Jersey is a special place at any time of year, most people think it comes into its own during the summer months but, for me, the cooler months are when you really get to discover what makes us tick. The weather stays a little warmer than the mainland and if we get even the slightest sprinkling of snow the island grinds to a halt but worry not, even if it does you’ll still find some breathtaking coastal walks, many excellent pubs where you’ll be able to enjoy a pint or two by a fire and plenty of things to buy to take home for friends and family.

I’m biased of course but I hope that you’ll look out for the Genuine Jersey mark when making your choices, it’s the sign of local provenance and helps you to identify things which have been caught, reared, grown or made here. The association has more than 180 artisans and producers within it, many of whom will be selling their wares at our Christmas Markets in the Royal Square which take place every Thursday to Sunday until 10 December. We’d love you to come down and soak up the festive atmosphere and meet and buy directly from the producers and you’ll also find the Cock and Bottle here, one of those great pubs I mentioned. If you miss out on the markets, then keep your eyes peeled during your visit for the roadside stalls full of local produce, fish vans selling their local catch, Jersey Dairy’s milk and butter, butchers selling locally reared meat, or for the independent shops selling locally made crafts, The Trading Point in St. Lawrence is just one of many we’d recommend.

It’s easy to keep it local when you have such a rich bounty of produce surrounding you.

Where are you?

You’re onSET! our beautiful little island in the English Channel but you’re a GET

lot closer to France (around 14 miles at the closest point) than you are THINGS TO KNOW WHILE YOU’RE HERE to England (closer to 100 miles). You’re surrounded by four other main Channel Islands; Guernsey, Alderney, Sark and Herm and a handful of smaller inhabited and uninhabited islands. Our nearest coastal towns in France are Granville and the historic port of Saint-Malo. The term “Channel Islands” began to be used around 1830, possibly first by the Royal Navy as a collective name for the islands.

Our Population

Since the last census in 2021 it’s estimated that our population has grown to around 103,267. You’ll find most of us in and around St. Helier leaving most of the northern, easterly and westerly parishes unspoilt and rural in nature. Roughly 50% of Jersey dwellers on the last census were locally born with 29% from the UK, 8% from Portugal/Madeira, 3% from Poland, 3% from Ireland, 1% from France and the rest from elsewhere.

Money

Pounds Sterling is the legal tender but we also have our own banknotes and coins which are classed as accepted tender elsewhere in the UK, people can take it, but they don’t have to - so don’t forget to spend your last few pound notes on souvenirs before you leave. If you forget though, a pound note also makes a great souvenir. Also, if you hold one of our bank notes up to the light you’ll not see a British king or queen in the hologram but the image of one of our own royalty. 17

Arriving and leaving

If you arrive by air you’ll be in the west of the island. Served by buses and taxis for onward travel right outside the arrivals hall, hire car services are also available inside the arrivals hall. If you’re wearing your sea legs, you’ll have arrived in St. Helier, Jersey’s capital. Taxis are available outside the arrivals hall although central St. Helier is only a short walk away. Scheduled ferries operate between the Channel Islands, England and France and for those with their own boat Jersey Marinas offer a whole host of services for which they’ve earned ‘5 Gold Anchor’ status, an internationally recognised accolade. +44 (0) 1534 446000 | www.ports.je

Public Buses

Buses operate throughout the island to and from Liberation Station in St. Helier. All buses are low floor, so they are all fully accessible for wheelchair users, pushchairs, prams and some smaller mobility scooters (with a permit). Low-floor buses also help those who have other mobility requirements. All our buses have easy-access ramps and a dedicated wheelchair space. A quick reference map of bus routes is overleaf. Taxis / Car hire

There are taxi ranks at the airport, harbour and around St. Helier. Different tariffs apply depending on time of day and day of the week. Payment in cash used to be preferred, but all taxis are now required to accept cards. Private hire cabs are also available to hire if you’re not near a taxi rank. Evie electric cars can be unlocked and hired with the Evie app. 18

