Bahrain’s Art Centre is hosting an international exhibition showcasing art as a platform for climate awareness.
A major international art project, MAMA – Mother Nature, has made its way to Bahrain, featuring 106 artworks by 55 artists from 29 countries. The exhibition, which debuted at the Heydar Aliyev Center in Baku during the 29th UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) in November last year, promotes environmental awareness through art.
The project is organised by the RAK Art Foundation and the Heydar Aliyev Center, in collaboration with the International Dialogue for Environmental Action (IDEA) and Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities. Featured artists include Shaikh Rashid Al Khalifa and Leyla Aliyeva, whose works address today's global environmental challenges. The exhibition showcases three paintings by Shaikh Rashid from the Crossing the Nile series. These works symbolise life and death through the banks of the river Nile, reflecting the sun's daily journey. They explore nature, mythology and spirituality, commenting on humanity’s relationship with the environment.
Another highlight is Leyla Aliyeva’s multimedia installation, The Magic Grail of Life, which, with 45 paintings, examines water's transformative nature – its ability to nurture or destroy and its essential role in sustaining life.
"Art transcends boundaries and sparks vital conversations on global issues like climate change,” said Shaikh Rashid
bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, Founder of the RAK Art Foundation. “Hosting MAMA in Bahrain supports our goal of fostering cultural exchange and dialogue on sustainability. Following last year’s successful Bahraini exhibition at QGallery in Baku, we are excited to continue our commitment to international artistic collaboration."
He emphasised the project’s importance in boosting Bahrain’s cultural standing and added: "Bringing international events like MAMA to Bahrain enriches our artistic scene, encourages global dialogue and motivates our community to act on sustainability."
Highlighting the project’s relevance, Curator Emin Mammadov said: "The need for sustainable solutions is urgent. As we confront climate change, art can inspire awareness and action. This art project calls to protect our planet and its natural resources for future generations."
The MAMA Mother Nature Art Project is open to the public and runs until March 25 at the Art Centre, daily from 9am to 8pm. ✤

The Holy Month, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, is here and, for Muslims, comes a time of daylight fasting, prayer and reflection, in atonement for previous transgressions. But, whether you’re observant or not, there’s no doubt that, in our part of the world, Ramadan is a special time. For expats and non-Muslims, it offers an opportunity to learn more about the ways of our hosts, consider getting involved in charity work or giving and a time for quiet contemplation and, perhaps, to join in the fasting, even if only for a limited period.
To help you make the most of the Holy Month, we’ve put together ideas for a Ramadan Planner – a series of important activities and tips – aimed at helping you stay on track during the coming weeks.
MAKING A RAMADAN PLANNER
Make yourself aware of the proper times for fasting. For Muslims, the necessity of this step is obvious. Non-Muslims
should remember that there should be no eating, drinking or smoking in public during the fasting period and knowing sunrise and sunset times will avoid causing offence. Set goals and times to achieve them. Ask yourself what you would like to achieve during Ramadan. Do you want to learn more about Islam by attending lectures or classes or perhaps study Arabic? Set aside time in your planner for these activities and track your achievements.
Allocate times for prayer or just general quiet reflection. Knowing this time is set aside will enable you to better cope with the demands of Ramadan’s shorter working days and the, sometimes hectic, evening schedule of Iftars, Suhours and Ghabgas.
Consider your foods and exercise. Though it’s only human to be hungry after a day of abstinence, it’s important to be mindful of what you are actually eating during the evening hours. Making time for physical activity is just as important, however, making adjustments to your routine and opting

for lighter exercise regime may be more suitable during fasting. Adding meal prep and alternative exercise timings to your Ramadan planner will make it easier to manage your day and keep you on track. Check out more of our Ramadan wellness tips later in this feature.
Adopt a charitable attitude. While being mindful of and helping others is important throughout the year, for Muslims, in Ramadan the emphasis on charitable acts during the Holy Month is very important and it’s something others often find attractive. If you decide this special month is your catalyst to do some good, there are plenty of ways to give back to society. From clearing your cupboards and passing on unwanted clothing and other goods to donating a Ramadan Box at your local supermarket or making a toy collection for underprivileged youngsters at your kids’ schools, there are multiple ways to take part. Various schools and organisation arrange Ramadan drives and campaigns to help those in need, while many notable charities accept both financial and non-financial donations online. You can find some ideas further on in this feature to help you get started.
Once you’ve established what you want to include in your Ramadan Planner, make sure to write it down. Having your aims and goals clearly visible in black and white makes you accountable and can be encouraging. It may also be a good idea to share your planner with family or close friends; you can coordinate activities, such as exercise or charitable
giving, and it will keep you accountable. But, also, be prepared to adjust your schedule if necessary. As the old saying goes, life can get in the way of the best laid plans. Ramadan is also a time for self-forgiveness, so don’t beat yourself up if you don’t achieve everything on your list. Instead treat it as a great start for the year ahead and perhaps extend the planner beyond the Holy Month to make your life improvements permanent. ✤

Fasting during Ramadan is a spiritual practice but it can also affect energy levels, hydration and overall well-being. However, with a few mindful adjustments, it’s possible to keep your health in check throughout the month. Here are our top tips to keep you fighting fit this Ramadan.
With the Holy Month upon us, most people’s routines turn upside down. While the focus is on spirituality, it’s equally important to find a way to balance fasting, prayer and daily responsibilities. Follow this Ramadan wellness guide for healthy fasting.
1. A Balanced Suhour
Suhour is the foundation of your fasting day, so make sure you choose slow-digesting foods like oats, whole grains, beans and protein sources, such as eggs or yoghurt. These will help to sustain your energy levels and keep you feeling full for longer. Avoid salty or fried dishes, as these can lead to dehydration later in the day.
2. Stay Hydrated
It’s important to drink plenty of fluids between Iftar and Suhour
to help rehydrate after fasting. Aim for at least eight glasses of water and try to include hydrating foods like cucumbers, watermelon and soups. Avoid excessive caffeine or soft drinks and opt for good old-fashioned H2O instead.
3. Breaking Your Fast
When it’s time for Iftar, instead of rushing into a heavy meal, give your body time to adjust by eating in stages. Start slow and reintroduce food into your system gently with dates and water, followed by a well-balanced meal that includes protein, complex carbohydrates, fibre and healthy fats.
4. Portion Control
Fasting often increases cravings, tempting you to overeat at Iftar. Keep portions in check by using smaller plates, taking small breaks between servings and eating slowly and mindfully. This will also help prevent bloating and discomfort.

Including the right fats in your meals plays a crucial role in energy balance and overall well-being. Choose healthy fats like avocado, olive oil, nuts and salmon, instead of fried or heavily processed foods. These provide essential nutrients without making your digestion work overtime.
As hard as it may be to resist traditional Ramadan delicacies, it’s easy to go overboard with these sugary treats. If you have a sweet tooth, opt for natural sugars from fruits or try healthier dessert alternatives. If you just can’t resist, then eat in moderation.
Consuming excessive fried foods and sweets can lead to digestive issues like heartburn and acid reflux. Eating fibre-rich foods like lentils, whole grains and vegetables helps speed up digestion and improves gut health. Herbal teas, such as peppermint or ginger are also beneficial for digestion, especially after Iftar.
Batch cooking or meal prep is a great strategy to prevent lastminute naughty choices when those cravings kick in. Planning nutritious meals and preparing them in advance helps maintain a balanced diet throughout Ramadan, without added daily stress.
Although challenging, keeping active during Ramadan is important. Choosing the right time and type of workout makes a difference, so plan your exercise routine accordingly. Low-intensity activities, such as walking, stretching or light strength training are best after Iftar or before Suhour when it’s easier to fuel your body and stay hydrated. High-intensity training should be kept short or postponed until after Ramadan.
With altered mealtimes, social gatherings and late-night prayers, sleep often takes a backseat during Ramadan. However, getting enough rest is essential for general health and maintaining energy and focus throughout the day. So, don’t miss your beauty sleep – aim for at least seven hours by setting a routine that includes naps, if necessary.
Fasting can lead to a shift in energy levels, so if you experience any dizziness, fatigue or weakness, adjust your schedule accordingly. It’s important to listen to your body’s cues, take adequate rest and not push through exhaustion.
If you have medical conditions, such as diabetes, heart issues or require regular medication, it’s crucial to seek medical advice before fasting. Your doctor will be able to advise you on how best to make the necessary adjustment, ensure fasting is safe for you. ✤

