WOW, THEY’RE BACK AGAIN!

No, they aren’t playing games with your heart anymore! The Backstreet Boys are coming to Bahrain.

One of the biggest boy bands from the '90s – The Backstreet Boys, an American group consisting of AJ McLean, Brian Littrell, Howie Dorough, Kevin Scott Richardson and Nick Carter, are scheduled to perform in the Kingdom at the Al Dana Amphitheatre on May 9. This comes as part of the band’s DNA World Tour which recently announced new dates that will see the band visiting Iceland, Africa, Southeast Asia and the Middle East.

In January of 2019, the Backstreet Boys released their ninth studio album DNA through a collaboration with the group's own K-BAHN record label and RCA Records. The album debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, becoming the band’s third number-one album following 1999’s Millennium and 2000’s Black & Blue. The new album features the hit single Don’t Go Breaking My Heart, which was also nominated in the Best Pop Duo/Group category at the 2019 Grammy Awards.

Over their career spanning more than two decades, The Backstreet Boys have sold over 100 million records worldwide, making them the best-selling boy band of all time, and one of the world's best-selling music artists.

Along with tracks from their latest album, the band will also serenade fans with some of their nostalgia-heavy back catalogue that’s guaranteed to take fans back to the '90s and early 2000s,

with beloved hits such as Quit Playing Games (With My Heart), I Want It That Way, Everybody, Show Me The Meaning Of Being Lonely, Larger than Life, Shape Of My Heart and many more. ✤

The Kingdom will host one of the leading gardening and agricultural shows in the Arabian Gulf. The Bahrain International Garden Show (BIGS) 2023 will be inaugurated on March 9. The exhibits will be open to visitors on the day from 1pm to 9pm and from March 10 to 12 from 10am to 9pm. RAMADAN TRADITIONS

The Holy Month is a time of prayer and fasting. While that’s the main focus, each individual or family observes it differently. In this feature, we speak to Bahrainis and expats from different backgrounds, who talk about their unique practices and traditions.

ISA YUSUF ALGHAWI Athlete

During Ramadan, we split our training into two sessions: the first before sunset or iftar when we train in the sea. We may also accompany this with indoor training. The second after the Taraweeh prayer, during which we train for an hour to an hour and a half indoors using the rowing machines. We make it a point to train at least two to three times a week depending on our schedule. We maintain enough energy for the day by eating a Suhour meal high in carbohydrates, magnesium and sugar. However, during Iftar, we stick to moderate portions with a good amount of protein and fibre, ending with desserts for energy. Drinking a lot of water during the non-fasting hours is essential to stay hydrated because during fasting hours, energy and stamina are limited due to the lack of food and water. This makes a hearty, healthy Suhour meal and hydration throughout the non-fasting hours essential. To sum up, some important tips to follow are: drink plenty of water during the non-fasting hours, know your limits while exercising to avoid fatigue and health related issues and, lastly, eat moderate quantities during the non-fasting hours to avoid gaining extra weight or losing muscle. Sports aside, a favourite Ramadan tradition for me is visiting our relatives; even far off relatives visit.

HISHAM Teacher

As we all know, Ramadan is the Holy Month in Islam and fasting during Ramadan is the third pillar of Islam. For a true Muslim, Ramadan is an incredible opportunity to show your submission to the orders of your Creator. Yes, it is difficult to work as well as fast. However, my inner power increases in Ramadan, which reflects in my work. In addition, I adapt myself to teaching in Ramadan. I have been teaching English for 20 years in different countries including Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. I talk less. I do activities that require less talking and more thinking and writing. As for grading papers and preparing for the next lecture, I prefer to do these after breakfast. Yes, I teach students who fast. I adopt the technique of involving them in activities so they won’t be distracted or bored. Keeping calm is natural during Ramadan as my spiritual power is at its peak. Also, I remind myself and my students of the importance of being calm so that their fast can be acceptable. I plan my activities in a way that allows me to teach effectively and advise my colleagues to do the same. Prepare your lesson to make it interesting for your students. I recite the Holy Quran during this month. I walk every day in Ramadan before breakfast.

I’ve been living in Bahrain since 2019. I started observing Ramadan in 2021 but I really didn’t think I could do it at the start because of the heat; my main issue was the lack of water but with every day it got a little easier. I overcame the difficulty by remembering my reasons for observing Ramadan. The reason I observe Ramadan as a Christian is because my husband Hussain, who is Bahraini and Muslim, observes it and I noticed how it benefited him both mentally and physically. For me, Ramadan is a beautiful

month for self-reflection and grounding. Knowing that I can spend time with my extended family in the evenings for Iftar makes getting through the long days a little easier. Hussain’s mum Fatima always makes the best Iftar [food] and takes into consideration our diets. Ramadan enriches my life mentally and physically. After the first week or so, once my body has adjusted, I feel energetic and my mind is clear. I stay busy and stick to my usual schedule, otherwise I find the hours can really drag. What I love the most about Ramadan in Bahrain is how much it brings families together. Nothing is more important than family and no matter what is going on in each individual’s life, we all come together to sit down and eat with one another.

calm] I exercise regularly and use deep breathing as a relaxation technique. As I work in shifts, I usually break my fast at work. These days are difficult as I miss our family rituals and experiencing Ramadan traditions such as Gergaoun with my young daughter and Al-Qadr nights with special activities and prayers. However, I compensate by having my food with my colleagues and remind myself that nursing is a humanitarian job and the patients need me, knowing God will reward me.

FATIMA MOHAMMED Nurse

I start my day eating a light meal or snack like an apple or banana with fluids to remain hydrated and energised with nutrients before the sunrise as Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him) encourages us. Then, I perform Al Fajr prayer and read the Holy Quran and Duaa [usually read out of a book, asking God to grant any wishes we may have]. Ramadan is not only about withholding food and fluids but also overlooking mistakes and slips, selfrestraint and being powerful and patient; nurses deal with people at their weakest. Also, I ensure getting enough sleep, avoiding heavy, greasy meals and having plenty of fluids. I start fasting a few weeks earlier as a training for my body and soul. I also reduce my coffee and tea intake gradually. Some other practices I follow are praying more and performing acts that will bring me closer to God: visiting family, attending Islamic lectures, reading the Holy Quran and giving alms to the poor and needy. FAHEEDA FAHDAD Corporate Events Manager

At least a month before Ramadan, I start to mentally prepare my son Fayz and keep the excitement going by decorating the house and sharing Ramadan stories. We create a chart and we set goals every year. This year is going to be extra special as Fayz will be observing his first fast, inshaAllah. We will definitely be facing the inevitable process of waking him up for Suhour. During the Holy Month, we abstain as much as we can from entertainment. We make it a point to go to Taraweeh together as a family. It is a must to call our friends and family for Futoor; [there is] nothing as joyful as breaking your fast with family and friends and praying together at home. As Ramadan is a time for self-reflection, we make it a habit to have story time every day. After Taraweeh, we sit together and read a story of our prophets and discuss the wisdom each story conveys. I also encourage my son to read a story to us and share what he learned from it. This year, we plan to make a Ramadan corner at home to have story time, prayers and other activities, inshaAllah.

POWERFUL STYLISH & SECURE

FACT was delighted to spend a day in the new and improved MG RX5, a well-rounded SUV to seriously consider.

• ISLAND RIDES

This month, compliments of the team at Zayani Motors, FACT had the opportunity to test drive the all-new MG RX5. Having already experienced the MG GS, the MG RX8, the MG ZS EV and the MG ZST in recent years, we expected big things from the brand’s latest SUV.

