ICE BATHS

You may know about the Ice Bucket Challenge that went viral in 2014. As its successor, cold plunges became the next big thing, popularised by athletes like Paula Radcliffe and Michael Phelps. Cold-water immersion has been known for centuries, first practised by ancient Greeks. Hippocrates, in the fourth century BC, documented the benefits of cold therapy for medicinal purposes and pain relief. A derivation of cryotherapy, ice baths are booming now, offered by gyms, spas, professional clinics and even beach clubs.

Not for the faint-hearted, an ice bath involves submerging yourself in a tub of ice or icy water for five to 15 minutes. It is claimed to be beneficial for muscle soreness, reducing inflammation and aiding exercise recovery. However, ice baths should be taken under expert supervision and guidance as they present a risk of hypothermia and shock.

Once the go-to of endurance athletes, ice baths have trickled down to neighbourhood fitness centres. From pop-up barrels that enable you to plunge yourself in an upright position and inflatable tubs when you want portability for a dip with a view, to premium smart tubs that control temperature at the touch of a button and activate audio and breathwork guides – there’s a wide range to choose from.

Where to go for ice baths in Bahrain: °CRYO Stay Young Bahrain at The Ritz-Carlton Bahrain, Pause Recovery and Massage Centre, House of Athletes, The MJ Center, Malmö Massage & Recovery.

FUNCTIONAL FITNESS TRAINING

Picture lifting a heavy Amazon delivery without pulling a

back muscle, heaving your luggage to place in the overhead compartment on a plane without straining your wrist and pivoting without twisting your ankle. Sounds ideal, like it should be? Make it so.

Despite the regimented gym sessions in our sedentary lives, workouts may not be as effective as we’d like them to be. So, if you’re bored of Pilates and tired of forcing HIIT on yourself, there’s good news for you. The fitness trend for 2025 is more practical, customisable and, most importantly, sustainable. Make your fitness routine more natural by adopting Functional Fitness – a workout format that incorporates movements that facilitate you to function at your optimal best daily. “Functional training is performing exercises that replicate everyday life,” says Paul Hamblin, veteran Personal Trainer in Bahrain. “For example, lifting something and pressing above your head; sitting down and standing up – all these movements can be replicated with gym equipment, to improve strength, coordination and balance.”

Designed to make the human body behave as it should, functional fitness involves movements like squats, reverse lunges, single deadlifts and push-ups. It’s a holistic set of exercises that ensures all your muscle groups and joints are engaged daily to free you from pain, soreness and incorrect movement. It helps improve your balance, stability and flexibility and reduces the risk of injury. It boosts your overall strength and energy while keeping your weight in check.

LOW IMPACT WORKOUTS

Is your exercise regimen taking a toll on your joints? Switch to low-impact workouts, that are less straining yet yield effective results. “Low impact workouts offer a reduced risk of injury while improving strength, flexibility and cardiovascular health without putting undue risk on the body,” says Johan Esterhuizen, Biokineticist, from Pure Fit Fitness Studio. Activities include walking, cycling, Pilates, swimming and yoga. Bear in mind that low impact does not mean low intensity or easy; these activities will make you huff and puff but without causing aches and pains the next day. They have been known to improve heart and joint health, strengthen bones and lower the risk of diabetes. Still too easy? Make it more challenging by lengthening the workouts, speeding up the pace and adding resistance. According to Johan, mobility and core stability exercises will be in vogue this year.

Where to find Low Impact Workouts in Bahrain: Pure Fit Fitness Studio, FIT Gym & Spa, Iron Park Gym, Olympia Health & Fitness Center, Madan Fitness.

STRENGTH TRAINING

Weight loss is perhaps the biggest issue most people grapple with in their fitness journeys and there’s no end to trying out various tips and tricks in the hope of achieving it. While fads come and go, it’s the most classic and age-old methods that often get overlooked. Like Strength Training. Endless cardio and diets may fall short without assimilating strength training into your fitness plan.

Trainer Andrey Gordeev from Spartan Fitness says: “Strength Training facilitates the development of muscle mass, enhances bone density, improves metabolism and increases

overall strength and endurance. Moreover, Strength Training enhances posture, balance and coordination, reducing the risk of injuries and falls.” Strength Training or Resistance Training includes exercises that work out your muscles against an external resistance. These exercises involve the use of equipment like dumbbells, medicine balls, resistance bands and weight machines. You can also practise bodyweight exercises like push-ups, pull-ups, squats and lunges to perform without gear.

These exercises help to reduce body fat, increase lean muscle and burn calories more effectively. “Gradually increasing weights, repetitions or sets over time challenges your muscles and supports ongoing progress. Allowing adequate rest is vital for muscle repair and growth. Ensure you get sufficient sleep and incorporate rest days into your training regimen,” adds Andrey.

GUT HEALTH

The bedrock for the maintenance of the body and mind, gut health is the key to your overall well-being. Having a healthy gut microbiome and digestive system ensures the favourable functioning of your vitals and is paramount to avoiding issues like Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Inflammatory Bowel Disease and leaky gut.

Factors that affect the microbiome include a poor diet, high stress, excessive intake of antibiotics and insufficient sleep.

“Your gut is also your second brain, so it is very important to improve your gut health through managing your stress levels,” says Hanoof Alrayis, Clinical Dietician at Royal Bahrain Hospital.

“Start by cutting down processed, high-sugar food items that harm your gut health and replace them with unprocessed, fibre-rich food.”

Keep your gut flourishing with a diet rich in fibre, fermented foods and ample hydration. “Introducing probiotics into your diet helps in increasing good bacteria in your gut, which improves overall digestion. You may take them in the form of supplements or naturally from yoghurt, kefir and kimchi,” advises Hanoof.

INTERMITTENT FASTING

Sure, you’ve tried several diets. But have you thought about when to eat instead of what to eat? Intermittent fasting is about giving importance to your eating schedule, which is very specific, such as 16/8. It involves eating during a window of eight hours and then fasting for 16. Other formats include the 5:2 approach, where you eat regularly for five days and then limit yourself to 500-600 calories – one-meal-a-day – twice a week. “Intermittent fasting is great for breaking a plateau, especially

for people struggling to lose weight in the long-term, as it puts the person at a calorie deficit and improves fat metabolism,” says Hanoof. “However, intermittent fasting must be done right to prevent nutrient deficiencies. Try having two meals and a snack every three to four hours during an eight to 10-hour eating window to cover your essential micro and macronutrient requirements, while still being at a safe calorie deficit,” she cautions.

HOLISTIC WELLNESS

With the increase in and uncontrolled use of pharmaceutical drugs like antibiotics, antidepressants, painkillers and sedatives, and the side effects that follow, natural care is growing in popularity with alternative therapies like ayurveda, yoga, meditation and massages. And while you may make time to hit the gym religiously, sleep most often tends to be compromised. Sleep therapy assists you in recognising and altering your sleeping habits to ensure better quality and quantity of sleep. From sleep syncing to cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), there are several ways to fix your nightly bedtime routine. While deep breathing is not a recent groundbreaking discovery, breathwork is being understood and practised widely now. You don’t need a morning routine or yoga class to practise breathwork. Taking out a few minutes any time of the day, anywhere, goes a long way in preserving your mental peace. Breathwork can be done in many ways – from deep abdominal breathing and alternate nostril breathing, to sequence counts like 4-7-8 where you inhale for four counts, hold for seven counts and exhale for eight counts. Slowing down the breath has several benefits, including reducing blood pressure, increasing oxygen supply to the organs and improving mood.

BOLSTER YOUR WELLNESS JOURNEY WITH THE POWER OF TECHNOLOGY

In the era of hyper-personalisation, wellness tech is poised to become a game-changer in 2025. AI-driven apps and wearable devices like Fitbod and Oura Ring provide real-time insights and adapt to your daily energy and nutrition levels. They can create advanced and intelligent training schedules and diagnose impending medical conditions by monitoring various metrics. Adding meal-planning apps, like Paprika, Eat This Much and PlateJoy, and calorie-counters like MyFitnessPal, LifeSum and Nutritionix Track, into your armoury can help fortify your defence against weight gain and help maintain a customised diet to suit your body’s needs. Shelling out some bucks on kitchen gadgets like a smart refrigerator that alerts you to depleting reserves or expiring foods can shield you against last-minute frittering on junk and take-away.

