A Rewarding Year At Faena, we remind ourselves that no matter how rocky the road might be, as long as you have a clear objective, passion to reach it, and a good team helping out, yo will always get there. After years of fearless dreaming and tireless effort, Alan Faena, his numerous collaborators, and innumerable community supporters, are delighted to be acknowledged as an integral and essential part of Miami’s arts district. It is Faena’s mission and intention to continue to serve and support the local and international community with original and innovative cultural experiences throughout the hotel, theater, restaurants, arts center, and bazaar to create the “pure magic” that continues to separate Faena from the rest.
The year 2016 was a phenomenal success for Faena Hotel Miami Beach, which earned recognition from dozens of international media outlets and was awarded numerous accolades across an array of categories. From all of us at Faena, we are very grateful for those who work to make this hotel spectacular and, most importantly, for our guests. They are the soul of this inspiring project.
“This is not just a hotel. It is a cultural phenomenon. It is the brainchild of an Argentinian whizz who has created Miami’s coolest new arts hub bang on the city’s loveliest beach... The whole package is pure magic.” —TATLER MAGAZINE

When Faena Art first announced it would close the roads throughout Faena District to make way for Cuban dancers, Haitian drummers, kid acrobats, live performances and a procession of street food cars, people thought we were crazy. When they heard we would be adding a site-specific dance performance, a dome on the beach projecting 360-degree videos, curated parties throughout our properties and a series of concerts with renowned artists such as
Bon Jovi and Kendrick Lamar, they assumed we were joking. But we weren’t. What initially sounded like a lunatic’s rant was quickly laid-down on paper with the help of great collaborators, top curators, renowned artists, leading musicians and a great production unit. We took over Miami Beach during Art Basel, becoming the city’s cultural epicenter and an unmissable stop in the art circuit. And we’re ready to make it bigger and better in 2017. Call us mad geniuses.

Faena District Opening Celebration Building upon parades, carnivals, and other public ceremonials from across the Americas and the Caribbean, Tide by Side inaugurated the Faena District Miami Beach with new commissions and American premieres of works by an international cast of artists and performers. Created under the artistic direction of Claire Tancons, in collaboration with musical director Arto Lindsay and architectural director Gia Wolff, Tide by Side set loose a dancing street party down Miami’s historic Collins Avenue. The event represented the culmination of a two-year collaboration with more than 30 South Florida cultural institutions and hundreds of participants—an unprecedented collective celebration, powered by Mercedes-Benz. Drawing inspiration from the vibrant parades, carnivals and ceremonies in the Americas and the Caribbean, Tide by Side achieved a truly immersive experience, in which parade-watchers became active participants, able to walk around rotating segments of the carousel and interact closely with performers.
The festival was set to an entirely unique, exceptionally innovative soundtrack of remixed rhythms that featured digitally enhanced renditions ranging from conch-shell players to street marching bands and steel drums. Floats highlighted some of Miami’s most beloved cultural traditions—including a large-scale piñata, a Cuban conga ensemble, a limo-towed barbecue grill, and a herd of food and lonchera trucks. Participating artists included Carlos Betancourt, Carnival Arts, Los Carpinteros, Miralda, Marinella Senatore, Ernesto Neto, and more than 30 Miami-based cultural groups. Tide by Side successfully integrated the deeply beloved tradition of processional performance within an urban, 21st-century landscape, allowing Miami’s globalized village to unite and celebrate the opening of the city’s newest cultural hub.

