The Spice of Miami

A Buffet for the Senses

Dine in style during summer’s dog days with Miami Spice, a citywide undertaking by the hottest restaurants in Miami, each highlighting dishes from the gourmet world’s best and brightest. This August and September, indulge in sybaritic prix-fixe lunches and dinners at special prices with rotating menus at Los Fuegos, Pao and Casa Faena.

Sunday asado at Los Fuegos is always a good idea, but this time, bring your swimsuit! After a decadent procession of grilled fare from the mind of master chef Francis Mallmann, guests receive a day pass to Faena’s pristine beachfront to lounge post-meal. Gather around the table for unlimited mimosas, Bloody Marys, and sangria while filling up on homemade pastries and fire-roasted fare from the mouthwatering Argentine buffet. You’ll smell the oven-baked bread before you savor each morsel. Your taste buds will purr with satisfaction after biting into authentic beef empanadas and flakey cinnamon pecan rolls. Take your pick from the fresh selection of delicious delicacies from the sea, chilled on ice, including poached jumbo prawns, tuna tartare and Alaskan crab legs. The main event, however, is the iron dome: A time-honored

method of asado cooking over a live fire that lends tenderness and irresistible flavor to slowcooked ribeye, grilled lamb racks, succulent fish and whole-roasted pork. Buen provecho!

CHAMPAGNE, CAVIAR, AND… BINGO!

In-house guests may dial the Concierge at 4037 for more information. Reservations can be made at +1 786 655 5600.

Looking for a weekday pick me up? Faena’s elevating game night every Wednesday this summer with congenial competition and a lavish snack and drink menu.

Sunday Asado Los Fuegos 12:00 - 4:00 pm

This isn’t your grandmother’s bingo. Sip on sparkling champagne and dine on decadent Osetra caviar and light bites while indulging in a game night classic in the gorgeous Living Room lounge. From 7:00 pm until 9:00 pm, play traditional bingo to the sultry crooning of our Sinatra-fab troubadour, Louis Amanti (who also calls the games.) You’ll get a midweek buzz with special pours of Remy XO and Louis XIII cognac, and specialty champagnes flow with Perrier-Jouët Belle Epoque and Dom Pérignon 2009, by both the glass and bottle. Enjoy exclusive discounts on our best-relished snacks, including Peruvian chips with sturgeon roe and fresh sour cream, prawn summer rolls, and truffle sliders.

Bingo! is complimentary to play. Reservations are strongly encouraged for The Living Room. Dress code enforced. In-house guests may dial the concierge at 4037 for reservations and more information.

Set course for the grassy ranges of Argentina at Los Fuegos, where protégés of grillmaster Francis Mallmann—a poet at heart hailed by Esquire as “the most interesting chef in the world”—work culinary magic with the primal forces of fire and iron through plancha-cooked snapper and cast-iron wild mushroom with aligot. Reminiscent of golden age Miami splendor, the dining room embodies elegance and high drama as diners sample slow-cooked leeks with romesco

and goat cheese to start, then ribeye churrasco kissed with criollo sauce and fresh parsley salad, and a final flourish of smoked honey Greek yogurt. At Pao, James Beardaward winning chef Paul Qui and his team serve up compelling Asian fusion dishes in a striking, ocean view setting. Qui, whose lifetime ambition is to “[eat] his way around the world,” presents crudo, fresh line-caught fish and meats perfectly cooked over Japanese binchotan charcoal. Sample the Sisig rice bowl,

with its distinct zing of garlic, black vinegar and lime, and end with a lip-smacking lychee crumble. Casa Faena delights lunch guests with choices of slow-roasted cochinita pibil pork tacos and empanadas to start, entrees of seared salmon and flavorful chimichurri skirt steak, and a decadent crème brûlée finish.

Summer Jazz Series: Now Hear This

Last Call: Samsara Cabaret Nears its Finale

Faena Theater welcomes back Matthew Whitaker, a prodigious jazz pianist and organist, for another incredible performance as part of its third annual Summer Jazz Series presented by American Airlines.