Exterior

Several enhancements have been implemented to the exterior of MG’s second-generation RX5. Zayani Motors explained that a new digital computing design method was adopted to create a youthful and dynamic look. This redesign was most noticeable at the front end where the new, wide and three-dimensional front geometric grille is on full display. This centre piece is flanked by sleek, full-crystal LED headlamps, complete with C-shaped daytime running lights.

Along with the flowing lines of the vehicle, the sides of the RX5 showcase electronic door mirrors with integrated side indicators and 19-inch alloy wheels fitted with low-noise Michelin PS4 tyres. At the rear, uniquely designed LED taillights, inspired by HighSpeed Quantum Energy Block, deliver a striking visual effect when illuminated. Further contributing towards the sporty presence of this SUV is the stylish Twin-Aero rear spoiler, with high mount brake light.

Interior

In our PLUS LUX trim model, the brand’s home designinspired approach has resulted in a comfortable and naturalfeeling interior. The cabin has been aesthetically designed with soft and padded materials to provide the most relaxed and homely experience possible.

Further available exclusively on the LUX model is a six-way electric driver's seat complete with lumbar support along with four-way electric passenger seats. All three trim levels of the new MG RX5 range have a panoramic sunroof, ensuring an abundance of natural light.

In the cockpit, the ergonomically designed electric gear lever has a unique, futuristic quality to it, while the multifunctional, adjustable steering wheel adds power steering to the equation. Further enhancing the comfort of the MG RX5 is the spacious cabin. Conveniently designed storage areas are located throughout whilst the luggage compartment, complete with power tailgate, offers ample room for transporting goods.

Technology & Infotainment

MG have equipped their latest SUV with a world-first, UVC deep ultraviolet optical antivirus system, that completely sterilises the flow of air entering the vehicle through the AC unit. This sanitary space is further enhanced by the inclusion of an ultra-efficient filter element, along with special nano fabric roof lining that has both anti-bacterial and odour-reducing properties.

The new RX5 integrates a modish, hi-tech, 14.1-inch HD vertical touchscreen into the centre console panel. Our PLUS LUX model included a 12.3-inch HD virtual cluster panel with trip computer, Bluetooth, full smartphone integration for both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a GPS navigation system, along with a wireless phone charger.

Safety

Renowned for using the latest safety technology, MG have installed a body structure that comprises over 65% high-strength steel. This element of the structural design minimises the force of an impact by absorbing the energy of a collision.

The range’s standard Electric Stability Program comes complete with eight safety functions that include ABS, EBD, EBA, ARP, CBC, TCS and BDW. These inclusions enhance driving stability in challenging road conditions and in situations where highperformance driving is required.

MG have also fitted front, side and curtain airbags as standard on the new RX5. Other standard features include cruise control, traction control, auto hold, hill assist and a rear-view camera. Full option models are further equipped with a 360-degree parking view camera.

Power & Performance

Powering the SUV is the second-generation Net Blue petrol engine. This 1.5-litre, high-pressure, direct injection, turbocharged engine produces a power output of 171hp and a maximum torque of 275Nm. This allows for a 0-100km/h time of 9.4 seconds and a respectable top speed of 190km/h.

All the models in the new MG range come equipped with an innovative seven-speed Dual Clutch Transmission. We found this new setup to not only provide a spirited on-road performance but a far smoother experience as well.

Furthermore, the 2023 RX5’s chassis features multiple improvements, including an upgraded shock absorber system. This enables it to deliver a more stable, comfortable and quieter ride; further enhanced by the double-layer laminated soundproof windscreen.

Our Verdict

MG continue to build a firm reputation for producing safety- and performance-orientated vehicles. The all-new MG RX5 is no exception and anyone looking to purchase a well-rounded SUV should seriously consider this 2023 model. ✤

THE ALL-NEW VOLVO S60

FACT was pleased to see that Volvo continue to produce models that uphold their sterling reputation.

Over the years, Volvo have firmly established a reputation for manufacturing stylish vehicles that are both safety- and comfort-oriented. The company is also renowned for producing cars equipped with premium features, usually reserved for models with a far higher price tag. This month, thanks to the team at Volvo Bahrain, FACT had the opportunity to test drive the 2023 Volvo S60 mild hybrid; a modern and practical saloon featuring several upgrades, along with the expected array of safety and driver assistance features.

Exterior

With numerous improvements in design, the master craftsmen and women at Volvo have ensured this four-door, mid-sized saloon looks great from every angle. The first upgrade to grab our attention was the new, dark-themed front grille design, flanked by the distinctive, brand-specific Thor’s-hammer LED headlights. This combination is further complemented by the inclusion of a newly designed front bumper.

At the sides, the concave surfaces of the doors catch light, showcasing the powerful yet graceful lines of the body. Although our model included 18-inch alloy wheels, we were informed that a full range of high-end wheel designs and sizes is available for the 2023 model.

At the rear, the deck-lid spoiler sits above the updated rear

bumper, with large, C-shaped LED taillights providing a further touch of class. Finishing off the exterior in style are the hidden end pipes that hint at the S60’s on-road performance capabilities.

Interior

Once inside the new S60, the classic Scandinavian refinement and minimalist perfection the brand is so well-known for, was on full display. Everything about the interior seemed practical in nature, functional in design and elegant in its makeup. Welcomed by power-adjustable front seats, complete with side and lumbar support, we couldn’t have had a more comfortable vantage point from which to take in the pristine interior layout. From the upholstery, to the trimmings, to the finishes, Volvo have made sure that every material used in the construction of the interior is of a premium quality. This includes the tasteful aluminium metal mesh inlays located throughout the vehicle. Boasting class-leading legroom, along with ample headroom, up to three passengers can sit comfortably in the back. Adding to the sense of space is the panoramic sunroof that allows an abundance of natural light into the cabin. The practical nature of the car is enhanced by the ample luggage compartment that provides 442 litres of storage capacity.

and pollution levels is the advanced air purifier system that prevents hazardous particles from entering the cabin. One of our favourite features of the S60 was the updated infotainment system that now comes with built-in Google apps and services. We found this user-friendly system to be one of the most convenient, responsive and intuitive setups we have encountered. This nextgeneration system houses a 12.3-inch driver display that features high quality graphics and offers unparalleled connectivity.

Safety & Driver Assistance

When one drives in a Volvo, they can rest assured that they are travelling in a car designed by one of the most safety-conscious brands on the market. The new S60 is no exception. Volvo have equipped this updated model with their latest Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) sensor platform. This modern and scalable active safety system consists of an assortment of cameras, radars and ultrasonic sensors.

Thanks to this advanced platform, the new S60 can intelligently detect the actions of other road users and apply automatic braking and collision avoidance. This assistance includes collision mitigation support, lane keeping assist, pilot assist, park assist, hill start assist and cruise control. The 2023 model also features front, side and knee airbags.

Power & Performance

The latest S60 is powered by a capable B4, 2.0-litre, Turbo, Mild Hybrid petrol engine that produces 197hp. Travelling in this smooth-sailing saloon, we appreciated the feeling of security and refinement that is synonymous with the Volvo brand. In fact, we found every aspect of the S60’s performance to be responsive, well-balanced and precise. Thanks to the new chassis system, advanced braking capabilities and ample power on offer, we always felt in complete control of the driving experience. Furthermore, this mild hybrid variant of the S60 offers up to 15% fuel savings and emission reductions in real-world driving.

Our Verdict

Volvo have produced yet another outstanding model, one equipped with all the necessary features to ensure the safest, most comfortable and responsive driving experience possible. ✤

PEDAL FOR POWER

Acer has unveiled an innovative bike desk that charges your laptop while you pedal and work.

