Our dining adventures this month have taken us on quite the journey. We got a taste of Persian delights at the newly opened Golestan, indulged in Levantine flavours at Zahrat Al Fayrouz and kicked back in the beautiful outdoor setting of The Garden restaurant. STYLE AND SUBSTANCE

Mercedes-Benz’s latest G-Class AMG proved to be a powerful, upmarket, five-door SUV with oodles of style and in-car tech.

More than 45 years since the Mercedes-Benz G-Class first hit the roads, the company has released the latest generation of the SUV that features the mighty G63 AMG. Thanks to the team at Al Haddad Motors, we spent time inspecting this beautiful machine.

Distinguished Exterior

As the classic cube shape of the iconic AMG entered our vision, we caught sight of subtle styling upgrades. Firstly, the AMG crest is now featured on the bonnet and exterior mirror projections. The AMG fuel filler cap is crafted in silver chrome with black design elements, whilst the radiator grille and A-pillars have been modified. The positioning of the windows has also been slightly refined.

There is now a new AMG-specific bumper with three vertical louvres in front of the air inlets, as well as stainless-steel inserts. Standard adaptive MULTIBEAM LED headlights that illuminate the road according to the driving situation, with 84 individually controllable high-performance LEDs, have also been included. When ordering the optional AMG Exterior Carbon Fibre Package, several additional exterior design elements are upgraded. At the front end, this will include a dark chrome grille, bumper inserts, darkened headlight housings, carbon design mirror housings and a visual underride guard finished in carbon fibre. Shifting our attention to the fancy flanks, we noted the 20-inch AMG alloy wheels with their five-twin-spoke design, along with red-painted brake callipers and perforated brake disks. Various other rim options are available.

When one orders the optional AMG Exterior Carbon Fibre Package, the body will also showcase new inserts in the exterior protective trim. The spare wheel cover is finished in carbon fibre and will include a wheel ring of black Magno/metallic. The backend will feature a carbon fibre-finished visual underride guard and darkened indicators. An extensive range of exterior colour options is available.

Swanky Interior

When examining a luxury SUV, our main criteria include an abundance of space, comfort, class and natural light. The new G63 AMG confidently ticks all these boxes.

After keyless entry, once inside, the daylight streaming through the eight windows and sliding sunroof meant we could easily pick up the vehicle’s finer internal details. As evening arrived, the ambient lighting took over, providing a soothing environment. The cabin featured high-end materials, brushed metal accents and unique details throughout. These touches included an instrument panel in two-tone Nappa leather. We were captivated by the round AMG DRIVE UNIT steering wheel buttons with brilliant displays and intuitive operation. When out and about, we were able to control AMG-specific driving functions and all drive programmes without taking our hands from the multi-function steering wheel. Space-wise, even those on the tall side will experience ample head, shoulder and leg room no matter where they are seated. And all seating is both supportive and comfortable.

For those needing to move cargo, the vehicle offers more than 1,000 litres in the luggage area, a space easily increased to almost 2,000 litres with the 60/40 split rear seating folded. Adding to the practical nature is a stainless-steel rear loading sill protection strip.

As with the exterior, the interior colour range for new G-class models features more shade options than ever before.

Outstanding Tech

Mercedes-Benz has ensured its latest SUV is jam-packed with leading-edge technology, including the updated MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) infotainment system and a fully digital instrument cluster. We gained access through the 12.3-inch driver and multimedia displays featuring touch control and voice activation. The 360° camera is now situated in the front brush guard, an improved position, enabling it to provide better imagery to the display.

Certain actions can now be triggered without the ‘Hey Mercedes’ keyword and around 20 new voice commands were created exclusively for the new G-Class.

Thanks to the smartphone integration, we connected to the system via Android Auto Wireless and Apple CarPlay. There are USB ports that also enable connections to other mobile devices. Another great inclusion is the wireless charging system for mobile devices in the front.

Later, we were impressed by the MBUX Augmented Reality for Navigation, also fitted as standard. This system superimposes graphical navigation and traffic information onto live images on the central multimedia display to help drivers find their way even in complex traffic situations. At traffic lights, it displays the current light colour.

Amongst the many other fantastic features of the AMG is the standard Burmester 3D Surround Sound System. It features the immersive Dolby Atmos audio experience, which gives music more space, clarity and depth, turning the G63 into a state-of-theart concert hall on wheels. We noticed an additional illuminated speaker integrated into the headliner. The amplifier features six other channels that enable better frequency separation and sound positioning. A truly phenomenal sound experience.

Imposing Power & Performance

Mercedes-Benz has ensured that new generation G-Class owners have a little more power to play with. As we started the engine and applied pressure to the accelerator, we knew we were handling a serious piece of automotive equipment.

The new AMG G63 is powered by the tried and tested handcrafted AMG 4.0L V8 biturbo engine. The monster motor produces 577hp and 627lb-ft of torque. The engine is electrified with a 48-volt onboard electrical system and an integrated starter generator (ISG), which provides support at lower engine speeds with an additional 20hp and 148lb-ft.

Once at our test site, we achieved 0–100km/h in 4.4 seconds! This time would challenge many sports cars on the market today. To tame this beautiful beast, Mercedes-Benz has enforced an electronically capped top speed of 220km/h. Probably a wise decision.

This all-new G-Class SUV is packing some serious power, cuttingedge technology and unmistakable performanceorientated design details both inside and out.”

Another impressive aspect of the G63’s driving performance is the noise reduction. Thanks to the redesigned windows and upgraded seal, not only are the aerodynamics of this luxury SUV improved, but we enjoyed a far quieter ride. We must mention the vehicle’s hydraulic active suspension system, that is variable between comfort and sport, along with the overall stability control. Despite the G63 being a top-heavy vehicle, we felt glued to the road, even when cornering at decent speeds. It was, however, the off-road experience that impressed us most. Along with the five AMG DYNAMIC SELECT programmes for onroad use – Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport+ and Individual – three off-road drive programmes are also available, namely Sand, Trail and Rock. Two additional off-road driving modes come as part of the optional AMG Offroad Package PRO. AMG Traction PRO generates maximum traction in the Rock and Sand programmes using wheel-selective braking torque control depending on the road surface, whilst AMG Active Balance Control supplements the functions of the AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL suspension in all three off-road drive options.

Superior Safety Systems

It was no surprise that Mercedes-Benz has included a full suite of driver assistance and safety systems. These include Active Lane Keeping Assist, Blind Spot Assist, Active Distance Assist, Active Steering Assist, Parking Assist, a Parking Package with a 360° camera, an Exit Warning Function, a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System and multiple airbags, to name but a few.

Our Verdict

If at all possible, go and try this SUV! ✤

THE ULTIMATE TOP-DOWN DRIVING

Aston Martin has introduced the new Vantage Roadster, a convertible stablemate of the world-beating Vantage Coupe.

Powered by the Aston Martin 4.0-litre V8 twin-turbo engine, delivering 665PS/800Nm, Vantage Roadster brings all the classleading performance, dynamic sensations and visual excitement of the coupe, with an additional dimension of top-down freedom and thrills for those addicted to open air motoring.

Engineering

With a total of 665PS and an incredible 800Nm of torque running through an eight-speed paddle-shift transmission, the Vantage Roadster combines explosive performance (0-96km/h in 3.5 seconds with a top speed of 325km/h) and state-of-theart technology within the classic, front engine, rear-wheel drive configuration adored by those who simply love to drive. Featuring race-inspired unequal length double wishbones at the front, a multi-link rear axle, coil springs and Bilstein DTX adaptive dampers (with a bespoke tune), along with a non-isolated steering column, Vantage Roadster provides the precision, balance, poise and, above all, the confidence that are the unmistakable hallmarks of the truly great high performance driver’s car.

