of Façon runway finale on October 12 at Westfield Kotara, so come by and say hello. Before I sign off for another issue, don’t forget to subscribe to the Façon VIP Social Club to have your magazine delivered to your door and to receive an exclusive ticket to our Summer Runway, which sold out in three minutes flat last year and promises to be even more spectacular this year! I hope to see you there.

By model standards, Samantha Harris could be fearful of approaching the big 3-0. By any other standard, she’s only just finding her stride. As the famed model begins her 29th lap around the sun, we spoke to her about the highs and lows of life as a modern Australian woman, her fears and insecurities and her hopes for the future. These are her words as spoken to Claudia Liebenberg. Her reflections on the past, present and future.
Sometimes to look forward, you need to look back and see how far you’ve come. As a painfully shy young woman, on the brink of big things, I never in my wildest dreams believed that my life would turn out this way. My big break came through the Girlfriend Model Search competition at the age of 13 years and from then onwards, I wa s th r u s t i n to a n a d ul t wor l d th at took me years to understand. I grew up in Tweed Heads in a loving family with a strong role model of a mother who wanted the best for my brothers and I. We didn’t h ave a lot, but we h ad enough, and we made do with wh at we had. In retrospect, I had a charmed childhood. I spent my days on the beach with my three older brothers and weekends pippying with my mum. I was always interested in modelling and my mother would enter me in beauty pageants, often sewing my outfits herself. We were a close-knit f a m i l y a n d I k n ow m y mum did everything she could to give us the best possibl e upbringing. I don’t think life was easy for her and she had a traumatic childhood, taken from her famil y as part of the stol en generation. It is onl y in recent years that she has reconnected with her family, travelling to Ke m p s e y to m e et h er a un t i e s and the elders from her community. I think this is one of the reasons our immediate famil y is so closeknit. Famil y is everything to me and being awa y from them was one of my biggest ch all enges as a young model. When I was 14 years old I was
plucked from relative obscurity by one of the world’s most famous fashion photographers, Patrick Demarchelier, to form part of his Iconic Faces campaign for American Glamour in New York. I missed my famil y and I struggled to feel comfortable in my own skin. While I can laugh about it now, my crippling shyness almost rendered me unable to mutter a simpl e hello. It’s gotten better with time. People often ask me how I overcame my fears, and really, like so many things in life, it simpl y took time. Over the years I found my groove. I became more aware of who I was and l ess aware of what other peopl e thought of me. I grew up. I became more confident because I h ad those years of experience under my belt and I was a b l e t o s t o p s we a t i n g the small stuff so much. I knew whatever life threw at me, I could h andl e it. At the beginning of my career I just wanted to fit in, I wanted to look like everyone else. As I got older I realised how ridiculous th at was: I am who I am and I can’t ch ange th at. Ironicall y, my individuality is wh at made me stand out, it gave me the life I know today. I no longer want to look like everyone else – I want to be me. With confidence I think comes h appiness and whil e I was never unh appy, I certainl y think I’m in a better place today than I was 10 years ago. I still have my moments where I judge myself harshly and am critical of myself, but for the most part, I like who I am and every day I try to be the best version of that person.
I became more aware of who I was & less aware of what other people thought of me.

I surround myself with good people – my family, my agent and my husband, Luke. Luke has stood by me for more than 11 years and he is without doubt my best friend, my biggest supporter, my past, present and tomorrow. I can be sill y around Luke, we have a lot of fun together. I don’t believe in rel ying on other people to validate how you feel about yourself but h aving his love makes me love myself more. It’s impossibl e to predict the future but I hope to one day have my own famil y and allow my children to grow up slowl y. I want them to h ave a simpl e childhood, similar to mine, full of love and adventures. I am in a good place with my career and in the future, I’d like to continue to build my personal brand and hopefull y build a business empire of my own. I look up to people like Elle MacPherson and Miranda Kerr who continue to model but are also business women in their own right. I don’t think I’m just a pretty face in a magazine anymore and I don’t want that to be all that defines me. I love makeup and I’d like to develop an affordable brand that feels and looks luxurious; we all deserve to feel special. If I think about what I want my legacy to be, it is without doubt a mentor to young girls and I take my rol e as an Aus tra lis GRLBOSS mentor very seriousl y. I used to wear their products as a young girl attending modelling competitions and I am honoured that they picked me as an ambassador for their brand. As an indigenous woman I am proud of my culture, yet I’m saddened to see how many people from the Aboriginal community still struggle. My mum and I are looking forward to spending time in remote closed-off communities later this year, listening to my peopl e and hearing their stories. Sometimes I think peopl e just want to know they have a voice, and someone is interested in hearing what they have to say. I hope to inspire young girls and show them that the sky is the limit. I believe in the saying ‘you can’t be what you can’t see’ and so I want them to look at me and see their future. Looking back, I know I have lived an extraordinary life and I am thankful for it and excited about my future. I am who I am and I wouldn’t change a thing. Samantha Harris will be a guest judge at the Australis Face of Façon runway finale at Westfield Kotara on October 12, 2019.

