PUBLISHING FAÇON CREATIVE SPECIAL THANKS A huge thank you to the beautiful Samantha Wills for gracing the cover of our inaugural digital issue. Thank you to The City of Newcastle and to our Lord Mayor Cr. Nuatali Nelmes for your continued support of the fashion and creative industry in Newcastle and for your contribution to this exciting issue. As always, and at the centre of everything we do, thank you to our readers and our advertisers. And to all of our families and friends during this unprecedented time in history, thank you for supporting us.

I am so excited to share this new medium of Façon with you!

I have to be honest with you, I wasn’t sure if I would be writing another editor’s letter for Façon. At first, when the World Health Organization announced the pandemic, my immediate thought was that it couldn’t touch Australia, let alone my family or Façon. Watching the world shut down systematically was something I never thought I’d see.

Digital was somewhere I was always a little resistant to. But I had to think of our loyal advertisers and sponsors and how we could respond to what was unfolding around us and support them as businesses during this unprecedented time in our history, as well as band us all together so we could ALL survive these tough times. And this was how this edition came to be. This is our first digital edition.

I walked into 2020, a new year, a new decade, with such optimism to grow, achieve more, reach more people and expand what started as a humble hunger to make world-class fashion images in the regional area of Newcastle. The goal was to share them with the country and put Newcastle on the map as a place to be taken seriously creatively and as a contributor to the fashion and publishing industry in Australia. A place where talented fashion designers, local fashion boutiques and inspiring creatives were thriving, where a new population was making a sea change to the city and was seeking metropolitan thrills in their newly settled, slower-paced life. And so Façon magazine was born.

The “Back to Basics” issue. My first instinct was to call my friend Samantha Wills, Façon’s first beautiful cover girl, and ask her if she would again do me the honour of gracing our first digital cover. I was thrilled when she again agreed.

As I DO write this editor’s letter, such an exciting new opportunity for Façon magazine is emerging. As they say, out of every gloom time there is a boom time, and for me, this is the new format we are embarking on. I adore print: I find nothing more exciting than going to the newsagent and snapping up three or four of my favourite titles, only to bring them home and wait for the perfect moment to open their pages, either with a glass of my favourite wine or with a latte in hand, depending on the time of day! This decision began as a response to the COVID situation the world found itself in. As a free print magazine our main distribution points were severely affected by the closures and restrictions that were upon us.

Samantha and I go back a long way, shooting one of her first jewellery campaigns in my backyard in Bronte, Sydney when I first moved back from abroad. We were both finding our feet professionally, her as an aspiring international jewellery designer-to-be, myself as an eager fashion editor and creative director. Samantha’s cover story in this issue talks to us all during this time, which has affected us all in different ways, and how we are all going back to our origins and essence. So too is Façon magazine, still keeping its essence and philosophy of celebrating local, with national and international fashion, beauty and lifestyle. We will continue to spread the word on our beautiful and talented regional area of Newcastle and I am so excited to share this new medium of Façon with you! Hope you enjoy this our first ever digital winter issue of Façon!

M

y new email opening line has become: How are you are doing in this surreal time? Not just because it seems more apt for this time than the generically polite, how are you? But surreal, because it is the best word I can summon up to encapsulate our current normal; it is good and it is bad, it is loud and it is quiet. It is the arguments and personal hoarding we saw in the loo paper aisle. It is also people withdrawing their government stimulus and sliding it anonymousl y under the front doors of local businesses with a few written words along the lines of, 'I don’t need this money, and I wanted you to have it. I hope your doors reopen soon.' ‘We’re all in the same boat’ is a phrase I have been hearing a lot these past few weeks and while I understand the intentions of it, it is in and of itself somewhat of a privileged statement to make. Because the truth is we are not all in the same boat. Some of us are in boats that have savings onboard while others are in boats that rely on that week’s paycheck to put food on the table. A paycheck that for many no longer exists. Some of us are in seemingly crowed boats and have had to become instant schoolteachers and some of us are in really, really isolated boats and have had to sit entirely on our own for a few months. If the boat we find ourselves in is in Australian waters, on a health level we are in one of the luckiest boats, but it’s a very different boat to those experiencing this pandemic in many parts around the world. So, we’re not all in the same boat at all. We’re all weathering the same storm, but we are most definitely not all in the same boat. Origins and our return to them is something else I h ave observed over these past two months. Stay home was the clear directive. In the very early weeks before border closures, many of us travell ed home to our country of origin – back to our motherland, doing so not knowing when the impending closing borders would be reopened again. Some of us may have travelled back to our childhood home or to where our immediate family now resides. 24 |

