"You can have anything you want in life if you dress for it." Edith Head
The Holy Month is over and it’s a time of renewal across the city with much to see and do in the months ahead. The spring weather is balmy and this month our thoughts turn to the hottest new season fashions.
While fashion trends are an area I always keep a half eye on for our regular style pages, I had great fun helping put together our cover story featuring this season’s hot-off-the-catwalk looks. I have to say, going through reems of images, it struck me that fashion can, at times, be a bit ridiculous. But, of course, we have to bear in mind that what we see on models at the many Fashion Weeks, is generally not intended for everyday consumption. So, we’ve picked a selection of the less outlandish looks to help with your spring wardrobe refresh.
Elsewhere, my lucky colleagues have been out and about across the city checking out lots of restaurants – the Fact Dining Awards are drawing near and we’re happily doing our bit. We sampled Thai, Mexican, Southeast Asian and some super tasty, healthy fare. And sticking with the healthy theme, we also tried a spot of pampering at Saray Spa which was a total journey to relaxation.
Our travel pages this month feature a rather wonderful trip to Bali where my colleague checked out local homes and a fab cooking class – not jealous, not even a little bit. But, at least I got to chat to two of Qatar’s favourite chefs.
As always, we’ve rounded up news from the worlds of motoring and tech – parents will be particularly interested in the almost kid-proof new offerings from Acer – and there’s loads of info on coming events. I’m particularly looking forward to all the tribute acts coming to The Backyard this month. Will I see you there?
Until next time.

Aerobatics displays, drone shows and pyrotechnics are just some of the attractions coming to town as part of the Lusail Sky Festival.
The largest event of its kind in the region, the festival will take place at Al Saad Plaza from April 3 to 5, running from 4pm to 10pm, with free activities for the whole family.
There’ll be an array of aerial performances, including international aerobatics, skydiving, skywriting demonstrations and high-speed jet displays. Planes will weave intricate formations with coloured smoke, laser displays and aerial pyrotechnics.
Adding to the spectacle, the festival will include skydiving demonstrations, nightly laser and fireworks displays synchronised with music and light effects and an extraordinary drone show featuring more than 3,000 illuminated drones and 150 aircraft equipped with pyrotechnics, creating mesmerising imagery in the night sky.

Qatar’s favourite am-dram group is at it again with another great show for you. Doha Players are staging Little Shop of Horrors, from April 9 to 18 and, let’s face it, you’d have to be daft to miss it.
Billed as the story of ‘A killer plant, a florist and a love story gone wild!’ the show promises to be great fun. If you don’t know the story, we’re not going to spoil it but it’s safe to say there are blood-thirsty goings on coupled with a hint of good old-fashioned jealousy –perhaps not the best themes for a younger audience – but there’s also a bucketload of great music and lots of slapstick.
The show’s running at THIS Theatre from April 9 to 18 with performances at 2.30pm and 7.30pm. Tickets start at QR40 and are available from q-tickets.com ✤

The weather’s changing and it’s time to revamp our wardrobes for the new season. We checked out the catwalks and collections to cast our fashion eye over the latest offerings and indulge in a spot of trend spotting. From the ever-present classics to retro looks and surprising colour choices, read on for the hottest looks for the hot days ahead.
Though plaid, and its many variations, is a usually a staple of the winter season, the checkered fabric made a noticeable appearance on the spring – summer catwalks, with some houses, such as FENDI, even introducing their own tartans.
Perhaps predictably, Brunello Cucinelli went for a gorgeously muted classic design while dunhill opted for an unexpected combo of shorts (another of the season’s big trends) and a lumberjack-style shirt, which was also seen at Coach. Valentino brought out several lightweight versions, continuing the trend in its accessories, while Louis Vuitton doubled down on its everpopular check motif across the New Formal collection.
In women’s wear the trend was on display at Boss and Coach, which each featured classic suiting in muted, almost barelythere checks, while at Valentino the checkerboard went retro in bright eyecatching style. And the lumberjack style was back Collina Strada with a snug looking jacket paired with a puffball skirt for a little quirkiness.
For sure florals and prints are never far from our fashion thoughts as spring comes around. And this year is no exception. Designers from Versace to Michael Kors Collection featured beautifully patterned dresses and jackets that fully capture the spirit of the season. Brunello Cucinelli showed off a grown-up version, a shorter length muted print, while at KENZO, overblown blooms were teamed with tassels for fresh jungle style, and McQueen even brought the floral feel to its special seasonal collection of pink pyjamas.
This season’s menswear also got the floral treatment with KENZO and Versace creating matching men’s and women’s pieces. At John Richmond, the patterns were smaller and prettier but no less eye-catching, while Qasimi went for one oversized print on a dark background. Both KENZO and John Richmond also showed strategically placed floral embellishment to great effect.
Winter’s sombre hues gave way to a whole host of spring-like shades across the runways and seasonal campaigns. Ice-cream coloured suiting at dunhill, Brunello Cucinelli and Versace presented a duality of masculine tailoring contrasted with more classically feminine shades from baby blue to subtle pale yellows. At Qasimi and John Richmond the forms were more relaxed with pants and shorts boasting voluminous lines while Valentino carried the theme over to colourful accessories and shorts.
There was more than a touch of whimsy at Valentino as the collection went full-on pastel from dresses to turbans and even jewellery, while at John Richmond women’s pieces mimicked the men’s line in both cut and colour. Qasimi put on a risqué display with asymmetrical shapes and semi-translucent fabrics while Tom Ford went gloriously retro in mint-green tassels, a trend that also made an appearance at KENZO. At Versace the muted shades were paired to great effect creating an almost gentle clash.
Back to the future! The ‘80s, ‘90s, noughties; they were all there on the season’s runways as retro themes took inspiration from decades long past. John Richmond displayed a decidedly punky vibe with metallics and fishnets while Valentino went fabulously tacky with animal print, faux fur and lurex, all in one outfit! Versace was moderately more subdued with clashing prints in shiny fabrics paired with Missoni-esqu zig-zags and KENZO displayed slash-effect fabrics in dresses and tees. It’s truly the season of anything goes.
The ‘80s, ‘the decade that style forgot’ seems to have been behind an awful lot of this season’s men’s fashions. From punky, embellished string vests at KENZO and Jil Sander Resort to gorgeously, quirkily goth at John Richmond and, of course, the reliably slightly bonkers Valentino where clashing styles, from ankle-fighting trousers to scarves worn as headbands, gloriously captured several trends in one go.
The classics are a trend that never goes away but, this season, there are some subtly interesting updates. Louis Vuitton introduced gold embroidered detailing on a beautifully tailored dark suit while Qasimi played with origami-style cuts to produce an almost ethereal ensemble. Boss and Michael Kors Collection both styled suits with plenty of layering, perfect for unpredictable spring weather, while COS and Brunello Cuninelli stuck to classically beautiful tailoring with some unexpected colour combinations.
In womenswear, white was a big story in both dresses and suiting. Brunello Cucinelli came up with a loose-fitting pant suit, relaxed yet perfectly formal, while Michael Kors Collection went whiteon-white with an embellished dress topped by an oversized jacket. Leather joined the story at COS in a gorgeous petrol blue shade and Boss also went for blue in a darker shade. Coach also brought out the skins in a gorgeous soft leather suit.
