ocated in the heart of the city, Crowne Plaza Doha - The Business Park is the ideal address for stretches of productivity followed by wellearned moments for leisure and relaxation. The hotel is located in the financial district of the city and is moments away from attractions such as Souq Waqif and Museum of Islamic Art, catering to both work and play modes. Everyone loves a quick check-in, and the concierge has me in my room within two shakes of a camel’s tail. The hotel may seem small, but the 288 guest rooms and 90 residence suites are scattered across long hallways and spacious courtyards. Admittedly, the winding halls are tricky to navigate at first – I’d be lying if I didn’t say I took a wrong turn towards the elevators once or twice. But that’s fast forgotten once I arrive at my room.

The Suite Life Our cosy one-bedroom suite has everything I need. It’s perfect for both short- and long-term stays with its fully equipped kitchen, intimate living area, spacious bedroom, and attached bathroom, yet boasts the convenience and service of a five-star hotel. What’s not to love? Tucked away in one of the busiest districts of the city, the property provides ergonomically designed accommodation that is ideal for the business traveller balancing work and leisure, with work zones and recreation areas that are distinct in personality. Rest assured, I will make use of both. I love rooms with large windows, especially when it’s wall to wall. With a few e-mails to tackle before lunch, I situate myself 46

And there are definitely moments when I position my laptop right under the rays of the sun whilst sitting inside the windowsill, loving the contrast between its warmth and the air-conditioning in the room. If you’re a longstanding resident of Qatar, you know this feeling well. In order to provide the safest stay possible, the hotel has removed all disposable items such as slippers, but all are available upon request. Basking in the Vitamin D and powering through my inbox, it feels like I’ve now earned room service for a job well done. The kitchen is accessible, compact, and fully equipped, but I don’t get much use of it as room service is just a button away. And its rotating menu is a treat as there’s always something new to try. The crispy Shrimp Wontons start with a satisfying crunch, leading to a soft and flavourful shrimp filling. But if you’re in the mood for a healthier option, the sweet and tangy Thai Chicken Salad comes highly recommended. Choosing from the mains is an easy decision. I order the margherita pizza because, well, pizza is always a good idea.

Food Matters Speaking of food, a stay at Crowne Plaza Doha - The Business Park isn’t complete without visiting its restaurants. For dinner, my dining companions and I opt to go big with the Experience It All dinner at Rodizio. A unique dining concept, this Brazilian churrascaria prepares and grills select cuts over an open flame in the open-plan kitchen located in the centre of the restaurant. Threaded onto giant skewers, succulent selections of beef, lamb, chicken, and even camel are served by passadores, who carve the meat tableside. The smoky aroma at Rodizio alone has our mouths watering, and this is only perpetuated by the somewhat unexpected Avocado & Hummus. Who knew two creamy textures would pair that well together? Now for the main event: the meat. It arrives on rotation on flashy skewers befitting a samurai, each better than the last. Our favourites? It’s a toss-up between the tender lamb chops and spicy chicken wings. We end the feast – and our night – by indulging in the roast pineapple with cinnamon, and quickly see why it’s such a crowd-pleaser. After such a hearty dinner, we decide to keep it light with a refreshing late lunch at Arguelina Lounge the following day. This bright and contemporary lounge, complete with its retractable roof and relaxed ambiance, is perfect for a mid-day gathering. This time opting for Arabic cuisine, we start with the soft and smoky Grilled Halloumi and tangy Arguelina Rocca salad. For our mains, we can vouch for the Arguelina Mix Grill and Jumbo Prawns Meshwi. A word to the wise: dig into the sweet-spicy prawns while they’re still hot before moving onto the array of grilled meat that is bursting with Middle Eastern spices.

Why is It Worth Watching?

It feels like the holiday season rolled around a little earlier this year thanks to the release of Netflix original Holidate – not that we’re

complaining. Yes, it’s a typical romcom (read: predictable and unrealistic), but it makes for a decent 103-minute escape. The story revolves around Sloane and her family's constant pressure for her to find right person and, after yet another nightmarish Christmas at home, she crosses paths with the solution: Jackson. Bonding over their mutual hatred for being single over major holidays, they agree to become each other’s “holidate” sans romance. The movie makes stops at every holiday ranging from New Year's Eve and Valentine's Day to Easter, Cinco de Mayo, Mother's Day, and more until we’re back at Christmas. And despite the main characters being adamant that they’re not looking to settle down, they end up finding just what they need (spoiler alert: each other). Holidate may be formulaic in nature, but all those awkward family moments make it worth watching.