The Holy Month brings a renewed focus on charitable efforts, with organisations across Bahrain organising donation campaigns and food distributions.
Ramadan is a time of reflection, community and generosity. While charitable giving is encouraged year-round, the Holy Month serves as a meaningful reminder to support those in need. Across Bahrain, several organisations are working tirelessly to make a difference.
A Box of Goodness, founded in 2016 by Miro Dole, operates on a simple yet impactful principle: sharing with those less fortunate. This unregistered charity runs entirely on in-kind donations, with no financial backing. Every Ramadan, supporters organise a food drive, collecting non-perishable items like rice, dates, flour, pasta, oil and canned goods. Collections are already underway and will continue until March 25, with drop-off points at St. Christopher’s School, Nadeen School Bahrain and Bahrain Rugby Football Club. This year, the organisation will also distribute Iftar meals for needy Muslim labourers to break their fast. A single meal, consisting of one chicken biryani, dates, water and pakoray, costs BD1. Contributions of any amount (minimum BD1) can be made via BenefitPay to Urban Tarka Restaurant in Galali (3316 5264). Donors should make sure to mention ‘A BOX OF GOODNESS’ in
the payment description and share proof with Miro at 3216 6900, to keep track of donations.
Indian Ladies Association (ILA), the GCC’s oldest expat ladies’ association, is holding a Pre-Loved Toys and Clothes Donation Drive this Ramadan. Items will be distributed to the Al Sanabel Orphan Care Society in Busaiteen and include unwrapped children’s toys and good condition children's and ladies’ clothes. Collections are ongoing until March 5 and donations can be dropped off at the ILA office from 3pm to 9pm.
Other notable charities that accept both financial and nonfinancial donations online include the Royal Humanitarian Foundation, Bahrain Red Crescent Society, Conserving Bounties Society and Kaaf Humanitarian, to name a few. This Ramadan, embrace the joy of giving! ✤

A mix of Persian, Russian and European influences makes Tbilisi one of the most interesting cities in the region. At its heart is the Old Town, a maze of narrow cobblestoned streets, featuring wooden balconies and historic Catholic, Armenian and Orthodox churches, like the Metekhi Church overlooking the Kura River. The fourth century Narikala Fortress offers some of the best views over Tbilisi and can be reached by a scenic cable car ride. The city’s main boulevard, Rustaveli Avenue (named after a mediaeval Georgian poet), is lined with theatres, museums and cafés, while the Bridge of Peace, a bow-shaped glass and steel pedestrian bridge adds a modern touch to the city’s landscape. One of the most popular attractions and a must-do in Tbilisi is soaking in a sulphur bath, a tradition dating back centuries. Domed bathhouses provide mineral-rich therapeutic waters, ideal for a day of relaxation. Delicious Georgian cuisine offers many local favourites, including khinkali dumplings and khachapuri, found in both traditional eateries and contemporary restaurants. Being one of the oldest grape-producing countries in the world, a day trip to the Kakheti region just outside the city is a must, where family-run vineyards showcase the traditional Georgian Qvevri grape-making method. FACT spent the day in the new HONGQI HS5, a deluxe compact crossover SUV, showcasing all the bells and whistles.
HONGQI is a Chinese luxury car marque, now established in more than a dozen foreign countries. Its determination to change the public perception of Chinese luxury and establish itself amongst the most prestigious automotive brands in the world, is made clear through every new model it releases. In recent years, thanks to the team at Zayani Motors, FACT has had the opportunity to test drive a variety of HONGQI's offerings, including the H9, the HS3 and the Ousado. Having been thoroughly impressed by what this brand has accomplished in the past, we had high hopes for its latest creation.
As the new HS5 came into view, we were instantly reminded why we were so impressed with HONGQI during our previous encounters with the brand, as we were again greeted by the visually stunning ‘Wings of HONGQI’ light carpet.
As we absorbed the exterior head-on, we admired the 2025 model’s prominent waterfall chrome grille, featuring eight vertical chrome lines and an active grille shutter. Sleekly designed LED headlights, daytime running lights and front fog lamps bestow the vehicle with a refreshed face, while the chrome red stripe that is HONGQI’s emblem flows down the centre of the bonnet and through the middle of the grille.
The fancy flanks feature body-coloured, power-folding, movable side mirrors with integrated turn signals and 20-inch light alloy wheels. We also found the body-coloured integrated door handles to add a further touch of class. Bold exterior lines and subtle chrome elements have been included around the body, adding to the car’s grand appearance.
Once at the rear, we appreciated the LED taillight strip that stretches horizontally and features an underscoring chrome accent, emphasising the vehicle’s wide stance. The integrated roof spoiler with brake light and dual exhaust system contribute to creating truly handsome hindquarters.
Lucky enough to be inspecting the HONGQI HS5 Deluxe 2WD model, we were welcomed by a spacious and luxurious interior.
The Nappa leather and Alcantara seating throughout proved exceptionally comfortable and supportive. The driver’s 12-way adjustable seat has memory function and both front seats provide ventilation.
We loved how the multifunctional leather steering wheel felt in hand and its position memory feature. Additionally, Carbon Fiber trim accents and soft-touch materials are present throughout the cabin.
The rear seating offers plenty of leg, shoulder and head room, with rear seat backrests offering 4/6 reclining for extra comfort. A generous luggage compartment adds to the practical nature of this premium SUV.
HONGQI has included ambient interior lighting that offers 253 Indoor Mood Lighting options. Combined with the dual-zone automatic climate control and the panoramic sunroof, the designers have ensured a relaxing and comfortable 24-hour interior environment.
Once we shifted our attention to the in-car tech, the new model truly began to shine.
The latest HONGQI HS5 boasts an updated infotainment system that is clean and minimalistic. A 12.3-inch, high-quality LCD screen and a 12.3-inch central control panel have been masterfully integrated into the car’s classy cockpit. We used this system throughout the day and found it compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. It also proved intuitive and easy to navigate, providing us with complete control over the vehicle’s extensive range of functions.
A 12-speaker Bose surround sound system has been incorporated into the setup, amongst several other entertainment amenities. Further fancy features of our Deluxe model included an impressive head-up display, satellite navigation, wireless charging and an advanced air purifier system.
The new HS5 houses a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder, turbo-charged, direct injection engine, coupled with an eight-speed automatic transmission. This powertrain proved to pack plenty of verve. Delivering 253hp and 380Nm of torque, we accelerated this 2025 model from 0-100km/h in a respectable 7.7 seconds. We found this forward-wheel drive to deliver a competent and capable driving experience, with both suspension and braking systems
Once we shifted our attention to the in-car tech, the new model truly began to shine.”
providing everything required for a safe and controlled journey.
An array of safety and driver assistance features has also been included to ensure the well-being of all occupants. These include but are not limited to, a tyre pressure monitoring system, hill descent control, a forward collision warning system, an active braking system, a blind spot monitoring system, rear collision warning, a reverse cross-traffic alert system, a lane departure warning system, a lane keeping assist system and airbags throughout the vehicle, amongst others.
HONGQI continues to level up with every new premium offering it produces. These cars are creating a global reputation of being amongst the very finest available on the market today. ✤

