Faena District Invites You to Expand Your Horizons During Miami Art Week Mark your calendar for a proliferation of Miami Art Week events celebrating creativity in all its manifold forms. The inaugural Faena Festival, entitled This Is Not America, asks you to reimagine yourself through a new lens: Tap into the multiplicity of communities and cultures and the palimpsest of histories that have created the Americas. This polyphonic platform amplifies practitioners from disparate artistic fields and specifically responds to Miami as a hemispheric hub. Engage with experiential commissions, immersive installations and experimental films from artists such as Derrick Adams, Miya Ando, Cecilia Bengolea, Joseph Beuys, Ana Teresa Fernández, Alfredo Jaar, Eugene Jarecki, Isabel Lewis, Boris Mitic, Luna Paiva, George Sánchez-Calderón, Tavares Strachan, Wu Tsang and boychild, Agustina Woodgate and Rev. Houston R. Cypress. Debuting December 2, Faena Bazaar will launch as a worldly take on the timeless souk. High-concept, rotating retail experiences will offer top brands in home, fashion and beauty a canvas to tell their stories. Art Week-inspired events come in the form of exclusive pop ups,
fashion-forward affairs and signature couture collections. At Tierra Santa Healing House, shop an exclusive 10-day Fashion Paradise pop-up or soothe your soul with rejuvenating spa experiences. Carve out time for stillness with expert-led meditation sessions, harness the benefits of vibration therapy, and experience energetic renewal with Pranic Healing under the guidance of seasoned Master Glenn Mendoza at the Om Mani Padme Hum workshop. No matter where your art walks take you, wind your way back to The Living Room for handcrafted cocktails every evening, where live bands and guest DJs entertain deep into the night. For a full listing of Faena Festival events, visit www.faenafestival.com Faena Art thanks Perrier-Jouët for its generous support of the inaugural Faena Festival.
ARTISTS UP CLOSE: A MUSIC, VIDEO, FILM & TALK SERIES The Faena District will transform into an immersive cultural campus with a flagship Music, Video, Film & Talk Series during the first-ever Faena Festival. Guests will have a chance to engage oneon-one with artists in intimate settings during the broad-ranging programming series, which includes artist interviews, live DJ sets and conversations among industry leaders. Miami Film Festival’s Executive Director, Jaie Laplante, will present a video and film series in the hotel’s Screening Room, highlighting artists from across the cultural spectrum: Cecilia Bengolea, Joseph Beuys, Ana Teresa Fernández, Eugene Jarecki, Boris Mitić, and Wu Tsang. 1
For a deep dive into the inspiration artists work from, don’t miss talks with Raúl de Nieves, Derrick Adams (1), Casey Fremont, Jasmine Wahi, Loni Johnson, Yashua Klos, Sarah Workneh, Isabel Lewis, Neville Wakefield, Franklin Sirmans, and Jenny Gil. Topics on discussion include the idea of radical play and whether arts education in America can be a practice of freedom. 2
The Brass Ring Raúl de Nieves’ public sculpture takes us on a journey through ancient mythology inspired by the Roman origins of Bvlgari. Raúl de Nieves made a name for himself treating modest materials with meticulous attention and “turning the mundane into the fantastical,” according to the Whitney Biennial. His expansive faux stained-glass window, beaded sculptures and embellished shoes were among the 2017 exhibition’s most acclaimed works.
The 35-year-old Mexican artist is reaching for the brass ring during Miami Art Week with his satellite exhibition, a public sculpture entitled When I Look Into Your Eyes I See The Sun (2018), presented by Bvlgari in collaboration with Art Production Fund. Both the artist and jeweler see and share beauty through color with a powerful and
daring energy. de Nieves’ striking work sits in the hotel’s luminous Cathedral entrance, taking viewers on a journey through ancient mythology inspired by the Roman origins of Bvlgari while representing the cycle of life, metamorphosis and legends in the form of a carousel.