With the focus on mental wellness like never before, apps and programmes like Calm, Mindshift CBT and Headspace could be your handy go-to to stay calm and focussed to beat the daily grind. One area that is seeing a rising boom is Sleep Technology. If you’re plagued by the lack of quality sleep, investing in a Smart Mattress or Smart Bed may be the solution to all your problems. These hi-tech mattresses or beds use sensors and smart technology to collect and examine data about your sleep patterns. They offer adjustable settings for firmness, support, inclination and temperature to ensure you sleep faster and more restfully. The best part? They offer customisation on both sides of the bed, so no more quarrelling with your partner. And if you’re

tonodiaz@Freepik.com

the one who needs a monotonous hum to lull you to sleep, get yourself a white noise machine like LectroFan, Yogasleep or Homedics, so you can blank out that restless mind or block out noises for undistracted slumber.

Want to take your wellness up even further? Imagine altering your genetic make-up to lead a stress and disease-free life. Sounds utopic? Say hello to ‘biohacking’. A form of preventative healthcare, biohacking employs AI diagnostics to stay healthy and sustain it long-term by making accumulative changes to your body, diet and lifestyle. It also helps to anticipate risk disposition to genetic diseases and prescribes deterrent measures for the same.

Busy lifestyles need smart solutions and the advancement in beauty treatments has helped women and men all over the world to enhance their skin and hair.

Hi-tech treatments and beauty gadgets

Microcurrent facial toning sculpts the face and reduces wrinkles. Facial hair removal procedures like dermaplaning are painless and convenient. Popularised by celebs, intravenous therapy containing antioxidants like vitamin C and glutathione has made a mark in providing instant results in skin brightening and increasing collagen formation. LED masks are a staple at skin clinics now for their ability to increase collagen production, toning and reduction of acne. Those resistant to physical scrubs, brushes and chemical peels can rely on ultrasonic scrubbers for gentle exfoliation. Smart mirrors like Himirror track the formation of wrinkles and moles on your face and monitor the effectiveness of products.

AI Diagnostics

With AI pervading all domains, beauty and skincare couldn’t be left behind. AI skin analysis helps detect skin issues and provides recommendations on the most suitable treatment and products within seconds. AR virtual make-up try-ons have been a boon for remote shopping, where you can identify the most apt shades and experiment with colours.

Edible Skincare

Since external care is never enough, now you can also eat your way to flawless skin. Superfood supplements and collagen powders are becoming a favoured ammunition for beauty peeps. But as always, be sure to take a doctor’s advice before popping any pills. Meanwhile, Golden Milk and morning ginger shots are safe bets.

Skin cycling

Skincare has undergone a renaissance with active ingredients pervading every skincare product. But at the end of 2024, our complexions have become saturated with these super ingredients so much so that a break is in demand in the form of skin cycling.

Using multiple active ingredients simultaneously risks overburdening and damaging the skin instead of gaining the desired results. Skin cycling helps to give a muchneeded breather, by following a four-night singleingredient routine. Beginning with exfoliation on the first night, using retinol on the second and intense hydrants on the third and fourth, the emphasis is on minimalism. This basic routine helps skin repair its barrier and restore itself from the effects of strong actives.

Lymphatic Drainage

Nothing beats a good ol’ massage that aids the lymphatic system’s natural detoxification process. It helps eliminate excess fluid build-up from the lymph nodes, decrease puffiness, boost circulation and promote a clearer complexion. Lymphatic massage should be done by trained professionals like physiotherapists and massage therapists. Thereafter, you can learn to do simple massages yourself at home. Lymphatic massage is performed on the armpits, neck and the groin area.

With these exciting innovations to look forward to and technology helping us incorporate and implement them in easier ways, taking care of our health shouldn’t feel like a chore. From organic exercises and eating mindfully to smarter skincare, here’s to making health and wellness a lifestyle choice this new year.

NEW YEAR, NEW YOU!

As the calendar flips to 2025, we all feel the pull of a fresh start. A sense of renewal sweeps over us and people all around the world embrace the tradition of making New Year’s resolutions. While the promise of new beginnings is exciting, keeping them is often easier said than done. Let’s delve into the history and psychology behind New Year’s resolutions, explore why they often fail and uncover creative strategies, tips and tricks to make them stick!

START THE YEAR RIGHT

Why Do We Make Resolutions?

The tradition of New Year’s resolutions isn’t new – it dates back over 4,000 years to ancient Babylonia, where promises were made to the Gods in exchange for a prosperous year. The Romans also adopted similar practices, offering sacrifices in January to Janus, the two-faced God of beginnings and transitions. In modern times, although the focus has shifted from pleasing deities to self-improvement, the essence remains the same – a fresh start.

Psychologists have shown that focussing on goals is linked to higher motivation and self-confidence, in turn leading to selfbetterment. Even if you don’t fully succeed, just the process of setting goals can improve focus and direction. Essentially, resolutions are a way of saying: “I believe in a better version of myself” – a powerful motivator in itself.

Why Do Resolutions Fail?

It’s no secret that every New Year millions make resolutions, and, by February, most have fallen by the wayside. How often do people pledge to go to the gym every day, only to quit by the third week? That’s because unrealistic expectations and life’s unpredictability often derail even the best intentions.

Studies suggest that around 40% of adults make New Year’s resolutions, yet only 9% to 12% stick to them by year’s end. Why the striking gap? Here are some common reasons we fail to stay the course:

● Vague Goals: Resolutions like ‘be healthy’ or ‘save more money’ are too broad and make it difficult to measure progress.

● Over-ambition: Many resolutions fail because they are just too unrealistic. For example, committing to working out daily after months of being a couch potato will lead to overwhelm and burnout.

● Lack of Planning: Without a proper roadmap, resolutions can lose their momentum and get forgotten.

Fresh Ideas for 2025

Ditch the clichéd resolutions and try something new this year. If it’s fun and excites you, you’ll be more likely to stick to it. Check out this list for inspiration:

● Volunteer for a cause that resonates with you, be it working at an animal shelter or helping the elderly.

● Learn a new language or skill, like photography or painting.

● Perform random acts of kindness and brighten someone’s day each week with a small, thoughtful gesture or compliment.

● Try a digital detox and disconnect from screens at least one day a week.

● Travel to a destination you’ve never been to before.

● Practice gratitude by journalling three things you’re thankful for each day.

● Get creative with your hands – whether its pottery, knitting or DIY projects.

● Commit to cooking one new recipe every week.

HOW TO STAY ON TRACK

Tips and Tricks

Sticking to resolutions doesn’t have to feel like a chore. Try these practical tips and tricks to stay committed.

● Set SMART Goals: Make them ‘Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound’. For example, instead of ‘read more books’, aim for ‘read one book every month’.

● Break Goals Into Steps: Divide larger goals into smaller, more manageable tasks.

● Track Your Progress: Use journals, apps or even just a simple checklist to keep tabs on achievements. Studies have shown writing down resolutions led to increased success rates.

● Accountability Partners: Share your goals publicly with friends, family or online communities to stay focussed and accountable.

● Reward Yourself: Don’t forget to celebrate small wins to stay motivated.

Choose Alternatives

If big resolutions feel overwhelming, start small and build up.

● Yearly Themes: Instead of rigid goals, adopt a broader theme like ‘2025: The Year of Connection’ or ‘The Year of Exploration’. This will allow flexibility and creativity.

● Monthly Focus Areas: Divide the year into themes, such as January: Wellness, February: Relationship Goals, March: Budgeting and so on.

● Bucket Lists: Replace measurable goals with a list of experiences to try – it could be anything from skydiving to learning to bake to roller skating.

Helpful Apps

Let technology lend a hand – apps are a great way to keep you motivated and track your progress.

● Habitica: Turns your goals into fun challenges by gamifying your resolutions.

● Todoist: Breaks down your goals into manageable tasks with progress tracking.

● GoalsWon: Experienced human accountability coaches help keep you and your life goals on track.

● Centr: Personalised workout, nutrition and mindfulness plans inspired by Chris Hemsworth.

● Calm or Headspace: Start or enhance a mindfulness journey with guided meditations.

● YNAB (You Need A Budget): Helps you take control of your finances by assigning jobs to every dollar and tracking your spending.

● Duolingo: Learn a language in fun, bite-sized lessons.