Faena Theater’s electrifying cirque cabaret, Samsara, will take its final bow in September. Now is the time to soak up its radiance before it reaches the end of its life cycle.

LIVE ENTERTAINMENT AT THE LIVING ROOM & THE SA XONY BAR THE LIVING ROOM •

August welcomes back some of our favorite live performers and DJs, including Sir Portela, American Gipsy, Javier Garcia, Mi Dulce Son, Sol + The Tribu, The Usual Suspects, Alejandro Elizondo Trio, Steph Michaels, Jackie Mendes, Jahzel Dotel, The French Horn Collective, Louis Amanti, Write Sounds Jazz, Dj Funky Therapy, DJ Richie Hell, DJ Mojody, DJ Sire, DJ Giovanetti, DJ Diego Ciaramella, DJ DiscoRocks, and DJ Fabian Giannattasio, among many others.

CBS producers say he plays like the second coming of Ray Charles. Music critics have already drawn comparisons to Stevie Wonder. But the remarkable talents of musician Matthew Whitaker are singularly unique and entirely his own. Blind since birth, the ambitious artist became the youngest Hammond-endorsed musician at age 13 before being named a Yamaha Artist at just 15 years old, the youngest musician to join Yamaha’s stellar group of jazz pianists. You may recognize Whitaker from his televised performances on programs such as “Ellen”, “Today Show”, and “The Harry Connick Jr. Show”. At the age of 10, Whitaker also opened for Stevie

Wonder’s Hall of Fame induction ceremony at Harlem’s famed Apollo Theater after winning the “Child Stars of Tomorrow” competition. Using his perfect pitch and dedication to craft, Whitaker has developed a mastery and magnetism that's drawn crowds to impressive venues like Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in New York and venues across Europe, Asia and Africa. “I am a musician, who happens to be blind,” he said. “I have been blessed with a God-given gift. I pray that I can continue to be a blessing and inspiration to others.” On August 21, Whitaker’s performance at Faena Theater will highlight music from his sophoLocal singer and songwriter Javier Garcia brings his wide-ranging musical repertoire to Faena’s intimate lounge, The Living Room.

Sprinkle a dose of Samsara Cabaret’s stardust on your summer. Narrated by a “Goddess of Experience” through a series of lively vignettes, the show is a vortex of cosmic fantasy with mind-bending choreography and an experimental score brought to life by powerhouse vocalists and an electric string duo that will stir your soul. The outstanding ensemble of award-winning talent includes "America's Got Talent" semi-finalist singer Yoli Mayor, violinist Shane Borth, cellist Ben Munoz, and Sensatia's star aerialists, Megan Stockman and Samantha Mixon.

The captivating production tells the tale of Artemis, a mythical goddess played by Miami native Bianca Allanic, as she transcends time and space on a quest for her truest form. Throughout her journey, she encounters forces of light and darkness that lure her deeper into an erotic fantasyland brought to life through striking visuals, powerful song, acrobatics and fire dancing. The mythology of the phoenix, woven throughout the show, provided a north star for Allanic in portraying her character. “The phoenix understands the impermanence of its current incarnation and takes

on each new cycle with wisdom, grace and power.” So does Allanic as she flawlessly fuses classic ballet, contemporary dance and burlesque movements. Samsara is sensuous meditation on the eternal cycle of creation and transformation, during which guests are siren-called to leave their old selves behind in search for the ever-new. Embark on the uplifting journey before the final curtain falls on September 14.

The Tenets of Healthy Living

THE FOUR BEST SUMMER SKIN TIPS EVER

This month, holistic health coach Coumba Sene will lead a wellness workshop on the tenets of healthy living at Tierra Santa Healing House, as well as complimentary hour-long mindfulness mediations every Saturday afternoon.

BODY-MIND MEDICINE FOR MIAMI SPA MONTHS

BY DR. ROBERTA DEL CAMPO TIERRA SANTA HEALING HOUSE WELLNESS COLLABORATOR

During the city’s annual Miami Spa Months this summer, experience Tierra Santa Healing House’s exclusive Sacred Warrior healing art without breaking the bank.

