When Cupid Comes Calling

“Love is when you meet someone who tells you something new about yourself.” – André Breton “

February is the time of year when our thoughts turn to love and romance – fitting that we’ve found something to keep us warm in the current chilly weather.

Putting this month’s cover story together gave me pause for thought that maybe we could be a bit nicer to each other all year round. But, that said, I couldn’t resist sniffing out the best romantic dining deals around the city to help make this month extra special.

Our love-focussed cover story also offers some great date ideas, perfect if you’re not a big fan of fancy flowers and even fancier food. I rather like the idea of heading out into the desert with a picnic to stare at the starry skies. But that doesn’t mean my loved one is completely off the hook. I’d still appreciate a little trinket. If yours would too, check out our thoughtful gift guide – I’ll be leaving it open at home as a gentle hint!

We stick with the theme of romance in the Travel pages with some great child-free options to explore. Yes, we know everyone loves their kids but sometimes a little break is in store and we’ve got you covered.

Elsewhere this month, we’re in full-on Fact Dining Awards mode. Voting is open on our website and we’ve been dashing around the city trying out lots of restaurants. I had a ‘Breakfast of Champions’ and sampled some of the best Japanese fare available, while my colleagues feasted on Mediterranean, international and Lebanese cuisines. Read about our experiences in our Dining section, where you’ll find some of the best meal deals around.

We also got behind the wheel of a fab new Mercedes – well, I didn’t and I have to confess I’m a little jealous. One of these days they’ll let me loose on a test drive.

February is shaping up to be a busy month with loads to see and do in Qatar and you’ll find details of lots of happenings, from Qatar National Sports Day to concerts and more in our events pages.

There’s also news from the worlds of motoring, tech, fashion and beauty. So, dig in, there’s a great read in store. With love from me to you.

A FLAMENCO-STYLE FIESTA

Get ready to party in style as the Gipsy Kings by André Reyes take to the stage for a one-off performance at Doha Golf Club on April 3.

Formed in Arles, France, in 1979, the original Gipsy Kings group has a long and sometimes complicated history. Though the band’s founding members were born in France, they have Catalan heritage and are famed for a blend of Catalan rumba, flamenco, salsa and pop.

Founders José Reyes and Manitas de Plata began as street musicians playing rumba flamenco – a poppy blend of the traditional musical styles of Spain. And, when the pair split up, José began playing with his sons as José et Los Reyes – a play on the family name, which also means kings – forming the foundation of what would become Gipsy Kings.

The band’s first two albums failed to make much of an impression but success came in 1987 with the release of their self-titled third album which featured the much loved Bamboléo, the ultimate dance tune that’s had party people the world over on their feet. In the almost four decades since then the Gipsy Kings have continued to make music, playing to appreciative audiences

around the globe with several solo and collaborative productions along the way.

Gipsy Kings by André Reyes is led by the son of founder José performing alongside his son Thomas, his nephews Kakou and Tambo, his brother Patchaï and his first cousin Mario. Together they released the album Nací Gitano in 2022 featuring a mix of upbeat songs and melodies.

For their performance in Doha, you can expect a magical night filled with the iconic flamenco-inspired hits. So, get ready to let the vibrant rhythms move you under the stars in what promises to be a night to be remembered long after the last note has faded. Tickets start at QR350 for general admission running up to QR7,000 for a VIP Gold Table accommodating 10 guests.

HIGH-SPEED ACTION

The FIA World Endurance Championship 2025 returns to Qatar for the second time this month. Petrolheads can look forward to the 10-hour endurance race featuring legends like Valentino Rossi, Jenson Button and the Iron Dames team.

Besides watching the fast wheels zooming by, there is a host of entertaining options for the whole family, making it a perfect day out. Look out for family-friendly activities and fun zones. Racing fans can also take advantage of the golden opportunity to grab paddock access, join pitlane walks and get up close and personal with the drivers at the autograph sessions before the event. The event takes place from February 26 to 28 at the Lusail International Circuit. Tickets are priced from QR200 for 12 years and above. ✤

For when dinner and roses just won’t do, we’ve come up with a selection of great date ideas to give you some inspiration.

A HISTORICAL CONNECTION

Take a road trip out of the city and head just over 100km north of Doha to the ancient archaeological site adjacent to the walled coastal town of Al Zubarah, which boasts a 20th century fort. Today, the fort has been transformed into a museum where visitors can explore artefacts from the pearl diving era.

STYLE AND SUBSTANCE

Mercedes-Benz’s latest G-Class AMG proved to be a powerful, upmarket, five-door SUV with oodles of style and in-car tech.

More than 45 years since the Mercedes-Benz G-Class first hit the roads, the company has released the latest generation of the SUV that features the mighty G63 AMG. Thanks to the team at Mercedes-Benz Qatar, we spent time inspecting this beautiful machine.

Distinguished Exterior

As the classic cube shape of the iconic AMG entered our vision, we caught sight of subtle styling upgrades.

Firstly, the AMG crest is now featured on the bonnet and exterior mirror projections. The AMG fuel filler cap is crafted in silver chrome with black design elements, whilst the radiator grille and A-pillars have been modified. The positioning of the windows has also been slightly refined.

There is now a new AMG-specific bumper with three vertical louvres in front of the air inlets, as well as stainless-steel inserts. Standard adaptive MULTIBEAM LED headlights that illuminate the road according to the driving situation, with 84 individually controllable high-performance LEDs, have also been included. When ordering the optional AMG Exterior Carbon Fibre Package, several additional exterior design elements are upgraded. At the front end, this will include a dark chrome grille, bumper inserts, darkened headlight housings, carbon design mirror housings and a visual underride guard finished in carbon fibre.

Shifting our attention to the fancy flanks, we noted the 20-inch AMG alloy wheels with their five-twin-spoke design, along with red-painted brake callipers and perforated brake disks. Various other rim options are available.

When one orders the optional AMG Exterior Carbon Fibre Package, the body will also showcase new inserts in the exterior protective trim. The spare wheel cover is finished in carbon fibre and will include a wheel ring of black Magno/metallic. The backend will feature a carbon fibre-finished visual underride guard and darkened indicators. An extensive range of exterior colour options is available.

Swanky Interior

When examining a luxury SUV, our main criteria include an abundance of space, comfort, class and natural light. The new G63 AMG confidently ticks all these boxes.

After keyless entry, once inside, the daylight streaming through the eight windows and sliding sunroof meant we could easily pick up the vehicle’s finer internal details. As evening arrived, the ambient lighting took over, providing a soothing environment. The cabin featured high-end materials, brushed metal accents and unique details throughout. These touches included an instrument panel in two-tone Nappa leather. We were captivated by the round AMG DRIVE UNIT steering wheel buttons with brilliant displays and intuitive operation. When out and about, we were able to control AMG-specific driving functions and all drive programmes without taking our hands from the multi-function steering wheel. Space-wise, even those on the tall side will experience ample head, shoulder and leg room no matter where they are seated. And all seating is both supportive and comfortable.

For those needing to move cargo, the vehicle offers more than 1,000 litres in the luggage area, a space easily increased to almost 2,000 litres with the 60/40 split rear seating folded. Adding to the practical nature is a stainless-steel rear loading sill protection strip.

As with the exterior, the interior colour range for new G-class models features more shade options than ever before.

Outstanding Tech

Mercedes-Benz has ensured its latest SUV is jam-packed with leading-edge technology, including the updated MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) infotainment system and a fully digital instrument cluster. We gained access through the 12.3-inch driver and multimedia displays featuring touch control and voice activation. The 360° camera is now situated in the front brush guard, an improved position, enabling it to provide better imagery to the display.

Certain actions can now be triggered without the ‘Hey Mercedes’ keyword and around 20 new voice commands were created exclusively for the new G-Class.

Thanks to the smartphone integration, we connected to the system via Android Auto Wireless and Apple CarPlay. There are USB ports that also enable connections to other mobile devices. Another great inclusion is the wireless charging system for mobile devices in the front.