This all-girl musical sensation gave us a teaser of what’s next with an explosion of confetti at the end of the "Wasabi" music video back in 2018 – and we’ve been waiting ever since. Two years later, it’s here: their sixth studio album, Confetti. Little Mix has a new record label and, apparently, a new sound. Their new R&B/ pop vibe features the best of both worlds, with feisty musings on everything from relationships to gender equality based upon their newfound creative liberty and control. For example, the track “Sweet Melody” serves us real talk on toxic relationships and warns fellow females with words like, "Every time we go dancing, I see his straying eyes/Gave him too many chances, push my gears too many times." Their new sound is a fierce, mercifully coherent statement and anthem of independence. And we approve.

Stepping away from her father’s footsteps, Paris Jackson makes her musical debut with haunting vocals, gleaming electric-guitar licks, and a sultry fire in her album. Without a single Michael-esque moment, she steps into her own sound and has us hooked onto her languid voice. Paris co-wrote nine of the 11 tracks – writing the remaining herself – with Andy Hull, leader of indie-rock band Manchester Orchestra. Incidentally, Andy also supplied vocals on the song “Eyelids”. The alluring and moody sounds on this album let you lose yourself in its alt-folk atmosphere, one track seamlessly leading to the next. The album offers intimate songs from ballads to spoken word that will fit you like your favourite sweater on a chilly winter evening. The album is far from sunny; it’s a compilation of romantic tragedy delivered with sweet vocal perfection.

This month we were given the opportunity to put the new BMW 4 Series 430i Coupé through its paces by the great team at BMW Alfardan, and needless to say, we could not accept quickly enough. The first thing that caught our eye on the new Coupé was the emphasis placed on dynamic power when this car was first conceived. The muscular yet sleek design of this latest generation, sports two-seater ensures it is easy on the eyes. In fact, no matter where we stood in relation to the vehicle, the small number of crisp lines combined with generously sized surfaces gave the body a striking appearance. The design of the traditional BMW kidney grille has evolved, now slanting forward and extending down almost to the edge of the front apron. The elaborate honeycomb mesh with horizontal inlays further adds to the progressive feel of this car. The robust stance of the Coupé is underscored by its sculptured rear wheel arches and 19-inch, high-quality, light alloy wheels, whilst the high-precision contours of the extended roofline further contribute toward the elegant quality of this motor vehicle. At the back end, narrow L-shaped rear lights, a well-proportioned rear apron, a stylish diffuser insert and twin taillights reinforce the sporty look of the new 4 Series. Shifting our attention to the interior, we were immediately struck by both the functional layout and use of high-quality materials in the driver-focused cabin. The interior of this car is the perfect example of refinement and class. The ultra-comfy, adjustable sports seats provide the perfect driving position whilst the newly designed sports steering wheel feels just right in your hands. The performance-centric design of the cockpit together with the coordinated design of the instrument panel, door panel and highset console, all flow together to create a modern and enveloping environment. Additionally, an acoustic glass windshield has been installed as standard, ensuring a far quieter and more pleasant drive for both occupants. The new BMW 4 Series Coupé houses the new BMW operating system 7.0. This impressive system includes two 12.3-inch displays and allows for display content to be individually configured. The intuitive multimodal interaction between driver and vehicle can take place via the Control Display’s touchscreen, the iDrive Controller, the multifunction buttons on the steering wheel and via voice and gesture control. We found these novel options to be both efficient and user friendly, giving us a far greater degree of control over the driving experience. This 4 Series also supports smartphone integration through both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Having completed our thoroughly enjoyable inspection of both the exterior and interior, it was time to get this beauty out onto the road. As soon as we engaged the ignition, the sound of the 430i’s 258 hp, TwinPower Turbo, four-litre petrol engine made