City Centre Bahrain has been a major retail hub on the island for more than 15 years. Duaij Al Rumaihi, Mall Director of City Centre Bahrain (owned and managed by Majid Al Futtaim) talks about the success, evolution and future outlook of this landmark property.
What has been the key to City Centre Bahrain’s sustained success and growth in the region and what sets it apart from its competition?
At City Centre Bahrain, our success stems from a strong connection with the communities we serve. We aim to be more than just a business – we work to become a part of Bahrain’s social fabric. Through community-focussed initiatives and a commitment to nurturing local talent, such as our Bahrainisation efforts, we create a deep sense of ownership and belonging within our workforce. This strong community bond has been the cornerstone of our sustained growth. What truly sets us apart is our ability to deliver a vibrant,
multifaceted experience. Since opening City Centre Bahrain in 2008, we’ve focussed on offering more than just a shopping destination. Our curated mix of local, regional and international brands ensures there’s something for everyone – whether it’s luxury, lifestyle or everyday essentials.
We also work closely with key government bodies like the Ministry of Tourism and the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority. These partnerships help us attract both local and GCC tourists.
Ultimately, our success lies in never standing still. By focussing on innovation, sustainability and creating memorable customer experiences, we’ve stayed ahead in a competitive market.
What are the biggest challenges of managing a large retail space like City Centre Bahrain?
The retail landscape in Bahrain is competitive and constantly evolving, so staying ahead requires a lot of focus and adaptability. Ultimately, it’s about staying flexible, keeping a finger on the pulse of the market and always raising the bar for what we offer.
One major challenge is navigating economic fluctuations. These can come from global events or even major pandemics, such as in the past. Events like these impact consumer behaviour and spending habits, which means we have to constantly adapt and support both retailers and the community during these shifts.
Another big challenge is keeping up with rapidly changing customer preferences and industry trends. Retail and dining evolve quickly and anticipating what’s next is crucial. That means we’re always investing in new experiences, upgrading infrastructure and embracing innovation. Technology is now a must-have – younger customers in particular expect a seamless, tech-enabled experience when they visit.
How do you see the future of shopping malls evolving, especially in the Middle East, and what’s in the pipeline for City Centre Bahrain?
Shopping malls in the Middle East are evolving rapidly and the future looks nothing like the traditional spaces we’ve known. It’s no longer just about shopping – retail today is all about creating experiences that resonate with people on a deeper level.
Malls are transforming into lifestyle destinations, where shopping is only one piece of a larger puzzle. They’re becoming places where visitors can explore entertainment, dining, wellness, art and culture, all in one location. The focus has shifted from quick errands to immersive, memorable experiences.
At City Centre Bahrain, we’re embracing this change and leading the way. For example, we’re developing a new Sports & Lifestyle precinct to meet the growing demand for activewear and fitnessrelated products. This space will go beyond just retail – it will be a vibrant hub that promotes healthier, more active lifestyles.
Dining is another area we’re excited about. We’re revamping our entire food and beverage offering, bringing in innovative dining concepts and first-to-market restaurants.
We’re also making infrastructure upgrades a priority. We’ve already revamped seven car park levels.
Sustainability is another big focus for us as we plan for the future. We have collaborated with Yellow Door Energy to install a solar power plant at City Centre Bahrain, significantly reducing our environmental footprint. Additionally, we’ve partnered with Bahrain Polytechnic on green initiatives, where students will contribute to projects on waste management, water filtration and solar energy.
What strategies are critical to keeping bricks-and-mortar spaces relevant amidst the rapid growth of e-commerce?
The key is to see e-commerce not as competition but as an opportunity to complement the in-store experience.
For instance, tools like click-and-collect and same-day delivery let customers shop online but either pick up their items at the mall or have them delivered within hours. This seamless integration between online and offline channels is becoming essential in today’s retail landscape.
We’re also introducing digital enhancements right inside the mall. Features like interactive kiosks, self-checkout counters, virtual fitting rooms and seamless payment systems make shopping more convenient and tailored to individual needs. It’s all about using technology to enhance the visitor experience without losing the magic of in-person shopping.
By bridging the gap between the convenience of online shopping and the richness of in-person experiences, we’re ensuring that City Centre Bahrain remains a vibrant, relevant destination for everyone. ✤
Having served more than two decades at the company, Elite Hospitality’s newly appointed Group General Manager shares advice for his younger self, who he’d swap roles with for a day and one hobby he’d love to pursue.
Congratulations on your exciting new promotion! How does it feel to be at the helm of one of the leading names in Bahrain's hospitality industry and what will your new role entail?
Being a leader of one of Bahrain's top hospitality companies, under our Managing Director Shabeer Dadabhai, is an incredibly rewarding experience. It's a unique opportunity to shape the industry, influence trends and contribute to the country's reputation as a premier destination for travellers. The sense of responsibility is immense but so is the satisfaction of seeing your vision come to life and making a positive impact on both the local community and the global hospitality scene. As for my new role, it will involve overseeing the strategic direction of the company, ensuring exceptional guest experiences and driving innovation in
our services and facilities. It's about maintaining high standards, fostering a positive work culture and continuously seeking ways to enhance our guests' stays. It's a challenging yet exciting journey and I'm eager to see where it takes us.
What’s the biggest challenge and also the most rewarding part of managing multiple properties?
The biggest challenge in managing multiple properties is ensuring consistency across all locations. Each property has its unique characteristics and staff, which means maintaining a uniform standard. It's about finding the right balance between preserving the distinct identity of each property, while adhering to the overarching brand values. Coordination, communication
and efficient management practices are key to overcoming this challenge. On the flip side, the most rewarding part is seeing the positive impact on a larger scale. Each property can contribute to the company's success in different ways and witnessing how they all come together to create a cohesive and thriving hospitality brand is incredibly fulfilling. There's a sense of pride in knowing that you are offering memorable experiences to guests across various locations and that each property plays a part in that.
You’ve been with Elite Group for an impressive 23 years. If you could go back to your first day, what advice would you give yourself?
After 23 years with Elite Group, I’ve gained a wealth of experience and insights. Here’s the advice I’d give myself:
Embrace Change: The hospitality industry is ever evolving. Be adaptable and open to new trends, technologies and ways of thinking. Embrace change as an opportunity for growth.
Build Strong Relationships: Invest time in building strong relationships with your team, guests and partners. A supportive network can make all the difference in your career.
Stay Passionate: The passion for hospitality is what fuels success. Stay curious, remain enthusiastic and always strive to create memorable experiences for guests.
Continuous Learning: Never stop learning. Seek opportunities for professional development, always be open to feedback.
Balance Work and Life: Make sacrifices when necessary and reward yourself when you achieve goals.
If you could swap roles with anyone in the hotel for a day, who would it be and why?
I would choose to be a concierge, who’s often the heart of the guest experience, acting as a go-to person for recommendations, solving problems and making sure guests have an unforgettable stay. They have a unique opportunity to connect with guests on a personal level and provide tailored experiences that leave lasting impressions. The concierge role would offer invaluable insights into what guests truly value and need. Plus, it would be a fantastic way to gather fresh ideas on how we can continually enhance our service and surprise our guests with delightful experiences.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time and what’s one hobby you wish you had more time for?
I enjoy exploring new cultures and cuisines, either through travel or by trying out different recipes at home. It's a fantastic way to unwind and gain inspiration for enhancing our hospitality services. I also love spending time outdoors or simply enjoying a walk by the beach. One hobby I wish I had more time for is photography. Capturing moments, whether it's the beauty of nature, architectural marvels or candid shots of people, is something that brings me a lot of joy. It's a wonderful way to document memories and see the world from different perspectives. ✤

