What a ride. To be honest, as I write these words I am blown away by what we have achieved!
Finally, summer is upon us and it is with great pleasure that I present to you our second digital issue and more importantly, our 10th issue of Façon. What a journey it has been! Façon began its life as a regional glossy magazine with a lot of ambition and passion, a first of its kind. It hasn’t been easy, especially as I embarked on starting up a high-end fashion magazine upon returning to my hometown of Newcastle after living abroad for many years. I had to create a job for myself because fashion editing jobs were, to say the least, few and far between in Newcastle, and so Façon was born. It was a big move in every way! I am proud to say that Façon has worked with many brands and celebrities, from Australian fashion icons like Toni Maticevski and Akira to international powerhouses like Mercedes-Benz and Dior. Our covers have proudly featured stars such as the beautiful Samantha Harris, the spunky Ricki Lee Coulter, the ever–elegant Kate Ritchie and Newcastle’s own treasure Tegan Martin, to name a few. We have proudly interviewed and featured the gorgeous Dannii Minogue, Cate Blanchet (4am calls to her New York agent was part of the process of landing Ms Blanchett for our pages), the devastatingly handsome Chris Hemsworth and publishing mogul Ita Buttrose, beauty entrepreneur Napoleon Perdis and last but definitely not least, Australian designers such as Carla Zampatti & AJE. Façon has launched modelling careers in its pages and also through its collaboration with national modelling agency Chic. We have flown the flag high for many up-and-coming brands and also showcased historical international luxury brands such as Dior, Bally, Giorgio Armani and Versace. What a ride. To be honest, as I write these words I am blown away by what we have achieved! The title has morphed many times in 10 issues, but here we are today standing loud and proud. Embracing and enhancing all things fashion, beauty and lifestyle both on a regional, national and now with the digital format, international level as well.
It was so great to see that our first digital issue (Winter 2020) was showcasing the talented designers, creatives and lifestyle of Newcastle with the rest of the world. Our readers came from places such as Canada, UK, US, Greece and even Brazil. It’s so exciting for our team to reach the far corners of the planet and unite us all as lovers of all things fashion, beauty and lifestyle. As I sign off on this editor’s letter, I’d like to thank our stunning cover stars for our 10th issue, the lovely and gorgeous Karstan & Maxine and their gorgeous little baby Zuri. Façon had the privilege of featuring them in our second issue (minus baby Zuri of course), many years ago in The Influencers Issue. I just loved how kind and generous they were, coming from Newcastle and having stardom from their appearance on The Block, they both carved their way into an interesting career pathway and celebrity. All these years later they are our cover story. As I bumped into them whilst doing groceries at the local Harris Farm Markets I asked them if they would like to be on the cover of our 10th Issue. Luckily they agreed. The shoot location was on the shores of the lovely Lake Macquarie, which is a natural phenomenon in NSW, Australia and if you don’t know this stunning location you should definitely take time and check it out. At least one positive about COVID is that it has encouraged us to embrace our summer holidays at home and explore all our beautiful country has to offer. I sincerely hope you enjoy our 10th issue of Façon. Thank you for being with us and enjoying what we so enjoy making for you! Xx Lara PS Stay safe.