So, you see – resolutions don’t have to be daunting. Simply start small, stay flexible and focus on what truly matters to you. Whatever your goals, remember – progress, not perfection, is the key to success. Let’s make 2025 your best year yet!

A FRESH FACELIFT

FACT got its hands on the 2025 Hyundai Tucson, a premium small crossover SUV with an impressive array of high-end features.

Thanks to the team at First Motors, FACT was invited to inspect and test drive the Premium model of the new Tucson. The fourth generation of Hyundai’s iconic SUV is now sporting a fresh facelift and many new and enhanced comfort, convenience and safety features.

Distinctive Exterior Design

As the familiar shape of the Tucson came into view, we spotted subtle upgrades to the exterior design.

The shape of the 2025 model’s body exudes a bold and modern character with angled surfaces and an unapologetically unique style that sets it apart from other vehicles in the market segment.

A new, yet recognisable, black-coated radiator grille is complemented by a redesigned front bumper fascia, along with a remodelled LED lighting display. We appreciated how the daytime running light signature has been streamlined from 10 units to eight larger ones, combining effortlessly with the grille. This design feature ties the aggressive front end into a neat and stylish arrangement.

Making our way to the sides of the SUV, we noted the crisp lines and angled surfaces connecting the front to the rear. Eighteeninch alloy wheels (with contrasting finishes), black mud guards and bridge-type, raised side roof rails enhance the rugged nature of the vehicle, while body-coloured door handles add to the premium feel.

At the back end, the redesigned rear fascia along with the lighting strip run the full width of the vehicle. Now familiar fang-shaped LED taillights amplify the car’s aggressive demeanour.

Upgraded Interior

Once inside, we were pleasantly surprised by the spacious and comfortable cockpit and the sophisticated layout of the general cabin area.

Hyundai has put a lot of time and effort into improving the latest Tucson’s interior. Thanks to the panoramic power sunroof, there was plenty of natural light for us to take in the impressive space. We were fortunate enough to experience the Premium level trim that comes with comfy leather seats, which are multi-adjustable with lumbar support.

The redesigned centre stack now includes frequently used driver controls, such as select HVAC controls that ensure optimum ergonomics. Easy access to volume control has also been provided.

Another notable feature is the wireless charging pad in the centre console, making it a breeze to recharge devices on the move. The refreshed leather steering wheel and centre console enhanced usability and the overall stylish character of the vehicle. We loved how the door panels and dashboard formed together seamlessly with high-end materials and finishes present throughout the interior.

Once in the back row, we remarked on the abundance of head and knee room on offer. With split folding-type rear seats and plenty of space for a family of five, this car is a great option for longer journeys. The luggage compartment also provides loads of cargo room, especially with the rear seating folded flat.

It would be amiss of us not to mention the dual-zone climate control that can keep the entire car cool even on the hottest of days.

First Class Tech & Infotainment

The tech in the new Tucson has definitely levelled up, and we enjoyed taking in all the 2025 model has to offer.

The Premium trim level meant our Tucson housed an eight-inch audio screen and a 10.25-inch visual cluster, along with loads of analogue gauges. The improved infotainment system was far easier to use, with near effortless access to desired information and system functions.

Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are equipped as standard, as is wireless connectivity. The optional Bose stereo system proved exceptional, helping us to provide a great soundtrack to our day. We were told by the team at First Motors that a new 12-inch colour Head-Up Display (HUD) with premium graphics is available upon request.

Further must-mention features include the digital key smartphone app that allows the owner to remotely start the engine, as well as to unlock the vehicle.

Pleasing Power & Performance

As always, we were happiest when setting off along the tarmac. As we made our way around the Kingdom, we had to remark on how smoothly the new Tucson performed, cruising along quietly, handling corners like a dream.

Our model housed a 2.5L GDi Petrol engine that purred quietly all day. Coupled with an eight-speed transmission, we were satisfied with the car’s response when its power was called upon, along with the effective braking system.

Once at our test location, we managed a 0-100km/h time of around nine seconds, not too shabby for a family SUV.

After hours of travelling the island, we felt as comfortable as we did when we first entered the vehicle, once again confirming the SUV’s perfect make-up for long road trips or for constant day-to-day use.

Significant Safety Standards

To us, one of the best features of the 2025 Tucson is its wide range of driver assistance and safety features.

The shape of the 2025 model’s body exudes a bold and modern character with angled surfaces and an unapologetically unique style that sets it apart from other vehicles in the market segment.”

Included in this list are an anti-lock braking system (ABS), electronic stability control (ESC), hill-start control (HAC), an electronic parking brake (EPB), a forward collision avoidance system, lane keeping assist, a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), front and rear parking distance warning, a rear-view monitor and many others.

We honestly feel that owners of this SUV can leave on any journey with confidence that Hyundai has provided some of the very best protection for all occupants.

Our Verdict

The new Hyundai Tucson is a capable, comfortable and classy SUV, offering an abundance of cutting-edge tech and a safe travelling environment for the whole family.

THE FOLDABLE THAT’S BUILT TO LAST

The new Mate X6 from HUAWEI is ‘built like a tank’ pushing foldable durability to greater heights.

From their early days, foldable mobile phones have excited debate over whether they’re actually strong enough for everyday use. Now with the release of the Mate X6, Huawei has come up with a design that’s strong at the same time as retaining a sleek and stylish design ethos.

Built Like a Tank

The Mate X6 is protected by the 2nd Gen Kunlun Glass, which is now 25 times more drop resistant. And the interior display is reinforced with a carbon fibre plate that makes it 65% stiffer. With an aviation-grade aluminium frame, that’s 37% stronger than previous versions, and the new advanced hinge mechanism crafted from 100% rocket steel, you’ve got a phone that can take a beating while still looking sleek.

Cameras That Impress

Cameras on foldables have often been a bit of a letdown, juggling quality and the constraints of a folding mechanism. But Huawei’s Mate X6 is flipping the script. The Ultra Chroma camera system delivers stunning colour accuracy and clarity, thanks to 1.50 million spectral channels promising photos with true-to-life skin tones and vibrant colours, no matter the lighting. It’s the first foldable phone to support a 5cm telephoto macro lens, perfect for detailed close-ups or impressive telephoto shots. Plus, the 50MP main camera with a 10-size adjustable aperture gives you creative control over depth of field and light intake.

Multitasking Like a Pro

The expansive folding screen is built for productivity. Live

multitasking lets you run up to three apps at once in the expanded view, for example taking a video call while editing a document and browsing the web.

The EMUI 15 takes things up a notch in the fun stakes with playful features like the Emoji Crush theme. Your emojis react to your actions – shake your phone and they might change expressions or roll around the screen.

Display Brilliance

The Mate X6 features a 6.45-inch OLED external screen with a 2440×1080 resolution, perfect for quick glances and everyday use. Flip it open, and you get a massive 7.93-inch OLED internal display at 2440×2240 resolution. Both screens are bright and vibrant. Whether you’re under the bright sun or in a dimly lit room, the visuals stay crisp and clear. Depending on what you’re doing, the display refresh rate can adjust from 1Hz and 120Hz, ensuring smooth scrolling and gaming without draining the battery.

Design That Dazzles

Design-wise, the Mate X6 draws inspiration from celestial orbits and is impressively slim – only 9.85mm thick when folded and 4.6mm unfolded. The Nebula Gray edition, with its Micro-Nano 3D Topography finish, feels both premium and resilient. Crafted from Vagen Fiber, a blend of aerospace-grade glass fibre and bulletproof vest materials, this phone is as tough as it is beautiful. The Mate X6 also comes in Nebula Red and Black with ultra-thin plain leather options. ✤ GO: VISIT WWW.HUAWEI.COM FOR MORE INFORMATION.

Experience bold flavors in every bite

In Conversation with… Thibault de Vries

With more than 15 years of experience in the hospitality industry, the General Manager of Jumeirah Gulf of Bahrain leads with passion and shares highlights of 2024, his leadership style and his biggest motivation as a hotelier.

You've completed a full year at Jumeirah Gulf of Bahrain. What have been the main highlights for you and what can guests look forward to in the New Year?

My main highlights for 2024, my first year here, have been to really increase the quality of our guest service and further develop the resort in offering more experiences throughout the property. Some of those also relate to food and beverage, such as our guest chef visit that we had, which we want to continue this year; the jazz on the beach event – we are looking at doing several of those this year as well; and the opening of Mar Y Mas, of course, which was a big success. So those are some of the highlights.