To pass the time we have revisited hobbies we haven’t picked up in years, going back to wh at it was like b e fore wor k co m m u te s , s o c i a l e n g a g e m e n t s and stacked weekends consumed our life making us feel we were always running from one thing to the next. This very magazine you are reading has gone back to its origins. Businesses – especially small businesses – have had to go back to their origins, back to the core of what they do and in doing so look at new ways they can expand on that. To buy time till we have more details or see the full extent of damage, to tread the storm waters until the economy starts to move again… and ultimately, until that time, simply to survive. Good brands will survive this. Business is what we do, and our brand is the very essence of why we do it. People are loyal to brands, not business. It’s hard for people to get emotionally involved with a P&L, but you better believe they connect to a brand that is in turn loyal to them. A brand that shares the same world view they do, a brand that right now is not trying to sell them something they don’t need, but rather acknowledges that they are in the trenches with them. Consumers will remember how brands made them feel in this time, and that feeling will be acknowledged with where they choose to spend their money. I had a business for 15 years. It was an accessories brand I started at the age of 21. For the final two of those 15 years, there was an unsettling within me that was uneasy at best, deafening at worse. I was unable to admit that my heart was no longer in the company, I was crippled by thought of change rather than optimistic about the thought of possibility. So instead, I remained in a holding pattern of a lack of passion and ample amount of fear. Change: it scares more people than it excites, and it’s one of the few things we can be certain of in life. In times of uncertainty we jump to worst-case scenario and our catastrophic thinking takes hold. We rarely experience the early motions of change and rejoice in the opportunities it may bring. And then finally, in the June of 2018 I made the decision to close the business. It was the biggest decision I had ever made and was all I had known my entire adult life. As I had (ever so modestly) named the brand after myself, I did not wish to sell my name, so instead of offering the brand to the highest bidder, I instead made the decision with my business partner to announce that we were closing. Our plan was to run the stock down over the following six months and in that time celebrate the brand and its people. In January 2019 we closed the doors on that business for good.

Façon |

27

In addition to not losing control of my name, I made the decision to close instead of sell as it was how I believed it best to honour the legacy of the brand and all it had stood for, for well over a decade. Some called me mad, many called me stupid, most told me I should be doing anything other than what I did…. but in the end it didn’t matter, because there was something in me, an unsettling, that was going to continue on until I addressed it. Something in me longed to work again on my dining table, to go back to being a sole trader and cut out the big commercial requirements and minimum order quantities, not having to worry about teams and logistics and international lead times. And so, after 15 years, that’s what I did. Going back to my origins allowed me to quieten the mind so I could hear what the heart had to say. And it turns out when I was able to dial all that noise down, what I thought I ‘should’ be doing was quite different to what I actually wanted to be doing. Unsettlings come in different forms, some loud and swift, some silent and simmering. The bigger the storm, the bigger our return to origins. The greater our need to re-strategise, rescale, return, maybe reinvent or reroute. And as with anything that forces change upon us, what it doesn’t allow us to do is resist. And I think that’s the commonality of this storm. Good business will survive this, but they won’t be the same as they were, but nothing will be. Some days that excites me greatly, other days it scares the shit out of me. It is a universal law th at in life sh ake-ups and stripdowns happen along the way. It might come as an internal unsettling within us that forces us to shed things in our life and either start the next chapter or start all over again, depending on which way we choose to look at it. Ma ybe it's presented with an external circumstance that feels very unsettling, one that we have no choice but to face as the winds and rains feel like they are whipping around our face, and some days the ability to see where we are heading is easier th an others. We must keep an eye out for other boats, giving what we can spare. Some boats in our community may have a leak in the hull that we can assist with financiall y or manuall y, others may simpl y need a little wind in their sails, which can easil y be tended to with an outreaching of thoughtfulness or a random act of kindness. But what we cannot assume is that everyone’s boat is the same. So, as the clouds start to break and a little light starts to shine through, let us all continue to stand as strong as we can to weather this storm, because that is the thing we are all in together. Emma Brokate

Greater Bank Group Executive - Credit and Operations Tips on money you wish you were told in your 20s.

Your 20s is a time when study is completed, careers are established and as a result, a few more dollars end up in your pocket. While there are plenty of temptations on which to spend this new-found fortune there are a few things you should consider and some financial pitfalls to avoid. Façon recently caught up with Greater Bank Group Executive, Credit and Operations, Emma Brokate, to get her top tips on managing money in your 20s. The key to managing your money wisely is forming positive habits early. Here are a few fundamentals to set you on a prosperous path throughout adulthood. 1. Be aware of your ability to spend. Have a clear understanding of your unavoidable, regular expenses – rent, car repayments, phone bill, insurances – and when they’re due. Once you know exactly what you’re up for, you know what’s left for those “nice to have” purchases.

4. Understand credit reporting. Get a copy of your credit report every 12 months to ensure it’s correct and understand what impacts your credit score. Essentially, missing a repayment today can affect your capacity to borrow in the future.

2. Save some money. It can be just a few dollars a week, but saving is an important habit to get into and you’ll be surprised how much you can stash away. Electronic banking makes it easy to set up a regular automatic transfer or deposit.

5. Educate yourself about buying a property. This may not be on your radar now, but it may be in the future. Apart from your deposit, understand the other expenses you’re up for, such as legal fees and stamp duty.

3. Don’t overdo it on “buy now/pay later”. Keep track of your credit purchases to ensure your spending doesn’t get away from you. Also understand and stick to repayment terms to avoid paying unnecessary fees or charges.