Acer has launched the eKinekt BD 3 bike desk that allows users to simultaneously work and exercise while also generating their own clean electricity.

The eKinekt BD 3 converts the kinetic energy from the rider’s pedalling into an electric charge that powers the machine. One hour of constant cycling at 60 revolutions per minute (RPM) on the bike desk can generate 75 watts of power which can then be utilised to charge laptops and other devices.

The desk can be used in two modes – in Working Mode, the desk surface moves closer to the chair to let riders sit in an upright position while typing and pedalling. While in Sports Mode, the desk top sits further forward, giving users more room to lean in, similar to the position on a standard bike or trainer.

Users can seamlessly adjust the bike’s resistance, seat and desk height based on preferred placement for added flexibility and comfort.

The eKinekt also has a user-friendly companion app that provides real-time information to check the user's riding duration, distance, speed, etc.

The device is equipped with two USB Type-A ports and

one USB Type-C port, a bag hook and a beverage holder for added convenience.

As part of its long-term commitment to empower sustainability, the eKinekt BD 3’s desktop and the casing that protects the bike’s components are made from post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic. ✤

DUAL SOLUTION

Dyson has come up with a wearable air purifier with high-fidelity over-ear headphones.

Technology company Dyson marks its first step into the wearable technology market with the futuristic-looking Dyson Zone – a set of noise-cancelling, high-fidelity over-ear headphones with a detachable visor for on-the-go air purification.

Born from Dyson’s 30 years of expertise in airflow, filtration and motor technologies, the Dyson Zone headphones are engineered to tackle the dual challenges of city noise and air pollution. They’re capable of simultaneously delivering immersive sound to the ears and purified airflow to the nose and mouth.

The compressors in each earcup draw air through the duallayer filters and project two streams of purified air to the wearer’s nose and mouth, channelled through the non-contact detachable visor. Electrostatic filters capture 99% of particle pollution as small as 0.1 microns, whilst K-Carbon, potassiumenriched carbon filters target prevalent acidic gases most associated with city pollution.

The noise-cancelling headphones provide ultra-low distortion audio, advanced noise cancellation (ANC) and faithful, fullspectrum audio reproduction. The ANC system uses eight microphones to reduce the sound of the city by up to 38dB and monitor surrounding sounds 384,000 times a second. A unique EQ setting optimises the frequency curve for clear, pure audio across the full audible frequency range.

The device is powered by advanced lithium-ion batteries and uses USB-C charging. The headphones offer 50 hours of audioonly run-time or four hours of combined purification and audio run-time. They charge to 100% in three hours. ✤

UNWASTE YOUR FOOD

Reencle changes food waste into organic gardening superfood using a high-tech composter.

The Reencle Prime food waste composter transforms the way we handle our food waste and helps convert it into useful compost that’s highly beneficial for the garden.

The composter uses ReencleMicrobe – a microorganism that reproduces itself when cultivated and fed well. It is naturebased and converts food waste into effective fertiliser. ReencleMicrobe is derived from food and is harmless to the human body and the environment.

Regardless of the type of food leftovers, the organic ReencleMicrobe is extremely halotolerant and acidophilic, and works uninterrupted when tasked with breaking down food waste even with high levels of salt or acidity.

The compost is ready to be used in a matter of hours (depending on the type of food waste) and can then be spread on top of the soil in gardens, on lawns or on indoor potted plants, releasing rich nutrients into the soil.

The device can hold a maximum of around 700g of food waste and carries out the composting process in a three-layer filtering system that is designed for odour-free composting.

The Reencle composter operates quietly, below 28 decibels and

comes with a built-in motion sensor and motorised lid that opens automatically on sensing a user’s foot or wave of their hand. It is available in two colours – Iron Silver and Star White. ✤

In Conversation with… Ahsan Chishty

Valuing strong business relationships and friendships, First Motors WLL’s General Manager shares what he loves about the automotive sector especially that of Bahrain.

fact magazine 62 • 5 OVER 5

You have been in the automotive industry for almost 20 years. What first drew you to this sector?

I entered the automotive industry in 1994 not really knowing what I was getting into and certainly not thinking that I would be working in this industry for almost 30 years. I was drawn to it purely for my love and passion for cars and decided very quickly that this was where I wanted to develop my career. There is something very special about working in this sector as you have the opportunity to meet many individuals where you build strong relationships and many go on to be great friends. I have had the pleasure of working with some incredible brands and have learned so much. Having seen first-hand the way our business has evolved over the last three decades is truly magnificent. Looking outside in, it is easy to say that the automotive business is easy, when actually it is quite the opposite. Our business is deeply complex and requires a lot of strategic thinking which makes it so interesting. Our main objectives are to always focus on the best customer experience and, in parallel, have the best team to deliver on our promise.

What convinced you to move from the UK to Bahrain in 2016 and what differences do you find in the sector here?

Having not worked outside of the UK before and hearing and reading about what a wonderful place Bahrain is and the added benefit of working with the Alzayani Group, I was convinced that the decision was right. Seven years on, Bahrain has become my home. I genuinely hope I can retire here. The automotive business [of both countries] is very similar. The main difference is working with a smaller population where you get to know your clients personally. Furthermore, I find that our clients are truly amazing. Naturally, they want the best

but they are so humble and polite in their approach. This is such a unique quality of this beautiful country.

What sets First Motors apart from the other dealerships in the market?

We are so fortunate to represent within First Motors the Hyundai and Genesis brands. We focus on our customer journey and look to support them fully from the time of purchase, then to their journey in our aftersales department and then onto their future purchases. All automotive brands in Bahrain have their own goals and focus areas and they challenge us to continually improve and evolve and we certainly rise to that challenge. Our focus is to provide the best products with the latest technologies and to deliver a memorable experience always. We have a wonderful team at First Motors that is so committed to delivering the best at all our touch points, I am so proud of and thankful to all of them.

As we head into Ramadan, will you be launching any special deals over this period?

Certainly, Ramadan is one of the most important times of the year for us and each year we challenge ourselves to develop offerings that our customers will see as relevant and attractive. We have already prepared our Ramadan promotions and will be announcing this very soon. I would like to extend, in advance, Ramadan Kareem to everyone and wish you all the blessings of this Holy Month.

If money was no object, what would be your dream car and where would be your dream drive.

It would be the 1972 Ferrari Dino 246 GTS and my dream drive would be in the Amalfi Coast of Italy. ✤

ISLAND INSIDER

Zahra Ebrahim

Marketing Executive, The Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Residence & Spa

What do you most love about marketing, specifically in hospitality?

Marketing is a language that translates our ideas to people. Remember, the best marketing is not the same as [just] marketing. Create content, inspire, be conscious, make people think and make people understand. In light of the market conditions and many competitors, the goal is no longer only to serve the guests, but to make them happy, make them remember and it is necessary to build a strong relationship with guests and gain their trust – trust keeps them. What makes working in hospitality different is that it’s the best way to find yourself, helping people and making every moment matter by giving attention to all the details and creating memorable moments. It’s all about the experience. Something has to happen, either good or bad,

hospitality is about taking care. When service is the product, which is true of the hospitality industry, this becomes even more important.

What’s a major accomplishment you’re most proud of, business-wise, in your current role?