us smile from ear to ear. The power of this superb engine coupled with an eight-speed steptronic transmission allows for the 430i to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 5.8 seconds and to have a top speed of 250 km/h. Furthermore, we found the handling, cornering, braking and responsiveness of this vehicle to be outstanding and we always felt in complete control throughout our journey. uxury streetwear has been all the rage for the past few years, but just as we saw its popularity wane ever so slightly, it bounced back with a vengeance in 2020. Because, yes, coronavirus. The pandemic has changed a lot about our daily lives, and our shopping habits are no exception. We’ve swapped our suits for sweatshirts, our stilettos for sneakers. But these ups and downs in the realm of athleisure have nothing to do with Bunyamin Aydin. The founder and creative director of Les Benjamins started out humbly – with a project centred around 30 printed tees, to be specific – and quietly rose through the ranks, eventually showing at Milan Fashion Week and partnering up with the likes of Puma. Today, in the midst of a relentlessly complicated year, the luxury streetwear label has a lot to celebrate, the recent launch of its online store and unveiling of its Autumn/Winter 2020 collection included. Entitled Wild Wild East, it stays true to the Istanbulbased brand's interpretation of the East from a unique point of view. Here, subtle nods to Anatolian culture can be found via colours that range from icy grey and pale yellow to pomegranate and denim blue. Since their release into the market, they have been met with positive reviews. And for good reason. he ‘F’ in FACT stands for food, so imagine our delight upon the invitation for a one night only gastronomical event at The Westin Doha Hotel & Spa, with renowned two-starred Michelin Chef Maria Marte, as she takes over the Hunters Room & Grill Kitchen. The night entails culinary conversations, and mouth-watering innovative selections we’ve yet to have anywhere else. We begin our evening with drinks and light conversations on the beautiful and scenic terrace, not-so-patiently awaiting the fusion of flavours of our eight-course meal, that is being prepared on the other side of the door. Soon enough we are escorted to our seats and then begins the parade of divine selections of food and drinks. Each entrée is paired perfectly with a chosen drink to make sure our palate recognises and combines flavours for the highest height of flavour and texture. This event can be described as food luxury, wrapped in class, and etiquette throughout. Every dish displayed in front of us is inspired by flavours and colours from the Dominican Republic. In the midst of this gastronomical night, we also got to ask the lady of the evening a few questions. Maria Marte grew up in the town of Jarabacoa in the Dominican Republic and brings her memories of the greenery of nature and the flavours of her home into each creation. Being the only women in the Community of Madrid to hold two prestigious Michelin stars, her journey was not easy in a male-dominated industry, but she persisted through her own obstacles. She recalls an account that still lingers in the back of her mind when she thinks about her journey, “When arriving at the table the customers asked me, ‘where is the Chef to congratulate him?’ and I answered ‘I am the chef,’ and they had a confused reaction because they expected a man.” Even though a female chef was unheard of, she knew her calling was in the kitchen from a young age. She began working alongside her mother who was a pastry chef up to when she created her first-ever dessert, the Hibiscus Flower on a Pistachio Crumble, an ode to her country’s vibrant colours, flavours and joy. We heartily indulge in this Hibiscus Flower cherished dessert at the Hunters Room & Grill, which truly encompasses a chemistry of flavours, eye-catching presentations, and history. Marte worked her way up from washing dishes to becoming an award winning sensation and inspiration. She details her journey in a few words, “In the same place where I started washing dishes, I had the opportunity to be a kitchen assistant, then a cook, head of party, and sous-chef until I became the chef,” showcasing her fighter and passionate spirit. María Marte’s gastronomic proposal for the night includes the Smoked El with Rocoto Chilli and Coconut, Sweet Potato Cream, Crispy Seaweed & Herring Caviar, Slow Cooked Lamb & Dates Gnocchis; and a sinful Creamy Chocolate and Almond Ice Cream. The menu doesn’t end here and every dish on the table has us on culinary cloud 9. Each dish brings forth the chef’s innovative thinking, bold personality and 66

creativity that paved the way for her success throughout the years, winning her not only the prestigious Michelin stars but the “National Prize for Gastronomy (2015), the International Chef of the Year” awarded by The Best of DR 2018 Mercado Magazine, the Dominican Republic amongst countless others. These highly coveted rewards are the end result of a humbling rags to riches tale, but even though Chef Marte soars in the skies she relies on her humility to keep her grounded and connected with her humble recipes that distinguish her from her colleagues. “My creations are based on my origin and environment, what I do in the kitchen is a reflection of my life. In some dishes I have tried to combine noble ingredients with very basic ingredients to bring together both social classes,” she says emphasising the important connection she’s maintained to her roots. “The example is my dish ‘arepa plankton’, corn is a very basic product and caviar represents a noble product and the combination of both is a reflection of it.” And whilst she wows us at the table at the Hunters Room