Michelin Pilot Sport S 5 tyres, specially developed by Michelin and tuned by Aston Martin, with a compound tailored to the specific requirements of the Vantage, provide not just superlative grip in both dry and wet conditions but also outstanding steering feel. The roof, which can be opened or closed at up to 50km/h, comes in ‘Z-fold’ configuration, which is both faster and lighter than a traditional ‘K-fold’ and removes the requirement for a tonneau cover, further saving weight and lowering the centre of gravity.

Design

It was essential that all the visceral impact and beauty of the Vantage Coupe was retained for the Vantage Roadster, and that

it should retain its stunning lines whether the roof is in its raised or lowered position. The dramatically angled windscreen joins with the car’s high waistline to create a proportionally perfect thoroughbred sports car profile.

With a spectacular canvas to create a sporting masterpiece, three new paint colours – Iridescent Sapphire, Satin Iridescent Sapphire and Bronze Flare – have been added to the paint palette, while the Vantage Roadster’s roof can be specified in black, red, blue or black and silver. A selection of painted liveries comes in a choice of 21 complementary colours. There are four 21-inch wheel styles, available in a range of finishes, behind which can be seen one of seven different colour choices of brake calipers.

Like all Aston Martin models, Vantage customers can explore endless bespoke and customisation possibilities via the Q by Aston Martin personalisation service.

Vantage Roadster is the latest model to feature Aston Martin’s next-generation infotainment. It combines a fully integrated multiscreen system with full online connectivity, featuring 10.25-inch Pure Black touchscreen technology with full capacitive single and multi-finger gesture control. Touchscreen commands remain balanced with the tactility of physical switches, with buttons retained for the key mechanical operations of gear selection, drive selection, heating and ventilation. There are also control switches for numerous other functions ensuring the most used controls can be operated intuitively and without the need to take your eyes off the road. Supplemented by a new Aston Martin customer connectivity app which supports iOS and Android devices, it allows interaction, control and feedback via the user’s personal device. ✤

THE FUTURE OF DRIVING

With its recent debut at Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2025 in Las Vegas, BMW’s Panoramic iDrive system brings a new level of personalisation and intuitive operation to upcoming models.

The BMW Group has taken in-car technology into a new era with its latest innovation, the BMW Panoramic iDrive, powered by the new Operating System X, an intelligent software platform designed to improve personalisation and digital functionality. This new holistic system will be introduced across all BMW models from the end of 2025, starting with the first seriesproduced Neue Klasse model.

The new technology merges four central elements into a unique display and operating concept. The BMW Panoramic Vision, a Head-Up Display concept, newly developed by BMW for projecting content, reflects visible information to all occupants, with key driving information projected directly into the driver's line of sight. The optional BMW 3D Head-Up Display shows integrated navigation and automated driving information, with content presented in a neatly coordinated way. A newly designed central display with matrix backlight technology, features an updated menu structure with QuickSelect, offering seamless touch control and convenient operation. The new multifunction steering wheel with

illuminated haptic buttons provides another layer of interaction, ensuring drivers can access functions without distraction. BMW’s new Operating System X also supports advanced features, such as the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, which responds to voice commands and now integrates Large Language Models for more natural interactions. The system learns user behaviour, making proactive suggestions for settings and drive modes. The BMW Panoramic iDrive always gives the driver the right information in the right place and at the right time, reinterpreting BMW’s customary ‘hands on the wheel, eyes on the road’ approach. ✤

In Conversation with… Ahmed Atef

An impressive hospitality career with more than 28 years of experience, Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay’s Commercial Director has spent almost 18 years with the brand in various countries. He talks about the island’s biggest draw as a destination, top qualities to succeed in sales and what gets his adrenaline pumping.

What makes Bahrain and Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay a standout destination?

Bahrain has great potential to be discovered by international travellers. The island preserves its authentic identity, while perfectly blending traditional and modern elements. The warm hospitality of Bahraini people is the biggest draw. The opportunity for travellers to engage with locals and truly experience the culture is invaluable. Additionally, the high level of education on the island is appreciated by visitors, especially as they interact with local people. With its cleanliness, safety and modernity, Bahrain caters to all types of travellers, whether they are here for leisure or business. It’s important to focus on capturing the interest of international visitors from diverse markets and continue promoting our destination through strong collaboration between Bahrain Tourism & Exhibitions Authority, hotels and other tourism professionals.

Speaking of Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay, it is a destination within a destination. Located on its own island and surrounded by lush gardens, it offers privacy and exclusivity, while remaining well-connected to the city, as it's in the heart of Bahrain. It's a paradise for families and children, thanks to its family-friendly facilities. Whether you're looking for a romantic escape or a wellness retreat, we have the perfect options. With both indoor and outdoor event spaces and world-class dining options, we cater to all needs, whether guests are visiting for business or leisure. Most importantly, our team, with members' genuine hospitality, makes all the difference. Our team members pay exceptional attention to detail and provide personalised service, while being their authentic selves. This is why a high percentage of our guests are repeat visitors.

What top three qualities should one have to be in sales?

In my opinion, adaptability, resilience and empathy are the top three qualities for someone to succeed in sales. Adaptability is crucial, as you need to adjust your approach based on different markets and client demands. Resilience is equally important because sales can be unpredictable and you must always be ready for challenges, thinking of alternative options and solutions. Lastly, empathy is essential. Understanding and anticipating your client's needs and expectations is key to building a genuine relationship.

If you weren’t in the hospitality industry, what would your dream job be?

Honestly, I can’t imagine myself doing anything else. I love hospitality and I enjoy engaging with people. Even if I weren’t a hotelier, I would still be involved in a hospitalityrelated business.

What is your go-to strategy for dealing with stress?

I love sports. Working out is the best way for me to release stress and pressure. I also enjoy spending quality time with my family and friends.

What's something most people don't know about you?

I love adrenaline! I’ve done bungee jumping and skydiving. In fact, I went skydiving twice on the same day last year. I even jumped from above the pyramids in my hometown, Cairo. It was one of the most unforgettable and exhilarating experiences of my life! ✤

ISLAND INSIDER

What is Golden Grass jewellery?

It is biojewellery made from a special material called ‘golden grass’, which is a naturally golden-coloured grass found only in the central part of Brazil. Due to its golden hue, local artisans transform the plant stem into an eco-friendly, selfsustainable handmade accessory, creating unique designs by adding gold plated metal and gemstones. These items often include earrings, necklaces, bracelets, rings and more. They are popular for their natural beauty and have become an important source of income for the original Brazilian tribes that reside in this part of the country.

What made you decide to set up this business in Bahrain?

I am originally from Brazil, so while on vacation, I got to know this amazing product and decided to investigate its origin. I was

happily surprised to learn that not only was the plant protected by law, which makes its commercialisation sustainable, but it gave me the opportunity to tell a story that has transformed so many lives. Gold is a sought-after colour in the Middle East and its unique designs were very well accepted in Bahrain. I noticed that I was not only selling these handmade unique pieces but also working to multiply their sales, while promoting their story. The more I told how these plants are harvested, treated, designed and transformed into biojewellery, the more I sold. I was then able to help so many more artisans in Brazil that were limited to selling their pieces locally before. In less than five years, I sold more than 7,000 pieces, so you can only imagine the impact that Bahrain has caused and how happy it makes me to be part of this movement.

What are your plans for the future of the business?