Jumeirah Gulf of Bahrain has been recognised as a ‘Great Place to Work’ for the second consecutive year. How do you foster a positive work culture and how would you describe your leadership style?

Yes, we are really proud of our consecutive recognition as a great place to work. I think a work culture is important, where there is respect both ways, there's transparency, there's clear vision and clear goals and a lot of training and development opportunities for people to learn and grow. I think having a positive outlook is always good but also addressing points that need attention and should be raised with people to further improve our service delivery. Also, our administrative efforts, let's say back-of-house departments.

As an engaged, passionate and energised luxury hotelier, what is your biggest inspiration and motivation?

I think my biggest inspiration is that I believe we can do better every day. The biggest motivation for me is having guests leave the resort and saying that they had a fabulous time with us, that they really enjoyed the hotel, that the team took excellent care of them, that they enjoyed all the experiences and that they'll be back in the future. I think that’s what is one of my largest motivators.

Having run a full marathon and climbed Europe’s highest peak, what’s next on your list of adventures?

I'm not quite sure yet. I'm running a half marathon in January but that's nothing too out of the ordinary. I am looking at, perhaps, triathlon participation and exploring some other exciting challenges.

How are you enjoying life in Bahrain so far and what is your favourite place on the island to relax with your family?

The family and I are enjoying our life in Bahrain very much. Everybody has settled in well and is enjoying the relaxed lifestyle. My family loves to come to Jumeirah Gulf of Bahrain – the kids enjoy the pool, while I do a little bit of work on the weekends sometimes. We also have a nice little compound with a pool, where we hang out with friends and neighbours. ✤

ISLAND INSIDER

Noor Alhayki

Group Marketing and Corporate Communications Manager, Gulf Hotels Group

Your career journey has been incredibly diverse, spanning diplomacy, digital marketing and entrepreneurship. What inspired you to transition into the digital marketing world?

My transition into digital marketing was inspired by my passion for connecting with audiences and creating impactful messages. Coming from a background in diplomacy and public policy, I understood the power of effective communication in building relationships and influencing perceptions. As technology evolved, I realised that digital marketing offered unparalleled opportunities to reach and engage audiences in real-time across diverse platforms. This ability to amplify brand messages and drive measurable results aligned perfectly with my skills and aspirations. Moreover, my

entrepreneurial mindset pushed me to explore innovative ways to differentiate brands and elevate their presence in competitive markets.

What is your favourite social media platform and why? And how much time on average do you spend on it every day?

My favourite social media platform is LinkedIn. I value it for its professional networking opportunities, thought leadership and the ability to engage with industry trends and insights. It’s a platform where meaningful conversations happen and connections are made that contribute to both personal and professional growth. Additionally, I enjoy TikTok because it allows me to understand the younger generation and stay updated on emerging trends that often shape digital culture.

Instagram is another favourite, as it remains the number one platform in Bahrain, making it essential for engaging with audiences and building a strong visual brand presence. On average, I spend about one to two hours daily across these platforms, ensuring I stay informed, connected and inspired.

What’s one thing on your bucket list that you’re determined to tick off this year?

In 2025, I am determined to make a lasting impact in my current role at Gulf Hotels Group by successfully initiating and establishing a centralised marketing department. My goal is to create a dynamic, agency-style structure that streamlines operations, enhances collaboration and elevates the marketing strategies across the group’s properties and outlets.

CHAMPIONING EGYPTIAN CUISINE

Having travelled all over Egypt to explore what makes the local cuisine unique, Zooba Executive Chef and Co-Founder, Moustafa Elrefaey, brings classic Egyptian flavours to Bahrain. He talks about his award-winning falafel and his playful approach to food.

Zooba has become a global name, from Cairo to New York and now in Bahrain. What do you think sets it apart from other Egyptian culinary concepts?

Zooba's success on the global stage can be attributed to its meticulous attention to detail and focussed commitment to culinary excellence. Unlike many restaurants that lose focus under pressure, Zooba maintains a steadfast emphasis on quality and consistency, even during peak periods – relying on a strong kitchen operation and detailed service approach.

In 2016, Zooba won the Falafel Festival in London. How did it feel to have Ta'ameya (Egyptian falafel) named the best in the world and what makes it so special? It really was a heated competition! Therefore, winning the Falafel Festival in London was an incredible honour. Competing against the best falafel chefs worldwide, it was truly gratifying to see Egyptian ta'ameya recognised as the best. The simplicity of its ingredients – fava beans, herbs and spices – is what makes it so special. This straightforward approach allows the natural flavours to shine.

Your favourite quote is: “As chefs we get paid to play with food... so I make sure to enjoy that.” How do you keep that sense of fun alive in a busy kitchen?

I view cooking as a form of artistic expression, similar to playing a musical instrument. By experimenting with ingredients and techniques, I can create dishes that are both delicious and visually appealing. This playful approach keeps me inspired and passionate, even in the busiest kitchen.

If you had to pick one signature dish from Zooba’s menu that perfectly represents your culinary philosophy, what would it be and why?

Choosing a single signature dish is challenging, especially as this menu was curated with so much love and care – since it comes from the cuisine my team and I grew up eating! Yet, I can say that the chicken with molokheyya and vermicelli rice, Cairene Molokheyya, for example, encapsulates my culinary philosophy perfectly. This dish harmoniously blends a variety of flavours and textures: the umamirich roasted chicken, the savoury molokheyya, the sweet and sour pickled tomatoes and the comfort of the vermicelli rice, are a perfectly orchestrated symphony of taste that delights the senses.✤

TRADITIONAL TASTES UNDER THE STARS

Liz O’Reilly discovered a warm welcome and exceptional flavours on a visit to Byblos, the Lebanese beachfront restaurant at Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay.

To reach Byblos is always a treat as you walk through the hotel lobby which, at this time of year, is decorated in fine style, a veritable fairy grotto of twinkling lights adorning the lush greenery. Then a short stroll through the verdant gardens put me in mind of an, almost, tropical landscape before reaching the restaurant on the sands of the private beach. With its blue and white décor, Byblos calls to mind the Mediterranean atmosphere of its Lebanese namesake, which is enhanced with the outdoor seating and the gentle strumming of a talented guitarist. For the lovers, they can even arrange a special romantic setup in a private cabana with a heart carved in the sand and marked out with fairy lights. They’ve recently launched a new concept on weekends from 4.30pm, Sundowners with paired bites, such as kibbeh or Batata Harrah, and we were happy to take a table beachside to experience it. The view is absolutely gorgeous as the sun sinks below the striking Manama skyline, the heavens drifting from pinks to purples and, finally, deep indigo as we sipped on a range of refreshing mocktails and mixed drinks and nibbled on our snacks. I have to admit that, on the evening we went, the weather was a bit fresh but the thoughtful provision of blankets and outdoor heaters allowed us to enjoy this magical view and experience it in comfort.

I had the Pink Lychee – lychee purée with grapefruit and elderflower syrup – sweet, pretty and moreish – with a crunchy rice meatball and pesto sauce, a perfect appetite teaser as we were staying for dinner.

However, as darkness fell, we soon moved to the warmth of the inside space which, behind its glass walls, allows you to enjoy the magnificent vista without the chills. After tucking into some crispy bread with excellent fat olives, our mixed cold mezze arrived.

The pesto hummus was a welcome, interesting variation on the regular, the bright, sweet note of basil making a world of difference to the flavour; the beetroot moutabel was completely new to me – moutabel without eggplant! In this version, the beets are roasted to preserve both their flavour and nutritional value, before being mixed with tahina, feta, mango, walnuts and black and white sesame seeds for a delightful, earthy and satisfying flavour. We also had the hotel’s famed tabbouleh salad, which needs no explanation and was, of course, up to the usual high standard. But my absolute favourite (and that of our friendly server) was the Mafroukit Tajen, a delectable combination of diced chunky veggies, mixed nuts and tahina. Such was the rich texture in this dish that it could easily be a main course, if you are forgoing meat, and I was really impressed by it.

For hot starters we had sujuk – a new addition to the menu and a true taste of Lebanon, that’s meaty, spicy and warming. The meat in these mini sausages is mixed with yellow capsicum and chilli, among other spices, slow seared on the pan and very tasty. We also had manakish, which was superbly crispy topped with cheese, tomatoes and onions. The cheese is Shanklish, which is made from goat labneh boiled and strained and dried in the fridge for several days, then marinated in a mix of herbs for a rich earthy flavour.