s we settle down into the beat-up Kombi that has taken Karstan and Maxine around the country, it immediately transports me into their carefree mindset. This is their home. The number plate may read “NO GOOD”, but as the pair fondly recalls favourite memories from the past eight months on the road, it becomes apparent that this old van is anything but. Zuri, now just over one year old, has been with her parents every step of the way, from Cameron Corner to Cape York, and the coupl e’s Insta gram @karstanandmaxine beautifull y documents every destination. “The past 12 months have been the best of our lives… we've just been on a massive adventure, which has completel y changed our lives,” Maxine said about the whirlwind of n e w e x p e r i e n c e s b et we e n b e i n g new parents and their Outback travels. “ I ' ve d i s c overe d m ore a b o u t w h o I a m a n d a s a f a m i l y we ’ ve g row n and b e co m e o n e un i t ,” Ka r s tan s a i d . After travelling through Europe and Asia in their 20s, Karstan and Maxine realised one country they were missing – Australia. So in 2009, the pair bought their first Kombi van and have been living on and off the road ever since, including this recent trip through the arid Australian Outback and lush rainforests with their 1968 panel van. “It [overseas] made us realise that we live in one of the best bloody countries in the world,” said Maxine, as we recount their early travels through Spain. “Why do we have to go overseas to have an experience when you can just drive?” Though Australia is known for its beautiful coastlines, Karstan and Maxine were both ready to venture off the beaten track and experience the vast terrain of the Outback. The couple beams as they reveal just a few of the beautiful sights they have seen over the years and the people they have been lucky enough to meet along the way. They talk about other travelling families they connected with, small rural towns full of people with stories to share, about feeding crocodiles and seeing wild native animals. And then there’s little Zuri, taking all of it in with her parents. “Zuri was a dream,” Maxine said.

“Her brain is a sponge and she's constantly being stimulated with new experiences and peopl e and seeing animals and hearing different things. I feel like the past 12 months for her has reall y helped with her development and shaped her into this beautiful little girl that is just a little ray of sunshine.” But, how do they manage to travel with such a young child? It’s all about routine… or lack thereof. The couple will map out their bucket list destinations and just drive and see where each day takes them. And because each day is a new adventure, every trip is full of highlights. Of course, like all travel, van life does not come without its challenges, but Karstan and Maxine believe the experience re l i e s e n t i re l y o n you r m i nd s et . “I had to pull the engine out twice!” Karstan said. “But that's not a biggie… stripped it down to nuts and bolts, put it back together… on the road in 24 hours.” “ I f yo u w a n t i t t o w o r k , yo u ' l l m a ke i t wor k ,” M a xi n e s a i d . As well as being excell ent savers, owning the van saves the young family from spending on transport costs. Affordable accommodation can also be found around the country between beautiful free camping spots, farm stays, pubs and caravan parks. With a weekl y budget for the necessities, Max and Karstan also keep money to the side for those special experiences the y feel are worth splurging on. Fo r t h i s c o u p l e , t h e c h a l l e n g e s added to each adventure; obstacles the y h ad to overcome as a unit allowed them to thrive. And as for Newcastl e? Nothing h as ch anged, and that’s just the way they like it.

“After this big trip that we felt really fortunate to do, especiall y, considering the times. We were rolling in to Newcastle, seeing the coastline, and the place where we grew up, we both got emotional,” Maxine said. Spending their weekends back at home taking in the fresh beaches and warm sun, they’re enjoying a rest and are focusing on simplifying their lives and spending time together as a family. However, it is the wanderlust that drives this family and the desire to seek out the unknown. “We could pull out a map right now and point at all th at we experienced at every singl e place,” Kars tan said. And looking at the stickers th at adorn the walls of the Kombi and Karstan’s own shredded shirt from the Outback town of Betoota, it’s easy to see Karstan and Maxine live life to the fullest and live in the moment, pushing their littl e Kombi to its limits. “We want to turn this thing into an unstoppable unit,” Karstan said. And they would like nothing else than for others to follow in their footsteps. “ We wo ul d l ove t o s e e a l o t m ore young peopl e seeing and experiencing s o m e re m o te p l a c e s ,” M a xi n e s a i d . It is a ll about the love of adventure. “Just get a pin and pick a spot… You can do it. Anyone can do it,” Karstan said. As for what you need to pull it off just like they have? For the kind of travel Karstan and Max love, knowing your vehicle is a must. “We’ve often gone days without seeing people,” they said, so they carry plenty of water, fuel, a first aid kit and UHF radio for when they’re out of range. And, above all: “Pack light! You’ll be able to buy anything you forgot on the road.” And if you need any inspiration, take just one look at the coupl e’s Instagram and you’ll get a sneak peek of all the a d ve n t u re s t h a t l a y a h e a d of yo u .