Faena Forum Opening Just in time for Art Basel, the newly completed, 43,000-square-foot Faena Forum was unveiled. Located in the heart of the six-block Faena District Miami Beach and home to Faena Art, this monumental construction, designed by Pritzker Prize-winning Rem Koolhaas / OMA, is Miami’s new cultural cornerstone. Endowed with the mission of inspiring, nourishing and showcasing cutting-edge creative collaborations, the Faena Forum enjoyed an inaugural celebration that was fully aligned with its ambitious mission. On November 28th,Once With Me, Once Without Me—the world-premiere dance commission by Pam Tanowitz created in collaboration with architect Sho Shigematsu from OMA, the firm founded by Rem Koolhaas—took center stage. Faena Art commissioned this piece with the idea of conjuring an act of cultural acupuncture to mark the opening of Faena Forum. The result of this collaboration— an exercise that neither party had tried ever before—was an awakening of the building, a new addition to the city’s landscape conceived as a place to be occupied and lived in through the ritual of performance. As architects of the Forum, OMA is uniquely positioned to create a site-sensitive scenic design that highlights the building as a work of art in and of itself. Tanowitz, approaching her choreography with the mind of a dance historian, rearranged chronology and narrative through her use of moving bodies, allowing steps and breath to activate dormant stories within architectural structures. While the scenography approximated the passage of light and shadow throughout the Forum, Tanowitz’s choreography allowed viewers to find their experience of movement, a reminder of our potential and that of the structures that surround us. This time-based experiment exposed the present as a visible echo of the past and the future. Renowned fashion designer Sybilla designed the costumes that functioned as mobile sculptures intervened by dancing bodies, while an original musical composition by Dan Siegler resonated with the sounds of the urban landscape while being remixed live. Lighting designer Davison Scandrett heightened the play of light and darkness, and the young students of the Miami City Ballet School reinforced the fusion of past and future, tradition and experimentation. Alan Faena and curator Ximena Caminos, Chair of Faena Art, hope to blur the traditional lines of art and performance by using the Forum as an “alchemical collaboratory” where artists and innovators will have space and freedom to dream, play and produce. “We will put all the best minds in the world to work to create a Utopian place,” Faena said as he cut the ribbon next to Len Blavatnik and Mayor Philip Levine. Inside the Forum itself, Argentinean artist Graciela Hasper unveiled a site-specific monumental mural and Iranian thinker Reza Negarestani kicked-off the ongoing Soledades program, a series of one-time-only performances from cultural practitioners across a broad scope of disciplines.
MADONNA AT FAENA FORUM On December 2nd, the world’s reigning Queen of Pop delivered an evening of unmatched art and entertainment in the name of charity, securing $7.5 million to benefit Raising Malawi. Alan Faena and Len Blavatnik were delighted to welcome Madonna for an evening of music, art, and mischief during the opening week’s ceremonies of the Faena Forum. Madonna hosted a special event during Art Basel Miami to benefit Raising Malawi, her non-profit organization dedicated to bettering the lives of impoverished children in the southeastern African nation through health, education and secure shelter. The crowd-pleasing concert Tears of a Clown included a raw performance of rarely-heard songs such as American Life and Beautiful Stranger. She mesmerized a star-studded audience of famous friends like ex-husband Sean Penn, who she flirted with from the stage, Ariana Grande who joined her for a twerking session, her former love interest Alex Rodriguez, and other A-list celebs like Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle, Sean Combs, Paris Hilton, among others. Equal parts artist, activist, and entertainer, Madonna got cheeky, political and sentimental while auctioning off items from her personal art collection and mementos from her past, including wedding pictures of her and Sean Penn, a Scott costume from a recent tour, and her Bulgari diamond necklace. While ticket prices ($5,000 for regular tickets, $150,000 for VIP access) and auction pieces certainly contributed to the night’s takeaway, it was Madonna’s passion and persistence that persuaded guests to “spend, baby, spend.” Galvanized by the realization that AIDS orphans more than a million children, Madonna committed herself to bringing awareness to the dire situation taking place in the home country of her two small children. Profits from the gala and auction are earmarked for staffing, supply, and support the organization’s most recent project, The Mercy James Pediatric Surgery Hospital in Malawi. In an evening scintillating with celebrity, music, art and entertainment, the world’s original material girl certainly brought generosity center stage.