EXPERIENCE LUNCH WITH A VIEW

Façon Luxe LUNCH WITH A VIEW As the light danced off the ocean and we ascended above our sparkling Harbour City I felt a wave of appreciation for this beautiful life. Circling the city before following the contours of the coastline south, dolphins played among surfers and our decadent da y out began. For anyone looking for a truly magical experience, a coastal tour by private helicopter followed by a five-course degustation lunch certainly delights all the senses. Our 45-minute helicopter ride was exhilarating from ascend to descent, with our pilot, Tom, pointing out key landmarks along the way, including whales migrating south, the beautiful Swansea channel, and to mark our arrival, the spectacular Norah Head Lighthouse. Our destination is Bells at Killcare, perched high on the Central Coast's lush Bouddi Peninsula. A favourite among jet-setters and a bucket-list destination in itself, food lovers will rejoice at the simpl e, seasonal Italian-s tyl e fare cooked to perfection. The el egant restaurant is set within the Manor house and commands impressive views over the divine grounds, which includes its own estate kitchen garden and orchid.

LAUREN STEEL CO-FOUNDER & DIRECTOR
When Newcastle’s newest style icon moved in next door to the Façon studio we couldn’t wait to get acquainted. As it turns out, Lauren Steel is a girl after our own heart. Coming from almost a decade in the publishing industry Lauren has worked for some of the country’s most coveted lifestyle mastheads and before following her love to the coastal calls of Newcastle, she was the online editor of Vogue Living. Today, Lauren has combined her creativity, love of beautiful objects and flair for discovering the unusual and unique into her passion-project, House of Lita, which she co-owns with Brigita Millard. Upon entering Lauren’s beautifully curated and breezy warehouse for our Luxe Profile shoot, one feels as though one is stepping into the glossy pages of a magazine. With a love of simplicity, modern lines, pared-back neutrals and pops of colour, it is difficult to pigeonhole Lauren’s interior style, other than that of implicit good taste and authenticity.
How would you describe your style and wh at are you influenced by? I would describe my style as classic, minimal and partial to a pop of colour. I’m influenced by great interior design books and magazines and other beautifully styled spaces and interiors that I come across in said books, social media and the ones I am lucky enough to see and admire in real life for work.
What are your top three objects of desire for your living room? My Huski Studios ‘The Uni’ chair, my Vicki Lee artwork and my Moroccan cactus silk cushions.
Please can you describe the house of your dreams? The house of my dreams is white, filled with beautifully designed furniture, h as an impressive coll ection of art adorning the walls, streams an abundance of natural light, is mostly neutral with hints of pastel hues and brass accents and has a pink-peach coloured door. Oh, and a beach view and a backyard pool would be nice, too.
Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue… What are your most cherished items and why? Something old is my tan Baxter boots, which were my mum’s, and I not onl y c h e r i s h t h e m b u t a l s o we a r t h e m constantl y. Something borrowed is my husband Mitch’s grandmother’s light pink Glomesh, which h as accompanied to many special occasions since my motherin-law and father-in-law gave it to me. Something blue would have to be our new house, which is currently blue (inside and out!) that we’re just about to embark a renovation on.
Back to reality, what is your favourite piece of furniture or art and what drew you to it? My favourite piece of art is my Vicki Lee work from her collection titled Night Rain. I worked with Vicki a few years ago now and when she explained the meaning of it to me — the visual of it illustrates the feeling inside you when you’re bursting with love — I knew right then I had to own it and it is one of my best home purchases to date. 62 |

Final words, who’s your style icon and why? I adore Edwina Forest’s (founder and creative director of Aje) style — it’s the perfect fusion of elegant, playful and timeless. CLAUDIA LIEBENBERG