If you get lost, it’s worth bearing in mind that most locals won’t know where the A6 or B12 roads are, because all of our roads bear their own names in addition to these classifications. Your best bet? Point on a map or tell someone where you’re trying to get to! If you’re renting a car you’ll notice that the registration plate bears a white ‘H’ on a red background which denotes it as a hired vehicle. You’d best not flag down one of these for directions as they’re probably lost too. Like the United Kingdom, we drive on the left hand side of the road and all speed limits are posted in mph. The maximum permissable speed limit anywhere is 40mph, with a large number of 30mph and 20mph zones. In the rural parishes you may also notice signs denoting ‘Green Lanes’ where the maximum speed limit is 15mph and right of way is given to those walking, cycling or riding horses. You’re also likely to come across a local driving phenomenon known as filter in turn. As you approach one, priority is given to traffic on your right. After they’ve made their move it’s your turn and traffic on your left will yield to you. It’s a great way to keep traffic flowing and once you see it in action it’ll all make sense. The mini roundabout at the bottom of Beaumont Hill is a prime example. Don’t panic, you’ll be fine!

Parking

On street parking requires the use of either a yellow disc or Paycard (available from convenience stores and hire car pick up points) to be displayed inside the car as signposted. PayByPhone parking is a cashless parking service that allows you to pay for parking using your mobile phone. It is available in all paying public car parks. Search the Apple or Android app store for ‘PayByPhone’. Multi-storey car parks also require Paycards with the exception of the Sand Street and underground Waterfront car parks which have ticket machines that accept both cash and cards as payment.

The GST Refund Scheme Would you like to save even more on your jewellery and watch purchases while you’re in Jersey? Jeff Chinn from Hettich Jewellers explains how the GST Visitor Refund Scheme could benefit your visit, with a refund of Jersey’s 5% Goods and Services Tax in addition to Jersey’s VATfree prices. If you want to take advantage of the GST refund scheme, which is available to visitors leaving the island by scheduled flights or ferries, and spending a total of £300 or more, then ensure you are buying from a participating retailer.

It's not compulsory for retailers to opt in, so ask before you buy. Once purchasing from a participating retailer, the process is simple. Fill out a simple form in store, have it stamped at the airport or ferry port when you leave, and send the form back to the retailer for a refund, less a small administration fee. To find out if you are eligible, visit Hettich or look on the Jersey www.gov.je website.

THE PROCESS YOU MUST GIVE THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION TO THE RETAILER: > Your passport or a form of identification > Details of your arrival and departure flights and dates > Your name and address HOW TO CLAIM A REFUND Once you are back in your country of residence, and within two months of your departure date from Jersey, you should return the retailer's copy of the stamped form to the retailer. Maison de Jersey £6.45 Like everything from La Mare this is made in their inhouse kitchen. Despite the name Black Butter is actually a rich and spicy apple preserve that goes back hundreds of years. The island used to be full of apple orchards and cider was made by farmers to give to staff as part of their wages! People would then make Black Butter by boiling the cider over an open fire for up to two days and would then add apples, sugar, lemon, spices and a hint of liquorice while continuously stirring with a wooden ‘rabot’ or paddle. Use it on sweet or savoury dishes.

Catherine Best St. Peter’s Windmill, home to award winning jewellery designer Catherine Best, was the last surviving working tower mill in Jersey. This beautiful historic landmark dates back to 1837 and is built from Jersey granite. The weighbridge and millers office where grain used to be delivered to the windmill for milling also survived and has become a handy site for buses to stop. The Windmill is part of a complex that includes a jewellery manufacturing workshop, the Catherine Best jewellery showroom.

Le Noir Pré

Also known as the Le Don Hilton, the 18th-century guard house and powder magazine that sits on the seawall. Its whitewashed walls and vault give it a distinctive appearance making it an informal daymark for sailors and surfers. Can be rented for events.

Often known as ‘The Orchid Field’, this unique site consists of two distinct meadows; Le Noir Pré and Le Cios du Seigneur near to the Wetland Centre. The site is one of the last remaining strongholds of the Jersey Orchid. Flowers in May / June.

One of Britain’s most unique collection of trees in an arboretum called The Forgotten Forest planted in the 1970s. See an eclectic collection of mature trees from North American Maples and Oaks to Australasian Eucalyptus and the giant Californian Redwood.

Driving down the winding hills at either end gives a breathtaking view of St. Ouen’s Bay and the drive along the five mile road from end to end is one of the most picturesque beach drives around. A mecca for surfers and beach lovers. Stop at a café and suck in the fresh air!