Forming good financial habits costs you nothing but failing to do so can cost you plenty in the long run. If you need more help to put these tips into action, reach out to someone you trust: parents, a financial advisor, or your bank.

* Greater Bank currently serves more than 270,000 customers across NSW and South-East Queensland and was recently named Australia’s most trustworthy bank. This was the finding of Research Platform, Glow, that surveyed 1,250 Australians between 24-28 March 2020. Greater Bank Limited ABN 88 087 651 956. AFSL/Australian Credit Licence No. 237476.

Libby Helinski Owner - Pappa Sven Greater Bank Customer for 5 years

After living in Sweden for a year, I had a dream of returning to Newcastle and opening a Nordic lifestyle store. More than just a retail store, I saw it as a way to share my love of the Nordic way of life here in Newcastle. From this dream, Pappa Sven was born and I opened the doors to my new little shop front in Newcastle West. Business was great and we outgrew our premises pretty quickly. I set my sights on a new property; a beautiful terrace in Cooks Hill. It was the perfect location for the store. Soon after moving in we genuinely felt part of the community. We have regulars who drop in to see what we have on offer, but also just to say hello. It’s a community that has supported us so much and I like to think we are giving back as well. It’s that sense of community that also lead us to Greater Bank. When we approached them to help finance our new Cooks Hill shopfront, they couldn’t have been more supportive. They know it’s not just about providing financial products and services but supporting businesses that make a contribution to the communities in which they operate. Greater Bank also helped with my next venture: a unique Airbnb property in the heart of Cooks Hill – Pappa’s Summer Cabin. We restored the building and decorated it with a selection of my favourite pieces from the shop to create a sense of what it’s like to live in Sweden. It puts a smile on my face to see people from out of town come to stay with us and experience everything our wonderful little community has to offer.

Renae Carey

Director - A Magical Time Children's Centre Greater Bank Customer for 5 years Choosing a daycare centre that meets the needs of your children and family can be a difficult task, and something we struggled with. We had our son’s name on a waiting list but a spot didn’t come up. That’s when I decided to build a centre for mums like me, where children are being well looked after, nurtured and have an amazing day. Critical to the success of our centres over the past 14 years have been the relationships we build with the families. We take the time get to know not just the children we care for but their parents and siblings. By working together with the families our staff can provide the best possible care and support for the children. Relationships are so important. Be it at work, in business or your personal life, you need to develop and maintain good relationships. It’s the same with your bank. A few years ago, we were looking for a better deal and after doing some comparisons, Greater Bank offered us a whole new solution that was better for both our business and home. We soon discovered though that they offered far more. They genuinely cared. From the outset they took a genuine interest in what we do and are always looking out for what’s best for our family and businesses. Today, we have a great relationship with our branch staff. I know that I can pick up the phone and call our manager anytime and they’re always there to help us find a better solution.

We’ve not seen a pandemic of this scale since the 1918 Spanish Flu. Almost overnight, the COVID-19 outbreak upended our dail y lives, isolated the most vulnerable and crippled businesses. In the Hunter Region alone, thousands of workers had their hours reduced, were stood down or lost their jobs altogether. Large swathes of the community, particularl y the elderl y and those who live alone, felt – and continue to feel – the sting of social isolation. e s s e n t i a l o u t i n g s – we a c h i eve d something together. Novocastrians successfull y slowed the spread of coronavirus and flattened the curve, easing pressures on our healthcare s ystem and first responders whilst buying precious time to build capacity to deal with any future outbreaks. For a time, when we were housebound, chalk rainbows lined suburban footpaths a n d te d d y b e a r s a d o r n e d h o m e windows – signs we found silver linings in the everyday, no matter how small. We’ve also showed we’re a resourceful b un c h , h a r n e s s i n g t h e p owe r of technology to sta y connected with friends and famil y and support local businesses, community groups and organisations in innovative wa ys. Many of us have gotten creative with online events (check out the City’s What’s On(line) virtual event calendar for ideas) and made the most of the downtime by upskilling with the City’s expanded online library services. The importance of community cannot be overstated at a time like this. Being able to lean on and support one another when things get tough is integral to our wellbeing and resilience – ensuring th at, whil e this sh ared experience might bend us, it won’t break us. Novocastrians have demonstrated time and time again their ability to adapt and rebuild after a crisis: the 1989 Newcastle Earthquake, 2007 Pasha Bulker storm, and the recent bushfire season, to name a few. After each historical event we have prevailed because we banded together as a community to overcome adversity.