luxe ESCAPE MUDGEE : WORLD-CLASS FESTIVALS, CULINARY DELIGHTS, BOUTIQUE ACCOMODATION AND WINERIES TO EXPLORE
The Mudgee Region is a destination on everyone’s bucket list right now, and rightly so. Known primarily for its boutique wine and sophisticated country charm with about 40 family owned wineries, a distillery and brewery, it is nestled in the hills and surrounded by quaint country towns, rich with heritage and a variety of established quality visitor experiences. A stunning mix of charm and sophistication, Mudgee offers a plethora of experiences year around, with a number of not-to-be missed festivals from September to November. The Mudgee Wine and Food Festival kicks off on September 7, running throughout the month, and the famed Huntington Estate Music Festival will celebrate its 30th and final year of world-class chamber music in November.
Fly Pelican offers flights to Mudgee six days a week for your convenience. Visit flypelican.com.au
where to stay? Sleep among the vines at Rosby Estate or book an Airbnb in the heart of town. There is certainly no shortage of quaint cottages and boutique accommodation options for those looking for an escape from reality. For five-star luxury, consider historical Evanslea House. Set among 1.8 hectares (4.5 acres) of pristine gardens, it offers the perfect backdrop for a romantic stay or a girls’ weekend away. Just minutes from the heart of Mudgee, there is an abundance of trendy retail and dining options on your doorstep, or for those who’d rather stay lost in their own wonderland, picnic hampers are available in-house.

Culinary options Roll up your sleeves and experience the joy of cooking, with The Little Cooking School’s threecourse casual cooking class. Using the best regional produce sourced from the Mudgee region, this is a true paddock-to-plate experience that doubles as a lesson for you to share with your loved ones upon your return home. Mudgee is also home to a number of NSW’s finest restaurants, including the hatted Zin House, and for a more casual experience, visit Elton’s open-aired courtyard and soak up the sun over a selection of craft beers and local wines.
Wineries to visit The birthplace of Australian chardonnay, grapes were first grown in the Mudgee region in 1858 and since then the region has continued to produce award-winning wines. For those interested in an organic experience, be sure to visit Lowe Wines, a certified organic facility specialising in small-batch winemaking using innovative techniques. Logan Wines is also a must for wine enthusiasts, with the Logan Tasting Room offering spectacular wines across the vineyards. For those who simply can’t decide between the 40-plus wineries on offer, Country Escape Tours offers a variety of tour options and experiences – including an adventurous tour by horseback.
what to do? With so many options, you may need to book multiple trips to Mudgee to experience everything it has to offer. However, for those planning a truly unique visit, we can’t go past the Huntington Estate Music Festival. Set in the Estate’s magical barrel halls, the bare walls offer a brilliant acoustic to enjoy some of the world’s finest classical performers in a unique and awe-inspiring setting. The festival, designed for abandonment to sensory pleasures, also offers lazy afternoons and long evenings set under the stars to linger over a glass of wine and discuss music and the meaning of life with friends old and new.

Embellished in gold, this look will make the goddesses jealous. Create this look using Napoleon Perdis Twilight Shimmer, Gold Leaf from the eyeline to the brow. As the sun begins to fade, the glow will remain. Dazzle into the night. Create this look with Stila Cream Shimmer in Kitten Karma across the lid. Tickle your inner playfulness with pops of pink. To create this glossy look we used Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Popping Pink Lip Tar on the eyelids and the lashes to create a fun spring look, perfect for day or night. We prepped the skin with MBL Beauty Skin Sequence to create a fresh dewy skin and used Napoleon Perdis Flushing Blush on the cheeks. In the past 18 years of my hairdressing career I’ve tried and tested many different products – some have been underwhelming while others have been transformative. Here are my top five products I can’t live without. First on my list is No.6 Bond Smoother by Olaplex. This leave-in product is ideal for those with coloured hair or who use heat styling tools regularly. Think of No. 6 as a mix between a styling product and a hair treatment. It works to eliminate frizz while also hydrating and protecting your hair, so it’s perfect as a pre-styling treatment for blow drying or straightening your hair. Evo Sea Salty Dog Spray is the best salt spray I’ve used and unlike a lot of others, it doesn’t go tacky and clumpy in the hair. You can spray a substantial amount on your hair and still be able to get your brush through it. It is perfect to put in before blow drying and to help your curls party all night long. If you would like more of a shine, I recommend Wella Perfect Setting Spray. This product has changed the game for the better when it comes to fashion styling, and like Evo’s Salty Dog Spray, it doesn’t weigh the hair down. It gives intense hair control and long-lasting shape. I highly recommend using this product before your blow dry and when you are planning to heat style your hair, whether straight or wavy. If you are a regular user of dry shampoo, you can’t go past Oribe Dry Texturising Spray. It is essential for those with fine hair as it creates the finest workable textures and body. Spray in dry hair after styling from the roots out and fluff it through with your fingers. It will give you the volume you have always dreamed of. For those with shorter hair, I think Evo Casual Act is the best moulding whip on the market. It has a light, flexible hold that washes out easily and doesn’t leave your hands feeling waxy every time you touch your hair. All you need is an amount about the size of a five to 10-cent piece and emulsify it by rubbing between your palms. Massage it through your hair right to the roots. The great thing about Casual Act is that you can refresh your style throughout the day.
