“This is a must do on the island”
Each edition, we ask one of our islanders, who live and work in the island and symbolise local life, to introduce you to Jersey.
John Garton Director, Genuine Jersey
to our island.
Our island is a special place all year round, but while many people associate the island with sunny summer days, for me the cooler months offer an equally unique opportunity to discover what truly makes us a unique destination.
Our milder climate often lingers longer than on the mainland. Yet, no matter the weather, Jersey’s natural beauty and warm hospitality shine through. From breathtaking coastal walks to cosy pubs with roaring fires, and an abundance of unique treasures to take home, there’s something for everyone.
Of course, I might be a little biased, but I encourage you to look out for the Genuine Jersey mark when you’re shopping or dining out. This symbol of local provenance makes it easy to identify products that have been caught, reared, grown, or made here. With over 180 talented artisans and producers in the Genuine Jersey association, you’ll be spoiled for choice.
One of the most rewarding aspects of the Genuine Jersey Simply Christmas Markets is the opportunity to connect directly with the creators behind the products. As you wander through the stalls, you can chat with the local artisans who have spent countless hours perfecting their craft.
This personal connection not only enhances your shopping experience but also deepens your appreciation for the items you buy. When you gift a product from
a Genuine Jersey member, you’re not just giving a present; you’re sharing a piece of the island’s rich heritage and creativity. Whether it’s handmade jewellery, freshly made goods, or artisan sea salt, every stall has a story to tell.
Many of these producers will be showcasing their creations at our annual Christmas Markets in the Royal Square. Running every Thursday to Sunday from November 21 to December 8 this year, the markets are the perfect place to soak up the festive atmosphere. Meet the makers themselves, find unique gifts for friends and family, and maybe even warm up with a drink at the Cock and Bottle – one of Jersey’s many inviting pubs.
If you miss the markets, don’t worry. The island’s rich bounty of local produce and craftsmanship is available year-round. From roadside stalls brimming with fresh produce to fish vans offering the catch of the day, Jersey Dairy’s iconic milk and butter, or independent shops like The Trading Point in St. Lawrence, there’s always something special to discover.
Keeping it local is easy in Jersey, where the incredible quality of our home-grown and handmade goods speaks for itself.
Every piece beautifully embodies the elegance of lilies, blending classic design with a modern twist. A perfect choice for enthusiasts of natureinspired designs in their jewellery. Be among the first to adorn yourself with this exquisite floral masterpiece.

Where are you?
You’re on our beautiful little island in the English Channel but you’re a lot closer to France (around 14 miles at the closest point) than you are to England (closer to 100 miles). You’re surrounded by four other main Channel Islands; Guernsey, Alderney, Sark and Herm and a handful of smaller inhabited and uninhabited islands. Our nearest coastal towns in France are Granville and the historic port of Saint-Malo. The term “Channel Islands” began to be used around 1830, possibly first by the Royal Navy as a collective name for the islands.
Since the last census in 2021 it’s estimated that our population has grown to around 103,267. You’ll find most of us in and around St. Helier leaving most of the northern, easterly and westerly parishes unspoilt and rural in nature. Roughly 50% of Jersey dwellers on the last census were locally born with 29% from the UK, 8% from Portugal/Madeira, 3% from Poland, 3% from Ireland, 1% from France and the rest from elsewhere.
Pounds Sterling is the legal tender but we also have our own banknotes and coins which are classed as accepted tender elsewhere in the UK, people can take it, but they don’t have to - so don’t forget to spend your last few pound notes on souvenirs before you leave. If you forget though, a pound note also makes a great souvenir. Also, if you hold one of our bank notes up to the light you’ll not see a British king or queen in the hologram but the image of one of our own royalty.
If you arrive by air you’ll be in the west of the island. Served by buses and taxis for onward travel right outside the arrivals hall, hire car services are also available inside the arrivals hall. Foreign exchange and postal services, including posting excess baggage are available in the departures hall.
+44 (0) 1534 446000 | www.jerseyairport.com
If you’re wearing your sea legs, you’ll have arrived in St. Helier, Jersey’s capital. Taxis are available outside the arrivals hall although central St. Helier is only a short walk away. Scheduled ferries operate between the Channel Islands, England and France and for those with their own boat Jersey Marinas offer a whole host of services for which they’ve earned ‘5 Gold Anchor’ status, an internationally recognised accolade.

