THE HOLY MONTH ISSUE

VENETIAN PRINCESS

Editor’s Letter

The Holy Month is here, and even for those who don’t embrace the rituals and traditions, it is a month of reflection, especially after living many years in the Middle East. It’s a period of connecting with loved ones and yourself. Kindness is highly encouraged, and the attitude changes to a quieter mode. The wardrobe becomes more modest and the silhouette changes to loose fittings. It’s time to embrace glamorous dresses and intricate kaftans in flowy fabrics. We bring a selection of pieces from an array of collections specifically created for this time of the year – from well-known international brands to regional labels. Embrace magical nights in beautiful outfits.

March is also International Women’s Day and Mother’s Day, so don’t forget to celebrate the incredible women in your life. A big hooray to us!

On the beauty side of life, it’s time to invest in nourishing products and therapies. I had a super hair treatment at GLAMbar and a head-to-toe pampering session at Lamara Spa, InterContinental Doha The City – lucky girl here! Another important aspect to consider, especially this month for those fasting, is the quality of your sleep. Bushra Hakim finds ways to help us improve our Zzzz time.

If you want to take a break from routine, a staycation at Alwadi Hotel Doha – MGallery Collection might be the place to go. You can read about our experience there on our Local Escapes pages. However, if you have some days off to travel, embrace spring and explore the destinations where flowers blooming is their biggest attraction.

We dined at the Michelin-starred Jamavar Doha for a fabulous Indian feast. And just as every month, we get to drive really nice cars, and this time, we were behind the wheel of the stylish new MINI Cooper S. I hope you enjoy reading the carefully selected content we prepared for you.

Strange But PRETTY

This month, we’ve chosen items that have something out-of-the-box about them yet are completely wearable – there is no absurd fashion here – we would wear these. What about you?

With a low-key mindset, this short-in-the-front and long-in-the-back sort of kaftan from the Azzi&Osta Ramadan collection brings a creative way to embrace a modest look. Paired with wide-legged trousers, it gives a fresh take on demure style.

These Christian Louboutin heels reproduce the typical pointe shoe design and ankle straps, while a sandal-like heel supporter and thin heels make every girl’s ballerina dreams come true.

Also proposing a twist in the ballerina trend, this Ferragamo footwear uses the fabric strap as inspiration – a more grown-up interpretation of the style.

FENDI’s bag bracelet keeps your belongings safe and sound while leaving your hands free for more important things, such as holding a drink and grabbing food during the many gatherings this month.

We love Prada’s necklace made with pinkish extra-large beads. The item is from the brand’s Ramadan collection but can easily adorn your summer outfits.

ON THE LOOSE

Oversized pieces such as tent dresses and wide coats are a great wardrobe choice for a modest and comfortable aesthetic.

MICHAEL KORS COLLECTION

OUT OF OFFICE

Tailored pieces are still very popular. However, they are coming with a new proposal that is more casual and has a less structured silhouette. Different materials, patterns and colours are also in the pipeline – the trick is to use a more relaxed approach.

SPORTS DAY

Embrace a laid-back outfit with athleisure pieces. Just as tailored pieces are taking on an informal twist, sportive elements are receiving elevated status – it’s a fashion game where the winner is always you!

Colourful accessories add an interesting accent to your outfits.

For this month's news roundup we bring to you a mix of art, sustainability and style.

Art Lives Forever

The Louvre Couture: Objets d'Art, Objets de Mode exhibition, running until July 21, is exhibiting three iconic Versace garments, each exemplifying the house's signature design codes that bridge classical art and contemporary fashion. The Metal Mesh Gown from Atelier Versace Fall and Winter 1997 features the house's revolutionary metal mesh fabric, inspired by Ancient Greek peplum dresses and adorned with topaz-coloured Swarovski crystals in Byzantine cross motifs. The Clashed Minidress from Fall and Winter 2002 embodies Versace's 'Rockoco' aesthetic, merging Rococo opulence with modern rock 'n' roll energy. Finally, the Barocco Trench Coat from Spring and Summer 2018 celebrates the iconic Barocco print with ornate blossoms, Acanthus leaves and regal crowns, reflecting the house's rebellious classicism. These garments not only represent Versace's enduring dialogue with the arts but also continue to inspire current collections, ensuring that classical inspirations remain relevant even today.

Speed Meets Sustainability

The Rasant, a new unisex sneaker from Stella McCartney and adidas, made its debut at the designer's Summer 2025 runway show. Inspired by vintage racing shoes and the iconic adidas Monza sneaker, the design blends performance and style with a streamlined hightop silhouette crafted from cruelty-free, animal-free materials. The sneaker's name, derived from the German word for rapid, pays homage to its motorsport heritage, referencing styles worn by legendary drivers like Mario Andretti and Michèle Mouton. Featuring cascading layered laces and a neutral colour palette, the Rasant reflects the brand's signature fusion of glamour with sportiness and feminine with masculine. This latest release builds on a longstanding partnership between adidas and Stella McCartney, which began in 2005 and has continuously pushed the boundaries of sustainable innovation in sportswear.

For the Ultimate Globetrotter

RIMOWA and Rick Owens have come together for a limited-edition collaboration that reimagines luxury travel with a bold, artistic touch. The result is the RIMOWA x Rick Owens Original Cabin Bronze, a suitcase that merges Rick's distinctive aesthetic with RIMOWA's signature aluminium craftsmanship. The key feature is the unique patinated bronze finish, achieved through a meticulous pigment application process that ensures no two pieces are exactly alike. Inside, the suitcase features RIMOWA's first-ever fully leather interior, sourced directly from the Rick Owens brand. This extends to the Flex Dividers, creating a cohesive design that reflects both labels' commitment to quality. Each of the 500 numbered pieces also comes with a hair-on cowskin luggage tag, further enhancing the tactile experience. Subtle co-branding keeps the design minimalistic while the suitcase evolves, deepening its character with every journey.

A Floral Touch

Chloé extends its Atelier des Fleurs experience into the realm of body care with the launch of Atelier des Mains, a new line of scented hand care products. This collection introduces a finely foaming soap and a rich hand cream, both infused with the delicate aromas of Chloé's signature blooms: Cedrus, Santalum and Magnolia Alba. True to the brand's eco-conscious ethos, it's vegan, free from artificial colours, and crafted with 95% to 96% natural-origin ingredients. The scented soap, embossed with the maison's emblem, lathers into an airy foam, leaving hands softly perfumed. Complementing the soap, the hand cream provides deep hydration with shea butter while absorbing quickly without residue. The collection marks the beginning of a broader range of body care rituals, with future releases set to include floral body lotions, solid perfumes and much more.

Sacred Rhythms of Ramadan

The watch brand Jaeger-LeCoultre unveils its latest collaboration under the Made of Makers programme (an initiative that combines horology and art) with Emirati designer Khalid Shafar. Known for his fusion of Emirati cultural heritage and contemporary design elements, he interpreted the maison’s celestial movements through Ramadan’s lunar cycle in the Crescent To Crescent art installation. Featuring 29 moons representing each day of the lunar cycle, the installation highlights the passage of time throughout the month. Subtle design details honour the maison’s craftsmanship, expressed through delicate engravings that mirror the guilloché decorative technique mastered in the Manufacture’s Métiers Rares atelier. The installation offers two viewing experiences – one side showcases a colour gradient, reflecting the moon’s daily evolution across the month of Ramadan, while the other immerses viewers in a dynamic play of light, illuminating each moon as they move through the space. This dual perspective invites viewers to engage with time in an immersive way.

SERPENTINE GAZE

BVLGARI’s celebrated Serpenti meets MB&F’s avant-garde horology in a one-of-a-kind collaboration.

Both BVLGARI and MB&F (Maximilian Büsser & Friends) are unique in their own ways but they have come together to create something truly different. BVLGARI brings its rich jewellery-making heritage, while MB&F takes a bold, futuristic approach, creating timepieces that resemble kinetic sculptures rather than traditional watches. This partnership has led to the concept of a timepiece that is as much an artistic statement as a feat of engineering.