Later, we were impressed by the MBUX Augmented Reality for Navigation, also fitted as standard. This system superimposes graphical navigation and traffic information onto live images on the central multimedia display to help drivers find their way even in complex traffic situations. At traffic lights, it displays the current light colour.

Amongst the many other fantastic features of the AMG is the standard Burmester 3D Surround Sound System. It features the immersive Dolby Atmos audio experience, which gives music more space, clarity and depth, turning the G63 into a state-of-theart concert hall on wheels. We noticed an additional illuminated speaker integrated into the headliner. The amplifier features six other channels that enable better frequency separation and sound positioning. A truly phenomenal sound experience.

Imposing Power & Performance

Mercedes-Benz has ensured that new generation G-Class owners have a little more power to play with. As we started the engine and applied pressure to the accelerator, we knew we were handling a serious piece of automotive equipment.

The new AMG G63 is powered by the tried and tested handcrafted AMG 4.0L V8 biturbo engine. The monster motor produces 577hp and 627lb-ft of torque. The engine is electrified with a 48-volt onboard electrical system and an integrated starter generator (ISG), which provides support at lower engine speeds with an additional 20hp and 148lb-ft.

Once at our test site, we achieved 0–100km/h in 4.4 seconds! This time would challenge many sports cars on the market today. To tame this beautiful beast, Mercedes-Benz has enforced an electronically capped top speed of 220km/h. Probably a wise decision.

This all-new G-Class SUV is packing some serious power, cuttingedge technology and unmistakable performanceorientated design details both inside and out.”

Another impressive aspect of the G63’s driving performance is the noise reduction. Thanks to the redesigned windows and upgraded seal, not only are the aerodynamics of this luxury SUV improved, but we enjoyed a far quieter ride.

We must mention the vehicle’s hydraulic active suspension system, that is variable between comfort and sport, along with the overall stability control. Despite the G63 being a top-heavy vehicle, we felt glued to the road, even when cornering at decent speeds. It was, however, the off-road experience that impressed us most. Along with the five AMG DYNAMIC SELECT programmes for onroad use – Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport+ and Individual – three off-road drive programmes are also available, namely Sand, Trail and Rock. Two additional off-road driving modes come as part of the optional AMG Offroad Package PRO. AMG Traction PRO generates maximum traction in the Rock and Sand programmes using wheel-selective braking torque control depending on the road surface, whilst AMG Active Balance Control supplements the functions of the AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL suspension in all three off-road drive options.

Superior Safety Systems

It was no surprise that Mercedes-Benz has included a full suite of driver assistance and safety systems. These include Active Lane Keeping Assist, Blind Spot Assist, Active Distance Assist, Active Steering Assist, Parking Assist, a Parking Package with a 360° camera, an Exit Warning Function, a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System and multiple airbags, to name but a few.

Our Verdict

If at all possible, go and try this SUV! ✤

THE ULTIMATE TOP-DOWN DRIVING

Aston Martin has introduced the new Vantage Roadster, a convertible stablemate of the world-beating Vantage Coupe.

Powered by the Aston Martin 4.0-litre V8 twin-turbo engine, delivering 665PS/800Nm, Vantage Roadster brings all the classleading performance, dynamic sensations and visual excitement of the coupe, with an additional dimension of top-down freedom and thrills for those addicted to open air motoring.

Engineering

With a total of 665PS and an incredible 800Nm of torque running through an eight-speed paddle-shift transmission, the Vantage Roadster combines explosive performance (0-96km/h in 3.5 seconds with a top speed 325km/h) and state-of-the-art technology within the classic, front engine, rear-wheel drive configuration adored by those who simply love to drive.

Featuring race-inspired unequal length double wishbones at the front, a multi-link rear axle, coil springs and Bilstein DTX adaptive dampers (with a bespoke tune), along with a non-isolated steering column, Vantage Roadster provides the precision, balance, poise and, above all, the confidence that are the unmistakable hallmarks of the truly great high performance driver’s car.

Michelin Pilot Sport S 5 tyres, specially developed by Michelin and tuned by Aston Martin, with a compound tailored to the specific requirements of the Vantage, provide not just superlative grip in both dry and wet conditions but also outstanding steering feel. The roof, which can be opened or closed at up to 50km/h, comes in ‘Z-fold’ configuration, which is both faster and lighter than a traditional ‘K-fold’ and removes the requirement for a tonneau cover, further saving weight and lowering the centre of gravity.

Design

It was essential that all the visceral impact and beauty of the Vantage Coupe was retained for the Vantage Roadster, and that

it should retain its stunning lines whether the roof is in its raised or lowered position. The dramatically angled windscreen joins with the car’s high waistline to create a proportionally perfect thoroughbred sports car profile.

With a spectacular canvas to create a sporting masterpiece, three new paint colours – Iridescent Sapphire, Satin Iridescent Sapphire and Bronze Flare – have been added to the paint palette, while the Vantage Roadster’s roof can be specified in black, red, blue or black and silver. A selection of painted liveries comes in a choice of 21 complementary colours. There are four 21-inch wheel styles, available in a range of finishes, behind which can be seen one of seven different colour choices of brake calipers.

Like all Aston Martin models, Vantage customers can explore endless bespoke and customisation possibilities via the Q by Aston Martin personalisation service.

Vantage Roadster is the latest model to feature Aston Martin’s next-generation infotainment. It combines a fully integrated multiscreen system with full online connectivity, featuring 10.25-inch Pure Black touchscreen technology with full capacitive single and multi-finger gesture control. Touchscreen commands remain balanced with the tactility of physical switches, with buttons retained for the key mechanical operations of gear selection, drive selection, heating and ventilation. There are also control switches for numerous other functions ensuring the most used controls can be operated intuitively and without the need to take your eyes off the road. Supplemented by a new Aston Martin customer connectivity app which supports iOS and Android devices, it allows interaction, control and feedback via the user’s personal device. ✤

A ONE-OF-A-KIND ESCAPE

Ammar Samad, General Manager of Zulal Wellness Resort by Chiva-Som, talks about the property’s unique aspects and his interest in Traditional Arabic and Islamic Medicine.

Throughout your career, you have worked at many prestigious hotels, but Zulal is one of a kind. How does this amazing property compare with your previous experiences?

Zulal Wellness Resort by Chiva-Som stands apart from anything I’ve experienced in my career. While I’ve been fortunate to work with some remarkable properties, Zulal is unique in how it blends luxury, wellness and culture into one cohesive experience. The focus here isn’t just on delivering exceptional hospitality, but about creating meaningful, lasting change for our guests. What also makes Zulal special is its dual concept: Zulal Serenity, which is dedicated to adults, and Zulal Discovery, where families can bond through wellness. It’s rare to find a property that caters so thoughtfully to such a wide range of needs while staying rooted in its cultural heritage. Being a part of something so distinctive and impactful is incredibly fulfilling

TAIM – Traditional Arabic & Islamic Medicine – is one of the major pillars of Zulal. Is this something you are personally interested in and how do this emphasis and TAIM’s teachings play into your management of the resort?

TAIM is fascinating to me on a personal level because it’s so holistic and deeply rooted in tradition. It’s about achieving balance – not just in health, but in all aspects of life. That idea of balance shapes how we approach everything at Zulal. Family wellness is a big part of this too. Helping families connect, spend quality time together and focus on their wellbeing is something I’m especially passionate about. TAIM’s emphasis on nurturing these bonds makes it so meaningful. Plus, its alignment with sustainable practices fits perfectly with what we stand for as a resort. For me, TAIM isn’t just a wellness approach – it’s a lifestyle. Seeing how much it resonates with our guests, their families and our team makes it all the more rewarding.

Zulal has made a point of working with local and international artists and Qatar’s creative community to bring in exciting installations. Is there anything new planned for the coming months?