Buses operate throughout the island to and from Liberation Station in St. Helier. All buses are low floor, so they are all fully accessible for wheelchair users, pushchairs, prams and some smaller mobility scooters (with a permit). Low-floor buses also help those who have other mobility requirements. All our buses have easy-access ramps and a dedicated wheelchair space. A quick reference map of bus routes is overleaf.
Liberty Bus +44 (0) 1534 828555 | www.libertybus.je
There are taxi ranks at the airport, harbour and around St. Helier. Different tariffs apply depending on time of day and day of the week. Payment in cash used to be preferred, but all taxis are now required to accept cards. Private hire cabs are also available to hire if you’re not near a taxi rank. EVie electric cars can be unlocked and hired with the EVie app.

If you get lost, it’s worth bearing in mind that most locals won’t know where the A6 or B12 roads are, because all of our roads bear their own names in addition to these classifications. Your best bet? Point on a map or tell someone where you’re trying to get to! If you’re renting a car you’ll notice that the registration plate bears a white ‘H’ on a red background which denotes it as a hired vehicle. You’d best not flag down one of these for directions as they’re probably lost too. Like the United Kingdom, we drive on the left hand side of the road and all speed limits are posted in mph.
The maximum permissable speed limit anywhere is 40mph, with a large number of 30mph and 20mph zones. In the rural parishes you may also notice signs denoting ‘Green Lanes’ where the maximum speed limit is 15mph and right of way is given to those walking, cycling or riding horses. You’re also likely to come across a local driving phenomenon known as filter in turn. As you approach one, priority is given to traffic on your right. After they’ve made their move it’s your turn and traffic on your left will yield to you. It’s a great way to keep traffic flowing and once you see it in action it’ll all make sense. The mini roundabout at the bottom of Beaumont Hill is a prime example. Don’t panic, you’ll be fine!
On street parking requires the use of either a yellow disc or Paycard (available from convenience stores and hire car pick up points) to be displayed inside the car as signposted. PayByPhone parking is a cashless parking service that allows you to pay for parking using your mobile phone. It is available in all paying public car parks. Search the Apple or Android app store for ‘PayByPhone’.
Multi-storey car parks also require Paycards with the exception of the Sand Street and underground Waterfront car parks which have ticket machines that accept both cash and cards as payment.
Parking on yellow lines is prohibited at all times.
Where there’s a wheel, there’s a way!
Enjoying Jersey’s breathtaking beaches is an experience that should be available to all. The soft sand between your toes, the smell of sea salt in the air, and not to mention sunny beach days spent with loved ones and friends.
BeachAbility’s mission is to make that a reality. They offers specially adapted wheelchairs designed to glide over sand and stone with ease. All our wheelchairs are available for loan, free of charge, at 7 Jersey beaches to anyone with permanent or temporary mobility complications.
Their Le Braye site, which was relocated to the Healing Waves Surf Therapy Centre in August 2022, offers an additional ‘Changing Place’ for users to transfer into the beach wheelchairs using a hoist, take a shower, and change in private. A similar facility is also available at Churchill Memorial Park which is one of their most popular locations. These two sites also house a Hippocamp chair which has proven popular among their younger wheelchair users. The Hippocamp chair races across the sand and skims along the water’s edge. A priceless experience all children should enjoy!
BeachAbility are also looking for volunteers either to help us on the committee or to ‘meet and greet’ new people who would like to use the
chairs. If you feel you have a bit of spare time, then do get in touch. It is a very rewarding experience talking to someone who has not been able to go on the beach for years, (as their chair sinks in the sand) but in one of BeachAbility’s chairs, users can not only access the beach but also dip their toes in the sea!
For more information get in touch.
For those who wish to make regular use of our chairs, BeachAbility offers Regular User Training. If you are interested, please enquire when booking. They can’t wait to see you at the beach this summer!