& Grill Kitchen she mentions that she prefers the staple foods of her country when she’s at home on any regular day such as arroz con habichuela (white rice with red beans) or a typical Spanish dish like Tortillas de patatas (potato omelettes). And keeping true and loyal to her roots with the aim of giving back, Maria Marte also initiated the María Marte Foundation and stays involved in her solidarity projects. Her goal is to help young women who are keen on gastronomy, to study and prepare, in hopes of creating better livelihoods for themselves and their families. “Helping others has always motivated me and I am convinced that through the foundation I can make life easier for people who need it,” she adds. For the experience itself, we are taken to a beautiful beach, complete with candlelit tables and rustic-chic rugs. If you’re looking for a romantic evening, this is it. The venue allows ample privacy from your dining neighbours as well as stunning views of the Arabian Gulf and city skyline, with segregated spaces for you and your guests. As for your sorely neglected Instagram feed? There’s a swing set right at the edge of the water, sorting out that champagne problem instantly. 72

Upon arrival, we’re given the option to eat at the table or take the traditional approach and dine on the mats laid across the sand. We choose to dine at the table, but make our way to the rug and take in the waves crashing on the shore while we wait for our first course. We highly recommend getting there a little early to relax and take in your surroundings as you await your meal, and trust us: this is a meal worth waiting for. We begin our culinary journey with an array of delicious starters and warm Arabic bread. Our table is adorned with clay pots containing hummus, tabbouleh, fattoush, muhammara, and moutabel. The use of clay pots also plays well into the Bedouin dining nuances that have lasted through the ages – clearly, Sharq Village & Spa knows authenticity is all about the details. Our first dip into the hummus has us going in for more, but no double dipping. Pandemic or not, that is a steadfast rule on our table. The tabbouleh and fattoush are refreshing and light, while the muhammara and moutabel are equally appetising. After we tastefully clean out our clay pots, we are called forth to witness the unveiling of our main course. But first, a little backstory. Zarb is a Bedouin cooking technique that utilises the earth itself as an oven to cook large quantities of meat and vegetables. Traditionally, a large hole is dug into the desert and is heated by a fire. Once nothing but the embers of the fire remain, the meat and vegetables are hoisted within this makeshift oven

and covered by a large rock to keep the heat in (and sand out). The chef at Sharq Village & Spa has finessed certain aspects of the process, but kept its essence intact. The meal is prepared in a brick-lined oven that is situated well within the sand on the beach and switched on at 11am. The meat and vegetables are then placed inside at 3pm and cooked until 8:30pm – talk about a slow roast done right! At the unveiling of our meal, shovels are used to remove the sand capturing the heat in order to debut a large metal trap door and, soon enough, emerges our dinner on a two-tiered metal frame. The metal frame is lined with the vegetables and meat on the top frame, and rice and additional vegetables on the bottom frame. The chef creates large sharing platters for each table that consist of the aromatic rice, tender lamb shoulder that slides off the bone, grilled vegetables that cut like butter, and a delectable mint sauce to accent it all. There’s more than enough to go around, so make sure you arrive with an empty stomach. You’ll thank us later. To truly bask in the experience set before us, we opt to have our dessert on a carpet by the waves and are served two kinds of umm ali, Arabic sweets, and a sticky date pudding that we swiftly declare a winner. A much-needed escape from the real world, this zarb experience is rife with one-of-a-kind moments and priced at QR 1,200 for six people, making it ideal for birthdays and other celebrations. A good brunch can be whittled down to a simple equation of good food, good company, and a lively atmosphere, and we found it all at the Gaucho Brunch at Hunters Room & Grill. Located at The Westin Doha Hotel & Spa, the contemporary steakhouse offers quality cuts from around the world with a unique style of serving, translating to a great dining experience every time. This themed brunch brings with it some cowboy magic, making our Saturdays oh-so-meaty. Dining at Hunters Room & Grill for brunch is a whole new experience when we compare it to the countless dinners we’ve had here before. Instead of the classy and intimate atmosphere, we are pleased to sit amongst lively laughter, smiling children, group photos, and the ever-present enticing aromas. The atmosphere shift from morning to evening is worlds apart, giving you two experiences in one room. Since we’re playing it safe, our buffet is served tabletop and family style, giving us the option to reorder our favourites from the starters and main courses throughout the afternoon. We love not having to take a walk for that last bite! Here, the food comes to you. We know we’re off on the right note as the starters begin to occupy their place at the table. The beautifully crafted dishes take over all our senses as the provoleta, empanadas, chorizo, and salad have us perplexed on what to try first. We ultimately decide to begin with the provoleta while it’s hot, indulging in the warm baked wheel of cheese that is garnished with fresh herbs to really capture its flavour. The spiced and wholesome chorizos come with bread brimming with warm buttery goodness and one of the most delectable chimichurri sauces we’ve had in Doha. A word to the wise: be sure to double up on your empanadas order. This soft and warm pastry is stuffed with the perfect blend of spices and meat, and we cannot get enough. If you’re feeling a little heavy after all those appetisers, the light and savoury salad is a quick way to add some greens to your meal before you unleash onto the meats. Hunters Room & Grill knows the significance of culinary presentation and showcases its skills through our main courses – the food looks as good as it tastes. A large, dark slab is adorned with selections and sides, and accompanied by two cast iron pans boasting premium cuts of meat. These tender and juicy mains consist of Asado de Tira (grilled short ribs), Rump (picanha), Lamb Chops, Chicken Thighs, Flank Steak, and Prawns. And on the side? Triple-cooked fries, mashed potatoes, beans, and grilled vegetables – but it doesn’t stop there. The table further welcomes an array of sauces – read: mushroom, peppercorn, garlic mayo, homemade BBQ, and chimichurri (of course). We haven’t seen a spread of this sort in a while! Our picks are definitely the Asado de Tira, Lamb Chops, and Chicken Thighs, but honestly? Each cut, each sauce, and each side is better than the last. For dessert, we