What makes me feel most proud is that I started working 13 years ago. My dream was to reach a position that makes me feel I have provided something for the Kingdom of Bahrain and society. It was never easy to prove my presence and leave a mark, but it was worth it. I started my career as a customer service agent. It made me want to give more and more, to collect ideas to create an unforgettable experience for the customer. The smile did not leave me when I heard the praise and the extent of customer satisfaction. It led me to love

marketing and discover my skills. The challenge, however, was to develop myself and gain experience. Today, I am proud in this position and I hope that I may even be a source of inspiration for someone. And I say, nothing is impossible and the greater the giving, the greater the appreciation and building of trust. There is no limit for imagination and creativity. Set your goals and focus on them and success will be your ally.

We know you’re a foodie! So, what’s your favourite dish or beverage across The Diplomat’s dining outlets?

This is the delicious part of my job and it is difficult to choose between a wide variety of Asian food and authentic Italian food from the hands of experts. But it’s always hard for me to resist Lobster Spaghetti at Mondo, Taste of Italy.

HOME-GROWN HOSPITALITY, INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS

Vatel is a globally renowned name in hospitality management education. In 2018, it opened its doors on the island and accepted its first set of students for its Bachelor’s degree. February 2023 witnessed the Bahrain campus proudly showcase its first crop of young hoteliers in a sparkling graduation ceremony. What makes Vatel in Bahrain unique is its attractive blend of Arab hospitality and French finesse. Whether you’re a luxurious sevenstar property or a rustic holiday house in the middle of nowhere, guest relations and servicing lie at the centre of the hotel and tourism industry. The French art of hospitality is recognised throughout the world for its quality, good taste and excellence. Blend that with a warm, big-hearted Arab welcome and you have something so exclusive.

Vatel International Business School Hotel & Tourism Management was founded in 1981 in Paris. The creators of this award-winning institution recognised the changes that were taking place in the hospitality industry. With brands going global, there was a need to change the way hotels were managed and a demand

for more people to join the industry. Right from its first school in Paris, the brand has focused on pairing theory with professional experience. In order to achieve this, each campus has a restaurant and/or hotel on campus where students can put what they have learned into practice. Today, Vatel boasts 55 campuses across 33 countries located in Europe, the USA, Asia and Africa, with 42,000 alumni worldwide. For the last 40 years, Vatel schools have been opening doors all over the world. Further, Vatel is placed on the QS World University Rankings. Most recently, the network of Vatel schools was elected as the Best Hospitality Management School under the Worldwide Hospitality Awards.

In Bahrain, Vatel operates under the patronage of the Bahrain Tourism & Exhibitions Authority, which supports the hospitality sector with infrastructure such as the new exhibition centre and beach projects. Additionally, the Bahrain Economic Development Board brings foreign investment to the Kingdom for the sector. Both these institutions need local talent and that’s where Vatel comes in. Further, they are fully committed to Bahrainisation in hospitality and creating a dynamic resource pool.

fact magazine 66 • EDUCATIONAL FOCUS
Vatel International Business School Hotel & Tourism Management, the only one of its kind in the Kingdom, celebrated the graduation of its first lot of students in a grand ceremony.

Like its other campuses, Vatel in Bahrain works closely with local hotels and events such as Bahrain International Air Show and F1. Students are provided with real-world experience, including timely internships and placements. Graduates gain at least two years of relevant work experience during their studies – international experience is part of the programme. Licensed by the Ministry of Education’s Higher Education Council, Vatel in Bahrain provides a combination of seminars, site visits, workshops, projects and visiting lecturers thus offering well-rounded learning. Further, ‘Vateliens’ graduate with a French State Level II degree, which is recognised throughout Europe. It’s worth mentioning that students learn French as part of the curriculum (on the Bahrain campus) and also have the option of studying at international Vatel campuses for a year.

Most importantly, Vatel’s success is based on five pillars: faculty members focus on forging deep ties with their students, create dynamic learning conditions, convey their expertise and knowledge, introduce the concept of proper conduct in all situations and maintain good relations with professionals working in hotel and tourism management. The direct benefits of this are enjoyed by students - many from the Bahrain campus have landed top-class jobs even before they graduated. This is a testament to over four decades of dedication to preparing younger generations around the world to build a sparkling future in international hospitality and tourism management. ✤

THE VATELIEN SPIRIT – PROUD GRADUATES SHARE THEIR EXPERIENCES

Vatelien Mahdi Husain

Hospitality has always been a value embedded in the Bahraini culture. The people of Bahrain are raised with the belief that taking care of guests and welcoming them is a merit of honour. Vatel goes a step further and equips them with professional hands-on training and knowledge. Before joining Vatel, I worked at a local restaurant. I’ve always had a genuine interest in taking care of people. While I didn’t have a clear vision of where I was headed, I soon realised that dedicating four years of my life to this programme was the best investment I could have ever made. It did not just help me to pursue what I love but created a range of career opportunities. During my course, I participated in the UNWTO (United Nations World Tourism Organization) conference, a training programme on tour guiding, a first for Bahrain, as well as interned for three international brands. I also trained in Paris for six months in my last year. These along with several other experiences have built the foundation for my first job.

Vatelien

Vatel opened my eyes to how promising a career in hospitality can be. My experience in the last four years has shown me where my passion lies. My journey has led me to a position at the prestigious Jumeirah Gulf of Bahrain Resort & Spa, even before my official graduation, where I will embark on my dream career and assert myself within this increasingly growing industry. The feeling of accomplishment that I am experiencing at this young age and at a very early stage in my career is something to be grateful for and not take for granted. I owe this feat to the unique journey I undertook with Vatel and hope that the coming years continue to be as fruitful.

Vatelien Ammar Swar

Coming from a family of hospitality professionals, I felt like this was the career path I was destined to pursue. Vatel came at the perfect time and seemed like an excellent opportunity for me to explore the field academically. Like every great journey, mine had a bumpy start. I found it difficult to assert myself within the industry and get a hang of things. However, as time passed, I had the chance to reflect on my shortcomings. I used what I learned to push myself forward and become an increasingly better version of myself. The programme offered quite the challenge, which I found to be intriguing. Especially the increased responsibility I took on during my last internship, where I was in charge of operating three different departments at Vatel and reported directly to the General Director. It was an invaluable experience and I owe it all to Vatel. I can’t wait for the next challenge!

I started my career in 2015, before joining Vatel Bahrain. Since then I have had the opportunity to work with local and international brands such as The Domain Hotel and Spa, Wyndham Grand Manama, Starbucks Reserve and The Art Hotel & Resort. I am currently at the Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay. However, during my journey with Vatel, I discovered more about the hospitality industry, developed new skills and built further connections with hoteliers and leaders alike. Being part of Vatel Bahrain was the best thing that happened to my career as a hospitality professional. Now that I am an alumnus, I will continue capitalising on the opportunities that are presented to me to become a future leader and an ambassador of my country and industry.

Henrique Antunes, Executive Chef at Mahonia talks about aspects of Bahrain that most inspire him and the culinary style of the restaurant.

You call Bahrain your home now. It’s no more, as you’ve put it, ‘just a circuit in the F1 calendar’ for you. Tell us about some of your major cultural inspirations on the island, both as a person and a chef.

Yes, Bahrain feels like home to me! As a person who loves travelling, getting to know Bahraini and Middle Eastern cultures and habits more closely is something I love. The art, the food, the religion, the history and seeing the melting pot of cultures that together create the soul of the island is inspiring and opens my mind. As a chef working in a different country, having the chance to try local food and products and understand the locals' taste is unique and challenging every day. It’s my favourite part of my job and we try to show that appreciation in the food we serve to our customers.

Please tell us more about Mahonia’s unique fine-dining culinary style.