This isn’t the first time the two brands have worked together. MB&F thrives on collaboration, bringing in independent watchmakers, artisans and designers to help realise its boundary-pushing concepts. The brand’s Horological Machines draw inspiration from themes as varied as science fiction, supercars and nature, making each creation distinct and imaginative. BVLGARI, with its rich history in jewellery and watchmaking, has a legacy of daring designs. The 2021 collaboration between the two resulted in the MB&F x BVLGARI LM FlyingT Allegra, a watch that combined mechanical ingenuity with BVLGARI’s signature gemstone aesthetic. After its success, they set out to develop something even more ambitious.

Enter the BVLGARI x MB&F Serpenti, a reimagining of one of BVLGARI’s most iconic designs. Since its debut in 1948, the Serpenti has symbolised transformation and elegance, but this version takes it to an entirely new level. Bringing the Serpenti into MB&F’s horological universe required not only a fresh approach to its aesthetics but also a complete rethinking of its mechanical structure.

The case, shaped like a snake’s head, is a sculptural masterpiece that took hundreds of sketches and numerous 3D-printed prototypes to perfect. Five sapphire crystals, including those forming the snake’s eyes, allow a glimpse into the intricate workings of the movement. Waterresistant up to 30 metres, the watch’s artistry does not compromise its technical robustness.

The movement itself is a marvel of precision and creativity. Instead of traditional hands, the watch displays time using two rotating domes – one for hours and one for minutes. The left dome completes a full rotation every 12 hours, while the right turns every 60 minutes. Crafted from ultra-light aluminium and treated with Super-Luminova, these domes glow in low light, evoking the hypnotic gaze of a snake. A 14mm flying balance wheel, prominently positioned at the top, beats at 18,000 vibrations per hour. The watch also boasts a 45-hour power reserve, with a discreet indicator on the case back, visible through the sapphire crystal.

Only 99 pieces will be produced, spread across three versions. The titanium edition features blue domes and a hand-stitched blue rubber strap. The 18-carat rose gold model has striking green domes with a matching rubber strap, while the black PVD-coated stainless steel version stands out with vivid red domes and a black rubber strap. Each case measures 39mm and is secured with a Velcro strap system for a comfortable fit.

TALENT IN JEWEL FORM

OHLALA had the opportunity to interview the mastermind behind the quintessential jewellery brand Garrard, Sara Prentice, Chief Creative Officer, for an in-depth talk about her career and brand vision.

OHLALA – Can you tell us how the jewellery universe entered your life?

Sara Prentice – I’ve always known I wanted to work in a creative field, but I wasn’t sure exactly which direction to take. I initially considered fashion design, but during an open day at my local college, I got lost on my way to the fashion department. A gentleman noticed my struggle and offered help. He saw I was carrying my portfolio and asked if I had ever thought about jewellery design. He promised to show me the way if I returned afterward to show him my portfolio. I kept my promise, and that moment marked the beginning of my journey into jewellery design. In my final year of studying jewellery design and making, Cartier approached my college and asked if they could recommend a couple of candidates to work with the company. I was selected for the role. I spent 12 years with Cartier, learning invaluable skills. From there, I moved to Graff for eight years and then to Fabergé before joining Garrard. It’s been 12 years with Garrard now, and I feel deeply connected to the brand – it’s in my blood.

OHLALA – What makes Garrard, Garrard?

Sara – We’ve got the heritage, the craftsmanship and the design. The combination of these three pillars is what makes a Garrard piece.

OHLALA – What part of working with or on a new collection do you like most? Where do you find inspiration?

Sara – The bit I love most is seeing the design come into realisation. We

do a lot of product development along the way and when we see the final piece, it’s a wow moment. However, I enjoy the whole process from the very beginning to the end. My team and I always go offsite when we start a new collection. We move away from the office and I bring big mood boards. But by then, we’ve done our research and already know what the theme will be. We are never short of ideas because we have almost 300 years’ worth of inspiration. With Fanfare, for example, we went back to our very beginning, in 1735. During this year, we had our very first store, which was located in the theatre district in London. At the time, there were masquerade balls after the opera and Garrard used to supply all the silverware. From there, we got our inspiration. What happens at a masquerade ball? You have these beautiful fans. We then looked into their shape, and that’s how Fanfare was created. There are many different sentiments about what we do, but it’s all related to our history.

OHLALA – You also revisit collections. Can you tell us more about the Wings line?

Sara – I love that you brought this one up. The Wings is the only collection I kept when I joined in 2012. It was first designed in 2003. But when I joined in 2012, I had to look at everything. It was like, what do I want to keep? Wings I absolutely had to keep. It has a great design and resonates well with our customers, particularly in the Middle East. The challenge was how to move it forward. The original one was all pavé diamonds. I started looking at it, and there has been a lot of evolution in the

Wings. We have them in different colours and ombre. We’ve recently done Wings Rising, a more contemporary version of the design with movement and dimension added to it. I think what is quite unique about my team and me is that we all have a background in jewellery manufacturing. So, it’s not just about the design, not just a two-dimensional design on a piece of paper.

OHLALA – What, in your opinion, gives people a deep appreciation for jewels? What do you think causes this fascination?

Sara – I think it gives them confidence. But first and foremost, they’ve got to love the piece. Jewellery, for me, is a purchase of passion. Someone wouldn’t come in and say, oh, I want something. It tends to be that they see something and purchase it because they love it. It’s about sentiment. When my team and I are designing a piece of jewellery, particularly a collection, we want to talk to as many people as we can. It’s challenging, but I want someone to look at a collection and think, you know what? That talks to me. And I believe it is essential for me and my team that the jewellery is worn. It shouldn’t be something you like and keep inside a safe. Our pieces have an outstanding value that grows. But, for me, you’ve got to wear it. Wear it and love it.

to look at our pieces and have an understanding that they are Garrard. When we’re designing, we’re not frivolous with our designs. Everything has to have a purpose and a certain aesthetic. I love balance. When we did the Fanfare line and offset it, I was not convinced at the beginning, but then we worked with the curves and shape, and despite being offset, it is balanced.

OHLALA – What are the brand’s highlights for 2025?

OHLALA – Do you have a favourite collection?

Sara – Every collection I do is my favourite. There are some things that I personally, perhaps, wouldn’t choose, like a particular colour. But I think in terms of what I work with, I love everything. I want people

Sara – Our new collection, Lotus. That is a highlight, along with the fact that we are turning 290 years old. Lotus is inspired by a piece called the Lotus Tiara, made for Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother, in the early 1900s. There is an image from the 1920s of her wearing it as a bandeau. It was a little bit different, and it is such an iconic, beautiful picture that made us decide to use Lotus as our inspiration. When I started to look back at our collections and thought about what made them iconic, I noticed it was all about the silhouette. You see a wing and a fan. The forms are very recognisable; people understand what they are. So, we worked with something that people would understand immediately. The Lotus pieces have a very recognisable shape. We played around with different settings we hadn’t done before in a collection. On Wings, we used a lot of calibre cut stones. In Fanfare, we used a thread and grain setting. For Lotus, I wanted to use a castle setting, which has very minimal metal – it’s all about the stones with a beautiful ombre colour that goes from dark shades to light tones.

WHEN TIME MEETS INNOVATION

During the Doha Jewellery and Watches Exhibition, OHLALA had the opportunity to speak once again with David Tedeschi, Hublot’s Managing Director for Middle East, Africa and Latin America. He explains why 2025 is a special year for the brand.

OHLALA – Last time we spoke, you were Hublot’s Regional Director, and now you hold the position of Managing Director of Hublot Middle East, Africa and Latin America. What has changed in your role in the company?

David Tedeschi – Operation-wise and on a day-to-day basis, it’s not a big difference. At the end of the day, it’s just an update of the title. But I would say that what really changed was the level of empowerment in decisionmaking. Because when you are Managing Director, you can sign bigger budgets, you can make decisions on your own without getting approval from HQ and so on. I would say that you have more power in decisionmaking, which is something that is quite appreciable. I am celebrating 17 years at Hublot, so it’s great to hold this position now.

OHLALA – What is your take on 2024 for Hublot?

David – We call 2024 the year of normalisation because we believe that 2021, 2022 and 2023 were really abnormal compared to the reality and the size of the business. I would say that overall, we are very happy with the performance of the brand in the region. But 2024 was a difficult year, I believe, for the whole luxury industry scene and not only the watchmaking industry, but we’re ready to bounce back in 2025 and bring some positive things. And 2025 is a very important year for the brand because we’re celebrating the 20th anniversary of our Big Bang Collection, which is our most iconic line. It is a very important collection for us, a pillar of our brand.

