Spring is Here!

“Sweet April showers do bring May flowers.” –Thomas Tusser

Spring has finally sprung, bringing with it that unpredictable weather we all know and love. And just like the world outside, our May issue is bursting with new life and energy…

Much like our events calendar, our pages are jam packed with exciting things to do this month. On top of our list is the legendary rock band, Scorpions, as they grace our shores on May 20, and funny man, Jo Koy, who’ll also be performing live at Al Dana Amphitheatre on May 24 – so, don't miss out!

Starting with Market Street, a brand-new space supporting local artisans, there's something for everyone on the social scene this month. From tribute acts galore and a chance to sign up for a new touring car series at BIC to a film-making workshop and even an Awakening Breathwork event for charity.

In true undercover fashion, our lead story, Hidden Gems, has taken us on a journey across the island to uncover some fantastic secret places that you may not have heard of, from farms and food trucks to music and hobby stores. Enjoy and thank us later! We were really spoilt this month with our foodie endeavours. Our culinary expeditions took us from Bahrain's first Tuscan eatery, Sapori Di Toscana Le Domain, to ÖDN, a swanky new restaurant in Adliya. We also tried Amber Nights at The RitzCarlton, Bahrain for a taste of authentic Arabic cuisine, and the exquisite new menu at The Merchant House’s Indigo Terrace restaurant. The rest of our dining pages are bursting at the seams with the hottest offers, from enticing brunches and afternoon teas to sizzling steak nights.

This month in Island Rides, we feature the 2024 Mercedes AMG GT 43. Check out what we thought of this four-door coupe as we put it through its paces. The rest of our motoring pages hold more exciting local and regional news, as well as a service review for an innovative paint protection treatment.

If you haven't yet planned your summer travel, then take a look at our sustainable travel feature to get inspired. For those of you planning a staycation, read all about the impressive new Raffles Al Areen Palace Bahrain. As always, we also bring you the latest in fashion trends, beauty and entertainment. So, buckle up and get ready for an exciting ride through our pages this month.

Enjoy the read!

Bye for now…

SHOP LOCAL

A haven for all things local, Market Street, a brand-new space supporting homegrown artists, crafters and designers, have opened their doors in Bahrain.

Offering a solution to the transient nature of popup markets in Bahrain, the newly opened Market Street is providing a permanent venue for local vendors to showcase their products.

Located in Umm Al Hassam, behind the British Club and in front of Manama Auctions, Market Street is a repurposed old villa that has been transformed into a hub for crafters. Currently accommodating 60 vendors, with room for more, the market boasts a diverse range of products, including jewellery, abayas, candles, soaps, gemstones, kurtas, fire pits, socks and crocs, hand-painted lampshades, skincare products, artwork and paintings, gift baskets, pet treats, pet clothes, cutting and serving boards and much more.

More than just a marketplace, Market Street aims to create a space where local artisans can collaborate and foster a sense of community. The market also encourages shoppers to support local businesses, which in turn benefits the community. The venue hosts regular events, including workshops and gatherings in their outdoor garden area. In just a short time since opening, Market Street have already seen success with their initial events, attracting significant interest and footfall.

“I created this space to give the local artists a place to be seen,” said Market Street Founder Bradley Cox. “Sure, we all take part in the regular pop-up markets but the artists can be easily dismissed as soon as people leave the market. This venue gives those artists a place to be seen and a voice as a collective. It also gives the public a place to shop locally on a regular and consistent basis. If you need to do some shopping, why not buy from someone in your community? We hope that this establishment will be a permanent fixture in the Bahrain community for vendors and patrons alike. We always say, shop local Bahrain.”

Market Street is open from Wednesday to Sunday, from 10am to 6pm. Their upcoming event, May Fest Pop-Up, to be held on May 3, from 6pm to 10pm, will feature 95 plus vendors. So, grab your baskets, shop to your heart’s content and support your favourite local. ✤

ANCIENT TREATMENTS IN MODERN LUXURY

Immerse yourself in the tranquillity of Ayurveda with new treatments at Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay, blending 5,000 years of wisdom with luxury hospitality.

Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay has introduced Ayurvedic treatments, becoming the Kingdom’s first five-star hotel to offer therapies rooted in this ancient Indian well-being system. Ayurveda, known as the world's oldest healing approach, aims to balance body, mind, spirit and social well-being for optimal health.

The Spa at Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay now offers three new Ayurvedic treatments, each performed by specially trained therapists. Shirodhara, involves a relaxing shoulder massage followed by a gentle pour of warm herbal oil over the forehead. It helps to alleviate insomnia, calm the mind, soothe the senses and bring total equilibrium. "In Ayurvedic treatments many facets come together to impact our health in profound ways," said Director of

Spa, Nikolay Dimitrov. "Through the introduction of these three classic treatments, we hope to encourage a deeper exploration of this fascinating well-being approach, which ultimately teaches us how to balance the different energies in our body in relation to the world around us."

Calling all racers, BIC and The Bahrain Motor Federation, represented by The Circuit Racing Commission of Bahrain (CRC), announce the introduction of a new touring car race series, set to debut later this year.

Building on the success of the popular 2,000cc Challenge, which has been a staple of the Kingdom’s racing scene for 16 seasons, the new championship will allow greater flexibility in cars eligible to enter, making it easier for new contestants to join the grid, while also helping to reduce costs for drivers. With the aim of supporting broader participation in local racing at all levels, both novices and experienced drivers are encouraged to take part.

All those interested in participating in the new championship are invited to register online at Bahraingp.com. Registered drivers will have the opportunity to attend a series of open days, workshops and seminars designed to prepare them for the upcoming season. These events are devised to help drivers understand the new rules and regulations for the series and support with sourcing and development of

cars, as well as provide insights into securing sponsorship and other financial backing.

Open days will provide drivers with the chance to test out the types of cars that can be used in the new championship at BIC’s track. Local experts will also be on hand to provide guidance and support to drivers taking their first steps into racing.

Presenting exciting learning and development opportunities for motorsport enthusiasts in Bahrain, the launch of this new touring car series aims to provide inclusivity, lower the financial barriers to entry, as well as help support and educate novice racers who are looking to gain their first experience in track racing.

Preliminary registration of interest is now open for drivers for the 2024/5 season. ✤

POWER MEETS LUXURY

FACT put the 2024 Mercedes AMG GT 43 through its paces on Bahrain's roads, showcasing its remarkable blend of high standards, coupled with innovation and functionality.

• ISLAND RIDES
ISLAND RIDES •

Mercedes-Benz is one of the most recognised and sought-after car brands in the world, and for good reason. Over the decades they have constantly been at the forefront of innovation and functionality while still maintaining an outstanding standard for craftsmanship and luxury. This month, thanks to the team at Al Haddad Motors, we were privileged enough to get behind the wheel of the 2024 Mercedes AMG GT 43 four-door coupe which boasts a 3.0L inline-six turbo engine with hybrid assist.

Dynamic Exterior Design

The moment the GT 43 came into view we were immediately captivated by its effortless sense of luxury and refinement. Coloured in a stunning Spectral Blue Metallic, the vehicle’s bold design language from bonnet to boot left an indelible impression. At the front end, the eyes are drawn to the beautifully sculpted bonnet and the large AMG-specific radiator grille exhibiting the esteemed Mercedes-Benz three-point star emblem sitting proudly at its centre, stylishly framed by slim Intelligent Multibeam LED front headlights.

Turning our gaze to the flanks, the sleek yet powerful proportions are highlighted by the sloping roofline which is a defining characteristic of the AMG GT 43’s dynamic look. The sides are underscored by the robust shoulders and the notable 20-inch AMG multi-spoke, light-alloy wheels that hint at the model’s performance capabilities.

At the rear, full-length wraparound LED taillights feature a distinctive edge-lit outline and illuminate in a pleasing fashion. Stealthily laying flush in the trunk lid is the retractable rear spoiler which can assume five different angles to optimise downforce or minimise drag depending on the driving situation. Finally, twin dual exhaust tips coated in chrome wrap up the external design elements in style.