Mahonia is a restaurant focused on serving great food and an experience that you will remember. Our menu nowadays is a balance between our previous concepts and dishes for guests who want something new, something more technical or just want to appreciate good, comforting food and enjoy the ambiance in a relaxed way. We are not a place that you visit only sometimes but one that you can come to whenever you want to feel at home and have either a comforting meal or experience a journey through something unique and refined.

Could you please describe the essence of Chef Henrique Antunes that is imbued in the food at Mahonia. My essence lies in constant change. It evolves with what I experience and what I see around me. Travelling has opened my mind to new flavours. Working at some of the best restaurants in the world, like Gaggan or Kadeau, taught me new techniques and showed me different philosophies and work methods. I am a chef, but I am also a traveller. I am an artist who appreciates art and, at the end of the day, I am also someone that enjoys eating great food filled with care, soul and flavour. I try to transmit this to people that eat my food, I want them to travel and feel that every bite is unique. My food is for everyone!

What would you say is your signature dish?

I don’t think I have a signature dish, all of them have different meanings or ideas behind them. Some are more focused on memories and others on trips, art, colours or even on the ingredient itself. In the current menu, my favourite dishes are: the Gazpacho Explosion, which is a bite inspired by traditional Portuguese and Spanish flavours; a cold tomato soup that we serve in two bowls that are shaped like stones – one black and the other white. It will transport diners to the streets of Portugal with your typical Portuguese pavement [made of stones arranged as a mosaic]. The Beef with Beetroot is our main dish with a more artistic approach. A totally monochromatic creation, in which the only colour we focus on is red. ✤

EXPLORING THE ROOTS

FACT's Sara Waddah celebrated the rich heritage of African-inspired cuisine at the Kingdom's newest restaurant and dry bar, Kula.
DINING DELIGHT •

Taking a drive down to Riffa, FACT went to explore the latest venue at RUW corner, where an exquisitely striking, vibrant and distinctive entrance was just waiting for us to step through into an alternate world.

A magnificent large elephant sculpture welcomed us before the loud bang of an African drum heralded the beginning of our culinary adventure! With hand-crafted interiors and vibrant colours everywhere I turned, stepping into Kula felt like taking a trip back to the motherland. I was loving this already. With an interior that was put together with fine attention to detail, the restaurant had been split up into different sections – each inspired by one of the magnificent wonders found around Africa. Starting with the East African country of Uganda which is known for its exquisite bamboo, The Forest is centred right in the middle of the restaurant and features plush couches for guests to relax and enjoy the atmosphere. Strolling through the restaurant, we headed towards a semi-open section where the rays of sunshine were streaming in through large windows, highlighting the incredible patterns and stonework that has been inspired by Great Zimbabwe's most enduring and impressive stone houses. It wasn't even over by then. The next stop was The Lodge, a family-friendly, intimate, carefully decorated section that even included a beautiful fireplace – radiating the Mzansi experience from central South Africa.

You could really spend hours marvelling at the different colours, cultures and attention to detail that have gone into Kula – meaning ‘Eat’ in Swahili, the official tongue of several African nations –which all came together beautifully to create an environment that allows guests to not only feel the hospitality but the warmth and love of the various wonders of the African continent, which some of us have yet to experience fully.

fact magazine 74 • DINING DELIGHT

We were seated at a magnificent stone table and got ready to explore what the kitchen had in store for us. We let the staff make the choices for us as we knew that they were the experts.

Starting us off with refreshments from their bar, our entire party was able to enjoy a drink that really spoke to our taste buds – my favourite was the Stambo, which was a refreshing mix of lychees, raspberries and bubble-gum! The bubble-gum gave the drink a fun characteristic and it felt like just the perfect combination of tasty and fresh. The Appletini was another hit – fresh, fun and the perfect pairing for our starters.

It's notable to mention that the Muranga, a creamy avocado blend, currently donates the profits of each drink to Virunga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Congo, which was really sweet to learn. It's heart-warming to know that Kula not only values African cultures but is also making sure to give back to the continent.

My curiosities about Kula had been through the roof since its opening, and so, I was on the edge of my seat with excitement as I saw our first dish come out, a Moroccan-inspired Couscous Salad. Definitely not like any other couscous salad I've had before, this one included roasted butternut squash, pomegranate jewels, homemade fried labneh balls and was finished with a light, zesty dressing that gave the entire dish a kick! Alongside the salad, we also received Moroccan Matbucha, which was a tangy combination of fresh tomato, onion and capsicum tartare all together, served with a crusty house-baked garlic baguette. Next up – Nigerian Jollof. Now, if you know anything about Jollof, you'll know that it’s a staple in West African cuisine and has its own special characteristics when cooked in Nigeria and Ghana.

I was delighted to see that Kula is one of the first restaurants in Bahrain to serve this as a sharing dish, accompanied by fried plantain and spit-roasted lamb. The rice was perfectly spiced and stewed with tomatoes and roasted bell peppers and trust me when I say we made sure nothing was left behind. Leaving West Africa and travelling to The Horn, we next got the Ethiopian Awaze Beef Tibs, which are sautéed beef cubes that have been garnished with herbs, green pepper and spiralised chilli. A true staple of Ethiopian gastronomy, we were also given bread to dip in some Niter Kibbeh, a spiced clarified butter with aromatic spices. I was truly on cloud nine floating with elation. To be honest, all the different flavours we were experiencing only made us want to try more tastes from Africa, but we were also content with saving some space for dessert. We knew that there would be a show and something very special coming up. The chitter chatter of the staff with big grins on their faces let us know we were really in for a treat. With a grand drum and dance procession that had us up on our feet with excitement and eagerness, out came the African Gold. Golden pumpkin fritters, edible gold, candied pumpkin and Madagascan vanilla ice cream sat in a deep dish. I carefully watched as it was doused with caramel sauce; it was a moment I will never forget.

Provoking all my five senses, touch and sight for the interior, hearing for the perfectly curated Spotify playlists the staff had put together and smell and taste for each item we delved into, I'm super excited to have Kula on the island, and I'm looking forward to becoming a regular for sure. ✤

IN A PICKL

Lawson Misquitta visited Pickl, the UAE-born restaurant well known for their burgers among other scrumptious items.
NEW IN TOWN •

Aburger makes a fair case for being the ideal snack or meal. Why can it exist as both of those things at the same time? Simply put, a burger can be modest and straightforward or as fancy and decadent as you like. Having a keen understanding of this school of thought is Pickl whose principle is ‘Simple. Not Basic’.

Having started from humble beginnings in 2019 as a stand-alone spot in Dubai, Pickl has since successfully expanded to several locations across the UAE.

Offering a unique, fast-casual burger experience, the restaurant chain recently opened its doors to guests in Bahrain. On a busy Wednesday afternoon, my colleague and I finally decided to check out for ourselves what the buzz is all about.

The restaurant is located in the heart of Seef District right next to Al Aali Mall. It’s hard to miss due to Pickl’s vibrant brand colours –a hot neon pink, a cool teal and a snappy white.

On entering, it immediately felt quite spacious due to the design choice of floor-to-ceiling windows on all sides that allow abundant natural light to flood the area. It is framed with grey industrial-style walls and very high ceilings acting as the ideal backdrop for the signature colour scheme that’s present across the interior. There was plenty of seating inside and a nice outdoor section.

We took our seats and were soon greeted by a server who told us about the restaurant and gave us a quick breakdown of the menu. We learned that all the team members are referred to as ‘Legends’ as they contribute towards offering customers a legendary experience.

