That leaves May as the best month to start planning your big day – visiting venues, considering catering options and dress styles, and even applying for your leave and checking the honeymoon possibilities. We bring some key dresses and accessories and select adults-only resorts to help you fulfil your mission of having a stylish day and unforgettable memories.

Last month, one of the biggest watch exhibitions in the world, Watches and Wonders Geneva 2024, took place, and the OHLALA team went to check out the latest launches and bring them to you firsthand. We have a selection of stunning timepieces in our Haute Horlogerie pages.

The beauty scene is all about taking care of your complexion. We embarked on a pampering journey at Raffles Spa & Wellness, where we were treated to an ultimate facial using the latest skincare technology and a relaxing massage that left us feeling rejuvenated.

We had a lovely chat with Mariya Christiansen from Bliss Flower for an insight into the world of flowers and entrepreneurism. According to her, the blooming universe is very rewarding as it’s a feel-good, instant happiness kind of business. We couldn’t agree more.

We had a lovely stay at Anantara Mina Al Arab Ras Al Khaimah and dined at Hunters Room & Grill at The Westin Doha Hotel & Spa for a Latin American spread. Our test drive happened behind the wheel of the sporty yet super comfy BMW X2.

Drawing from her upbringing and diverse interests, she infuses her eponymous jewellery brand with artistry and embroidery techniques learned from her mother. The Elham capsule, named after the Arabic word for inspiration, draws creativity from nature’s beauty and Fatma’s craft influences. The collection’s eccentric colours and materials reflect Egyptian landscapes and Monet’s paintings as primary influences. DEDICATED TO TIME

Once again, OHLALA was present at one of the largest watch exhibitions in the world: Watches and Wonders Geneva 2024.

As watch and jewellery enthusiasts, Watches and Wonders Geneva is always on our radar. This year, again, we had the opportunity to walk the corridors, visit the booths and participate at In The City and Watchmaking Village events to bring you the latest launches.

The Salon was held in Geneva, Switzerland, from April 9 to 15, and the most desirable brands in the field showcased their coveted and latest designs. This edition saw the arrival of eight new brands and a record of 54 exhibiting maisons. The initial four days were reserved for professionals only, but the last three days were open for the general public for the first time.

The 2024 programme was designed for all – those starting in the industry, watch aficionados or experienced collectors. The fair is well-known for allowing visitors to explore the culture of watchmaking in depth and take an inside look at the inner workings of an industry that is fuelled by creativity, craft and passion.

The key element was innovation with a focus on young people. “We have noticed a growing interest in our industry from the younger generation, with an average age of 35 on the public days, which is extremely encouraging,” commented Matthieu Humair, CEO of the Watches and Wonders Geneva Foundation. In the new LAB, schools, start-ups and exhibiting brands presented their vision for tomorrow’s watchmaking. The auditorium hosted a series of conferences on various themes and visitors were invited to reflect on the passing moment through Luc Debraine’s photo exhibition Timekeepers.

Watches and Wonders Geneva is also the hub for setting trends for the year in the watchmaking universe. Some of them are the return to more classic and unisex proportions, an exploration of bold colours and the use of interchangeable bracelets. Grand complications continue to command prominence, while the use of métiers d’art (ornamental techniques in watchmaking) exemplifies the intersection of engineering and decorative art.

In terms of numbers, the 2024 edition had record-breaking figures. The event welcomed more than 49,000 visitors over the entire week (+14% compared to 2023). The activities, which could be reserved by the public, including product presentations, guided tours, workshops and more, were fully booked before the first day of the event. The hashtag #watchesandwonders2024 shot to the top of social networks, with an estimated reach of over 600 million people at closing time. The arrival of several celebrities also created a buzz on social media. Among them were the supermodel Gisele Bündchen, the tennis champion Coco Gauff and football idol Kylian Mbappé. The business also reached new heights, with over 10,000 retailer appointments (+25% vs 2023), 1,800 Touch & Feel press sessions and a significant increase in end-clients placing orders.

Following the Clash [Un]limited and Coussin watches, this collection continues the exploration of magic and fascination, capturing the mysteries of time in daring designs. Crafted with the expertise of the maison, this timekeeper is a masterpiece of form and function. The bracelet design blends intricate openwork with polished reflective gold, creating a bold yet elegant aesthetic. The 38mm watch features an on-demand automaton movement, allowing users to animate the dial with the push of a button, at which two butterflies gracefully return to their initial position to indicate the time, alternating at noon and midnight.

