‘33 Hot Rod How We Came to Build a Hot Rod Ten years ago I swore we would never build a Hot Rod. The ones I had seen were beautiful machines whose handling and performance were a big disappointment. Our focus at Factory Five has always been to use modern engineering to build cars that perform as good as they look. The idea of building a traditional replica of a 1930s Ford was an inherent conflict. The original frame, chassis, and suspension designs that make up the bulk of what is sold today are not really capable of delivering sports car performance and ride quality. In the October 2004 issue of Hot Rod Magazine, then editor David Freiburger asked illustrator Thom Taylor to pen the lines for what he envisioned as the future of hot rodding in the form of a “race rod”. He dreamed of a “glass body on a full-tube chassis with a gen 3 aluminum V-8 at 2,400 lbs...imagine the violence,” he would later write. When Jim Schenck, our director of R&D, came to me with his ideas for a next generation Hot Rod I was immediately impressed. The idea of making a high performance and comfortable daily driver '33 was exciting and that race rod sketch immediately came to mind. Jim’s ideas weren't limited to just designing a performance Hot Rod. His excellent understanding of the Hot Rod market enabled him to see where there were opportunities for a “leap-frog” product. Today, most Hot Rods are looks first and everything else a distant second. In addition to performance that leaves something to be desired, most guys are forced to cobble together parts from a wide variety of companies and sources. Jim pitched me on the idea of using the Factory Five product template on the Hot Rod. The idea was to stay as traditional as possible, but make performance and drivability the focus AND package all the parts together to reduce the number of places a guy has to go. It made a lot of sense. We introduced the Factory Five ‘33 at the November 2008 SEMA Show where it earned “Best in Show - Hot Rod” and “Best Engineered Product - Runner-Up”. In 2012, the car won the GoodGuys National Autocross title in both Pro and Street classes. In its short life, the car has earned a slew of awards and industry recognition. The car has changed the way people think about the “stereo-typical” version of a Hot Rod. We did the same thing with our revolutionary AC replica more than 15 years ago....here we go again.

HOT ROD PREDICTION “With musclecars taking off so big right now, it will be a while before 48and-olders are the fresh buzz. But when that happens, it will be with a new crowd and a new look. Our race-rod concept probably ain’t it, but the street rod genre must evolve or die.” David Freiburger Editor

‘33 Hot Rod Design Hot Rod Evolution. By Jim Schenck The most important thing to understand is that from the very beginning of this project, I didn’t want to compromise what we, Factory Five, do with cars in building this Hot Rod. What I mean is that when you design a car like this, it LOOKS fast… but it's a big disappointment if it’s not. I really wanted to build a sports car that's about performance and driving fun as much as it is about looks. Truthfully that’s where the original Hot Rods started out. Guys who wanted to make their cars faster than the other guys. In that sense I think what we have done with this design is faithful to the original cars and Hot Rodding culture. Apart from the driving focus, we gave a lot of consideration to customization. Not only should a Hot Rod be fast but it should be a platform from which guys can build their cars in a variety of ways to make their own expression, and even change it once it has been built. The removable hard top/slide-in-windshield, removable side engine covers, and removable fenders, among other things, were designed with customization in mind. I'm proud of this car. As the design chief, I feel that the car benefits from our company’s talents in engineering and performance, while at the same time continues the legacy of American Hot Rods in a new and exciting way. Hot Rod Magazine’s David Freiburger’s prediction came true in 2012 when the Factory Five ‘33 built by the crew at Ridetech Shocks won GoodGuys National autocross championship in pro AND street classes.
‘33 Hot Rod Manufacturing The Most American of Cars Made in America The new Factory Five ‘33 Hot Rod may have been born on on the computer, but it is made by American labor right here in the USA. While our talented staff of mechanical engineers uses advanced computer CAD designs up front, our manufacturing team finishes the job by using the right materials, tools and training to build a better part. Not only does Factory Five lead the component car industry in engineering, we set the bar just as high in manufacturing.
Precision laser-cut aluminum chassis panels are hand formed and fit to each frame. Composite bodies are mounted by hand in the chassis assembly dept.
In 2009, we were awarded the Good Manufacturing Practices Award from the Association of Hand-built Automobiles.
Our RPT Technologies welding robot adds consistency and accuracy to our component welding group.
Hot Rod Magazine Five-Day Hot Rod Build The Factory Five ‘33 Hot Rod was featured in a three-part build series in Hot Rod Magazine where the car was built in five days by a group of customers and magazine staff. Shortly after building the car, editor Rob Kinnan took the car on the Hot Rod Power Tour and competed with it in the GoodGuys Nationals Autocross in Columbus, OH. You can read the complete article series on our website. Here’s what they said: "Looks like a Hot Rod, but handles like an Indy Car” "No lying, it took only five days on this one AND the best part is, you can have fun with a group of buddies while doing it. Next month, we put the finished car to the test, but we'll tease you a little here - it's really fast." "Pro-touring can kiss our butt. The Race Rod is all business with the orange cones." "...the car burned up the short autocross course with a time of 31.36 seconds... quicker than all the Street Machine of the Year contenders.”