Sure, summer is the season to kick back, relax, and just enjoy being outside and not freezing, but it's not time to slack on your skincare routine. Here are some skin care tips for the summer season. 1. Mineral-based sunblocks that contain titanium dioxide or zinc oxide offer the best protection. They reflect the sunlight rather than absorbing and scattering the damaging rays. Further, they should be applied every 2 hours at a minimum but more often if swimming or excessively sweating. 2. Breakouts on the face, chest and back may become more common as humidity increases and we sweat more. To prevent acne-like breakouts, add a benzoyl peroxide wash to your skin regimen and use two to three times a week. Find it at your local drug store. 3. Increased temperatures mean an increased risk for dehydration. Therefore, this is the time to amp up your water consumption and add electrolytes. 4. Although antioxidants, both topically and orally, are recommended year-round, they are especially important during summer months. Topical antioxidants not only decrease the risk of damage from free radicals but recent studies have also shown that they enhance the performance of your sunblock. Del Campo Dermatology and Laser Institute 1801 NE 123rd St Suite 312, North Miami Phone: +1 305 705 6675

To book a consultation with Dr. Del Campo, please email spamiami@faena. com or call 786 655 5570. In-house guests may dial Tierra Santa at 3217 for more information.

Workshops for Well-Being Escape the summer heat inside Tierra Santa Healing House’s cool marble sanctuary. August's curated programming includes wellness and mindfulness workshops, shamanic therapy sessions, and a Pranic Healing course led by worldly masters.

As Founder of Yuga Bella Wellness, Sene aims to deter disease through nutrition, physical activity and stress management. “I believe in biological individuality,” she says. “There is no one set remedy for everybody. One person’s cure may be another’s poison.” Her workshops are designed to raise awareness and tackle pertinent issues related to human suffering as well as foster well-being and happiness. “My goal is to activate the inner healer in the people I work with so they can use these skills beyond our time together,” she says. The workshop will focus on the importance of a holistic approach to health. “There are elements other than food that fuel the body and soul,” she explains. “Beyond sound nutrition, we need to have balanced energy and vitality factors like relationships, career, mindful movement and spirituality.” When those are out of alignment, they can cause a range of mental and physical ailments starting with

stress. “Helping people connect with themselves is the starting point of my work,” she says. Sene believes that each and every one of us has the capacity to develop a deeper sense of awareness and clarity that can help us connect to our essence and true life purpose. “We are our own healers,” states Sene. “My part is to motivate people to go inward and pull from the tremendous pool of gifts and potential they harbor within.” In-house guests may dial Tierra Santa at 4380 for reservations. Mindfulness Meditations With Couma Sene 3:00 - 6:00 PM

The Sanskrit scripture, The Bhagavad Gita, tells us that “yoga is the journey of the self, through the self, to the self.” Tierra Santa’s skillful instructors lead guests through the ancient practice every morning, as well as complimentary Twin Hearts meditations at 3 PM every Sunday to Friday. Health coach Coumba Sene kicks off a month of wellness on August 3 with a wellness workshop focusing on the tenets of healthy living. Guests will take a deep dive into the gut and brain connection (the starting point of wellness), as well as how to use holistic tools to mitigate the body’s stress response and how to cultivate meaningful and satisfactory living from the inside out. On August 10, Adriana Di Fiore, a certified bi-lingual coach of The Creative Insight Journey, is offering a workshop in the miracle of mindfulness. She will be teaching simple and powerful mindfulness tools, like how to become the conscious observer of your own thoughts, and techniques to cultivate a deeper sense of calm, compassion and equanimity. Tackle generations of family trauma by participating in shaman Eric Lopez’s Shamanic Family Constellations Workshop on August 15, or partake in a full moon beach meditation guided by Spa Director Agustina Caminos. From August 30 to September 1, Pranic Healing Masters Marilag and Glenn Mendoza will lead a light-

filled rejuvenation weekend getaway focused on the teachings of Master Choa Kok Sui. In-house guests may dial Tierra Santa at 4380 for reservations. For more information and spa bookings, please email spamiami@faena.com or call +1 786 655 5570. AUG