Faena Bazaar Inspired by the spice markets of India, the bustling souks of Marrakech and the night markets of Southeast Asia, the groundbreaking Faena Bazaar presented a radically original retail experience under one roof during Miami Art Week.
L’EDEN BY PERRIER-JOUËT
Time Capsule Faena Art lit up the Miami Beach art scene during Art Basel with a giant Time Capsule activation on the sand. The colorful geodesic dome was designed by Argentine artist and visionary Juan Gatti, the same artist behind the stunning murals in Faena’s Cathedral. Chosen for his exceptional artistic vision, Juan Gatti designed the dome in an effort to take art off the wall and onto a setting that enveloped the audience and captivated their imagination, furthering Faena’s promise to present public, immersive, and multidisciplinary works. Visitors to the surreal orb were welcomed into a 360-degree artistic immersion unlike any other. Time Capsule hosted an ever-changing lineup of films, live performances, 360-degree projections, and virtual reality experiences. The Daily Front Row joined Faena to kick off Art Basel with a lively soirée celebrating the intersection of art and fashion, followed by a projection from Coral Morphologic that featured a parade of underwater scenes to raise awareness of the Earth’s endangered reef ecosystems. Surface Magazine also hosted a series of discussions with a wide array of influencers, from Virgil Abloh (Kayne West’s creative director) to RISD president Roseanne Somerson, fashion designer Heron Preston, art dealer Jeffrey Deitch and Diana Widmaier Picasso, granddaughter of Pablo Picasso. Time Capsule was free and open to the public, offering multiple performances like Marietta Ren’s first ever scrolling graphic novel, the Phallaina experience—which presented an imaginary world similar to ours, with stilted cities apprehensively awaiting the next tidal wave. The Time Capsule activation embodied Faena’s mission to find a balance between urban, social, political and environmental realms to protect the natural world for future generations.
REZA NEGARESTANI: “LOCALIZATION, RAMIFICATION, NAVIGATION” SOLEDADES INAUGURAL PRESENTATION As part of Faena’s mission to blur the traditional lines of art and performance, the Faena Forum has been designed as an alchemical collaboratory where artists and innovators will have space and freedom to dream, play and produce. Iranian thinker Reza Negarestani kicked-off the ongoing Soledades program at Faena Forum, a series of one-time-only performances
from cultural authorities across a broad scope of disciplines. Negarestani has contributed extensively to journals and anthologies and lectured at international universities and institutes. His philosophical project is focused on rationalist universalism, beginning with the evolution of the modern system of knowledge and advancing toward contemporary
philosophies of rationalism and their procedures, as well as their demands for special forms of human conduct. His book Cyclonopedia, known for pioneering the genre of “theory-fiction,” received critical acclaim. He is currently working on a manuscript on post-human intelligence and the philosophy of German Idealism entitled Intelligence and Spirit.
Hosted in the new OMA-designed four-floor emporium at 34th Street and Collins Avenue, the Bazaar stretched across nine days and nights, inviting shoppers and art enthusiasts to engage with the world’s most notable brands in an unconventional, experiential setting and preview the permanent retail installation that is to come.
Guests found themselves wandering through a highlycurated pop-up village featuring small-scale pocket shops with jewelry and accessories, high-end fashion boutiques, unique art installations, a dynamic roster of special events, live performances, and exclusive shopping experiences that attempt to redefine the concept of retail in this new interconnected digital age.
During Art Basel, iconic champagne house Perrier-Jouët opened the doors to L’Eden by Perrier-Jouët, which took place at the Faena District’s Casa Faena and became one of the most happening hotspots during the 2016 Miami Art Week. The celebration exalted the interaction of nature and design, and included mind-bending staged performances and lavish sensory experiences, drawing a crowd of over 300 guests, including Sex And the City star Sarah Jessica Parker who described the event as a “very extraordinary…rather singular night.”
Based on the belief that discovery is the true meaning of luxury, the Faena Bazaar is more than just a mall without walls; it is a haven for artists eager to deconstruct the existing retail model and build something revolutionary in its place. This year’s fashion partners included curators Kelly Framel and Zachary Lynd of Kizmet, Henrik Vibskob, Maison de Mode, Figue, L’Objet, and Carolina K as well as a Pedro Friedeberg mural installation, Tête-A-Tête Champagne bar, and virtual reality immersive theater experience by Punchdrunk. Faena Bazaar will officially debut in the spring of 2017.
A NEW REBIRTH Casa Faena enjoys a rich history, originally having opened its doors in 1930 as El Paraiso Apartments designed by architect Martin L. Hampton. Having traveled extensively in Spain, Hampton became a master of the Mediterranean Revival style and adapted his work to the Floridian landscape. Preserving the building’s Spanish Colonial character, Casa Faena features a stunning courtyard atrium, wrought iron balconies, elegant archways, garden terraces and terracotta touches. Its 50 sun-filled rooms and suites welcome guests to a new Miami Beach experience that combines art and leisure in an intimate, romantic atmosphere.