Jersey has a large number of Neolithic dolmen and passage graves, many of which are free to access. They range over a wide period, from around 4800 BC to 2250 BC. Consult Jersey Heritage to learn more about these historic burial groups.

St. Catherine’s Woods

Battery Lothringen was the only German Naval batterie in Jersey. In the 90's the CI Occupation Society recovered one of the batteries gun barrels, which were thrown off the cliffs at the end of the war and this is on display in Gun emplacement Number One.

Also known as Rani Woods. This wonderful woodland is set in a deepcut, steep-sided valley. A stream running through the valley floor has helped develop a wide range of habitats within the woodland.

One of the most appealing of Jersey’s public gardens, the grounds contain colourful displays of trees and plants that flourish in the mild climate. The park is the location of a World War II cemetery and also hosts events throughout spring and summer including movies in the park.

This beautiful church and graveyard date back to Norman times and the adjacent Fisherman’s Chapel is thought to have been built in the 12th Century with 14th and 15th century murals. It’s worth a visit for its views across St. Brelade’s Bay alone.

Explore the parts of the Aspiring Geopark that lie offshore. From an exhilarating RIB ride, to a lobster picnic and glass of champagne on a deserted beach to dolphin spotting – there is a Seafari for everyone. Walking.

Jersey’s cliff-edged heights and wide sandy bays are best seen on foot, with a breeze to keep you cool. You’ll find an extensive network of footpaths as well as winding country lanes, and breathtaking beaches. Walking is a great way to explore the outdoors allowing us to wander through Jersey’s spectacular landscapes, enjoying this Aspiring Geopark’s natural and built heritage. Explore the Aspiring Jersey Island Geopark on two wheels, with a network of 15 mph ‘Green Lanes’ through the island’s countryside and miles of bicycle-friendly routes, a cycle ride is the perfect way to explore our unique island. Enjoy taking in the sights from the slow lane or challenge yourself with an uphill climb. We may be small, but we pack many diverse, beautiful and challenging cycle routes into our nine miles by five. You’ll be spoilt for choice for bike hire in Jersey, you’ll find mountain, leisure and road bikes and e-bikes if you’re looking for a little assistance. See an example ride on page 114

Diving and Snorkelling.

The sun warms the sea all summer long. The average water temperature is 15 – 20°C during the summer months (April to October). Jersey’s shallow marine habitats offer an opportunity to explore the beauty and diversity that lies beneath the waves through the creation of snorkel trails at Portelet Bay and Bouley Bay. Portelet Bay boasts an element of isolation from the island, forming its own little oasis. A small islet located in the middle of the bay, Janvrin’s Tomb (or Île au Guerdain), is surrounded by water at high tide. Bouley Bay has long been the spiritual home of diving on the island and the trail there showcasing a range of habitats as well as a reef of kelp and seaweed stretching across the bay alongside a sandy seabed.

What makes our Aspiring Geopark so special?

Sarah Maguire Jersey Biodiversity Centre, The Jersey sub species of buff-tailed bumblebee, despite the name, does not have a buff tail. It is also known as the Jersey white-tailed bumblebee. This bumblebee is a native pollinator to Jersey and can have active nests over winter. They nest underground often using small mammal holes with up to 500 workers in a nest. They can be found all over the Island, from gardens to sites of scientific interest. Ralph Nichols Member of the Geology, Archaeology and Jèrriais sections in the Société Jersiaise. “My favourite geology is La Crête point which is on the east coast, north side of Anne Port Bay which is an outcrop of columnar joints of lava flow called rhyolite”.

Samantha Blampied PhD Researcher, in affiliation with the University of Plymouth and Blue Marine Foundation. Favourite of Jersey’s marine life: Tope. “Tope is a species of shark found in our waters. They are on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species as they are being unsustainably fished in other parts of the world.” Tope can be found at Les Minquiers, one of our offshore reefs, which boasts hundreds of granite fangs, wildlife, geology and archaeology.

They each have their own unique personality. Over the following pages we highlight beaches and places you might want to stop for a coffee or snack! It might be worth calling ahead to check opening times in winter months, as some close on certain days.