Luxurious Interior

Once inside, the premium nature of the AMG GT 43 was fully revealed. We were welcomed by sculptured and ultracomfortable AMG performance front seating with integrated headrests, increased lateral support and racing-inspired brightred seat belts. Upholstered in premium leather, the seats gave us the perfect vantage point from which to appreciate the fine-detailing of the cabin of which there were many instances, such as the highly responsive four-way power adjustable seats, AMG Performance steering wheel in Nappa leather, open-pore wood trim, leather upholstery, soft-touch finishes, 64-colour LED ambient lighting and more. Additionally, the performance steering wheel has contoured side grips, a flat-bottom design and aluminium AMG shift paddles. If that wasn’t enough, it also boasts the Mercedes-Benz AMG Drive Unit located on the steering wheel that can efficiently control different performance functions, such as drive mode, rear spoiler and exhaust. Also, with the touch of a button, the tinted glass sunroof tilts up at the rear for ventilation or slides open for a breezy view of the sky. There is plenty of head, shoulder and leg room for the front seats, as well as for those in the rear. Storage-wise, the luggage compartment has a capacity of 456 litres.

High-End Infotainment & Technology

Since the gear selector is situated beside the steering wheel, the space between the front seats has been efficiently used for a large V-shaped console with high-tech controls that support advanced performance. It houses a touchpad controller that operates the in-dash central touchscreen as you rest your hands comfortably at your side. The touchpad includes multitouch gestures such as swiping through menus, pinching to zoom and mainly the dedicated Back, Skip and Home virtual keys, that were handy when driving. Additionally, eight touchpad switches with integrated colour readouts offer individual control of the threestage Electronic Stability Program (ESP), shifting, suspension, exhaust, Eco Start/Stop and active rear spoiler. The centre console handily flows into the lower section of the instrument panel. Then there’s the dual 12.3-inch displays that include a central multimedia touchscreen and a reconfigurable instrument cluster in front of the driver. Both displays feature clear graphics, texts and are satisfactorily user friendly and super responsive. This setup also includes voice recognition thanks to the MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) infotainment system that’s very intuitive to use and capable of learning. It offers extensive AMG-specific content in five display styles, as well as exclusive menu items such as AMG Performance or AMG Track Pace that underlines the AMG GT 43’s sporty character. It is also compatible with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. A 14-speaker, high-end Burmester surround-sound system, that looks stunning with its detailed aluminium speaker grilles, is among the array of additional high-end features we discovered.

Imposing Power & Performance

As you would expect, our favourite part of this experience was when we took the AMG GT 43 out on the road and put it through its paces. The seamless power and natural balance of the robust 3.0-litre, inline-six-cylinder engine with hybrid assist manages to capably produce 367hp and 500Nm of torque. This setup, coupled with the AMG Speedshift TCT nine-speed transmission,

meant the AMG GT 43 could surge from 0-100km/h in around five seconds and can produce a top speed of 270km/h. As we switched from Comfort, to Sport and then to Sport+ driving modes, the model effortlessly showed off its highly responsive and refined driving performance that put a smile on our faces. Also, we must highlight that the cornering and braking capabilities were second to none and we always felt in complete control throughout our drive.

Our Verdict

Offering excellent day-to-day practicality in the four-door configuration, the AMG GT 43 smoothly provides an exceptionally upscale and luxury focused experience, be it while accessing its advanced features or while cruising through the city. ✤

PREMIUM PROTECTION FOR YOUR CAR

Experience LLumar’s exclusive Valor Paint Protection Film treatment, as FACT takes you through the ultimate car protection journey

SERVICE REVIEW •

As car enthusiasts, the heartbreak of seeing your vehicle endure wear and tear from daily use is all too familiar. With scratches, paint chips, stains and sun damage not only dulling the shine but also diminishing the value of your prized possession, wouldn’t it be great if there was something you could do to keep these issues at bay and your car feeling and looking spanking new? Fear not, FACT has discovered the solution to these very real challenges. Join us as we take you into the world of LLumar, available in the Kingdom through Ebrahim K. Kanoo, and experience first-hand how their exceptional team members work their magic to protect and preserve your car, keeping it looking its best for years to come.

Architectural Films Experts

LLumar are renowned for their extensive range of high-end services specially tailored to keep your car in pristine condition. These include exceptional auto detailing, protection films and structural protection treatments. In other words, if you want to make sure your car is properly protected, LLumar is the company to contact.

Everyday Challenges

Imagine you've just purchased your dream car, your pride and joy, only to find it scratched by a stray shopping trolley or its paint chipped by debris on our high-speed highways. Watching your car's finish fade under the harsh Bahraini sun is equally disheartening. These scenarios not only cause heartache and

fact magazine 46
• SERVICE REVIEW

inconvenience but also fall heavy on the wallet when it comes to repair costs and value depreciation.

This is where LLumar’s Valor Paint Protection Film (PPF) comes into play, a game-changer in car protection and also a sound investment.

Based on LLumar’s stellar reputation, internationally recognised certifications and our previous five-star experiences with them, we were confident that their skilled team would deliver top-notch results, as they went to work on damage proofing one of our larger vehicles with the sought-after LLumar Valor PPF.

The Ultimate Shield

So, what exactly is Valor PPF? In simple terms, it is a US manufactured premium paint protection film that not only shields your car's exterior but also provides a ceramic-style finish, all in a single product. It offers 25% more environmental resistance than standard PPF.

The magic doesn’t stop there! The new and improved topcoat of LLumar Valor enhances glossiness, repelling dirt and water –practically cleaning itself (a process called hydrophobicity which achieves less water and dust build up, particularly relevant in our environment) – so your car stays cleaner for longer.

Amazingly, this special layer even self-heals surface scratches using sun or engine heat, protecting against rocks and road debris and adding to the treatment's endurance and durability.

The precise and meticulous application of the Valor PPF takes around four to five days but the results, boasting a smooth, clear high-gloss finish that’s resistant to even environmental damage such as bird droppings, tree sap and acid rain, are well worth the wait. Adding further value to LLumar’s

service is the manufacturer’s 12-year warranty, a sure sign of the company’s unwavering confidence in their product and commitment to quality.

The Process

First your vehicle will receive a comprehensive clean to remove any dirt and oil build up, in fact it will probably be cleaner than at any time since leaving the factory. This is followed by a wipe down with a special solution to remove any residual contaminants such as brake and metal dust and industrial pollutants, as it’s essential the PPF is applied on the cleanest surface possible. Then, the crowning glory, the film is applied in a meticulous process to ensure that highly desirable, glossy finish that not only looks great but promises your vehicle outstanding protection with a 12-year warranty.

Our Findings

Since applying the Valor PPF treatment, we can already see a huge difference. Our car not only looks better, with its new smooth ultra-shine gloss, but also feels more protected. The car’s clear finish is pristine and we've noticed a significant reduction in bodywork damage. We've been so impressed with LLumar that we’re already planning to have our other cars serviced with this revolutionary treatment. ✤

Garmin launches new heart rate monitor made for women.

Fitness trackers have seamlessly become part of our everyday lives. In most cases, wrist-based devices are plenty useful and do a satisfactory job, but fall short when it comes to accurate heart rate tracking compared to dedicated devices. Addressing that issue is the Garmin HRM-Fit, a new heart rate monitor developed specifically for women.

Designed paying special attention to comfort alongside functionality, the device features a unique clip-on design that’s been optimised to fit with medium and high-support sports bras. Precisely tracking one’s heart beats per minute lets users correctly gauge their effort level during exercise, which then allows them to adjust training parameters and stay on top of stress levels.

The HRM-Fit accurately captures real-time heart rate and training data for a variety of activities, including running, indoor and outdoor cycling, strength training, HIIT (highintensity interval training) and many others.