In a historic first, Dolce&Gabbana have introduced an inaugural haute couture watchmaking creation: the Monreale.

Monreale, a city in Sicily, Italy, steeped in history and artistry, now becomes synonymous with Dolce&Gabbana’s move into haute couture watchmaking. In a debut that resonates with elegance and innovation, the renowned fashion house unveils its Alta Orologeria (haute horlogerie) creations, each a testament to timeless beauty and unparalleled craftsmanship. At the heart of this horological marvel lies the Dolce&Gabbana 13.03 calibre, a Swiss-made movement meticulously crafted to pay homage to the artistry of watchmaking. This manual wristwatch, adorned with a minute repeater and flying tourbillon, transcends mere timekeeping to embody a narrative of art, excellence and passion. As I enter the opulent lobby of the hotel, I am directed to the spa entrance, where I am warmly welcomed by the Spa Director, Tina Deniz. She explains that they have a very different and unique suite concept – the only one of its kind in Doha. I am taken straight through and booked into my exquisite private suite. They celebrate a combination of ancient traditions coupled with precious ingredients and sophisticated technologies that work harmoniously to instil wellness, energise and restore you – mind, body and soul. They have partnered with some of the world’s most respected names in scientific skincare and advanced beauty. Dr Burgener Switzerland (exclusively available at Raffles Doha in Qatar), Subtle Energies and Bastien Gonzalez – all working together to produce longlasting results and a deep sense of well-being.

With nine Experience Suites for spa treatments, each of them has a beautiful private reception check-in area, where you are seated in a plush chair for the first ritual of your day while sipping on a refreshingly delicious juice blend of grape and lime and inhaling the intoxicatingly soothing scents of the products. All suites are beautifully designed to meet all your relaxation and luxury needs.

The Fitness Treatment Suites are equipped with a private gym, steam room, sauna, Jacuzzi, treatment room and a plush relaxation area with a generous

day bed and beautiful views. The suite comes with your booked treatment for a complimentary hour. You can relax for an hour using the generous amenities until your therapist comes to start your soul-quenching treatment. The Spa Suites have a bigger private space, equipped with the same amenities but on a larger scale and instead of the gym, you have an exquisite private outdoor pool for lavish relaxation. The suites also boast two quartz beds with quartz sand heated and believed to remove any negative energy. One of these extraordinary suites will make you feel like the goddess you are for three hours of utter bliss, over and above your treatment time. Not surprisingly, they won the Ohlala Spa & Wellness Awards Qatar 2023 for Best Wellness Spa and Best Spa Design.

I am treated to a Spa Suite, and my ritual begins with a soothing foot bath and a personal consultation to ensure I feel nourished physically, mentally and emotionally with a treatment plan to suit my needs. Sonia, one of their star therapists, takes me through the products she will use during my first treatment, my massage. She presents Subtle Energies curated essential oils while scrubbing and massaging my feet, giving me the opportunity to choose a blend that resonates with me. These intoxicatingly exotic essential oils are crafted by artisan distillers across India. I choose the Rasayana Detox blend. This award-winning oil blend rejuvenates and detoxifies the skin and senses. The energising synergy of oils, such as Tulasi, wild turmeric and lime, helps improve skin tone and reduce the appearance of cellulite. I fill out a questionnaire about any concerns and conditions and she leaves me to discuss my facial treatment plan with therapist Joy later.

The bathroom area has a cabinet stocked with towels, two fluffy robes, slippers in two sizes, two pairs of disposable underwear, deodorant, hair gel and setting spray and contact lens solution. On the marbled dressing table, you will find Dr Burgener Switzerland’s face and body products in generous pump action bottles, two natural fibre wooden brushes and face flannels. The sauna is next to the separate toilet cubicle and the shower area takes you to an entrance to the exquisite Hammam. As I walk in, my senses are beguiled by the scent of frankincense and sandalwood and the soft hiss of the steam as I lie down to dissolve all my woes.

I enjoy the massive bubbly Jacuzzi for a few minutes before making my way to the calm and soothing treatment area. Sonia asks me for my pressure preference and proceeds to give me a deeply relaxing full body massage for an hour, concentrating on my requested focus areas. The treatment bed is luxuriously soft and comfortable and the soft music soothes my mind into a deep sense of relaxation while Sonia’s healing hands massage my stresses away.