My plans are to display/sell my biojewellery in more stores throughout Bahrain and export to other GCC countries. My longterm goal is to be able to sell worldwide and continue to expand my business. I would like to train Bahraini students to develop golden grass jewellery in other areas of the globe, maintaining its sustainability and price fairness. As we develop brand ambassadors and inspire younger entrepreneurs, we purchase more from Brazilian artisans and we create a network of growth in all aspects. It’s a win-win process and, in the end, our clients take home a beautiful accessory to wear, spreading the stories that they once heard me tell.

GREECE ON A PLATE

Passionate about his native Greek cuisine, Head Chef Antonios Chasanos of Astéria restaurant adds a modern twist to classic favourites. He dishes up insights on a unique ingredient, rewarding moments and his signature dish from the kitchen.

You've worked in kitchens across the world, from Mykonos to Chicago and the Maldives. Is there a particular city that has left a lasting impression on your cooking style?

All the cities and restaurants I've worked at left an impression on my cooking style and shaped my character as a professional. If I had to choose one, it’s likely to be a place with a unique food culture, like Mykonos, which has had a big influence on my cooking style. The freshness of Mediterranean ingredients, with a focus on seafood and simple but bold flavours, is a foundation for Greek cuisine.

Your motto is all about loving what you do and giving your maximum effort. What’s the most challenging or rewarding moment you’ve experienced in the kitchen?

The most rewarding moment for me in the kitchen is when everything comes together perfectly after a lot of hard work, especially when you try to create and introduce something new in a completely new environment with a completely new audience. The moment when I see the dishes come out just right and the guests enjoying them, makes the whole experience feel worthwhile. If I had to choose one moment that felt challenging from my overall experience until now, it would be the time I was working on St Barths, a tiny island in the Caribbean, where everything was challenging, in terms of finding the right ingredients to present proper Mediterranean philosophy and taste.

You're bringing a modern twist and new techniques to Greek cuisine. What’s one unexpected ingredient or method you've incorporated into a classic Greek dish?

One unexpected ingredient I’ve brought into a classic Greek

dish is tamarind paste. I love using tamarind to add depth and acidity to the traditional Greek-style grilled fresh fish. Instead of just relying on lemon oil and herbs, I blend a little tamarind paste into slow-cooked onion and garlic to make a marinade. It creates a rich, savoury complexity that still honours the freshness and tradition.

In terms of technique, I’ve been experimenting with sous vide cooking for meats like beef. Traditionally, it is roasted or grilled but sous vide allows for perfect, even cooking and keeps the meat incredibly tender and juicy. It’s a modern approach that still respects the heartiness of Greek cuisine.

Your menu at Astéria highlights classic Greek dishes with a difference. If you had to choose just one signature dish that best represents your vision, which would it be and why?

If I had to choose one signature dish, it would likely be our Seabass Kakavia. This dish combines tradition with innovation, using sous vide fish fillet infused with aromatic herbs and combined with fish velouté, but with a twist. We take the classic preparation of fish kakavia with vegetables and herbs cooked in a pot and elevate it by incorporating modern flavours like saffron and a hint of citrus zest to brighten the richness of the soup.

The reason I’d choose this dish is that it embodies our philosophy of honouring traditional Greek flavours, while adding a layer of creativity and refinement. It's flavourful and comforting, yet unexpected in how we layer the ingredients and bring new tastes to the table. It’s a great example of the past meeting the present in a single, memorable dish. ✤

PERSIAN DELIGHTS

Liz O’Reilly took a journey through Persian culinary heritage on a trip to the newly opened Golestan.

Avisit to the newly refurbished Sheraton Bahrain Hotel was high on my list, as I was eager to see the changes. So, when an invitation came to check out the just opened Golestan Persian Grill, I jumped at the chance.

Heading through the hotel lobby, I was already impressed with the sense of space and luxury and, once inside, I was immediately struck by a sense of quiet opulence with Persian royal blue featuring strongly, yet unobtrusively, in the décor. Directly opposite the entrance, an open half kitchen revealed a display of decorative brass cooking pots, alongside chefs kneading and oven baking wonderfully aromatic breads.

The seating, with intricate floral patterns on a cream linen background, was plush and comfortable and the blue elements continued throughout, from decorative peacock-style tiling on the base of the kitchen counter to vases and more.

One side of the restaurant is comprised of a wall of windows welcoming abundant natural light and giving access to a comfortable terrace for outside dining. At the edge of the terrace, the hotel’s glittering blue pool adds to the atmosphere and provides the feeling of being in a private playground surrounded by the neighbouring high-rise buildings.

The first thing to arrive at the table was a deliciously sweet, dark and rich pomegranate juice, the perfect accompaniment to the traditional Persian appetiser plate of freshly baked bread, with crispy edges and fluffy middle, served with the classic accompaniments of apricot jam, feta with herbs, crunchy walnuts and green leaves. Restaurant Manager Yasser suggested we should try the jam and cheese in unison and it was a fabulous combination of sweet and salty, made all the better with a sprinkling of crunchy walnut.

Off to an excellent start, I was delighted to see a range of mezzes heading our way. I love these little tasting dishes and am often tempted to skip the main courses in favour of eating my fill of the starters. I have to admit, this was one of those occasions!

I started with the Zeytoon Parvade – green olives, walnuts, pomegranate syrup and garlic – since it was a dish I’d not encountered before. The firm, juicy olives had taken on the flavour of the marination without losing their briny tang and the combination of the fruits and nuts made for a satisfyingly chunky bite.

Koofteh Gehlgheli – slow cooked meatballs with lentils, dried apricot, walnuts and fresh herbs – were also new to me, though I have eaten variations of the dish many times. The delicate mix of apricot and herbs gave the meatballs a great sweet and tart mix and the addition of lentils led to a deeply comforting (and super filling) texture.

Salad Labu Va Anar – beetroot, pomegranate and cheese salad with herbs – was definitely one of my favourites and had much more going on than the listed ingredients. The piquancy of sliced, high-quality olives beautifully tempered the sweetness of the beets and pomegranate arils and coupled with the sharp tang of the crumbled feta, this just tasted like more.

We tried several other exemplary mezze dishes, of which Mast-o Khiar – yoghurt, cucumber, walnuts, raisins and rose petals – was possibly my dish of the day. A simple combination that’s common in various forms in cuisines from Indian to Greek, I honestly

wasn’t expecting much from this unassuming dish – though the rose petals and nuts sprinkled atop the creamy yoghurt did look exceptionally pretty. But, oh my word, one mouthful and I was sold. The yoghurt, sweet without even a hint of sourness, beautifully complemented the delicate rose flavour and the nutty crunch gave an excellent toothiness.

It was time for the mains and first up was Mahi Shekampor – sea bass stuffed with walnuts, aromatic herbs, garlic and pomegranate sauce. The fish arrived at the table whole and Yasser made a great show of serving us the boneless meat, along with generous helpings of the tasty stuffing. The meat was perfectly cooked, flaky without being dry and wonderfully satisfying, it’s delicate flavour drawn out by the herby goodness of the stuffing.

Baghali Polow Ba Mihcheh was a large, braised lamb shank, so well rendered that the meat literally fell from the bone. The accompanying sauce made the rich sweetness of the lamb dance and all at our table were suitably impressed.

And, of course, one cannot visit a Persian restaurant without trying a mixed grill. It’s a combination dish for which the country is rightly famed and one that Chef Mohsen has mastered to absolute perfection.