While waiting for the food to arrive, our eyes were drawn towards the massive open kitchen. There’s something reassuring about a restaurant that is confident enough to have one. At the same time, it’s quite an entertaining sight.

It was no longer than 10 minutes before we were served our initial

fact magazine 78 • NEW IN TOWN

order. First to arrive at our table was the Double Cheeseburger and the Chicken Sando. A few bites in and we were finally in the know over what the fuss is all about. The cheeseburger comprised two chuck patties prepared in a smash style, which had perfectly seared crusts while still maintaining juicy centres. They came sandwiched between soft potato buns with Pickl’s special secret sauce. We also opted for shredded lettuce, pickles, tomatoes and American cheese to bring it all together. It was messy in a good way and delicious! The chicken sando at Pickl is not a typical one to say the least. First off, the piece of fried chicken was huge; the potato buns could barely contain it. It was crunchy, well-seasoned and tender on the inside and topped with their tasty Comeback sauce, cheese and dill pickles. Then, things took an interesting twist; Pickl serve their chicken in a range of spice options – Plain, Medium-ish, Feel the Heat, Nashville and Reaper. Not ones to shy away from some spice, my colleague and I chose Nashville. On the first bite, we could immediately taste and feel the heat of the special rub, which then built up a bit before eventually rounding out and settling in with the rest of the ingredients. This made for a delectable spicy bite, which both of us enjoyed! The burgers were accompanied with a side of crisp and seasoned Sando Fries and a plate of large freshly fried chicken tenders dusted with more of the same spicy rub. Next, we tried the plant-based Impossible Burger. The double patties were prepared similarly to a regular smash burger and had that customary charred crust but with a familiar yet different texture and flavour overall. We had it in the Bespoke by Pickl style, which came with mustard, white onions and dill pickles, served in a potato bun. A fine option for vegetarians or anyone looking to try a meat alternative. We rounded off the meal with an Ice-cream Sando for dessert. A tasty, deep-fried cinnamon sugar bun served with a hearty scoop of ice-cream. There’s a selection of flavours. We went with vanilla and it was the perfect match, so we highly recommend it! Pickl truly lives up to its principle of ‘Simple. Not Basic’ and we certainly look forward to returning soon. ✤

WEEKENDS DONE WELL

Melissa Nazareth started her weekend on a high note with the Night Brunch at Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain.
CULINARY SPOTLIGHT •

Brunches are my favourite style of dining so, when I heard about the Night Brunch at Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain, I was excited to try it. It combines the fun element of brunch with the night-time vibe of Thursday evening – the start of the weekend. My companion and I chose a corner table at Silk’s restaurant, where the brunch is hosted in addition to the Gallery Lobby Lounge. Setting the mood for the evening was the house band with lively music. A major highlight of this brunch is the beverage counter, which serves a range of specially crafted drinks. You can even try your hand at making your own. I was recommended a passion fruit-based creation, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Buffets can be tricky if you have a small appetite. My strategy is to tour all the stations first after which I shortlist items to try under each section. As I was touring, I noticed quite a variety, from a selection of premium cheeses and charcuterie to hearty meat and seafood items. There’s cultural diversity too. From Mexican tacos and Japanese sushi to Asian dumplings and Italian risotto, there was something for every palate.

We started off with the Roasted Red Snapper. It was dressed with a light and herby tomato salsa, which elevated the protein without overpowering it. The fish, flaky and moist, with a crispy skin, was clearly the hero. As I was finishing the first bite, a subtle spice kicked in, which I rather liked.

The beef brisket, slow cooked for five hours, beckoned us with a lustrous glaze. The flesh was extremely tender with the perfect ratio of fat to meat that hit the spot. The sweet and smoky barbecue sauce complemented the meaty juices. As we were savouring this dish, our ribeye steak arrived. You can choose from a wide

fact magazine 82 • CULINARY SPOTLIGHT

selection of premium cuts on display. Cooked to our preference of medium, the steak was succulent and had a sweet, umami flavour. The buffet features sauce options for both meat and fish and I briefly contemplated getting some mushroom sauce for my steak. However, I didn’t need to – such was the richness of this cut. There were pre-cooked grills too. Out of these, the fish was my favourite. It was prepared in Indian style, with a bunch of spices – a testament to the diversity of this brunch. The recurring earthy carrom seed aroma made this one a winner. At this point, I desperately needed some freshness to cut all the richness from the protein. So, I headed to the salad bar. While I was there, I caught a catchy performance by the house band –their energy was infectious. I chose the Shrimp & Watermelon Salad, which featured bouncy coral shrimp tossed together with sweet watermelon and salty feta cheese chunks on a bed of peppery arugula and cooling mint – refreshing! I also enjoyed the grilled asparagus, which was simple but flavourful. The colours at the sushi station were calling out to me. I usually stick to the rolls but was heartened to try the sashimi as it looked so fresh. The tuna was sweet as was the salmon, both offering a bite and the mighty goodness of the ocean.

Carb loyalists must explore the bread station. Of all the baked treasures on display, I particularly liked the focaccia. There were two varieties: one was baked with rosemary and the other with sundried tomatoes, which lent it the colour of a sunrise.

The bread itself was springy like a mattress, perfect to mop the tomatoey goodness of my next dish – the Tagine Lamb Bechamel. This rustic creation was a warm hug on a plate. The epitome of comfort food, it sealed the meaty flavours from the lamb under a blanket of creamy, savoury Bechamel sauce and a crust of stretchy cheese. There was a vegetarian version too. I discovered two whole counters just for dessert! There were cheesecakes, brownies, parfaits, mousse, Arabic sweets... I decided on the passion fruit panna cotta, which was creamy and had a rich vanilla flavour. This was balanced by the tarte and bitter passion fruit. You simply can’t do a Mövenpick brunch without exploring their range of ice cream flavours – I recommend the maple and walnut, and Stracciatella, a milk-based variety with shavings of chocolate. It was exciting to watch the chef make a berry flambé to go with my ice cream. However, I preferred the ice creams on their own.

Mövenpick sure knows how to do weekends well. If you want to start yours on a high note, this is the brunch you want to book. Good food, lively entertainment and a mood-boosting ambience – what more could one ask for? ✤

PARADISE CALLING

FACT experienced an extraordinary stay of four days and nights at Kandima Maldives, a unique island destination.

TRAVEL •

DHAALU ATOLL

Positioned Southwest of Sri Lanka and India, about 750 kilometres from mainland Asia, The Maldives is an archipelagic country formed by 26 natural atolls consisting of 1,192 islands.

Kandima Maldives is located in one of the most remote atolls in the Maldives, namely the Dhaalu Atoll. This farflung location is, however, accessible via a short 35-minute domestic flight from Male International Airport to the airport in Dhaalu Atoll itself.

From there, it’s a quick, yet staggeringly beautiful, 20-minute boat ride to the tropical island. Alternatively, you can take a 45-minute seaplane flight, skimming low over the reefs and lagoons of the Indian Ocean, straight to the island’s arrival jetty.

As we approached our destination, we were taken aback by the large natural lagoon and lush tropical surroundings. Stepping onto the overwater wooden jetty and warmly welcomed by the resort staff, we knew we had just landed in paradise.

KANDIMA MALDIVES

Kandima is situated on an almost three-kilometre-long island and boasts one of the largest swimming pools in all the Maldives, measuring 100 metres in length.

Couples, families, honeymooners and groups of friends are all catered for, with accommodations and activities to suit all requests and requirements. Whether you’re after adventure, relaxation, pampering, sporting activities, beautiful views or just quality time with your family or companions, Kandima is the ultimate lifestyle destination for you.