The imp of commu be overs time li

Our people will again play a pivotal role in Newcastle’s rebirth post-COVID-19. M any c h a r i t i e s and n ot - for - p rof i t organisations responded to community need arising from the COVID-19 crisis within a matter of weeks, as was evident in the more than $170,000 City of Newcastle awarded in Rapid Response Grants under its COVID-19 Community and Economic D eve l o p m e n t R e s il i e n ce P a c k a g e . Organisations like OzHarvest, Soul Café, BaptistCare HopeStreet and Awabakal were among the first to apply for funding to give a hand up in the form of emergency food supply and crisis support services. With in-person events cancelled, City of Newcastle’s charity partner, Got Your Back Sista, moved its annual Mother’s Day raffl e online, raising more th an $16,000 to help women and children fleeing domestic violence begin again – requests for which have more than doubled since the outbreak of COVID-19. As the city moves into the recovery phase, I am certain we will see more of this signature Novocastrian spirit flourish as we rall y for a whole-of-community response to rebuild our beautiful harbourside city: it's the Novocastrian way. Your City is right there beside you, investing an historic $100 million in delivering Council’s capital works program as part of our broader range of community support. And, who knows, perhaps this once-ina-generation crisis has given us a new perspective and will breed fresh ideas to reshape the way we do things for the better. While there’s no doubt that COVID-19 has disrupted life in a way we never saw coming, and its impacts will be felt long after the initial emergency has passed, Newcastle will emerge on the other side more resilient than ever. All we have to do is find the light. www.leaninnewy.com.au Lord Mayor City of Newcastle, Nuatali Nelmes

here’s something alluring about being in the presence of Penelope Morgan. She’s in tune with herself and the world and people around her. She’s inquisitive and thoughtful. Perhaps that’s what makes her so good at her craft. She sees the light differently, or she takes time to let it filter through the cracks. As a photographer and writer, Penelope is a storyteller but behind the lens Penelope’s life is a story in itself. She’s travelled the world and called Sydney, Los Angeles and now Newcastle home. She worked as an actress in LA, NYC and London and studied law while working professionally as a model before eventually turning her love of photography into her full-time gig. She’s got a big story to tell and we were honoured when she took us inside her home to show us some of her more personal pieces collected in a life well lived. See more of Penelope’s work @penelopemorganstudio How would you describe your personal style? It’s a mix of op shop finds and high-quality labels that are made to last a lifetime. I always choose clothes that are easy to wear and comfortable, but I also love a bit of sexy. What or who inspires you creatively? Mother Earth. Nothing we create will ever be as unique. She is the divine creator and she is constantly providing me with inspiration. You just have to stop for a moment and look at the bee attracted to the flower, the butterfl y that flitters past you, the stars in the sky. She is a prolific creator and inspires everything I do. I am also a big reader and love the physical presence of print. I keep a stack of books sitting on my breakfast table. They are all so beautiful to look at and a good way to start the day. What are your most cherished items and why?I have notebooks scattered all around the house. Words and ideas drop into my mind all the time. It's like fishing, there’s a little bite and if you don’t pull it in straight away you miss the catch. If I don’t stop and write the words and thoughts that come into my mind at th at exact time, I miss them. Often these little beginnings of thoughts and ideas turn into something special, so I like to catch as many of them as possible. My piano is also a very cherished item in my life. Music is soothing to the soul and every time I sit at the piano, I remember being a kid. I used to play a lot when I was younger and although I don’t play so much now, I still absolutely love my piano.

Façon Luxe What’s your favourite article of clothing in your wardrobe and what does it mean to you? My flare jeans are forever. They look old and tatty because they are so well worn. I’ve had the booty stitched up a few times now and will wear these until the death. They are Tsubi, but when Tsubi was owned by the boys who lived in my neighbourhood. Before they were famous. I bought them from an op shop in LA about 15 years ago. Best find ever. Wh at is your favourite piece of art or photograph and how does it make you feel? My best friend took this beautiful framed image of the flowers behind the glass. I love the colour palette. Then there’s the photo of my two loves. This sits on the top of the fridge and I never tire of looking at it. How do you like to reset and reconnect? The space in between is rare but it ’s important. It’s where I can connect back to my purpose in this life. My home is my haven and I just love textures. This pillow was a bit of a splurge but I adore it. I prefer to buy quality items that last a lifetime (or close to) than buy cheap pieces that die after a year. That reall y annoys me! Plants also give our home life and they help clean the air. We have lots of them by the windows so we have natural air filters everywhere! This little plant is so cute. Look at its pops of colour coming at you. It’s like a mini fireworks explosion in our living room and I love the ceramic pot. This little cutie pie makes me happy each time I look at. Skin care is a nourishing and important part of my day and I love it, especiall y when it’s made of natural ingredients and smells beautiful. Skin care is selfcare and it’s the time in the day where you can s top and remember who you are! The rush of life drops away as the senses are taken over. I always allow at least 10 minutes of skin care pampering in a day. It’s my time and it’s important. Fads come and go, what is one trend you’d love to see stick around or resurrect? I love that these days there is this mish mash of all decades of clothing. But for me I am very much drawn to the ’70s. I find most of my choices in clothes are inspired by that era. It just suits my personality I think, and the fact that it was all about free love suits me down to my high-waisted flares. 90 |

Façon Luxe What possession transports you to a time when you felt trul y h appy? At one point in my life surfing was everything. I was competitive and had two brothers, so I had to be as good as them! I loved surfing more than anything and I’ll never forget going for an earl y surf before school, the sun rising over the water and dolphins jumping past me. Life couldn’t get any better. I’m still finding it difficult to top that experience. If you could pick one statement piece for winter, what would it be? This would definitely be my wool biker jacket. I’ve had it for 13 years or so. It’s so warm and it’s been with me for over a decade worth of winters and it still looks brand new. It’s made of 100 per cent wool and it just goes with everything. This jacket and I are best mates. We’ve travelled the world together. It’s a classic and I can throw it on over just about everything. I am definitel y a winter lover. The cool weather gives me more choices of clothes to wear. I love boots too and in Australia we reall y only get one month of good boot weather.