FACT spent a day with the new Jeep Wrangler, a stylish and versatile off-road SUV, ready to take on any terrain.
Producing iconic 4x4 commercial vehicles since the late 1940s, Jeep is renowned for being the authentic SUV brand whose cars deliver legendary off-road capability, interior refinement, high-tech features and versatility to lucky owners worldwide. This month, FACT was invited by Jeep Qatar United Cars Almana to test drive the new Jeep Wrangler, a vehicle that is carving out a legacy of its own.
Having tried several Jeep models in recent years, including the 2019 Jeep Wrangler Sahara, the 2022 Grand Jeep Cherokee L and the 2023 Grand Wagoneer, we were excited to see what the 2025 Jeep Wrangler Sport S model had to offer.
As soon as the immediately recognisable figure of the midsized, four-door, off-road SUV came into view, we began to spot updates to the sculpted design. Although a few changes have been made to the flanks (such as the new wheel design) and the rear, the most noticeable changes can be seen upfront.
Amongst the traditional Jeep design cues, the 2025 Wrangler Sport’s classic seven-slot grille has been enhanced with black textured vertical slots – now slimmer and designed to improve cooling –along with neutral grey metallic bezels and body-coloured surround.
A new trail-ready stealth antenna has been integrated into the front windshield, replacing the previous steel mast version. This feature streamlines the vehicle’s appearance, eliminating brush
or tree limb snags when off-road adventuring.
A black, three-piece hardtop endows the 2025 model with an even tougher-looking exterior, while LED front, rear and fog lamps ensure the best visibility in all conditions.
To protect critical car components while on the trail, including the fuel tank, transfer case and automatic transmission oil pan, the artisans at Jeep have also equipped the SUV with four ruggedlooking skid plates.
Shifting our attention to the inside, we were met by a polished interior loaded with premium features and in-car tech.
Our first focal point was the traditional centre stack, featuring a clean, sculpted form that complemented the horizontal dashboard design. The wrapped instrument panel has new soft-touch surfaces and contrast stitching, adding a touch of class to an already impressive interior. We also spotted new AMPS (Attachment Mounting Pattern Standard) bracket provisions on top of the dash. Even more impressive was the all-new 12.3-inch touchscreen sitting prominently atop the centre stack, just above the new slim rectangular inboard air vent. This is the most advanced and largest display ever offered in a Wrangler, housing the fifthgeneration award-winning Uconnect 5 system.
We soon discovered that Uconnect 5 delivers operating speeds that are five times faster compared to the previous generation. Using an Android operating system and over-the-air (OTA)
updates ensures flexibility, allowing for constant evolution. This means continuous new content, features and services. This system is also compatible with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, featuring a fully customisable home screen with one-touch operation. It even provides simultaneous connectivity for two Bluetooth-enabled phones.
As everyone knows, Jeep is king when it comes to off-road adventuring. This mantle has been earned through decades of delivering outstanding 4x4 performance. The new Wrangler certainly lives up to the reputation.
Powering the 2025 model is a 2.0-litre turbocharged inline fourcylinder engine equipped with engine stop-start (ESS). This brawny motor delivers 270hp and 400Nm of torque, while seamlessly integrating with a standard eight-speed automatic transmission. Setting off along the roads, we enjoyed the real sense of power behind the accelerator pedal, relishing the responsiveness of the vehicle.
Once we steered the SUV onto the rough, it really began to show off its superior capabilities. No matter where we directed the Wrangler, it effortlessly ate up the terrain. Directing the 4x4 over thick sand or rocky areas, we always felt completely confident in the vehicle’s capabilities and had to smile at how easily it negotiated such challenging ground.
With the turbo strategically mounted directly to the cylinder head for enhanced durability and a dedicated cooling circuit effectively regulating the air intake temperature, throttle body and turbocharger, the 2.0-litre L-4 engine is a testament to Jeep’s continuous innovation.
Safety was paramount when developing the new 2025 Jeep Wrangler, which offers more than 85 available active and passive safety and security features.
Standard on all models for 2025 are first- and second-row side curtain airbags, along with driver and passenger front airbags and front seat-mounted driver and passenger side airbags. Additionally, the 2025 model marks an upgrade to the safety specifications by including Automatic Emergency Braking, further enhancing the Wrangler’s commitment to driver and passenger protection.
The new model also features second-row outboard seatbelts with pre-tensioners and load limiters, as well as structural improvements for side-impact performance.
The standard ADAS (advanced driver’s assistance system) includes forward collision warning and advanced cruise control with stop and blind spot detection with rear cross-path. ParkSense front and rear park-assist system, ParkView rear backup camera with dynamic grid lines, traction control and electronic stability control (ESC) with electronic roll mitigation are all equipped as standard on the new Wrangler.
The new Jeep Wrangler is a testament to the brand’s unwavering mission to top the off-road SUV segment. ✤ GO: CALL 800 7552 OR VISIT JEEP-QATAR.COM FOR MORE INFORMATION OR TO

Founder of Hide Doha – the number one ranked nightclub in Qatar – award-winning DJ and Kristies Lab Qatar Country Director – Dimitri
masterfully blends music, luxury and entrepreneurship to redefine Qatar's nightlife and luxury branding landscape. He spoke to FACT about his multiple passions.
You hold a BSc in Interior Architecture and a master’s in construction management. How did you go from that to becoming an award-winning DJ, what drove this passion?
Music and design are both art forms. Personally, I believe they speak the same creative language. This is why I feel so connected to everything that involves music, design and creative experiences. Their correlation has fundamentally shaped who I am today, teaching me to see patterns in chaos, find rhythm in structure and always create with both logic and soul. My work has always been about solving problems in a way that fits people's personalities and lifestyles, making sure every detail resonates. I've always believed that music is one of the most powerful tools we have. It carries messages, brings joy and unites people beyond gender, culture or religion. Just like architecture, it builds harmony and connection. This dual perspective has forged my character: part precision, part passion, always seeking the balance between calculated design and spontaneous creativity. I started my DJ career at 12 years old and gained recognition at 18 and that is what continues to drive me. I don't just follow the usual path. I love bringing this idea to life, in motion, in every challenge I take on.
What’s the style of music you’re best known for?
My musical journey has evolved across two distinct styles, each with its own identity. Early in my DJ career, I built my reputation on hip hop, R&B and soul. These genres shaped my first brand, Dimix, creating intimate, groove-driven experiences. As my involvement in electronic music emerged and grew, I launched a second brand under my Greek name, Dimitrios, to reflect this new energy. Now I carefully choose between both brands depending on the event's vibe.
How did the idea of Hide Doha emerge from your unique blend of expertise as an architect, marketing and events management professional and award-winning DJ? Can you share how the concept came to life?
Hide started as a joke among friends but quickly became a mission to introduce Qatar to world-class electronic music –something unprecedented here. During the World Cup month alone, we hosted 30-plus international DJs such as Rampa, &ME, Adriatique, Tale of Us, Marco Carola and Blondish to name a few. We also welcomed guest legends, including Solomun and Amr Diab.