You oversee Indian weddings at Sofitel Bahrain. What are the key elements that make an Indian wedding truly special?
Indian weddings are renowned for their grandeur, cultural richness and vibrant celebrations, deeply rooted in cultural and religious traditions. From the Mehendi (henna) ceremony to the Sangeet (musical evening) and the sacred wedding rituals, each event is steeped in meaning and symbolism. These traditions celebrate the union of two families. Hosting an Indian wedding at a luxurious destination like Sofitel Bahrain adds an extra layer of charm. The combination of worldclass hospitality, stunning venues and the ability to incorporate local cultural elements like Arabic-inspired décor makes the event even more memorable.
What makes the Kingdom a dream destination for weddings?
Bahrain has emerged as a captivating choice for couples looking to tie the knot in a picturesque setting. Bahrain Tourism offers great benefits for Indian weddings, emphasising the importance of making guests feel emotional and welcomed. There are great deals available with Gulf Air and a boutique experience that you can create in the air, complemented by an accommodating attitude. The airport also features stunning duty-free options. The island’s unique blend of culture, stunning venues, natural beauty and exceptional hospitality makes it a dream destination for weddings, ensuring that couples can create unforgettable memories on their special day.
What's the largest number of weddings you've organised in the shortest amount of time, and which was the most memorable?
From November 2023 to February 2024, we have had around 18 weddings back-to-back and this year so far, we’ve done eight, which is quite a big number as a single hotel in one destination. In summary, the combination of organising multiple weddings in a short time and the unforgettable experiences created during these celebrations makes my role incredibly rewarding. Each wedding tells a unique story, and I cherish the opportunity to be a part of such significant moments in people's lives.
From being the youngest head chef in her hometown in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, to opening 20 plus restaurants across multiple countries, Carmen Landsberg, Group Executive Chef at Brunch & Cake, shares her passion for food, both professionally and personally.
You oversee the menu developments for various Brunch & Cake franchises. How do you adapt the dishes for different markets to suit local tastes?
When entering a new market, we initially make minimal adjustments to our menu to introduce guests to the essence of Brunch & Cake and our brand philosophy. We believe it’s important to let guests experience our core and globally adored offerings first, while gathering valuable feedback on their preferences. After a few months, we carefully analyse our guests’ feedback, evaluate regional cuisines and collaborate with the local executive chefs. This collaboration provides a creative platform for all our chefs to bring their own flair to the menu, resulting in thoughtfully crafted dishes that ensure guest satisfaction and celebrate local flavours.
Do you prefer cooking savoury or sweet dishes, and what’s your secret indulgence?
I have a natural preference for cooking savoury dishes. Being from South Africa, you’ll often find me at the Braai, perfecting my grilling skills. However, when it comes to indulgence, I can’t resist a well-made doughnut – there’s something about the balance of soft dough and sweet glaze that hits the spot every time.
Is there a dish or ingredient from your childhood that still brings you comfort?
One dish that brings me comfort is a classic South African Braai Broodjie. This simple yet delicious toasted sandwich is made over a wood fire, and the secret is in the combination of melted cheese, apricot jam and chutney. The contrast of sweet, salty and the crispy crunch is pure joy for me – it's a nostalgic treat that still makes me feel at home.
If you had to pick one signature dish from the Aurora by Brunch & Cake Bahrain menu that best represents your style, what would it be and why?
The Pear & Barley Porridge would be my signature dish. It’s elegant yet comforting, drawing inspiration from the humble childhood oat porridge. However, I wanted to elevate it by infusing local flavours like sweet cardamom milk and date puree. We top it with crunchy pistachios, lemon zest, honey and a crispy brick pastry to add a delightful texture. This dish represents my love for creativity paired with a sense of elegance and simplicity that embodies the Aurora experience. ✤
My recent dining experience at Wild restaurant, nestled within the Sheraton Bahrain Hotel, was nothing short of transformative. It wasn't merely a meal; it was a captivating culinary odyssey that began the moment I stepped inside. The impeccable hospitality set the stage for an evening of unparalleled gastronomic delight.
The restaurant's interior is a masterpiece of modern design. A spacious, sophisticated environment unfolds, dominated by a calming colour palette of deep teal and green, elegantly showcased in the tiled walls and upholstered chairs. This rich hue is beautifully balanced by the crisp white of the marble tabletops, light-coloured flooring and ceiling details, creating an atmosphere of serene sophistication. The strategic use of natural light and well-placed lighting fixtures further enhances the inviting ambience. The furniture is both stylish and comfortable, featuring sleek lines and thoughtfully designed seating, showcasing a delightful interplay of textures and materials.
Venturing outside, I discovered a charming al fresco dining area, complete with comfortable seating and breathtaking views of the hotel's shimmering pool. The gentle hum of chilled indie music added a touch of relaxed sophistication to the already idyllic setting. Wild is, in essence, a beautifully designed space that seamlessly blends modern aesthetics with a calming and sophisticated atmosphere.
On arrival, my dining companion and I were greeted with a warm welcome from the Restaurant Manager, Rita Garcia, who guided us to our table. We were joined by Oliver Weber, Director of Culinary and F&B, who took us on a fascinating tour of the restaurant, revealing the remarkable dedication to the farm-to-table concept. We couldn’t help noticing a vibrant display of greenery. What appeared to be purely decorative is actually a thriving hydroponic garden, providing fresh, flavourful herbs and vegetables for the restaurant. The open kitchen itself is a spectacle – it’s like watching Karen Frey’s painting ‘chef at work’ come to life – energetic and lively. Tucked away in a corner of the restaurant is a stylish water purification machine, proudly presented by Chef Oliver as the source of Bahrain's purest water, producing both still and sparkling options. He also explained the restaurant’s plant forward and vegetable-centric concept, which focusses on using only the freshest ingredients to create exceptional dishes, boasting an incredible vegetarian-friendly menu, alongside prime cuts of meat and locally sourced seafood.
Our culinary journey commenced with a refreshing cold chai latte, a delightful prelude to the gastronomic adventure that awaited us. Rita expertly guided us through the menu’s carefully curated sections, highlighting plant forward, seafood and meat options. My vegetarian companion was ecstatic; the offerings transcended the usual predictable salads and simple dishes, showcasing the creativity and skill invested in each creation. Head Chef Doris Venturo's culinary artistry truly shone through.
We sampled various dishes from the menu, including Peruvian, global, Moroccan and local creations. The salt-baked celeriac, served with a rich truffle cream, dates, walnuts and a crunchy
green apple salad, was an immediate favourite. The interplay of sweet, earthy truffle flavours and the satisfying crunch of the apples was a revelation. My Kale Manchego Salad, featuring a subtly sweet smoked onion purée, was equally impressive. The Manchego cheese, with its nutty, savoury notes, complemented the salad perfectly, while the crushed nuts added a delightful textural contrast and the dried pomegranate and kishmish provided a tangy finish. This was, without a doubt, the epitome of a perfect salad.
We also savoured the Bakoula Salad, a delightful Moroccan creation that showcased the vibrant flavours of the region. My companion thoroughly enjoyed the innovative Crispy Falafel Waffle Salad, featuring a unique flat, crispy falafel made from beans rather than chickpeas, served alongside the creamiest baba ghanoush and lentil kalamata olive dip. The Smoked Cauliflower, a Peruvian delight topped with lentil chimichurri, parsley, garlic and coriander, was truly out of this world – we couldn’t get enough of it!
We also relished the Peruvian Chicken Anticuchos – succulent and perfectly seasoned pieces of meat were served with aji verde sauce and potato salad. The local beef tikka was equally impressive. While I typically avoid the black lemon spice in tikka, the generous portions encouraged sharing and I was pleasantly surprised by its deliciousness. The prime beef burger was a real treat, satisfying my craving for a classic burger with a perfectly seasoned patty, smoked black garlic
mushrooms, Emmental cheese, homemade pickles and fries. The Moroccan fish tagine transported me back to my grandmother's kitchen in Alexandria, evoking a comforting familiarity despite the different ingredients. It was a taste of home, warm and inviting.
Chef Oliver informed us that each table receives a complimentary dish – a thoughtful gesture that showcases the generosity and hospitality offered by the restaurant.
Naturally, no dining experience is complete without dessert. We indulged in the cardamom and rose ice cream, an Arabian delight with a delicate and refreshing flavour profile, and the Amlou ice cream, a luxurious blend of almond, argan oil and honey, which elevated the creamy texture to new heights. The dulce de leche ice cream was the perfect ending – creamy, smooth, sweet and intensely caramel flavoured.
Wild at Sheraton Bahrain is more than just a restaurant; it's an unforgettable culinary destination. The impeccable hospitality, meticulous attention to detail and a locally global menu that caters to every taste and preference, make it a truly exceptional dining experience. It's undoubtedly my new go-to for every occasion. ✤
Fresh ingredients meet authentic flavours at Astéria, where Fernanda Langhammer embarked on a gastronomic journey to savour Greek food at its finest.
Astéria means stars in Greek and the outlet does shoot to them when it comes to delivering amazing ambience and delectable cuisine.
The brand-new restaurant, or we could say a bright star landing on Bahrain’s culinary scene, has found its place in the heart of Block 338, where Attic was previously located. Offering a fine dining experience with Greek and Mediterranean staples, it is an eatery that is here to stay and illuminate our evenings with impressive dishes and an elevated atmosphere. Get ready to be taken on an Odyssey of flavours. My dining companion and I reached Astéria and, after a quick elevator ride up, the doors opened to this entirely renovated and enchanting venue. Greeted with ‘Kalispera’ (which means good evening in Greek), we were taken to our table. The space is divided into three areas: an indoor lounge with a DJ booth and smoking and non-smoking dining rooms. The décor features soft tones of beige and white with Greek columns, clay vases and mosaics on the walls, giving an Ancient Greece vibe without overdoing it. The predominant warm white shade reminded me of the soft sunlight that kisses this country, known for its many islands and blissful beaches.
A fish counter made of marble is placed near the open kitchen, from which you can choose the freshest catch of the day. If you want, you can peek at the spotless kitchen where Chef Antonio (the Greek chef who landed in Bahrain three months ago to conceptualise Astéria’s menu) and his team bring the dishes to life. I am a huge enthusiast of Greek cuisine. The expansive menu at Astéria shows that Chef Antonio is bringing authentic dishes from various regions, adding his personal touch to them. I couldn’t wait to start tasting. We had a lot of dishes, but I will highlight a few of my favourites.
We chose our drinks. Philia, made with passion fruit, vanilla, pomegranate and grapefruit soda, was super refreshing, while Lalia was an interesting mix of orange, coconut cream, honeycomb and lime. Mike, the barman, also from Greece, explained that he likes to experiment with ingredients and create drinks that play with the palate and imagination. The presentation is an essential part of the experience and, if you like to try drinks with unexpected flavours, then Astéria’s bar is a must-visit.
A selection of dips reached our table: Tzatziki, the iconic Greek yoghurt with cucumber, garlic and fresh herbs; Melitzanosalata, smoked eggplant pureé, peppers, pickled baby aubergine, pecan and fresh herbs; Tirokafteri, Greek feta pureé with fresh red chilli, paprika and pine nuts; and Taramosalata, creamy fish paste with olive oil, salmon roe and dill – served with fresh bread. They were all absolutely delicious and my companion’s favourite part of the meal, but for me, the Tirokafteri is a must-try, super creamy feta cheese seasoned with a hint of smoke and a spicy kick, a flavour that is impossible to forget.
From the Fresh and Raw part of the menu, we tried two types of carpaccio, tomato and zucchini. Both were served theatrically by one of our brilliant waiters, Joy De Palash, who rolled them skilfully at our table. The thin slices of fresh heirloom tomato and zucchini mixed with their unique seasonings were a veggie’s heaven in a mouthful. The Seabass Tartare was beautifully composed of small cubes of fish accompanied by
diced tomatoes, cucumber, shallot, olives, capers, basil and orange gel with a tangy citrus dressing. It was really refreshing mixing tender pieces of seabass with crunchy elements and zesty flavours. The Lamb Tonnato was quite a surprise, slowcooked lamb sliced thinly and bathed in creamy tuna sauce, it was super soft and aromatic with a lovely, sweet tone. It was time to move to the hot appetisers, usually my favourite part of any meal, and Astéria delivered them with mastery! We had the Grilled Baby Squid Skewers, which were spectacular – charcoal grilled and served with squid ink tarama (a creamy mixture of fish roe, lemon and bread, painted grey with the ink).
Our other super attentive waiter, Abdulatif, prepared the dish in front of our eyes, removing the squid from the skewers and mixing it with the tarama, olive oil and lemon before serving. Think of flawlessness in a spoonful. I am not a big fan of squid but this one was perfectly cooked with a smoky hint, and the smooth texture of tarama made it just a superb bite. We also had the Grilled Octopus, which was just as amazing, and one of my favourite hot appetisers when in Greece: Fried Cheese Pie (also known as Tiropitaki). Thin filo pastry stuffed with Greek feta mousse accompanied by Manouri cheese, drizzled with thyme honey and sesame seeds. Not every place does it right, but guess what? The one at Astéria is worth the visit.
Moving to mains, we had a beautifully presented Greek Lobster Pasta, tender pieces of lobster placed on a bed of basil-tomato linguine, basil oil, lemon zest and herbs. The plate resembled a lobster (with a head and tail made of ceramic) and the recipe was placed in the centre. The pasta was al-dente and the tomato sauce paired really well with the tender pieces of lobster – yum! The other main was the Gemista Risotto, a re-interpretation of the
traditional stuffed capsicum. A creamy risotto with elevated flavours composed of peppers, semi-dried tomato, zucchini, mint, dill and kefalograviera cheese – comforting flavours and delicious texture. The desserts have their own dedicated menu – we chose the Yoghurt Gelato and Chocolate Soufflé. I had only one spoon of the first; my dining companion was not keen on sharing it. It was truly delicious and very light, with a tangy yet sweet hint from the Greek yoghurt. I actually didn’t care much that she was not sharing the gelato because the Chocolate Soufflé was my favourite! Baked dark chocolate with a super light cake-like texture oozing with a melted chocolate centre and a scoop of vanilla on top – it was like a warm hug – absolutely delicious. After a meal that gave us a refined, fine-dining feel with authentic yet creative dishes, superb attention from the entire staff and a unique serving style, it was time to say goodbye, leaving a taste of see you really soon!
Throughout the Holy Month, Astéria will be serving a special Ramadan menu, which starts with laban milk and dates, followed by Greek traditional halva with chocolate to break the fast. It features a variety of sharing dishes, including a selection of breads and spreads, Crispy Calamari, Spinach and Feta Arancini and Fried Cheese Pie. Enjoy a choice of main courses, such as Lemon Roasted Chicken, Beef Giouvetsi, Ribeye and Catch Of The Day and end on a sweet note with desserts like Loukoumades, Yogurt Gelato and Greek Coffee Profiterole. ✤