We were served an incredibly generous platter of kebabs and

chops – marinated chicken, lamb, kofta and beef, all of which were amazing. This dish really is a meat lover’s dream but, to be honest, could be eaten without anything else, as it is a huge portion – all the better for us though as we each took some home! Last but very definitely not least, came the desserts. And though we were full, we simply could not resist.

Damp Shokolati – homemade dark chocolate raspberry truffles – oh, be still my beating heart! Crisp, rich, high-cocoa content chocolate in a bombe with a sweet, gooey raspberry centre that literally made my taste buds sing – Valentine’s Day’s is coming, in case anyone wants to win my affections.

And Brulee Zaferan – saffron crème brûlée – had myself and my dining companion battling over the last spoonful. This creamy custard with its glass-like burnt sugar topping, is always my ‘go to’. Add in the subtle luxury of saffron and it’s a surefire winner. I can safely say the new Golestan is every bit as good as its predecessor, perhaps even better. But, don’t take my word for it. Go try it yourself, you’ll be glad you did. ✤

MAGIC ON A PLATE

A quick and delightful culinary trip to the Levant is what Bushra Hakim experienced at Zahrat Al Fayrouz at Jumeirah Gulf of Bahrain.

It’s not every day you feel like you’re stepping into a storybook. But that’s exactly how it felt when I arrived at Zahrat Al Fayrouz, tucked away in the grand Jumeirah Gulf of Bahrain. The purpose of my visit was to try out its newly launched extended menu, a much-anticipated addition that promised to show the finest of Lebanese cuisine. After marvelling at the sprawling grandeur of the building, I found myself descending from the opulent lobby to the basement, wondering what awaited below. Little did I know I was about to be transported into a magical dream.

The ambience is a beautiful symphony of design elements: rattan details, jewel-toned cushions, intricate lattice screens and golden chandeliers that cast a soft, enchanting glow. Blue accents run through the space, giving it a tranquil yet luxurious feel. Overhead, the ceilings are adorned with oriental rugs, unlike anything I’ve ever seen before. Fairouz’s timeless music, playing gently in the background, completes the spellbinding vibe. The outdoor area, perfect for hookah under the stars, tempted me but the chill of the evening led me to a cosy indoor table surrounded by stunning décor.

Of course, the magic truly began when the food arrived. First up was the restaurant's signature drink, Fayrouz Passion. I was immediately enchanted by its beautiful turquoise hue. Made out of homemade grapefruit syrup and passion fruit, it was sweet yet tart, light, refreshing and paired well with the plates that followed. The first dish from the cold mezze to arrive was a unique twist on the classic Muhammara. It was transformed into neat little balls of walnut and chilli paste, coated with crushed walnuts and

placed atop slices of cucumber. The freshness of the cucumber paired beautifully with the creamy, nutty muhammara, offering a creative start to the meal. The Labneh W Makdous was equally special. The labneh itself was smooth and fresh but the pickled eggplants stuffed with walnuts and garlic took the dish to a whole new level. Slightly sour, with a delightful texture from the nuts, it was light yet deeply satisfying.

The Hummus Beiruti also deserves a mention. It wasn’t the hummus I grew up eating – it was better. Creamy, nutty and brightened with lemon, cumin and parsley, it had layers of flavour that surprised me. But if I had to crown a winner from the mezze, it might just be the Kibbeh Nayyeh. Who knew raw beef could taste so delicate? It was rich and creamy, with a slight sweetness and tang that kept me coming back for more.

Everything was complemented by freshly baked pita bread, which deserves a special mention. Warm, soft and pillowy, it was the perfect vessel for scooping up the mezze and was, quite frankly, irresistible. All this was enjoyed with a side of Fayrouz Salad.

As if that wasn’t enough, the Mixed Falafel Platter arrived. Now, I’ve eaten my fair share of falafel, but these were special. Three kinds – one stuffed with onions and sumac, another with cheese and the classic version. They were perfectly crispy on the outside, soft yet grainy on the inside and somehow not greasy at all. The onion-sumac falafel had a tangy kick, while the cheese-stuffed one was creamy and indulgent. I could’ve eaten an entire platter of these alone!

Then came the Chicken Shawarma Fatteh, and let me tell you,

this dish was comfort food on another level. The crispy fried bread soaked in creamy yogurt and tahini was already a win but add the perfectly seasoned shawarma chicken and bursts of freshness from the pomegranate seeds, and you’ve got magic on a plate. It was a symphony of textures – crunchy, creamy and juicy all at once.

By the time the main courses arrived, I was convinced nothing could top what I’d already tasted. I was wrong. The Kebab Roll was genius. Imagine a soft, tender beef kebab encased in bread that resembled a fatayer, with gooey mozzarella cheese hiding inside. It was hearty, cheesy and just indulgent enough without being heavy. The side of fries was a simple yet satisfying addition. The Hamour Siyadiyeh, on the other hand, felt like tradition brought to life. The fish was fresh and flaky, with a light batter that didn’t overpower its delicate taste. The Siyadiyeh rice was the real star here – fragrant with Arabic spices, topped with fried onions and crunchy nuts. It was comforting, nostalgic and everything I love about Middle Eastern food. The parsley-tahina sauce on the side added just the right amount of brightness. As full as I was, dessert was impossible to resist. The Nammoura & Ice Cream was the kind of dish that makes you close your eyes with every bite – the cake was soft and crumbly on the inside, with crispy edges and a gentle sweetness that wasn’t overpowering. Paired with vanilla ice cream, it was the perfect balance of warm and cold. The Riz Bil Halib (rice pudding) was equally delightful topped with coconut flakes – it was smooth, creamy and moderately sweet, with the pistachios adding a lovely crunch.

Every dish we tried, no matter how generous, felt light and fresh – an unmistakable sign of culinary excellence. If you’re craving a nostalgic taste of Levantine cuisine or simply seeking an escape into a magical dining experience, Zahrat Al Fayrouz deserves a top spot on your list. ✤

A BAHRAINI GARDEN OASIS

From a medley of Arabic culinary delights amidst a stunning outdoor setting to impeccable service, Amira Ragab experienced an enjoyable visit to The Garden restaurant.

With Bahrain's delightful weather, there's no more perfect time to enjoy the outdoors. And what better setting than The Garden at Address Beach Resort Bahrain? This tranquil al fresco haven, with its lush greenery and inviting beachfront views, provides the perfect backdrop for a memorable dining experience.

My friend and I recently lunched there, and with the newly opened Muharraq Ring Road, the journey from Manama to Marassi was a breeze. From the warm welcome to the attentive service, every detail contributed to a truly special occasion.

The stylish seating arrangement, featuring plush sofas and armchairs around low tables, creates an inviting atmosphere, ideal for relaxed dining and casual gatherings. Lush planters and trees surround the seating area, enhancing privacy and creating a serene oasis. The gentle melodies of Indian myna birds added a charming soundtrack to our meal. Even The Garden's all-new open kitchen, a fascinating spectacle of oven-baked delights and dough-kneading artistry, added to the overall ambience.

We began with refreshing mocktails; my friend savoured a passion fruit mojito (sweet and utterly delightful), while I opted for something lighter and less sweet to complement the beachside setting, a concoction dubbed Fun on the Beach.

Chef Gaurang Dilip greeted us personally, providing a brief introduction to the menu, expertly crafted by Executive Chef Nicolas Herbault. Our knowledgeable server then proficiently

guided us through the culinary journey.

A selection of cold mezze arrived, with each dish meticulously described. The Zaalouk dip – a vibrant blend of eggplant, tomatoes, olive oil, lemon juice, garlic and cayenne pepper – was flavourful, tangy and almost sweet.