What began as a passion project soon evolved into Doha's number one ranked nightclub, blending my diverse background in architecture, music and events into a singular vision. As both a DJ and designer, I wanted to create more than just a venue – I wanted to craft an immersive experience where cuttingedge sound, visionary artists and innovative design would come together. My architectural expertise allowed us to build Hide with precision, integrating world-class acoustics and lighting to transform the space into a sensory journey. Meanwhile, my experience as a DJ ensured that every detail – from the layout of the dance floor to the placement of the speakers – was optimised for both artists and guests. Beyond the design, Hide became a platform to connect Qatar with the global electronic music scene.
Hide Doha has hosted world-renowned artists. How have these performances shaped Hide Doha’s identity and how does being in Qatar provide a competitive advantage over other cities?
Hide Doha represents Qatar's rising status as a global entertainment hub. Our unprecedented World Cup programming proved Doha could compete with established nightlife capitals. This wasn't just about great events; it demonstrated how Qatar's world-class infrastructure, multicultural energy and visionary leadership create the perfect ecosystem for next-level experiences. What sets us apart is Qatar's unique convergence of ambition and opportunity, perfectly aligned with the nation's 2030 Tourism Strategy, to become a global leader in luxury experiences and cultural tourism. The same visionary approach that brought the World Cup and Formula 1 to Doha now powers Hide's rise –giving us access to world-class venues, seamless infrastructure and a government actively investing in entertainment as a key economic pillar.
Qatar's tourism strategy transforms our competitive edge into a global advantage. While other cities struggle with logistics, we benefit from Hamad International's connectivity (voted world's best airport), a luxury hospitality sector ranked number one in the Middle East and year-round events that attract high-value travellers. Our central eight-hour flight radius to 80% of the world's population means touring artists can perform in Doha between European and Asian legs. This ecosystem allows Hide to operate at a level others can't match.
Our cutting-edge venue design incorporates technologies from the same providers used in Olympic ceremonies, while premium sound systems meet the exacting standards of artists who typically only play Ibiza or Coachella. It's this combination – Qatar's ambitious tourism vision paired with our executional excellence – that's establishing Doha as the region's undisputed capital of elite entertainment and sports events.
Moving forward, we're expanding Qatar's musical footprint through larger festivals, innovative collaborations and sustained international bookings.
Beyond your work in Doha’s nightlife scene, you are a Country Director of Kristies Lab in Qatar, a premier luxury events management and brand marketing agency. Can you share more about the agency’s vision, its journey to becoming a regional leader and your personal role in shaping its success? Kristies Lab, founded by my elder sister Christina, has been collaborating with top-tier brands across the Middle East through her expertise in high-end marketing communications and events management. When establishing our Qatar branch, we merged her strategic brand vision with my specialisation in experiential design – creating a unique partnership that delivers both creative concepts and flawless execution. Our collaboration proved particularly valuable during Qatar's transformative moments like the World Cup, where we became the preferred partner for international brands seeking authentic local impact. The agency's strategic communications expertise ensured these projects weren't just executed well but told compelling stories that resonated globally. As a core trusted partner, Kristies Lab,
played a key role in realising my design vision for Hide, translating creative concepts into tangible experiences through meticulous event production and brand storytelling. What began as a sibling partnership has grown into a sought-after collaboration – known for creating immersive experiences that reflect Qatar's emergence as a top-notch destination for luxury and culture.
As an entrepreneur, how do you juggle your diverse roles and what advice would you offer to budding entrepreneurs hoping to emulate your success? How has Qatar’s supportive ecosystem for entrepreneurs and its commitment to innovation opened doors for businesses like yours?
From a young age, I heard entrepreneurs say, ‘If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life’ – but few mention how to turn that passion into a sustainable vision. I was fortunate to discover mine early: a fusion of music, events and architecture.
The key wasn’t just pursuing these interests separately but weaving them into a cohesive professional identity. This diversity isn’t fragmentation – it’s my competitive edge.
Whether designing Hide or orchestrating a luxury event with Kristies Lab, that multidisciplinary approach ensures precision and consistency in every project. To budding entrepreneurs, I’d say: Your unique blend of passions isn’t a distraction – it’s your signature. The challenge is to structure it. In Qatar, that ambition finds fertile ground. The nation’s commitment to innovation –from startup incubators to world-class infrastructure – empowers ventures like ours to think bigger. During the World Cup and ever since, we saw how Qatar’s ecosystem accelerates success: seamless licensing, global connectivity and a government that actively partners with entrepreneurs to elevate the country’s cultural footprint. My advice? Let Qatar’s momentum amplify your vision, but start with what sets your soul on fire. ✤

Chef Noof Al-Marri, owner and founder of Desert Rose Café, shares her fascination with spice mixing and pride at bringing Qatari cuisine to the world stage.
You’ve said that your culinary journey began early with spice blending. What is it about this side of kitchen life that you find attractive? And please tell us about your line of spices –Spices by Chef Noof.
Spices are at the heart of Qatari cuisine, carrying stories of trade, tradition and heritage. From a young age, I was fascinated by how a carefully crafted spice blend could transform a dish, evoking deep emotions and memories. This passion led me to create Spices by Chef Noof, a curated collection of blends inspired by traditional Qatari flavours. Each mix is designed to bring depth and authenticity to dishes, making it easy for both home cooks and professionals to experience the true essence of our cuisine.
Desert Rose Café sits in one of the country’s most prestigious spots at the National Museum of Qatar. How did this collaboration come about?
The National Museum of Qatar is a symbol of our country’s rich history and cultural identity, making it the perfect setting to showcase authentic Qatari flavours. The idea behind Desert Rose Café was to create a space where visitors could experience our culinary heritage in a modern and inviting way. This collaboration came naturally, as both the museum and I share a vision of preserving and celebrating Qatari traditions while presenting them to the world in a contemporary manner.
You have represented Qatar internationally, showcasing local cuisine to the world, and were also the first Qatari chef aboard Qatar Airways. How do you feel about these major achievements, and what’s next for you and your brand?
It has been an incredible honour to represent Qatar on the international stage, introducing the world to our rich culinary traditions. Sharing our flavours and culture through food has been one of the most fulfilling aspects of my journey. Being the first Qatari chef to collaborate with Qatar Airways was a proud milestone, allowing me to take our cuisine beyond borders. Moving forward, my focus remains on expanding my brand, Raseef Reqaq, and promoting sustainable and responsible gastronomy. I also have exciting new projects in the works that will further elevate and showcase Qatari cuisine.
What is your signature dish at Desert Rose, and what, in your view, makes it popular?
One of the most popular dishes at Desert Rose Café is regag with unique modern twists, along with chicken madhrooba with aromatic herbs and my signature spice blend. Madhrooba is a dish that embodies the depth of Qatari cuisine – it’s warm, comforting and packed with rich, fragrant flavours. People love it because it combines traditional taste with my personal touch, using a special blend of spices that enhances its unique character. It’s a dish that speaks to both nostalgia and innovation, making it a favourite among locals and visitors alike. ✤

Erhan Afacan, Executive Chef at Rixos Gulf Hotel Doha, talks global experiences and a fascination for molecular cuisine.