As she finishes her magic, Joy, my facial therapist, comes in and explains that she will be doing a skin analysis to customise my facial. She starts by measuring the level of oil, moisture and pigmentation in my skin. Miraculously, my 47-year-old skin is not as damaged as I expected, and I do not need the entire 90-minute facial that includes their exclusive Dr Burgener Switzerland cosmetic machine that uses a deep cleaning cavitation spatula to clean out pores and blackheads. She does, however, suggest using the ultrasound heads to tighten the fine lines and reduce pigmentation.

We start with a ritual of three deep breaths during which I can smell the essential oils of lavender and sweet orange. Joy then starts the facial routine with the ultrasound machine while using a conducting gel that contains collagen infused with aloe vera. It feels wonderfully cold at first and then starts warming. The ultrasound heads will have a contouring effect along with an anti-inflammatory reaction that helps reduce any puffiness. This is followed by a sensational arm and hand massage using hydrating body milk with a shea butter base. She then starts the manual facial with a cleanser. All of the products are from the exclusive Dr Burgener Switzerland range and contain floral toners. The cleanser, mask and moisturiser she uses have geranium and sweet orange, all with a powerful prebiotic base for their strong antibacterial properties. The exfoliation has an invigorating cooling effect, and Joy follows this with a nourishing mask and a satiating moisturiser.

I see immediate results on my skin. There is a reduction in the fine lines on my forehead and my skin feels deeply satiated. My mind and body are calm with a sense of harmony.

Finally, I am then treated to ginger and lemon tea and some savoury treats, sweets and fruits and their signature Katara Towers waffle with maple syrup. I lie on the luxurious bed, nibbling on my sumptuous treats while looking out at the incredible view.

This month, OHLALA chatted with Mariya Christiansen, owner of Bliss Flower in Qatar, about her entrepreneurial life and the blossoming universe.

MARIYA CHRISTIANSEN

OHLALA – How did you start in the flower business?

Mariya Christiansen – The decision to venture into the flower business with Bliss Flower was quite unexpected but also exciting. I’ve always had a passion for having my own store, and it was a toss-up between a bakery and a flower shop. When my husband received a job offer in Qatar, it presented a perfect opportunity to pursue this dream. Bliss Flower was already eyeing expansion into Qatar, especially for weddings, and when the chance to franchise with them came up, I jumped at it. So, it was a combination of personal interest and seizing the right opportunity that led me to start my journey with Bliss Flower.

OHLALA – What do you like most about working with flowers and floral designs? What are the biggest challenges?

Mariya – What I love most about working with flowers and floral designs is its inherent joy. It’s a feel-good business that has the power to make people happy and brighten their day. The sense of giving and spreading happiness through beautiful arrangements is incredibly rewarding. However, like any business, there are challenges to navigate. Ensuring consistency, quality and excellent customer care are paramount for smooth operations. In the flower industry, where products are perishable, maintaining freshness becomes a significant obstacle, especially in regions with fluctuating temperatures like ours. Despite these challenges, the satisfaction of bringing joy to our customers outweighs the hurdles we face.

OHLALA – Can you tell us how complex the process is to keep the flowers looking fresh and beautiful? Where do your flowers come from?

Mariya – Our flowers are sourced globally, ensuring a diverse selection that’s updated regularly. With bi-weekly deliveries and refrigerated storage, we maintain freshness. Our vigilant staff monitors quality daily. Educating customers about proper care is key, as each flower has unique needs for longevity.

OHLALA – Can you tell us a bit about Bliss Flower’s story? To what do you attribute the brand's success?

Mariya – The company opened in 2008 in Dubai and has expanded across UAE, KSA, Kuwait and Singapore. In 2022, it opened its doors in Qatar. The founders, Michael and Abbey, have carved themselves a solid position in the flower market in the Middle East through an eye for detail, innovation in design, implacable quality of blooms and a very creative outlook. It is a respected brand with a history and loyalty to its customers. The constantly changing designs keep the clients happy and wanting to come back for more on a regular basis, expanding the following base.

OHLALA – What advice, as an entrepreneur, would you give to someone starting their business?

Mariya – As an entrepreneur, my advice to someone starting their own business would be to expect the unexpected. No matter how experienced you are or how many ventures you’ve undertaken, managing expectations is crucial. Understand that building a successful business takes more time, resources and effort than initially anticipated. Embrace the process of learning by doing. Mistakes will inevitably occur, but you need to view them as opportunities for growth and improvement. Keep moving forward, constantly learning from your experiences and asking questions along the way. Don’t hesitate to seek help when needed, as collaboration and support can be invaluable on your entrepreneurial journey.

OHLALA – What is your favourite flower and why?