Users can effectively track the way they move and in turn understand their bodies better. The device transmits the heart rate and performance data via Bluetooth direct to compatible devices and apps – such as Garmin smartwatches, Edge cycling

computers, the Tacx Training app and more.

In situations where users happen to take off or not wear their compatible smartwatch, the HRM-Fit captures steps, calories burnt, intensity minutes and all-day heart rate. It conveniently stores all the workout data and updates all compatible Garmin devices via the Garmin Connect smartphone app. ✤

SMOKE INDOORS!

Enjoy mouth-watering barbecue preparations at home with GE Profile’s first-of-its-kind indoor smart smoker.

The cooking method of smoking food is thoroughly enjoyed by many. Unfortunately, the preparation process is far from easy when taking into consideration the specific equipment, sufficient space and the huge time commitment it requires.

Bringing a novel solution to the table is the new GE Profile Smart Indoor Smoker. Effectively combining innovative technology and countertop convenience, the appliance provides a revolutionary way to experience the joys of smoking food by simplifying the arduous cooking process.

To achieve taste profiles on par with traditional contraptions, this gadget generates that familiar smoky flavour using wood pellets that circulate the smoke throughout the inside of the smoker. Its pioneering Active Smoke Filtration technology keeps the smoke inside the unit and not in the kitchen.

Easy to use for a novice as well as a seasoned professional, users can dial in the smoke intensity and temperature independently as there are two separate heat sources for burning pellets and cooking foods.

The unit features five adjustable smoke settings that lets users control the smoke levels until they find their ideal spot. There are six preset food settings that help achieve optimal results when cooking brisket, chicken wings, chicken breast, salmon and more.

To ensure consistent results, users can also set their desired smoke levels and monitor the cooking progress from anywhere by using the SmartHQ app.

The sleek looking Indoor Smoker has a small footprint but a large capacity and its removable racks and drip trays are also dishwasher safe. ✤

…In Conversation with Moustafa Abou Bakr

The artist and Interior Designer at Gulf House Engineering, talks about his design process, his signature art style and his favourite project in the Kingdom.

fact magazine 60
• 5 OVER 5

What inspired you to pursue a career in interior design and how did your journey lead you to your current role?

My main talent since childhood was drawing and painting and my mother being an art teacher inspired me to study art and decoration. So, I joined the College of Fine Arts, Department of Decoration and studied for five years. I graduated with a very good grade with honours, as the first in my class in college. This gave me many good job opportunities and a chance to develop from working for small companies to one of the largest in the Gulf region.

What do you consider your signature style and what is your design process for any new project?

The style of mixing modern with classic touches (post-modern style). There are two types of projects: public and private. For both, I first start with a study and research the users of the spaces and ideas that inspire me for design that is in line with the clients’ requirements. Secondly, I draw the ideas manually in general, without details, setting the basic design points and organising the work according to importance. The final stage is creating threedimensional designs, working drawings and selecting materials, furniture and accessories. For the private projects I have one more step; I do a questionnaire for my clients to know more about them, their memories, future plans and dreams, so I can be more aware of what they want and need in the project, be it a flat or villa, etc.

What has been your most memorable project so far and what made it special?

I was on one of the design teams for the new Bahrain National Assembly building. It’s a special project for the Kingdom that is under construction. It will be a great landmark that will stay for generations, so I was glad to be a part of it.

You're also an artist and hold art classes. What is your medium and your most popular workshop?

I like acrylic colours because the materials give me the oil painting effect but I mix it with water, so it doesn’t take time to dry. I hold academic painting workshops, where I like to teach artists the key skills and principles in art. I take them through some of the most well-known art styles and guide them towards choosing one they like the most.

If you could collaborate with any artist, designer or architect, living or deceased, who would it be and what type of project would you create together?

The architect I would choose would be Sir Norman Foster, where I would work as an interior designer on one of his amazing creative projects. As for the artist, I would love to be a part of the Italian Renaissance era and work with Michelangelo on one of his interior wall paintings. ✤

ISLAND INSIDER

Michael Mounir

Director of Sales and Distribution, The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain

What qualities are essential for success in a director role such as yours in the luxury hospitality industry?

Adaptability is crucial for success, particularly in an increasingly unpredictable world. Leaders must embrace an adaptive leadership style, embodying empathy, open-mindedness, accountability, flexibility and creativity. This entails the ability to adjust leadership approaches according to the circumstances. At times, leaders must lead from the front, setting an example. In other instances, leading from alongside the team fosters unity. Additionally, leading from

the back involves mentoring and coaching, allowing team members to take the lead and receive deserved recognition.

What are the most challenging and the most enjoyable parts of your job?

Working in hospitality is more like show business; you are always on stage, which adds a lot of excitement and enjoyment to the role. However, this constant visibility also brings stress, requiring intense focus and adaptability to swiftly adjust your strategies and approach in response to evolving demands or audience preferences.

How many years have you been in Bahrain and what makes living here special?

I've had the privilege of residing in the Kingdom for the past eight years, cherishing every moment. I often recount living in Bahrain with the same sentiment I express when representing my hotel and the Kingdom at international travel shows – it's the warmth and hospitality of the Bahraini people. Their welcoming nature, coupled with a spirit of peace and coexistence, creates a unique atmosphere that embraces everyone, from the country's leaders and citizens to expatriates like me.

FLAVOURS WITHOUT BORDERS

Boasting an illustrious career spanning more than two decades, Victor Zanotti, Executive Chef at Reef Boutique Hotel, talks all things food – from his mixed culinary heritage and menu creations to making an appearance on live TV!

fact magazine 64
• VOICE FROM THE KITCHEN

You've travelled all over the world with your career. Which country or cuisine has had the most influence on your cooking style?

My cuisine has Italian roots; I grew up on a farm in the north of Italy. The cuisine there is different but very tasty. The basis of Italian food has helped me a lot in my career. Honestly, I had many influences travelling around the world. The Asian continent has inspired me greatly but South American cuisine, which is also in my blood having been born in Peru in Lima, has recently become part of my culinary portfolio.

Since joining Reef Boutique Hotel last year, can you describe your approach to menu development and creation of new dishes?

It is my first time in Bahrain and the Middle East. I started creating menus for Reef Boutique Hotel in October. My team and I were inspired by international cuisine, from local to South American, Asian and Mediterranean. We try to use local produce as much as possible, trying to safeguard the environment, which has always been a very important point in all my creations over the last 10 years.

You've been on Discovery Channel's Food Network. How was the experience showcasing your talent on live TV?

The television experience was a lot of fun. Certainly, doing it in the middle of the Indian Ocean on a two-kilometre island was very complicated – the temperatures and the sun gave us a hard time because the products melted and deteriorated very quickly. But thanks to Manuele Baiocchini and his team, we made it. We recorded two 30-minute episodes in four days under the scorching sun of the Maldives and even managed to make a ravioli! In the future, we would like to do it in fantastic Bahrain too.

What is your signature dish at Reef Boutique Hotel and the inspiration behind it?

We have designed two dishes, which we will soon launch in two of the new outlets at Reef Boutique Hotel.

Lomo Saltado, which takes me back to my South American origins in Peru, with a small touch of Nikkei cuisine (Peruvian-Japanese fusion cuisine), served with vegetables, purple potatoes and Jasmine rice.

Another latest creation is a pizza. Let's say that it is not a typical Neapolitan dough. It is more like a Roman pinsa but much thinner. It is served with salmon, mixed salad, stracciatella cheese, confit cherry tomatoes and a green olive sauce. ✤

AN ARABIAN INDULGENCE

• DINING DELIGHT
An exceptional celebration of Arab cuisine was thoroughly enjoyed by Lawson Misquitta at La Med’s Amber Night.
DINING DELIGHT •

Stepping into The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain’s main lobby, it’s not hard to get swept up in the grandness of the space, there’s a reason this establishment has been a longstanding icon for luxury and hospitality in the Kingdom, and it certainly shows. However, this particular evening my reason for visiting was a bit more deliberate.