You were born and raised in Bolu, an area that is known for its culinary associations and for producing great chefs. What was that like, and what is your earliest kitchen memory?
Bolu is a treasure trove of culinary history and traditions, a place where food is not just sustenance but an integral part of life. Growing up in such a vibrant food culture deeply influenced my passion for cooking from a very young age. The region has long been recognised for producing some of Türkiye’s most renowned chefs, and its rich culinary practices have always been a source of pride. My earliest kitchen memory is watching my grandmother, whose hands seemed to dance effortlessly as she prepared authentic dishes using the freshest local ingredients. The rich aromas, meticulous techniques and the warmth of family meals ignited a lifelong fascination with food, and it was in those moments that my desire to become a chef truly took root. The essence of cooking with love, care and respect for ingredients became the foundation of my culinary philosophy.
You have made molecular cuisine a particular specialty. What does this entail and what about it attracts you?
Molecular cuisine is a thrilling intersection of science and art, where the kitchen transforms into a laboratory for creating innovative, unexpected experiences for the palate. Techniques like spherification (a process that transforms liquids into spheres resembling roe), foams, liquid nitrogen freezing, and emulsification allow me to reimagine how food interacts with the senses. What draws me to molecular cuisine is its ability to challenge the traditional boundaries of cooking, offering guests a completely new, multi-sensory dining adventure. It’s a canvas that allows me to play with texture, flavour and presentation in ways that leave a lasting impression. I find it fascinating how molecular gastronomy opens up endless possibilities – each dish becomes a creation that’s not just about taste, but about evoking emotion, excitement and surprise. It’s this element of discovery and innovation that continues to drive my passion for this culinary art form.
Having worked in various locations from the USA to Russia and Kazakhstan to Morocco, where would you say is your favourite place and how do the locations of your kitchens affect the dishes you produce?
Every place I’ve worked has offered a distinct culinary journey, shaping my skills and broadening my understanding of global cuisines. It’s hard to choose just one but, if I had to, Morocco stands out for its vibrant spices, rich history and exceptional depth of flavours. The intensity of Moroccan spices and the traditions of slow-cooked, aromatic dishes deeply inspired my culinary approach. But each location has contributed uniquely to my style – whether it’s the bold, smoky flavours of American barbecue, the delicate, refined techniques of European cuisine, or the fragrant, layered spices of the Middle East and North Africa. What excites me most about working in diverse regions is how the local culture and ingredients continuously challenge me to innovate. I strive to blend regional influences with my personal culinary vision, creating dishes that speak both to the heritage of the location and my own global experiences.
What is your signature dish at Rixos Gulf Hotel Doha, and what makes it popular?
One of my signature dishes at Rixos Gulf Hotel Doha is the lamb chops at Akte Pier 51. This dish has become a guest favourite because it seamlessly blends tradition with modern techniques, offering a truly exceptional dining experience. The lamb is tenderised, resulting in a melt-in-your-mouth texture that is incredibly rich and juicy. The blend of Middle Eastern spices – earthy, aromatic and bold – elevates the dish, infusing it with deep, captivating flavours. It captures the essence of traditional flavours while showcasing the precision of contemporary culinary techniques. Guests are drawn to this dish because it’s not just a meal – it’s an experience. It’s a reflection of my dedication to using high-quality ingredients, embracing the heritage of regional cooking and elevating it through innovation. ✤
Banyan Tree Doha: a place where luxury and nature blend seamlessly. The newly expanded lobby feels grand and inviting, with towering trees adding a serene, almost magical touch, setting the perfect welcoming tone for our dining experience in signature restaurant, Saffron.
Stepping inside felt like entering a world where tradition and artistry blended seamlessly. As the name suggests, the restaurant was bathed in warm golden-orange hues, casting a rich, inviting glow that echoed the deep, luxurious tones of the prized spice. Striking golden installations, textured like a dragon’s gleaming scales, commanded attention, adding regal grandeur to the space. Exquisitely arranged place settings hinted at the refinement to come and, from our seat by the window, the breathtaking view only elevated the anticipation. It was the perfect introduction to a menu that reimagined the flavours of Thailand. From the moment we sat down, it was clear that dining at Saffron was more than just a meal, it was an experience! The attention to detail began immediately, with an interactive menu allowing us to explore each dish ahead of ordering. More thoughtful touches followed, such as a handwashing ritual with scented water and soft towels. This felt like a gentle prelude to the feast ahead. Then came the first taste – homemade rice crackers, served with three exquisite dipping sauces. Satisfying and moreish, we savoured every last crumb! Even before our meal arrived, it was clear that each element was designed to engage the senses and immerse us in Thai culinary artistry. Before our selections arrived, we had the pleasure of meeting Head Chef Porntip Eumanan, whose passion for Thai cuisine was evident in every word she spoke. With 23 years at Saffron’s branches worldwide – four of them spent in Doha – she brought
a deep understanding of the menu, its heritage, and the artistry behind each dish. Chef Porntip warmly shared insights into the carefully sourced ingredients, describing in detail the intricate pastes and sauces that are all handcrafted. Her expertise was undeniable, but it was her genuine love for the craft that made our conversation memorable.
The Khong Wang Ruam arrived as a beautifully arranged sharing platter, showcasing a generous selection of Thai appetisers. A satisfying crunch came from the crisp, rice noodle-wrapped prawn, revealing sweet, tender seafood within. Smoky and succulent, the grilled chicken satay was perfectly complemented by a rich peanut sauce. The sea bass rice paper noodle roll offered a soft, silky texture, while the pomelo prawn salad provided a refreshing balance of citrus and sweetness. Each element on the platter worked in harmony to deliver a memorable start to the meal. Two salads followed, each capturing the bold and playful essence of Thai cuisine. The Som Tum Puu Nim, a papaya salad with soft shell crab, packed a punch, its tangy, crisp papaya perfectly balancing the delicate, crispy crab. Subtle heat lingered, adding depth to the dish. The Yum Ped Nahm Tok, a duck salad, invited you to roll tender duck in the fresh, vibrant leaves, making each bite a flavour sensation. Rich and succulent, the duck complemented the herbs and tangy dressing, creating both a visual and gastronomic delight.