Anne Port

Bouley Bay

A quiet and rarely crowded east-facing stretch of sand that catches the morning and midday sun. 2

A winding hill leads down to this steep pebble beach with deep water for competent swimmers. The bay is home to one of Jersey’s scuba-diving schools. 4

Archirondel

Green Island

This popular beach with an excellent beach cafe is pebbly at first but sandy at low tide when the water stays shallow for some way out. East-facing, Archirondel loses the sun in the late afternoon. 2

A locals’ favourite, this sheltered south-facing beach is a real sun trap where soft sand, rock climbing and rock pool adventures await. The tide goes out a long way, so take care with the swift incoming tide and pick times close to high water to enjoy swimming or paddling. 1

Grève de Lecq

The most popular of the north coast beaches, Grève de Lecq’s sheltered sands and rockpools are ideal for families but lose the sun in the late afternoon. Don’t miss the excellent cafés and local pubs close by. Even in the winter months, some providers offer coasteering trips for guided cold-water dips! 9

Bonne Nuit

A tiny fishing harbour with space to play on the sand, picnic or catch some sun, but more of a wild swim that some other beaches. Worth visiting for the excellent beach café. 4

Grouville Bay / La Rocque Harbour SE A long stretch of sand that leads to Gorey harbour, with Mont Orgueil Castle as a backdrop. Plenty of parking, beach cafes and kiosks as well as a children’s beachside playground and soft sand make Long Beach a local favourite. 1a, 2

A real suntrap on the south coast, once you’ve wandered down the steep path from the car park and crossed the pebbles, you’ll reach a sheltered south-facing beach with golden sand and shallow turquoise water, ideal for swimming. 12a, 14 to

Ouaisné Bay

This south west facing beach is the wilder contrast to the adjoining St. Brelade’s Bay. The beaches are connected at low tide, or cross the pine-rich headland and walk along the sea wall next to the protected Ouaisné Common towards locals’ favourite, The Smugglers Inn. 12a

Havre des Pas

Close to the centre of St. Helier, this sandy beach is worth a visit to see the architecture of the art deco pool, filled by the tide each day. The beach is easy to access, and safe for swimmers. 1

Rozel Bay

A small fishing village lined with beach huts and harbourside cottages, Rozel is more of a fishing harbour than a place to swim. But at low tide, Rozel’s small stretch of white sand is safe for children to play, 3 just look out for the Rozel geese!

St. Aubin’s Bay

A crescent of south-facing sand from St. Helier to St. Aubin, the beach is in full sun for most of the day. With several beach cafes along the promenade front, look out for the softest sand around the Gunsite Café with jet ski hire close by. 12a, 14, 15

St. Brelade’s Bay

The beautiful beach at St. Brelade’s Bay is one of the island’s busiest; a visitor favourite for its soft sand, safe swimming, beach activities and seaside eating. Voted as number three in the TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice awards, this stunning south-facing beach is in the sun for most of the day. 12a, 14

Portelet Bay

A pristine sandy cove reachable by a long flight of steps, where the intrepid are rewarded with a stunning natural playground of rock pools and sea caves. There’s safe swimming when the sea is calm, and surfing when it’s wild. The beach is completely covered at high tide. It’s quite a walk down from the bus stop so pack sensible footwear! 8

St. Ouen’s Bay

A magnificent beach and natural playground for surfers and adrenaline seekers. It’s where one of the oldest surfing clubs in Europe has its home and makes a stunning setting for beach walks. Swimmers should take care in the strong currents and stick to the flagged zones. The beach is patrolled by RNLI lifeguards during the season. 22

Climb down the long flight of steps and you’ll be rewarded with a sunny, sheltered and sandy beach circling Janvrin’s Tomb at the centre. Portelet Bay Beach Café serves excellent pizza throughout the season, and the pub at the top of the steps, the Old Portelet Inn is a family favourite. 12a

Grantez

Explore Jersey’s ancient history as you walk amongst the megalithic Dolmen de Monts of Grantez, in Jersey’s north west. From its high vantage point, explore the maritime grass heathland and the wealth of wildlife that live on the site, and watch the sun set across St. Ouen’s Bay. Listen out for the kestrels calling goodnight. Don’t miss the annual sunset concerts held on the fourth weekend of June. Picnickers and revelers dance to the harmonic sounds of local bands performing in the beautiful natural amphitheatre of Grantez.