A few days prior my colleagues and I were made privy to the latest culinary spectacle taking place at one of the hotel’s many stunning dining destinations and, being ever enthusiastic and curious about new happenings, we had to come see for ourselves.

Inspired by the captivating aromas and flavours of the Arabian Peninsula, La Med is hosting an enticing culinary extravaganza called Amber Night that takes place every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

On entering La Med, my colleague and I we were warmly received by the front-of-house staff and directed to our table. Calming shades of white and blue, reminiscent of the turquoise waters of the Gulf not too far away, gracefully coloured the interiors of the restaurant in a classy, yet cosy manner.

Once settled, we wasted no more time and made our way to the amazing buffet. I kicked off my gastronomic journey with some fresh and lemony tabbouleh alongside some hummus and moutable from the vibrant spread of salads and mezze. I then tried the lamb kibbeh, spinach fatayer and vegetable samosa accompanied with a dollop of piquant muhammara – a fantastic preparation of roasted red peppers, walnuts, breadcrumbs, chilli flakes and pomegranate molasses – that proved to be the ideal dip.

While returning to our table I bumped into the person responsible for this delectable spread, Chef de Cuisine Hanan Osman. Very

gracious and extremely passionate about the food prepared for the evening, she courteously guided me through the incredible banquet herself and delightfully made recommendations for dishes I had to try without fail.

For the next round, we stepped out into La Med’s wonderful outdoor dining area that overlooks the hotel’s sprawling pool and is also where the live cooking stations are situated. A bustling hub of activity where local favourites were prepared and served fresh off the charcoal-grill right before our eyes. We gladly took our time savouring from the wide selection of sizzling tikkas, kebabs and succulent lamb chops which were aptly marinated in Bahraini spices and grilled to lip-smacking perfection. My colleague and I couldn’t help but make repeated trips for some more of the delicious beef tikka! From this section I also thoroughly enjoyed the lamb arayes and the succulent chicken shawarma which was wrapped in freshly baked saj bread.

As we savoured the grills back at our table, the attentive staff regularly checked in for our drinks preferences (here too there were plenty of options to choose from). Also, I must mention the DJ who enlivened the mood through the night as he seamlessly played a great mix of diverse music styles and genres. Returning to indulge in yet more sumptuous preparations, I visited the chilled seafood bar which was amply stocked with shrimp, lobster tail, mussels, fresh oysters and crabs. I then moved on to the meat carving section and tried a slice of the marinated slow-cooked beef which was exceptionally tender and paired perfectly with the smooth, buttery and very flavourful saffron mashed potatoes. I also helped myself to a serving of expertly grilled hammour which I doused in some luscious lemon butter

sauce that helped truly elevate each moist and flaky bite. For my main course, I savoured each spoonful of the intensely fragrant traditional Gulf Ouzi that was patiently cooked overnight to an impeccable melt-in-your-mouth perfection. But things got even better when Chef Hanan, who is Egyptian, insisted we try her speciality the koshary. Prepared with finesse and flair, this spicy and savoury dish excellently combined lentils, rice and pasta into the most satisfying morsel. Lastly, for my final main I tried some of the chicken kofta with Iranian rice, which was another standout, thanks to the symphony of flavours it presented to my palate. Finally, no Arabian feast would be complete without a decadent array of desserts, and La Med did not disappoint. I tried the lugaimat – tiny orbs of dough that were fried to golden brown perfection in front of us and drizzled with sweet date syrup and sesame seeds. There were many other regional favourites such as Umm Ali, halawet el Jibn, qatayef with cheese, pistachio mufrukha and different styles of kunafa of which I tried a few. Additionally, there were also plenty of cakes, cheesecakes and more in the strawberry, mango and chocolate varieties. But a personal favourite of the night was the saffron milk cake – light, airy with a heady flavour of saffron, every spoonful was pure bliss!

La Med’s Amber Night is a meticulous combination of classy ambience, outstanding service and exceptional food that successfully celebrates the best and most unique aspects of this region’s cuisine, making it certainly worth the visit! ✤

A TASTE OF TUSCANY

Discover the flavours of one of Italy's most famed regions right here in Bahrain at

an exquisite dining experience.

Sapori Di Toscana Le Domain, as Apple Sharma indulges in
CULINARY SPOTLIGHT •

The Domain Hotel and Spa's newest dining outlet, Sapori Di Toscana, is the talk of the town, offering a tantalising journey into the heart of Tuscany.

Since its opening in February, it has been making waves as Bahrain's first Tuscan eatery and for its affiliation with the renowned Vetrina Toscana project that is dedicated to promoting Tuscan cuisine. Recognised as the initiative's first Tuscan restaurant abroad by government tourism agency, Toscana Promozione Turistica, this new dining spot proudly wears its heritage on its sleeve.

Naturally, we’re only too excited to see what the buzz is all about as we head to Level 34 where the restaurant is located. As soon as we enter, we’re amazed by the stunning views of the city skyline and are immediately transported to the sun-kissed hills of Tuscany, thanks to the exquisite ambience and décor. The walls painted with Tuscan landscapes, the plush cushioned chairs and the soft glow of black and turquoise ceiling lamps, create an atmosphere of warmth and elegance. Large potted olive trees and coffee-table books on Tuscany add to the cosiness.

We are greeted by the lovely Marketing Manager, Amna Yousif, the Food and Beverage Manager, Srinivas Akula and the Chef de Partie, Mandeep Rawat, who is to prepare our feast. Having trained for two years under the expert guidance of renowned Italian Chef Simona Girelli, Chef Mandeep’s expertise is evident in the authentic dishes he produces.

We take our seats by the window, with Italian melodies serenading us. A large decorative lemon and a fragrant fresh oregano plant on each table provide the perfect setting for a Tuscan culinary journey. The menu is divided into two sections – Taste of Tuscany and Taste of Italian Classics – catering to diverse palates while staying true to the restaurant’s roots. We start in traditional Tuscan style with a selection of warm bread, olive oil and balsamic vinegar and antipasti of cold and hot appetisers. The Insalata di Finocchi e Arance is a refreshing salad of fennel, oranges, strawberries, mint and toasted almonds, tossed with olive oil – a staple in Tuscan cuisine. One of my favourites, the crunchy fennel’s aniseed-like flavour marries beautifully with the sweet and sour of the fruit and the saltiness of the nuts. Equally fresh is the Insalata Colorata, a colourful layered salad featuring green and red leaves, carrot shavings, apples, pears, pecorino cheese, walnuts, olives and peppers. Served alongside avocado wedges and a crostini dressed with pesto, this salad is a symphony of tastes and textures. Next up is Carpaccio di Manzo, thinly sliced steak served with rocca leaves and parmesan. The subtle gamey flavour of the meat balances perfectly with the slight sharpness of the rocket leaves. For something more indulgent, we try the beautifully presented Sformato di Zucchine, a zucchini or courgette flan with parmesan cheese sauce, and the Vitello Tonnato, a slow-cooked veal slice served with a tuna and caper sauce. Moving on to Primi Piatti (first course), Sapori Di Toscana dazzles with its homemade pastas, prepared à la minute to offer the best taste and texture. From the rich and savoury Tortelli al Ragù di Carne to the delicate and creamy Ravioli, Ricotta e Spinaci, each dish brings out the soulful flavours of Tuscany. A must-try is the Gnocchi, pillowy soft potato dumplings served with a decadent mushroom sauce and drizzled with truffle oil.

• CULINARY SPOTLIGHT

Meanwhile, the Spaghetti Allo Scoglio, brimming with the fresh flavours of the sea, evokes the sun-drenched shores of the Tuscan coast with every bite. Another hit is the comforting Lasagna al Ragù, a classic favourite presented with layers of homemade pasta, rich beef ragù and creamy béchamel sauce. Before delving into the mains, we taste Zuppa di Farro, a hearty soup comprising farro (a type of wheat grain), beans, aromatic herbs and a drizzle of olive oil, topped with delicious fried potato shavings that lift the flavours to another level.

