UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM GUIDE
2013
ARCHITECTURE, LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE & URBAN DESIGN
ARCHITECTURE, LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE & URBAN DESIGN Architects, landscape architects and urban designers are critical professionals responding to pressing environmental, cultural, social and economic issues in the design and creation of our built environments. Built environments include the many forms of buildings, landscapes, streetscapes, parks and structures that comprise the places we live in and visit, both public and private. An ever-expanding body of imaginative, conceptual, technical and managerial skills are required to make positive and effective contributions to this important work.
The School’s postgraduate programs are accredited by the relevant professional body. The Master of Architecture is accredited by the Australian Institute of Architects and the Master of Landscape Architecture is accredited by the Australian Institute of Landscape Architecture. The planning degrees are accredited by the Planning Institute of Australia.
The School of Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Urban Design offers a three-year undergraduate degree—the Bachelor of Design Studies—as the recognised pathway leading to two-year, postgraduate degrees in architecture and landscape architecture. Urban design is integrated into these degrees. The School also offers postgraduates the opportunity to move to programs leading to Masters in planning, and planning for urban design, which may be applied for following successful completion of the Bachelor of Design Studies or another undergraduate degree.
At both undergraduate and postgraduate level, students will be engaged with a curriculum that engages with the evolving scope of practice, canons and traditions of these design disciplines. It will support this with teaching that grounds students’ critical thinking in knowledge of the technological, scientific and cultural factors that drive and define the problems that designers engage with, including climate change, demographic pressures, and energy and resource constraints. This will be explored through design studio projects, workshops, seminars, lectures and tutorials, where students learn how to consider new issues, pose questions and propose solutions.
“ Having graduated from this degree, I have a much better understanding of the role that good design plays in forming our future environment. Danny Brookes Bachelor of Design Studies

Diploma in
Languages Any student enrolled in an undergraduate program at the University can elect to study a language through the Diploma in Languages. You can start as a complete beginner or with more advanced knowledge, and choose from Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Modern Greek or Spanish. The Diploma extends your study by one year to fit the required three years of language study, and you graduate with awards in both your program and the Diploma in Languages. You will leave university with language expertise, in both your chosen language and English, communication skills and greater cultural insight. The Diploma in Languages is not available to international students.
Our teaching staff include high-profile and internationally recognised design practitioners and academics, encouraging students to combine creative exploration with reflective and critical thinking. With a strong focus on design, students will also study digital representation, history and theory, construction, sustainable design, and professional practice. Students are able to participate in school-run overseas and interstate studios or participate in exchange programs to study overseas for a semester. All programs endeavour to prepare students for careers that will contribute to the complex development of projects destined to shape our inevitably changing built environments—an increasingly vital area of concern for everyone’s future.

Architecture/Landscape Architecture/Urban Design Study to Career Pathways The Bachelor of Design Studies (B.Des.St.) followed by the Master of Architecture is recognised by the Australian Institute of Architects (AIA) and accredited by the Architects Board of South Australia. These two programs can be completed in five years of study. A total of two years practical experience, at least one of which
must be taken after graduation, and an examination by the Architects Registration Board are prerequisites to registration as an architect. A similar pathway applies for aspiring landscape architects, with the Master of Landscape Architecture being recognised by the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) and examined by the Registered Landscape Architects Board for registration. The B.Des.St. followed by either the Master of Planning or the Master of Planning (Urban
Design) are study pathways both accredited by the Planning Institute of Australia (PIA), with a full accreditation process completed in 2011. Again these two programs can be completed in five years of study. Planners and urban designers typically follow careers in local and state government or in independent consultancy offices. The professions are growing in importance and demand internationally, particularly in areas of rapid urban growth.

Why study the Bachelor of Design Studies? Design is an activity that requires creativity, critical thinking and the ability to understand and respond to the needs and aspirations of people and the possibilities of our environment. Design in the Bachelor of Design Studies degree focuses on the way humans create places through architecture, landscape architecture and urban design. The three-year Bachelor of Design Studies degree can be taken alone or as the first part of the professionally accredited academic programs of Master of Architecture or Master of Landscape Architecture. Alternatively, the Bachelor of Design Studies program provides a study pathway for students who wish to undertake the Master of Planning (Urban Design)/Master of Landscape Architecture. The program involves the arts and the sciences, writing and graphics, design and analysis, management and engineering, together with architecture, landscape architecture and urban design. Students will find themselves involved in practical aspects of the program, such as designing, making models, visiting building sites, landscapes and gardens, visiting art galleries and exhibitions, and absorbing aspects of the society in which people live and formulating proposals for improving the environment.
What careers can the Bachelor of Design Studies lead to? The B.Des.St. leads to careers that require skills in analysing and interpreting situations, the use of creative decision making approaches, and the formulation of proposals for change or conservation. Graduates of the Bachelor of Design Studies are well equipped to continue on to a broad spectrum of future studies in other fields because of the program’s emphasis on critical thinking, creative action, communication skills and digital

The Honours program allows students to research a particular area from a wide range of topics such as digital design media (CAD), history of landscapes and buildings, cross-cultural architectural studies, and environmental studies. The Honours program opens the possibility for students to continue their studies into the Postgraduate (by Research) program, either in a Masters or PhD level.
I found the Master of Landscape “ Architecture to be one of the most rewarding programs with excellent teachers and motivational tutors.

By undertaking the Bachelor of Design Studies, I have been given a broad education that has allowed me to explore the many roles and paths the profession offers… The degree itself covers an eclectic range of topics, from issues of sustainability to construction, the use of digital media and the wider histories and theories of architecture, landscape architecture and urban design… it has challenged what I perceived the role of the designer to be.