We’re always looking for new ways to enhance what we offer at Zulal. In the coming months, we will host a series of residencies featuring world-renowned visiting consultants and experts. They bring diverse specialisations that draw from ancient philosophies, modern medical and nutritional science and the latest in wellness therapies, offering guests fresh perspectives and transformative wellness experiences. On the family side, Zulal Discovery is introducing exciting new wellness retreats that perfectly blend quality time together with opportunities for individual self-care. These programmes are designed to help families relax, reconnect and recharge, with every detail tailored to their unique needs. For children aged nine to 15, we’ve created three transformative retreats: Fit 4 Life, focussing on physical activity and healthy habits; Thrive, which builds emotional intelligence and resilience; and Digital Detox, encouraging kids to unplug and develop healthier relationships with technology.

You are marking 25 years in the hospitality industry this year. Over that time, you must have had some interesting/funny experiences. Is there any one incident that stands out?

Opening four hotels across three brands in less than one year. This was an accomplishment that required incredible team collaboration, high energy and passion for results.

When you are not working, how do you like to spend your downtime in Qatar?

When I’m not working, I like to stay active with HITTS training, because it’s a great way to unwind and keep my energy levels up. I’m also a big fan of American football, so I enjoy catching games whenever I can. It’s the perfect mix of staying physically active and relaxing with something I’m passionate about. ✤

The newly appointed Hotel Manager at The Westin Doha Hotel & Spa talks enhancing guest experiences and ‘must visit’ Qatar highlights.

Congratulations on your appointment as Hotel Manager. You started your career in entry-level positions and have gained experience across various hotel departments, from front office and F&B to revenue, sales and marketing. What first attracted you to the hospitality industry and which area have you enjoyed most?

Thank you very much! My journey in the hospitality industry began with a passion for service and the desire to create memorable experiences for others. Starting in various departments gave me a deep understanding of the intricacies of hotel operations and I’m grateful for those early experiences. While I’ve enjoyed every aspect of hospitality, I find working in guest relations and sales and marketing particularly rewarding. Seeing guests leave with positive memories of their stay is something truly special.

What are your plans for your new role, any upcoming changes or developments you can share with us?

In my new role, my focus will be on enhancing the guest experience and continuing to develop The Westin Doha as a destination of choice. We’re exploring new initiatives to further elevate our services, including new wellness offerings and expanding our dining options. We also aim to continue supporting and developing our team members, ensuring they’re equipped to provide the best possible experience to our guests.

Much of your career has been spent with Marriott properties. What is it about this parent company that has won your loyalty?

Marriott’s commitment to excellence, its global standards and its emphasis on providing exceptional guest service have been key

factors in my loyalty. The company’s values align closely with my own and the opportunities for professional growth within Marriott are unparalleled. I’ve learned a great deal from the leadership and mentorship that Marriott fosters and I’m proud to be part of such a respected brand.

You are part of Qatar Marriott Business Council; can you tell us about the organisation and your role in it?

The Qatar Marriott Business Council is a network of Marriott hotels in the region that collaborate on various initiatives, from business development to community outreach. My role involves working closely with other Marriott sales leaders in Qatar to promote collaboration and enhance the hospitality experience. We also focus on supporting local causes and contributing to the community. Being part of the council allows me to share insights, learn from peers and help Marriott properties in Qatar thrive.

Outside of work, you are a longtime Doha resident. What are three things you would tell visitors to the country they must see or do?

As a long-time resident, I love to share the beauty of Doha with visitors. First, I would recommend a visit to the Museum of Islamic Art, which is an architectural marvel and offers a rich cultural experience. Second, exploring the vibrant Souq Waqif is a must, as it offers a unique blend of traditional markets, art and cuisine. For a more natural experience, a trip to the Sealine Beach is perfect for those who want to enjoy the desert landscapes and serene coastline. Lastly, I would suggest spending time along the Doha Corniche to enjoy the stunning skyline views and relax by the water or visit the mangroves for a peaceful escape into nature. ✤

A SLICE OF INDIA IN QATAR

in his team and traditions.

You have mentioned that your mother was your culinary inspiration. What are your earliest kitchen memories?

I come from a North Indian family where food is practically a religion and the kitchen is the heart of the home. Cooking was a collective effort, with the entire family getting involved and, as a child, I was no exception. I fondly remember assisting my mother with simple tasks. One of the first dishes I ever learned to make was aloo paratha, a timeless comfort food that still holds a special place in my heart.

With a culinary career spanning almost three decades and having spearheaded the opening of Jamavar across India and internationally, how do you maintain the connection with your Amritsari roots and the joy of cooking?

Maintaining a connection to one’s roots while navigating a global culinary journey requires a harmonious blend of honouring tradition and embracing evolution. Growing up in Amritsar, I draw inspiration from its rich culinary heritage and keep the essence of its flavours alive by incorporating authentic spices, techniques

and recipes – such as Amritsari kulcha, dal makhani and tandoori dishes – into my menus. Whether served in their traditional form or reimagined with a contemporary twist, these dishes celebrate the spirit of Amritsari cuisine.

Storytelling through food plays a key role as well, as sharing the narratives behind each dish connects diners to the heritage and emotional resonance of Amritsari flavours. This not only enhances the dining experience but also preserves cultural ties. Finally, balancing innovation with respect for tradition allows me to adapt Amritsari cuisine for an international audience while keeping its soul intact, ensuring it remains both authentic and accessible on a global scale.

Among numerous other accolades for your restaurants, Jamavar Doha recently joined its London-based sister to become one of only two eateries in Qatar awarded a coveted Michelin Star. How did this make you feel and what message did you give to the Qatar team?

Receiving a Michelin Star for Jamavar Doha is an extraordinary milestone – a testament to the dedication, passion and creativity of the entire team. It’s more than just a recognition of excellence; it’s a celebration of Indian cuisine on the global stage. When I heard the news, I was overwhelmed with pride and gratitude –pride in the team’s unwavering commitment to perfection and

gratitude for the trust and love of our patrons. Seeing years of effort rewarded in such a meaningful way is deeply humbling. My message to the team was simple but heartfelt: celebrate this moment. This star is not just about the restaurant – it symbolises the collective efforts of every single team member, from the kitchen to the service staff. It’s a time to pause, appreciate and honour what we’ve achieved together. I also reminded them that this star is a responsibility to uphold the authenticity, innovation and attention to detail that define Jamavar.

Lastly, and most importantly, I expressed immense gratitude to the local community and our guests in Doha. Their support and trust have been instrumental in our journey. They’ve allowed us to bring a slice of India to Qatar, and this achievement is as much theirs as it is ours.

What would you identify as your signature dish at Jamavar Doha and how was it developed to appeal to the local palate?

Our signature dish is the Raan-e-Jamavar, inspired by the flavours and essence of the local delicacy, Lamb Ouzi. This dish beautifully combines rice and meat, mirroring the beloved pairing of an ouzi while infusing it with Jamavar’s signature spices and culinary techniques. The result is a harmonious blend of tradition and innovation, designed to resonate with the local palate while celebrating the authenticity of Indian cuisine. ✤

AN INSPIRED JOURNEY

Antonio Garcia De Quiros Sanchez, Head Chef at Aleph Doha Residences, Curio Collection by Hilton talks roots and culinary traditions.

Please tell us about the restaurants you oversee at Aleph Doha Residences, Curio Collection by Hilton.

I have the privilege of curating unique culinary journeys through three exceptional dining outlets.

Firstly, IKA – South American is a vibrant celebration of South American flavours. Here, we take our guests on an adventure through the culinary landscapes of Peru, Argentina, Brazil and beyond, offering dishes such as Árroz con Pato and Cachapas. Each plate is a testament to the rich, bold and authentic flavours of the region, crafted using the freshest ingredients.

The second is WAKA Terrace, an urban retreat located on the ground floor. With its chic outdoor and indoor seating, WAKA Terrace is perfect for a laid-back experience, complemented by an exciting menu. Recently revamped, it now features a new look and a diverse menu.

Lastly, Mondo Café by Lavazza is a haven for coffee lovers with light bites. This café seamlessly blends Lavazza’s Italian coffee mastery with a menu designed to suit any time of the day, whether it’s for a quick business meeting or a leisurely coffee break. It’s a place where guests can savour artisanal brews and delectable pastries, all in an inviting and contemporary setting.