Elegantly presented on a candle warmer, the Tom Yum Goong Soup arrived, its heat carefully maintained. This thoughtful touch allowed the rich flavours to stay intense, both in taste and temperature. The broth offered a perfect balance of tangy, spicy and savoury, with tender prawns and a medley of vegetables within. Before the mains, a refreshing raspberry sorbet, served in an ice glass, acted as the ideal palate cleanser. Delicately balanced in tartness, it provided a refreshing reset ahead of the next course. The main courses arrived, each showcasing the depth and complexity of Thai flavours. Slow-cooked for six hours, the Massaman Nua curry beef was melt-in-the-mouth tender, with a creamy sauce enriched by chestnuts and cashews offering comforting richness. Accompanying pickled vegetables provided a sharp contrast, balancing the dish beautifully. A vibrant classic, the Pad Thai Goong Sod offered a harmonious blend of sweet, savoury and tangy nuances. Meanwhile, the Goong Phad Prik Guea featured deep-fried garlic tiger prawns, crispy and full of flavour, their delicate sweetness elevated by fragrant garlic. Served with a choice of four rice options and unlimited refills, the mains ensured we could savour every dish to its fullest. The final two dishes provided the perfect conclusion to an unforgettable meal. Khao Niew Mamuang and I Tim Kati (mango sticky rice), a flawless rendition of the classic dessert, featured sweet, fragrant mango paired with creamy, tender sticky rice. Every last bite was devoured. Alongside this, we were treated to Tub Tim Krob Gup and I Tim Kati—sweet water chestnuts in syrup and coconut milk, served inside a coconut. Refreshing and visually stunning, the dish was made even more dramatic with the addition of dry ice, adding flair and marking a truly memorable finish to the experience. Saffron offered a fine-dining journey that honoured Thailand’s culinary heritage. The dishes, prepared with techniques passed down through generations, showcased indigenous ingredients in
a way that brought the best of Thai cuisine to the table. True to its roots, the restaurant embraced classic flavours while elevating them to new heights, making it a dining experience both timeless and innovative – it’s a safe bet we’ll be back again soon! ✤
SD took a trip to O’Glacee to experience Mexican flavours in a gorgeous outdoor setting.
You'd think dining in the heart of Msheireb would be a noisy affair – but not at O'Glacée. This rooftop venue at Alwadi Hotel Doha – MGallery
Collection is the perfect escape from the bustle below. Add in a picturesque poolside and some sweeping city views, and you have yourself a great al fresco dining ambience.
The setup is simple – comfortable dining tables and chairs spread across a massive terrace overlooking the Fanar. It's great for a little walk around to digest in between your courses and we might just try that.
It's rather windy today and since this is a poolside terrace, we're unable to escape it. But the staff ensure we are comfortable and immediately move a heater right next to our table. The warmth kicks in shortly and we're now ready to explore the menu.
The Mexican offerings look promising and we're instantly pleased with the selection. It's a cold night, but who are we to refuse some ceviche and guacamole.
The creamy guacamole comes with a side of crispy tortilla chips – the perfect way to start. We try two types of ceviche. The Aguachile de Camaron is a refreshing, citrusy appetiser with a very generous amount of shrimp and avocado. The avocado makes the portion very hearty and the jalapeños and aguachile sauce add a nice kick of spice and tanginess. The Ceviche de Puplo is a more upbeat dish with the highlight being the soft octopus with onions to add some crunch.
The Taco Loco section on the menu is irresistible with some great looking options. We pick the first one – Flautas de Res –
featuring a hard-shell tortilla rolled up and filled with beef brisket and guacamole. The tomato salsa and sour cream are the ideal accompaniments for a supremely satisfying bite.
We try one more appetiser before moving to mains. One can never have too much shrimp so the Camarones Empanizados is a natural choice. These deep-fried shrimp cutlets are really comforting and crispy. Probably our favourite from all the choices and fried very well sans any grease. The dish comes with a spicy sriracha sauce making it difficult to stop popping these.
For the mains, there is a sandwich selection and some heavier options such as fajitas, burritos and Ribeye. As much as we'd like to have one of each – they really are tempting – we've gone big on appetisers (and avocado) so we decide to keep it simple with a sandwich. A well-made decision – bearing in mind we'll need to save space for dessert.
The Pepito Sandwich is in keeping with tonight's avocado theme. So yes, our choice of mains includes avocado, too. This is a hearty sandwich with beef and Cheddar cheese nicely placed in between panini bread. With a great mix of flavours and textures, it's rather filling and not to be underestimated, but the quality of the fillings means we keep going back for more until our plates are cleaned.
And now for the sweet finale. We go for the Tarta De Queso Con Maracuya – a delightful passion fruit cheesecake that does not disappoint. The buttery and crunchy biscuity base provides a satisfying contrast to the rich, velvety cheesecake. The passion fruit topping adds a refreshing, sweet and tangy touch to all the great textures. This is an irresistible treat and we want more, but
there simply is not space for another morsel. The overall experience at O'Glacée is unforgettable. From decadent dishes to striking views, we've truly enjoyed this evening out on the terrace. The pool makes us crave summer a little, but we're not complaining. Doha's weather is splendid at the moment. This is an ideal spot for anyone looking to have a fun evening out with friends or even an intimate dining experience.✤

Meandering into the familiarity of the Spice Market, we couldn’t wait to tuck into cuisine that we knew would not only be a feast for the eyes, but a delectable and satiating meal that was sure to linger in the memory - long after it was devoured. Since opening its doors, this hot spot has hosted an array of fantastic chefs who have all brought something new to the menu of Southeast-Asian street food cuisine, served in a dimly-lit and effortlessly-chic dining room that hosts everything from a celebratory gathering with friends to small business lunches amongst colleagues.
Just over four months into his tenure in the Spice Market kitchen, we were warmly welcomed by Aphithak Withihit, our chef for the evening. Hospitable and passionate, he took the time to personally introduce each dish. As true food lovers, we happily let him take the reins, trusting his expert recommendations. And after two hours of endless feasting, it is safe to say: he did not disappoint.
With soft Oriental music serenading us and amber lighting casting a warm glow over the wooden walls, we settled by the window overlooking the bustle of West Bay. After refreshing our hands with warm towels and with the aromas of lemongrass and ginger making our empty stomachs gurgle, we were ready to dive straight in.
To wet our palates, we sipped on the Himalayan mocktail – a sweet yet tangy blend of passion fruit purée and homemade hibiscus syrup, balanced by the sharp bite of ginger ale. This quickly proved to be a favourite as I ordered another midway through the evening – thanks to the recommendation of our wonderful waiter, Promise.
After a quick sip and some light conversation, we were more than ready to have a taste of the ‘small bites,’ which – despite the name – were anything but. Starting with the green papaya salad, its crisp bean sprouts and papaya delivered a satisfying crunch, though my taste buds were truly awoken with the fiery kick that accompanied each bite, hitting the back of the throat. Did somebody say hot? The crispy chicken gyozas were wellbalanced: their golden shells giving way to a rich, savoury filling, perfectly bound with a soy garlic dip. Needless to say, these were polished off the plate in no time. Another standout on the table was the classic tom yum soup—piping hot and brimming with tender fish, succulent prawns and plump mussels, all swimming in a vibrant, zesty tomato-based broth. Tom yum indeed! The highlight of the appetisers was the black shrimp. Paired with delicate cubes of dehydrated pineapple, we followed the chef’s recommendation to eat them in a single bite, allowing the smoky, peppery depth of the shrimp to meld with the concentrated sweetness of the pineapple – an explosion of flavour that was vibrant yet irresistibly balanced with notes of garlic, ginger and lime. As one often does after savouring something truly delicious, I found myself reminiscing about it throughout the night.