Visit the island in December and you’ll feel the warmth of a community that loves to share the magic of Christmas in Jersey.
Feel the joy of the season as you wander the Jersey Christmas markets that pop up in St. Helier and around the island, as locals and visiting French traders set up stalls full of tempting delights. Soak up the festive atmosphere at many magical island events; our Jersey on Ice rink will be back in the Weighbridge and is here right through until the 23rd February. Look out for the Santa Dash on the 2nd and 3rd December and even an Afternoon Tea with Santa. Escape the hustle and bustle and hide out in a cosy pub with a warming mulled wine and mince pie. Or simply enjoy a long, lazy Christmas lunch at one of Jersey’s many fabulous restaurants, offering local seasonal produce wrapped up in a traditional Christmas way. Whether you’re a seasoned visitor or this is your first time experiencing Christmas in Jersey, you’re in for a festive treat!
Christmas markets.
Step into (simply) Christmas as you wander the stalls of the Genuine Jersey Simply Christmas Market where The Royal Square in St. Helier is transformed into a vibrant and colourful hub with live music, over 50 stalls showcasing Jersey’s finest artisans and local food and drink. It’s open on the 1 December and from 5-8 December. Say ‘Joyeux Noël’ at the Norman-French Market, where you’ll find the finest fancies from our French neighbours with the Maison de la Normandie et de la Manche Norman Market from the 9-15th December. From crepes to cider, saucisson to soap, come and say ‘Bonjour’ and ‘Joyeux Noël!’ Or, get festive at our historic Victorian Central Market – when the tinsel is hung and the string lights are twinkling, it shines at its brightest.
If you’re planning to spend a good chunk of time on the island throughout December, there are a host of events to entertain the whole family during your Jersey Christmas break. From Christmas concerts at Heritage properties to Jersey Premier Brass production of The Snowman. There’s also the Jersey Christmas Carol at The Jersey Museum. If you’re feeling crafty, you can attend a candle-making workship, a needle felting workshop or go with the classic Christmas wreath; all are available. See them all in the events section.
Celebrate the most wonderful time of the year with a hearty dose of festive feasting and yuletide tipples during your Christmas break in Jersey. As the holiday season descends upon our charming island, so does the spirit of merriment and culinary delight. Tuck into a fabulous festive feast at one of our island’s restaurants. With the Christmas decorations up and groups of friends and family gathered to enjoy the magic of the season, it’s a special time to dine out in Jersey. From traditional Christmas dinners served in cosy country pubs to warming mulled wine and delicious mince pies at many merry gatherings, Scandi-inspired winter domes and beachside bars offering festive cocktails with a view, there’s something to suit every festive occasion. Did you know that Jersey is an
Geoparks are outstanding places around the world that celebrate the links between people and the earth. Jersey is a strong contender for this special designation because of our island’s exceptional geology and unique cultural heritage which forms the breathtaking surroundings we enjoy every day.
As an ‘Aspiring Geopark’, Jersey is on track to achieving the special designation of a ‘Geopark.’ Explore Jersey’s diverse landscapes, uncover our unique heritage and be inspired by our remarkable seascapes – it’s all waiting to be discovered in our Aspiring Geopark.
A Geopark is about more than rocks. Each one is unique and tells the whole story of an area, right from the very beginning. There are 195 UNESCO Global Geoparks in 48 countries around the world. United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) seeks to build peace through international cooperation in Education, the Sciences and Culture. The UNESCO Global Geoparks celebrate the links between people
and the Earth. Jersey hopes to be recognised as a unique place by being awarded Geopark status.
The Aspiring Jersey Geopark Visitor Centre at Jersey Museum introduces the story of Jersey’s geological heritage and is the island hub for information on exploring Jersey to see first-hand how geology has shaped and influenced the Island we know today.
Explore the parts of the Aspiring Geopark that lie offshore. From an exhilarating RIB ride, to a lobster picnic and glass of champagne on a deserted beach to dolphin spotting – there is a Seafari for everyone. Jersey Seafaris, Island RIB Voyages, Le Mourier Marine and Nauti Buoy RIBs provide regular boat trips, tours and private charters around the beautiful coastline and offshore reefs: Les Écréhous and Les Minquiers, giving you the chance to experience one of the biggest tidal ranges in the world, discover secret sandbanks and hidden wonders around every corner. See activity operators in our ‘do’ and ‘tours’ sections
Walking.
Jersey’s cliff-edged heights and wide sandy bays are best seen on foot, with a breeze to keep you cool. You’ll find an extensive network of footpaths as well as winding country lanes, and breathtaking beaches. Walking is a great way to explore the outdoors allowing us to wander through Jersey’s spectacular landscapes, enjoying this Aspiring Geopark’s natural and built heritage.
See walking tours on page 78
Explore the Aspiring Jersey Island Geopark on two wheels, with a network of 15 mph ‘Green Lanes’ through the island’s countryside and miles of bicycle-friendly routes, a cycle ride is the perfect way to explore our unique island. Enjoy taking in the sights from the slow lane or challenge yourself with an uphill climb. We may be small, but we pack many diverse, beautiful and challenging cycle routes into our nine miles by five. You’ll be spoilt for choice for bike hire in Jersey, you’ll find mountain, leisure and road bikes and e-bikes if you’re looking for a little assistance.
Jersey’s shallow marine habitats offer an opportunity to explore the beauty and diversity that lies beneath the waves through the creation of snorkel trails at Portelet Bay and Bouley Bay. Portelet Bay boasts an element of isolation from the island, forming its own little oasis. A small islet located in the middle of the bay, Janvrin’s Tomb (or Île au Guerdain), is surrounded by water at high tide. Bouley Bay has long been the spiritual home of diving on the island and the trail there showcasing a range of habitats as well as a reef of kelp and seaweed stretching across the bay alongside a sandy seabed.
Geopark Ambassadors are Jersey locals who champion our unique landscapes and seascapes through their roles within our community and their passion for island life. Each Ambassador was asked about what makes this island such a remarkable place…

The Jersey sub species of buff-tailed bumblebee, despite the name, does not have a buff tail. It is also known as the Jersey white-tailed bumblebee. This bumblebee is a native pollinator to Jersey and can have active nests over winter. They nest underground often using small mammal holes with up to 500 workers in a nest. They can be found all over the Island, from gardens to sites of scientific interest.