A sports bra you can swim in. Swimwear you can train in.

RUN. SWEAT. SWIM. SORTED. Inspired to help women whose boobs and bodies may sometimes hold them back, Amanda and Bec are Co-Founders of the newly launched Australian Made Active Swim and Sports Bra label JOI Active.

Both are busty women, who throughout 20 years of friendship, have shared a love of the water and the frustration that for a woman of a certain bust size there is no sports bra you can swim in or swimming costume you can run in. And so they created JOI – products designed to enable and empower women to get outside and Jump On In to the things they love. The idea was simple – create a High Impact Aquatic Sports Bra and One Piece Swimsuit that would support women in pursuit of physical activity on land, in water (or both), while looking great. Amanda says “We set ourselves a challenge to try as many swimmers, sports bras, crops, tanks and bralettes we could get our boobs in. We

worked out what elements work for an ample bosom and what doesn’t. Then we called in the experts to help us design, sample and make our products”. The pair sourced sustainable compression Lycra from Italy, German engineered fast drying and sweat resistant cups and then pulled all the pieces together to create a product that is now being manufactured just a rock skim away from where they hatched the idea on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. For Bec, this has been a passion project, she says: “JOI is designed for the 14 year old girl struggling with body image, grappling with how to transition from kid to teenager and sitting out of things she’d love to jump into because she’s too self-conscious.

For a woman of a certain bust size there is no sports bra you can swim in or swimming costume you can run in.”

We get it, buying bras and swimwear can be tough, that’s why we designed the High Impact Sports Bra and One Piece to be super flexible as well as supportive” It’s for anyone who has to wear multiple cossies or sports bras under cossies to get that little bit of extra support. It’s for when your body is changing throughout pregnancy and breastfeeding AND importantly it’s for all women at any stage of life who want to freely Jump On In to the activities that make them happier and healthier.”

Amanda loves water, loves to run, loves being outside but has a serious dislike for ill-fitting bras without enough support “We get it… buying bras and swimwear can be tough, that’s why we designed the High Impact Sports Bra and One Piece to be super flexible as well as supportive – wide under bust band holds you up and adjustable back and shoulder straps mean you’ll have a great fit”. JOI’s launch range consists of 6 styles; the High Impact Aquatic Sports Bra, the High Impact One Piece, High Rise Bikini Briefs, High Rise Surf Leggings, Shorty Shorts and Bike Shorts – so whatever your activity, you’re good to run, swim and jump on in.

he pas t few months h ave been a whirlwind for all of us. Rather than dining out with friends and family, we’ve been spending more time at home, with a newfound appreciation for the little things and for the people around us. As social restrictions continue to ease around Australia, many are simpl y looking for any excuse to sit down for a meal they haven’t also prepared. Whether it’s a birthday, anniversary, or just as a treat, no place could be better suited for that special night out than Newcastle’s only hatted restaurant, Subo. Pre-COVID, patrons would flock to Subo, opened by experienced and passionate chefs Beau and Suzie Vincent in 2011, to experience a creative take on fine dining that champions Australian producers by focusing on locality and seasonality. This is reflected throughout their rotating menu all the way down to the wine list, comprised of items from Australia’s best producers of organic, bio-dynamic and minimal intervention wine all the way from the ACT to our own Hunter Vall ey. “Hardworking, creative people have been the key,” Suzie said about Subo’s survival. While the past few months have been witness to the restaurant’s innovative at-home delivery service, Subo At Home, the team is now ready to begin hosting their full table service again. Patrons can look forward to the creative, ever-changing menu the restaurant is known for, complemented by a fresh outlook on the dining experience. We were lucky enough to get an exclusive peek into Subo’s return with the first menu they will serve at their tables from June 26. Begin the evening with prawn tataki with shiro dashi and yuzu, pandan and roast almond. Move on to crispy fried silken tofu with bonito and black soubise, locally sourced brassicas sorrel. Follow this with dry-aged duck breast and caramel stock. The sweetness is highlighted even further with rhubarb and barbequed celeriac. Cassia bark, tonka and lime are next as a light refreshment before finishing the evening with dessert. The white polenta cake soaked in mandarin syrup is accompanied by a black sesame ice cream and grapefruit for a refreshing balance of flavours to complete the service.