Mariya – My favourite flowers are tulips. I love their versatility; they come in a wide range of colours and can be arranged in various ways. Whether closed or open, standing tall or gently cascading –tulips always add elegance to any floral arrangement. Their robust nature makes them perfect for creating stunning vase displays, adding a touch of beauty to any space.

OHLALA – How long have you been living in Qatar and what do you like most about the country?

Mariya – I’ve been in Qatar for three years, and it already feels like home. The people are super friendly and welcoming, and the country provides everything we need for a comfortable family life.

MEET-AND-GREET SERVICE

Touching down at Dubai International on a sunny Thursday afternoon, we were warmly welcomed by the hotel’s friendly and efficient meet-and-greet service. We soon found ourselves en route to the northernmost emirate of the UAE, the accommodation itself a mere 45-minute journey from the airport.

EXQUISITE LOCATION

As we neared the eco-friendly, Thai-inspired hotel, we were captivated by the outdoor setting. The Anantara Mina Al Arab Ras Al Khaimah Resort is situated on a private golden peninsula, in a natural mangrove sanctuary. With views of the lagoon and breathtaking Arabian Gulf, along with access to pristine natural beaches and a backdrop of the majestic Hajar mountains, one could not ask for a better location to unwind, relax and explore.

AWE-INSPIRING ARCHITECTURE

As we entered the reception hall through a towering, triple-storey arch, we were greeted by the smiling faces of attentive staff members, along with the remarkable contemporary chandelier suspended from the ceiling. This masterfully designed and crafted centrepiece, inspired by the winds of the desert moving through the trees with hundreds of handblown glass baubles, appears to move in unison. With our effortless booking process lasting just two minutes, we were soon at our first-class villas.

DELUXE ACCOMMODATION

The stunning accommodation of this Anantara Resort comprises a selection of 174 exquisitely designed rooms, suites and villas, all conceived for exceptional comfort and to provide the most breathtaking views.

Fortunate enough to be in an Emirate-first, Maldives-esque Overwater Pool Villa, our stay could not have been more stimulating or comfortable.

Specially constructed to be in harmony with nature, our spacious accommodation proved the epitome of island luxury with its exclusive pool and private terrace overlooking the beautiful waters.

Must-mention room amenities include a separate living room, an impressive walk-in wardrobe and a separate tub and rain shower. Complementary high-speed wi-fi and a smart TV are also on-site. We must admit to putting the espresso machine through its paces throughout the weekend.

THE GRAND OPENING

After a late lunch, all guests made their way to the Grand Opening Party, an enchanting evening affair that offered an opportunity to mingle with investors, hotel management and fellow guests alike.

Treated as royalty, we thoroughly enjoyed this celebration of success, appreciating the speeches outlining the brand’s vision to create an ecofriendly resort that embraces, protects and promotes the local terrain, flora and fauna to benefit all.

As the night eventually drew to a close, we happily made our way to our respective rooms, grateful for our first night in these tranquil and picturesque surroundings. A better night’s sleep has never been had.

FINE-DINING

The Anantara Mina Al Arab Ras Al Khaimah Resort houses no less than six dining options. We experienced three outstanding venues, all of which proved exceptional.

LUNCH AT WAVES CAFÉ

On our first day, we lunched at Waves Café. This light-bite location offers cold-brew teas and single-origin coffees carefully sourced from all over the world. We indulged in sandwiches, wraps, bowls, soups and shakes, all made to order. We also spoilt ourselves with freshly baked pastries and some artisanal gelato.

BREAKFASTS AT SEA BREEZE

On both mornings of our stay, we were invited for breakfast at Sea Breeze, a venue with a contemporary-chic interior offering international cuisine on a mangrove-view terrace.

Looked after by meticulous servers, these breakfasts consisted of a vibrant market-style buffet complete with eggs cooked to order and some of the freshest and tastiest baked bread and pastries we’ve ever had.

GROUP DINNER AT MEKONG

On the final evening of our stay, we dined at the glamourous Mekong, a world-class restaurant offering signature dishes and favourites inspired by Anantara’s native Thailand as well as Vietnam and China. The master chefs have reinterpreted these traditional meals for the modern palate while remaining true to classic cooking techniques. My meal consisted of three equally delicious courses; however, the main course of Pad Thai Noodles demands a special mention. Truly delicious!

HOTEL EXPERIENCES

The Anantara Mina Al Arab Ras Al Khaimah Resort offers a variety of activities designed to showcase its rich natural surroundings and accessible locations. These include kayaking through natural mangroves filled with protected wildlife. Several other water-based activities are also on offer, including luxurious yachting experiences.