“My favourite geology is La Crête point which is on the east coast, north side of Anne Port Bay which is an outcrop of columnar joints of lava flow called rhyolite”.
Researcher, in affiliation with the University of Plymouth and Blue Marine Foundation. Favourite of Jersey’s marine life: Tope. “Tope is a species of shark found in our waters. They are on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species as they are being unsustainably fished in other parts of the world.” Tope can be found at Les Minquiers, one of our offshore reefs, which boasts hundreds of granite fangs, wildlife, geology and archaeology.
Our beaches aren’t just for summer. Even on a brisk winter morning, our beautiful beaches are the perfect place to breathe in the fresh sea air. They each have their own unique personality. Over the following pages we highlight beaches and places you might want to stop for a coffee or snack! It might be worth calling ahead to check opening times in winter months, as some close on certain days.
A quiet and rarely crowded east-facing stretch of sand that catches the morning and midday sun. 2
This popular beach with an excellent beach cafe is pebbly at first but sandy at low tide when the water stays shallow for some way out. East-facing, Archirondel loses the sun in the late afternoon. 2
A winding hill leads down to this steep pebble beach with deep water for competent swimmers. The bay is home to one of Jersey’s scuba-diving schools. 4
A locals’ favourite, this sheltered south-facing beach is a real sun trap where soft sand, rock climbing and rock pool adventures await. The tide goes out a long way, so take care with the swift incoming tide and pick times close to high water to enjoy swimming or paddling. 1
The most popular of the north coast beaches, Grève de Lecq’s sheltered sands and rockpools are ideal for families but lose the sun in the late afternoon. Don’t miss the excellent cafés and local pubs close by. Even in the winter months, some providers offer coasteering trips for guided cold-water dips! 9
A real suntrap on the south coast, once you’ve wandered down the steep path from the car park and crossed the pebbles, you’ll reach a sheltered south-facing beach with golden sand and shallow turquoise water, ideal for swimming. 12a, 14 to St. Brelade’s Bay, then walk along the cliffs
A tiny fishing harbour with space to play on the sand, picnic or catch some sun, but more of a wild swim that some other beaches. Worth visiting for the excellent beach café. 4
Bay
A long stretch of sand that leads to Gorey harbour, with Mont Orgueil Castle as a backdrop. Plenty of parking, beach cafes and kiosks as well as a children’s beachside playground and soft sand make Long Beach a local favourite. 1a, 2
Ouaisné Bay SW
This south west facing beach is the wilder contrast to the adjoining St. Brelade’s Bay. The beaches are connected at low tide, or cross the pine-rich headland and walk along the sea wall next to the protected Ouaisné Common towards locals’ favourite, The Smugglers Inn. 12a Rozel Bay NE
Havre des Pas S
Close to the centre of St. Helier, this sandy beach is worth a visit to see the architecture of the art deco pool, filled by the tide each day. The beach is easy to access, and safe for swimmers. 1
A small fishing village lined with beach huts and harbourside cottages, Rozel is more of a fishing harbour than a place to swim. But at low tide, Rozel’s small stretch of white sand is safe for children to play, just look out for the Rozel geese! 3
A crescent of south-facing sand from St. Helier to St. Aubin, the beach is in full sun for most of the day. With several beach cafes along the promenade front, look out for the softest sand around the Gunsite Café with jet ski hire close by. 12a, 14, 15
The beautiful beach at St. Brelade’s Bay is one of the island’s busiest; a visitor favourite for its soft sand, safe swimming, beach activities and seaside eating. Voted as number three in the TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice awards, this stunning south-facing beach is in the sun for most of the day. 12a, 14
A pristine sandy cove reachable by a long flight of steps, where the intrepid are rewarded with a stunning natural playground of rock pools and sea caves. There’s safe swimming when the sea is calm, and surfing when it’s wild. The beach is completely covered at high tide. It’s quite a walk down from the bus stop so pack sensible footwear! 8
Climb down the long flight of steps and you’ll be rewarded with a sunny, sheltered and sandy beach circling Janvrin’s Tomb at the centre. Portelet Bay Beach Café serves excellent pizza throughout the season, and the pub at the top of the steps, the Old Portelet Inn is a family favourite. 12a
A magnificent beach and natural playground for surfers and adrenaline seekers. It’s where one of the oldest surfing clubs in Europe has its home and makes a stunning setting for beach walks. Swimmers should take care in the strong currents and stick to the flagged zones. The beach is patrolled by RNLI lifeguards during the season. 22
Most providers concentrate their focus on summer months but some offer on-demand tours throughout the winter season.