If you feel like supporting loca l produce even further, why not try something like the 2018 Vinden Estate ‘Headcase’ Semillon, sourced from the Hunter Valley. Whil e the rotating menu features a range of produce, dietary requirements of a l l k i nd s c an a l s o b e c a tere d to. From dairy free to gluten free, pescatarian to vegetarian, any diet can be catered to with enough notice. Now in its eighth year, the team at Subo is more excited than ever to continue to serve the high-quality, delicious and interesting five-course menus they have become known for. While social restrictions are still in place, Subo will be running two exclusive and intimate seatings each night, with Suzie looking forward to bringing everything back to the way they love to operate: “Tasty food, good service and letting people enjoy themselves.”

…Experience a creative take on fine dining that champions Australian producers by focusing on locality and seasonality.

During the lockdown period, the editorial team corresponded with each of our Faรงon Faces to see what their days in isolation looked like and how they kept busy. Faรงon hopes to create a sense of unity by taking a look back at how others have experienced their time in this snapshot of isolation.

Lily Who are you isolating with? I am isolating with my mum and her partner. We are mostly at home in Newcastle although we often take trips down to our house on the lake to change things up a bit. How are you keeping busy? LOTS of cooking! Baking and yummy dinners! I’ve been keeping active each day with workouts, walks and runs. And my mum and I have spent countless hours doing puzzles and watching movies! What are you grateful for today? I am so grateful that throughout this entire disastrous time all of my friends and family, in Australia and across the world, have stayed safe, happy and healthy. That’s all I wish for at the moment. What do you miss most about life pre-COVID-19? I have really been missing the sense of community that is known to Newcastle and the freedom of everyday life. When life returns to some form of normality, what’s one thing you’ll change for the better? I feel as though this time has been a great eye opener for so many people, it definitely has been for myself. I think this time has taught me not to take so many aspects of life for granted and to enjoy the smaller things more than I have in the past. What changes do you think you’ll see in the modeling industry once this is over? I think it will affect the way the industry operates for a while in relation to fashion shows, where and how shoots, shows and castings can take place and also what fashion is available to buy and sell. As for every industry I do hope the effects don’t persist!

tallas How are you keeping busy?

I’ve been in the middle of a house move, which has been pretty full-on – sorting through heaps of boxes and wiping the dust off some memories. The odd surf and coffee have been keeping me sane though! What are you grateful for today? Being held. The world is pretty chaotic at the moment, and we’re just in such a good position compared to some. I’ve been going through these weird cycles in response to all this COVID uncertainty: freaking out, getting pissed off, and then returning to a somewhat calm normality. My loved ones have been super tolerant of these mood swings. I’m grateful for that. What do you miss most about life pre-COVID-19? The pub. Being able to catch up with mates without feeling guilty about it. When life returns to some form of normality, what’s one thing you’ll change for the better? It’s like this whole quarantine thing has forced a lot of us to slow down all the production, schedules and lists of daily life. It’s funny because I’ve almost been subconsciously trying to fill my free time with more jobs and distractions. It’d be unreal to come out of this with a better ability to just stop and listen – being OK to dwell in stillness. What changes do you think you’ll be seeing in the modelling industry once this is over? Well, I’ve been wearing this one comfy shirt and pair of trackies for about a month now, haha. So maybe more of a focus on sustainable, stylish, multipurpose fashion rather than the whole ‘fast-fashion’ scene we’ve been feeding over the past decade.

Sophia Who are you in isolation with?

I’m self-isolating with my mum right now, and having just the two of us in the house 24/7 has been… interesting! Luckily, we are also in lockdown with our two cats, and I can’t forget our dog, Fritz. How are you keeping busy? Well, I can easily say that by the end of this self-isolation period, my house (and freezer) will be filled with baked goodies! To keep myself physically active, I go on daily walks and runs while listening to some cool tunes. I’ve been keeping my mind pretty active as well. I have been dabbling in my love of fashion and crafts by going through our wardrobes. What are you grateful for today? I think this whole situation has made me realise how lucky we really are to have everything we have in our lives. We live in such an amazing city and country that is not only beautiful and fun to be a part of, but has responded so well to everything that has gone on. When life returns to some form of normality, what’s one thing you’ll change for the better? I have been doing a lot more physical activity since this started, and I’m not relying on going to the gym. There is a beautiful walking track right near my house that I didn’t even know about. I will definitely be keeping up this routine. What changes do you think you’ll see in the modelling industry once this is over? As more and more people are shopping online, I see that the modelling industry will further move to a digital platform in a more formal way. Some agencies are doing a lot more digitally to get their models work during this time. This may be a trend that will continue as the world enters this new ‘normal’.

Jack Who are you in isolation with?

I’m currently at home with my dad, Peter, my step-mum, Sarah and my two dogs, Jock and Teddy. How are you keeping busy? Studying my nutrition course has been taking up a lot of my free time. I’ve also been trying to stay as active as possible, going for daily runs and doing a workout when I can! What are you grateful for today? The sun is out, good music is playing, and my family and friends are healthy. What do you miss most about life pre-COVID-19? I miss being able to see friends the most, sitting down at a café and going to the beach. When life returns to some form of normality, what’s one thing you’ll change for the better? Hopefully I’ll be able to go on my Europe trip as soon as I can, and I’ll definitely be more grateful for the freedom to go out with people. What changes do you think you’ll see in the modelling industry once this is over? I think there will be a more cautious approach to hygiene when working closely with each other.