Capture the Wonder of Samsara Cabaret Musical artistry arises from cosmic ash at Faena Theater’s incandescent new show, Samsara Cabaret. Spend an unforgettable evening on a spellbinding journey as you follow the captivating ascent of Artemis, a creature born of stardust, as she realizes her full potential in the universe. Accompanying principal dancer Bianca Allanic in diegetic harmony are world-class composers and musicians Shane Borth and Benjamin Munoz, whose original score and respective electric violin and cello soar in shared melody. Together, their extraordinary range of vibrant, otherworldly tunes fuse modern pop with strands of rock and opera. Combined with soul-stirring vocals by Yoli Mayor and EnVee, their collective performance stuns the senses like an electric nerve and profoundly connects to all watching in rapt
attention. Striking visuals and state-of-the-art lasers dazzle along with elements of cirque nouveau, attention-grabbing projections and fire dancing, as Artemis takes an unforgettable voyage from darkness to light, becoming one with the limitless universe. Finding Your Center During Miami Art Week Miami Art Week is thrilling and undeniably frenetic. Stay centered with Faena’s dedicated spa programming, which offers respite, calm and pampering for the mind, soul and body.
HEALTHY SKIN! BY DR. ROBERTA DEL CAMPO TIERRA SANTA HEALING HOUSE WELLNESS COLLABORATOR As the end of 2018 approaches, it is time to make sure you have had your annual skin cancer screening. This simple exam can save your life. Further, not only do I recommend an annual skin exam by a Board-Certified Dermatologist, I recommend monthly self-skin exams at home. Simply stand in front of a full-length mirror and examine your skin head to toe, using a large hand mirror to help take a closer look at your legs and back. Do you know what you are looking for? Knowing the ABCDs of melanoma could save your life: A=Asymmetry. One half does not match the other half / B=Border. An irregular, scalloped or poorly defined border / C= Color. Varied color or various shades of color from one area to another / D=Diameter or Difference. A diameter larger than 6 mm (size of a pencil eraser) can signify a higher risk of melanoma. Further, if the lesion is different (the "ugly duckling") than any other lesion, this should serve as a possible warning sign. With these simple guidelines, you can help promote early detection and be well on your way to maintaining healthy skin!
To book a consultation with Dr. Del Campo, please email spamiami@faena. com or call 786 655 5570. In-house guests may dial Tierra Santa at 3217 for more information
If you only have room in your diary for one event, be sure to make it to the Om Mani Padme Hum Workshop on December 9, where Master Glenn Mendoza, a direct disciple of Pranic Healer Master Choa Kok Sui, will guide participants in the purifying and cleansing power of mantras. Faena’s curated Twin Hearts Meditation sessions promote the expansion of positive energy into physical and emotional well-being, while world-renowned instructor Tim Feldmann leads an Ashtanga Yoga class for students of all levels. For those of us for whom retail therapy is the ultimate release, there’s the 10-day Tierra Santa Fashion Paradise Pop-Up (Nov. 30Dec. 9) curated by Carolina K. Featuring over 30 designers, mostly Latin American, the pop-up beckons guests to peruse handcrafted, sustainable designs and toast to sunset happy hours paired with a lineup of all female DJs and creative cocktails from star-bartender Christian Sanders. Visual artists will live-paint accessories for sale, a beauty bar with celebrity makeup artists will provide touch-ups, DJs will spin jazz-inspired sets, and guests can participate in enlightening panels on women empowerment and the future of retail. For a post-Basel cleansing of both body and soul, RSVP for a Shamanic Family Constel-
lations Workshop, in which familial traumas going back generations are addressed through shaman-inspired rituals and group exercises to purge participants of subconscious depression and distress. In-house guests may dial Tierra Santa at 3217 to RSVP. For more information and reservations, please email spamiami@faena.com or call 786 655 5570. NOV

PAO DISHES UP NEW WINTER RECIPES As the earth rotates another cycle and we move toward the chill of winter, Pao warms the spirits with inspired new crudos and entrees.
Plated Memories This holiday, leave the entertaining to us as we present you with decadent culinary treasures at our two world-class restaurants, Los Fuegos and Pao. Celebrate Faena’s South American roots at Los Fuegos with Christmas and New Year’s Eve dinner menus resplendent with grilled delights. Dashes of Faena’s signature red accent the restaurant’s crescent banquettes outfitted in luscious leopard print and a stunning showpiece chandelier—a beautiful backdrop to your holiday celebrations. Start your meal with fresh crudo, your choice of ember-baked pumpkin al rescoldo or creamy burrata finished with mushrooms vinaigrette, pecan praline and fresh herbs. Then sink into a buttery grilled Maine lobster drizzled with a sinful black truffle hollandaise, followed by the main event: slow-cooked asado ribeye with indulgent Anna potatoes and chimichurri. Save room for dessert, a festive almond praline Yule log or a heavenly streusel with fresh pear sorbet, perfect for chocolate aficionados. At Pao, leather booths and a golden unicorn create a sleek and stylish ambience that underscores the restaurant’s creative gastronomy. Here, guests can stimulate their palate dining on scallops with truffle dashi and scallion, or perhaps hamachi topped with ponzu jelly and refreshing watermelon relish. Dinner options
include memorable Alaskan king crab with umeboshi butter, gulay curry with aromatic herbs, or mouthwatering Wagyu strip adobo aged in kombu and served with Japanese sweet potatoes. End on a sweet note with an exquisite coffee cremeux with spongy bahibe chocolate cake and cocoa nib crisp, or Meyer lemon ice cream topped by a dollop of hazelnut meringue. The indulgent scallop crudo dressed in black truffle features a surprisingly fresh burst of crisp celery and scallion—a bright lightness contrasting with rich umami that Chef Benjamin Murray views as a hallmark feature of winter in sunny Miami. For heartier Filipino fare, the striploin adobo is 16 ounces of Mishima Reserve Wagyu aged in Kombu, and the innovative Lobster Kare Kare is a notable luxury—a whole, sweet two-pound Maine lobster dished up in an earthy oxtail peanut stew. The entire menu pulls inspiration from seasonal delicacies including winter squashes, citruses and a variety of truffles that truly shine this time of year.
Celebrated nuances in new dishes include prized White Alba Truffles, as well as exquisite burgundy truffles in the scallops’ dashi and steak adobo. “Our winter offerings lean towards the rich, savory and flavorful,” says Chef Murray. “I think our current menu, including our newer dishes, are some of the best we’ve ever come up with at Pao.”