enjoyed some seriously good food with a side of education on a visit to Palestine Nights.
Walking to Palestine Nights restaurant on Saada Waterfront, part of Bahrain Pearling Path, feels a bit like going on holiday. The bright, sunny seafront promenade, where the restaurant sits, is crowded with vibrant market stalls selling beautiful, colourful abayas and other traditional crafts, while behind them, boats, including a traditional wooden dhow, bob on the azure waters.
Arriving at the restaurant, you’ll find a small downstairs seating area, complete with fountain, before heading upstairs into the expansive dining room where signs of the founders’ Palestinian homeland and heritage are tastefully displayed everywhere you look. The floor is composed of traditional patterned tiles alongside limestone slabs, the same as those found on the streets of Jerusalem. Plush plum velvet seating bears printed cushions designed to resemble the traditional embroidery patterns created by founder Mariam Shanaa – whose original, intricate needlework is mounted on the walls – and the wooden frames of the glass-topped tables bear the Arabic engraving ‘We are the people who don’t forget the smell of their land’ – referring to how Palestinians, even now, remember the smell of their land despite generations in exile.
Proudly displayed on one wall is the beautifully embroidered traditional thoub of Amal Abdulqader Shanaa – mother of co-founder Wafaa (Mariam’s mother-in-law) – along with the written story of her journey. Made a refugee during the occupation of Palestine in 1948, she moved to South Lebanon and perfected the art of Palestinian cooking and spice mixing, a skill she passed down to her daughters. These days, that skill is still much in evidence at Palestine Nights with the secret spice mixes created by Amal, and later Wafaa and
Mariam, forming the basis for the restaurant’s impressive menu. The recipes are passed down through the generations and Mariam even told us: “Each time you eat at Palestine Nights, it’s as if you are eating in our home.”
With all this history around me, I was eager to sample the menu and, I can say wholeheartedly, it did not disappoint.
First to the table was a selection of cold mezze. Beautifully presented in small earthenware bowls on a long wooden tray supported by ingenious cartwheel type contraptions that allowed us to move the dishes to our reach.
Accompanied by fresh, pillowy bread, we happily tucked into stuffed vine leaves, baba ghanoush, moutabel, beetroot and regular hummus and my favourites: the bright, tangy muhammara – spicy and nutty, its roasted red peppers forming a perfect union with smoky walnuts and pomegranate molasses for a flavour that lingered on the tongue – and makdoos, a new experience for me, baby aubergines stuffed with sweet and spicy red peppers preserved in high-quality olive oil and loaded with spices and a hint of chilli. This became a fast new favourite both for its rich texture and gentle heat that truly made my taste buds dance. Then came hot appetisers and I was delighted to see a couple of things that were, again, new to my palate – I love discovering fresh dishes, specially when it’s so clear how much thought and tradition has gone into the recipes.
I particularly enjoyed the Musakhan roll – baked rolled flatbread filled with tender sumac-seasoned chicken, caramelised onions and pine nuts. Lightly topped with creamy yoghurt, it was like a hug in my mouth, deeply flavourful and satisfying, the crunchy bread giving way to the beautifully aromatic filling.
Shakhtoorah pastries were another favourite. Small boat-shaped pastries, their open ‘decks’ revealing a delicious filling of wellseasoned and tender meat – I really would love to know the secrets of Mariam and Wafaa’s spice blends, as pretty much every dish we tasted had subtle differences, each tantalising the taste buds to identify the mystery mixes. And, of course, I must mention the Middle Eastern staple, the kubba. We were served these crispy, deep-fried bulgur dumplings with fillings of both chicken and meat. Crunchy on the outside and beautifully rendered within, they were some of the best I’ve tried on the island.
A palate cleanser came in the shape of a fabulous Fattoush – very generous with the crispy fried Arabic bread, which is always my favourite part, and topped with loads of pomegranate arils, which I also love. I could quite easily have eaten this whole refreshing bowlful myself and left happy.
But, after a brief sojourn on the gorgeous outside balcony terrace to take in the sea view, it was time for the mains. Beautifully presented, the Quzi Malaki arrived in a long, boatshaped dish, the tender lamb leg, cooked in Palestinian herbs and spices, resting on a bed of rice topped with nuts. The slow-cooked meat literally fell apart at the touch of a fork and the lamb was sweet and juicy, perfectly complemented by a light red pepper sauce or, my personal choice, a green sauce of chilli, garlic and lemon.
Kufta with tahina put me in mind of a traditional English shepherd’s pie – minced meat layered with potatoes and herbs – but this time cooked in tahina sauce. The combination of textures and flavours along with the connection to home, made this a definite winner.
We also tried Msakhan chicken – a recipe with a story. Traditionally served during the freekeh harvest, it’s a dish that is very important
for farmers and, though the chicken is indeed delicious, the taboon bread is the real star of the show. Made in a special oven, it’s soaked in olive oil – so much so that it should run down onto your hands when you eat it (I took advantage of the proffered gloves) – and then covered in caramelised onions with spices, sumac and pine nuts. Delicious!
Mansaf with lamb came theatrically covered in a wafer-thin flatbread, which our server made a dramatic show of removing to reveal the goodness beneath. Fat, fluffy grains of yellow rice enveloped almost impossibly tender lamb baked in tangy jameed sauce made from fermented goats’ yoghurt and fresh yoghurt. A delicate blend of herbs fully enhancing the lightly earthy flavour, this was a dish perfectly made for sharing.
Though fully replete, we could not resist the temptation of dessert and my dining companions were blown away by the Mallabiya Mistika, a childhood favourite of creamy milk pudding topped with caramel and candy floss. But, for me, the star of the show was the kunafa – melting, stringy cheese, cream, pistachios and crunchy layers of kataifi dough – who could ask for more?
Throughout our meal, I sipped on hot tea and afterwards my companions waxed lyrical about tiny cups of coffee, the beans for which are imported from Ramallah. And we also tried a selection of delicious mocktails but, sadly, I’ve run out of space to tell you anything more than to try Palestine Nights for yourself… I promise you’ll thank me. ✤
FACT spent an unforgettable day and night at one of the most sought-after hotels in one of Europe’s most captivating cities.
Barcelona has long been regarded as a must-visit location in Spain. Thanks to this cosmopolitan city’s breathtaking architecture, vibrant atmosphere, scrumptious cuisine, unending shopping districts and splendid Mediterranean climate, we were spoilt for choice when visiting the luxurious Mandarin Oriental, Barcelona.
As we were chauffeured through the old city’s maze of streets and squares, we were soon captivated by the vivacity of this avant-garde city. Along with the hustle and bustle of the busy roads, we took in the array of modernist and historic buildings standing together in effortless harmony. Museums, grand churches, charming cafés, little shops, fashionable boutiques, chic retailers, attractive flower stalls and restaurants of different designs were all a part of our journey. Barcelona is a beautiful and fascinating place! Also boasting an exceptional beach and a lively marina ensures it offers everything one may desire. By the time we pulled up to the magnificent Mandarin Oriental, Barcelona, we already knew we would have to return to explore this enthralling metropolis further.
Located in the heart of the famous Passeig de Gracia, we can honestly say this five-star, contemporary hotel not only provides easy access to all the city offers but employs the most friendly and attentive staff you could hope for. From the moment we arrived, we were treated like gold, provided more assistance than we could have asked for, and experienced a hassle-free check in.
Mandarin Oriental, Barcelona contains 120 rooms and suites across eight floors, several dining venues, meeting facilities, beautiful gardens and an award-winning spa.
Escorted to my Deluxe Suite, the moment the door opened, the sight of the room was enough to make me smile broadly. With an array of even grander suites than my own available, it’s no surprise that the rich and famous frequent this luxurious location.
The first feature I noticed about my accommodation was its sheer size. It has to be one of the largest rooms I have had the pleasure of staying in over my years of travel.
Adding to the spacious nature of the room was a terrace overlooking the Mimosa Garden. This stunning feature ensured a superb view and allowed fresh air to flood the room.
Thanks to the ample natural light in the suite, I could fully appreciate the soothing colour palate, light wooden floors, custom-made woven rugs and high-quality furniture throughout.
The large bed was extremely comfortable, allowing for a peaceful night’s rest. A designated working area is situated in the bedroom, containing an impressive desk and chair combination.
Adjacent to the bedroom lies a separate living room with a dining table, comfy seating, a large screen television and other practical furnishings.
The spa-inspired, marble-clad bathroom included a large bath and a walk-in shower, along with tasteful décor.
Yet another welcoming touch was the arrangement left for me on the table. An assortment of nuts, dried fruits, fresh fruit juices, bottled waters, desserts and a large, fresh fruit platter, was a fantastic way to start my stay.
Furthermore, a 24-hour butler service is on offer for all suites ensuring your desires will be attended to immediately.
As evening arrived, we received an invitation to dine at the prestigious two-Michelin-starred restaurant, Moments. It didn’t take us long to figure out why it’s regarded as Mandarin Oriental’s premium dining location.
This award-winning venue is run by multi-Michelin Star winner Carme Ruscalleda and her son Raül Balam and boasts a menu second to none. The fresh and healthy cuisine, inspired by Catalan culinary culture, is creatively presented and tastes sublime. The beautiful décor helps to create a charming atmosphere that further adds to this already outstanding culinary experience.
The restaurant’s professional and knowledgeable team was not only on hand to serve but to educate us on our ‘Tasting Menu’ experience – a selection of 11 dishes, each more delicious than the last, if that’s actually possible.
From the exquisitely flavourful sea bream with fennel and caviar to deer loin with roasted truffled parsnip, an extensive and impressive cheese cart and delightful bitesized pastry desserts, every morsel was simply divine and
we were thoroughly spoilt.
Aside from Moments, the hotel also houses various other exceptional culinary locations.
This all-day dining venue is a remarkable restaurant featuring striking décor and a superb menu. The à la carte breakfasts, with a vast spread of fresh fruits, organic yoghurts, bagels, fresh pastries, wide range of eggs and cereals, along with a selection of traditional Catalan breakfasts, are a favourite amongst patrons.
If you're in the mood for Italian food, look no further than La Tavola. Traditional recipes have been combined with fresh ingredients from the region, resulting in a collection of outstanding dishes. Classic Italian cuisine including phenomenal pizzas, antipasto, melanzane alla parmigiana, caprese salad and buratta with prosciutto di Parma, are just a few of the delicious options on offer. The delectable Tiramisu is one of several mouth-watering desserts to tempt the taste buds.
Other hotel venues include Terrat with its 360-degree view, Banker’s Bar, with a ceiling covered in old safety deposit boxes and Mimosa Garden, a delightful and exclusive al fresco venue filled with lavender and sunshine.
During our stay, we were given a tour of the hotel’s
celebrated spa. Boasting an area of 1,000sq/m, this grand centre is equipped with all the amenities required for complete relaxation.
Experiencing this intimate, minimalist space displaying a contemporary style but with an exquisite Oriental touch, we perused the eight spacious treatment rooms in complete serenity. Four of these rooms house aromatherapy showers, two are treatment suites for couples and two are Oriental suites with whirlpool baths and futons for the traditional Thai massage.
The Spa includes an expansive 12-metre indoor heated swimming pool, a hammam, rainforest showers and a fitness centre.
Located on the minus one level of the hotel, the fully equipped fitness centre boasts state-of-the-art Techno Gym machines and is accessible 24/7 for all guests. Numerous activities are also offered, including personal training services with individualised guidance or private yoga classes.
The following day it was already time to say goodbye. Having thoroughly enjoyed our brief stay, we relived our experiences on the six-and-a-half-hour flight back to the Middle East. The luxurious rooms, the friendly hotel staff, the delicious cuisine and the beautiful city sites, all made for an unforgettable mini adventure. ✤

