Savor Something New at Los Fuegos Los Fuegos, Francis Mallman’s acclaimed temple to South American live-fire cooking, is turning up the heat this season with a sun-filled Sunday brunch offer and mouthwatering new menus. Take your weekends to the next level with Faena’s lavish Sunday Asado Brunch. Debuting in May, the weekly buffet-style brunch will feature a jaw-dropping selection of colorful salads and vegetables, oven-baked breads and empanadas, an array of fresh-from-the-sea fish, sizzling prime cuts and seared “plancha” dishes. Guests can also enjoy their choice of bot-
tomless mimosas, bloody marys and sangria pitchers to wash it all down, as well as cushy complimentary chaise lounges with butler service at Faena Beach, so you can laze the day away with your favorite people. All week long, however, there are new gastronomic treasures to enjoy, including the South Beach Scramble for breakfast, featuring local crab and chimichurri, a
grilled whole-fish ‘Parrillada’ for lunch, and an evening entrée of beef tenderloin wrapped in bacon-charred onion petals and slathered in Los Fuegos' signature criolla sauce.

In Good Taste Take a sybaritic journey with “Top Chef” and James Beard award-winning culinary master, Paul Qui, will present an inspired omakase of crab dishes with sake pairings in Faena’s exclusive wine room, La Cava. In Japan, there is a culinary tradition of ordering ‘omakase,’ a word that literally translates to respectfully leaving another to decide what is best, or in gastronomic terms, chef’s selection. When entrusting the menu to Paul Qui, diners can expect an innovative and surprising selection of Filipino-inflected dishes that showcase the chef’s iconic culinary creativity. For the second installment of Pao's Spring Omakase Series, Chef Paul Qui and Pao's chef de cuisine, Benjamin Murray, will collaborate on a spontaneous, multi-course menu featuring a variety of fresh crab from South Florida and beyond. Each dish can also be paired with a curated selection of Japanese sake. The monthly dinner series is held in Faena Hotel Miami Beach's private wine room, La Cava, where guests of this intimate experience
will gather at a communal table in the soft glow of candlelight. Throughout his prolific career, Qui has fused together unpredictable combinations to create flavor-packed tasting plates, which over the years have evolved into one of his trademark specialties. "My culinary career started with my passion for Japanese cuisine because of its aesthetic, discipline and culture," says Qui, whose authentic cooking carries the stamp of a true artist. In-house guests may dial the Concierge at 4037 for more information. Reservations can be made at +1 786 655 5600. APR

A TASTE OF SUMMER Pao is cooking up a multi-course summer menu that is farm fresh, full of flavor, and worth the wait. Of course, you’ll find Pao’s signature specialties like cobia kinilaw and glazed fried chicken on the menu, but there will be plenty of new experimental recipes to spice up your summer evenings. Chef de Cuisine Benjamin Murray thrives on building dishes around micro-seasonal ingredients, so diners can expect summer staples like squash, watermelon and cherries. “My favorite ingredients are the tropical fruits we source from Paradise Farms in Homestead like jackfruit, lychee, tamarind, and sapote,” he says. In addition, Chef Murray is aging a range of small batch vinegars including passion fruit, black garlic and rose to flavor new dishes. “We’re also using fresh flowers to create a special tea for guests to enjoy with dessert.”
Starting May 2019. In-house guests may dial the Concierge at 4037 for more information. Reservations can be made at +1 786 655 5600.
NOCHES DE SON Balmy Wednesday nights were born for indulgent Havana-inspired cocktail hours under the stars at Faena’s Tree of Life. Embody island life at Faena Hotel's Tree of Life, where locals and guests mingle beneath the setting sun as the live quartet Ola 305 creates a sonic experience synthesizing tropical beats and Afro-Cuban funk. Sip on a classic Cuba Libre, a glass of Faena's smallbatch vino, or switch it up with inventive Bacardi libations like the citrusy Acere, a tantalizing combination of cherry liqueur, grapefruit and rum, or Dale, mixed with añejo rum, scotch, vermouth and violet liqueur. Cuba’s signature flavors come alive with complimentary light bites from the kitchen of famed grillmaster Francis Mallmann, and of course there are hand-rolled cubano cigars to make it a delightfully authentic affair.
In-house guests may dial the Concierge at 4037 for more information. Cocktail hour every Wednesday at 5:00-8:00 pm.

The haunting words of Edgar Allan Poe. The scintillating movements of the Alma Dance Company. The lusciously intimate space of Faena Theater. It all synthesizes together with CASK, an evocative and seductive contemporary ballet that unfolds for three nights only this Spring. "CASK" is inspired by “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allan Poe, a timeless short story that
explores the venge-seeking demons and pulsating rage that can come on the tailwinds of betrayal and true love. In a sinful, boundary-pushing retelling, the Alma Dance Company uses their flowing bodies and stirring movements to explore these human themes and unite the story’s passion with that of the breathless audience.