Harnessing the power of community

s we all collectively begin to recover from the effects of the past year, it is time to look forward to 2021. Among those of us planning ahead is Melissa Histon, empowered as ever and ready to continue making her positive impact on the world.

mongst other things, the past year h as seen a rise in peopl e supporting their local community, be it through activel y s u p p o r t i n g A u s tr a l i a n - o w n e d businesses to simpl y reaching out and offering support to their friends, famil y and neighbours. No one is a better champion for this community empowerment than Melissa Histon. The founder and CEO of Hunter-based foundation Got Your Back Sista and The Sista Code works tirelessly in her humanitarian endeavours, continuing to host her podcast Hey Soul Sista and expanding the philanthropic efforts of Got Your Back Sista to a retail store, all throughout changing social restrictions. “No one had a crystal ball. We didn't know how it was going to play out,” Melissa said of the challenges faced this year. Entering hustle mode, a lot of 2020’s focus was simply on surviving. Melissa founded online community The Sista Code in 2014 after surviving breast cancer and l earning of the impact of sex-trafficking in third world regions. She soon quit her corporate day job and shifted her sights in favour of philanthropy and activism related to the empowerment of women. The Sista Code quickly grew from women sharing their own stories to hosting fundraising projects and events. This led to the creation of Got Your Back Sista in 2016, the charitable arm of the foundation th at directl y gives aid and support to women and their children escaping domestic violence. The organisation’s second-h and retail store Village People, opened in Islington in March 2020, offers highquality donated second-h and and brand-new clothing and homewares with proceeds going to Got Your Back Sista. The store also directly supports women getting back on their feet by offering work experience that credits toward a Cert II in Retail Services. 48 |

…it's hard to stand on a corner and go, ‘Hey, everybody, look, I'm standing against domestic violence’, but if you get a crowd of, you know, 100, 200, 300, 1000…

“Sometimes when you're doing something th at’s out of your comfort zone, you just need someone to hold your h and through th at.” Melissa said. Support has continued to flow in for various projects and fundraising initiatives coordinated by the foundation, including teams of people on the ground renovating and organising temporary housing and shelters for others across the Hunter region. It is this support that has reall y shown Melissa the power of community. “I've become much more aware of social issues and the plight of women and people experiencing abuse,” she said. “But I've also seen awareness grow… it's hard to stand on a corner and go, ‘Hey, everybody, look, I'm standing against domestic violence’, but if you get a crowd of, you know, 100, 200, 300, 1000…” Even after each episode of her podcas t, He y Soul Sista, Melissa is moved by listeners reaching ou t to h er s e l f or th e g u e s t s wi th g ra t i t u de. “‘Thank you for talking about that’, ‘I reall y needed to hear that today’, or ‘Actually, that happened to me’. You know, that's the power of community – people not feeling so alone, and not feeling like they're the only ones going through a tough time, or the only ones who have experienced a challenge or a hardship,” she said. As we look forward to a world more aware and more receptive to social issues related to people of colour, women and LGBTQIA+ individuals, Melissa continues to feel even more empowered to create change in this world and foster a greater sense of community. She asks the question, ‘How do we bring about healing?’ “2021 is about harnessing the power of community f or th e e m p ower m e n t of wo m e n ,” s h e s a i d . As far as projects are concerned, it’s an exhaustive list and includes firsts for Melissa, such as producing a short film that will shine more light on The Sista Code’s main focus areas, as well as rescheduling many of the events pushed back in 2020. She is also partnering with local businesses that have similar values – empowering women and uplifting individuals in need or crisis – that will help the organisation, and Melissa, to thrive. “That's something I absolutely believe. I want to seek out those organisations that really have those same core ethos and values… we can save more people by working together.” Follow Melissa Histon on Instagram @melissahiston and keep up to date with her philanthropic efforts @GotYourBackSista