A telecom IT architect by day and a paper artist by night, Atamjeet Singh Bawa – known as Paper Model Guru on social media – has been refining his craft for the past 22 years. From intricate pieces, including Patrika Gate ('the most colourful door in India') and an impressive satellite view of Bahrain to giant tank models, his art has many layers (literally)! In a candid interview with Apple Sharma, he shares the story behind his unique moniker and his love affair with all things paper.
FACT: What inspired you to take up paper modelling as an art form? Do you dabble in other mediums as well?
ASB: In 2003, while I was pursuing my B-Tech in Textile Chemistry, I thought of using my engineering drawing and geometry skills to create a paper model of a WWII aeroplane. After a month of effort, I completed my first project. Seeking feedback, I emailed random artists worldwide but received mostly dismissive responses. However, one reply changed everything. DeWayne Barnett from Kentucky, USA, introduced me to 'scale paper modelling', a hobby where enthusiasts create scaled replicas, mostly of historical machines. He sent me a PDF template with 2D parts of a vintage aircraft with instructions on how to print, cut, fold and glue them together. After my successful attempt, I started tackling more complex models. This was the beginning of my journey and paper has since been my primary medium for art and sculptures.
FACT: You’re also known as the #GuyWithAirplaneOnHisGlasses – what’s the story behind this moniker?
ASB: In October 2017, I decided to create a visual identity that represents my love for paper art. Paper planes are a childhood connection we all share. Using plans of the 'LCA Tejas' of the Indian Air Force, I made tiny paper aircraft and stuck one on my glasses before leaving for work. It sparked curiosity and people started asking about my story. Since
then, I've never left my house without a paper plane on my glasses, and it has become my signature.
FACT: Paper is often seen as a delicate material but you transform it into detailed and durable pieces of art. What are some of the biggest challenges in working with paper?
ASB: Paper has its pros and cons. It allows for mistakes, is inexpensive and comes in various GSM [unit for thickness of paper]. However, once glued, it's hard to separate without tearing. The biggest challenge is convincing people that my art is made from paper! It remains a real-life puzzle for me.
FACT: Your models often focus on machines and technology. What is it about these subjects that fascinates you?
ASB: Machines have fascinated me since childhood. Trucks, JCBs, bulldozers, tanks, aircraft and road pavers – watching them function never gets old. It's a God-gifted love for machines that's here to stay. In my paper models, I focus on external details. Modern jetliners don't intrigue me as much because their mechanical components are concealed. I enjoy creating engines, gears, chains, avionics – it's the detailing that makes me passionate about my art.
FACT: How do you approach designing complex models? Do you work from blueprints, 3D renders or your own interpretations?
ASB: When creating paper models, designs are often available online. However, some subjects need to be designed from scratch. Scale paper models require absolute precision, so blueprints are always referred to. These are mostly available on the web for free.
FACT: What has been your most ambitious project to date? What makes it particularly challenging compared to your past works?
ASB: My most ambitious project has been the 1:6 scale paper model of the T-90 Bhishma Tank, now a static art installation at an Indian Army facility. This giant 6.5-foot-long sculpture [which took 455 man-hours to complete] challenged me to redefine my techniques and execution process, as no one in the paper modelling community had attempted such a large model. It required me to unlearn what I knew about paper modelling and think outside the box.
FACT: Your recent layered paper artwork, Bahrain Blues XL, represents an artistic satellite view of the island. If you could do a similar piece for another place, which location would you choose and why?
ASB: Bahrain's compact size allowed me to capture its intricate details and tiny natural and man-made islands on a single canvas. For a larger country, achieving the same level of detail would be challenging due to the zoomed-out perspective. If I had to choose another location, it would be Singapore. It was the first country I visited at age nine, leaving a lasting impact on me with its cleanliness, natural beauty and modern society. Its small size and unique blend
of urban and natural landscapes would allow me to do justice to the detailing and create a captivating piece.
FACT: As well as an artist, you’re a mentor and speaker. What advice would you give to young artists looking to develop their own signature style?
ASB: My message to young artists is simple: passion is the fuel that drives you to achieve your dreams. It’s not something you struggle for or sacrifice other things for. It’s something you embrace with joy and gratitude. Your passion is the ultimate expression of who you are and what you love. Embrace it fully and your unique signature style will naturally emerge. ✤