OHLALA – In our last conversation, you mentioned that you wanted to focus more on highlighting the brand’s expertise in movement innovation. How has this approach been carried out?

David – We want to be seen on the watchmaking scene as an innovative brand. I believe that we have demonstrated this quite well with our approach to tailoring and creating new materials that didn’t exist before. But also, in terms of innovation of movement, this year we’re coming with the new Meca-10 movement. It’s really important for us to work on new movements, but it takes time. For us, it takes us at least two years to come up with a new movement because we have all the conception phase of the movement, but after we have all the validation, the homologation and the testing of the movement, then we want to make sure that before putting something on the market, the movement cannot have any problems, no hiccups. We just launched the Big Bang Meca-10, but other exciting creations will also be launched throughout the year.

OHLALA – You joined the Hublot team in 2008. Can you briefly tell us what is the major difference you see between then and now?

David – When I joined the brand in 2008, I started one month before LVMH purchased Hublot. So obviously, during the first years of Hublot under LVMH, there was an adaptation time; now, we are fully integrated into the LVMH group and into its operation. So, it’s amazing to see the difference between what we used to be before and what we are now with the support of the group. It has created opportunities that maybe Hublot wouldn’t have without being part of LVMH. When I started at Hublot, we were 41 employees. Today, we have over a thousand employees worldwide and more than doubled the size of our production. I also believe that our philosophy is completely different from the other watch brands; we are a big family, and we work as a family. I think this is also why we are quite agile and flexible in doing things and successful in doing that, of course.

OHLALA – Who is the Hublot customer?

David – Someone that is like Hublot, that doesn’t do things like everyone else, that has their own spirit and philosophy, that can be quite

provocative sometimes as well. People who are bold, unique and know what they want. This is what we like about our customers; they align with the brand’s values. And the particularity of our Middle Eastern customers is that the share of sales is almost equal between men and women. We are very strong with women, which could be surprising because we are always perceived as a men’s brand; we are not a jewellery brand, let’s say. I believe we know how to tease them and make them thrive for our products. For instance, in December 2024, we launched a dedicated ladies’ collection with a set of natural pearls from Qatar. The pearls come from the lifetime collection of the Al Majed family and are sold exclusively to the Al Majed distribution network.

OHLALA – Which is your favourite Hublot watch?

David – From the actual collection or that we ever produced? Because these are two different things. My favourite Hublot watch ever is the King Power Unico. It was the first all-black watch version we launched with our Unico Manufacture movement. This was in 2011, and I remember the year clearly because previously, I used to be on the technical side at Hublot, and I was part of the team working on the development of the Unico movement. This is why this watch is particularly dear to me. And from the actual collection, I would say that the one that I really love is not a watch that you would think is a Hublot at first sight, but when you look at it closely, you understand that it is. It’s the MP10 that we launched last year at the LVMH Watch Week in Miami. It has a very innovative movement with a very particular type of winding, a recharging system with a linear oscillating weight instead of having a rotative one like most watches. I fell in love with that watch the day we launched it. Unfortunately, it’s sold out. I couldn’t get one for me.

OHLALA – What is the highlight for 2025?

David – The Big Bang Anniversary Collection, which will be launched during Watches & Wonders Geneva this year. It’s going to be the focus of our communication this year to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Big Bang.

@hublot @almajedjw

DAVID TEDESCHI

OHLALA – You were born in the jewellery and watches universe. What fascinates you most in this field? And if not working with jewellery, what else would you see yourself doing?

Noor Alfardan – I’ve been fascinated by this field since I was a little girl. I just love jewellery. It was something that I always admired. I love the sparkle of diamonds, all the different types of stones and the idea of designing something and having it come to life. I loved going to exhibitions and trade shows, being surrounded by all these incredible brands that Alfardan Jewellery carries in Qatar, and seeing what the world’s top designers would come up with. For me, that was like the fashionista’s Fashion Week.

I have to say that I was very, very lucky to be born in this universe. I think if I weren’t a jewellery designer, I would be a jewellery designer’s personal assistant. There’s no getting me out of this field. I would be in this field no matter what. The jewellery industry is a very intimate field; it’s a very family-orientated area. People who work in certain brands go through family generations, and a lot of them are intertwined. People move from one brand to another. So everyone really knows each other. And I think once you’re in this industry, it isn’t easy to get out of it. It’s almost impossible to see yourself doing something other than that.

Flawless Designs Meet Heritage

During the Doha Jewellery and Watches Exhibition (DJWE) 2025, OHLALA had the opportunity to speak with Noor Alfardan, founder of Noudar Jewellery. She talks about her career and her unique brand.

OHLALA – When did you start Noudar? What made you create it?

Noor – Noudar is 12 years old now. I started the brand one year before I had my twin boys, so technically, Noudar was my first baby. Seeing the brand grow has been really wonderful for me. We started in a little stall here at the exhibition. We launched a small collection with only 15 designs. Today, we have this wonderful stall at DJWE, with many lines and varieties within those lines. We had to expand our capabilities in the workshop, and I am really proud of what we have achieved over the years. I started Noudar because I was always creating. I used to design for other brands and single pieces for myself. So, it was just a progression of my interest. Being able to design for my own brand gave me full creative control. It was like unleashing a child in a candy shop; it’s been an incredible journey.

OHLALA – What is Noudar’s best-selling collection?

Noor – Our bestseller is the Henna Collection. Noudar’s essence is based on tradition and heritage, which are reflected in unique contemporary pieces. Henna is important in our Qatari culture. It is usually performed at ceremonial events like weddings, and what I did was to turn it into diamonds. This collection is perfect for those who want to wear henna

NOOR ALFARDAN
“It’s essential for me not to forget our traditions and to take a piece of that tradition with us.”
– Noor Alfardan, founder of Noudar Jewellery.

in a more practical way, with the same effect, but with the advantage of taking it off afterwards. The whole point is to have traditional jewellery that is easy to incorporate into the modern day. And for me, that is something significant. It’s essential for me not to forget our traditions and to take a piece of that tradition with us. And I just feel really proud when I see people wearing it, understanding the concept, and appreciating it. I’m also really happy to see Western people wearing it and incorporating it into their own style. They usually ask me if it is inspired by tattoos, and then I explain the story to them; they absolutely love the idea.

OHLALA – What part of working on a new collection do you find most interesting?

Noor – I love everything about it. I love the idea coming to my mind, then putting it on paper and sending it to the workshop. In the drawing phase, I need to make sure it’s visually the way I envisioned it, and I have to keep in mind that it has to work. Sometimes, I have something on my mind, but then when it’s on the paper, I realise, oh no, that’s not going to work. It needs to work mechanically on the body part where it will be worn. But I guess I have an absolute favourite: when it comes out of the workshop. There are many steps before, but the surprise and feeling of seeing the pieces ready is amazing.

OHLALA – What metals and gems do you work with? What’s your favourite?

Noor – I love diamonds, and you can see a lot of them in my collections. They are the hardest element on the planet, and I feel like you can draw a lot of strength from them, so there is also an energy aspect – the same with emeralds. Emeralds are quite healing, so once again, there is an energy aspect involved. I also

like rubies and sapphires, and I enjoy working with them. One of the elements we work a lot with, which I was recommended not to, but of course, I did, is using black rhodium and black diamonds. I was told not to because this was not common in the Middle East. Henna is traditionally showcased in brown and black, so it made sense for me to use brown and black diamonds. In order to use black diamonds and for them to stand out against the skin, they had to be set in black rhodium. So you can truly see the person’s skin behind it. The collection did well and is still one of my favourite pieces.

OHLALA – What, in your opinion, gives people a deep appreciation for jewels?

Noor – I think the fact that it’s a piece of the earth that you can take with you makes this connection strong. There’s a romantic side to that, and that’s why I think that lab-grown diamonds don’t have that same appeal to people.

OHLALA – Do you have a special piece that you wear all the time?

Noor – Yes, I have a piece that I always wear on my hand, the Shafika’s handpiece, named after my mum.