OVERSUBSCRIBED ALANA NIXON & LAURA JACKEL
R
un by friends of 15 years Alana Nixon and Laura J ackel, Oversubscribed is “the podcast for women who are hell-bent on squeezing the most out of life”, Covering topics from pop culture and current affairs from their perspectives as readers, writers, mothers and proud Newcastle dwellers. Now in its fifth season, Oversubscribed has an audience reaching across Australia’s coastal capitals with a growing following in New Zealand and the United Kingdom, all recorded from Newcastle’s own Podcast Station. Wh at h as the journe y been like c re a t i n g O ver s u b s c r i b e d P o d c a s t ? Laura: It has been really fun but also a lot of work! We met at Hunter TAFE in 2005 when we both worked as part of the marketing team. Over a breakfast catch up one day we were both talking about how much we enjoyed podcasts and wondered if we should give it a go. Initially, we imagined our audience would be women of a similar age living in Newcastle but we discovered as we approached Season 3, that the ma jority of our listeners were from the east coast capitals: Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. These days, Newcastle is our fourth largest market and we have a growing following in New Zealand and the UK. Alana: It’s been amazing. It started as something we wanted to try out and after the rel ease of a few episodes, we found women were saying to us, “Listening to you two is just like having a conversation wi t h m y f r i e n d s ” . We we re s t o k e d . What inspires you as writers and broadcasters? Laura: For me, it is life generall y: being a parent, a wife, a friend, a daughter and a woman over 40. I am inspired by the people around me too, and how they are handling similar life stages and challenges. Alana: For me, it’s breaking news. I’m a total news junkie. I’m also keen for us as women to shed light on important issues that affect us and talk about them honestl y, too. Our recent episode on toxic positivity is one exampl e of th at. We made a conscious decision early on to not be too preachy on the podcast. We’re literally just sharing our lives, we’re not telling you how to live yours.

Who are your dream podcas t gues ts? L a u ra : We a l wa ys ta l k a b ou t J a c i nd a Ardern and what a great leader she is – I’d love to get her on for some inspirational life tips and jus t to hear about her experience as PM of New Zealand. Also, I’d love to interview writer and comedian Caitlin Moran for the laughs and Kylie Minogue because I have loved her forever. Alana: Someone who is interesting and comes prepared. As for actual people, I would love AOC (Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez) to come on our podcast. She’s a congresswoman from New York and she is so sharp. We’ve spoken about her a lot on the podcast and we love how she calls out misogyny and bullies too. Between work, family life and Oversubscribed Po d c a s t , h ow d o you f i nd d ow n t i m e? Laura: Ha, good question! I always make time for some physical exercise during the week and on weekends I try to see friends and occasionally work on the podcast. It is hard to have true downtime but I have a supportive husband in Jules and sometimes I just book things in for myself – the odd massage here and there or dinner with friends. Alana: I’m not sure if I do. My little window of downtime is usually walking my dog in my lunch break while listening to – you guessed it – podcasts. I typically fall into bed at 9:30pm and always try to find something to watch on TV or streaming, even if it’s just for 30 minutes. It makes me feel like I’ve at least carved out some time for myself in a day.

Façon Luxe How would you describe your personal style? Laura: I have always loved shopping but I like to mix up high street with occasional second-hand or unique finds. I guess you could say my personal style is ‘high street smart casual’ if that’s a thing. I grew up in the UK and so I am obsessed by boots and jackets, and while winter here is short I feel much more myself in cool climate clothes. I am a bit of a slave to trends but now I am over 40 I have worked out wh at styl es and sh apes suit me best. Alana: I honestly don’t know but when we had a recent style session with Natalie Baker at Charlestown Square, Laura told me my style was classic. This made me feel quite accomplished and Audrey Hepburn-esque. What is the most cherished item in your closet and why? Laura: My leather biker jacket, which has been a favourite for many years now. As I mentioned, I love winter clothes and think a leather jacket gives every outfit an ‘edge’. A l a n a : Th e y a re s o o l d n ow b u t my G u e s s l ow - r i s e s k i n ny j e a n s a re favourites. Do you know how h ard it is to find low-rise jeans these da ys?