A compelling American adaptation of the acclaimed French/ Belgian series HPI, High Potential offers a sophisticated, albeit uneven, exploration of ambition and its human cost within the rarefied world of high-powered executives. Expect sharp writing and compelling performances.
Director: Drew Goddard
Cast: Kaitlin Olson, Daniel Sunjata, Judy Reyes, Deniz Akdeniz and Javicia Leslie
High Potential masterfully captures the internal struggles of those striving for the pinnacle of success. The series shines in its nuanced portrayal of the relentless pressure, personal sacrifices and hidden insecurities that lie beneath the polished veneer of corporate life. Each character is richly drawn, adding depth and complexity to the narrative. While the pacing occasionally falters, the overall impact remains significant. The depiction of the corporate landscape, while insightful, could benefit from a more refined approach. Certain plotlines, particularly those involving romantic entanglements, occasionally feel somewhat predictable.
Despite these minor shortcomings, High Potential offers a rewarding viewing experience. Its unflinching examination of ambition and its consequences resonates powerfully, prompting reflection on the true meaning of success and the importance of maintaining a balanced life. The series is elevated by strong performances and a sophisticated exploration of the human condition within a high-stakes professional environment. With the entire first season now available for binge-watching following the finale on February 11, you can immerse yourself completely before season two arrives this autumn.