It may be winter, but it’s always swimming season.
Sea swimming seems to have increased in popularity over the last few years. Maybe it was the limitation of covid lockdown fitness options, a collective desire to be more ‘Wim Hof’ or just the love of hanging with friends in Dryrobes drinking hot chocolate while your body thaws back to normality after a bracing dip.
In Jersey you’re never more than ten minutes from the sea so you’ll always see people in the water, regardless of season. If you don’t fancy the adrenalin
rushes of surfing, kiting or foiling, grab a group of friends and venture into the sea, step by step, and visit our beaches for a spot of cold water swimming.
Sea swimming boosts your immune system, promotes a natural ‘high’, improves circulation, burns calories and reduces stress. It can also help improve anxiety, dementia and depression. As a social activity, it galvanises a comradery amongst those that brave the water, particularly over the winter months.
If you fancy joining the throngs of groups like the ‘Cheeky Dippers’ or ‘Blue Tits’, make sure you do your research, take it easy and try one of these beaches;
1. St. Ouen’s Bay.
The biggest beach and the biggest waves. Take it easy and be careful of the tide. Be aware of rip tides if you’re swimming behind the break.
2. Grève de Lecq
A characterful and cosy bay on the north coast for gentle a swim with a dramatic backdrop of coastal cliffs.
3. Archirondel
In the shadow of a traditional Martello tower, this sheltered cove is a secluded space with the benefit of a café close by to warm the cockles of one’s heart.
4. Belcroute
A lesser-known bay for quiet dips out west with a gentle sloping descent into the water.
5. Havre de Pas Bathing Pool
A great sea pool with steps into the water and guaranteed easy swimming, regardless of tide. Quick access from town hotels.
6. Bouley Bay
The home of scuba diving in Jersey makes for a great swim.
1. Be prepared. Check the winds and tidal situation.
2. Know your limits. Understand where safe waters / currents are.
3. Be prepared. Lots of dry clothing to put on afterwards.
4. Stay safe. Use a high-vis tow float, swim in groups or with a buddy.
5. Go easy. Beginners - don’t stay in too long!
Jersey excels at providing experiences on and around our coastal playground. Whilst the winter months restrict some actiivites, others are improved as wind blows kites and tides bring waves. Join a group of surfers, blokarters or SCUBA divers or simply climb the rocks or run the trails, taking in the distant views of France. The following activites happen on demand so if you’d like to join, cross reference the guide initials ( JWA) against the guide list overleaf.

If you’re visiting Jersey with the family you’ll be spoilt for choice with activities from all the activity providers mentioned over the previous few pages but there are also a few extra activities that your kids will particularly enjoy (and you too!). Many venues also organise events over half term but we don’t have full details at time of press. Be sure to give the attractions a call if you’re visiting them and ask!
Jump in some puddles
If the weather is wet, but you like to make a splash, head for the woods. Our favourite is St. Catherine’s Woods, a winding route that takes you along a great sheltered pathway next to the water. Pick a good stick, slide down a bank and, if you’re lucky, someone will have installed the rope swing for some extra ‘wheeeee’.

Maritime Museum
Interactive fun of a nautical nature
Based (as you would hope) near to the harbour, the Maritime Museum is a fun and educational morning or afternoon out with all manner of seafaring-baed entertainment. Learn about wave motion, pirates, knots and more. It’s a great insight into Jersey’s nautical past!

Our castles are fun for all and kids of all ages will love playing knights and princesses. If you head to Mont Orgueil Castle, your little ones can get fully immersed and style themselves as royalty of old with the help of the free dressing-up room. There’s also a little play park within the battlements.

Tire out those energetic legs!
Jump Jersey is an indoor trampoline park based at Les Ormes, Jersey’s holiday village. Within the former indoor football facility, you can now find a world of bouncing wonder with trampolines, Gladiator-style challenges and climbing walls. Suitable for all ages and complete with cafe for parents who aren’t feeling their trampoline legs.