OHLALA – As an expert in the field, what is a timeless jewellery piece?

Noor – I believe that there is a difference between a timeless style and an investment piece. As an investment piece, you should go for the tennis bracelet or the solitaire. A timeless style is something unique to you as a person. I wouldn’t go for something overly trendy or a certain fad, but I would go for something you see yourself continuously wearing that resonates with you and your aesthetic, not anyone else’s.

A VERY FRENCH POUT

The latest chapter in Celine Beauté unfolds with Le Rouge Celine, a collection of 14 new lipsticks.

Celine Beauté expands its presence in the world of luxury cosmetics with the recent launch of Le Rouge Celine, a sophisticated collection of 14 new lipstick shades. This follows the brand’s initial foray into beauty with the debut of Rouge Triomphe lipstick last October. Designed by Hedi Slimane, this range continues the maison’s commitment to promoting the French idea of femininity and elegance.

Each lipstick provides a satin finish with long-wearing radiance and hydration. The formula, enriched with natural-origin ingredients such as squalane, sunflower wax, rice wax and beeswax, aligns with the clean beauty ethos combined with high-performance results. Adding to its sensory appeal, the collection is infused with a nostalgic rose and rice powder fragrance, a signature olfactory note reminiscent of Celine’s haute parfumerie line.

Encased in a gold metal sheath, the lipsticks reflect Hedi’s fascination with 18th-century French classicism and Art Deco modernism. The case, embossed with the Triomphe monogram, is designed to be refillable, ensuring longevity as both a cosmetic and an object of design. A black velvet protective pouch accompanies each piece, reinforcing its status as a collector’s item.

The shade range varies from classic reds, including Le 16 and Dans Paris, for the quintessential French look, to neutrals such as Rose Céleste and La Peau Nue, which are perfect for any time or season. For those drawn to bold colours, Nightclubbing delivers a dramatic deep purple and Orange Cléa channels the vibrancy of the ‘70s with a luminous orange hue, among others. Each season, Celine Beauté will continue expanding into other cosmetic essentials, such as lip balms, mascaras, eyeliners, blushes and nail polishes.

SLEEPING BEAUTY

We all know a deep rest is essential, yet it’s often the first thing we sacrifice. Bushra Hakim explores how to sleep better and unlock the benefits.

We’ve all heard of beauty sleep, but do we really take it seriously? Studies show that we’re shutting our eyes as needed far less than we did 50 years ago and it’s taking a toll on our physical and mental health. Whether it’s late-night scrolling, 24/7 hustle culture or the ever-growing demands of modern life, chronic sleep deprivation is on the rise. We have unknowingly pushed rest to the backseat, leaving many of us running on empty. But skimping on sleep isn’t just making us tired; it’s also making us look and feel worse. A lack of proper slumber is linked to premature ageing, weakened immunity and increased stress levels. So, if you want to reap its benefits, prioritising rest is key.

BENEFITS OF A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP

Brighter Skin and Fewer Wrinkles: While you snooze, your body repairs itself and produces more collagen, keeping your skin plump and youthful. Chronic sleep deprivation can accelerate ageing, making fine lines and wrinkles more prominent.

Reduced Puffiness and Dark Circles: A good night’s slumber ensures proper fluid balance, preventing puffiness and those dreaded panda eyes. Poor resting restricts circulation, leading to dark circles that no amount of concealer can fully cover.

Better Hair Health: Your body needs to shut off to synthesise proteins and release growth hormones, both essential for maintaining strong, shiny locks. When you don’t catch enough Zs, your body struggles to repair and regenerate, which can lead to increased hair fall and dullness.

Boosted Immunity: Have you ever noticed that you’re more likely to fall ill after a few nights of poor sleep? That’s because rest strengthens your immune system, helping your body fight off illnesses and infections. Long-term deprivation has even been linked to a higher risk of chronic conditions such as heart disease and diabetes.

Improved Mood and Mental Well-being: A well-rested mind is a happier mind. Sleep regulates serotonin and dopamine levels, making you feel more positive and less anxious. On the other hand, its deprivation can lead to irritability, mood swings and even symptoms of depression.

Better Weight Management: Studies have shown that lack of shut-eye disrupts hunger hormones, making you crave high-calorie foods and increasing your chances of overeating. If you’re struggling with weight management, maybe it’s time to check when you hit the hay.

HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR Zzzz

Buy Good Quality Bedding: Your mattress and pillows play a huge role in sleep quality. If your bed isn’t comfortable, falling and staying asleep can be a struggle. Choose supportive pillows, breathable bedding and a mattress best suited to your sleep position.

Keep the Bed for Sleeping Only: If you spend too much time in bed scrolling on your phone, working or watching TV, your brain stops associating it with sleep. Try to reserve your bed strictly for rest so that when you lie down, your body knows it’s time to sleep.

Get Out in 20 Minutes: Tossing and turning? If you can’t sleep in 20 minutes, don’t force yourself. Instead, get up and do something calming like reading or stretching, then return to bed when you feel sleepy. This also helps prevent your brain from linking your bed with wakefulness. Create a Sleep-Inducing Environment: Keep your bedroom dark, cool and quiet. Invest in blackout curtains or use an eye mask and avoid blue light exposure from screens at least an hour or two before bed.

Stick to a Sleep Schedule: Going to bed and waking up at the same time daily regulates your body’s internal clock, making it easier to fall and stay asleep. Even on weekends, try not to stray too far from your routine.

Limit Caffeine and Heavy Meals Before Bed: That late-night coffee or sugary treat might be keeping you awake longer than you realise. Try to avoid caffeine a couple of hours before bedtime, as its effects take time to wear off. Opt for calming herbal teas like chamomile, peppermint or valerian root instead. If you’re hungry before bed, go for a light snack with protein and healthy fats.

Try Aromatherapy: Essential oils like lavender, sandalwood and chamomile have been proven to promote relaxation and improve sleep quality. Using a diffuser or applying a drop of oil to your pillow can work wonders.

Exercise Regularly: Physical activity helps regulate sleep patterns, but working out too close to bedtime can leave you feeling wired. Try to finish intense workouts at least three hours before you plan to sleep.

Get Plenty of Sunlight: Natural light exposure, especially in the morning, helps regulate your circadian rhythm, making it easier to fall asleep at night. Spend some time outdoors daily or sit by a window while having your morning coffee.

Fix a Nightly Ritual: Whether it’s a warm bath, reading a book, journalling or practising deep breathing, a relaxing bedtime routine signals your body that it’s time to wind down.

BOUNTIFUL TRESSES

Caring for her mane is Fernanda Langhammer’s mission. She headed to GLAMbar for a hair recovery treatment.

Haircare is something that many of us tend to leave for tomorrow, and tomorrow never comes. I have to confess that I am a bit like that. I do colour my roots and make sure my greys are well hidden, but that’s basically it. I know my hair is in a poor state and paying some attention to it would do wonders for my locks. So, when I was invited to try the Bond Angel hair treatment from BRAÉ at GLAMbar Beauty Lounge, I couldn’t have been more excited.

BRAÉ is a Brazilian brand that works with enzymatic complexes crafted by scientists from Brazil and the USA. This South American country is well-known for its beauty expertise and I was looking forward to testing the treatment. Mediha, the brand ambassador of BRAÉ in Qatar, was in the salon during my visit and explained that the brand only works with natural ingredients and the products do not change the hair texture –nothing to do with the infamous Brazilian straightening treatments. I told her I was very proud of my curls, and she assured me that the BRAÉ treatment they chose would only improve my natural texture.

The Bond Angel line is designed to protect and multiply the disulfide bridges in the hair fibres. As you may know, our hair is composed of keratin which is held together by disulfide bonds. These bridges give your hair its straight or curly characteristics. Developed with a keratin complex and hydrolyzed collagen, the product aids in repairing broken bridges and creates a protective film. This line aims to safeguard the tresses from the negative impact of various chemicals and help you achieve a platinumblond look, for example, without the usual damage and breakage. My hair is curly and bleached, so I guess I was the perfect candidate to try it.