The Persian labneh dip, a creamy yogurt infused with cucumber, walnuts, raisins, mint and rose petals, was a particular revelation; the raisins and rose petals added an unexpected and delightful complexity – both were served with freshly baked Arabic bread. For our salads, I chose the Fattoush – a crunchy, perfectly lemony delight with generous chunks of cherry tomatoes, cucumber, onion, green apple, pomegranate, lettuce, spring onions, radish, crispy pita bread and sumac. My companion opted for the hearty freekeh salad with grilled halloumi. I couldn't resist sharing a little taste; the combination of grilled halloumi, creamy avocado, freekeh, juicy pomegranate arils and arugula was heavenly. Next, we indulged in the sizzling garlic prawns, a colourful medley of green, yellow and red peppers, caramelised onions and chilli flakes, all tossed in olive oil. The prawns were succulent and satisfying. Intrigued by the beef fajitas – an unexpected addition to an Arabic menu – we were pleasantly surprised by their tenderness and flavour, perfectly complemented by pico de gallo, sour cream and avocado. The star of the show was the Turkish Spiced Lamb Pide. The perfectly baked dough, flawlessly marinated lamb and the harmonious blend of onion, chilli and tomato were simply divine. The crowning glory, however, was the sunny-side-up egg. Already sliced for easy sharing,

we happily dipped the pide pieces into the runny yolk. Our next tasting adventure led us to the Oriental Chicken Pizza, featuring cream cheese amongst its toppings. The heartwarming dough, marinated chicken, caramelised onions, marinara sauce and fresh mushrooms were excellent, but the addition of cream cheese mixed with crushed garlic and parsley was a stroke of genius – a truly unique Arabic twist that elevated the pizza to a whole new level. For a lighter option, my friend enjoyed the baked halloumi sandwich, served with za'atar pesto and accompanied by spicy mayonnaise, arugula salad and sour cream. And of course, no meal is complete without dessert. We were treated to a refreshing mango sorbet, artfully presented with watermelon, mixed berries, granola and mandarin segments – a truly delightful conclusion. And, being a restaurant that serves both international and Arabic speciality dishes, we couldn't resist the Umm Ali – a rich, oven-baked puff pastry with a creamy, rose water-infused custard, topped with toasted almonds, pistachios and rose petals. As evening approached, it had become just a little chilly and this was the perfect comfort food winter warmer to accompany the weather. The desserts provided the perfect ending to an unforgettable experience. The Garden at Address Beach Resort Bahrain is the ideal destination for an intimate sunset dinner or a sophisticated afternoon gathering – perfect for any occasion. ✤

A GRAND BRUNCH

For an indulgent afternoon of great food, fun and entertainment, Apple Sharma headed to Choices Restaurant & Terrace at The Art Hotel & Resort Amwaj Islands to experience its spectacular Friday Brunch.

For a little island like ours, brunch is practically a tradition. Every Friday, hotels and restaurants beckon foodies to tuck into scrumptious spreads like there’s no tomorrow. That’s exactly what my companion and I did when we decided to enjoy our first outing of the new year at Choices for its Grand Friday Brunch.

Being based in Amwaj Islands, we didn’t have to venture far (another plus), as we happily trotted into the restaurant, where we were warmly greeted by the staff and ushered to our table.

The stylish restaurant is divided into two areas; the quieter, intimate front section is the starting point of the brunch, home to a variety of cloche-covered dishes, a fantastic cheese and salad station, as well as a juice and smoothie bar. A few short steps lead you to a bigger, more lively area, where a huge tree structure takes pride of place in the centre, with uplighters and hanging fairy lights illuminating the tree canopy. Around this main focal point, various tables are decked out in pristine white tablecloths with red runners and decorative floral displays.

As we took our seats, I was struck by the energetic and inviting ambience of the place, with large floor-to-ceiling windows flooding it with bright daylight. They also provided stunning views of the restaurant’s outdoor terrace overlooking Amwaj Marina. At the end of the room, a two-piece band took to the stage, belting out popular tunes, adding to the lively atmosphere.

Boasting a huge spread, we couldn’t possibly try everything but visited most of the food stations, keeping space in our stomachs for a few favourites. Starting light at the salad bar, we enjoyed the beetroot moutabel, buffalo mozzarella with tomato and grilled asparagus with parmesan and truffle oil. However, the caramelised pear with brie was a standout, perfectly balancing sweet and savoury. On the side, cheese fatayers, fresh bread, olive paste and pesto were too tempting to pass up.

Next, we headed to the seafood bar, where green mussels, citrus salmon gravlax, poached shrimp and calamari with lime and coriander awaited us – all fresh and flavourful. From there, the hot dishes beckoned. My companion enjoyed fried fish fingers with tartar sauce, wok-fried prawns and shredded beef with oyster sauce. I gravitated towards the Indian cuisine, relishing dal tadka, paneer masala, rice, papadams and pickles.

The pizza section nearby offered thin, crisp slices of margherita and pepperoni, while the Mexican station delivered satisfying chicken and seafood quesadilla bites and chicken empanadas.

I had a tasty taco loaded with veggies and my favourite, guacamole – absolutely yum! We couldn't help but sneak a cheeky taste from the charming children’s section – curly fries are impossible to resist! Also on offer were popcorn and mini cheese sandwiches.

After a short break, we made our way to the sushi station, sampling an assortment of sashimi and maki rolls – fresh, expertly made and elegantly presented.

Then came one of the brunch’s highlights: the oyster bar! Freshly shucked oysters on ice were presented beautifully and paired with a speciality bubbly and various accompaniments, including lemon, chilli vinaigrette, Tabasco and classic mignonette sauce. The latter, a piquant shallot and vinegar mix, was our favourite,

enhancing the natural creaminess of the oysters. A classic squeeze of lemon kept it simple yet perfect.

The truffle linguine live station was another crowd-pleaser. The silky homemade pasta (tossed with my choice of vegetables) in truffle sauce was swirled theatrically inside a Parmesan wheel, picking up a rich, nutty essence. Topped with truffle cheese shavings, it was superbly indulgent without being overpowering. Equally memorable was the lobster thermidor station. Without its shell, the lobster meat took centre stage, tender and smothered in a velvety white mushroom sauce. The sweetness of the lobster paired beautifully with the depth of the rich mushrooms, making every bite worth savouring.

The foie gras station was another hit. Pan-seared to perfection, the goose liver had a crisp golden crust that gave way to a buttery centre. Served with lightly toasted bread, the dish was complemented by a refreshing green apple relish, while a drizzle of balsamic added a deep, caramelised sweetness. A true delicacy.

The Arabic station offered shawarma and kibbeh, while the hearty roast section boasted braised beef brisket, lamb rack Provençale and roasted salmon. All tempting, but we had to pace ourselves. We enjoyed a little pause, which was filled with an entertaining distraction from the staff, who put on a lively performance by dancing amongst the aisles with white napkins, encouraging fellow brunchers to join in the fun.

Despite being full, dessert was non-negotiable. We made the difficult decision to bypass the enticing fondue, crêpe and ice cream stations and head straight for the cakes. Pate au Choux, red velvet, apricot tart and pistachio Swiss roll were our choices, each beautifully crafted and absolutely decadent. My companion took

a liking to the Arabic sweets, picking out Ash Al Bul Bul, Awamat, Mamoul dates and Kunafa. The Umm Ali looked tempting but we made a mental note to leave it for next time.