Crispy fried cheese rolls gave way to a melting inner of feta, slightly salty akawi and mozzarella with a mix of herbs. The outside was supremely crunchy making the gooey cheese within a wonderful textural surprise.

Then it was time for the mains and we tried two dishes that have just been introduced, having proved very popular during a seafood promotion some months ago. My dining companion was distinctly impressed with the Tiger Prawns – massive and flavourful from marination with garlic oil, lemon, cumin and coriander. The crustaceans were absolutely perfectly cooked with not the slightest hint of toughness and the combination of flavours truly complemented the delicate sweetness of the flesh.

Our second main, and my personal favourite, was the Seabass Tajin – a deeply rich and satisfying take on classic comfort food.

The sauce of tahina with caramelised onions, garlic, chilli, fresh paprika and orange and lemon juice topped with crunchy toasted almonds and black raisins, was absolutely superb. The use of orange juice, alongside the traditional favour for lemon in Lebanese cuisine, added a very slight hint of sweetness. And the overall, with the inclusion of crunchy chips of fried bread, was totally satisfying, the depth and play of the tastes and textures, particularly the firm, chunky fish, was a complete treat for the taste buds, with each nuanced layer exciting a new question of ingredient identity. Chef Tony El Khoury explained that the secret to good Lebanese food is to achieve harmony in the flavours and this was particularly evident in that neither garlic nor chilli – both, potentially,

overwhelming elements – stood out, rather playing their part in achieving that rich depth. And, I can reveal, it tastes even better the next day – I was so impressed, I took a portion home to share. With barely a centimetre of tummy space to spare, we finished our meal with two exceptional desserts. The Baklava, aromatic and crunchy with walnuts, cinnamon and cloves was accompanied by orange yoghurt ice cream, that added the perfect foil to the crisp filo pastry. And, last but definitely not least, the traditional Karabij, which I have somehow managed to miss despite many years in the region. A slightly crazy combination of pistachio base with almond shortcrust crumbles topped with natef ice cream and cotton candy. Beautifully presented, the sugary topping took me straight back to childhood and the homemade ice cream (natef is usually presented as marshmallow) was, almost literally, the icing on a completely indulgent treat. Two mouthfuls were more than enough, but I will definitely go back for more.

Our evening came to a close with a hot cup of tea, a gentle stroll back through the lush gardens and a promise to return for the first anniversary celebrations this month – 12 months since I attended the official opening, it’s easy to see why Byblos has become such a favourite on the island. ✤

A ROYAL FEAST

Dine like a Maharaja at Nirvana restaurant, as Charishma Thankappan experienced when she enjoyed the restaurant's delectable spread and opulent ambience.

It was a chilly winter night, with the biting wind making me shrivel deeper into my jacket. But that also prompted me to hasten my steps towards Nirvana, the Indian finedining restaurant at The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain.

Once inside, the transformation was dramatic and regal. Awash in red, the restaurant’s interiors immediately warmed me up – visually and sensorially. Walls outfitted in crimson velvet, chairs with plush maroon cushions, pillars in rose marbling and a brick-coloured carpet with floral motifs painted the inside of the restaurant in jewel tones, evoking a cosy and balmy ambience. Built in Rajput-style architecture, arches and intricate latticework in wood caught my attention. Antique artefacts included silver storage containers, with retro-style lamps emitting a soft golden light, bathing the entire place in a warm glow. A tabla player and a sitarist provided lilting classical Indian music, completing the setting in true regal style. Luxurious and elegant – there was a majestic aura to the place, as I looked forward to my dinner in great anticipation.

To begin, I was proffered a selection of the latest beverages added to Nirvana’s menu: three non-alcoholic drinks infused with botanical herbs and spices. Anand was a citrussy energiser made with fresh pineapple, orange blossom and angelica. A dusting of chaat masala on the brim added a wacky twist that tingled my taste buds. I Am the One, as the name suggests, was a bold drink made from the King of Spices – garam masala. My tongue felt tickled with hints of coriander seeds, thyme and juniper berries. It was garnished with a large star anise that floated on top in all its imperial glory. My favourite was the refreshing Laila O Laila. A sweet, fruity concoction of watermelon, pomegranate and figs balanced with a contrasting tartness of orange zest, cardamom, carom seeds and orris root.

After whetting my appetite with these intriguing beverages, it was time to relish the appetisers. Dahi Puri, a popular Indian savoury street food, comprised crunchy shells packed with chunks of potatoes and a dollop of yoghurt, topped with tangy and sweet sauce. The burst of contrasting flavours and textures – earthy and sharp, crackling and mushy – made this a fun snack.

Jheenga Til Tinka – batter-fried prawns coated in toasted sesame seeds – tasted deliciously nutty. Soft and meaty inside, wrapped in a bright orange crispy batter, it was perfect when dunked into the delightful mango and sweet chilli sauce. A match made in heaven! Then came the Chowk Ki Tikki – pan-fried potato and pea patties, skilfully crisped on the outside while remaining squishy inside. I dipped the tikki into the wonderfully tangy tamarind chutney and the juices seeped into the potatoes, elevating them to a flavourful mash. Nirvana Ka Murg Tikka – chunks of boneless chicken thigh marinated in yoghurt and spices – lent a dose of fire. Tender and juicy, the chicken cubes were melt-in-the-mouth, revealing layers of flavourful spices with each bite.

I was afraid of filling up after the exquisite nibbles but the arrival of the mains dispelled my fears. Bhindi Do Pyaza – chopped okra cooked with baby onions and mild spices – elicited a nostalgic delight in me. It brought back memories of my childhood, when my mother would pack it in my school lunch box. Dal Tadka – yellow lentils tempered with cumin and coriander seeds – was as homely as it could be. A magical dish, where the humble lentils are enhanced by the zing of cumin coated in fresh ghee, it was a delight to the

senses of taste and smell. Savouring the two dishes with fresh and flaky bread – I was momentarily transported to a cosy personal space, forgetting the restaurant’s grandeur around me.

But the arrival of the next round of mains brought me back to the glorious setting, reminding me of the eatery’s reputation for sumptuous dining. While Nirvana is known primarily for North Indian cuisine, I was treated to delicious meals from all over the country. Erha Kari – prawns simmered in a creamy coconut curry, tempered with mustard seeds and curry leaves – was simply delicious. A South Indian dish, it had a silky, semi-sweet gravy that percolated into the luscious prawns, heightening their freshness. Macher Jhol – a traditional fish curry from Kolkata in Eastern India – was bright yellow and seasoned with aromatic spices. The fresh fish oozed zesty juices with each bite, complementing the side dish of Biryani rice.

It was the final dish, however, that blew me away. Making its appearance in true regal fashion was the Raan-E-Mastaan: a splendid lamb shank, marinated in vibrant spices, slow roasted for three to four hours. The dish has historical origins – said to have been created under the orders of Alexander the Great, who desired a kingly preparation. It arrived in majestic style, adorning the centre of the dish, resting over a bed of rich gravy.

My knife carved the succulent meat with buttery smoothness, as I savoured every bite in heady contentment.

The stately meal deserved a grand finale, and my expectations were met by the Kulfi Popsicle and Rasmalai Tres Leches. A frozen pistachio ice cream encased in white chocolate, the dessert was richly sweet, perfectly complemented by shards of white chocolate and flecks of cardamom crumble and rose confit. Rasmalai Tres Leche was a contemporary take on the traditional Indian delicacy. A flattened ball of cottage cheese that was oh, so cottony soft! It was topped with an innovative bottle-gourd pudding and caramelised nuts, providing an explosion of interesting textures.

The tagline at Nirvana says, ‘Dine Like A Maharaja’ and it was indeed a feast for a king, or queen, in my case. It’s the perfect place to celebrate a grand occasion with family and friends or have a romantic date to treat your significant other in true regal style. ✤

BRUNCHING AT ITS BEST

Memories built around good food is one of the best ways to spend the weekend, as

Fernanda Langhammer experienced when she headed to Baharat for a fabulous brunch.