Their tanks utilise a mixture of Epsom salt and heated water and can create a zerogravity environment, with the tranquil and dark space allowing your mind and body to drift into deep relaxation without any interventions from the world outside. When floating, the ma jority of your senses are restricted causing the nervous system to reset and your mind to enter a deep state of equanimity and healing. Many people believe that regular float sessions improve stress-related disorders and stimulate the production of feel-good endorphins. So whether you are after a simple massage or something more unique, the Newcastle Float Centre can support you in achieving a state of relaxation and rejuvenation. THE BLUEPRINT OF EYE-FORMATION HAZE COLLECTION is the definition of style that lives between positive and negative space, with a strong emotional connection between the urbane and the environment. We gather our inspiration of its design from architectural elements of blueprints, concrete, copper and transformative geometry.
THE HEXAGONAL STRUCTURE Design & structural innovation in architectural design, has inspired HAZE COLLECTION to apply a three-stage metal architecture detail to the temples of each eyewear. It not only looks beautiful, but also provides infinite possibilities for the functional extension of the frame.
TITANIUM NOSE PAD HAZE COLLECTION uses titanium for all nosepieces – it’s just as light as feather, and will not oxidize, while upping the luxe nature of the frame.
CONSTRUCTION HAZE COLLECTION provides the most unique and up to date construction in eyewear while keeping the frame wearable.
BEST LENS HAZE COLLECTION chooses Carl Zeiss and Essilor lens for sunglasses to best protect your eyes. We focus not just in beauty but also function.
UNIQUE COLOUR HAZE COLLECTION is most proud on colour selection and combination. We have the resources of the latest lens colour and materials and have come up with the most interesting colour ways and unique visual concepts from gradient hues to our nebula lenses coated in stardust that will take you to the moon and back!
CUSTOM MATERIAL We work closely with the most heritage material vendor Mazzuchelli to come up with beautiful material only HAZE COLLECTION can offer.

Façon Beauté As the days grow longer and we start spending more time in the sun, it’s important to take care of our skin. Enter esmi Skin Minerals, created by Evette Hess in 2017. Vegan, crueltyfree and Aus tra lian-made, each product is designed carefully to treat skin concerns while nourishing the skin and letting natural beauty shine. As one of the Financial Review’s Fast 100 of 2020 esmi seems unstoppable as it continues to break grounds in the beauty world. We asked Evette to share how esmi works and the secret to cl ear, glowing skin. For the uninitiated, what is the story behind esmi? Before starting esmi Skin Minerals I worked in the beauty industry for more than 10 years and was very familiar with ingredients suited to different skin concerns. Most of my work was on problematic skin types. We would do advanced treatments on clients and use great skincare, but there just wasn’t a makeup on the market that served their skin. My goal was to give them something they could apply that almost acted like another skincare step. From this esmi Skin Minerals, and its first product, Liquid Mineral Foundation, was born in 2017. This product provides beautiful coverage but is actuall y formulated with niacinamide and hyaluronic acid so it treats the skin while you wear it. This was a pretty new concept at the time, and the product still remains a best seller today. Having battled acne in my early life and understanding the challenges that people in this position face, the next big challenge for me was dry skin, ageing and pigmentation. My skin was constantl y changing and as such, so were my skin concerns and needs. My personal skin journey plus my knowledge of the industry and beneficial ingredients paved
BEAUTY Q+A
Façon Beauté the way for the expansion of the esmi Skin Minerals range to help treat multiple skin concerns at many different sta ges of life, including during pregnancy and breastfeeding. How does esmi stand out from the rest? Our values are very strong, and something we will not waver from. All our products are vegan and cruelty-free as well as Australian-made. Creating products that leave a softer imprint on our bodies and on the world is really important to us, and we vow to do this with only the best quality ingredients. We also follow a ‘less-is-more’ and ‘be-kind-to-your-skin’ approach to skincare – even for acne skin. There are so many harsh and aggressive ingredients on the market today. Whilst I don’t discount the effectiveness of some of these products, I truly believe that treating skin with kindness is what will allow it to heal and thrive. Our products do not include any harsh chemicals, parabens, SLSs or fillers, but still contain high levels of actives, antioxidants and vitamins. The results speak for themselves. Our cus tomers can use esmi S k i n M i n era l s wi th co n f i de n ce , knowing they are buying 100 per ce n t eth i c a l l y s ou rce d , c r u e l t y free, and an Australian skincare and makeup range they can trust. We also stand out from the rest with the customer care and support we provide. We have a dedicated skin service team that is available seven days a week offering tailored advice to our amazing cus tomers. Our customers are our number one priority and they are treated accordingl y.