Despite its small island charm, Jersey hosts more independent stores and boutiques than your average high street. You’ll find luxury goods and bespoke souvenirs from island brands enabling you to take home a memory of Jersey. Shopping for your favourite brands is even easier with the added benefit of VAT-free prices.
If you want it all under one roof, check out Voisins and de Gruchy department stores, the ‘Selfridges’ and ‘Harrods’ of Jersey, both located on the main shopping street of St. Helier; both have been developed in recent years to create a cutting edge environment behind the traditional facades. It’s worth a wander through each.
Jersey’s only covered shopping area, Liberty Wharf, offers an array of boutique stores in one place
and a great destination for locallyinspired gifts. If you want to take the taste of Jersey home with you, there’s nowhere better to pick up Genuine Jersey products, hampers and hand selected wines than Maison de Jersey on King Street.
Looking for something that sparkles? A visit to Jersey’s oldest jewellers, Hettich offers 117 years of experience and the same VATfree discounts on their world class brands from Cartier to Rolex and their exclusive diamond collection.
For another Jersey touch, keep it local at Rivoli Jewellers, their ‘Centre Ville’ silver collection is influenced by the castings on buildings, lamp posts and street furniture around King Street and the Central Market in Jersey. This local family run jewellers in the heart of St. Helier also features a large, Swiss style, revolving clock, that chimes playing music as it changes scene every hour to the delights of a gathered crowd.
If you’re seeking beautifully bespoke, Catherine Best makes for a designer day out. Browse their extensive showroom with many Genuine Jersey pieces on offer or watch the master jewellers create a bespoke piece to your own design in the open studio. Offering a completely unique jewellery journey, at Jersey Pearl you can enjoy guided talks or even experience picking your own oyster to discover the gem within. The skilled artisans can then string an incredible range of pieces by hand, made to your own design. Back in St. Helier, treat yourself to a piece of Swarovski jewellery or crystal piece at the STORY by Rivoli store or the unique local pieces at Jersey Gems, featuring locally-designed pearl and gemstone jewellery set with Jersey Granite, Jersey Ormer Shell and other gems sourced around our beautiful island.
Boutique shopping at its best all in strolling distance from one another (ideal for heavy bag laden arms). Visit Harriet and Rose for cool giftware on the highstreet. Further up the road, just as you pass the second turning to The Royal Square, you’ll find the relatively new Wild Atlantique that features a malange of items with coastal living vibe.
If you’ve a love for homeware and fashion at its most unique, The Loving Chair Company delivers luxury, colour and imaginative design in droves. There’s also plenty out of town shopping to enjoy. Number 1 in St. Aubin injects the quaint town with an eclectic dose of worldly trinkets, jewellery, bohemian clothing lines and more. The perfect addition to a day of harbour-side strolling.
Look out for the Genuine Jersey Mark for authentic island produce.
If you’re looking for some arts and crafts, head in to the Commercial Buildings or out east to Gorey Harbour to find Jane James Ceramics . If you’re out walking around the old harbour, head in to Commercial Buildings at the harbour to The Harbour Gallery. Exhibiting the work of over 100 local artists and craftworkers you can purchase handmade silver, printed canvases and landmark models as the perfect souvenir. If you’re into arts and crafts, check out Crafty Quilters on the outskirts of St. Helier on Upper Midvale road for a haven of haberdashery.

This original design by Lauren Radley is her own colourful interpretation of Vintage Travel and Railway Posters. Featuring a bold, hand illustrated scene of Jersey, the Channel Islands, this joyful tea towel would make a perfect gift or souvenir, and would brighten up any kitchen (warning - you may not want to use it to actually wash dishes!). Lauren also creates beautiful prints of beaches and bays around the island.
Jersey is famous worldwide for its breed of cow, superior quality milk and the prized Jersey Royal new potato but the island can also be proud of an abundance of fresh, seasonal produce and a variety of skilled craftsmen and artists who create a range of excellent products. To enjoy the best of what Jersey has to offer, islanders and visitors alike should look for the Genuine Jersey Mark – a guarantee of local provenance.
Products carrying the distinctive red Genuine Jersey mark include dairy goods, fruit and vegetables, herbs and salads, meat and poultry, fish and shellfish, pottery, wines, ciders, spirits and beers, jewellery, needlework, decorative stonework, wooden artefacts, glassware and artwork. Genuine Jersey produce and products can be bought in the main shopping centre in St. Helier and outlets islandwide – including galleries, studios, tourist attractions and heritage sites, farm shops and markets and sampled in restaurants, pubs, cafés and from ice cream stalls.
Pouring your milk from this handcrafted Jersey Milk Jug by local potter Karen Hibbs will provide you with a daily reminder of your visit to the island and of the milk from our prized herd. Karen also makes bowls for your Royals and other lovely hand thrown and hand built stoneware ceramics.

You can’t get much more Jersey than salt made from the sea water which surrounds the island. Made using traditional methods in their bespoke salt houses, they solar evaporate large quantities of sea water to make this excellent cooks ingredient. It comes in a variety of blends including lemon, pepper dulse and our favourite, chilli (perfect for the glass of a margarita!).
Genuine Jersey was launched in 2001 to promote the diversity and quality of local produce and products. Since the Association started it has attracted a loyal and enthusiastic membership. While some members ensure the survival of Jersey’s heritage and traditions others are at the forefront of introducing pioneering farming methods, new crops or exploring previously untapped international markets.