Your hospitality journey didn’t start in the kitchen, what was it about the culinary side of life that first attracted you?

My journey into the culinary world was unplanned but transformative. It all began when I worked as a steward in Mallorca. While my initial role didn’t involve cooking, the kitchen drew me in with its captivating energy. Watching talented chefs transform raw ingredients into dishes that could tell stories and evoke emotions felt like witnessing pure artistry.

What truly inspired me was how food could bridge cultures, create connections and leave lasting impressions on people. Every plate carried the potential to spark joy and create memories. It was this magic – the ability to touch hearts and ignite smiles through flavour – that ignited my passion and pulled me toward the culinary path. To this day, that sense of purpose drives every dish I create, ensuring it’s not just food but an experience.

One of your past experiences was catering to 1,200 guests a night on a Disney cruise ship. This must be a very different experience from hotels. What made you decide to come back to the land-based side of the hospitality business?

Working on a Disney cruise ship was an extraordinary chapter in my career. Catering to 1,200 guests a night demanded precision, teamwork and a deep understanding of efficiency. The pace was relentless and every service felt like orchestrating a culinary performance. It was a masterclass in process optimisation, consistency and high-volume execution. However, I’ve always been drawn to the personalised touch that hotels allow. Coming back to land-based hospitality meant I could take the lessons I learned – streamlined operations, resource management and delivering excellence at scale – and adapt them to a more intimate setting. It also

gave me the opportunity to connect more deeply with guests, curating memorable dining experiences that go beyond a single meal.

The transition back was about combining the best of both worlds: the operational expertise from my time at sea with the warmth and storytelling of hotel dining, ensuring that every plate not only tastes exceptional but also leaves a lasting impression.

What is your signature dish at Aleph Doha Residences? How was it developed and what makes it popular?

At Aleph Doha Residences, my signature dish is the Paella, a culinary masterpiece that captures the essence of my journey as a chef. This dish pays homage to my Spanish roots while embracing the vibrant South American spirit of IKA –South American.

Developing this dish was a labour of love, rooted in tradition but elevated with innovation. I sought to marry the rich, communal appeal of Spanish Paella with bold South American flavours, creating a fusion that resonates with our guests. The dish features premium seafood, saffron-infused rice and a medley of spices that evoke both nostalgia and adventure.

What makes it truly special is the experience it provides – Paella isn’t just a dish; it’s a celebration. Served in a dramatic presentation, it encourages sharing, conversation and connection, turning a meal into an unforgettable event. Guests often tell me that the flavours transport them, making it a signature not just for its taste but for the emotions it evokes.✤

MEDITERRANEAN MASTERY

Exceptional food and outstanding service combined when AMS visited Akte Pier 51 at Rixos

Gulf Hotel Doha.

Walking into Akte Pier 51, we were struck by its unassuming charm, a space that welcomed us with understated elegance. We could already sense the gentle rhythm of the evening setting in as the soft glow of lights led us into the heart of the space.

A Terrace With A View

Yet, it was the outdoor terrace that first captured our attention. Beyond the glass doors, the setting sun bathed the marina in hues of orange and pink, while the lights of the city began to twinkle in the distance. A large wooden table sat in pride of place, surrounded by soft, multi-coloured cushions. The seating was thoughtfully arranged to offer both privacy and an unimpeded view of the water. There was a certain magic in the air, the kind that only an open sky and a waterfront view can provide.

The décor outdoors complemented the scenery. The natural wood of the furniture was paired with vibrant foliage, creating a lush yet refined setting. Lanterns and small candles dotted the tables, their flickering flames dancing to the rhythm of the evening breeze. The sounds of the marina – a soft lapping of water, the occasional distant laughter – blended seamlessly with the restaurant’s playlist.

Artistry and Comfort

Inside, the restaurant’s design spoke of intentional artistry. The indoor seating area was framed by striking wooden beams that arched overhead like the branches of a tree, creating a canopy of intricate geometry. The walls carried a mural-like depiction of ocean waves, their movement almost tangible, capturing the spirit of coastal tranquillity. The rattan-backed chairs and caramel-toned leather banquettes provided both comfort and style. Punctuated by delicate greenery and tasteful décor, the interior exuded a balance of sophistication and ease.

Our culinary journey began with the fresh pita and lavash bread, a simple yet satisfying opener served with a trio of spreads: spicy feta, yogurt and tarama, as well as oil infused with thyme. The breads were warm and soft, the perfect canvas for the spreads.

The spicy feta was a standout, offering a gentle heat balanced by creaminess. Each bite hinted at the attention to detail in the kitchen, a theme that would carry through the rest of the meal.

The Sea on a Plate

Next, the cold seafood on ice arrived as a showstopper, featuring a selection of prawns, mussels, oysters, lobster and calamari. Every piece was fresh, the natural flavours elevated by the accompanying sauces – a tangy tartare and a classic cocktail option. The lobster in particular had a delicate sweetness that paired beautifully with the tartare. It felt indulgent yet refreshingly light, a perfect prelude to the mains.

The octopus dish was another highlight. Grilled to tender perfection, it boasted a subtle smokiness complemented by a creamy roasted eggplant purée and capers that added bursts of saltiness. A touch of spicy feta tied the dish together, creating a harmonious balance of flavours. It was clear that this dish was crafted with both skill and an understanding of Mediterranean traditions.

Expert Care

As we paused to savour these flavours, we couldn’t help but take in the surroundings once more. The views, whether from the terrace or peeking through the expansive glass panels, remained breathtaking as the evening light softened. What stood out even more was the attentiveness of the staff. Boris, our waiter, was exceptional: both personable and professional, guiding us with thoughtful recommendations and making us feel like we were truly his guests of honour. The management team’s visible presence added an extra layer of care, ensuring every table was attended to with precision. It created an atmosphere that was as warm and welcoming as it was refined, making us feel truly valued as guests.

Surf and Turf

For the main course, we chose the lamb chops and the seabass. The chops were cooked to a succulent medium-rare, their richness enhanced by a bold sauce épicée and paired with crushed olive oil potatoes that were smooth and earthy. In contrast, the seabass offered a lighter profile, its flaky texture matched with a zesty harra sauce and sumac polenta. Each element on the plates felt purposeful, contributing to a symphony of taste that made each dish memorable.

Sweet Indulgence

To finish, we indulged in the pineapple carpaccio with peach sorbet and saffron. The carpaccio’s tangy sweetness was beautifully offset by the smooth, fruity sorbet, while the saffron added a touch of sophistication. It was a dessert that left us feeling refreshed and satisfied, the perfect ending to a meal that celebrated the art of Mediterranean cooking.

Final Thoughts

As we reflected on the evening, it became clear that Akte Pier 51 delivered an experience that went above and beyond. The care and attention from the staff, from Boris’s friendly recommendations to the thoughtful oversight of the management team, elevated the meal to something truly special. Under the leadership of Executive Chef Erhan Afacan, Executive Sous Chef Ramesh Galgana and Chef de Cuisine Raed Makke, the dishes showcased a mastery of Mediterranean flavours. Paired with the stunning venue, we couldn’t imagine a more perfect way to enjoy a special meal. ✤

LEBANESE FLAVOURS BY THE SEA

AMS discovered tempting tastes and the ideal beachfront destination on a visit to Al Sayyad.

Al Sayyad, located along the beautiful shoreline of the Diplomatic Club in Doha, is a unique spot where we enjoyed delicious food and amazing views. The restaurant’s coveted location, overlooking Doha’s famous skyline, is the perfect coastal spot.

The décor is equally inviting, with vibrant orange cushions on the chairs and tables set under large cream umbrellas, creating a relaxed yet elegant outdoor setting. We had three seating options: indoors, beachfront or in one of the beach huts right on the sand. Since the weather was cool, we chose to eat outside like many other guests. We remarked how we would make a point of coming back in the summer to try the beach hut experience.