ACCOMMODATION & COMFORT

With 264 stylishly-designed villas and studios, Kandima offers accommodation to suit all guests. We were fortunate enough to experience two different offerings over the course of our stay.

OCEAN POOL VILLA

We were housed in the Ocean Pool Villa for the first two nights. These ultra-stylish villas offer the best of both worlds. With their semi-beach, semi-overwater positioning, we enjoyed both easy access to the beach and uninterrupted views of the Indian Ocean.

The overwater private deck and pool were the ultimate spot to cool off and take in the flawless nature of our surroundings. These comfortable and stylish villas have everything one could need for a relaxing holiday. Room highlights include free wi-fi, a mini bar, an in-room entertainment system complete with 40-inch LED TV and a freestanding bathtub with an ocean view.

SUNRISE BEACH VILLA WITH SWIRL POOL

For our last two nights, we got to experience the Sunrise Beach Villa with Swirl Pool. Set right on the main beachfront, these spacious villas are perfectly situated on the eastern side of the island with instant access to the white sandy beach.

In each villa of this kind, a private deck extends towards a swirl pool that offers endless views of the surrounding turquoise waters. As well as the above, there is also a semi-outdoor bathroom with a tub, a rainfall shower and comfortable day bed, ideal for simply lounging.

RESTAURANTS & CUISINE

With 10 outstanding dining options on the island, preparing an array of cuisine options, guests are simply spoilt for choice.

TRAVEL •

SMOKED BEACH

On our first night, we were treated to an upmarket dining experience at Smoked. This modern grill house is well known for its open-concept kitchen with a custom-made Parilla grill and giant homemade smoker. A wide range of dishes, including succulent steaks, smoked ribs, fresh fish and an assortment of delicious vegetarian options, are all on offer. Our orders were prepared to perfection and served to us al-fresco style at our beachside dining table. Partaking in this sumptuous cuisine under a starry night sky and listening to the waves lapping on the beach, was an occasion we will remember for many years.

SEA DRAGON

One of our favourite foodie locations on the island was the Sea Dragon. This venue offers Far Eastern fine dining at its very best. Providing a modern take on authentic Asian cuisine, including fresh sea fish and shellfish dishes, guests can select their meal from giant display tanks at the front of the restaurant. The exceptional chefs then prepare your dish to perfection, ensuring a memorable culinary experience.

BREEZE POOL BAR

We found Breeze Bar to be a great location to relax, unwind, dance and watch sunsets, as well as to socialise with other guests. A live band provides uplifting entertainment, whilst DJs ensure the party continues into the night. Cold drinks, specially crafted beverages and hookah are all available at this lively venue.

AMENITIES & ACTIVITIES

A heavenly fully-equipped spa, a sports arena, state-of-theart fitness centre, tennis court, football field, medical clinic, an art studio, one of the biggest kids’ clubs in the Maldives and a water sports centre are amongst the variety of impressive amenities on offer at this luxurious destination. Kandima is also a perfect MICE destination, and ideal location to host meetings, conferences, weddings and other lifestyle events.

AQUAHOLICS

Aquaholics is the resort’s water sports and dive centre. It offers an array of exciting activities to suit all tastes. These must-try activities include parasailing, sunset cruises, windsurfing, big game fishing, glass canoe adventures and much more. We were lucky enough to experience both the Turtle and Dolphin Quest Adventures. These expeditions involved tranquil boat rides out into open water to locate dolphins and sea turtles. Fortunate enough to spot both species, we were grateful to the resort for providing such close encounters with these magnificent creatures. Eager for some snorkelling, we also joined the Seabob experience. This is a super-quick underwater scooter that allowed us to explore greater distances, dive deeper and experience more marine life. A truly exceptional way to witness the underwater wonders of the Maldives.

ESKAPE SPA

Our relaxing and pampered holiday would not have felt complete without a visit to the peaceful Eskape Spa. This beautiful venue, with its tropical surroundings, provides the perfect place to unwind. With a range of treatments on offer, from exfoliation to healing therapies, along with excellent facilities, including an onsite steam room and a plunge pool, guests are in for a real treat. Opting for the Maldivian Ocean Dream Massage, we can certify this spa as a must-experience location that revitalises both the body and the senses.

TIME TO SAY GOODBYE

As hard as it was for us to leave Kandima and the beauty of the Maldives, we all felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude for having this once-in-a-lifetime experience. We want to thank the resort staff for their kindness, attentive service and constant smiles. You made our trip truly unforgettable! ✤

LAID-BACK TAILORING IN SEASONAL SHADES

The Spring-Summer collections from Brunello Cucinelli promise laid-back classics in artisanal fabrics and lightbringing shades to capture the essence of the season.

For men, the real protagonist is the suit. An interpreter of business elegance as much as of daily, leisure and summer dressing. Blazers and trousers worn separately also reflect the modern versatility of the suit as it adapts to the evolving needs of the day in a captivating and dynamic manner.

The calibrated softness of knitwear volumes, trousers, T-shirts and shirts boost the sense of ease and comfort of contemporary suits and of casual style alike. The knowledgeable union of natural fibres, special textures and mélange or délavé effects give depth to the colours enhancing the most lightweight fabrics. Colours brighten up to play a key role in the collection, as they spread a summery taste in a rich variety of declinations and in all categories of clothing. Ginger-hued red, salmon orange, sunflower yellow and, above all, a wide range of light blues, such as periwinkle, Oxford and ultramarine, harmoniously combine with the array of greys, blues and light beiges that represent the cornerstone of the collection.

For women, the relationship between classic and contemporary deepens, creating a new equilibrium between the functional and the visionary, the reassuring and the innovative. The collection is built around the idea of a female explorer. The highest-quality materials, artisanal workmanship and the refined, elegant, luxurious and discreet style that is distinctive to Brunello Cucinelli reinterprets functional components and inspiration from nautical and adventurer uniforms.

fact magazine 97 FASHION FOCUS •

Colour is fully centred on the distinctive heritage of Brunello Cucinelli beiges: from warm nuances to slightly greyed variants, the wide range of beiges is punctuated by the graphic touches of an intense and assured black that defines new harmonies in alternation with mirrored surfaces and metallic brushstrokes. Earth tones diffused across nautical or explorer-inspired elements and in garments dedicated to the most elegant occasions represent a clear and reassuring reference point across an eclectic and dynamic collection.

A series of delicate pastel tones complements impressions gathered on the journey: lavender, sage, water and rose alternate with natural whites to complete the mapping of the terrains of sophisticated femininity.

The collection develops in a versatile, relaxed and easy-going manner, centred on the idea of ‘fluid tailoring’, even for the most important occasions. A sartorial approach and feminine characteristics are crossed with dynamic and informal elements thanks to designs and accessories gathered whilst exploring new landscapes of femininity: stripes, rope details and nauticalinspired hats alternate with utility pockets, vegetable fibres and nuances reminiscent of the uniforms of explorers of yesteryear. ✤

BIG SCREEN

Need to Know:

Director Martin McDonagh brings back the winning team of Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson from his cult classic In Bruges and lets their characters unravel themselves in another interesting narrative. This time set on a remote island off the west coast of Ireland, two lifelong friends find themselves in an unexpected dilemma when one decides to abruptly cut ties with the other.

Director: Martin McDonagh

Cast : Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Kerry Condon, Barry Keoghan, Gary Lydon, Pat Shortt

Why Is It Worth Watching?