What is the best thing to do on a Friday in Bahrain? Go for a brunch! With many options available, it can be difficult to choose but, for me, they need to have a mix of nice ambience, excellent food and refreshing drinks. Baharat at Le Méridien City Centre Bahrain offers this combo with a great location added to the blend. It was Friday, and we woke up in brunch mood, so we put on our best weekend frocks and headed to Le Méridien. We left our car with the valet parking (it's complimentary for those joining the brunch; you just need to get the ticket stamped), and right after crossing through the revolving door, Baharat was on our right. Much to everyone’s delight, a massive dessert display welcomed us into the restaurant – the brunch is well-known for offering one of the most extensive selections of sweets on the island. We had to check them out before going to our table and plan our food intake to leave as much space as possible for them.

We chose one of the tables that mixes sofa and chairs for a comfortable dining experience. The décor is inspired by Middle Eastern elements, such as Moroccan blue tiles covering some of the walls and columns, giving an elegant yet traditional feel. Turkish lamps with their colourful glass mosaic pattern hanging from the ceiling, creating a unique lighting effect, was my favourite touch.

The well-planned food display makes everything easy to reach without a crowded sensation, with a perfect flow from salads

and appetisers to warm food and live stations. I started with the Levantine Fattoush salad – it's always my go-to pick. In my opinion, it is one of the best combinations with cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, iceberg lettuce, fresh herbs and toasted pita bread for the extra crunch, bathed in lemon vinaigrette dressing with a touch of sumac and pomegranate molasses, yum! Refreshing and an excellent way to start the feast. I also went for the classic hummus, moutabel and muhammara to eat with my bread choices. I didn't even try to resist the Poached Pears Goat Cheese and Potato Harra Salad and got a small portion of each; both options were delicious.

I have to confess that I have a thing or two for fried hot appetisers, so I visited the area where they were displayed and filled my plate with prawns, fish and calamari – all covered in a crunchy batter – I know it is not the healthiest choice, but the satisfaction of bitting into a crispy shell and finding warm meat inside made me forget about any downside.

While exploring the food choices, I met Complex Executive Chef Mohammad Ali, who explained the brunch concept and focus on seafood (perfect for a country on an island). He also mentioned the importance of the live stations, highlighting the two that were my and my dining companions' favourite aspects of the brunch: the sushi and ceviche counters. The ceviche spot is under the close attention of Peruvian Chef Brayan. With salmon, tuna, prawn and scallop options as a base for the dish, there is an array of accompaniments, such as avocado, mango, corn, coriander and

onion. However, the magic relies on the Leche de Tigre, the liquid mixture composed of lemon, ginger, onion, Rocoto chillies, fish stock, celery and ice, all well-blended, resulting in an aromatic juice that 'cooks' the raw fish while delivering a delectable taste to it. If you know this dish well, you can make your own combination or let Chef Brayan mix and match the ingredients for an authentic result. One of my dining mates visited the station three times – if you have any questions about whether it is worth trying.

However, if you are not a fan of seafood and still want to enjoy the live stations, there is a Mexican corner with tacos, nachos, guacamole, salsa and all the staples to enjoy this popular cuisine. There is also a pasta counter, where you can choose a red or white sauce and many ingredients to create your own dish. But if you like elevated flavours, the Fois Gras Station must be the right stop for you. This delicacy is beautifully prepared by the chefs and placed on a bed of bread, fruits and raspberry sauce. There are way too many warm dishes to list, but I will highlight some of them. We tried the Hammour Singari Bahrain Style, which was perfectly cooked and covered with a layer of spices that added character to the fish. The Beef Brisket was tender, with natural juices in every bite, making it a good pick for meat lovers.

The Potato Dauphinoise (also known as Potato au Gratin) is a decadent French recipe made with thin slices of potato cooked in cream, topped with cheese and then baked. This comforting dish was the best accompaniment to the brisket for its soft texture and easy-to-pair flavour.

Completely satisfied with our savoury bites, it was time to return to the restaurant entrance to delve into the sweet universe. I love,

love, love Sticky Date Pudding and Umm Ali, so they were my first picks, and they did not disappoint. Both were super warm and moist, as expected, with a touch of spices, absolutely perfect. We also tried the Tiramisu, which was light and had the right amount of coffee. I ordered an Americano because there is nothing better for me than a warm cup of coffee and a slice of cake. I chose the Signature of the Brunch, an almond cake with vanilla filling that hit the spot wonderfully. But you also find gateaux, cheesecakes, macarons, cupcakes, a chocolate fountain and much more. The entertainment included a special performance by the Flamenco duo Salvi and Pabla from The Westin's restaurant, Salero. An unexpected presentation that amazed all the guests. With happy tummies, we left with a feeling of a well-spent Friday. Fantastic food, lively ambience, beautiful décor, cooling drinks –we will be back! ✤

DISCOVER QATAR

A four-day trip to Doha revealed the country’s magic. Apple Sharma explored the city and all it has to offer, from National Day festivities and stunning cultural landmarks to luxurious hospitality, all perfectly curated by Visit Qatar.

For those seeking a quick getaway from Bahrain or elsewhere in the GCC, Doha should definitely be on the list. While I've visited the city many times, my recent trip, courtesy of Visit Qatar, offered an extraordinary perspective on this vibrant metropolis. From festive celebrations to serene desert escapes, Doha proved itself as a city that celebrates its past while embracing the future.

Day 1: A Cultural Welcome

I arrived in style via Qatar Airways, First Class from Bahrain, a luxurious experience with impeccable service and seamless travel through Hamad International Airport’s Maha Services. My home for the next few days was The Ned Doha, a grand hotel located in the former Ministry of Interior building. This impressive property houses seven restaurants, 90 bedrooms and event venues, as well as a private members’ club with access to a rooftop terrace, a health club with spa, gym and a 30m outdoor pool. My Medium Palace View room, adorned with 1970s-inspired design elements, offered a cosy retreat with sweeping views of the sea and the Amiri Diwan.

After settling in, my media friends and I headed to Katara Cultural Village, a vibrant hub of art, culture and heritage. Starting at the beautiful Blue Mosque, which has the same design as its original Türkiye counterpart, we wandered past the Pigeon Tower, the Gold Mosque and meandering

alleyways filled with art galleries, museums and studios. A fantastic place to soak in culture, it is also home to the marvellous open-air Katara Amphitheatre, inspired by Greek architecture. For retail therapy, the village offers luxury shopping at 21 High Street – a glamourous destination, dotted with Murano glass structures and unique cafés and restaurants. Home to the famous Galeries Lafayette department store, it was also the first street in the city to have outdoor air conditioning. After a leisurely walk, we headed towards Katara Corniche, which was buzzing with National Day festivities. We passed through several car displays, upon which artists were painting scenes and national symbols. A fantastic demonstration by the Qatari Armed Forces in collaboration with the Military Parade Center was a delight to watch, along with other lively activities, including a traditional Qatari ‘Arda’ dance, children’s theatre, musical performances and market stalls. We ended the day with dinner at Feeh Al'Aafia, enjoying a feast of authentic Qatari cuisine – an unforgettable introduction to Doha.

Day 2: A National Celebration

Qatar National Day began at the iconic Souq Waqif, a traditional marketplace brimming with history and charm. Breakfast at Shay Al Shomous, owned by Shams AlQassabi, was a heartwarming experience. The first businesswoman to own a shop and restaurant at Souq Waqif, Shams is renowned for her traditional Qatari breakfast, with people queueing up to try her culinary offerings. She also has a spice shop close by, offering special aromatic mixes. Walking through the souq’s maze-like alleys, we admired everything from little shops selling local trinkets and artefacts, to local majlises, cafés and restaurants. A major landmark in the heart of the souq is the ‘Pouse’ (thumb in French) sculpture by artist César Baldaccini. This juxtaposition of old and new highlights Doha’s unique identity. The bustling market, with its mud-daubed façades and narrow alleyways, transported me to a bygone era, while reminding me of Qatar’s thriving cultural heartbeat. The celebrations continued at Darb Al Saai, one of the best places to immerse yourself in local culture and experience Qatari heritage up close. This year’s National Day activities included folk arts, heritage exhibitions and theatrical performances. The energy of the crowd, dressed in traditional attire and waving Qatari flags, was contagious, as we joined in the celebrations. We ended the evening in style with dinner at The Ned’s beautiful Levantine garden restaurant, Hadika, which offered delicious Middle Eastern fare. While at Lusail, the city skyline came alight with a spectacular fireworks display – a fitting tribute to the nation’s spirit and progress.