Before wrapping up, we had to visit the cheese counter – an impressive display featuring Morbier, Manchego, Scamorza, Asiago, Gorgonzola and Swiss Gruyere, among others. A small selection was the perfect finale, followed by Americano coffees and a few delightful chocolates from the dessert spread. Completely and utterly satiated, it was a spectacular afternoon of pure indulgence – a grand brunch, indeed! ✤

AN URBAN OASIS

A luxurious new property – Pearlhouse Bahrain Harbour – is one of the latest swanky retreats at Harbour Row. Apple Sharma experienced this chic seaside escape and all it has to offer with a mini staycation.

Bahrain Harbour boasts some of the most stunning waterfront vistas and views of the city skyline on the island. One of the newest additions to this prestigious address is Pearlhouse Bahrain Harbour, located adjacent to its sister property – Charthouse Bahrain Harbour. Offering the finest amenities with spectacular views to match, it seemed the perfect destination for a mini getaway. As my companion and I headed over to Pearlhouse, I couldn’t wait to relax amidst luxurious surroundings and the crystal waters of the Bahrain Harbour.

Modern Elegance

First impressions are everything and Pearlhouse didn’t disappoint. The glass-façade exterior and stylish interior set a refined tone for our stay. Walking into the marblefloored lobby, we were greeted by an expansive space that looked pristine and polished. The reception desk, with its natural stone finish and soft lighting, felt warm and inviting. Large windows flooded the area with natural light, while a minimalist décor of lush plants, muted green chairs and neutral-coloured sofas gave it a classy yet laid-back vibe. After a swift check-in by the friendly and efficient staff, we made our way to the sea view room on the first floor. Our bags were already delivered and a butler showed us to our (not so) humble abode, adding a touch of the warm hospitality that we encountered throughout our stay.

Design Meets Comfort

Walking in, we were greeted by floor-to-ceiling windows offering a gorgeous waterfront view of the harbour marina. It was hard to tear myself away from this breathtaking scenery to explore the rest of the suite-style room, which featured a living and dining space with a large open kitchenette. Light wood cabinets and a marbled backsplash gave it a fresh look, while essentials, from the sleek appliances to cutlery and crockery, were neatly tucked away but all within reach. The dining table was set elegantly with soft beige chairs and chic tableware, enhanced by touches of greenery. Moving into the living area, the calm, modern vibe was immediately apparent. I slumped into the plush seating, settling in right away with ease. The living room felt open and airy, featuring a colour palette of soft greys and creams, with rich, bottle green-hued cushions adding a splash of colour and sophistication. I loved the houndstoothpatterned armchair, which became my go-to reading spot next to a simple yet stylish coffee table and a large smart TV. I was also impressed by the small glass walled balcony, which offered a lovely space to relax, enjoy a drink and take in the gorgeous harbour views. The bedroom carried the same peaceful aesthetic – calm, welcoming and effortlessly relaxed. The bed, with its crisp white linens and soft sage green pillows, was impossible to resist. Vertical panelling and abstract green paintings gave the room a hint of personality, while floor-to-ceiling windows brought in ample natural light. The bedside

tables were minimal but practical, featuring sleek lamps, while a simple dressing table provided space for all my make-up. Facing the bed was another large smart TV, the perfect setup for a cosy movie night.

The bedroom led to a small walk-in area with cupboards and an attached bathroom - also accessible from the living area, a thoughtful convenience. The bathroom featured a powerful rain shower, plush towels, essential toiletries and lovely touches like scented candles and fragrance sticks, creating a spa-like ambience. Bathrobes, slippers and a hair dryer completed the amenities for a comfortable stay.

Harbour Club

At check-in, we learnt that Pearlhouse guests had access to all of Charthouse’s luxury amenities, including the Harbour Club, which sits between the two properties. Although 24hour in-room dining was available, we decided to wander over to Charthouse for a quick bite to eat.

On the way, we stopped to check out the Harbour Club, conveniently located at Harbour House. As we entered, we were greeted by the friendly receptionist, who happily showed us around. Stylish yet inviting, the club’s exclusive lounge had tasteful décor, featuring a cream sofa with blue and gold cushions, dark wooden shelves and bright, floorto-ceiling windows. Along with an elegant table, a large TV screen sat ready for entertainment or presentations, with quirky touches like toy cars adding a playful charm. Further in, the club’s fully equipped business centre housed several private meeting rooms and individual workspaces, all decked out with sleek wood partitions and muted-tone seating. Purposefully designed for every need, we were

surprised to even find a micro cinema, suitable for six guests, tucked away at the back!

Picturesque Waterfront

As we made our way to Charthouse, we enjoyed the picturesque waterfront, passing several cafés and gourmet restaurants, which adds a cosmopolitan charm unlike anywhere else in Bahrain. Strolling along the waterside, we saw small yachts neatly birthed, bobbing silently in the water, along with water taxis that serve the area, including The Avenues – Bahrain mall. For a unique experience, visitors can hop on a doughnut boat for a scenic ride around Bahrain Harbour, while enjoying onboard refreshments.

Luxurious Amenities

The Charthouse lobby’s décor exuded modern luxury and a welcoming ambience. As we passed Slider Café, the smell of freshly brewed coffee and a display of decadent desserts beckoned us and we made a note to return later. We headed upstairs and had a quick peek inside Aqua, the property’s stylish restaurant – an inviting space with city skyline views and intimate balcony seating.

Just steps away, we stumbled upon the compact yet wellequipped gym. With its sleek design, modern machines and a great city panorama, it almost tempted me to squeeze in a quick workout. The highlight for me, however, was the outdoor terrace, which featured a long, almost infinity-style pool that extended to the edge of the roof.

Again, with an impressive vista, the vibe was serene yet sophisticated, with comfortable loungers inviting us to relax. We decided to grab a small bite to eat at the terrace bar, along with some speciality mocktails prepared by the friendly expert mixologist, Heshan Fonseka. His creations, like ‘Way of the Water’ and ‘Scotsman Sunset’, were as delightful as their names. As the golden hour approached, the sunset view was nothing short of magical. Watching the city lights slowly come alive, it felt like we were in a peaceful oasis amid the urban hustle.

It was time for coffee and so we headed back down to Slider Café to sample the speciality brews, all roasted inhouse. We tried a rich blend of Ethiopian, Columbian and Brazilian green coffee beans and paired it with the café’s signature San Sebastian Cheesecake – simply delicious!

Delightful Dining

After some relaxation at the Pearlhouse, we returned to Aqua for dinner, warmly welcomed by the courteous Restaurant Manager, Husnain Javed, and Executive Chef, Abdel Hameed, who catered to our dietary preferences with some absolutely amazing plates of food.

With stunning nighttime views of the city, our candlelit table, beautifully decorated with rose petals, set the mood for a romantic evening. The meal began with a warm breadbasket and speciality butters, followed by lentil soup and a garden salad with avocado, quinoa, asparagus, sun-dried tomatoes and pumpkin, topped with fried potato shavings. Next, the chef’s stunning sushi platter stole the show, elegantly displayed in the centre of the table and offering an enticing selection of both seafood and vegetarian options. For the mains, we tried fresh eggless spaghetti with truffle and lemon zest, as well as a deconstructed biryani with organic chicken – both dishes bursting with sophisticated flavours. Dessert was a scrumptious chocolate brownie topped with ice cream, a fitting end to an exquisite evening.

Morning Musings

After a restful night, we nipped to the gym for a quick workout before heading to Aqua again for breakfast. The buffet spread included everything from fresh juices, pastries and salads to Arabic and continental staples. Fully satisfied, we decided to take a leisurely stroll by the marina before bidding farewell.