Wh at do you look for in skincare products? I reall y love ingredients that you can see. By choosing clear packaging for many of our products, we are also choosing to be very transparent about what’s going inside! For anyone who is not in formulation or a scientist, it can also be very tricky navigating ingredients lists so I always say “let the results speak for themselves”. Finding a company that can show you customer success stories is a benefit, and this is something we really pride ourselves on. Success stories should be celebrated. A balance between natural ingredients and powerful actives is also ideal! How do you switch up your routine for summer-ready skin? Get to know your skin, see what it needs, get to know your ranges and feed your skin the ingredients it’s craving. Your skin will change from week to week, month to month. It might not be the same summer this year versus summer last year. Personally, I find myself reaching for cooling and hydrating products/ masks in summer. The Soft Skin Refining Charcoal Clay Mask is also great to exfoliate away any build-up from sunscreen and makeup in the warmer months. I also prefer using light hydrating skincare and not too much foundation. Instead I opt for a mineral BB cream instead. Sunscreen too, of course! Wh at is one skincare secret you wish more people knew? Being kind to your skin and not using harsh, alcohol-heavy, and acidic ingredients will actuall y work better for you. We meet so many customers who have suffered unnecessaril y for so long. Though apprehensive at first, switching to a non-drying range and appl ying things like oils has helped them achieve the most incredibl e results and in a short space of time. 218 |

TAYLA Whimsical and innocent, TAYLA showcases a quiet confidence that works in harmony with her uniquely embellished outfit. Her beautifully blended tones combine to present a carefree, tousled bob, accentuated by hints of copper dancing with movement and texture in the summer breeze. The sun kisses the colour variation in the curls eliciting a sense of freedom and reflecting the settling dusk on the Australian landscape. TAYLA applies Defence Extinguish and Elements Motion to damp hair and blow dries in, before applying another small amount of Elements Motion and drying in again. Using a conical wand, she takes vertical sections throughout the hair, before blow-drying Elements Sea Swell into her hair for volume. Tayla then uses a wide tooth comb to stretch out curl and applies Elements Quicksand to the roots and mid-lengths, before finishing the style with a spritz of Elements Sandstorm.

LUCY Evoking the quintessential feeling of Australiana, LUCY is sultry strength, basking in the afternoon sun. It exudes from her cropped global colour, highlighted by threads of gold in her IXIAH outfit, and streams of sunlight catch the metallic shimmer in her makeup. LUCY applies Instant Satur8 and dries her hair. She finishes by applying DMAN Pomade or Defence Argan Oil.

The embodiment of Boho Luxe, HEIDI’s feminine spirit and festival-inspired multitextural fishtail braid perfectly complement her floral ensemble. HEIDI sprays in Defence Extinguish and Elements Densify to her damp hair, and blow dries in using a directional blow dry technique. Taking a horseshoe section from recession to recession, and using a large barrel curler, HEIDI takes vertical sections throughout the hair to create movement. She clips hair using pin curl clips and then allows them to curl. She completes her fishtail braid and uses Elements Quicksand and Elements Vapour Mist to finish.

ARIARNE
ARIARNE’s golden hues of honey and creamy blonde shine in the Australian sun, the breezy summer’s day delivering carefree movement to her style. Floaty fabrics and intricate embellishments give a distinct edge to ARIARNE, with finely weaved foils. ARIARNE sprays Defence Extinguish and applies a small amount of Elements Clay into wet hair, before blow drying in using a paddle brush. She uses a medium sized barrel curler on vertical sections before allowing to cool. Brushing the hair out, ARIARNE smooths fly aways with Elements Afterglow and finishes with a spritz of Elements Vapour Mist.