Join an influx of hundreds of dancers this August as they kick up their heels at the Mundial de Tango in Buenos Aires, where the pulse of the city has always thrummed to the rhythms of a tango beat. The festival is the perfect excuse to plunge into the country’s celebrated creative expression that was born in Argentina’s port brothels and lower-class cafes in the late 19th century. Authentic demonstrations will hypnotize and enchant during the Mundial de Tango, colloquially known as the dance form’s World Cup. Two thrill-packed weeks of expert performances, milongas, exhibitions and markets will sweep the town, offering travelers an immersive journey into all things tango. One-two step alongside dancers who radiate supple grace, and if you’re so taken by the sensual dance, treat yourself to a pair of handmade dance shoes. Local haunts like La Viruta, La Catedral and Salon Canning rate as top picks for a visit to a local milonga. But to experience tango at its most sensual decadence, nothing compares to Faena’s own Rojo Tango show. Held against the gilded and scarlet-draped backdrop of El Cabaret—an intimate little jewel box with just 100 seats—flawless tango and haunting live music are the focus. Relish in every delicate flick of an ankle, elaborate costumes and the dramatic storylines of love,

lust and loss as you indulge in a delicious Argentine meal accompanied by your choice of acclaimed native wines—perhaps a freshly uncorked Malbec to delight the palette with a taste as rich as the surroundings. Mundial de Tango Buenos Aires Various Venues

Faena Art is dedicated to producing post-disciplinary and time-based experiences available to the public free of expense, becoming a transformative bridge between the two Americas and transcending the established norms of art, philosophy and social interaction. Its latest site-specific commission is from multidisciplinary artist Osías Yanov, an anthropologist of the fringe whose work brings to life people who embody a physical change: the drug addict, drag queen, transperson, dancer or athlete in order to question the ways in which societies establish values and norms around bodies, gender and sexuality. With “Choreographies of Salt”, he challenges our pre-established notions of the present, of the environment, of our species through a hyperreal installation of the discovery of mythical sirens and mermaids. Inside Sala Catedral at Faena Art Center Buenos Aires, art enthusiasts will find a full-fledged archeological

dig—an actual excavation site with accompanying paraphernalia—revealing the skeleton of a half-human, half-fish creature: the sensual and mysterious siren, ubiquitous in global folklore. The archaeological artwork extends from the dig site into the exhibition space of the Sala Molinos where coarse salt covers the floor and ten performers dressed in chimerical costumes winnow sinuously through the grains, suggesting they also were also “discovered.” Questions awaken within the viewer: Where is the line between human and animal, reality and myth? Sirens, symbols of esoteric knowledge and a fusion of worldly elements of air and water, lead one to ponder in the intersection of gods and monsters, and a corporeal future where chimeras might exist.

As Faena Rose members enjoy their summer travels, our member benefit partners and reciprocal club program are here to elevate their global explorations.

The Key to Micro-Napping: An Oneiric Routine to Open Your Creativity The hypnagogic stage of sleep offers potential that Salvador Dalí was able to tap into and explain. The tenuous border between waking and dreaming is, in the words of Salvador Dali, “an invisible and tense thread” along which an artist is able to walk with a little routine. This routine involves taking one or two micro-naps during the day, in preparation for demanding tasks in any creative area. It requires the following steps:

•1• Sit in a comfortable but straightbacked chair, preferably one with armrests.

2.

•2• Hold a heavy metal key between the thumb and forefinger. •3• Place a dish upside down beneath the key.

For more information about Faena Rose, contact rosemembership@faena.com Follow @Faena.Rose on Instagram for more highlights, happenings, and everything in between.

•4• Close your eyes and clear all thoughts from your head, and try to breathe quietly.

When Dalí nodded off, and his fingers loosened their hold on the key, it fell onto the plate, waking him and bringing him back to his vigil. Seen in slow motion, Dali’s micro-naps last just until the key slips from his fingers and rings the plate-bell. But this was more than enough time to replenish his creative forces. Hypnagogic sleep is the first of four stages of the sleep cycle. It’s the famous “alpha stage” in which the body is preparing for a state of suspension, but when awareness is yet vigilant and awakening is easy. It’s the kind of sleep where we dream of slipping or falling and then wake with a start.