With a promise to return, our stay at Pearlhouse Bahrain Harbour was the perfect getaway for a day of relaxation and comfort at one of the most exclusive addresses on the island. Whether you’re on a business trip or a luxury staycation, this urban oasis in the heart of the city checks all the boxes for those who enjoy a cosmopolitan lifestyle. ✤

TICKETS FOR TWO

The month of love is your excuse for a romantic getaway with just you and your better half.

For all the joy that children bring, life does sometimes come to a standstill after having your mini-me. From running around for school events and playdates to homework and endless chores, you can gradually spiral into the parental daily grind of frustration and stagnation, that often gets directed towards your partner.

Of course, you don’t stop taking vacations, but the way you do it completely changes to a more controlled and restricted format, with a checklist to be ticked off before you book your tickets. So, this February, why not take your significant other and go on that much-deserved romantic break, just the two of you? Rekindle the old flame (or light a new one) and unwind to enjoy and discover a destination on your terms.

Discover the joys of child-free travel with these ideas we’ve put together for that much-needed respite. So, start booking now and thank us later.

Adults-Only Resorts

Gift yourself some time off at an adults-only resort, which offers a wide range of activities and entertainment specially designed for grown-ups. From yoga and spa sessions to vibrant night-time entertainment, pick your escape on an exotic island, an ethereal mountainside or in the heart of a jungle.

Buahan, A Banyan Tree Escape presents a wild and truly offbeat stay in Bali. It follows a no-walls and no-doors

policy so that you can commune with nature as closely as possible. Remotely located in the deep jungles away from the commercial areas, this is a real Eden, where you can enjoy private pool villas with mountain and rice paddy views and an infinity pool. Indulge in relaxing activities like ecotherapy, hiking, biking and foraging in the wild while learning about local plants.

Laze under the Caribbean sun by the pristine waters at Secrets Cap Cana Resort & Spa in the Dominican Republic. Alternatively, embark upon a Transatlantic trip from Barcelona to Florida with Carnival cruises, where you can recline on sunny decks surrounded by sea breezes with your eyes closed in peace. From dining in restaurants by Michelin-starred chefs, savouring infinite sips of refreshing drinks and watching enticing shows, to meeting other couples with whom you can share your experiences, a cruise for grown-ups is a guilty pleasure you won’t regret.

Couch Surfing

Travelling without children can be adventurous and allow you to mingle with locals more fully. When you’re with kids, you would normally look for a place that has all the comforts – safe, spacious rooms that are well-equipped with all amenities; but with couch surfing, you get to stay with strangers, locals with whom you can interact more deeply and explore the place more intensely. This offbeat way of travelling usually involves the host offering a space in their home for you to stay, which could be a spare bedroom or their couch. Facilities could be limited for washing and cooking, and the host may have other guests or roommates staying with them. Couchsurfing is an adventurous and free-spirited travel experience, where you get to explore a destination with an insider's help and experience unique and authentic sights, sounds and tastes like a local. It can be difficult towing little ones along. Also, most couch surfing hosts are single and prefer travellers without children, so this is your chance to revel in spontaneous fun. Check out www.couchsurfing.com for more information.

The carefree pleasures don’t have to be a thing of the past once you have a child. Bring back those romantic and fun holidays you had as a couple with these breaks that you can take annually or as often as possible. And forget the guilt. Hand over the little ones to your parents or siblings to foster their relationship with their grandparents and cousins. What’s more, it also helps in releasing stress and promotes better appreciation towards your kids when you return, helping you be more present and patient with them, while they look forward to the fascinating gifts you’ll bring back from your adventures. ✤

PARIS MEETS TOKYO

Introducing KENZOLOGY – A study of a wardrobe that revolutionises fashion, taken from the bridge-building perspective of a Japanese designer in Paris.

The latest offering from French maison KENZO enhances and refines the blended cultures that artistic director Nigo has developed at the house.

The spring-summer collection features cultural references in an eclectic style drawn from the creative exchange between Nigo and the archive of the late founder Kenzo Takada. Dress codes bring to mind both Japanese heritage and the brand’s Parisian spirit.

For men, classic double-breasted suiting sits alongside threepiece sets, graphic printed denim is used in designs reminiscent of uniforms, while nature-inspired embroidery adorns mesh netting in shades of khaki and navy. A roomy trench brings volume as jeans and trousers display soft, oversized folds and the iconic varsity jacket returns emboldened by the beloved KENZO tiger rendered in cartoon form by graphic artist Verdy. Womenswear is sleekly form fitting in vibrant shades of green and yellow, with boho-style crochet making an impression in maxi dresses and crop tops. Suits present a shining vision in dulled satin, while vibrant prints speak of journeys to paradise and sunny beach days.

We spotted multiple layers of fringing, diving into one of the season’s most prominent trends, and flip flops, much beloved in our region, were everywhere on the runway ranging from flats to chunky platform options, offering height combined with comfort. In accessories, the tiger was back in the form of a plush backpack and badges, while the guys hit the runway sporting oversized totes, another sign of returning practicality.

In this collection, Nigo shows a firm grasp of the brand’s history, while adding his own up-to-the-minute style influences for a collection that’s both trendy and infinitely wearable. ✤

ETHEREAL MELODIES

French-Canadian singer-songwriter Margaux Sauvé has captured fans worldwide with the beautiful sound of her melancholic, ethereal pop music. Get to know the woman behind the mystical voice of Ghostly Kisses in an interview with Apple Sharma, ahead of her Darkroom Tour 2025 at BEYON Al Dana Amphitheatre Desert Garden on February 23.

FACT: When did your musical journey start and what has been your biggest influence?

MS: I started writing songs while studying psychology at university in Quebec City, Canada. In my second year, every time I sat down to study, I felt an irresistible urge to play the piano or pick up my violin. Eventually, that led me to start singing and writing my first songs. One of my biggest influences was London Grammar, especially when they released their first album in 2014. Hannah Reid’s voice opened a new door for me; I realised that my own voice could be just as valid. I’ve never had a particularly strong or powerful voice and for a long time, I struggled with confidence. Whenever I tried to sing as a child, people would always say, "Louder!" but I couldn’t, and it made me feel inadequate. Hearing Hannah’s voice helped me embrace my own vocal style and understand that being different is actually a strength.

FACT: Your artistic moniker, Ghostly Kisses, was inspired by a William Faulkner poem. What significance does this name hold for you and how does it reflect your musical style?

MS: When I started writing songs, I wanted an artist name that would embody a persona reflecting both the sound and qualities of my voice, as well as the nostalgic, romantic and dreamy essence of the project. A friend introduced me to William Faulkner’s poem ‘Une ballade des dames perdues’, where the line ‘They brush my lips with ghostly kisses’ stood out to me. It felt like the perfect name, nothing else could have captured the spirit of my music more fittingly.

FACT: You describe your music as ethereal pop. What inspires you to create such dreamy music?

MS: I’ve always been drawn to music that feels immersive, emotional and almost otherworldly. I think the ethereal quality in my songs comes from a mix of different influences; melancholic melodies, soft yet expressive vocals and atmospheric instrumentations that create a sense of floating or dreaming. I naturally gravitate towards introspective and nostalgic themes and I try to translate those emotions into sound.

A lot of my inspiration comes from personal experiences, memories and deep emotions but also from the way certain places, books or even films make me feel. I love the idea of music being a space where listeners can totally escape, reflect and lose themselves, even if just for a moment.

That’s what I hope to create with Ghostly Kisses; a world where people can immerse themselves and connect with their own emotions.

