Law

Law There are few disciplines that are more challenging or satisfying than law. Due to the high-level analytical skills developed and knowledge acquired throughout a law degree, graduates are sought after not only in the legal profession but also in other areas of employment, including the commercial, government and non-government sectors. As a student of the Adelaide Law School you will experience a stimulating, challenging and rewarding environment in which to study law.

Global Learning The University of Adelaide is committed to offering all its students the opportunity to study overseas through a range of programs including student exchange, study tours and summer and winter schools. There are many exciting opportunities in the Americas, Europe and Asia. For the most up-to-date information about these programs please visit www. adelaide.edu.au/student/study_abroad

to students. Previously, workshops have been held in: first-year writing, answering assignment questions, receiving feedback and a law exam workshop was also run.

Student support Peer networking www.law.adelaide.edu.au/students/ peer-networking The culture and expectations at university are different from those at high school or other institutions. But students aren’t expected to figure it out on their own—the Adelaide Law School’s Peer Networking program helps students to adapt with ease.

First year induction program Students have the opportunity to meet with past University of Adelaide law graduates, talk with academic staff and join the Peer Networking program at an induction day.

Academic course and student advisers Academic course and student advisers are available to offer advice on how to structure your degree and various academic staff can also assist with elective selection.

Student workshops These workshops are run at key times in first semester to provide additional support

International study opportunities www.law.adelaide.edu.au/students/exchange In addition to being able to participate in the University’s exchange programs the Adelaide Law School has signed law-only exchanges with Pace University and Oregon University in the United States of America, Copenhagen University in Denmark, Mannheim University in Germany and Poitiers University in France. Students also have the opportunity to apply to undertake the law study tour. In 2012 the law study tour travelled to Germany and The Hague in the Netherlands, for a series of lectures at various universities and to visit places of interest such as the International Criminal Court, and the International Court of Justice.

Special study programs www.law.adelaide.edu.au/students/special There are a number of opportunities for students to gain credit for special programs that will provide valuable practical experience. These include internship opportunities and clinical legal education.

Fit uni into your life Attendance at university is less structured than time spent at high school. The hours spent on campus in lectures, tutorials, practicals or in the field—known as ‘contact hours’— depend on the program students enrol in, study mode selected (internal, external, online or flexible learning) and course choices. This diary snapshot is only one example of how a student may choose to schedule their university study and life.

Yes, I picked up an LL.B which led me to a satisfying decade as a practising solicitor, but the University of Adelaide gave me so much more. It was there I joined the Footlights Club and participated in comedy revues in Union Hall and the Little Theatre; I learned how to write sketches and how to perform for an audience—skills I rely on to make my living some twenty years later. That’s the wonderful thing about the University of Adelaide—you get so much more out of it than just the degrees.

In addition students can participate in Adelaide Law Reform courses (visit www.law. adelaide.edu.au/reform) and can apply to be involved with the Adelaide Law Review; a refereed journal that is published twice a year by the Adelaide Law Review Association— visit www.law.adelaide.edu.au/review

A law degree is highly regarded by government and industry as an invaluable general degree. The advanced research and writing skills are highly sought after and the knowledge and skills obtained easily transferable. Approximately half of all law graduates in fact do not practice law but instead develop careers in private industry and government.

Bachelor of Laws with Arts

In addition to those careers available to all law graduates the double degree program opens up many career opportunities in intellectual property, patent law and technology law.

Graduate positions are available in such areas at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the United Nations, aid agencies and developmental related organisations.

Bachelor of Laws with Environmental Policy and Management

This program enables students to combine their law studies with a range of geographical and environmental studies. Graduates are well placed to pursue careers in natural resource management, natural resource planning, catchment management, environmental consulting, environmental management, government or corporate policy advising.

Bachelor of Laws with Health Science

Graduates of this double degree may find careers in the fields of public health policy, patent development and commercial opportunities in the development of new technologies.

Why study the Bachelor of Laws? The Law School offers a Bachelor of Laws degree (LL.B) that can be completed as a single degree or as part of a double degree program. The compulsory requirements of the law degree ensure a thorough grounding in common law principles and legal methodology and a wide choice of elective courses range from the commercial (e.g. Intellectual Property, and Taxation Law) to liberal and sociallyoriented topics (e.g. Family Law and Legal Theory). The law degree provides graduates with a rigorous knowledge of the areas of substantive law necessary to undertake legal practice within a broad liberal education.

Laws double degrees The Bachelor of Laws may be undertaken with another degree. Approved double degree programs allow students to count designated law courses towards that degree, thereby reducing the time taken to complete both

degrees. As an example, a Bachelor of Arts (three years) and Bachelor of Laws (four years) may be completed in five years if studied simultaneously. Please check Degree Finder to ensure prerequisites are met for both degrees: www.adelaide.edu.au/degree-finder Graduates who complete a double degree program are uniquely placed to pursue specialist career opportunities offered beyond the law. Students can choose from a wide range of areas (see table below).

Potential careers A career in law is distinctively appealing due to the wide range of options and opportunities available and as such is one of the most popular choices amongst today’s students. Those who become lawyers may choose to be involved in court work or alternatively may decide to practise as a solicitor. Many graduates enter the legal profession, although a significant number choose to pursue careers in industry, government, commerce, community organisations or academic institutions.

Program structure The program consists of a number of compulsory law courses that provide students with a sound understanding of legal concepts, processes and methods. In addition, students choose from a range of elective law courses in areas of specialised interest, which include Comparative Law, Corporate/Taxation Law, Criminal Law, Environmental Law, Family Law, Intellectual Property, Labour and Industrial Relations Law, Human Rights and International Law. Students can include some non-law electives towards their studies although these are limited.

Internships/work placement Students are provided with a number of opportunities to undertake placements either through an internship program or by undertaking the Clinical Legal Education elective—find out more at www.law.adelaide.edu.au/students/special