5.

13

Dali’s method introduces the key and the plate as acoustic elements that may cause (although it’s not been scientifically proven) a little adrenaline or cortisone, so that we wake up with the small alert, as happens with common alarm clocks, but with the advantage that the “gong” lasts only a moment, enough to alert our senses and bring them back to wakefulness. At night, you can complement micro-napping with natural sleep aids that encourage lucidity in sleep and rest; and you may discover what, for Walter Benjamin, is the best time of day to recount a dream.

FAENA JOURNAL

FOR THE THRILL OF IT What’s hotter than the Miami summer sun? Alfa Romeo’s polished fleet of Faena red sports cars manned with chauffeurs to take hotel guests to see South Beach’s iconic sights. Faena Hotel Miami Beach guests can explore an Art Deco wonderland from a newly-minted Alfa Romeo Stelvio or Alfa Romeo Giulia, the property’s sexy caravan of complimentary house cars. Sit back and relax as your private driver whisks you away to cruise Ocean Drive while you take in the pastel-hued architectural gems and suntanned bustle of one of the world’s most famous streets. Next, head to Lincoln Road for a leisurely stroll among buzzy shops and restaurants filled with locals and visitors alike. Take a drive through Collins Park cultural triangle, which encompasses The Bass, a contemporary art museum, Miami City Ballet and the Miami Beach Regional Library. In the evenings, hop into the rouge-colored sedan for a Wallcast concert in SoundScape Park featuring classical music performances set to 7,000-square-foot projections onto the façade of the New World Center, home to the New World Symphony.

Fast and Formidable: Alfa Romeo’s NRING Quadrifoglio Italian automaker Alfa Romeo is writing a new chapter in its more than century-long history with 110 NRING limitededition models of the Giulia Quadrifoglio and Stelvio Quadrifoglio now on sale in the United States and Canada. Much like Faena, Alfa Romeo strives for perfect harmony between beauty and purpose, passion and technology, emotion and engineering, to create true works of art.

The NRING editions pay homage to Alfa Romeo’s performance at the famous 73-turn, 12.9-mile Nürburgring track in Germany. Giulia Quadrifoglio clocked a 7:32 lap time, earning its spot as the fastest five-passenger vehicle in the world, while the Stelvio Quadrifoglio delivered an impressive 7:51.7 lap time that made it the fastest production SUV sold in the U.S. Gleaming in Circuito Gray, both special editions come with slick upgrades like a serialized number inlay, carbon fiber accents and black leather interior with red stitching, not to mention adaptive cruise control and an infrared windshield. What needed no tweaking? The 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 engine with 505 horsepower, 443 lb-ft of torque and an eight-speed automatic transmission. In layman’s terms: These cars are formidable and fast. But they’re sophisticated and sexy as well. Think of the Stelvio Quadrifoglio SUV as superstar Idris Elba, who exudes class, elegance and humble power, and much like his acting range, the car is multifaceted in its capabilities. The Giulia Quadrifoglio sedan is more akin to actress Gemma Chan, who flies under the radar amongst her competition but is elite in her class for those truly in the know.

Not your average garage, the OMA-designed Alfa Romeo Faena Park is a sophisticated take on the modern parking structure. Situated between the newly-opened Faena Bazaar and historic Casa Faena hotel, Alfa Romeo Faena Park is a stateof-the-art parking garage in the Faena District designed by OMA, a leading architecture studio founded by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Rem Koolhaas. The 28,000-squarefoot auto park is famous for its unique precast concrete façade with circular openings and an impressive robotic car elevator that installs and retrieves cars from double-stacked shelves. According to The Economist, the ground-floor showroom and penthouse event space overlooking the Atlantic Ocean “enable art and commerce to exist side by side.” This summer, Faena guests can experience a limited-time Alfa Romeo showroom complete with brand specialists standing by to share the Italian automaker’s rich history while showcasing the latest models available for purchase.