FACT: What is your creative process for writing your songs? What comes first – the music or the lyrics?

MS: Music comes to me all the time, so whenever I have a melody idea, I immediately record it on my phone’s Dictaphone. I’ve learnt that even the most naive, spontaneous idea can lead to a great song, so I try to capture

everything the moment it pops into my head. Every Ghostly Kisses song is co-written by Louis-Étienne and me. We usually start with the music; either I send him a demo or he shares an instrumental or a melody idea with me, and we develop it together. Sometimes, a few words come out naturally while singing and if they fit the mood, we might keep them. But most of the time, the lyrics take shape once we have a clearer sense of the music itself.

FACT: You’ve been to Bahrain a few times now. What do you most enjoy about performing here and what can fans expect at your upcoming concert this month? Any special message for Bahrain fans?

MS: Bahrain holds a very special place in our hearts. It was one of the first places where people truly connected with our music and bought tickets to see us live, which means so much to us. The fans here are incredibly respectful, they listen so attentively during the songs and then show their enthusiasm at just the right moments. It creates such a beautiful atmosphere and we absolutely love performing in Bahrain. For our upcoming concert, fans can expect an intimate and emotional performance designed to immerse them in an ethereal atmosphere. We strive to create a space where they can dive into the world of Ghostly Kisses, allowing themselves to be absorbed by the music and the emotions it evokes. It’s a moment where feelings surface, where people can go deep into their own thoughts and where the experience becomes truly powerful. We can't wait to share this moment, thank you Bahrain for your love and support – it truly means the world to us!

FACT: What’s in store for 2025? Are there any new projects in the pipeline that we can look forward to?

MS: In 2025, Louis-Étienne and I will mainly be focussing on writing new music. We already have a few ideas brewing but we want to take the time to truly dive deep into the next chapter of Ghostly Kisses and explore new creative directions. Aside from that, we’re still shaping our plans, but one thing is certain, we’ll be so happy when we get the chance to return to Bahrain again.

BIG SCREEN Back in Action Mufasa: The Lion King

Need to Know:

The plot involves two ex-CIA spies, Emily and Matt (played by Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx), who are pulled back into espionage after their secret identities are exposed. This is the third time the actors have paired after previous movies Any Given Sunday in 1999 and Annie in 2014.

Director: Seth Gordon

Cast: Jamie Foxx, Cameron Diaz, Jamie Demetriou, Kyle Chandler and Glenn Close

Why Is It Worth Watching?

Movie critics have given Back in Action ratings of 2.5 on a scale of one to four, and others 5.6 out of 10. What is worth noting, though, is the fact that Jamie Foxx suffered a brain bleed, which resulted in a stroke in April 2023 while shooting the movie, and was unwell for a while. So, this really marks a triumphant return to being back on set, showing determination to overcome adversity. Cameron Diaz, on the other hand, came out of a 10-year retirement where she was focussing on family, to reunite with Jamie. The pair have an electric chemistry and Director Seth Gordon (Horrible Bosses, Four Christmases) knows how to film fast-moving comedies with star appeal. Both actors proved they haven’t lost their onscreen charisma. They were terrific together while engaging in high-wire action sequences. Overall impression? Not entirely a déjà vu but if you’ve enjoyed watching Cameron Diaz in Knight and Day with Tom Cruise, then this will be a worthwhile entertainment while folding laundry in your living room.

Can’t Rush Greatness By Central Cee

Can’t Rush Greatness is Oakley Neil Caesar-Su, better known as Central Cee’s, debut album following his previous two mixtapes: 23 and Wild West. The rapper saw major success in 2022 when hit single Doja was featured in a commercial directed by Cole Bennet, continuing to build his portfolio through collaborations with big names like Drake, The Kid LAROI, PinkPantheress and J Cole.

Can’t Rush Greatness is the final project of works spanning two years, including tracks like Gen Z Luv and BAND4BAND, which had viral moments online after their 2024 release. First teased in May 2024 with the letters ‘CRG’ embellished at the start of Central Cee’s CC Freestyle video, the album was officially announced on October 31, 2024, along with the title, artwork and January release date. Can't Rush Greatness is mostly about Central Cee's rise in the rap industry, particularly fame and the paranoia that comes with it. He talks a lot about how fame has changed and shaped him, though not always for the better. He explained that despite delaying his progress, the energy he put into the album and the timing of the release fully encapsulates what it is at its core: a reminder to people that they are human. Although the album has been in the works for almost two years, as the title suggests: you simply Can’t Rush Greatness.

DANCE/ELECTRONIC

EUSEXUA

FKA Twigs

EUSEXUA is FKA Twigs’ third studio album, taking on a euphoric tone with the singer’s high notes and use of sound effects. The release came into existence when FKA Twigs experienced moments of healing and spontaneity in Prague. The word ‘Eusexua’ was penned by the singer, and she described it as 'The pinnacle of Human Experience'.

The artist played the track EUSEXUA and other unreleased projects for the first time at Valentino L’École for the Spring 2024 event, however, the title track was the only one to make it onto the album.

EUSEXUA features artists like Koreless on the track Drums of Death and even North West on Childlike Things , where she has a verse in Japanese.

EUSEXUA is about finding a euphoric feeling and holding onto it but, on the flip side, explores how searching for a feeling can leave someone feeling trapped.

Overall, the album’s concluding track, Wanderlust, ends on a hopeful note. It even goes so far as to break the fourth wall with lyrics such as “Album's way too long though” and “I'll be in my head if you need me, right there if you need me”, as though encouraging the listener to live their life outside of the album.

What We’re (Still) Talking About

What can money not buy?

In a plot twist worthy of a Hollywood blockbuster, Saudi Arabia has reportedly enlisted Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer to give its national anthem a bit of a remix. Because why settle for the usual pomp and ceremony when you can have the guy who scored The Dark Knight and Dune bring in glamour? Reported by The Guardian , according to Turki Alalshikh, the head of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority, Hans has signed on to rework the anthem

‘with different instruments’. So, what does that mean? A full orchestral explosion? An Interstellar-style organ crescendo? The suspense is killing us. But wait, there's more. The maestro isn’t stopping at anthems. There’s talk of a Saudi-themed musical called Arabia , a film score for The Battle of Yarmuk and a ‘very large concert’. Basically, Hans is about to make Saudi Arabia sound like an epic movie trailer.

Short Lived Panic

For a few agonising hours, TikTok vanished from the US app stores, sending millions into a full-blown frenzy. No dance challenges, no lip-sync battles, no endless stream of brain rot. THE HORROR! While most people anxiously refreshed their screens, wondering if they’d have to start talking to their families again, others saw a business opportunity. According to USA TODAY, some quick-thinking folks realised that their phones – with the still-working TikTok app – had suddenly become priceless

commodities. Listings popped up on eBay with iPhones going for as much as USD25,000, promising desperate TikTok addicts a way back into their beloved app. But of course, the hysteria was short-lived. Before anyone could actually sell a kidney to fund their TikTok-ready iPhone purchase, the app was restored after Trump and TikTok came to a last-minute agreement. But for a brief, shining moment, we got to witness peak internet capitalism: supply, demand and an overwhelming fear of missing out on a cat doing backflips.

The Ultimate Catfish

Right up until he needed USD1 million for a kidney treatment, supposedly locked out of his accounts due to his divorce with

Angelina Jolie. Fresh from her own divorce, Anne wired him USD850,000 from her settlement. Their love lasted until the real Brad Pitt stepped out with his actual girlfriend in Venice and Anne realised, she’d been scammed.