The restaurant also had heat lamps and cosy blankets to keep us warm – a thoughtful touch for those who found 18 degrees a little too chilly. Gentle waves added a calming background sound, while traditional Lebanese music played softly, complementing the serene ambiance.

Tasty Starters

We started with hot and cold mezzeh, which were beautifully presented. The fresh vegetables were colourful and crisp and the herbs added a lovely aroma. The Arabic bread was a nice authentic touch and the appetisers topped with pomegranate looked creative and modern. Our favourite was the stuffed grape leaves. They were tangy and savoury, with rice inside that had a perfect mix of flavours.

Passionate Plates

The quality of the dishes at Al Sayyad reflected Chef Joseph’s personal touch and passion for his craft. His dedication to the menu’s creation and his pride in its execution were apparent in every plate. When he visited our table, his enthusiasm for recommending items further showed how much the restaurant values its customers. The menu offered an impressive selection of seafood and meat dishes, each prepared with premium ingredients and meticulous attention to detail.

Special Main Dishes

Chef Joseph told us that the Lobster Thermidor was one of the most popular dishes, with people travelling from far and wide just to try it. Of course, we had to taste it too. The dish had tender lobster meat mixed with mushrooms and saffron rice, all covered in a creamy sauce and melted cheese. It was absolutely delicious. The Irish lamb chops were another highlight. As someone from Ireland, who has eaten a lot of lamb, this dish really impressed me. The meat was top-quality and cooked perfectly. The chicken from the mixed grill was also spectacular. It had been marinated for 48 hours, giving it a smoky flavour and making the meat so tender it almost fell apart. It was one of the best dishes we’d ever had.

Sweet Desserts

By the time we got to dessert, we were already full, but we couldn’t resist checking the menu. The options were the perfect way to end the meal. We tried the Umm Ali, a warm bowl with layers of pastry, spices, nuts and raisins. It was comforting and full of flavour.

We also chose the chocolate fondant with peanut butter ice cream, and our reaction said it all. The warm, gooey chocolate combined with the cold, creamy ice cream was a fantastic mix of flavours and textures.

We stayed a bit longer, enjoying hot tea while watching children, who were bundled in winter wear, play on the beach.

Great Atmosphere and Service

Al Sayyad caters to a variety of dining needs, whether it’s a romantic dinner, a family gathering, or a grand celebration. The main dining area offers breathtaking views, while the indoor seating provides a comfortable, climate-controlled option. For something more intimate or unique, the private beach huts and beachfront rooms add an extra layer of charm. The staff’s friendliness and knowledge stood out, ensuring every detail of our visit was memorable.

It's easy to see why Al Sayyad is celebrated as one of Doha’s top dining destinations. The stunning location, Chef Joseph’s dedication and the exceptional quality of the food combine to create an unforgettable experience – a must-visit for incredible coastal dining. Whether you're a seafood lover, a fan of Lebanese cuisine or someone simply looking for a serene seaside meal, Al Sayyad promises a truly special outing. I, for one, will definitely be back. ✤

BEST MEAL OF THE DAY

Liz O’Reilly discovered the breakfast of champions and a surprising new favourite on a visit to Twisted Olive.

The menu for this place bills itself as the ‘Best Breakfast in Town’ and having taken a look at what’s on offer, it would be hard to disagree – though, a disclaimer, I haven’t tried every single item.

But, the combination of the bright airy restaurant with its petfriendly outdoor space – they even have a doggy menu – or the option to sit up the stairs in NAMAA’S Garden, which is gorgeous, means it would certainly get my breakfast vote, if I was allowed to vote, which I’m not.

The GM, Zoi, is one of a kind, a wonderful, gregarious Greek lady. Totally professional but also welcoming and great fun, and you can see this attitude filtering down to the staff who are attentive without getting in your face, friendly and knowledgeable. I also love their patterned aprons, which add a funky touch.

The surroundings are bright and airy and walking down the slope to Burj Doha, where the restaurant sits, you can’t miss the oasis of greenery that’s been created in the heart of the city, giving this a somewhat tropical feel.

The breakfast menu itself is vast and interesting, showcasing the skills of South African Chef Matthew Jansen Van Vuuren. And, with options including Twisted Simits (homemade Turkish bread), stuffed with fillings such as turkey bacon and fried egg; lemon sage chicken breast and white cheddar; or smoked salmon, lox and labneh; or the TO Granola Bowl featuring granola, dried fruits, seeds, nuts, berry compote and pressed honey yoghurt or the Easy Caprese – homemade falafel, Roma and cherry tomatoes,

fresh mozzarella, balsamic reduction, poached eggs and pesto Hollandaise, I was truly spoilt for choice.

I decided to go for the Marrakesh Crispy Halloumi – slow roasted aubergine and onions, tomato confit, Moroccan spices, coriander, pomegranate and grilled flat bread – and it was utterly sublime.

I am a big fan of aubergine anyway, so any dish that has this mushy legume is probably going to be high on my list. But the addition of the delicate heat from the spices contrasting with the sweetness of the onions and tomatoes was a huge winner. The aroma as it arrived at the table had my taste buds springing to attention and every mouthful lived up to that initial promise.

I also went for the Hold The Carbs, which appears on the Benedicts section of the menu but, as you might expect, comes without the usual bread. In its place, a revelation. Cheesy cauliflower fritters. Such a great idea and a lovely surprise that I have tried, and failed, to recreate at home. Seared to look like meat patties, these were crumbly, lightly cheesy and very moreish, topped with smoked turkey, avocado and poached eggs liberally drizzled with creamy Hollandaise. I was really pleasantly surprised by this dish and would highly recommend it if, like me, you’re a big fan of all things breakfast but don’t want to tackle the heavier parts of the meal. Having thoroughly indulged myself on the savoury side of the menu, I decided to give the sweeter options a go – purely in the interests of research, you understand – and before long, a plate of Banoffee French Toast landed at my table.

OK, here the name pretty much says it all – caramelised banana, banana chips, vanilla bean Häagen Dazs ice cream,

Valrhona chocolate shavings, digestive biscuit crumb and warm butterscotch sauce. Well, perhaps just the name doesn’t really do it justice after all!

Firstly, let me say that ice cream for breakfast really should be a thing. And, if you’re going to do it, going for one that’s liberally sprinkled with the telltale dark spots of vanilla and actually tastes homemade, makes the indulgence totally worthwhile. This option was a winner on so many other levels too. Banana chips, OK, yeah, I get it. But caramelised banana on crispy, dry French toast, oh my! That is a winner. The banana is warm and sweet and feels decadent, even though your head knows it’s actually pretty healthy. And, if you’re going to add chocolate. Well, it simply has to be Valrhona darling, nothing else will do. Amazingly, my second choice from the sweeter section – Health Attack – turned out to be my favourite dish of the day!

I’ll admit it, I only ordered this because I felt I should try one of the less sinful options but I was absolutely blown away by the combination of tastes and textures and kept going back for just one more spoonful.

Twisted Olive’s signature, it consists of spirulina smoothie with homemade granola, chia pudding, crushed nuts, acai, peanut butter, kiwi, banana, strawberry, flax seeds and chia seeds. At least four of those ingredients are things I spend my life actively avoiding – the whole idea of green algae (that’s spirulina for the uninitiated) with chia and acai just seems horribly virtuous. But, I’m ready to admit, I’ve been an idiot.

Sweet but not cloying, crunchy and creamy in equal part – if I’d known that healthy eating could taste this good, I’d have

converted long ago!

So, fully replete, perhaps even overly so, I finished with a cup of freshly brewed tea and watched the world go by to the tunes of chilled music and the soft murmur of other satisfied guests enjoying Twisted Olive’s outstanding hospitality. Best breakfast in town? Well, as I said, I don’t get to vote but I would highly recommend it. ✤

A LEGENDARY DINING EXPERIENCE

Liz O’Reilly encountered food as impressive as the chef who inspires it on a visit to Morimoto Doha.