Zahara Who are you in isolation with?

I am in isolation with my aunty, Victoria. We rent together and are both busy with study and work online. How are you keeping busy? I am studying a Bachelor of Primary Education full time which is online for the foreseeable future. I am also keeping fit by going for runs most days around Newcastle’s beautiful beaches. What are you grateful for today? I am grateful for good health and to be surrounded with my beautiful friends and family. What do you miss most about life pre-COVID-19? I miss giving and receiving hugs! I also really miss holidays, eating in restaurants and going out for drinks. When life returns to some form of normality, what’s one thing you’ll change for the better? I will, and already am, so much more grateful for the little things in life. Giving hugs, visiting family and going out for dinner and drinks will be much more special than ever before. What changes do you think you’ll see in the modelling industry once this is over? Similar to the fashion industry, I believe some parts of the modelling industry will become digital. I am also sure hygiene practices will be carried out more carefully.

Irini Who are you in isolation with?

I am in isolation with my parents. How are you keeping busy? I have been able to focus on my university studies and involvement with a variety of associations. I make sure to allocate time to research and meditate. Additionally, phone calls and video calls with friends and loves one have encouraged me to stay focused and sustain my aspirations. What are you grateful for today? Being able to spend quality time with my family members and being able to stay safe amidst the pandemic. What do you miss most about life pre-COVID-19? The ability to simply walk out without considering its importance. It is also the diminishing fear of assisting someone in public requiring aid. It is the physical connectivity amongst us as a community and the ability to care for others when one is struggling that will need to be restored immediately. When life returns to some form of normality, what’s one thing you’ll change for the better? I have recognised the importance of meditation to sustain a clear mind, which allows me to focus further with my studies and aspiration as well as conduct human connectivity on a variety of levels. The importance of family, care, compassion and love have been reinforced into my daily activities. What changes do you think you’ll see in the modelling business once this is over? The world of modelling is currently sustaining itself by creativity in order to stay positive due to the virus. Upon returning to normality, modelling will be stronger and further interconnected through visionaries’ aspirations whose work ethic has been sustained as such during isolation.

ith beauty businesses and salons still adjusting to restrictions, the team at Façon provides the answer to your beauty woes with the help of Scrubba Body. While we are all getting back on our feet, it’s important to take the time to pamper and indulge when and if possible. With Façon’s curated at-home spa day plan, enjoy the benefits of a luxury pamper day, all while in the comfort of your own home. Start the day off right by brewing a cup of tea. Scrubba Body stocks Mayde Tea, an organic loose-leaf tea with customised flavours that will be sure to set the serene mood (Façon recommends the Green Sencha, Jasmine & Rose tea). While the tea steeps, take the time to clear your space of any clutter. A clear space equates to a clear mind, so take use of the opportunity to tidy up your bathroom and bedroom for optimal relaxation later in the day. Light a candle, such as Scrubba Body’s Sandalwood Natural So y Candl e, to reall y set the ambiance. After indulging with a cup of tea, run a warm bath and add Scrubba Body’s Coconut and Rose Bath Milk for the ultimate unwind. Infused with rose petals and Brazilian white clay, the Bath Milk adds hydration paired with a soft, rose-scented aroma. When in the bath, after cleansing with one of Scrubba Body’s Natural Handmade Soaps, exfoliate any dry and cracked skin with the Coconut and Hibiscus Salt Body Scrub. The scrub’s ingredients include pink Himalayan salt, coconut oil and hibiscus petals which remove dead skin cells while leaving the skin soft and moisturised. Apply a face mask while soaking, such as the Detoxifying Green Clay Face Mask, to draw out impurities and clear the skin of any congestion and oiliness. Try to still yourself during this time by taking a moment to focus on the breath, breathing in through the nose and out through the mouth, to ground oneself and set good intentions for the rest of the day.

Once out of the bath, appl y both a face o il and b o d y o il to l o c k i n th e s k i n ’s hyd ra t i o n . S c r u b b a B o d y ’s Ro s e and Hibiscus Moisturising Oil is the perfect blend of rosehip oil, argan oil and vitamin E to hydrate the skin while also working to treat acne, scarring and fine lines. For the body, apply the Berry and Acai Moisturising Oil while focusing on massaging the skin upwards to promote lifting and tightening of the skin. Don’t forget to pamper the lips by appl ying a hydrating lip balm. Façon recommends the Peppermint Natural Lip Balm for a hydrated yet minty-fresh pout. When dressed in comfy lounge clothes, move to the bedroom and set yourself down with some snacks and your choice of TV shows and movies. The Façon team suggests a mini manicure for the perfect pampering activity to accompany this relaxation time. Equipped with your favourite polish, a nail buffer and oil (Scrubba Body’s selection of oils work perfectly!), get to work in buffing the nails, coating them in polish and finishing off with a thin layer of oil at the cuticles. It’s extra important to take little steps in working on inner and outer health, now more than ever. If you’re in need of a pickme-up, now is the perfect time to bring a little bit of luxury into your own routine. scrubbabody.com.au