With all the information I needed, Samah, my hair stylist, started the treatment, which was composed of three steps. This treatment is for salons only, but you can purchase a homecare kit to extend its results. The first step, after a good wash, was the application of Bond Maker, which works as a chemical protector. She left it in my hair for a short time then rinsed the product off without shampooing. I then sat in the chair where she applied the second step, the Bond Reconstructor, which acts as a post-chemical re-builder. The product is used with a fine comb from roots to ends and left in the hair for about 20 minutes. Meanwhile, I got a relaxing foot massage that was exactly what I needed after spending the previous two days walking in high heels at the Doha Jewellery and Watches Exhibition – Thank you so much for the lovely touch, GLAMbar.

The final step was the Bond Fortifier. Its unique formulation protects the hair from external aggressions on a daily basis, and the active ingredients in a concentrated dosage help maintain the beneficial effects of the professional Bond Angel system offered in the salon. It is also the key product for your home care kit. After waiting around 10 minutes, Samah washed my hair and finished with a leave-in. We opted not to style it and let it air dry, which was the best option after bathing my tresses in so much goodness.

I have to say that it was already super soft to the touch when wet and after it dried, it looked luscious and the curls were well defined. The smell was also divine. In the following days, my hair felt nourished without the usual frizz and the fibres looked healthier than ever. If you are looking for a treatment that delivers a wonderful result after the first application, you should pay a visit to GLAMbar!

REJUVENATION FROM HEAD TO TOE

Full-body care is what Fernanda Langhammer experienced at Lamara Spa, a contemporary yet idyllic wellness destination.

You know what I absolutely love? When I go for a pampering session and it’s so much more than I expected. I have to say that I do try amazing treatments every month and I am a very lucky girl that this is part of my job, but sometimes they go beyond amazing – that’s what I can say about my journey at Lamara Spa at InterContinental Doha The City.

The property is well-located and gives a wonderful urban vibe. After passing through the revolving door, I was guided to the elevator that would take me all the way to the 46th floor, where Lamara Spa is located. The view of West Bay was breathtaking.

The place is cosy and more like a boutique spa with four treatment rooms, a sauna and a steam room. It is painted in a beautiful forest green shade with earthy tones and golden accents. The lovely Inna, the Spa and Recreation Manager, welcomed me and we chatted about beauty, products and treatments. She is an expert on the subject, and I enjoyed the opportunity to ask all my questions. I was there for a Balinese massage and a facial. After checking my skin, Inna recommended the Cryo Age Defend therapy, adding the Ultimate Gold Mask.

Lamara Spa offers a facial therapy collection that combines the expertise of the French skincare brand Anne Semonin with made-to-measure techniques that aim to transform your face’s contours. Every facial includes an exclusive Anne Semonin lymphatic massage, designed to gently release toxins from the dermal tissues, increasing blood flow and resulting in radiant skin.

The Cryo Age Defend aims to withstand the ageing process by using essential oils and minerals that are gently massaged into the skin, improving tone and elasticity. The products contain extracts of Mexican Wild Yam and vitamins A and E, which provide the ultimate defence against environmental elements and maintain a youthful radiance.

Inna introduced me to Sonam, my therapist for the day, and she took me to my treatment room, where I found a very tranquil environment and a comfy and warm massage bed in the centre. She asked me to change into a robe for the 60-minute Balinese massage. Sonam is soft-spoken and extremely polite; her sweet way gave me a sense of pure relaxation and confidence. She used lavender oil to perform a full-body, deep-tissue treatment. The technique uses a combination of gentle stretches, acupressure, reflexology and aromatherapy to stimulate blood and oxygen flow. Her touch was precise, as if she knew each muscle in my body, and I was impressed that an arm massage could be something memorable – the way she pressed the right points on my arms showcased her skills. My upper back is where I store all my tension, and she gave extra attention to this area with patience, without hurrying and working on my knots with firm strokes that helped release the constant pain I have in that area. In the end, I felt like a ton of weight was removed from my shoulders.

I was glad that after this amazing massage, it was time to take care of my face. Sonam asked me to turn and, after making sure I was comfortable, she started cleansing my complexion with Oligo Cleansing Gel to purify and detoxify, followed by the Marine Toner, which she applied after every step of the facial to help equalise the PH of my skin. The Exfoliating Mask was next; made with red algae and rice powder, it had a very light texture.

She performed some rhythmic movements to help remove impurities and dead cells and stimulate cellular renewal. It was time to apply the Ultimate Gold Radiance Peel-Off Mask. The thick liquid was spread all over my face, and we waited for it to dry; meanwhile, I had a scalp massage. When the product dried, Sonam peeled it off and applied Anne Semonin’s Express Radiance ice cube. Combining the benefits of cold cryotherapy with a natural serum, the aim is to give a firming effect while reducing signs of ageing and fatigue. It had a nice feel to the skin, like a refreshing film. She then used the Super Active Serum to moisturise and tone, and Tissue Serum for firming and lifting. She finished with the Extreme Comfort Cream. I have to say that facials are my favourite spa therapy. My face was radiant and glowing, and it looked like all the tiredness and dullness were washed away.

After my treatment, I felt renewed, inside and out. However, before saying goodbye to the incredible team at Lamara Spa, I sat for a warm cup of tea and talked once again to Inna; this time, the subject was my wonderful experience and my wish to visit again soon. Looking for an escape where you will feel cared for from head to toe with a personalised session? You don’t have to look any further.

DEMURE,VERY VERY MINDFUL

Dressing up in a respectful way is everyone’s goal this month. We’ve rounded up our favourite pieces from the Ramadan and Eid collections out there. Check them out!

Ramadan is a period of reflection that Muslims observe with humility and diligence. However, people from all corners of the globe living in this part of the world also use this moment to be more aware of their surroundings and practice acts of kindness. After living in the Middle East for some time, we all learn how to appreciate this period of modesty and humbleness to connect with ourselves and others.

As fashion is a subject that’s always on our radar, we have noticed that each year, more and more brands have been creating capsules for Ramadan and Eid celebrations.

High-end, international names (but also streetwear labels) and regional brands have been dedicating lines for this time of the year as they have noticed the potential and demand for this kind of style. Locals and expats search for ways to embrace this moment with stylish pieces. Modest yet interesting and innovative, the collections bring flowy fabrics, loose silhouettes and colours that go from vivid blue to muted tones.

We selected a few pieces we believe could help you compose elegant and appropriate looks to enjoy Iftars, Ghabgas and Suhours – there are lots of gatherings happening in this period, which is also all about spending time with family and friends.

DRESS TO EXPRESS

Maxi dresses are the ultimate pick for your Ramadan and Eid nights. From sophisticated numbers with intricate embroidery to solid pieces with interesting details or flowy elements, they are an easy way to create an effortless outfit.

Only for Fashionistas: Wear your midi dress with wide-legged trousers for out-of-the-box styling. CH Carolina Herrera shows us how.

OVER THE LEGS

Maxi skirts are a summer trend that can easily be incorporated into your modest wardrobe. Invest in them and have a few pieces to rotate during the entire season.

eye-catching detail that adds a twist to plain tops, just like this Zimmermann shirt.

This pleated skirt from Zimmermann is great for keeping the loose silhouette with interesting movement.

Add Dimension: This pleated skirt from Zimmermann is great for keeping the loose silhouette with interesting movement.

ON THE LOOSE

Wide tops with long sleeves in beige and pearly shades are a great way to compose classy everyday looks.

Go for a very pale blue, almost greyish in tone like in this Loewe dress.

BY THE SKY

The typical Ramadan go-to colours are dark green and red with golden accents, but blue is the shade to choose this year. From light hues to bright tones, embrace the sky’s palette to

COVER-UP STARS

Kimonos, robes, open kaftans and tunics are in the spotlight. Even if you wear your everyday clothes like jeans and a tee, throw-overs are the perfect way to keep it low-key with the advantage of adding a dressy touch to your casual outfit.

TRADITIONAL STYLE

Kaftans are customarily worn during this period. This tunic style usually has wide sleeves, a V-neck and a very loose silhouette. They are not so ethnic this time round, so invest in solid pieces for timeless outfits.

Avant-Garde Touch: We are loving ballerina shades and this Zimmermann piece is spot-on!

Go Beyond: Look for a unique waist detail as in this Tom Ford number.

Twinning Goals: Go for matching shoes. These from Manolo Blahnik come with a striking buckle detail.