Maison de Jersey

Like everything from La Mare this is made in their inhouse kitchen. Despite the name Black Butter is actually a rich and spicy apple preserve that goes back hundreds of years. The island used to be full of apple orchards and cider was made by farmers to give to staff as part of their wages! People would then make Black Butter by boiling the cider over an open fire for up to two days and would then add apples, sugar, lemon, spices and a hint of liquorice while continuously stirring with a wooden ‘rabot’ or paddle. Use it on sweet or savoury dishes.
Assorted box of 25 mixed chocolates and pralines £30.
Pick up a box of some of possibly Jersey’s best chocolates, made by couple Glen and Constance, a team that combines the skills of a local pastry chef who has worked at Noma and a French pâtisserie professional. Visit their store at Castle Quay.
Jersey Skin £8
Jersey Skin offers a selection of moisturisers, lip balms, pillow mists, intense hand creams and much more, all containing ingredients grown on the island. You can buy Jersey Skin products directly from their shop on The Parade, St Helier or at various outlets around the island, including Jersey Airport.

On an island which houses little more than 120,000 people we may appear to be small but when it comes to our foodie offering we would consider ourselves pretty mighty. What follows are just a handful of our brilliant eateries, if you’re here for just a few days… we can assure you that you won’t go hungry!
Bus or taxi your mode of transport? Then we’d suggest heading into St Helier to start your culinary journey. Just a few minutes walk from Liberation Station you’ll find The Pavilion (if you’re lost ask someone to direct you towards the Flying Lady statue!). More of our excellent local produce can be found on their brunch based menu including dishes like their Jersey hot honey burrata or grab a homemade nduja sausage roll, which will be the size of your head.
A few streets away you’ll find Locke’s (where I’m sat writing this), a firm favourite with locals and visitors alike. If you’re there early doors you’ll be able to see a number of suppliers bringing their local produce directly to their doors. Their brunch menu features some OG favourites like the Notorious BLT and Friends with Benedicts and also includes some seasonally changing specials, they also serve an excellent Breakfast Martini and great coffee too.

If I was asked for my death row meal I’d want at least one of those courses to be a dish you’d find on a breakfast menu, for years we’ve been told it’s the most important meal of the day and who am I to disagree with Mr Kellogg’s. That said, whatever time of day it is, if you’re hopping straight off the plane and into a hire car head down to St Ouen’s (pronounced One!), the bay you possibly flew over, where you’ll find some cracking all-day dining spots with a view of the sea. Whether that’s El Tico, Le Braye or Sands, they all have excellent varied menus which feature plenty of local produce.

Just grabbing and going? Then get up to Dandy. With a counter heaving full of daily baked artisan goods and fantastic Allpress coffee you can’t go wrong. FOUR Bakery is another scratch bakery with an excellent team producing phenomenal sourdough viennoiserie and other baked goods.
Jersey’s Central Market is having somewhat of a revival and that means it’s offering some nighttime dining options on Friday and Saturdays. If they don’t work then you can enjoy both the La Bouche menu and Casa Paco’s delicious tapas and authentic Spanish fare at lunchtimes too.

If you’re looking for Asian inspired fare head to Phire to enjoy their all day dining menu or Awabi just a few streets away, both of them are in St Helier and offer fantastic food, wine lists and cocktails too.
If you’re heading out east then you’ve got a plethora of options in Gorey whether that be a leisurely lunch sipping wine and eating seafood at Sumas with a great view of the castle or enjoying the hospitality at The Moorings which sits on the harbour both are great. Or pop a little further round the coast to Archirondel to pay a visit to the Driftwood Café, where they’re serving a seafood inspired menu featuring the catch of its fishermen owners.
Pêtchi would be at the top of my list for dinner reservations, but reserve you must as it is a busy spot. If you, like me, are a foodie voyeur and love to see what the chefs are up to then get yourselves seated at the counter which overlooks the open kitchen and watch the magic happen. A regularly changing menu cooked on a wood-fired grill, using the best of seasonal produce and a cracking cocktail menu should tick a number of your foodie boxes. They’re open for lunch too.
Bohemia is our only restaurant with a Michelin star and well worth a visit for lunch or dinner. I’m a big fan of their surprise tasting menu as it offers you the chance to truly immerse yourself in the dining experience without knowing what’s coming next. Be sure to let them know if there’s anything you can’t eat or don’t like though!