For Secondo Piatti (mains), Sapori Di Toscana offers a selection of dishes that exemplify the elegance of the region’s cuisine. Vitella al Latte features milk-roasted veal served with roast potatoes, sautéed spinach and a unique milk sauce. Delicately cooked, the flavourful combination of milk, rosemary, sago and garlic shines through in this dish – a triumph of simplicity and sophistication. No meal is complete without a sweet finale and the dessert menu offers a tempting array of delights. The classic Cannoli di Pasta Sfoglia Alla Crema, a decadent puff pastry shell filled with Chantilly cream, is served with fresh strawberries and one of the most delicious vanilla sauces I’ve tasted. From the classic Tiramisu, with its layers of espresso-soaked savoiardi biscuits and creamy mascarpone cheese topped with dark chocolate shards, to the Panna Cotta, a velvety smooth vanilla delight topped with a tart berry compote, each dessert is a celebration of indulgence and elegance. Live music by a pianist adds a touch of romance to every evening, while special occasions are elevated with personalised setups, complete with rose petals, candles and cakes. Whether you're looking for a romantic dinner or a family celebration, this Italian gem of an eatery promises an experience that is as memorable as it is delicious. So come, take a seat,

and let the flavours of Tuscany whisk you away on a culinary adventure unlike any other. ✤

THE ART OF DINING

Classic charm and impressive flavours were the theme of the day as Apple

ON THE MENU •
Sharma explored the venue exquisite new menu at The Merchant House’s Indigo Terrace restaurant.

Tucked away in the heart of the city is Bahrain’s best kept secret, The Merchant House. This fivestar luxury boutique hotel holds its own as one of the most elegant hospitality establishments in the capital, with art at the core of its tasteful interiors. It boasts a unique collection of contemporary art by local, regional and international artists, with stunning pieces on display throughout the property.

I love colour and the hotel’s vibrant atmosphere has plenty of it. The artistic streak that runs throughout, extends from the lobby all the way to the rooftop restaurant, Indigo Terrace, where my colleague and I escaped for a late lunch.

Stepping out of the lift, I noticed two large paintings on either side of the restaurant’s entrance, one an abstract and the other a modern interpretation of Frida Kahlo. The glass doors open into a cosy dining area, which extends out onto a terrace. During the day, sunlight floods in and brightens up the space and at dusk the venue exudes a warm ambience from the mood lighting. The eatery had a welcoming feel, with square and round tables, each with a fresh oregano plant – a lovely touch. A colourful mix of pink and green floral and blue and white striped chairs imparted a charming appeal to the entire setting – it was like walking into a garden on a lovely spring afternoon. The colourful vibes continued outside on to the garden terrace, which had a tropical feel, surrounded by lush plants and flowers. Complementing the greenery were floral-patterned sofas with pink and green cushions and cane chairs for a relaxed feel. The interior space also housed a semi-circular wooden bar at the far end with an

adjacent closed kitchen. Wooden chandeliers hung from the ceiling imparting a warm glow and the walls were adorned with more art creating a modern yet cosy ambience.

As we were taking in the surroundings and deciding where to sit, we were greeted by General Manager Riccardo Cocco, who suggested dining at a corner table with a full view of the gorgeous terrace. Chef Nirmal Pant prepared our dishes from the restaurant’s new menu and throughout our meal, Restaurant Supervisors, Igor Khrabrykh and Debaprakash Mishra, took excellent care of us explaining the dishes and serving us with a smile.

The exciting new menu has something to please every palate, from continental dishes and Asian delights to burgers and sandwiches, as well as pasta and risotto. A Seasonal Vegetable Promotion has also been introduced, which changes periodically, and features dishes accompanied with seasonal veggies as the hero. During our visit, these were broccoli, cauliflower and tomatoes.

We began our culinary journey with the Roasted Sweet & Sour Eggplant, a refreshing medley of sautéed onions and tomatoes delicately balanced with Greek yogurt. Its lightness and harmony of flavours set a delightful tone for the meal ahead.

Next, we indulged in the Seabass Spiced Tacos, a symphony of flavours and textures with zesty tomato salsa, creamy guacamole and sour cream complementing the succulent seabass – an ideal appetiser for fish lovers. The Beetroot and Buffalo Mozzarella was a standout dish. Beautifully presented, the earthy notes of roasted beets with beetroot coulis blended perfectly with the soft and creamy mozzarella, leaving us craving for more. And

fact magazine 76
• ON THE MENU

then there was the Crab Ceviche, almost too pretty to eat with its vibrant blend of dragon fruit, passion fruit and cherry tomatoes, all enhanced by a zesty yuzu sriracha dressing.

Moving on to the main courses, the Paper Baked Canadian Black Cod captivated us with its fragrant aroma and delicate taste. Paired with a flavourful cod jus and seasonal vegetables, it was a testament to the chef's skill in bringing out the best in fresh, quality ingredients. Equally impressive was the Local Crispy Hamour with Broccoli Puree and Citrus Sauce, offering a wonderful combination of flavours and textures. Part of the Seasonal Vegetable Promotion, the perfectly cooked hamour, paired with a refreshing citrus sauce and complemented by broccoli florets and puree, was a true delight.

However, it was the Braised Lamb that stole the show with its tender meat that literally fell off the bone. Served with creamy spinach polenta, Kenyan beans and a drizzle of balsamic jus, it was a true indulgence for the senses.

As a vegetarian option, the Saffron Risotto was a dream. The fragrant saffron-infused rice had the perfect consistency, along with tender asparagus and parmesan shavings, it offered a comforting and satisfying dish. The Porcini Mushroom Tortelli Pasta was another highlight, with its rich, savoury filling encased in expertly cooked pasta and accompanied by a luscious Fontina fondue and a drizzle of white truffle oil.

Wrapping up our gastronomic adventure were the divine desserts. The Summer Panna Cotta, with its vanilla-infused yogurt and refreshing orange blossom granita, was a harmonious blend of creamy and citrusy flavours and absolutely sublime. And finally, the Apple Pie, served with saffron ice cream and shaped like a rose, was a work of art. Its light, flaky crust and delicious apple filling, paired with the unexpected twist of saffron ice cream, was the perfect end to our feast.

Our dining experience at The Merchant House’s Indigo Terrace was a delightful mix of art and gourmet food. With its enticing new menu, impeccable presentation and decadent flavours, it was the ideal setting for a charming day out. ✤

BITE TO THE BEAT

One of the newest restaurants in Adliya’s swanky Block 338 is ÖDN (pronounced oh-dun). Apple Sharma headed to this hot little musical haunt for an evening of good food and great vibes.

• NEW IN TOWN
NEW IN TOWN •

In the bustling heart of Block 338's dining district lies ÖDN (Open Doors to Nostalgia), a new culinary gem and the brainchild of artist and international music producer, Walid Al Massih. Paying tribute to Beirut’s music scene of a bygone era, this classy eatery blends the intimacy of a jazz club with the laid-back charm of a pub. As we stepped into ÖDN's cosy al fresco area and made our way inside, we were welcomed by the General Manager, Marinos Dine, and Talent Lead and Public Relations Manager, Hülya Ahmed. Their genuine, warm hospitality set the tone for the evening with the entire staff following suit.

Taking in the surroundings, we could see Walid’s passion for music evident in every corner of the restaurant. ÖDN has an intimate setting featuring a small centre stage with a green curtain backdrop serving as its focal point. Purple and blue light projections on either side highlight framed photos of iconic celebrities. Black beams and metal frames run across the restaurant’s ceiling, imparting an industrial, urban chic look with clusters of spotlights and downlights illuminating the area below. The black theme continues with a striking open arched structure housing a fully stocked marble-top bar with round overhead lamps.