Day 3: Stories of the Past and Future

A busy third day started with Msheireb Downtown Doha – a smart and sustainable district merging cuttingedge innovation with traditional heritage. The Msheireb

Katara Towers
Galeries
Lafayette at Katara

Museums, housed in four restored heritage buildings, offered profound insights into Qatar’s history through interactive exhibits and traditional artefacts. Hopping on to a tram, another charming feature at Msheireb, is one of the best ways to sightsee the entire area. We explored Al Kahraba Street, the oldest and first street in Qatar to receive electricity, and the dynamic Doha Design District, featuring galleries, studios, boutiques and creative workshops. Msheireb Downtown Doha demonstrates perfectly how Qatar balances its cultural roots with a forward-thinking approach to urban development.

Next on the agenda was the National Museum of Qatar, designed by Jean Nouvel – a masterclass in architecture and storytelling. The stunning exterior, resembling a desert rose, is matched by an equally impressive interior, with exhibits vividly narrating Qatar’s journey from the past to the future. Lunch at Jiwan restaurant by legendary French chef Alain Ducasse, located on the fourth floor of the museum, offered not only incredible cuisine but also some of the most stunning sea views of the city. The evening was spent exploring Lusail and Place Vendôme, both embodying Qatar’s modern luxury.

We started at the iconic Lusail Stadium – a symbol of Qatar’s FIFA World Cup legacy – and continued on Lusail Boulevard, with its gleaming towers and vibrant nightlife. We ended at Katara Towers, the architectural masterpiece on Lusail Marina, home to two luxury hotels – Raffles Doha on one side and Fairmont Doha on the other.

Our next stop, Place Vendôme, has to be one of the most beautiful malls I’ve seen in the region, with its palatial setting and grand architecture. Its charming canal and stunning Dancing Fountains are not to be missed. Dinner

National Museum of Qatar
Katara Amphitheatre
Msheireb Downtown

at La Petite Maison (LPM) Doha on Al Maha Island brought a chic French twist to the evening, rounding off another enriching experience.

Day 4: Desert Magic

On our final day, we explored the Mina District, a picturesque waterfront development filled with cobbled streets, quaint pastel-coloured buildings, coffee shops, eateries and a stunning fish market. Lunch at Chabrat Al Mina, voted as the Best Seafood Restaurant in Qatar, is a must for all seafood lovers.

The highlight of the trip for me, however, was a visit to Ras Abrouq, an authentic desert experience located at the edge of the UNESCO-protected Al-Reem Biosphere Reserve. Here there's plenty to discover, with its ongoing winter season running until January 18. An easy drive in a 4x4, the journey took us through the Zekreet Peninsula – its unique natural limestone formations giving the place an ethereal feel. The area is also home to Richard Serra’s East-West/ West-East installation in the Brouq nature reserve. This public art sculpture, with its towering steel plates spanning over 1km, was stunning against the stark desert landscape. We explored the ghostly Zekreet Film City, where Bedouinstyle village architecture meets creative art and music. The buzzing atmosphere of this charming place included live music, dance performances, workshops and traditional arts and crafts, as well as local food offerings and plenty of photo opportunities. We then ventured on a desert safari, a first for me. Observing oryx, deer and addax in their natural habitat, framed by a glowing sunset, was nothing short of magical. We soon headed to Desert Escape, where we caught a traditional dance performance, with other cultural activities and workshops on offer, including calligraphy and water colour painting. There’s also an art exhibition by AlHosh Galley showcasing interesting pieces by local artists, while children can enjoy trampolines embedded in the sand. The area is also home to another desert installation, which looks like a mushroom-like rock with a podium, featured in many a film, and a popular Instagram-worthy photo op. The evening concluded with an unforgettable dinner under the stars at Humo by Vicente Vidal, set amidst stunning limestone formations. With mezze platters and grilled meats, this one-of-a-kind, open-fire barbecue experience by Chef Vicente of Our Habitas Ras Abrouq celebrated the desert’s rugged beauty with refined culinary artistry. The live traditional music and intimate setting created an atmosphere of warmth and celebration, perfectly capturing the spirit of the trip.

CAPTURING COLOURS AND CULTURES

Talented Omani-Lebanese travel photographer and colour designer, Rana Khadra, will be gracing the shores of Bahrain for her upcoming exhibition, Ala Rasi, at La Fontaine Centre of Contemporary Art. In an exclusive interview, Apple Sharma caught up with the artist behind the camera, ahead of her visit to the island this month.

You have an incredible knack for capturing cultures through your lens. What inspires or influences you as an artist in the way you see and photograph the world?

I guess I have a deep quest for connecting human beings, for showing the world to those who don’t have a chance to see, for illustrating people in their deepest, purest form. Through my photography, I want to showcase the beauty of different cultures, connecting one to the other because in some way, human beings are all the same.

Your exhibition, Ala Rasi, explores the significance of the head and what people adorn it with. What’s one story from the collection that surprised or moved you most, and why? The head piece is a sign of belonging, pride, a connection to history, ancestry and it says a lot. Ala Rasi explores the idea of what the head piece means but it also has the metaphoric meaning ‘at your service’. Of all the people I met, it was Abu Abbas, whom I met on Al Mutannabi Street in Baghdad, whose story moved me the most. He sells fabrics and, much like all Iraqis, he recited poetry as he spoke to me and welcomed me. This is why I chose him as my main photo [in the exhibition] – he embodies Arabs, with his welcoming words, hospitality and beautiful language, literally saying the words ‘ala rasi’ to me while placing his hands on his head. This is where I got the idea of the exhibition from.

Colour plays an important role in your work as a designer and photographer. If you could describe your personality as a colour palette, what shades would be in it and why?

Rana Khadra is definitely a green! It was both given to me by birth [Khadra means green in Arabic] but also what I would choose. I’m quite peaceful, I can adapt easily, I can go from a soft sweet green to a deep emerald. Of course, as a colour designer, I go through phases and different facets of my personality but green and white are my personality. Although, I’m currently obsessing over red.

You believe beautiful people make beautiful places. Is there a particular encounter or destination that inspired this idea or holds special meaning for you?

Honestly? I believe every place has beauty if you look for it and every human also has beauty. You just have to find it. We live in a world where sometimes the ugly prevails. I try to show people that if you want to see beauty, it’s not hard to find. I’m deeply connected to the Arab world and mostly capture the beauty in our culture.

Your travels are a big part of your storytelling. What’s the one item you always carry with you on your journeys, besides your camera?

I carry a smile and an open mind.

How many countries have you visited so far and which is next on your photography bucket list?

I’ve travelled to 49 countries so far but I don’t really count; I visit the same country twice and three times and explore

other areas. Next, I’ll be touring the Middle East again hoping to capture some more!

If you had to create a colour to represent the energy of Bahrain, what would it be called, and what would it look like?

Soft, sweet, warm, cultured, raw. I would choose a light terracotta brown, like rock sugar. ✤

The Six Triple Eight Black Doves

Need to Know:

The Six Triple Eight is a 2024 American War Drama film released on Netflix. It depicts the plight of World War II’s only all-black women's battalion that was tasked to carry out a mission deemed impossible.

Director: Tyler Perry

Cast: Kerry Washington, Ebony Obsidian

Why Is It Worth Watching?

Looking for unknown stories from World War II? Then this is a must-watch. Writers Kevin Hymel and Tyler Perry have brought to life a story and, more importantly, characters, who played a small but mighty role in propelling the US Army during the war.

The 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, led by Captain Charity Adams, played by Kerry Washington, is responsible for sorting through a three-year backlog of undelivered mail, sent by American soldiers and their families to each other. The women of the military division are faced with the mammoth duty of going through the mail – a staggering 17 million pieces – within six months. And it is not the only challenge the women confront. Being all-women and black, the contingent faces discrimination and misogyny. That’s where Captain Adams steers the squadron to not only accomplish their mission but do so within 90 days. Armed with a steely resolve and a never-say-die spirit, she is a figure of furious femininity and ruthless leadership. Watch it for one of Kerry Washington’s career-best performances and a story that needs to be heard and known for the crucial contributions of a ‘cog in the wheel’ that deserves its due credit in the pages of history.

Like any good spy story with a twist, Black Doves is not just about intrigue, it takes on the big issues of love, loyalty and global politics with aplomb.