Nestled in the north of St. Ouen’s Bay, you’ll discover one of Jersey’s hidden gems - La Saline. Walk the breadth of the five mile beach feeling the sand beneath your feet and settle down for an evening BBQ. Watch surfers catch the last waves of the day before the sun disappears into

the Atlantic Ocean. Set yourself up for the evening with a BBQ and a bottle of wine. Make like a local and head down to Faulkner Fisheries only a short distance off at L’Etacq. Take your pick from the latest catch and keep it simple with a baguette and some delicious Jersey butter. Just remember a blanket to snuggle under!

La Saline

La Corbière

Spend a day exploring Jersey’s southern coastline and the charm of harbourside St. Aubin before heading up the gentle incline of the Railway Walk to La Corbière Lighthouse. Discover Jersey’s past and the remains of the railway’s trackbed last used during the Occupation with its bridges, embankments and cuttings. As you reach the peak of the island’s extreme south-western point, relax and enjoy a well-deserved sundowner at Corbière Phare. Watch the waves encircle the lighthouse tower, as the tide rises, and enjoy panoramic views across St. Ouen’s Bay.

Seymour Tower

As night descends, star like shapes of luminous green twinkle and sparkle in a few special coastal spots at low tide, illuminating the seabed at your feet. In the night sky, stars twinkle above you as you wander away from the shore line to the sea line towards Seymour Tower. As you walk to return to shore, and the tide turns to circle the coast, the sea will submerge Jersey’s coastal landscapes and wash away your footprints. Fliquet

For those early birds, there’s nothing more revitalising than seeing a Jersey sunrise. Located in the eastern corner of Jersey’s coastline, enjoy panoramic views from Fliquet Bay just north of St. Catherine’s Breakwater. A tranquil and picturesque bay where, on a clear day, it is possible to

see France. For those up for a taste of adventure, with the sea on your doorstep, stay overnight at the nearby Archirondel Tower which provides a perfect base from which to explore the island's eastern side. Just don’t forget your flask of tea for your early morning cuppa!

It may be winter,

but it’s always swimming season. Sea swimming seems to have increased in popularity over the last few years. Maybe it was the limitation of covid lockdown fitness options, a collective desire to be more ‘Wim Hof’ or just the love of hanging with friends in Dryrobes drinking hot chocolate while your body thaws back to normality after a bracing dip.

In Jersey you’re never more than ten minutes from the sea so you’ll always see people in the water, regardless of season. If you don’t fancy the adrenalin

rushes of surfing, kiting or foiling, grab a group of friends and venture into the sea, step by step, and visit our beaches for a spot of cold water swimming. Sea swimming boosts your immune system, promotes a natural ‘high’, improves circulation, burns calories and reduces stress. It can also help improve anxiety, dementia and depression. As a social activity, it galvanises a comradery amongst those that brave the water, particularly over the winter months.

1. St. Ouen’s Bay. The biggest beach and the biggest waves. Take it easy and be careful of the tide. Be aware of rip tides if you’re swimming behind the break.

4. Belcroute A lesser-known bay for quiet dips out west with a gentle sloping descent into the water.

If you fancy joining the throngs of groups like the ‘Cheeky Dippers’ or ‘Blue Tits’, make sure you do your research, take it easy and try one of these beaches;

5. Havre de Pas Bathing Pool A great sea pool with steps into the water and guaranteed easy swimming, regardless of tide. Quick access from town hotels. 6. Bouley Bay The home of scuba diving in Jersey makes for a great swim.

2. Grève de Lecq A characterful and cosy bay on the north coast for gentle a swim with a dramatic backdrop of coastal cliffs. 3. Hide in a castle!

If the weather is wet, but you like to make a splash, head for the woods. Our favourite is St. Catherine’s Woods, a winding route that takes you along a great sheltered pathway next to the water. Pick a good stick, slide down a bank and, if you’re lucky, someone will have installed the rope swing for some extra ‘wheeeee’. See page 81.

Our castles are fun for all and kids of all ages will love playing knights and princesses. If you head to Mont Orgueil Castle, your little ones can get fully immersed and style themselves as royalty of old with the help of the free dressing-up room. There’s also a little play park within the battlements. See page 72.