The décor features a green and black colour scheme with a mix of plush green velvet and yellow leather chairs providing comfortable seating. Green bar stools with gold legs add a touch of sophistication. ÖDN hosts live performances every week, such as Jazz Soirée Tuesday, a ladies’ night featuring live music by Alejandra, with more events coming soon.

As we settled in, ÖDN’s dim lighting created a warm, relaxed ambience and the crisp white tablecloths adorned with tea lights added a romantic touch. Soft jazz tunes filled the air, enhancing the laid-back vibe and setting the stage for our culinary exploration.

Led by Chef Liton Mia, the menu at ÖDN is a testament to simplicity done right, focusing on quality over quantity.

For starters, we began with the Taco Tabbouleh, Walid’s visionary creation and a nostalgic ode to Beirut. A star dish, the crispy taco shell was more like a pastry with a fresh tabbouleh filling. The mix of parsley, mint, tomato, onion and pomegranate, drizzled with lemon dressing offered a burst of flavours. Light and moreish, I could eat these all day. The Shrimpy Blast came next, delivering an explosion of tastes and textures, with juicy king prawns lightly coated in crispy tempura batter and glazed with a spicy dynamite sauce. Sinatra's Nachos featured crunchy chips combined with onions and mixed peppers, smothered in melted cheese and topped with jalapenos.

Moving on to a crowd-pleaser, the Strawberry Feta Salad offered delightful flavours with rocca leaves, feta cheese, juicy strawberries and pumpkin seeds for a crunchy texture. The dish had the perfect balance of sweetness and acidity, with the raspberry dressing deliciously sweet and tart at the same time. The Exotic Oasis salad, with its unexpected combination of ingredients, featured creamy avocados that paired perfectly with the sweetness of dates, while baby gem lettuce and walnuts added a satisfying crunch.

For mains, the beautifully presented Pan-Fried Salmon was cooked to perfection with a crispy skin, served with roast potatoes and dressed with capers. Cutting through the delicate richness of

fact magazine 80
• NEW IN TOWN

the fish, the lemon butter sauce enhanced its natural flavours.

More deliciousness followed as we opted for the vegetarian truffle version of the Fettuccine Pasta. The creamy sauce beautifully coated the silky pasta, while a medley of mushrooms, carrots, corn and broccoli provided the perfect al dente texture. The addition of truffle oil elevated it further, adding a luxurious flavour.

We also tried the Risotto Truffle, a creamy and indulgent treat. The rice had a slight bite to it and the earthy umami flavours of the mushrooms were perfectly complemented by the truffle oil.

Next up was the Beef Steak Tenderloin USA 250g. Another standout dish, the meat was cooked to medium-rare perfection and was so tender it practically melted in the mouth. Accompanied by seasonal veggies and a rich mushroom and pepper sauce, it was garnished with rosemary and served with a basket of French fries.

Rounding off the mains, the ÖDN Star Burger was an absolute favourite! The black brioche bun, made with activated charcoal, was light and had a delightful cake-like texture. The beef patty, accompanied with beef bacon, crispy oloroso lettuce and cheese, was a perfect combination with caramelised onions and pickles. Served with crispy French fries and spicy mayo, this burger was a winner in every way.

Further enhancing our dining experience, Marinos (also a grape expert) treated us to a glass of Spanish grape that paired beautifully

with our mains and a sweet concoction to go with the dessert. The Duo Chocolate Fondante, a rich dessert with a decadent gooey centre, was presented two ways – one topped with hazelnuts and the other with strawberries. Complemented by a generous portion of Madagascan vanilla ice cream, it was a perfect ending to a perfect meal.

As we bid farewell to the restaurant, its warm hospitality, intimate ambience and unforgettable dishes lingered in our memories. Whether you're a music lover or a foodie, ÖDN is sure to hit all the right notes, staying true to every bit of its motto: Where Timeless Tunes Meet Timeless Tastes! ✤

TRAVEL INTENTIONALLY

There are few things as gratifying as travelling to new places and taking the time to truly immerse yourself and experience all the unique aspects they have to offer. But concurrently, far too many of us remain blissfully oblivious to the massive impact the way we travel and our travel choices have on the environment around us.

• TRAVEL
Walking Hanging Bridge, Image by Selina Bubendorfer, Unsplash

Realistically, it falls upon us to understand the overall effects of our travel decisions and then take responsibility towards making necessary changes for the better. For that very reason, a step in the right direction has been the steady growth of sustainable travel (also called eco-tourism).

Simply put, sustainable travel is based around finding ways to carry out tourism for the long-term in a manner that creates minimal negative impact and ideally maximises the positive effects. It aims to strike a balance between satisfying visitors’ needs, while also protecting the interests of the local population and the environment.

Here are a few places that have made focused efforts towards creating a more sustainable travel experience for visitors.

Copenhagen, Denmark

Currently on track to becoming the world’s first carbon-neutral capital by 2025 is the wonderful city of Copenhagen. A contributing factor to that feat is it being one of the most bicycle-friendly cities in the world (62% of its residents commute to work and school by bike) thanks to notable investments in cycling infrastructure. Hence, it would be amiss not to hire one and head out exploring, be sure to cycle around the Havneringen (Harbour Ring). Take time to admire magnificent works of art at the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek and Statens Museum for Kunst. Then take a walk through Superkilen, an urban park that sprawls through the city’s most culturally diverse neighbourhood, Norrebro. Consider renting a solar-powered boat or join an arranged tour and experience this amazing Scandinavian city by taking in breathtaking sights around the harbour at a leisurely pace. Then get the best view of Copenhagen from the ultra-modern waste-recycling plant, Copenhill, which also boasts an artificial ski slope on the roof along with facilities for hiking as well as a climbing wall.

Costa Rica, Central America

Home to some of the most diverse natural landscapes and flanked by the Caribbean sea and Pacific ocean is the stunningly beautiful Costa Rica. Brimming with lush rain forests, serene beaches, rivers, cloud forests and biodiverse wildlife, this country is an undeniable world-class destination for nature tourism. In order to protect and conserve its resplendent biodiversity, Costa Rica has established numerous national parks, wildlife refuges and other protected areas. Moreover, sustainable travel has long been championed here with high availability of eco-lodges for accommodation even in remote natural areas. Aerial trams or cable cars, known to have minimal environmental impact, offer breathtaking views of the landscape and are found in several locations. Take guided tours to animal sanctuaries (that focus on rescue, rehabilitation and release) and learn about the conservation efforts of each species. Then spend hours relaxing, swimming and sunbathing at the pristine white sand beaches. For those with a penchant for adventure, the waves and surf opportunities here are like no other. For birdwatching enthusiasts, take a trip through the Monteverde Cloud Forest and leave with remarkable photos of the impressive array of bird species.

Reykjavík, Iceland

The stupendous beauty of Iceland’s natural scenery, which includes black sand beaches, glaciers, geothermal areas and much more, is sure to leave you in awe. Additionally, it is also a perfect destination for those that are keen on making responsible travel choices due to government-backed initiatives to protect its environment. Case in point, Iceland takes advantage of its remarkable geography and geology by producing all its electricity from renewable energy sources like hydropower and geothermal energy. Stay in sustainable hotels or eco-campsites during your trip in Reykjavík. Move around using buses (a growing number of which are electric) as well as renting bicycles and electric scooters. Or support a local farm by taking a tour on the back of an Icelandic horse. Then visit the famed Blue Lagoon, nestled within a stunning lava field, and treat yourself to a geothermal spa day. Take a guided walking tour in the city admiring the unique local architecture, landmarks like the iconic Hallgrímskirkja Church, museums and art galleries, then try local Icelandic delicacies. Don’t forget to visit Thingvellir, a famous historic site and national park.