Faena Rose is our art and culture-based private members club, which brings together a dynamic community of likeminded individuals through a robust, year-round calendar of the most engaging and transformative cultural experiences. Museum, Guggenheim, Whitney Museum of American Art, Studio Museum in Harlem, and National Portrait Gallery, among many others. Iconic artist Christo will also join Rose members during Miami Art Week for a pre-release screening of the new documentary, Walking on Water, followed by a Q&A with the artist. The film is a cinéma vérité look at Christo’s process during the creation of his most recent large-scale installation, The Floating Piers, on Italy’s Lake Iseo. Originally conceived in 1970 by Christo and his late wife and collaborator, Jeanne-Claude, the stunning, site-specific masterpiece was first realized 10 years after her passing. Documented with uncensored access to Christo and his team, Walking on Water is an unprecedented portrait
of a man chasing a dream against the backdrop of epic madness—the complex dealings that merge between art and state politics, engineering challenges and logistical nightmares, and the sheer force of nature. Having created some of the most visually breathtaking works of the last 60 years, Christo and Jeanne-Claude are included in the permanent collections of the most prestigious museums around the world, and the exhibition Christo and Jeanne-Claude: Surrounded Islands, Biscayne Bay, Greater Miami, Florida, 1980-83 is currently on view at the Pérez Art Museum Miami. The theme of the inaugural Faena Festival, This is Not America, is a multidisciplinary effort to shake the old paradigms of cultural diversity. It’s a vivid experiment which aims to reimagine the world’s cartography, not based on elements separated by borders, but from a shared territory manifesting itself in an ominous friction, inevitable, and certainly magical. What better way than with the artistic voices of diverse cultures which, tuned in and acting as ambassadors for their respective identities, are committed to reconfiguring the old maps and renewing the ultra-diverse imagery which represents all of us today? Is it not this multiplicity the jewel in humanity’s crown? Is it not through practicing and sharing that today, we can relegate that sacred aspect of our collective existence? We can recall that the cultural separation that’s marked our history is part of a process whose second, and inevitable, stage is a meeting—solve et coagula, as the alchemists would say. Today it’s time to become aware of this, and to celebrate, more than ever, the sacred diversity that unites people as human beings, and now without exception.

Reality is of those who narrate it, who cultivate it, and who share its stories. Today, that reality, perhaps more than ever in history, is made up of countless narratives: forces and stimuli coming from the most diverse cultural landscapes, traditions and mythologies. This diversity, one of the features distinguishing us as a species, manifests itself at points of condensation. Here, we don’t speak of geographic places, but of the spaces forged in orgiastic exchanges of multiple cultural energies. In an increasingly global world, how can we build meeting points to equalize this overflowing diversity? How can we unite without becoming uniform? How do we celebrate differences while remembering that, in the end, we’re all one? Faced with all these questions, and to answer them, we have two specific tools: creativity and collaboration. The first is an indelible quality of the human essence, and it’s precisely this which allows us to enrich the interventions we make in reality. For example, in imagining ways of mutually enriching the numerous cultural identities interacting today. The second – collaboration – is the perfect catalyst for channeling this plural energy, allowing it to unfold shared realities unto new limits.

To kick off Miami Art Week, award winning artist Mickalene Thomas will join Rose members for a conversation moderated by writer and curator, Dr. Maura Reilly, in collaboration with The Feminist Institute. Celebrated for her texturally rich paintings, collages, photography, video, and installations, Mickalene will discuss how she draws on art history and popular culture to create a contemporary vision of female sexuality, beauty, and power. With influences ranging from early modernist masters to the civil rights movement and second wave of feminism, Mickalene constructs complex imagery that effectively challenges common representations of women. Her work can be found in exhibitions around the world as well as the permanent collections of MoMA, The Brooklyn