Knowing that I would need room for dessert (of course), I settled for just two: the roasted hammour nestled above a Malaysian chilli and Thai basil sauce, and the famous glazed short ribs. As expected, the hammour was succulent and flaky, rich and
buttery all at once, with the chilli and basil providing the perfect counterbalance to the fish's density. But the true star of this course was the juicy, sticky ribs, accompanied by a velvety celeriac purée. Chef Aphithak took a moment to share the preparation process with us. The ribs are marinated for at least 24 hours, infused with a delightful array of flavours, including pear and orange zest. Finally, they are slow-cooked at 160 degrees until the meat is tender and falling off the bone. Melting in my mouth, each bite offered a beautiful fusion of fruity sweetness and savoury richness.
The theme of contrasting flavours – sweet with salty, spicy with zesty – remained a hallmark of the Spice Market menu, beautifully extending into the desserts. The Matcha Cheesecake, Its velvety texture and umami, nutty flavour created a rich, earthy density that was beautifully balanced by the yuzu sorbet. The sharp, citrusy tang of the sorbet refreshingly cleansed the palate, instantly awakening the taste buds. I found myself both intrigued and delighted by the contrast of flavours, eagerly reaching for another bite, until, all too soon, it was gone. Complementing this was the ever-reliable coconut pandan cake – an enduring favourite. Served with pineapple jewels and a luscious caramel sauce, it was deliciously delectable.
Spice Market stands the test of time, offering the pinnacle of Southeast-Asian cuisine that tastes just as exceptional now as it did when it first opened. Whether you're there for small bites, a sushi extravaganza or a decadent three-course meal, it never fails to impress and it’s guaranteed that you will be back - time and time again. ✤

It’s health-focused, serving a balanced diet based on fresh produce, while maintaining a positive relationship with portion size. I’m concerned it’ll satisfy my need for responsible eating, but not my appetite. Well, I needn’t have worried! Entering the restaurant, it’s apparent the space is well-designed. Clean in style, tall windows allow natural light to flood the dining area where unfussy tables meet views of the pool deck and, beyond that, the sea. It’s a beautiful day, so we’re led to the astounding outdoor dining area: a sunken terrace carved into the resort’s huge saltwater swimming lagoon.
Al Sidr’s menu is a dream for healthy eaters who abhor bland food. Head Chef Eaky, bright and passionate, explains the culinary influences from its sister hotel in Thailand and the Arabic touches from ingredients like turmeric and honey. He outlines his method of mindful plating and how the character of each dish lies in its balance. Spicy, sweet or sour, each dish represents harmony and cooperation.
Chef Eaky brings his favourite items to start. First up, Kimchi Dumplings. Tender, translucent pouches of softly spiced kimchi
and spinach, garnished with sweet edamame and poached asparagus. They’re gone in seconds. Hot on their heels come Japanese Tuna Quinoa Balls. Firm in texture, the dish’s powerful sesame flavour is offset by a delicate touch of celery. We choose a healthy prawn broth (think ‘mindful Tom Yum Goong’) over the Healing Miso Broth and the Green Soup, due to its heady kefir lime, fresh coriander and large, juicy peeled crustacean. For our main course, Chef Eaky and his fabulous team prepare 5 Spices Beef, a tart pomelo salad and some sumptuous curried noodles. The beef consists of two slices of perfectly cooked tenderloin, with a generous scattering of crunchy garlic crisps over fragrant sautéed spinach. Complemented by a sweet, tangy sauce, the meat and sides are so stunningly presented that it feels like I’m eating art. The pomelo salad with tomato and desiccated coconut is cool and fresh, the side of nutty wild rice is scrumptious and the fermented vegetables accompanying our noodles are not only beneficial for gut health, but absolutely delicious. I realise the culinary team at Al Sidr are scientists at heart. They love to experiment, yet remain consistent in quality and presentation. Each item is precisely produced, and every dish presented with its calorific value, protein and fat content. Room for dessert? Well, the beef is just 209 kcal, 19g
carbohydrates, 20g protein and 6g of fat, so — yes please. My guest drools over Coconut and Charcoal Ice Cream with a black sesame cracker, while I choose Citrus Garden. Both are excellent. Mine is so good it needs guarding: a divine combination of mandarin, Valencia orange and kumquat, arranged over a biscuit base soaked in the juices. Enjoyed with a spoonful of mint sorbet, it’s the perfect finale.
Al Sidr isn’t a restaurant. It’s a masterclass in how to make healthy food both exciting and fulfilling. The dishes are creative, the flavours vibrant and the whole experience is a retreat for your body and soul. By the time we finish, the tide has long gone out, exposing a wide stretch of rugged beach and the sun is setting. It’s incredibly pretty, and wonderfully calm. Can’t I just stay here for the whole week? ✤

AMS enjoyed a journey to relaxation on a visit to Saray Spa.
As I walked into the serene Saray Spa at the Marriott Marquis City Centre Doha Hotel, I was immediately enveloped in its tranquil ambience. The elegant design, combining modern sophistication with soothing natural elements, created a welcoming atmosphere. Earthy tones and subtle greenery added vitality to the space, inviting a sense of calm and peace. After a long day at the office, I was very much looking forward to some pampering and the warm welcome from smiling staff members only added to my anticipation.
Amidst this refined setting, I was warmly greeted by Mia, my therapist for the day. Her friendly demeanour and professionalism immediately put me at ease knowing I was in capable hands. She conducted a thorough consultation to understand my preferences and health background, ensuring my treatments would be tailored to my needs. Her attention to detail promised an unforgettable journey of relaxation.
My experience began with the Saray Hammam Bathing Ritual, a timeless tradition echoing ancient Arabia. Reclining on a heated marble slab in the warm exfoliation chamber, I was introduced to a classical practice that combined
cleansing, detoxification and relaxation. Mia began with a light massage using olive oil and laurel soap, which softened my skin and prepared it for the next steps.
This was followed by a detoxifying steam session that enveloped me in soothing warmth, opening my pores and allowing me to leave the worries and stresses of the day behind. The highlight of the ritual was a skin-stimulating exfoliation session using traditional scrubbing techniques that removed the dead cells and left my skin feeling silky smooth and renewed. To complete the experience, Mia used traditional aromatherapy oils during a gentle massage, which added profound relaxation and serenity to the treatment.
The rich scents of olive oil and herbal essences filled the air throughout the ritual, creating an immersive sensory experience that transported me to another world.
Following the Hammam ritual, I indulged in an Aromatherapy Massage, designed to rebalance my body and awaken my senses. Mia began by applying aromatherapy oils that stimulated circulation while reducing swelling and easing muscle tension. Her skilled hands worked expertly on areas of stress using rhythmic strokes that melted away tightness. Just what I needed.
The treatment culminated in a soothing head massage that reawakened my senses while leaving me deeply
relaxed. The combination of calming oils and Mia’s expert techniques created an unparalleled sense of tranquillity. Throughout the session, Mia demonstrated exceptional attention to detail, consistently checking in with me to ensure that her pressure was tailored to my needs and the room's ambience and temperature were perfectly balanced for ultimate relaxation.