Mallorca, Spain

Offering a variety of attractions for the sustainability focused traveller is Spain’s largest island in the Balearic archipelago – Mallorca. Renowned for its rich cultural heritage and breathtaking natural beauty, the island boasts excellent weather, dense forests, majestic mountains, golden sandy beaches and the Mediterranean Sea. Choose from housing options that implement sustainable practices and integrate different ecological solutions. Then traverse using the comprehensive public services like trains and buses or make use of the ample cycling trails. Take the opportunity for hiking and birdwatching through protected natural reserves like Mondragó Natural Park and the Sierra de Tramuntana Natural Park that serve as havens

for diverse wildlife. Attend organic farming tours that showcase sustainable agriculture experiences, which have become quite famous in Mallorca. Go snorkelling at Cala Llombards or Cala des Moro where the waters are home to spectacularly vibrant coral reefs and seagrass meadows. Hike the numerous trails at the Serra de Tramuntana, a UNESCO World Heritage-listed site, and enjoy stunning panoramic mountain views. Then taste locally-produced grapes made from sustainably grown fruit at vineyards practicing ecological viticulture. Also, make sure to truly indulge in delicious preparations at local restaurants that use local, fresh and organic produce.

Our world has finite resources and unchecked mass tourism risks causing significant damage to the environment. Sustainable tourism is an optimal and thoughtful way to go about our travel. Therefore, it works in everyone's best interest to support destinations that are committed to eco-friendly tourism practices. ✤

A CLASSY RETREAT

Embarking on a journey of enchanting experiences, Fernanda Langhammer headed to Raffles Al Areen Palace Bahrain for a luxurious stay.

• STAYCATION
STAYCATION •

Travelling is reported to have a beneficial impact on your health – mental and physical. It can improve your mood, reduce stress, boost your immune system and add a smile to your face. However, it requires a lot of planning and extra time, so how can you get the same positive effects without actually leaving the country? By going for a staycation. And I can truly say that my time at Raffles Al Areen Palace Bahrain allowed me to disconnect without the hassle of travelling.

The hotel is the only all-villa property in Bahrain, and it provides a luxurious experience. Offering 78 private villas of one, two and three bedrooms, each with their own pool, takes sophistication to a whole new level. With 24-hour butler service, you can be pampered at any time of the day or night – personalised service is an important aspect of Raffles’ values.

The hotel conservatory lobby is a marvellous, massive space that looks like someone’s living room with many potted plants (an array of tall, short and hanging plants) and different seating areas with sofas, armchairs and pouffes, as well as many decorative elements such as lamps, vases and candles. Everything is tastefully chosen in a colour palette that goes from ivory and earthy tones to grey and black. The greenery from the plants and fresh flowers adds a natural scent to the ambience, giving a pleasant sensation.

Meanwhile, water fountains take your hearing sense to calming and relaxing mode.

The Arabic arches and doors between the spaces bestow a sense of palatial grandeur to the property. Mashrabiya’s architectural element, with its iconic lattice technique, covers the main hall’s glass ceiling right after the entrance. This Islamic geometric pattern has also been added to other areas for a regional touch to the interior design. The natural light is allowed to pass through this magnificent ceiling, creating an enchanting vibe.

I was mesmerised by this fantastic place. I then headed to the left to find the check-in area; on my way, I passed by Ycone Paris, the celebrated patisserie from French Chef Yazid Ichemrahen – if you have a sweet tooth, this is undoubtedly the place to visit. I reached the reception, which looked more like an extension of the space without standing out – I loved that it blended with the rest of the décor, making it quite cosy. Win, the receptionist, welcomed me with a lovely smile; the check-in was smooth, and we were sitting in the buggy heading to our private villa in no time. Esther, our butler, drove us to our one-bedroom villa within comfortable walking distance of the lobby. The privacy of these villas needs to be mentioned. The big wooden door opened to a wide space, and the tall walls enclosing the area gave an incredible sense of seclusion. Inside the walls, you have the villa itself, with a living

room, bedroom and incredible bathroom, forming a U-shape. In the middle of the U, there is a Jacuzzi which is attached to the private pool. The pool is big and decorated with dark blue tiles with hints of sparkle, making it quite elegant. The temperature-controlled water allows it to be used throughout the year regardless of the weather. The building’s disposition permits you to see and access the pool from all rooms, but the view from the bedroom was the best! During our stay, I lay in bed and watched the water and the small waterfall for long moments, enjoying the peaceful view.

By the pool, there is a large dining table and loungers for chilling while enjoying the outdoors. There is also an indoor dining room and living area with a TV to relax with your friends and loved ones.

A selection of sweets waited for us when we got to the room and a welcome note from Marie-Beregere Chapoton, the hotel’s General Manager. Nespresso coffee and a selection of fine teas were also available in the room. We felt pampered with so much care and attention to detail.

Dining Experience

During our stay, we had the opportunity to try Palma, the hotel’s main restaurant. With a by-the-table concept, we had a spread of cold and hot appetisers such as original and octopus hummus, taboule, labneh with caramelised beetroot

and carrots, green salad, kibbeh, vegetable samboosa and a warm breadbasket. What a great start! The mains were too many and we chose a selection of grills with giant prawns, lamb chops and tender beef ribs – everything cooked to perfection. Nazir, our waiter for the night, was extra attentive and asked the chef to prepare some vegetarian options to accommodate our diet preferences. Our breakfast was served in the villa with a special touch: a floating basket. I love breakfast food, and the Raffles Breakfast Experience was more than I could have wished for (it was definitely my favourite meal). It had the best croissant I ever tried in my life and the local Peninsula goat cheese was spectacular. The Mezza, a halved eggplant with labneh topped with spring onions and pomegranate and Raffles Shakshouka, made with air-dried tomato, were the highlights of the savoury options. Lunch was also served in the villa, and we had the Lemon Thyme-infused Roasted Beetroot Salad, Spanish Water Scallop and Black Seabass, a light but filling meal that we all enjoyed for its freshness and well-balanced flavours.

Wellness Spa Villa

Not only does the calming environment of the hotel help you disconnect from the world outside, but the spa concept offered at Raffles takes you to a complete state of bliss. The Wellness Spa Villa is a three-bedroom villa transformed into

a realm of peace, providing unique treatments. It is the only hotel in Bahrain offering the latest technology and procedures from the exclusive Dr Burgener Switzerland. It also embraces signature therapies that pay homage to the Middle East and Bahrain’s rich heritage. If requested, the treatments can be performed in the guest’s villa for extra privacy.

As part of the well-being programme offered at Raffles, I joined a yoga session in the garden with Anudeep, the instructor. He started the session by explaining that yoga is not only about flexibility but about balancing body, mind and soul. The smell of the grass and the sound of birds made the one-hour experience very pleasant – I left feeling lighter and somehow energised.

Highlights at Raffles Al Areen Palace Bahrain

The greenery. The variety of exquisite plants throughout the property defines its embodiment as the Palace of the Secret Garden. With an array of potted plants and meticulously landscaped gardens blending local flora and exotic specimens, the resort showcases its commitment to horticulture and the sensory experience it provides. Incredible books. They are everywhere (thousands of them fill public areas and villas) and are amazing! As part of the Raffles brand, Raffles Al Areen Palace Bahrain has partnered with the Ultimate Library (a company that curates intelligent and stylish books for hospitality and

residential spaces) for luxurious literary collections.

The Writers Lounge feels like a private members’ club with impeccable décor in muted tones and statement lighting. On the ceiling is a poem by Bahraini poet Ahmed Mohammed Al Khalifa about the country’s rich civilisation, which gives a sense of uniqueness to the space. The walls are adorned with captivating Arabic artwork and calligraphy, and the seating area comprises a large plush sofa, comfy chairs, a pool, chess and checkers tables.

The villas are equipped with Compoz Paris, a sophisticated aromatic diffuser that uses 100% natural-origin perfumes to enhance well-being. You can choose your favourite scent according to your preferences and wellness goals.