The tours begin with a gentle stroll through the vines and apple orchard followed by a visit to the new winery where the wine making process is demonstrated by a team of in-house experts. Then a visit to the stunning Cognac style distillery followed by a tasting of La Mare’s Jersey Wines and Jersey Apple Brandy Cream Liqueur. Weather permitting, they like to host the tastings outside on the main lawn, near the house. You can also experience their food production kitchens where La Mare makes their genuine Jersey fudge, biscuits and preserves, including the famous Jersey Black butter. Cycling is the perfect way to enjoy the best of Jersey’s countryside, 48 miles of nature-lined Green Lanes trail past lush green fields where the famous Jersey Cows graze with their calves and trees burst into life as Spring arrives, forming green leafy tunnels to cruise through. There are a number of signposted cycle routes of varying lengths and difficulty that crisscross the island. The number 3 trail is a 14.5 mile (23k) route along the length of the island which passes through a few different country parishes. For a shorter route, follow the signposts for the number 4 route, a 5 mile (8km) trail that heads right into the centre of the island and the rural parish of St. John, passing Tesson Mill, The War Tunnels and National Trust property Morel Farm.

With seasonal produce in mind, foodies who can make the most of the road-side honesty boxes dotted all over the island. They offer the very best of local fresh produce and hand made treats. Make sure you look out for freshly dug Jersey Royal potatoes. Or pick a route that culminates at one of Jersey’s traditional country pubs and let someone else do the cooking, not forgetting to enjoy a creamy Jersey ice cream along the way!

Travelling to Jersey with the family for the Easter holidays? Jersey Bike Hire has various children’s bikes and helmets available, as well as trailers and tag along bikes. For any slightly wobbly budding cyclists, there are a number of safe cycle routes that are separate from the vehicle traffic. These include the leafy railway walk out to Corbiere lighthouse

I love exploring the new St. Peter’s Valley Route at the moment. Its track is set back under the trees and winds its way through the valley. On an island that is only nine miles by five, it always astounds me just how many incredible dining options we have, whatever the time of day. Here are just a handful of places to see you through breakfast, lunch and dinner during your visit this season. B REAK FAST

Breakfast is not only the most important meal of the day but also my favourite. Which means that I feel pretty confident I know of some of the best spots for breakfast, or brunching, on our little isle. Starting in St. Helier, there’s been quite the explosion of excellent brunch spots of late, Locke’s being just one of them. Here you’ll find excellent coffee and a small but mighty menu with dishes inspired by, and changing with, the seasons. They’re also quite the purveyor of excellently titled dishes too, Avo Good Day and the Notorious BLT being just two of their permanent fixtures.

Colleen’s Café

The only downside to the townie locations is they don’t open on Sundays, but this gives you the perfect excuse to hunt for a table with a view. Why not head over to Grève de Lecq, here you’ll find a multitude of places where you can enjoy food for most of the day, but my favourite has to be Colleen’s Café for their full English, delightful. It wouldn’t be a trip to the island without a visit to the Hungry Man in Rozel Bay, this brightly coloured beach hut is the perfect spot for an al fresco bacon butty or if you’re brave try the Double Decker Healthwrecker.

LUNCH If you’re heading to St. Ouen’s Bay then a drive along the Five Mile Road offers up three options; Le Braye, El Tico or Sands all have excellent views of the bay and great menus full of foodie delights. They serve food throughout the day too so why stop at just lunch! Nude Food Beach has an excellent menu of wholesome food and fantastic views of St. Aubin’s Bay, open for breakfast and lunch daily and dinner too Wednesday - Saturday. One more westie must-visit is Off the Rails on the cycle track to La Corbière, serving Wednesday to Sunday with an excellent tapas and pizza menu with a strong wine list.

If you’re looking for an afternoon of eating and entertainment, look out for many excellent afternoon tea options. Tides Restaurant, at the Somerville Hotel in St Aubin offer a fantastic (afternoon) tea with a view.

DINNER Your choices for dinner are almost endless. Head out east to Gorey where amongst the countless dining options you’ll find Sumas and their all-weather balcony which offers you sweeping vistas of the castle and superb food. St. Aubin has an abundance of restaurants too, many of them along the Bulwarks overlooking the boats in the harbour. The Anchor Club offers up slightly more formal dining and the The Salty Dog, where you can enjoy excellent seafood right beside the water.