The nearby Jebel Jais Mountains provide further opportunities for exploration. The hotel kindly shuttled guests to the phenomenal Jais Viewing Deck Park, where we took advantage of the seven viewing decks with 12 powerful binoculars to take in the wonderful panoramic views. The fresh mountain air also proved invigorating. Perhaps the most exciting moment of the adventure was the Jais Sleder –a solar-powered toboggan mountain experience - 1,885 metres long. This novel way to experience the terrain was exhilarating, making us all feel like children again.

For the truly adventurous, there is the Jebel Jais zipline. Not only the world’s longest zipline, it also reaches speeds of up to 150km/h. Mountain hiking, hot air ballooning and desert exploration are also offered by the hotel, along with an assortment of activities for youngsters.

HOTEL AMENITIES

Amongst the multitude of amenities and services at the Anantara Mina Al Arab Ras Al Khaimah Resort are both wedding locations and conference facilities.

We were lucky enough to experience a tranquil oasis in the form of the Anantara Spa, where we were treated to the venue’s signature massage that combines Eastern and Western techniques with Anantara’s signature oil blend. After an hour of bliss, we left feeling relaxed, revitalised and ready to return to our everyday lives.

TIME TO GO

After the second night of our truly amazing stay at this uniquely beautiful hotel, it was hard to say goodbye to all our new friends and to leave such a serene and luxurious environment. Seated on our return flight, we had already agreed this was one venue we would visit again in a heartbeat.

A platter of Argentinian Chicharrón Bread with smoked paprika and hazelnut butter sets the stage for the culinary extravaganza to come. The crisp crunch of the bread gives way to the succulent richness of chicharrón, while the velvety smoothness of the butter adds a touch of indulgence to each bite.

Soon, a procession of cold and hot starters graces our table, each dish a masterpiece in its own right. The guacamole, a beloved Mexican staple, delights with its creamy texture and vibrant flavours, while the Ceviche de Langostinos Patagónicos is a dish that encapsulates the essence of Latin American coastal cuisine. Originating from the shores of Peru but reimagined with an Argentinian twist by Chef Martín, this ceviche is a testament to culinary innovation at its finest. The star of the dish is undoubtedly the Patagonian prawns; these succulent crustaceans are marinated to perfection in a vibrant concoction of lime juice, passion fruit and mango, imparting a tropical burst to each bite. One of the defining elements of this ceviche is the use of leche de tigre or tiger’s milk, a traditional Peruvian marinade renowned for its invigorating properties. Each spoonful of ceviche is a revelation, a symphony of flavours, leaving a lingering impression of culinary excellence.

The Cachapas, a Venezuelan delicacy, captivate with their delicate balance of sweet and savoury, enhanced by a medley of tantalising sauces. These golden corn cakes, crafted from tender, yellow corn, are a celebration of the land’s bounty. As we take our first bite, we are greeted by the delicate sweetness of the corn, its natural juices shining through with each mouthful. But it’s the decadent filling of molten mozzarella cheese that steals the show, oozing out with each indulgent bite. The interplay of flavours is further enhanced by the tangy notes of the Pico de Gallo, the creamy richness of the sour cream and the vibrant burst of the tomato chutney. Notably, the Salsa Tatemeda imparts a smoky taste that lingers on the palate and adds depth and complexity to the dish that is truly unparalleled. Prepared using a special cooking process that involves grilling and carbonising the ingredients before grinding them with a volcanic stone, the Salsa Tatemeda is a testament to Chef Ramón’s ingenuity and skill.

The crescendo of our dining experience arrives with the pièce de résistance: the Carnivores Platter. This culinary masterpiece is indeed a carnivore’s dream come true, boasting an impressive selection of 1,265g of meats that showcase the finest cuts from around the world. OHLALA SPENT THE DAY IN THE NEW BMW X2, A SUBCOMPACT CROSSOVER MAKING WAVES IN THE PREMIUM SUV MARKET.

BMW have long established themselves as top contenders in the high-end SUV segment, with various models proving popular throughout the world. However, it is their smallest SUV offering that’s currently receiving much of the attention.

This month, thanks to the team at BMW Qatar, OHLALA got behind the wheel of the brand’s new subcompact luxury crossover SUV, the BMW X2. Although this freshly updated model comes in all-electric options, it was the petrol-powered sDrive 18d version that we were lucky enough to experience.