LET IT SHINE

Metallic handbags are the on-trend carriers to complement your Ramadan and Eid looks. In soft pink, gold and silver, they add a focal point with a mix of femininity and bold attitude.

A REFINED OASIS

Looking for a weekend escape, AMS headed to Alwadi Hotel Doha – MGallery Collection for a moment of relaxation and delightful food.

Walking into Alwadi Hotel Doha – MGallery Collection, we immediately felt like we were in an oasis of calm. The high ceilings of the lobby, bathed in natural light, created an immediate sense of ease. There are plush seatings in muted tones, inviting guests to relax. A grand staircase curved gracefully upwards, leading to more secluded spaces, while to the side, intimate seating areas provided a place for quiet conversations. We were greeted with Arabic coffee as the concierge took care of our bags and the other formalities. After a swift and smooth check in, we were soon led towards the lifts and up to the 15th floor, eager to see our home for the next few days.

A ROOM WITH A VIEW

The moment we stepped inside our room, we were met with an atmosphere of tranquillity. The centrepiece, of course, was the grand bed, dressed in crisp white linens and framed by a mustard leather headboard. Beyond the bed, a seating area by the window with an uninterrupted view of the Corniche, the Arabian Gulf stretching into the horizon. Below, the streets of Msheireb bustled with life amidst elegant new buildings. A well-placed desk nestled against a warm wooden wall added a touch of practicality to the room without interrupting its peaceful atmosphere.

UNWINDING IN STYLE

First up was a visit to the Infinity Rooftop area, where we settled into plush seats and sipped on mocktails as the sun set. The elevated vantage point made Doha’s skyline even more dramatic. It was a chilly evening, but the staff thoughtfully provided blankets to keep us warm, with strategically placed fires creating a cosy atmosphere.

Dinner that evening was a lively affair as we made our way to O’Glacée Restaurant for its Thursday night Mexican-themed brunch. It was a vibrant, flavour-packed feast – nachos and guacamole prepared fresh, soft burritos brimming with seasoned fillings and tender chicken tortillas that melted in the mouth. Sides of buffalo wings and loaded fries provided a satisfying contrast, each bite rich, indulgent and perfectly spiced. The atmosphere was casual but buzzing with energy. The addition of the smiling duo, who sang Latin hits, made it the perfect way to settle into our stay.

WELLNESS AND INDULGENCE

The next morning, we started the day at Le Colonial’s breakfast buffet, which had something for every craving – fresh fruits, pastries and cookedto-order eggs, all beautifully presented. For those seeking a hearty start, there was an extensive selection of cold cuts and cheeses alongside a full English breakfast spread featuring chicken sausages, baked beans, sautéed mushrooms and crispy hash browns. A cereal station offered a variety of choices, from granola to classic cornflakes, with fresh and dried fruits to sprinkle on top. And the list went on – fluffy pancakes, honey-drizzled waffles and a selection of yoghurts ensured there was something for every palate. It was a feast of options, all served with the signature warmth and attentiveness of the staff.

After a huge breakfast, it was time to burn off some of those calories. The well-appointed fitness centre featured Life Fitness resistance machines, a full rack of dumbbells and an array of cardio equipment. Large windows framed sweeping views of Msheireb, adding a sense of openness to the space. It was a refreshing way to wake up, energising us for the day ahead.

By lunchtime, we were back at Le Colonial for its renowned weekend family brunch. The seafood paella stood out for its depth of flavour, packed with fresh ingredients that spoke of careful preparation. The chicken biryani was just as impressive, each grain of rice infused with aromatic spices, while the roast beef and creamy mashed potatoes melted apart at the mere touch of a fork. A dedicated tortilla station allowed guests to customise their creations,

while a separate pasta station added an interactive element. The dessert spread was equally impressive – soft ice cream for the younger guests and a decadent selection of cheesecakes, matcha rolls and delicate pastries for those with more refined tastes. Our server, Hnin, was a joy – warm, friendly and always on hand to ensure we had everything we needed.

Later in the afternoon, we ventured out for a stroll around Msheireb, exploring its pedestrian-friendly streets and stylish boutiques. Upon our return, it was time for an experience we had been eagerly anticipating – a couple’s massage at M|Spa.

The session began with a personalised questionnaire, ensuring that our preferences and any areas of concern were addressed. Once inside the dimly lit treatment room, the atmosphere shifted to pure tranquillity – soft, meditative music played in the background and the faint scent of essential oils filled the air. The treatment started with a warm foot cleanse, a ritual that instantly set the tone for relaxation. As we lay back, the hot oil and hot stone massage worked its way from our feet upwards, soothing tension and relieving stress with perfectly applied pressure. The combination of heat and expert technique left us feeling completely rejuvenated.

AN EVENING OF ELEGANCE

Dinner at Cila was a perfect finale to the day. We started with the signature mezze selection, featuring five small dishes accompanied by warm, freshly baked bread. Each bite was delicate yet packed with flavour, a wonderful introduction to the main course. The Manti with lamb arrived in a rich, spiced tomato sauce, the delicate dumplings encasing tender, slow-cooked meat. A drizzle of tangy yoghurt and a sprinkle of sumac added depth, balancing the dish beautifully. Alongside, the Potato Harra delivered a welcome contrast – crispy cubes of spiced potatoes tossed with coriander, garlic and chilli, offering a subtle heat that lingered pleasantly. The lamb chops that followed were nothing short of exceptional – succulent,

perfectly cooked and seasoned to perfection, served with tender asparagus and earthy sautéed mushrooms that enhanced the dish’s richness. Ending on a sweet note, we indulged in house-made ice cream, a simple yet refined way to complete the meal. The service was impeccable, with staff ensuring we felt truly spoilt.

On our final morning, we opted for an in-room breakfast, enjoying our meal in the comfort of our accommodation. The spread was as delightful as expected – eggs on avocado toast atop crisp sourdough, a vibrant platter of fresh fruit, fluffy pancakes drizzled with maple syrup and rich, aromatic coffee. It was a leisurely, slow-paced way to start the day.

Before check out, we made time for the afternoon tea, a refined and indulgent experience. The freshly baked scones, served with clotted cream and jam, were a standout, while the delicate sandwiches – filled with salmon, turkey and falafel – added a savoury balance. The matcha roll once again proved to be a favourite among the pastries, it was just right paired with a cup of English breakfast tea.

A STAY TO REMEMBER

Our time at Alwadi Hotel Doha – MGallery Collection was a seamless blend of luxury, relaxation and exceptional service. From the elegant surroundings and thoughtfully designed rooms to the diverse dining experiences and indulgent spa treatments, every element worked in harmony to create a truly memorable stay. Whether enjoying panoramic views over Doha, savouring world-class cuisine or unwinding in the spa, the experience was defined by comfort and attentiveness. We will definitely be back.

There’s something about spring that feels like a collective sigh of relief. The days grow longer, the temperatures hit that perfect sweet spot, and the world bursts into life with a kaleidoscope of colour. But for true flower enthusiasts, it isn’t just about the changing of season – it’s about admiring blooms across the globe. These flower meadows aren’t just beautiful sights; they’re experiences that awaken the senses. If you’ve ever imagined standing in the heart of nature’s finest creations, here’s your guide to some of the most spectacular floral destinations around the world.

TULIPS IN THE NETHERLANDS

No springtime flower pilgrimage would be complete without a visit to the Netherlands, the undisputed tulip capital of the world. From mid-March to mid-May, the Dutch countryside transforms into a mesmerising sea of colour, with fields stretching endlessly in shades of red, yellow, pink and purple. The most famous spot to witness this floral phenomenon is Keukenhof Gardens, often dubbed the Garden of Europe. Located just a short drive from Amsterdam, Keukenhof boasts more than seven million tulips in bloom each spring. The meticulously designed displays, paired

with serene ponds and charming windmills, create an almost dreamlike setting. For a more immersive experience, rent a bicycle and explore the tulip fields around Lisse and Noordwijk. Pedalling along quiet country roads, with vivid tulips on either side, feels like cycling through a painting. Early mornings or late afternoons present the best light for photography and a quieter, more intimate experience.