A trustworthy former US president is called in to lead an investigation into a devastating cyberattack.
Director: Lesli Glatter
Cast: Robert De Niro, Mathew Modine, Lizzy Caplan, Jesse Plemons, Joan Allen, Connie Britton, Bill Camp, Dan Stevens, McKinley Belcher III and Angela Basset.
The six-episode limited series, released on Netflix, received mixed to average reviews. But like everything else, such as music and food, it is a matter of taste. So, if you’re a fan of Robert De Niro and American politics and enjoy conspiracy thrillers, then Zero Day ticks all three boxes.
A fan of De Niro myself, since watching him first in The Deer Hunter (1978), I was happy to see his first TV series, in which he plays the role of George Mullen; a previous US president struggling to keep a mental balance, while haunted with a past personal tragedy and a current national crisis.
It may appear to be a subtle coincidence that, while the White House was undergoing a transition of power (Biden/Trump) amid widespread criticism (among other issues) of the ‘tech oligarchy’, as well as De Niro’s own outspoken criticism of Trump, comes this solid masterclass performance of gravitas and statesmanship by De Niro.
On the whole, a gripping plot with one or two distractions, perhaps to keep viewers intrigued, as the story unfolds to its climactic ending, with a hopeful message suggesting that truth can save a vulnerable and broken nation.

By Inhaler
Written in Dublin in between long stretches of touring, Open Wide is a bold, 13-track stepping stone out of Irish band Inhaler’s comfort zone. This unique album, recorded with producer Kid, draws inspiration from early ‘70s rock and 2000s' alternative elements. The album opens with guitar heavy anthem, Eddie In The Darkness , which was played prior to its official 2025 release on the band’s North American tour in 2024. The following track, Billy (Yeah Yeah Yeah) , was released two days before the album. The build-up to the chorus, coupled with the steady thrum of the beat, makes it one of the catchiest songs on the album.
Lead single Your House , second single Open Wide and fan favourite A Question of You all include the House Gospel Choir, bringing a new sonic depth to the album, truly emphasising the ‘70s rock elements in each track.
The tone of the album changes in The Charms and all the way through the final four tracks to Little Things, feeling heavier as the thematic yearning turns more desperate than in previous ones. The last track ends much like the first begins: with a guitar-heavy instrumental that stays true to the core essence of Open Wide
By Tate McRae
So Close To What is Canadian singer Tate McRae’s third studio album, which the singer first teased in the lead single It’s ok I’m ok music video. The album includes three pre-released tracks: 2 hands, It’s ok I’m ok and Sports car. Each track achieved major success, making use of sassy lyrics, breathy backing vocals and suspenseful build-ups to catchy choruses.
The album opens with Miss possessive, a jealous girlfriend anthem over a mischievous and fast paced beat. The fourth track, bloodonmyhands, features Flo Milli, adding a perfectly timed rap break that elevates the feel of the track. Dear god was teased briefly on Tate’s TikTok and the repetitive earworm did not disappoint, maintaining the cheeky nature of the album. Fan favourite I know love features The Kid Laroi and adopts a calmer tone that ties in the last three tracks of the album. Nostalgia, which was inspired by a conversation with the singer’s father, closes the album on a sombre note, as Tate reflects on how overthinking can lead to lost experiences.
So Close To What juggles varying themes of emotional intensity, from love to jealousy and even nostalgia, making for an exciting listen after the highly anticipated release.

That same day, Nicole’s daughter goes missing, supposedly picked up from school by a non-existent aunt.

Love them or hate them, Birkenstocks have become a staple of summer footwear and the shoes, which some (including some in our office) would describe as ‘super ugly’, can be seen everywhere in their many guises. But, like every success story, they have plenty of imitators. This has led to German headquartered Birkenstock, which has been making shoes since 1774, heading to the country’s Federal Court to sue three companies making very similarlooking footwear with the argument that
Birkenstocks are ‘copyright protected and works of applied art’.
AP reports that under German law, works of art enjoy stronger and longer-lasting intellectual property protections than consumer products and Birkenstock wanted an injunction to stop its competitors making copycat sandals and to order the recall and destruction of those already on the market.
Two lower courts couldn’t agree, so the highest civil court in the land was required to decide if Birkenstocks are indeed works of art. The answer? Nope, they’re simply comfy footwear! Can’t say it comes as any great surprise.
The Bible story of Jonah and the Whale came to life recently when a humpback whale swallowed a kayaker in the waters of Chilean Patagonia. Honestly, it’s rare we thank our lucky stars for the ever-ready camera phones so prevalent in society, but if it hadn’t been captured on film, we wouldn’t have believed it.
Adrián Simancas was kayaking with his father, Dell, in Bahía El Águila near the San Isidro Lighthouse in the Strait of Magellan when a humpback whale
surfaced, engulfing Adrián and his yellow kayak for a few seconds before letting him go.
Dell, who must have nerves of steel, remained untouched just metres away and kept filming while urging his son to stay calm – can’t imagine that did much good!
Fortunately, within seconds the giant mammal spat Adrián, who believed he’d been swallowed, right back out into the frigid waters.
Perhaps the whale realised he’d bitten off more than he could chew or maybe the Chilean was a little too spicy for him.
America’s Walmart might not be one of our favourite stores at the moment but we’re loving this story.
It seems Judge Jeffrey Clothier in Michigan, USA, got so fed up with the number of shoplifters on his docket that he adopted a novel approach to sentencing. Rather than heading to the slammer, he’s ordered them to turn out in the Walmart car park and wash customer vehicles for free.
The Judge, who only recently began ordering the ‘Walmart Washes’, told AP: “I
don’t think everybody that steals is a bad person. Sometimes people are just down on their luck. But there’s going to be consequences when you break the law.” Walmart will provide water and supplies and the car washes will take place at the store in Grand Blanc Township during March and April, with up to 100 offenders expected to be getting their hands soapy.
Judge Clothier said he thinks people will find the punishment embarrassing and will hopefully think twice about stealing in the future. He’ll also be attending the event with his own bucket and sponge. Sounds like a great plan to us.