The Salty Dog is about to take up residence in a new spot in St Aubin, same great Asian fusion food and fabulous service but a slightly different location which takes them even closer to the bus stop and means they’ll have the added luxury of a lot more outdoor space, perfect for those long summer evenings.
How about something to take home, or munch while you’re thinking about your next move? Please go and find Ganache at Castle Quay. Glen and Constance have brought the insane chocolatier and patisserie skills developed in France and the Middle East back to our tiny isle and we couldn’t be more delighted, we can’t be specific about what you should buy because we’d opt for one of everything if we could! We have so much to offer on our 9 by 5 and this really is the tip of the iceberg. Wherever you head have a fantastic time tasting your way around the island.

A little more local knowledge...
History
The earliest evidence of human activity in Jersey dates to about 250,000 years ago and it was only 6,000 years ago that Jersey was part of mainland Europe before rising tides cut us off and made us an island.
During the American Wars of Independence, two attempted invasions of the island were made. In 1779, the Prince of Orange William V was prevented from landing at St. Ouen’s Bay and on 06 January 1781 a force led by Baron de Rullecourt captured St. Helier in a daring dawn raid, but was defeated by a British
army led by Major Francis Peirson in the Battle of Jersey. Jersey was the fourth-largest ship building area in the 19th-century British Isles, building over 900 vessels around the island.
Jersey was occupied by Nazi German troops between 1940 and 1945, with the Channel Islands being the only British soil occupied during World War II. This period of occupation saw about 8,000 islanders evacuated, 1,200 islanders deported to camps in Germany, and over 300 islanders sentenced to the prisons and concentration camps of mainland Europe. Many islanders remained and
the island was liberated by British troops on 09 May 1945, now celebrated as a public holiday locally.
People
Mostly a mix of Norman French and British settlers, Jersey’s community has also been enriched by the influences of the number of Europeans who also call Jersey their home. If you hear anybody referring to a Crapaud (French for toad) or a Jersey Bean they’ll be talking about one of the natives.
The native language, which you’ll see displayed in a few locations around the island such as the airport and harbour is called Jèrriais but you’ll probably not hear it spoken unless you find yourself in the deepest, darkest of rural parishes such as St. Ouen, where 8% of parishioners speak it according to the results of a 2012 survey. English is the most widely spoken language.
Jersey and its neighbours Jersey has an interesting relationship with both the UK and Europe in that it’s a Crown Dependency, meaning that despite having our own independent government, locals answer to the King and the British military support our interests should the need arise. Despite being part of the British Isles, Jersey is not part of the United Kingdom. We’re also not part of the European Union but are a member of the EEC. Confused? You’ll fit right in!
In addition to the States of Jersey Police force, who serve islandwide, each of Jersey’s twelve parishes has its own police service that only have jurisdiction within the boundaries of their own

parish, also known as the Honorary Police, who are headquartered at each of the parish halls.
The local economy thrives from a combination of offshore finance, tourism, digital and agriculture. Bathe at our beaches, enjoy our local attractions, dine on our fresh produce including world famous potatoes and dairy products from the herds of local Jersey cows.
Jersey’s tidal range is one of the largest in the world with a range of around 12 metres. We’ve also got some of the cleanest water in the British Isles, which is a winning combination when it comes to keeping our beaches great. It’s worth noting that because of the huge tidal range that the sea level does rise quickly and it’s easy to get caught out. Be mindful that if you stray too far from the shore there could be a risk of tides cutting you off and leaving you stranded. Pay close attention to the signs and know the dangers.
The RNLI have lifeguards stationed at popular bays who provide cover between the red and yelow flags. For more information: www.rnlijersey.org.je
IF YOU’RE LOOKING FOR A PLACE IN JERSEY, ALL YOU NEED IS PLACES.
This is Grosnez Castle in St. Ouen, but you can call it ‘grow-nay castle’ (oh, and it’s in ‘saint one’)
A local advises...
Whilst English is the most widely spoken language here in Jersey, if you find yourself interacting with some of the purest of locals you might notice a distinctive intonation that’s likely a remnant of our Norman roots despite sounding closer to a South African twang.
They’re hard to find these days but they’re definitely out there, mostly hidden away in the rural parishes. I should know, I’m descended from them and occasionally find myself pronouncing an ‘arn’ sound as ‘on’ in a way that’d likely disgust the King. The example sentence above sums this up
relatively succinctly. If you find yourself talking to somebody who pronounces words like this there’s a good chance they’ll be able to give you reliable directions. Just make sure you’re pronouncing the place names properly. To give you a head start we’ve listed a few on the page to the right.
Where are you heading?
Here are a few commonly mispronounced place names and how to say them so that nobody stares at you in complete and utter bewilderment. Good luck!