The Japanese eatery at Mondrian Doha is the first Middle East outpost from the legendary Master Chef Masaharu Morimoto – who pays regular visits to the venue. And, while Morimoto restaurants the world over have similar elements, the Qatar version has some very specifically Arabic hints.

After entering through a golden-hued, mirrored corridor, which makes you feel a bit like a movie star, you’ll find liberal use of traditional elements in the décor, giving the restaurant a distinct sense of place. My eyes were immediately drawn to a glittering ceiling installation, made entirely from Arabic lanterns, that gave a gorgeous copper tinted glow, while dark toned pillars sported bronze rosettes reminiscent of classical document seals.

A sculpted miniature tree in purple bearing yellow/golden fruits plays into the whimsical world of Mondrian outside the restaurant’s doors and feels right at home in the fantastical setting.

On entry, the first sight is of a buzzing open kitchen, fronted by a sushi counter, where the numerous chefs required to produce the exceptionally high-quality menu is evident from the busy but measured activity.

There are special nights throughout the week, such as Sushi & Steak Sundays and Rolls & Ramen Tuesdays, but we chose to go for a tasting selection from the à la carte menu, suggested by Restaurant Manager Paulo Bastos, which proved to be an excellent decision.

We started with the salmon poke tacos – crunchy mini taco shells bursting with flavour from the perfectly seasoned fish which was offset beautifully by the cool creaminess of avocado. The elements came together perfectly providing a wonderful combination of textures to excite the taste buds.

Next up was Wagyu Carpaccio. Melting, buttery, well-marbled meat topped with citrussy yuzu zest that literally danced across the palate with its echoes of cilantro, daikon and chives. The exquisitely thinly sliced meat alone was exceptional but the assorted seasonings really drew out the earthy flavour without being overpowering. And the presentation, with floral leaves and bright sliced kumquats against the deep liquid gloss of the marinade, made this one of the standout dishes of the evening.

A stunningly staged raw selection followed. Sitting on a bed of ice dotted with fresh blossoms, the salmon, tuna and seabass sashimi gleamed with bright promise, each mouthful piquant and deeply satisfying, the chunky texture of the fish bringing hints of the sea to the plate.

There was a selection of sushi rolls, each more delectable than the last. The delicate morsels packed with flavour from the likes of fatty tuna and salty yellowtail, their different toppings, including blackened sesame seeds, daikon or popping, salty caviar, giving each mouthful an interesting variation of textures. The standout for me though was the aburi salmon with truffle. Oh, be still my beating heart as I remember the superbly satisfying earthy richness of the fungi combined with the salty tartness of the lightly flame-seared oily fish. I think I could have left the table happy at this point.

The sushi was accompanied by an equally impressive lobster tempura with yuzu koshu dip. It was presented in satisfyingly large morsels coated in crispy batter with the lobster shell for decoration.

The meat, lightly spicy and sweet, the flavours dancing across the tongue, was creamy in texture and utterly delicious.

The last of our savoury selections was thinly sliced A5 Waygu direct from Japan cooked on a hot stone at our table. A triumph of showmanship that also allows the diner to decide the temperature of the meat, the flesh was so tender it hardly required chewing.

The juices flowing abundantly, a testament to the generous marbling and quality of the meat, mingled perfectly with a herby undertone and sides of chimichurri and spicy sesame to render this dish another of the night’s standouts – one for which I will definitely return.

By this point, I honestly didn’t think I could manage anything else but the sight of dessert changed my mind. The white chocolate semifreddo with meringue and strawberries had my taste buds, once again, wide awake. Cracking the sugary meringue with my spoon, I paused in anticipation to take in the perfect orbs of semifreddo – a concoction of eggs, sugar and heavy cream –perched atop the white chocolate base. Determined to scoop all the elements into the perfect spoonful, we dived in and our table descended into silence – a testament to the exquisite, sweetly satisfying mix.

This sweet note, which I accompanied with a cup of Japanese tea, was the perfect way to end our feast and we lingered over every last morsel as, around us, gentle conversation flowed from the neighbouring tables adding to the atmosphere provided by funky background vibes.

Morimoto the world over has a well-deserved reputation for

excellence and the Qatar outpost certainly upholds this. From the superiority of the service to the quality of the ingredients and the gorgeous surroundings, you really know you are experiencing something quite exceptional. I can’t wait to go back. ✤

MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE

AMS discovered a great menu and vibrant atmosphere while exploring HuqqA Qatar’s delicious dining.

HuqqA Qatar might call itself a hubbly bubbly spot, but it’s so much more! It’s a place where amazing food meets a lively atmosphere. Right from the start, we realised that it’s a full-on dining and social experience. The entrance was like a movie set, with a red carpet, a large archway and trees with fairy lights. The furniture just inside was modern and stylish, with cool metallic touches that made it feel sophisticated but still cosy.

Versatile Space

There was a myriad of seating options, from elegant indoor tables with views of the open kitchen to an outdoor terrace with a fabulous view. We found our perfect spot in the cosy outdoor section, enclosed by a clear barrier and bordered by a charming hedgerow, offering a sense of intimacy without losing the connection to the dynamic atmosphere.

Impressive Start

The meal began with a medley of cold starters, a vibrant array of flavours and textures that set the tone for the rest of the evening.

The mixed mezze tray offered an assortment of Middle Eastern classics, from the creamy indulgence of hummus to the tangy brightness of muhammara. The warm, freshly baked bread served alongside this spread elevated each bite, creating a balance of softness and crunch.

Among the starters, the Spinach Tarator with Yogurt was the undeniable standout. Baby spinach, sautéed to a delicate tenderness, rested on a bed of velvety strained yogurt, crowned with crispy onions and a drizzle of rich red oil. The dish was a delightful interplay of creamy, savoury and crispy elements that felt indulgent yet fresh.

The quinoa tabbouleh, a contemporary take on the traditional dish, brought a refreshing twist to the table. Finely chopped greens mingled with pomegranate seeds and cucumber, while the pomegranate syrup infused each bite with a sweet-tart vibrancy. This was a dish that teased the palate, showcasing a playful balance of sweet, tangy and herbal notes.

Warm Delights

The transition from cold to hot starters maintained the culinary momentum with two standout dishes. The Homemade Citir Manti was an exquisite fusion of textures – each dumpling had a golden, crispy exterior that gave way to a tender, flavour-packed filling of spiced meat. Served with a tangy tomato sauce and spicy strained yoghurt, the dish was perfectly balanced, offering a satisfying crunch with every mouthful.

The Wagyu Lahmacun, affectionately dubbed a ‘Turkish pizza’, was equally impressive. The thin, crisp flatbread was topped with richly seasoned Wagyu meat, creating a dish that was both hearty and refined. The parsley and lemon served alongside added a fresh vibrancy, cutting through the richness and enhancing each bite.

Meeting the Master

This provided a great segway into meeting the man behind these wonderful dishes, Chef Dogan. He approached our table with a warm smile, eager to hear our thoughts. Proudly, he shared that

he had personally prepared and cooked everything we’d tasted so far. His expertise was unmistakable and it came as no surprise when he revealed that he had arrived only six months ago from Istanbul, bringing with him the authenticity and rich heritage of Turkish cuisine. His passion for his craft was evident in every bite. To underline the commitment to authenticity, chef prepared one of his signature dishes – Beef Leaves Kebab. The tender beef rested on a bed of creamy yoghurt and roasted eggplant, complemented by crispy lavash bread. The combination of textures and bold, earthy flavours was nothing short of exceptional.

A Memorable Dish

Ever the attentive host, Chef Dogan also asked if there was anything else we had our eye on. As lovers of lamb, we couldn’t resist testing the lamb chops – a dish we often use as a benchmark for excellence. We were not disappointed. Juicy, perfectly seasoned and grilled to tender perfection, the chops were a revelation, adding yet another highlight to an already impressive dining experience.