Martin McDonagh has a short but highly regarded list of movies under his belt, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and Seven Psychopaths to name two. Prior to these, in 2008 he put out In Bruges, a black comedydrama crime film, that was his feature-length debut and starred Farrell and Gleeson as the unexpected duo driving the story. The two of them didn't just perfectly suit their own roles in that outing but complemented each other impeccably throughout whenever they shared screentime together, almost like a cynic’s Batman and Robin if you will. Over a decade since then, The Banshees of Inisherin sees McDonagh reunite the pair on screen once again, this time in a tragi-comedy scenario. The events are set in the 1920s and follow two lifelong friends Pádraic (Farrell) and Colm (Gleeson) who find themselves at an impasse when Colm unexpectedly puts an end to their friendship. A distressed and confused Pádraic then tries his best to figure out and repair their relationship, only to be turned down at every attempt. Pádraic's repeated efforts then lead Colm to give him a unexpected ultimatum and events soon escalate, with shocking consequences.

Need to Know:

The Banshees of Inisherin The Last Of Us

The Last of Us is a gripping post-apocalyptic drama television series on HBO, that’s been created by Craig Mazin of Chernobyl fame and Neil Druckmann, creator of the highly acclaimed video game the show is adapted from.

After a global pandemic destroys civilisation, a hardened survivor takes charge of a 14-year-old girl who may prove to be humanity’s last hope.

Director: Neil Druckmann, Craig Mazin

Cast : Pedro Pascal, Bella Ramsey, Anna Torv, Nick Offerman, Gabriel Luna, Merle Dandridge

Why Is It Worth Watching?

Taking place in 2023, the show is set 20 years into a global pandemic caused by a mass fungal infection that transforms its hosts into zombie-like creatures and leads to the collapse of society and life as we know it.

The story may initially seem to be based around this major plot point as the obvious antagonist and centre of events. Instead, it chooses to focus on the people who are left occupying what remains of the world and their ways of persevering, which is at times surprising or downright shocking as the human race stares at its looming and eventual end.

In the midst of all this, the show draws our attention to a love story, not the usual romantic kind that we’re all too familiar with but something few may consider, a far more potent one – the love a parent has for their child.

Staying true to the multiple-award-winning game, the series manages to capture the astonishing depth around this dark, violent and melancholic story that highlights the best and worst parts of humanity as everything around them is falling apart or, in this case, attempting to infect and kill them. After all, despite the impending doom and death at every turn, the film is truly about the last of us.

ON THE RECORD

ALTERNATIVE/INDIE

The WAEVE

This is The WAEVE’s eponymous debut album, released via Transgressive Records. It’s a collection of 10 tracks from two unique musical voices and songwriters Graham Coxon and Rose Elinor Dougall. A couple of songs in, it’s clear that the mood of the album is sombre, dark even, as seen in the first single Can I Call You – “I'm tired of being in love, I'm sick of being in pain”. The track starts as a ballad and Graham’s guitar solo transforms it to a rock song with electronic elements. Drowning begins with a piano intro, which is reminiscent of ripples on a lake. Whether it’s deliberate or not can’t be said. However, it offers artistic imagery. Someone Up There has a different sound from most other songs in the album. It’s fast paced, for one, the successive drumbeats creating this sense of urgency. On it, Graham insists, “I don't care what you say man/I’m being watched by someone up there”. All Along stands out, with Rose’s velvety voice complementing Graham on cittern, a medieval folk lute.

Both, Graham and Rose are known for their individual styles and talent. Together, they make a promising duo and it will be interesting to see what they create in the time to come.

My 21st Century Blues

Released via Human Re Source, My 21st Century Blues is essentially a club anthem further elevated by British singer and songwriter Raye’s enigmatic vocals. A feminine voice that’s irresistible and at the same time fierce works brilliantly for the theme explored in the album –overcoming heartbreak.

On Hard Out Here , Raye resigns to the fact: “See for girls like me from the bottom of the tier/Believe that it's always been hard out here”. But she immediately follows it with: “Baby, I bounce, baby, I bounce, baby, I bounce back”.

Escapism sucker punches you when you realise that it’s the ridiculously popular TikTok sound – “The man that I love sat me down last night/And he told me that it's over, dumb decision”.

Black Mascara, a guaranteed dance floor hit, combines a sombre theme with upbeat music, creating an irony that’s hard to resist. Symbolising an undefeated spirit, it’s one of those on-loop numbers.

Flip A Switch comes as a warning to anyone daring to cross a line. Raye knows that “You can't just let your guard down and fall for someone anymore/ That's what stupid girls do” and Raye’s “been a stupid girl”. The music on this one’s groovy, with the “Ooh, oh no, oh no, no, no, no, no” making you want to play it just one more time.

GOTHIC, HORROR, MYSTERY A House With Good Bones

Sam Montgomery is anticipating a long weekend spent with her beloved mum enjoying girly nights watching TV mysteries and chatting. But her brother’s words “Mom seems off” quickly come home to roost as she finds her, usually warm and vibrant, parent in a diminished and fearful state. In the back garden, Sam discovers a jar of teeth hidden amongst the rose bushes and vultures circling overhead. Determined to find out what’s going on, her quest for the truth reveals that some secrets are better left untold.

MYSTERY, THRILLER Vera Wong's Unsolicited Advice for Murderers

Vera Wong is a lonely little old lady who lives above her forgotten tea shop in the middle of San Francisco’s Chinatown lovingly Internet stalking her Gen-Z son. Then one morning, Vera trudges downstairs to find a curious thing—a dead man in the middle of her tea shop. In his outstretched hand, a flash drive. Vera doesn’t know what comes over her, but after calling the cops like any good citizen would, she sort of . . . swipes the flash drive from the body, tucks it safely into the pocket of her apron and sets out on her own investigation to find the killer.

Entertainment At Whose Expense? Water Garden Of Yore Signing And Singing

Netflix announced its decision to change its password sharing policy. Under it, premium and standard plan subscribers will have a primary account and be able to create up to two sub-accounts for those living outside their household. However, this will come at an extra cost, which has caused quite a stir among users. In fact, the streaming giant has already rolled out the plan in some countries such as Chile and Canada. Netflix is one of the most popular global Over The Top platforms. There’s no doubt that they’ve been doing exceptionally well profits-wise. The only explanation behind their decision can be wanting to rake in higher profits, which raises a question that’s been asked by many before us – how much is enough?

Down with capitalism, we say!

Bahrain’s beloved theme park has opened after renovation and it looks gorgeous, with assigned play areas for kids, wooden bird houses, benches, a walking space and the ducks gliding across the water... However, one does miss the Water Garden that was. Especially those of us who grew up in the '90s or even the early 2000s. Millennials will agree that we’re the last generation

Rihanna’s performance at the Super Bowl took the internet by storm. The part where the singer danced to a remixed version of her hit single Rude Boy was undoubtedly a highlight. Accompanied by equally talented backing dancers, RiRi had audiences at the stadium and at home pumped to say the least. The fact that social media is awash with users recreating her dance moves is a

that enjoyed life outdoors. Those who spent their childhood in Bahrain can testify that there were limited open entertainment spaces back in the day. One of them being Water Garden where we’d go to ride the infamous Dragon Train or to dash bumper cars or simply to share popcorn packed in brown paper bags with friends. Alas! Memories are all that remain.

testament to how energetic and addictive the performance was. However, there was something that surpassed this act –Rihanna’s sign language interpreter, Justina Miles. She took the song to a whole new level with her love for not just her job but also music and dance. Videos capturing some reactions from people with hearing disabilities say it all! Interesting what doing one’s job with passion can achieve.