‘33 Hot Rod Frame
Our welded parts are made in the USA with American labor.
A ‘33 Chassis Like No Other Under our classic ‘33 body is a frame like no other. Once we accepted that we could not make an original style frame strong enough to meet the demands of a performance sports car, we made the decision to design an all-new, completely modern, extremely rigid, and yet aesthetically pleasing, tubular steel space-frame. The ultra-rigid frame is made of mig-welded, high strength carbon steel tubing and plate steel. This unique design delivers great torsional rigidity, increased cockpit space, and numerous safety features.
Single full-width removable roll bar can be used with roadster or hardtop. Made from 11/2“ OD, .120” wall DOM tubing.
Safety designed collapsible steering column and bolt-on mounts for Wilwood pedal box.
Each frame is finish welded by hand, but supported by CAD designed tooling, high quality materials, and CNC robotics. The CAD/CAM based jigs are built with laser-cut tooling steel and hold parts to a high level of accuracy. What this means to you is that all of your running gear and accessories will bolt right into place like they should.
High performance cantilever style in-board KONI™ mono-tube coil-over shocks and tubular front suspension control arms are standard.
CAD designed tubular steel frame with backbone delivers tremendous torsional rigidity AND a low vehicle weight. The welded assembly weighs only 275 lbs. total!
4
The vehicle/chassis is 3” wider than the original car. This makes more space in the cockpit. The rearward and low engine placement delivers low center of gravity and optimum front/rear weight distribution.
The Factory Five ‘33 frame is computer designed on Solidworks™ software ®
using Hewlett Packard workstations.
®
Hood, doors, and trunk all mount directly to the steel frame, not the body shell. Doors are authentic rearhinged “suicide door” design.
Bolt-on engine mounts and adjustable transmission mounts for T-5, TKO, T56, AOD and other transmissions standard.
Side impact protection, DOT door latches, tubular steel door frames, and welded driveshaft safety hoops are some of the safety features built into the ‘33 frame.
Elegant truss-style round tube design is visable when the car is used without engine side covers.

‘33 Hot Rod Running Gear Bolt-in Your Engine, Transmission, and Rear End The Factory Five '33 Hot Rod is designed to use small block V-8 power, a wide range of transmissions, and a solid axle Ford rear end. Included in the Hot Rod package are the engine mounts, driveshaft, side exit exhaust, mufflers, and straight tubes with fasteners required to match up to the factory or aftermarket shorty headers. All these parts make installing your running gear easy.
Engine The '33 Hot Rod is set up to use either Ford or Chevy engines. Choose from small block Ford 289/302, 351, 4.6L 4V engines. and the new 5.0L Coyote or the Chevy small block and GM LS series of engines.
The strong Factory Five '33 frame is complimented by a modern race proven suspension and massive brakes. Roll bar is removable and also fits under the removable hard top.
Transmission Transmissions that can be used include the T-5 (Ford or GM), T56 (Ford or GM), 3550/TKO, 3650, TH350, C4, C6, AOD, 2004R, 700R4, 4L60E, and the TH400. When you order your Hot Rod, you will select the correct spline driveshaft for your transmission. You can also choose an automatic or manual transmission tunnel (manual transmission tunnel is narrower).
Rear End The car is designed to use a bolt-on Ford 8.8” solid-axle rear-end. You may also install a Ford 9” rear end if it has the 8.8” Mustang suspension mounts added.