St. Helier is home to several fantastic fine dining restaurants. Try Samphire, where you’ll find a menu full of island influences and the best Côte de Beouf you’re likely to try, ever (in my opinion). Or head to Bohemia where I dare you to choose their six-course Michelin-starred surprise dinner menu, which changes daily and is available Monday to Thursday, it promises to tantalise your taste buds and delight your senses. A recent addition to the scene is ‘Pêtchi, by Joe Baker, who was a finalist on The Great British Menu. All three of these town-based restaurants also have excellent bar areas should you wish to have an aperitif before you dine.

Whether you’re looking for a big night out or a quick last order, St. Helier serves up a great selection of nighttime haunts; from Blind Pigs to Porters’ Stores, Jersey have something for all. The Weighbridge is a good place to start. The dominant Royal Yacht Hotel has a variety of different drinking options available, whether it be outside sipping wine in their large al fresco area, squirrelled away in the Cabin bar (the last remaining part of the original historic building) or dancing the night away in their ‘Drift’ bar, there is something for everyone. Just over the road, The Square offers excellent food options and you can also drink there until 01:00. Across the cobbles of the Weighbridge, Just up the road from the Weighbridge on Hill Street is the expansive Chambers, which offers live music; a fusion of pub culture and bar atmosphere.

OUT OUT

If you fancy your nightlife a little more intimate. Tucked away behind Chambers is The Blind Pig, hidden down a back alley just around the corner (you can also get there through a little hidden door at the back of Chambers itself). One of our original speak-easy bars, it specialises in cocktails in a small but beautifully appointed room. Just a few turns away on Wharf Street, this year sees the addition of The Porter’s Store, which channels a 70s Americana vibe into its cocktail den. Just one more right turn, on Broad Street, you’ll find Vinifera, worth investigating for an early evening glass of wine from one of the island’s most experienced owner-sommeliers. They also offer a private table in the basement, bookable for groups to take wine with delicious food. If it’s wine time, you should carry on across town where you’ll find the newly opened The Watchmaker, a chic ‘wine, Champagne and charcutie’ bar. A stone’s throw away down a cobbled backalley is the clandestine Project 52, Once you’ve found the location you need to look for the buzzer and ring for entry. Open 17:00 - 23:00 from Wednesday to Saturday you can expect excellently blended cocktails, craft beers and a superb selection of gins and a nifty wine list too for a cosy affair of an evening. If you’re looking for some pre-dinner drinks, the bar at Samphire and their upstairs terrace (open weather-permitting). The location provides the perfect oasis away from the hustle and bustle of the high street. If you like the vibe of a premium hotel bar then don’t miss the cool calm of the Bohemia Bar and Roof Terrace at The Club Hotel and Spa on Green Street. The timeless elegance of the bar is matched by a cool calm, great drinks and the chance to be on-hand for dinner at our fabulous Michelin-starred restaurant.

During the American Wars of Independence, two attempted invasions of the island were made. In 1779, the Prince of Orange William V was prevented from landing at St. Ouen’s Bay and on 06 January 1781 a force led by Baron de Rullecourt captured St. Helier in a daring dawn raid, but was defeated by a British

army led by Major Francis Peirson in the Battle of Jersey. Jersey was the fourth-largest ship building area in the 19th-century British Isles, building over 900 vessels around the island. Jersey was occupied by Nazi German troops between 1940 and 1945, with the Channel Islands being the only British soil occupied during World War II. This period of occupation saw about 8,000 islanders evacuated, 1,200 islanders deported to camps in Germany, and over 300 islanders sentenced to the prisons and concentration camps of mainland Europe. Be mindful that if you stray too far from the shore there could be a risk of tides cutting you off and leaving you stranded. Pay close attention to the signs and know the dangers. Decoding the dialect A local advises...

Whilst English is the most widely spoken language here in Jersey, if you find yourself interacting with some of the purest of locals you might notice a distinctive intonation that’s likely a remnant of our Norman roots despite sounding closer to a South African twang. They’re hard to find these days but they’re definitely out there, mostly hidden away in the rural parishes. I should know, I’m descended from them and occasionally find myself pronouncing an ‘arn’ sound as ‘on’ in a way that’d likely disgust the King. The example sentence above sums this up

relatively succinctly. If you find yourself talking to somebody who pronounces words like this there’s a good chance they’ll be able to give you reliable directions. Just make sure you’re pronouncing the place names properly. To give you a head start we’ve listed a few on the page to the right.