CHERRY BLOSSOMS IN JAPAN

Few natural events are celebrated as passionately as Japan’s cherry blossom season. Known as sakura, these delicate pink and white blooms symbolise renewal and the fleeting nature of life. From late March to early April, the entire country turns into a floral wonderland, with locals and tourists alike partaking in hanami (flower-viewing) picnics under the blossoms. Tokyo and Kyoto are two of the most popular destinations for the spectacle. In Tokyo, head to Ueno Park, Shinjuku Gyoen or the Meguro River, where thousands of trees line the waterway, creating a stunning tunnel of blossoms. In Kyoto, the Philosopher’s Path and Maruyama Park offer equally enchanting displays. For a more serene experience, venture to Mount Yoshino in Nara Prefecture. With over 30,000 cherry trees blanketing the mountainside, it’s like stepping into a fairytale. As the sun sets, many parks illuminate the blossoms, adding a touch of magic to the experience.

SUNFLOWERS IN ITALY

Tuscany is often associated with rolling vineyards and historic hilltop towns, but it also hosts one of the most cheerful spring sights: vast meadows of sunflowers. Though they typically peak in summer, early blooms can often be spotted in late spring, particularly in the southern parts of the region. The Val d’Orcia region, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is one of the best places to see these golden giants. Picture-perfect landscapes of undulating hills, cypress-lined roads and medieval villages are made even more enchanting when carpeted with bright yellow sunflowers. Driving through the countryside brings plenty of photo opportunities, but for a more leisurely experience, consider staying in an agriturismo (a traditional farmhouse), where you can wake up to sunflower-filled views right outside your window. Pair the experience with Tuscany’s world-renowned food and grape, and you have the perfect springtime escape.

POPPIES IN BELGIUM

While poppies are often associated with summer, Belgium’s springtime countryside sees an early burst of these lively red blossoms. The Flanders region, known for its historical significance during World War I, also happens to be one of the most picturesque places to see poppies in bloom. The fields around Ypres, in particular, come alive with scarlet flowers, creating a bold contrast against the lush green countryside. This area’s historical significance adds an emotional depth to the experience, with the delicate poppies serving as a poignant reminder of resilience and remembrance. Combine your floral journey with a visit to the nearby In Flanders Fields Museum, which provides context to the historical symbolism of the poppy while celebrating the region’s natural beauty.

LUPINES IN ICELAND

Iceland might not be the first place that comes to mind when thinking of vernal blooms, but its lupine fields tell a different story. From late May to early July, Iceland’s rough landscapes are softened by vast stretches of purple and blue lupines, creating an otherworldly scene. Reykjavík’s outskirts and the South Coast are prime spots for lupine viewing. The fields near Skógafoss waterfall and around Vík, with the contrast of purple blooms against black volcanic sand, look particularly striking. Interestingly, these lupines are not native to Iceland; they were introduced in the mid-20th century to combat soil erosion. Though they’ve stirred some ecological debate, there’s no denying the sheer beauty they add to the Icelandic springtime scenery.

ORANGE BLOSSOMS IN SPAIN

Spring in Seville is more than just a visual treat, it’s a sensory experience. From late March to early May, the city’s streets and courtyards are filled with the intoxicating scent of orange blossoms, known locally as azahar. Wander through the historic neighbourhoods of Santa Cruz and Triana, where the delicate white flowers adorn the orange trees lining the streets. The Alcázar Gardens and Maria Luisa Park are particularly enchanting during bloom season, with pockets of tranquillity amidst the city. Beyond their beauty, orange blossoms hold cultural significance in Andalusia, often symbolising good fortune and love. Stop by a local market to find products made from the fragrant blooms, such as oils and perfumes; a perfect souvenir from this unforgettable escape.

FINE DINING WITH

INDIAN FLAVOURS

Embarking on a memorable meal, SD tells us all about her dining experience at Jamavar Doha.

Being one of only two Michelin-starred restaurants in Qatar, Jamavar brings its legacy from London, to the shores of Doha and has made a name for itself in the local fine dining scene. Located in the iconic Sheraton Grand Doha Resort & Convention Hotel, this acclaimed restaurant is our choice for tonight – to savour its flavours, experience its ambience and discover why this is one of Doha’s best restaurants.

We arrive and are greeted by the staff, and escorted to our table, right in the centre of one of two dining areas.

We immediately notice how striking the space is, reminiscent of a membersonly style diner in one of India’s large metro cities. The colonial interiors beautifully blend with contemporary elegance. It feels almost as if we’re dining in a room in the presidential palace from decades ago. This would be the perfect movie set!

There is an incredible amount of detail and seamless integration between large pieces of décor and subtle motifs, brought together in a warm ambience. There is understated luxury everywhere you look – from the Lutyen-inspired chandeliers to the mirror and glass work on the walls.

Stylish nods to colonial India engulf the space and, despite the intricacies, nothing is overbearing. Everything just makes sense.

Jamavar is a type of intricate Kashmiri motif, and the restaurant has been aptly named. Beautiful frames of Jamavar designs are placed around the venue.

The rattan chairs, a very traditional Indian style, feature a twist of sophistication with leather cushions on top.

The menu boasts a rich tapestry of flavours from the mountainous regions of the north to the coasts of the south. Today, we’re going with the tasting menu.

Chef Surender Mohan is a powerhouse of talent and that’s clearly reflected in this upscale menu. He passes by our table and greets us – a humble man who lets his culinary artistry speak for itself.

Our hostess Lisa is well spoken, knowledgeable and goes into the details of every dish before placing it on our table. She brings some pappadum with four impressive chutneys – the best one being a smoked red pepper variant. While we’re indulging in India’s favourite snack, we’re served with some Mango Lassi (a yoghurt based beverage) served in rose gold copper cups. Stunning.

After a round of local-themed mocktails, all with grand presentations, our first course arrives – a Lobster Idly Sambhar. Any Indian food afficionado recognises this classic breakfast dish from South India, a staple diet for many. Chef Surender has reimagined it with an elevated lobster version, but what’s really interesting is that every component of this dish retains its authentic flavour. The coconut chutney tastes like home, and the sambhar (a spiced sauce with thin consistency) is as traditional as it gets.

The Tulsi Chicken Tikka arrives next and we immediately dig in. The heat in this chicken is not for the weak. This isn’t a crowd-pleaser. You have to really appreciate the Indian green chilli to love this basil-marinated chicken breast. Luckily, it’s served with a pickled radish and cumin yoghurt that helps dial down the heat.

The next course is served – Raan-E-Jamavar. It is as regal as it sounds. The Indian lamb leg is fall-apart tender and the signature spice blend really lifts it up. The gold leaf on top is testament to how luxurious this dish is. A side of sprout salad adds some crunch, but this Raan is magnificent on its own.

The mains are served together (with individual portions for each of us) and we taste the Tempered Lentils before anything else. If we’re to go by this dish alone, a truly superior experience awaits. It’s perfectly spicy and tangy, served in a beautiful, small copper bowl.

A vegetable preparation – Aloo Til Til Ka – sits in the centre, generously doused with sesame seeds and chilli flakes. The pairing with the daal is just perfect.

The Murgh Nihari – a delicious chicken curry – is everything you’d expect from an Indian gravy, and more. The spices really stand out and, despite having tried over a hundred variants of curry, there is something very unique in the flavours. We dip our garlic butter naans and relish it.

A Chicken Biryani is part of the mains. Who are we to refuse one of India’s signature foods, even though we’re near our intake capacity? As Lisa serves us, the whiff of aromatic biryani spices takes over.

Everything is going well until we have our first spoon of Leela’s Lobster Neeruli. The Omani lobster is well spiced and stewed in a coconut milk gravy. Our entire experience has just gone up a notch, this is an absolutely brilliant dish – the coastal flavours are really standout, the lobster is perfectly cooked and the spices feel nostalgic yet unique. The coconut and seafood are a stellar combo – mildly spicy with an indulgent creaminess and the perfect level of acidity to cut through. We pair it with a flawless, flaky Laccha Paratha – an ideal one is hard to perfect, but Jamavar knows exactly what it’s doing. This dish is addictive, we can’t stop eating it and, quite frankly, we’ve never tasted anything like it. If there’s just one dish to go back to Jamavar for, it’s Leela’s Lobster Neeruli.