Dramatic Finale

Our evening ended with a touch of theatre. The Milk Baklava was the perfect finale, served in a wooden box over dry ice. As the box was opened, a dramatic plume of vapour rose into the air. The baklava itself, adorned with vibrant berries and pistachio, added a splash of colour and indulgence to the already exceptional meal. As mentioned at the start, while HuqqA is essentially a hookah

spot, the quality of the dining here equals – if not surpasses – many of the leading names in the city. The impeccable ingredients, attention to detail and stunning visual presentation are matched by the attentive service from a dedicated team. Mustafa, our server, ensured every need was met with professionalism and care. Coupled with the beautiful and varied environment, HuqqA offers not only exceptional food but also a stunning setting. It’s a place that surprises and delights at every turn. ✤ GO: CALL 4424 4866 FOR

Couch Surfing

Travelling without children can be adventurous and allow you to mingle with locals more fully. When you’re with kids, you would normally look for a place that has all the comforts – safe, spacious rooms that are well-equipped with all amenities; but with couch surfing, you get to stay with strangers, locals with whom you can interact more deeply and explore the place more intensely. This offbeat way of travelling usually involves the host offering a space in their home for you to stay, which could be a spare bedroom or their couch. Facilities could be limited for washing and cooking, and the host may have other guests or roommates staying with them. Couchsurfing is an adventurous and free-spirited travel experience, where you get to explore a destination with an insider's help and experience unique and authentic sights, sounds and tastes like a local. It can be difficult towing little ones along. Also, most couch surfing hosts are single and prefer travellers without children, so this is your chance to

revel in spontaneous fun. Check out www.couchsurfing.com for more information.

The carefree pleasures don’t have to be a thing of the past once you have a child. Bring back those romantic and fun holidays you had as a couple with these breaks that you can take annually or as often as possible. And forget the guilt. Hand over the little ones to your parents or siblings to foster their relationship with their grandparents and cousins. What’s more, it also helps in releasing stress and promotes better appreciation towards your kids when you return, helping you be more present and patient with them, while they look forward to the fascinating gifts you’ll bring back from your adventures. ✤

PARIS MEETS TOKYO

Introducing KENZOLOGY – A study of a wardrobe that revolutionises fashion, taken from the bridge-building perspective of a Japanese designer in Paris.

The latest offering from French maison KENZO enhances and refines the blended cultures that artistic director Nigo has developed at the house.

The spring-summer collection features cultural references in an eclectic style drawn from the creative exchange between Nigo and the archive of the late founder Kenzo Takada. Dress codes bring to mind both Japanese heritage and the brand’s Parisian spirit.

For men, classic double-breasted suiting sits alongside threepiece sets, graphic printed denim is used in designs reminiscent of uniforms, while nature-inspired embroidery adorns mesh netting in shades of khaki and navy. A roomy trench brings volume as jeans and trousers display soft, oversized folds and the iconic varsity jacket returns emboldened by the beloved KENZO tiger rendered in cartoon form by graphic artist Verdy. Womenswear is sleekly form fitting in vibrant shades of green and yellow, with boho-style crochet making an impression in maxi dresses and crop tops. Suits present a shining vision in dulled satin, while vibrant prints speak of journeys to paradise and sunny beach days.

We spotted multiple layers of fringing, diving into one of the season’s most prominent trends, and flip flops, much beloved in our region, were everywhere on the runway ranging from flats to chunky platform options, offering height combined with comfort. In accessories, the tiger was back in the form of a plush backpack and badges, while the guys hit the runway sporting oversized totes, another sign of returning practicality.

In this collection, Nigo shows a firm grasp of the brand’s history, while adding his own up-to-the-minute style influences for a collection that’s both trendy and infinitely wearable. ✤

PLAYING FIRST FIDDLE

FACT caught up with Olga

owner and CEO Four Quarters Events to learn about her musical career and future plans.

Stsepanenka

You are a professional violinist with classical training. How did you move from the orchestra pit to playing in a hospitality setting, such as at hotels in Qatar and at Universal Studios, Beijing, China?

As professional musician I always wanted to tour with an orchestra. I played violin with the symphony orchestra of the Belarusian State Academic Musical Theatre. It was an awesome experience to play not only masterpieces of classic music, but well known musicals and original productions. I was lucky to be a part of the friendliest orchestra in the country.

I was there for four years and I was absolutely inspired by the magic of shows coming together from scratch. I wanted to see more, to know more about shows and decided to start to work in hospitality in the Middle East as solo performer. But being a solo performer required new skills that I aimed to acquire. You have to move out of your comfort zone, think out of the box and you discover unexpected qualities in yourself.

My experience in China was absolutely spontaneous. It was during covid and I had to go back to Belarus. After a few months, I got an invitation to one of the most exciting places in the world – the new Universal Beijing Resort in China. It was an important and fateful step in my career

which led me to where I am today.

Part of Universal Studios, it’s one of the biggest parks in the world with a lot of shows. The majority of the performers are from the USA and Australia. I was part of a violin trio show which required not only playing but dancing, singing and interacting with the audience. We got great lessons from the best teachers in the world to create one of the most exciting shows. This opened up new possibilities for me, taught me how to interact with the public and how to be a stage artist. That kind of place plus performers who had experience in the best cruise liners, Cirque du Soleil and Universal Studios in Orlando, is very inspiring.

In August 2022, you created the Four Quarters Electro show quartet, the first of its kind in Qatar. Please tell us about that, how it came about and some of your most exciting performances.

The idea of Four Quarters electro show quartet came up during my work at Universal Studious. I saw a lot of positive and negative things involved in the procedures of show production and I already knew what I needed to do and how. Coming back to Qatar involved a completely different set of activities such as running the show, not only performing. Choosing the musicians, creating the

music and costumes and dealing with suppliers took a lot of effort and time. The only one thing I knew for sure was who I wanted to work with.

The idea for our first costumes (gold roses) was inspired by a quartet group in Las Vegas but actually, I was more excited about the possibility of making my own musical arrangements.

Now we are a well-known company and creative team in the Qatar market. Anything you want to create, from a bridal entrance to a full show performance, Four Quarters’ team can take care of it. Electro show quartet is our calling card and pride.

The most exciting performance is, of course, always the first performance. There's a mix of flurry and excitement.

Audience emotions are the greatest reward for any musician. But, discussing that question with the team, we came to the conclusion that our performance for H.H. the Amir at the opening of Qatar Economic Forum was the most exciting one.

You’re also the owner and CEO of Four Quarters Events – did this follow on from the electro show and what does the company do?

Being a part of many events I noticed a lack of entertainment in the country. Qatar is a young country and we are just blazing a trail into the world of highquality entertainment. We want people to understand that it’s possible to witness a good sound and not only at a symphony orchestra concert. Playing jazz or pop also requires sound culture and techniques. At the same time, we sincerely want to preserve the culture of the country performing Khaliji and Qatari music. We are going to fully implement this in our new project – the orchestra of Four Quarters that you will be able to check out soon on our social media.

Four Quarters Events provides entertainment for events with instruments such as violin, harp, cello, piano and saxophone as well as singers. It includes our shows with a mix of musicians from duos to a full orchestra. Qatar is a conservative country and there can be suspicion of new acts but we persistently instill an understanding of the existence of different instruments. For example, we were first to bring a professional concert pedal harp and our bestselling project ‘Burj Khalifa’ – a four-metre-high violinist – started a trend.

Our second field is dance performance. We provide highend direction in art with talented ballet dancers.

On a more personal note, when did you first start playing the violin and what is it about the instrument that attracts you?

I started to play violin really late – at 11 years. Yes, for musician's that’s already late! I'm from Belarus and in our culture it's usual to go to music school. Choosing the instrument was a spontaneous decision. Violin is a hard instrument and, professionally, you'll keep learning all

your life. That's why it requires so long in school, then college and academy and it's always good to get a master’s degree as well. Our policy is working only with qualified people to have respect for the occupation as it takes a lot of effort, time and financial input. Violin is the most popular instrument in Qatar and we have done an excellent job of dividing the market into high-quality standards and the rest of the field.