After my treatments, I spent time unwinding in the spa’s relaxation area – a serene haven designed for quiet reflection. I was served ginger tea accompanied by dates and cashew nuts, which added an indulgent touch to my experience. The warm tea paired perfectly with the natural sweetness of dates and crunchiness of cashews, allowing me to savour each moment as I soaked in the peaceful surroundings. The changing area was equipped with plush robes, slippers and premium amenities for guests’ comfort adding to the feeling of being thoroughly spoilt. Quiet relaxation zones provided serene spaces to unwind before or after treatments, while refreshments such as herbal teas and fresh juices added an extra touch of indulgence.
Saray Spa at Marriott Marquis City Centre Doha is an oasis of tranquillity where mind, body and spirit harmonise effortlessly. The Saray Hammam Bathing Ritual combined with the Aromatherapy Massage, paired with Mia’s expertise in both therapies, made this experience truly extraordinary. I left feeling refreshed, renewed and ready to face another day at the office with restored energy. ✤
We were lucky enough to visit Umana Bali, LXR Hotels & Resorts. an exclusive spot in Ungasan at the southernmost tip of the island and, approaching by air, we were mesmerised by the location. As tropical islands go, this enchanting spot ticks all the boxes required to be called a true paradise. After touching down, we breezed through customs and were welcomed by a full limo service that whisked us toward our destination.
A short drive through winding roads lined with abundant vegetation, and we found ourselves at the grand lobby of Umana Bali, LXR Hotels & Resorts.
In this high-ceilinged open area, the green surroundings, artistry and architecture merge to create a gallery-like space that seamlessly blends the island’s past with its present. We were captivated by the striking metal and hand-blown chandelier, along with other details showcasing Bali’s rich cultural heritage.
We barely had the chance to greet all the welcoming faces before our check in was complete and we were being escorted to our villa by Richard, our dedicated curator. Umana Bali, LXR Hotels & Resorts boasts some of this world-famous destination’s most stunning ocean views and 72 luxuriously curated villas. The resort's layout features cascading terraces atop limestone cliffs, reminiscent of uma, or ancient rice paddy fields, from which it gets its name.
The lavish retreat also houses a grand ballroom, a large meeting room, a beautiful chapel overlooking the Indian Ocean, an infinity pool and a kids’ club. A holistic spa contains sanctuary rooms, a relaxation area, an indoor yoga pavilion, a sauna, a steam room, hot and cold plunge pools and an outdoor spa pool. Additionally, a fitness centre is open 24 hours a day for guests.
Our one-bedroom Ocean Pool Villa was 403sq/m of pure luxury. Moving through our spacious living area, we were met by an open-air paradise adorned with stunning views and a Balinese bale – a straw roofed structure. Every villa in the resort has its own infinity pool, and we took full advantage of our 10-metre version on many occasions. We loved the natural light illuminating the marble bathroom, featuring a rainfall shower and deep tub. There was also a second shower located outside.
The resort boasts a diverse range of first-class, in-house restaurants and bars. The hotel sources 80% of its produce from local farms and its hydroponic herb and vegetable garden. This means the freshest and most appetising dining experiences imaginable.
On our first evening, we experienced The Commune. Although the restaurant offers an eclectic mix of international, Asian
and local cuisine, we opted for the Balinese dishes, sampling many on our first night. We were hugely grateful that we did. We were fortunate enough to revisit this venue for breakfast, enjoying a semi-buffet style meal consisting of fresh fruits, juices, yoghurts, granola and pastry options. There was an egg station and additional hot selections for those who wanted a more substantial early meal. As guests, we could also order anything we liked from the à la carte menu.
Oliverra, is a high-end restaurant perched on a cliff with stunning Instagrammable terrace views of the ocean. This idyllic venue is where we dined during a mesmerising sunset on the second night of our stay.
Specialising in Mediterranean cuisine, Oliverra proved to be a real gem. The grilled scallops and octopus were the standout dishes for the evening, as was the perfectly cooked steak – one of the best we’ve tasted.
As the resort is positioned on a steep cliff, we had the privilege of being driven by car to the famous Melasti Beach below. Within minutes of leaving the hotel, we had our toes in the white sand, feeling the warm ocean lapping against our ankles.
Offering Japanese and Peruvian cuisine, Uma Beach House sources its ingredients from the local fisheries of Sanur and farms around the Ungasan and Kintamani areas. We were once again spoilt by what was placed in front of us. A truly delectable dining experience.
One of the activities we enjoyed was an organised village walk which took us past paddy fields and through the local town showcasing traditional Balinese houses and the many temples scattered around the area. We passed schools with little kids dressed in adorable pink uniforms who were quick to greet us with big smiles. Lucky enough to eat a traditional breakfast in one of the houses we encountered, we sampled a couple of firsts. The meal started with Klepon, a local sweet made with rice dough and what we can only describe as coconut pockets filled with sugarcane syrup and coffee. Next was a plate of steamed rice and Chicken Lilit, which is like a chicken kebab. A second chicken dish mixed with sambal matah meant a chilli flavour that left a great taste in the mouth. Overall, this was a novel and interesting experience for us.
Umana Bali, LXR Hotels & Resorts offers a range of curated experiences for guests and the one activity we will forever cherish, as dedicated foodies, was a cooking class where we excitedly learned to make the foods we had eaten on our village walk.
We took great pleasure in discovering the authentic recipe for Chicken Lilit, a special dish made for celebrations. Next, we were shown how to combine the chilis, shallots, lemon grass and several other ingredients to create sambal matah. Once mixed, this delicious condiment is cooked as hot coconut oil is poured over it. We fell in love with it and even took some local chillis to try it at home. There’s also a great coffee tasting experience.
After the village walk, the timing was perfect to indulged in a relaxing spa treatment and, of course, we couldn’t come to Bali without enjoying a Balinese massage. As we stepped into the beautifully designed spa, we were warmly welcomed. After filling out a brief form regarding our general health, preferred massage pressure and focus spots, we were led to the treatment area. Our experience began with a soothing foot wash, setting the stage for the ultimate relaxation. What followed was 60 minutes of pure bliss – a perfectly executed Balinese massage with aromatic oil that not only eased our muscles but also rejuvenated our souls.
Amongst the other memorable activities we enjoyed during our stay was the delightful floating breakfast. Slipping into our private pool on a warm and sunny morning, we once again ordered the Indonesian option as we had by now fallen in love with the local cuisine. This was a memorable way to appreciate our final meal at the resort before taking our leave of this magical island which has carved a place in our hearts. ✤

132 rooms, 157 suspects, one dead body and an eccentric detective trying to solve a murder at the White House during a state dinner. The Agatha Christie-style whodunit was a hit with critics with ratings from 7.8 to 8.3 on a scale of 1-10.
Creator: Paul William Davies
Directors: Jaafar Mahmood, Liza Johnson
Cast: Uzo Aduba, Giancarlo Espisto, Molly Griggs, Susan Kelechi Watson, Jason Lee and Kylie Minogue
The eight-episode TV show is amusing, enigmatic and enjoyable all round, with twists and turns, all taking place in the upstairs, downstairs and backstairs of the White House, while one wildly eccentric detective, Cordelia Cupp, partners with sceptical special FBI Agent Edwin Park, to untangle an intriguing murder mystery, during a disastrous state dinner.