Need to Know:

A spy story with a difference – these guys are not working for their country but rather for the highest bidder. When a dangerous situation implodes, vengeance is called for.

Creators: Joe Barton

Cast: Keira Knightley, Ben Whishaw, Sarah Lancashire

Why Is It Worth Watching?

Helen, played by Keira Knightly, is a mother of twins seemingly happily married to the British Minister of Defence until an apparently random murder on the banks of the River Thames brings her world crashing down.

It quickly emerges that the man is Helen’s lover and she is anything but the archetypal politician’s wife but rather a member of the Black Doves, a paid spy! A visit from her ‘controller’ during a swanky party introduces us to the oddly menacing Reed, played by, Sarah Lancashire, whose performance really shows the depth of her talent.

When Helen and her family come under threat, Reed brings in Helen’s old colleague, Sam, to protect her and hunt down the killers, while the diplomat’s wife turns into a highly-skilled avenger in the quest for her lover’s killers.

The series cleverly weaves in both Sam and Helen’s back stories, explaining how they came to be involved in high-stakes political intrigue and violence. And, though we know we should not, we actually find ourselves rooting for the spies turned assassins.

Like any good spy story with a twist, Black Doves is not just about intrigue, it takes on the big issues of love, loyalty and global politics with aplomb. If you try it and love it as much as we did, you’ll be glad to know Season 2 had already been commissioned before the first show ever hit our screens.

ON THE RECORD

THRILLER/SUSPENSE

Beautiful Ugly

Looking for something refreshing and fearlessly original? Lend your ears to this latest retro-style album. Lauren Mayberry, the vocalist and percussionist of the Scottish synth-pop band Chvrches has finally come up with a solo album. Vicious Creature remains true to her 80s’ style of pop. Comprising 12 tracks, the album meanders from energetic beats to mellow melodies. Something in the Air and Crocodile Tears are dynamic, anthems of a bold and spirited woman. Punch Drunk is a forceful, high-energy number that delves into her tumultuous mind as she navigates the turbulences of life.

Anywhere But Dancing and Oh, Mother bring out the softened rhythms, the latter stemming from personal space, with the singer addressing her family’s state, gripped by sickness.

With songs written in ballad style, the singer showcases her raw emotions, taking the listener through highs and lows, palpable through the music. Gritty lyrics like ‘I change shapes 'til I get what I want from you

'It's your game, now you're mad that I learned the rules

'We're all snakes, but what else is a girl supposed to do?’

stamp the solo singer’s space – a stepping out and apart from the band, away from her image of being ‘one of the boys’ alongside Chvrches band members Ian Cook, Martin Doherty and Jonny Scott. At just under 38 minutes, the album is a breeze. Vicious Creature is Lauren’s uninhibited ode to femininity and is a fierce expression of her breaking free.

K-Pop music’s BLACKPINK member Roseanne Park, better known as Rosé, has struck out with her debut solo album Rosie. Comprising 12 songs, it traces the trajectory of romantic love in all its stages – from starry-eyed attraction to heartbreak and finally acceptance and moving on.

Number One Girl and 3am are youthful numbers reminiscent of Y2K tunes. Detailing young love, the lyrics are filled with hope, longing and carefreeness.

Two Years and Toxic till The End mark a plateauing and the beginning of a dip in the graph of relationships as the singer grapples with her complicated emotions. Drinks Or Coffee and APT. are high-energy, peppy tracks, with the latter, a colab with Bruno Mars, going viral on social media. Not The Same and Call It the End mark the bitter but learning phases of her emotional journey, where the singer is beginning to comprehend the tough realities of life and relationships. The songs grow in maturity with more soulful and melodic rhythms, delineating her personal journey. The final track – Dance All Night – raises the album’s arc again as it indicates a young girl’s triumph in overcoming setbacks. Rosie is a radically different take from the K-pop singer’s previous works with her band, as it reveals a peak into the singer’s personality and personal life. The tracks are an interesting mix, ranging from R&B and Taylor-Swiftlike-pop to a piano ballad, and trap and synth tunes. While some may find the transitions jarring; Rosé fans are sure to enjoy the ride.

Anything that comes with a recommendation from the master of suspense himself, Harlan Coben, is sure to grab our interest.

When author Grady Green calls his wife as she is driving to share exciting news, his good day turns very bad. He hears Abby slam on the brakes, get out of the car, then nothing. When he eventually finds her vehicle by a cliff edge, his wife has disappeared.

A year later, still overcome with grief, he travels to a tiny Scottish island to try to get his life back on track. Then he sees the impossible – a woman who looks exactly like his missing wife.

Blood and the Badge: The Mafia, Two Killer Cops, and a Scandal That Shocked the Nation

Former New York Times editor Michael Cannell unearths the full story behind Louis Eppolito and Stephen Caracappa, two decorated New York detectives who acted as double agents for the Mafia in 1980s’ Brooklyn.

For more than 10 years, the pair handed over the names of mobsters secretly cooperating with the government and crippled investigations by sharing details of surveillance, phone taps and impending arrests.

When their wrongdoings initially came to light, it appeared they would get off through lack of evidence. But years later, another cop’s determination to get to the truth led to the pair being sentenced to life in prison.

What We’re (Still) Talking About

New Year, New Job?

We spotted an article in Britain’s Daily Mail newspaper that has us questioning our whole existence. Apparently, the rise in the number of dot.com billionaires and other assorted nouveau riche has led to a corresponding leap in the demand for professionally trained butlers.

Once the preserve of old-money aristocracy, it seems these days, the butler – preferably with legitimate Queen’s English accent – is something of a status symbol, particularly for oligarchs, Chinese businesspeople, Indian tech billionaires and, unsurprisingly, oil-rich Middle Easterners.

And the rewards can be substantial, with salaries up to USD300,000, million-dollar bonuses, cars, watches and private jet travel to the most exclusive destinations. It all sounds rather wonderful. However, if you’re suddenly considering a career change, be aware that a butler’s job can involve anything from silver service at the dining table to protecting your employer’s privacy. One butler even explained his duties encompassed transplanting a fully-grown tree to his employ’s garden and using an army helicopter to search for the family’s lost dog. Reckon you’re qualified? Join the queue, who needs a media degree anyway?

Discovering The Well Hidden

You’d be forgiven for thinking that, in this day and age, with satellites and other eyes in the sky seemingly observing our every move, there couldn’t be much left to surprise us. So, the news that several new species of flora and fauna were discovered during 2024 gave us a sense of wonderment and not a little awe.

The BBC reports that, over the past year, scientists at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, in London, UK, and their collaborators, have classified around 149 plants and 23 fungi from all corners of the globe. Now, that’s all very well, but regular readers of this page will have spotted that we’re somewhat obsessed with fourlegged creatures. So, the discovery of a

vampire hedgehog – no spikes just some seriously pointy teeth – found in Vietnam, and the Cao Bang Crocodile newt – cute little critters, all black with orange tips on their toes – also unearthed in Vietnam, led us down a Google research wormhole, where we learnt loads and started plotting our own future research trips. One place we think we’ll be avoiding is the Alto Mayo region of Peru, where researchers made ‘a shocking discovery’ in the shape of a mysterious blob-headed fish. A type of bistlemouth armoured catfish, we have to say, it’s kinda ugly. But, with the natural world under ever increasing threat, it’s good to know that these curiosities are still going strong and our Earth can still surprise us.

That’s Dedication

What would you do if you became a social media sensation. Imagine, you make a YouTube or TikTok video and, before you know it, you’ve racked up hundreds of thousands of views. It’s the stuff of dreams, right? Perhaps an entry to the world of fame and fortune and certainly an opportunity to give up the day job.

But not if you’re Miles Laflin, from Bedfordshire, UK. A pool cleaner for many years, he began making work-based content and became known as The Pool Guy. It seems bizarre that videos of a

man cleaning a pool would be interesting or popular but, one such shoot of him cleaning some pool steps has recorded a massive 170 million views on TikTok.

The success hasn’t gone to his head though. Having won the high-quality content creator of the year title at the first UK and Ireland TikTok awards, Miles shared that he still cleans pools – but now he travels around the world doing it and continues to make videos in the process. He said: "It's quite crazy to think that many people have seen my videos." But he’s firmly of the opinion that, no matter what your job, there’s an audience for videos about it. Now, where did we put that recorder?