And what first brought you to Qatar? What do you enjoy most about the country?

To my shame I didn't know anything about Qatar before, only that it is a Middle Eastern country. I was pleasantly surprised when I arrived. It is modern, active, friendly and a beautiful place. Only after a noisy metropolis can you understand the value of a calm and family-oriented country. Every country has its own special features and Qatar has its own charm as well. If we speak about Qatar as a state, the power of the law is the most important thing as for a business owner. ✤

BIG SCREEN Back in Action Mufasa: The Lion King

Need to Know:

The plot involves two ex-CIA spies, Emily and Matt (played by Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx), who are pulled back into espionage after their secret identities are exposed. This is the third time the actors have paired after previous movies Any Given Sunday in 1999 and Annie in 2014.

Director: Seth Gordon

Cast: Jamie Foxx, Cameron Diaz, Jamie Demetriou, Kyle Chandler and Glenn Close

Why Is It Worth Watching?

Movie critics have given Back in Action ratings of 2.5 on a scale of one to four, and others 5.6 out of 10. What is worth noting, though, is the fact that Jamie Foxx suffered a brain bleed, which resulted in a stroke in April 2023 while shooting the movie, and was unwell for a while. So, this really marks a triumphant return to being back on set, showing determination to overcome adversity. Cameron Diaz, on the other hand, came out of a 10-year retirement where she was focussing on family, to reunite with Jamie. The pair have an electric chemistry and Director Seth Gordon (Horrible Bosses, Four Christmases) knows how to film fast-moving comedies with star appeal. Both actors proved they haven’t lost their onscreen charisma. They were terrific together while engaging in high-wire action sequences. Overall impression? Not entirely a déjà vu but if you’ve enjoyed watching Cameron Diaz in Knight and Day with Tom Cruise, then this will be a worthwhile entertainment while folding laundry in your living room.

“The film cleverly weaves in flashbacks, revealing the backstories of key characters and how they shaped Mufasa’s destiny.”

Need to Know:

A prequel to the beloved classic, Mufasa: The Lion King explores the origins of one of Disney's most iconic characters. With stunning animation and a heartfelt narrative, it dives into themes of leadership, family and the circle of life.

Creators: Barry Jenkins

Cast: Aaron Pierre, Seth Rogen, John Kani

Why Is It Worth Watching?

Mufasa, voiced by Aaron Pierre, is portrayed as a character of depth and complexity, navigating the challenges of becoming a king. The film begins with Mufasa’s early days, highlighting his journey from a young cub to a wise leader of the Pride Lands.

The animation is breathtaking, showcasing vibrant landscapes and lifelike animal characters that immerse viewers in the African savanna. The storytelling is rich and layered, with moments of joy interspersed with poignant lessons about responsibility and sacrifice.

Supporting characters, including Rafiki and Zazu, provide both comic relief and wisdom, enriching Mufasa's journey. The film cleverly weaves in flashbacks, revealing the backstories of key characters and how they shaped Mufasa’s destiny.

While it pays homage to the original film, Mufasa stands on its own, offering fresh perspectives and emotional depth. The themes of love, loyalty and the burdens of leadership resonate with audiences, making it a compelling watch for both fans of the franchise and newcomers alike.

If you find yourself enchanted by this tale, you'll be pleased to know that discussions for a sequel are already underway, promising more adventures in the Pride Lands.

HIP-HOP/RAP

Can’t Rush Greatness By Central Cee

Can’t Rush Greatness is Oakley Neil Caesar-Su, better known as Central Cee’s, debut album following his previous two mixtapes: 23 and Wild West. The rapper saw major success in 2022 when hit single Doja was featured in a commercial directed by Cole Bennet, continuing to build his portfolio through collaborations with big names like Drake, The Kid LAROI, PinkPantheress and J Cole.

Can’t Rush Greatness is the final project of works spanning two years, including tracks like Gen Z Luv and BAND4BAND, which had viral moments online after their 2024 release. First teased in May 2024 with the letters ‘CRG’ embellished at the start of Central Cee’s CC Freestyle video, the album was officially announced on October 31, 2024, along with the title, artwork and January release date. Can't Rush Greatness is mostly about Central Cee's rise in the rap industry, particularly fame and the paranoia that comes with it. He talks a lot about how fame has changed and shaped him, though not always for the better. He explained that despite delaying his progress, the energy he put into the album and the timing of the release fully encapsulates what it is at its core: a reminder to people that they are human. Although the album has been in the works for almost two years, as the title suggests: you simply Can’t Rush Greatness.

DANCE/ELECTRONIC

EUSEXUA FKA Twigs

EUSEXUA is FKA Twigs’ third studio album, taking on a euphoric tone with the singer’s high notes and use of sound effects. The release came into existence when FKA Twigs experienced moments of healing and spontaneity in Prague. The word ‘Eusexua’ was penned by the singer, and she described it as 'The pinnacle of Human Experience'.

The artist played the track EUSEXUA and other unreleased projects for the first time at Valentino L’École for the Spring 2024 event, however, the title track was the only one to make it onto the album.

EUSEXUA features artists like Koreless on the track Drums of Death and even North West on Childlike Things , where she has a verse in Japanese.

EUSEXUA is about finding a euphoric feeling and holding onto it but, on the flip side, explores how searching for a feeling can leave someone feeling trapped.

Overall, the album’s concluding track, Wanderlust, ends on a hopeful note. It even goes so far as to break the fourth wall with lyrics such as “Album's way too long though” and “I'll be in my head if you need me, right there if you need me”, as though encouraging the listener to live their life outside of the album.

What We’re (Still) Talking About

What can money not buy?

In a plot twist worthy of a Hollywood blockbuster, Saudi Arabia has reportedly enlisted Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer to give its national anthem a bit of a remix. Because why settle for the usual pomp and ceremony when you can have the guy who scored The Dark Knight and Dune bring in glamour? Reported by The Guardian , according to Turki Alalshikh, the head of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority, Hans has signed on to rework the anthem

‘with different instruments’. So, what does that mean? A full orchestral explosion? An Interstellar-style organ crescendo? The suspense is killing us. But wait, there's more. The maestro isn’t stopping at anthems. There’s talk of a Saudi-themed musical called Arabia , a film score for The Battle of Yarmuk and a ‘very large concert’. Basically, Hans is about to make Saudi Arabia sound like an epic movie trailer.

Short Lived Panic

For a few agonising hours, TikTok vanished from the US app stores, sending millions into a full-blown frenzy. No dance challenges, no lip-sync battles, no endless stream of brain rot. THE HORROR! While most people anxiously refreshed their screens, wondering if they’d have to start talking to their families again, others saw a business opportunity. According to USA TODAY, some quick-thinking folks realised that their phones – with the still-working TikTok app – had suddenly become priceless

commodities. Listings popped up on eBay with iPhones going for as much as USD25,000, promising desperate TikTok addicts a way back into their beloved app. But of course, the hysteria was short-lived. Before anyone could actually sell a kidney to fund their TikTok-ready iPhone purchase, the app was restored after Trump and TikTok came to a last-minute agreement. But for a brief, shining moment, we got to witness peak internet capitalism: supply, demand and an overwhelming fear of missing out on a cat doing backflips.

The Ultimate Catfish

Anne, a 53-year-old French interior decorator, thought she was in a passionate online romance with Brad Pitt. It all started when Brad Pitt’s mother (also fake) reached out, claiming her son needed someone like Anne. Flattered, she soon found herself exchanging messages with AI-generated Brad, who knew exactly how to woo a woman. Right up until he needed USD1 million for a kidney treatment, supposedly locked out of his accounts due to his divorce with

Angelina Jolie. Fresh from her own divorce, Anne wired him USD850,000 from her settlement. Their love lasted until the real Brad Pitt stepped out with his actual girlfriend in Venice and Anne realised, she’d been scammed. Now broke and publicly mocked, Anne insists she only wanted to help someone in need. Lesson learnt: if Brad Pitt DMs you, maybe don’t entertain him!