DYNAMIC EXTERIOR DESIGN

Our first impression of the new X2 was that it is a sportier version of the X1, albeit with its own personality and style.

In the X2, the master crafters at BMW have managed to effortlessly combine the sturdy look and stance of a compact SUV with the athletic and attractive flair of a coupé.

Starting at the model-specific, upright front end, we found the shapely bonnet, complete with BMW badge, to bestow the X2 with a confident look. We also appreciated the state-of-the-art signature lighting, with the eye-catching matrix LED design. These impressive lights flank an almost hexagonal, pearl-gloss-chrome kidney grille, with all elements working together to create a beautiful face.

Shifting our attention to the sides, we immediately took note of the dynamically stretched body lines flowing from bonnet to boot. This feature, along with the sloping roofline, enhances the sleek and tight feel of this modern SUV. The 19-inch alloy wheels, complete with a stylish V-spoke design, are fitted under prominently flared wheel arches that underscore the vehicle’s muscular shoulders.

Focussing on the back end, the Gurney-style spoiler and eye-catching rear apron first grabbed our attention – features we felt further enhance the sporty prowess of the X2. We also agreed that the novel tail lights, showcasing dazzling geometric patterns, finish off the rear with yet another touch of class.

PREMIUM INTERIOR

Once inside the SUV, we instantly recognised the upmarket ambience exuded by the cabin, with sporty touches sprinkled throughout.

Firstly, the exceptionally comfy, multi-functional and adjustable front seats with memory function provide a commanding view of the road ahead and the perfect point from which to appreciate the magnificence of the X2’s interior. No matter where our eyes rested, they were only greeted by high-end materials and stunning finishes.

Despite being a subcompact SUV, the new X2 provides a surprising amount of headroom and general space in both the front and the rear. A panoramic sunroof lets in an abundance of natural light, adding to the roomy feel of the vehicle.

The luggage compartment provides 560 litres of storage, a capacity increased to 1,470 litres with the rear seats folded flat. This ensures the X2 is practical for both long-distance trips and daily use. The tailgate itself opens by pressing the rear BMW badge.

OUTSTANDING TECH & INFOTAINMENT

As picture-perfect as the new X2 is both inside and out, it was the SUV’s included tech that proved to be the most impressive.

The X2 presents the new BMW Operating System 9 and BMW Digital Premium. Additionally, we discovered the latest version of the BMW iDrive display and control system features QuickSelect rapid-access tech. This means super-fast processing speeds.

Packaged with the BMW Curved Display and BMW Personal Assistant, the system has been designed to operate using the touchscreen and natural language.

We admired how the slender instrument panel housing the split-screen BMW Curved Display, is joined by a ‘floating’ armrest with integral control panel. We also agreed that the centre console is amongst the best designs we have encountered, with everything perfectly placed for optimum convenience.

The BMW Operating System 9 also paves the way for a highly customisable selection of additional services, including BMW Digital Premium, allowing customers to enjoy in-car use of all the apps available in the country.

As involved as this system may sound, we found it pretty easy to navigate and soon had a solid grasp on much of what this superior setup had to offer. Other must-mention tech features of our test-drive model included the standard smartphone integration for both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a superb Harman Kardon sound system and a smartphone tray with indirect illumination and wireless charging.

POWER, PERFORMANCE & SAFETY

As one would expect from a BMW, engaging the ignition of our X2 sDrive 18d was a satisfying moment. The capable four-cylinder, BMW TwinPower Turbo petrol engine not only delivers the right sounds but a max output of 150hp and a max torque of 360Nm.

When out on the tarmac, this powerful engine coupled with a seven-speed Steptronic transmission with double clutch meant a responsive and sporty driving experience.

Although accelerating off the mark was slightly slower than expected, we discovered that once the car was up to speed, it answered the request for more power far quicker. Even at higher speeds, we established that the handling and braking were reliable and sharp.

Once we shifted the car into Sports Mode, the acceleration became far more responsive and, despite the handling loosening up slightly, we always felt in complete control of the driving experience.

Adding to the sense of security in the X2 is the range of standard safety and driver assistance systems. These include the latest Front Collision Warning system, Cruise Control with brake function, Speed Limit Info, Lane Departure Warning with lane return and Parking Assistance, including Reversing Assist Camera and Reversing Assistant. Many additional options are available upon request.

OUR VERDICT

In the X2, BMW have created yet another outstanding SUV. The interior and exterior designs, the provided tech and safety systems and the responsive performance, all showcase the brand's exceptional design and construction capabilities.