American actress Uzu Aduba, known for her portrayal of Crazy Eyes in Orange Is the New Black, turns in a joyous performance as the distinctly odd but brilliant detective tasked with working her way through a captive audience of suspects, many of whom have something to hide.
The victim is Giancarlo Esposito, who plays chief usher A.B Wynters a man at the heart of the White House having worked there for 20 years. He is a meticulous human being who cares about the house and everyone in it. But investigations reveal there is no shortage of people who could, potentially, benefit from his death. Despite being overrun with characters, details, timelines and story, the comedic tone of this murder mystery imparts a joyful tone making it a worthwhile bingeable experience. And, if you need more convincing, don’t forget the Kylie factor.
Adolescence employs a unique one-shot filming technique to create a visceral and immersive experience. “
Need to Know:
A tense and gripping four-part limited series, Adolescence employs a unique one-shot filming technique to create a visceral and immersive experience. The story explores the devastating consequences when a 13-year-old is accused of murder, examining the impact on his family, the investigating detectives and a clinical psychologist. Expect strong performances and a compelling, albeit occasionally uneven, narrative.
Creators: Jack Thorne, Stephen Graham
Director: Philip Barantini
Cast: Stephen Graham, Owen Cooper, Ashley Walters, Erin Doherty, Faye MarsayBelcher III and Angela Basset.
Adolescence masterfully captures the emotional turmoil of a family facing an unthinkable tragedy. The series shines in its unflinching portrayal of grief, suspicion and the desperate search for truth. The continuous-shot filming style creates a sense of immediacy, drawing the viewer into the unfolding events. The main character is realistically portrayed, adding depth and complexity to the narrative.
While the relentless tension of the one-shot format occasionally leads to a slightly rushed pacing, the overall impact is powerful. The exploration of male rage and societal pressures influencing young people is insightful, though some plot points, particularly those surrounding the investigation, may feel somewhat predictable. Despite these minor shortcomings, Adolescence offers a rewarding viewing experience. Its unflinching examination of a family's worst nightmare resonates powerfully, prompting reflection on the complexities of justice and the pressures faced by teenagers today. The series is elevated by strong performances and a commitment to realistic storytelling. Available for binge-watching now, it's a compelling watch before the lingering questions are fully answered.
By Rose Betts
There Is No Ship is London-born singer Rose Betts’ second album, which she announced four months prior to its release. It fluctuates between slower folk ballads and upbeat tracks, adopting themes of yearning, urgency and sadness in the singer’s tone. The album includes four pre-released tracks: Take This Body Home, Come Away , Doodles and Running . The latter three songs fall into the ‘upbeat’ category while the former is slower and less energetic.
Six , begins the album with a memorable chorus – a bold move which Betts executes perfectly, choosing to close it the same way. The singer reminisces about a doomed relationship in both Save me a Seat and Alderidge Creek , the latter hinting at tragedy with the lyrics “the world lost my lover and me”. I Am an Island and My Funeral Song are both melancholy, but while the former is dream-like and yearning, the latter is regretful and morbidly curious. Rose closes the album with title track There Is No Ship , emphasising freedom in being “bound to these shores” in contrast to former themes of feeling trapped. Overall, Rose Betts has created a cohesive album which evokes strong emotions in the listener, from sadness to passion, making for an intriguing listen.
By Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga’s new album Mayhem has been highly anticipated since lead single Disease was released on October 25 last year. The song opens the album with a confident note, leading into Abracadabra which is similarly composed with a dance worthy beat.
Perfect Celebrity stands out as a vibrant pop song, completed with Gaga’s distinct sound and a thrumming rhythm in the background as the singer laments public scrutiny. The song is succeeded by Vanish Into You which takes a romantic turn before the album moves into Killah, a fast and funky tune featuring French DJ, Gesaffelstein.
The ninth and 10th tracks, How Bad Do U Want Me and Don’t Call Tonight, have a more pop-rock based sound with faint electronic instrumentals in the background, giving listeners a chance to appreciate the lyrics layered on catchy melodies – particularly How Bad Do U Want Me, which went viral for its unique sound.
Blade of Grass slows the album to a ballad before leading into Die With A Smile. Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars released the last track on August 15, 2024. Ending the album with this song gives the listener a sense of familiarity as the haze of the album melts into enjoyment for the whole project.

You’ll often hear dog owners scoff at people who say “it’s just a dog”. And, yes, we’re firmly in that camp, in case you hadn’t already guessed. But there have been stories around the world this month that have us even more convinced about the empathy of animals – if such proof were, in fact, needed. Just last week, police in South Carolina, USA, were called to help round up an escaped kangaroo. The animal’s owner told local news stations that she had to venture out in her pink pyjamas in pursuit of her adventurous pet – a domestic roo is a new one on us – and investigations
revealed the intrepid marsupial had been released by none other than a goat pal, who unlatched the gate. Meanwhile, in Wisconsin, zoo officials said attempts to recapture a pair of escaped otters were foiled when a racoon meddled with traps just before one of the fugitives was about to enter. And, in the UK, a donkey named Ned proved animals are certainly open to a bit of bribery. The escape artist, who local police say is known for ‘hoofing it’, was causing traffic chaos after making a break from his field. He was eventually bribed to head back home with the strategic use of tasty mints, apparently his favourite treat. We should never underestimate our fourlegged friends.
Have you heard of the Darwin Awards? They’re tongue in cheek accolades passed out for people who’ve met their demise in somewhat dumb and, often, predictable circumstances. The official description is: “The Darwin Awards honour those who tip chlorine into our gene pool, by accidentally removing their own DNA from it during the spectacular climax of a 'great idea' gone veddy, veddy wrong.”
As avid newshounds, we like to keep abreast of such foolishness but we never expected to discover a surefire winner in the wild, so to speak.
That was until we read the sad tale of two
chaps in Oregon who went missing after going in search of the mythical Sasquatch. The pair, aged 37 and 59, set off on their quest in Washington State – not known for its clement winter weather – shortly before Christmas last year. A search was launched when they failed to return home and their bodies were discovered in a national forest three days later.
Here's a hint, the Sasquatch didn’t do it. According to the local sheriff’s office, cause of death appeared to be ‘exposure, based on weather conditions and ill-preparedness’. Definitely Darwinian.
A little nugget caught our attention this week. The tale of two men in the UK convicted of stealing a toilet. So far, a bit odd but pretty mundane. However, the fully functional prized potty in question happens to be an art installation made of 18-carat gold and the pair used sledgehammers and crowbars to remove it from Oxfordshire’s historic Blenheim Palace, where it was on display back in 2019. The luxury latrine, insured for USD6 million, was the work of controversial artist Maurizio Cattelan and had previously been shown at New York’s
Guggenheim Museum. Michael Jones and Fred Doe were convicted of various charges in connection with the theft. Another man, James Sheen, had previously admitted his organisational role in the heist. Prosecutors believe the magnificent edifice was broken down and sold in parts but not before Jones had made use of the pricey porcelain – an experience he described as ‘splendid’.
The crooks are awaiting sentencing. The name of the golden toilet? America. You couldn’t make this up!