Immersive Musical Experiences by Faena Art, during Miami Music Week This year’s Miami Music Week was one for the books with a new iteration of the Winter Music Conference debuting at Faena Forum and a variety of incendiary performative installations presented by Faena Art. “Without music, life would be a mistake.” This sentiment, attributed to the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, is a belief that knits together the hundreds of thousands of music enthusiasts who attend Miami Music Week each year. Faena Forum hosted many of the revelers during this year’s Winter Music Conference, a cornerstone convention where the electric music industry’s most innovative artists, songwriters, DJs and producers talk shop, network and perform live. Faena Art, Faena’s nonprofit arm dedicated to fostering new models for performative social interaction, produced a range of immersive art experiences across the Faena District. Suzi Analogue, creator of Never Normal Records, took to the Faena Theater stage to perform ZONEZ
V4, a multifarious audio/visual ‘moodboard’ that spun elements of sound, film and live performance to exalt the empowered femme identity. At Faena Forum, Brazilian artist Vivian Caccuri, gave the crowd TabomBass, a public sound installation inspired by Afro-Brazilian history where musicians created a polyphonic work by layering new sounds over pre-recorded African basslines. Music trio Mardeleva closed out Miami Music Week at Faena Theater with a stirring performance that harnessed the energy of concert attendees and sent them home on a consciousness-expanding frequency. Spring into Wellness at Tierra Santa Healing House PREVENTION IS THE KEY
This month, Faena’s 22,000 square-foot sanctuary of wellness features a packed calendar of events designed to nourish your mind, body and soul, all timed perfectly to this season of rebirth and renewal.
BY DR. ROBERTA DEL CAMPO TIERRA SANTA HEALING HOUSE WELLNESS COLLABORATOR With over 5 million cases diagnosed in the United States each year, skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. Fortunately, skin cancer is also one of the most preventable forms of cancer. With Skin Cancer Awareness Month right around the corner, let’s focus on the more common type of skin cancer, nonmelanoma skin cancer, which includes basal and squamous cell carcinomas. These skin cancers are typically localized to the skin with little risk of metastases. Below are some additional facts and statistics to know about. • More people are diagnosed with skin cancer each year in the U.S. than all other cancers combined. • One in five Americans will develop skin cancer by the age of 70. • The diagnosis and treatment of nonmelanoma skin cancers in the U.S. increased by 77 percent between 1994 and 2014. • About 90 percent of nonmelanoma skin cancers are associated with exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. • Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common form of skin cancer. An estimated 4.3 million cases of BCC are diagnosed in the U.S. each year, resulting in more than 3,000 deaths. • Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the second most common form of skin cancer. More than 1 million cases of SCC are diagnosed in the U.S. each year, resulting in more than 15,000 deaths. • Regular daily use of an SPF 15 or higher sunscreen reduces the risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma by about 40 percent. • The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends that everyone practice monthly head-to-toe self-examination of their skin, so that they can find any new or changing lesions that might be cancerous or precancerous. Skin cancers found and removed early are almost always curable. • A baseline skin exam followed by repeat annual exams (more frequent if diagnosed with a skin cancer) by a board-certified dermatologist.

“This Is Not America” Heads to Buenos Aires The Faena Festival, which explores the different narratives and mythologies associated with America, will debut across the city of Buenos Aires this April 8 to 14, in collaboration with the Semana del Arte and ArteBA, one of the largest contemporary art fairs in Latin America. The first edition of the festival explores Buenos Aires’ influential role as a port city that has long received immigrants, refugees and travelers. ‘This Is Not America’ addresses the continent of America as a concept more than a place, a powerful idea that is greater than the waters and borders that frame it, says Zoe Lukov, curator for Faena Art. It will feature site-specific 1.

to some of the works that formed part of The Library of Babel, a collection dedicated exclusively to fantastic literature and, in particularly, short stories within that genre. The combination could not be more appropriate: Borges choosing fantastic stories for someone else to read and, in the collection we find, among others: “The Concentric Deaths” by Jack London “The Mirror that Fled” by Giovanni Papini “The Guest of the Last Parties” by Villiers de L'Isle-Adam “The Door in the Wall” by H. G. Wells “The Shining Pyramid” by Arthur Machen “The Eye of Apollo” by G. K. Chesterton “The Statue of Salt” by Leopoldo Lugones “Micromégas” by Voltaire “Idle Days on the Yann” by Lord Dunsany In addition to the abovementioned collection, the prologues are collected in Prologues to the Library of Babel, a list that, as Roberto Calasso said of the bibliography of Crowds and Power by Elias Canetti, is a kind of route map, an invitation to follow the path of somebody who has found in the short story one of he best vehicles for the awe that literature can inspire in us.

Sometimes when one looks at the history of literature, and especially its curiosities, it is often the case that the ability to write manifests itself in capricious forms, even in authors that we consider portentous. Octavio Paz, for example, was above all a poet, and

an outstanding essayist, but hardly ventured into prose fiction; something similar happened with Julio Cortázar, whose stories are extraordinary but who, according to the critics, was less fortunate with the novel (Hopscotch would be the exception because, it is said, it has the structure of a collection of short stories.) It may be that these limitations are not necessarily casual but rather tell us of the inclination and the personal taste that little by little and through experience become masterful and lead to a domination of a genre. Perhaps a poet cannot write a novel but will show great talent when tackling poetry. This is somewhat the case with Jorge Luis Borges, who, on the other hand, took great pleasure in drawing up lists and creating a hierarchy of the works of others.