‘33 Hot Rod Suspension & Brakes Making a Hot Rod Drive like a Supercar The goal of making a modern Hot Rod handle like a well-balanced sports car required more than a well-designed and rigid frame. On the shoulders of our revolutionary '33 frame, we placed a state-of-the-art suspension, precise steering, competent brakes, and engineered the vehicle to have a lower center of gravity and excellent front/rear weight distribution. Our engineering team developed an all-new front suspension design and joined it with the proven rear suspension from our Challenge Series race cars. This new suspension configuration successfully delivers a combination of comfortable ride and superior performance. The tublar control arms are exposed outside of the body while the KONI™ brand cantilever shocks ride inboard and deliver excellent damping. The Factory Five '33 won the 2012 GoodGuys National Autocross Championship.
Front Suspension The front suspension is an in-board coil-over design with elegant, yet strong, unequal length upper and lower tubular a-arms and high-end mono-tube adjustable coil-over rod-end dampers. Our rugged front suspension delivers superior handling without the compromises of Mustang II style set-ups and it tells the world that this car does more than go in a straight line. The hot rod is delivered with the entire front suspension, spindles, steering rack, brakes, and fasteners.
Rear Suspension Clearly visible from behind (which is where most drivers will see the car from) is the proven Factory Five 4-link (standard) or 3-link (optional) solid axle suspension with high-end KONI™ coil-over shocks and tubular control arms. The 3-link rear suspension was lifted directly from our Challenge Series Racers, cars that have proven themselves on the track for more than ten years. The Hot Rod is delivered to you ready to accept bolt-on suspension components. There are two (2) rear suspension configurations that can be used on the hot rod. The standard suspension is a Ford Mustang 4-link rear configuration. An optional 3-link performance suspension is available for use with 8.8" axle.
Steering/Brakes A high quality Unisteer™ rack and pinion manual steering rack is standard. Front brakes are standard 2000 Ford Mustang GT brakes with 11" rotors and aluminum two-piston PBR calipers. Rear brakes are optional since many people obtain rear ends with brake assemblies.

‘33 Hot Rod Interior & Trim Complete Interior, Gauges, and Trim Standard The complete interior is included with the ‘33 Hot Rod. We include seats, full driver and passenger Simpson brand seat harnesses, carpeting, gauge package, steering wheel and steering column, ignition and switches, shifter and shift boot, interior door handles, upholstered door panels, removable roll bar, and choice of manual or automatic transmission cover. Side windows, power mechanisms, and outside door handles are available with the optional hard top. The beauty of the ‘33 Hot Rod interior is based on its simplicity and functionality. The molded doors flow seamlessly into the trailing edge of the dash. The dash is integral to the body and comes with a complete array of vintage gauges. The rear cockpit bulk head and trim piece are also included.
The cool thing about the Factory Five ‘33 Hot Rod is that it can go from hard top-coupe to convertible roadster in about an hour. Unbolt the hard top, slide in the roadster windshield, and that’s it. Rear padded cover shown above is standard, covers rear mount area of hard top. Car shown with roll bar removed.

Hot Rod Magazine’s Rob Kinnan drops the hammer on the sinister black, 450 HP Factory Five ‘33 during a stop on the 2010 Hot Rod Power Tour. The car was featured on the cover of Hot Rod Magazine! Left: Customer Tony Zullo bought a Factory Five ‘33 in late 2009. Six months later, he won “Best in Show” at the 2010 New England Summer Nationals against cars costing four times as much.
Right: The crews at HorsePower TV and MuscleCar TV built a Factory Five ‘33 with Ford’s new 5.0L engine.
When we say the Factory Five Hot Rod is computer designed, we mean it. The ‘33 is used extensively in an official collegiate text book on SolidWorks and 3-D solid modeling.
This Factory Five ‘33 was selected as one of the Top 10 Cars of the 2011 SEMA Show by MSN.com and NASCAR driver David Ragan.