Last but not least, the Butler Service – an iconic testament to the brand. Esther, our lovely butler, organised everything we needed during our stay and even provided a special eye mask and chamomile tea before bedtime.

Book your romantic escape or celebrate a special occasion in complete privacy at Raffles Al Areen Palace Bahrain. You will indulge in memorable experiences and be transported to an exciting place without leaving the island. ✤

3 Body Problem Shōgun

Need to Know:

3 Body Problem is an American science fiction television series adapted from the first novel in the Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy. When scientists in different parts of the world suddenly begin dying, a group of friends find themselves unexpectedly connected to some of the events. As they attempt to get a grip on things, a detective helps reveal the looming threat to all humanity.

Creators: David Benioff, D. B. Weiss, Alexander Woo Cast: Benedict Wong, Jess Hong, Eiza González, Rosalind Chao, John Bradley, Liam Cunningham, Jovan Adepo, Alex Sharp, Zine Tseng, Jonathan Pryce

Why Is It Worth Watching?

Inspired by the Hugo Award–winning Chinese novel The Three-Body Problem by Liu Cixin, the show kicks off amidst a cultural revolution taking place in 1960s China.

Ye Wenjie (Zine Tseng) sees her father get humiliated and beaten to death in a struggle session. She’s sent to a labour camp but commits a crime there and is sentenced to die in prison. However, her strong scientific background permits her an opportunity to instead work at a secret military base for all her life. There she makes a decision that reverberates across time and will terribly impact humanity’s future.

In present day UK, everybody’s perplexed since certain modern physics experiments have suddenly stopped working correctly, and then a large number of scientists from around the world are taking their own lives. Nothing makes sense anymore!

An investigator working for the Strategic Intelligence Agency, ends up tracking down a group of friends who are circumstantially caught in the middle of this mess. Together they end up uncovering a connection that’s exceedingly frightening and worrying if true!

The stage is set for an epic drama to unfold that’s reminiscent of the suspenseful brilliance showcased in the early seasons of Game Of Thrones.”

Need to Know:

Shōgun is an historical drama television miniseries based on the 1975 novel of the same name. Set in Japan in the year 1600, a highranking lord finds himself in a predicament when other lords on the Council of Regents unite against him and are determined to eliminate him. But a marooned European ship in a nearby fishing village could end up impacting all plans.

Creators: Rachel Kondo, Justin Marks Cast : Hiroyuki Sanada, Cosmo Jarvis, Anna Sawai, Tadanobu Asano, Takehiro Hira, Tommy Bastow

Why Is It Worth Watching?

The show’s events, based on James Clavell’s bestselling novel, takes place in Japan in the year 1600, at the dawn of a century-defining civil war. The country is under a feudal system that’s ruled by powerful lords (daimyō) and their loyal samurai, following the death of Japan’s ruler – the Taikō.

A Council of Regents, comprising five warlords, is in place to rule until the Taikō’s young heir comes of age. One of them, Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) finds himself summoned to meeting of the council in Osaka, where he stands accused of covertly expanding his land and keeping the heir’s mother hostage in his castle. The other regents want him dead. Concurrently, a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village and its captain, English sailor John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis), presents a curious case which could end up significantly affecting several outcomes that once seemed quite clear. With stunning visuals, an outstanding script and excellent performances all around, the stage is set for an epic drama to unfold that’s reminiscent to the suspenseful brilliance showcased in the early seasons of Game Of Thrones.

ON THE RECORD

COUNTRY, R&B, POP

Cowboy Carter

Stepping into a familiar pair of boots (cowboy ones to be precise) is Houston born-and-raised Beyoncé, presenting an exploration of country music-inspired songs on her eighth studio album, Cowboy Carter. Also referred to as ‘Act II: Cowboy Carter’, the project is the second instalment in a planned trilogy of albums. Though seemingly a country album on the surface, the music delivered here more accurately encompasses a diverse range of musical genres spanning blues, soul, rock and roll, pop, hip hop, R&B, funk and folk.

The opener American Requiiem is a bold country-rock opera that serves as a grand introduction kicking off the project. Next up, the classic Beatles’ track retitled as Blackbiird , takes flight with stunning vocals from Beyoncé that then further soars with gorgeous intricate harmonies and background vocals from upcoming Black country singers, an easy personal favourite! While, 16 Carriages narrates the story of lost innocence and sacrifice as a young performer entering the music business, the smooth and breezy groove on Bodyguard is a fun bop. On the reimagined Dolly Parton classic Jolene, Beyoncé opts for a more confrontational approach. The album offers a lot of great moments with exciting features, stirring storytelling and moving vocals throughout.

ROCK

Only God Was Above Us

American indie rockers, Vampire Weekend, make a triumphant return sounding their creative and quirky best on fifth studio album – Only God Was Above Us Longtime collaborator Ariel Rechtshaid returns on production; with former band member Rostam Batmanglij, a key contributor to the band’s earlier sound, helping with production as well.

Lead singer Ezra Koenig’s voice softly breaks the silence on first track Ice Cream Piano before the production ramps up to a manic splendour halfway through the track. The soothing refrain of “Untrue, unkind and unnatural” sung alongside the deep reverberating upright bass arpeggios on Classical, stay stuck on your mind. The layered metaphors and imagery combine flawlessly with the stuttering drums and stunning production on the choruses of Capricorn

The buoyant vibrancy of the classical piano and the catchy guitar section on Connect and Prep-School Gangsters are notable standouts that are worth the replay. And the instrumentation, especially the harp strings, make Gen-X Cops another superb track.

Only God Was Above Us wonderfully blends elements from previous popular projects and builds upon them with fresh engaging songwriting, catchy melodies and entrancingly impressive arrangements. Definitely worth a listen!

What We’re (Still) Talking About

Tourist Trap

What’s the favourite view in your locality?

Is it something tourists traipse miles to see? And, if you live nearby, do you sometimes wish the visitors would just stay home?

Well, that’s the case for the residents of the town of Fujikawaguchiko in Japan, who’ve had enough of tourists flocking to their streets to capture picture-perfect views of nearby Mount Fuji. The town saw a surge in visitor numbers after a certain shot of the iconic mountain

went viral but locals accuse the visitors of littering, jaywalking, trespassing on private property and more.

In fact, the town’s residents are so fed up that they’re building a large black screen on the stretch of sidewalk from which the popular view can be photographed apparently springing from the top of a convenience store.

However, since much of the town’s income comes from tourists, this sounds like a case of cutting off your nose to spite your face.

Listen To The Littles Reverse Heist

How often have you allayed your kids’ fears when they’ve claimed there’s a monster in their bedroom. From weird sounds coming from the walls to the ubiquitous beast under the bed, most of us have told our kids not to be silly, that their imagination is running away with them.

But, not so one woman in the US. For eight months, Ashley Massis Class’ young daughter Saylor kept telling everyone there was a monster behind

her wardrobe and eventually, after Ashley gave birth to a new baby and her daughter became more insistent, experts were called in.

Using a thermal camera, the ‘monster’ was revealed to be a 100lb honeycomb and around 50,000 bees!

Young Saylor was happy to say goodbye to her buzzy room mates and we bet Ashley will be taking any future tales of bedroom visitors very seriously.

We’ve all heard tales of thieves making off with paintings worth millions of dollars from museums over the years. Who could forget the Boston heist in which guards admitted two ‘police officers’ responding to a disturbance call who promptly tied up the guards and looted the museum for over an hour.

But museum administrators at Munich's Pinakothek der Moderne faced the opposite problem. They discovered that an employee from the museum’s

technical services team had snuck in after hours and hung one of his own paintings in the modern art collection.

The addition was spotted shortly after opening on the following day but staff decided to leave the picture and take it down after closing that night.

Museum staff didn’t elaborate on the subject matter of the painting but they did say it didn’t receive any positive feedback from gallery visitors. Seize the day, we say.