ne aspect of Qatar that speaks volumes of its diversity? Doha’s dining scene. Rich in cuisines from around the world, the city is a food enthusiast’s dream. Yes, it lacks restaurants that pay tribute to the country’s own hospitality and flavours, but proving critics wrong is Walima. Located at Mondrian Doha, it’s a truly original and ingenious take on Qatari fine-dining. Right out of a storybook setting, this quirky and colourful restaurant brings together magical elements from Alice in Wonderland and Arabian Nights. We suggest you bring an active imagination and an empty stomach as you step into the pages of your favourite childhood books. We are greeted by black-and-white walls, columns, and floors, all laid under a charmingly chaotic array of colourful Arabian lamps. We dare you not to frequently look up. The rest of the restaurant also feels wonderfully whimsical, with a sunken majlis that is perfect for family meals, embossed VIP glass boxes, and decorative porcelain shishas that are practically lifesize. In all honestly, we’re just waiting for the Hookah-Smoking Caterpillar from Alice in Wonderland to make an appearance. What results is a sensory overload in the best sense of the word – and our food hasn’t even arrived yet. The beautiful terrace at Walima boasts panoramic views of the Lusail skyline, West Bay Lagoon, and The Pearl-Qatar. It is adorned with green leafy cabanas, bar stools, sofas, and regular dining tables, giving you a variety of seating options. We opt for a high table in the corner in order to take in stunning views of the city while we peruse the menu. Here, East meets West for a casual, laidback dining experience. Our dinner begins with the Selection of Cold Mezzeh. This little platter is good for two to three people, and comes with the creamiest hummus we’ve had in a while. Amongst it comes a selection of Eggplant Moutable, Muhammarah, Tabouleh, and Yalannji, and we must confess that we wipe the plates clean. Starters are always a good way to judge the food in a restaurant and, based on our first impressions, the mains are going to be a treat. We go for the Persian-Style Lamb Shank and Mixed Seafood, both dishes boasting meat that is perfectly marinated and cooked to perfection. The lamb slides off the bone and pairs perfectly with the sweet saffron rice, with the thick beef broth on side making this dish even more delectable. The seafood selection is bursting with freshness, but our favourite is the calamari. Now, anyone who has suffered through tough, overcooked calamari in the past knows how often restaurants get it wrong. But at Walima, it’s tender and gently spiced, making it a must-try. We end our dinner with the Fried Oreo Ice Cream that is as decadent and as playful as the setting. Sure, it’s the imaginative décor that will bring diners in search of a memorable experience to Walima, but it’s the food that will have them coming back for more. Us included. ✤