What are the health and beauty benefits of taking an internal supplement? Collagen is the most abundant structural protein found in our bodies and our skin. It’s literally the glue that holds us together. It acts as the foundation for our bones, teeth, muscles, skin, and pretty much all other connective tissues. Collagen makes up more than one-third of your total protein and works to firm your skin and strengthen your bones. Taking an internal collagen supplement can boost overall skin health. You can expect to see improvements in all these areas, most noticeably, hair, skin, nails and digestion. Which supplement would you recommend to give our skin an extra boost through the winter months and what are some of the benefits we can expect to see? I would recommend taking our Bioactive Collagen Booster daily. It has your daily allowance of vitamin C derived from our super ORAC berry blend. It also contains other skin supporting ingredients and antioxidants including hyaluronic acid, astaxanthin, resveratrol and shisandra, a known beauty tonic used in the East for thousands of years. Antioxidants work to counteract the effects of the free radicals that our bodies naturally produce and help to boost collagen production. Vitamin C combines with the amino acids – lysine and proline to form the precursor to collagen or “procollagen”. It also protects existing collagen from damage. Without vitamin C, our body is slower in healing wounds and producing collagen. Vitamin C is not naturally synthesised by the body so it must be obtained through our diet. It’s vitally important in the role of neutralising free radicals and is essential for maintaining younger, vibrant skin. Collagen peptides have other benefits as well including strengthening joints, improving sleep and accelerating weight loss. Collagen peptides when used as an ingredient in products have been shown in studies to improve skin barrier function and to help the production of collagen after just eight weeks of ingesting. They indicate a significant increase in collagen density in the dermis where the skin became thicker and the lines were noticeably diminished.

EAUTY Q+A

ith the chilly winter months quickly approaching, we spoke to Mukti, creator of Mukti Organics, about her tips on internal health and beauty and organic, clean living. With a natural love of beauty, Mukti launched her brand in 2000. To this day, she remains a prominent figure in the organic beauty market and a recipient of various beauty accolades such as ‘Best Skincare Brand Australia’. Mukti is an avid follower of clean, healthy living and continues to grow her brand and influence as she works on her first book, Toxic Free Beauty, which she plans to launch in late 2020.

Façon Beauté What advice would you give for those looking to try a collagen booster supplement? I would look at the overall formulation and what it contains. The more skin supporting ingredients, the better. I would also recommend taking before photos and again at eight weeks. Take the supplement daily and look for the improvements in your skin, hair and nails during this time. If you don’t enjoy drinking it in water, I recommend adding it to your morning smoothie. Wh at are your top three recommendations to get started on living a cleaner, more organic life? Walking barefoot in nature on a regular basis to ground, earth and reconnect. Practicing intentional breathing alongside a dail y meditation practice. Eating organic and biodynamic produce and avoiding inflammatory and processed foods especially sugar, soft drinks and hydrogenated fats. Exercise – a variety of movement that includes cardio, strength and mobility. I talk about these and much more in my best-selling holistic beauty guide Truth in Beauty.

When the specialist was ‘stuck’ at home – what happens when a surgeon can’t operate? We talk to Newcastle plastic surgeon Dr Nick Moncrieff about his experience during the COVID-19 situation and his plans for what promises to be his busiest winter and spring now that restrictions have eased. What impact has this had on your practice? I normally operate on about 330 women a year who travel from right across Australia, so the government’s suspension of most elective operating meant a huge disruption to my team and my patients. And with medispa treatments also prohibited, there wasn’t much ‘hand-on’ that we could offer. But the government’s strategy worked to flatten the curve, so it was absolutely the right call. What did you do while home more? I’ll be honest and say it was a challenge as I’ve became hands on with home schooling for our three boys and the closest I was able to be to sharp instruments was helping them with art projects! I really missed the order and visible results of operating. But there were definitely positives too in terms of spending more time with my family and learning new things together. I’m sure a time will come when we look back at this period fondly.. it’s just too soon for that yet. And like most of our team, I invested quite a lot of time doing online learning. It was a great way to meet some of my CPD requirements during a quiet time. And what about time at work? In the final week of March, we made the decision to close the practice, even before the government’s restrictions kicked in because we felt it was the right thing to do. But my team quickly adapted to working from home answering enquiries every day and I was still been in the office one-to-two days a week to see patients from earlier weeks for things like dressing changes. I also started offering video consultations for new patients who want breast or body surgery later in 2020. We were actually surprised how strong the demand was and we now have a significant waiting list of women wanting surgery when we can resume. So going forward, we will still offer video consultations to women who live outside of Newcastle, but I still prefer face-to-face. I guess like many people have found during this experience – real life conversations are a lot more productive! When will you be back to full capacity? Hopefully by the time this article comes out! We have been able to do some procedures to address pain so surgery like breast reductions, but hopefully by June we will be back to also offering tummy tucks, breast augmentation and breast lifts as well.