The dessert course sounds simple but is rather complex in its flavours and presentation. We have just about enough space for it. Four pieces of Saffron Jalebi made with gram flour sit atop some milky Rabdi – a crunchy, sweet ending. The pistachio crumbles and almond slivers on top add an extra dimension of subtle flavour and more crunch. Alongside is a portion of Mango Rasmalai, a luxurious, tropical twist on a classic milkbased dessert, originating from the Bengal region in India. Now, it’s hard to explain the ingredients, but imagine a soft, spongy, creamy, indulgent (we can go on...) bite in a dense Mango Shrikhand sauce. The dehydrated raspberry bits and blueberry jelly on top really bring the dish together, adding a fruity balance to the milky textures.

This dinner easily sits in our top five fine-dining experiences in Doha list. It’s hardly a surprise that Jamavar has earned a Michelin star – tonight’s experience makes it abundantly clear why. With impeccable service, masterfully crafted dishes that really do not compromise on traditional flavours and exquisite presentation, it has nailed the art of fine dining.

AN ORIGINAL REBORN

OHLALA GOT BEHIND THE WHEEL OF THE NEW MINI COOPER S, A FUN, FAST AND FABULOUS MOTOR CAR.

How can one not get excited when getting behind the wheel of a brand-new MINI Cooper? This month, OHLALA was fortunate enough to experience the latest release. The encounter left us even more infatuated with this iconic brand.

REFRESHED EXTERIOR

Laying eyes on the new MINI Cooper S was like seeing a long-lost love who had gotten better looking over time. Although the familiar shape of the MINI we have all come to appreciate over the years was still obvious, the improvements to the exterior have given it a more mature posture.

We found the brand’s ‘less is more’ approach to design clearly reflected in the sleek lines, clean surfaces and balanced proportions of the 2025 model.

From head-on, the captivating presence is defined by several features. These include its octagonal front grille, short overhangs and round adaptive LED headlights. Not only has BMW ensured the latest MINI model comes with powerful LED technology as standard, but it also offers optional cornering lights delivering improved side visibility. There are three different light signatures for owners to choose from.

No matter the angle from which we viewed this three-door, we found it an agile-looking compact car with a modern personality.

At the sides, we appreciated the posh alloy wheels, constructed from recycled aluminium to reduce both weight and carbon footprint.

At the rear, we liked the prominent new triangular taillights that give an additional dose of distinctive charisma. Interestingly, no visible exhaust pipe is present on the 2025 model.

CLASSY INTERIOR

Once inside the Cooper S, the modern yet familiar cabin captivated our interest. This 2025 model houses a minimalistic interior that combines clear forms with surprisingly generous space, along with a new central instrument. The fit and feel of the fabric, knitted in a unique 2D technique, proved first-class. We also loved the design of the chunky steering wheel with a stylish fabric strap replacing the third spoke.

From the supportive and comfortable front seating, we were struck by the large central OLED display, situated where the rev counter of the older models used to sit. This distinctive 240mm display is the first circular OLED display in the world and is made from high-quality glass. It serves as both instrument cluster and onboard infotainment and assistance hub.

As the Cooper S includes no gear lever, there is instead a large storage space including a pair of sizeable cup holders. Our favourite feature of this section was the small area for a smartphone, complete with an elastic belt that keeps the device pressed against the charging mat. A generously sized glove box adds to the cockpit’s convenience.

“No matter the angle from which we viewed this threedoor, we found it an agilelooking compact car with a modern personality.”

We loved the little ways in which the interior design paid homage to the original MINIs. This is best displayed through the inclusion of the starter switch panel. Reminiscent of the original design, this small section now comprises five intuitive controls for the most important driving functions. These include a small key-like starter switch, volume control, experiences, drive select and the handbrake. Everything else can be controlled through the OLED display.

Space-wise, there was ample room in the cockpit, as well as plenty for two six-footers in the rear. The 210-litre boot also offered more space than expected, fitting a large luggage bag comfortably. This area can be effortlessly increased to 725 litres by folding down the 60-40 split rear seating.

UPDATED TECH & INFOTAINMENT

Although we loved the exterior and interior designs, it was the in-car tech that really shone.

The previously mentioned OLED display pushes MINI to the forefront of forward-thinking mechanisation. By combining all vehicle information, this outstanding control system provides access to convenient operating functions for the driver and all occupants. We could also select between two visualisations. We took our time going through the new MINI operating System 9, which was intuitive and easy to operate. Using the unique OLED display and voicecontrolled MINI Intelligent Personal Assist, we found occupants now have more control, connectivity and personalisation options than in previous models. By simply saying ‘Hey MINI’ or by pushing the talk button on the steering wheel, we could activate the new voice assistant enabling us to

operate the navigation, make phone calls, control the temperature, access journey information or just have a chat. Brilliant.

In addition, the OLED display offers a brand-new innovation in the form of in-car gaming. MINI, AirConsole and Mattel, Inc., have collaborated with UNO, the beloved card game, allowing stationary drivers to invite any passenger to a UNO Car Party via the infotainment system. We spent an hour or so taking advantage of this new inclusion and can report it to be very entertaining – a fantastic inclusion for the kids.

The 2025 MINI’s range of free intelligent connectivity features can be upgraded at any time. They are also kept up-to-date via free, over-the-air software updates.

SUPERB RIDE QUALITY

One of MINI's many claims to fame is its go-kart-feel driving capabilities. The new MINI Cooper S did not let us down in this area, and we spent a substantial portion of the day taking it through its paces.

Although the familiar feel of fun and freedom was certainly present on our test drive, we must add that the Cooper S seems to be a grown-up version compared to previous MINI models. The drivability has been polished, perhaps via the mindset of its BMW creators.

The 204hp, four-cylinder twin-power turbo engine achieves a torque of 230Nm and can accelerate from 0-100km/h in a respectable 6.6 seconds. When combining a quick-shifting gearbox with direct steering and a precisely coordinated suspension and damping system, we experienced nothing less than premium British small car, agile handling.

We were impressed by how effectively the car ironed out any bumps on the road, as well as the responsive steering and effective braking. These ensured we had full control over the vehicle at all times.

Thanks to the window design, the visibility of our surroundings was clear, with the side mirrors greatly increasing our peripheral vision. The standard head-up display also ensured we could always keep eyes on the road ahead. Lastly, we found MINI Navigation to be extremely helpful. It assisted us with 3D visualisation and augmented views. It also provided up-to-theminute information on traffic conditions and even offered information on free parking spaces.

Safety-wise, we appreciated the camera and radar-based assistance functions. These included steering assistance and lane-keeping functionality when required. We were able to handle the stop-and-go situations confidently due to the inclusion of automatic speed and distance management.

OUR VERDICT

Whether focusing on exterior or interior designs, in-car tech or driveability, the new MINI Cooper S does not disappoint.

NEW MONTH, NEW DRAMA

The fashion industry is in flux, and Miss Ohlala is here to fill you in on all the latest exits, arrivals and trends shaking things up.

We're barely three months into the year, and the fashion world already feels like it's in the middle of a game of musical chairs. From the creative directors' exits to rumours, it seems like no brand is standing still. With so much movement already, it's safe to say 2025 is shaping up to be one of fashion's most unpredictable years yet.

The biggest shock? Kim Jones is officially stepping down from his role at Dior. And if the whispers are true, Maria Grazia Chiuri might be next. This has, of course, sparked wild speculation – could John Galliano really make a return to Dior? The thought alone is enough to send fashion fans into a frenzy, but for now, it's all just hearsay.

Meanwhile, over at Gucci, Sabato De Sarno has announced his departure after a brief but bold tenure. While his quiet luxury approach received mixed reviews, it's clear the brand is once again on the hunt for a new vision. Who will step into the iconic house next? Your guess is as good as mine.

And here's a final update on the ever-changing creative positions: A$AP Rocky has been named RayBan's first-ever Creative Director. His debut Blacked Out Collection, dropping this April, reworks the brand's Mega frames, marking a new chapter for Ray-Ban's creative platform.

While the industry leans into quiet luxury, cuteness isn't getting left behind either. Coach's latest runway featured fluffy bunny slippers, Loewe introduced animal-themed accessories, and Bottega Veneta's Summer 2025 collection showcased animalshaped bean bag chairs. Playful pieces are clearly in, proving even the most minimalist wardrobes crave a little whimsy.