I was born in Moscow, Russia; my family comes from a very small town a few hours from the capital. I began training rhythmic gymnastics when I was six years old, spending 8-14 hours a day at the gym, continuously pushing my limits. By the age of 14, I had already won a national tournament and was part of the Olympic team, representing the country at different events, always recognized because of my flexibility and agility. I have my mom to thank for supporting me all these years; she always dreamed of becoming a ballerina, but back in the day it wasn’t easy. She and my father dedicated all their energy to help me develop, going as far as to create all my costumes by hand, with great attention to detail. Growing up I would watch Hollywood movies; and I knew that one day I would live in the United States. My wish was to live in a place where I could see the ocean from my window, somewhere that would never get cold. In 2009, I got invited to teach gymnastics in Miami, and I later transitioned into performing arts. I’m very passionate about art, music, and photography. To me, it’s all about aesthetics and Faena is a great platform to showcase my work. I feel very blessed to be part of this family, which continuously grows Miami’s cultural offering. It all seems like a dream.

Wine & Sign with Francis Mallmann Los Fuegos 6:30pm
In Conversation with Francis Mallmann What do you look for when choosing wine? I’m not very good at breaking down the flavors and smells of wine; I don’t pick a bottle because it has notes of cassis, bell peppers, this or that—I understand and enjoy different types of wine, but I’m not obsessed with its composition. When selecting wine you should do it from the heart, not by the book, taking into account where you will be drinking it and with whom. If that’s the case, how do you pair your food and wine? Harmony is for kids. You always have to convince a child that food is good, that it tastes great. As adults, we have to be more adventurous. I like it when flavors clash in your mouth, when you feel the unexpected. What’s the objective behind your event? The idea is to combine the signing of my cookbooks with the tasting of great food and this beautiful wine, Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge 2014. I will spend hours talking to the guests answering any questions they might have about cooking or me.
How did you get into poetry? Poetry grows on you; as a child I always liked words. I was a very bad student, but come Literature class, it was different. I enjoyed it. My first book was Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet. Then I read the writings of Herman Hesse and poems by Robert Frost, Emily Dickinson, T.S. Elliot before moving on to study the Russians; Pasternak, Mandelstam. I also like Jorge Luis Borges very much. The list goes on. What makes this genre so unique? The relation between thoughts and words is enormous; the most valuable asset we have is language. You can always take words with you; they take up any space. With poetry, you can touch people with words. It has the beauty of being able to be easily read (in three minutes you can be done, and get back to chopping onions) or you can spend hours trying to investigate the meaning behind each prose.

Visualizing Nietzsche or Socrates dancing is not the first image that springs to mind when thinking about the two philosophers. The first was a taciturn nihilist and the second a master of dialectic who always maintained a level-headedness amid discussions among political animals. However, the image in itself is one of the happiest and is based on reality. Nietzsche and Socrates danced, and their defense of dancing constitutes an irresistible temptation to move your body. We are all familiar with Nietzsche’s statements on god and dancing (“I would only believe in a god who could dance,”) but his work is overflowing with praise for this practice (Dionysian ballerinas, dancing satyrs, men, women and children who dance ceaselessly), while ha was a solitary dancer. For him, freedom is never more participative, in the sense that we can choose how to move with the flow of the world, as is the case with dancing. By dancing, one enters into the rhythm of things, of the wind, the pulse of life that is always the same but which is at the disposition of the free whims of the body. There lies its beauty. The body can choose how to participate in rhythm and gravity while the conscious ego is perfectly focused and relaxed, and the self leads to the sum of the parts in a game that is free of force. As Walt Whitman would declare incessantly in his poems, for the philosopher it is a stupidity to believe that the material body is a physical entity that
exists independently of the spirit. Even thinking, for him, was a physical activity: “Thinking wants to be learned as dancing wants to be learned, as a kind of dancing… Who is there […] who knows form experience that light shiver which spreads out to all muscles form light feet!” It is therefore not surprising that this lover of physical ecstasy would favor the lyrical over the discursive, and who would want his words to move with light feet—like his Zarathustra—and transcend their conventional meaning. It was more the movements of his great teacher Socrates that first showed him this great dance of reason. In the Symposium, Xenophon says that while Socrates observes the performance of a Syracusian dancer he was infatuated with their grace. In the harmony of their movements he saw himself as even more beautiful than he was in repose. Then, Socrates confesses that Charmides found him dancing alone and though that he was crazy, but when he described to him his intention to find harmony in his movements, Charmides began his own solitary practice of shadow boxing (because he didn’t know how to dance). This of course reminds us of the famous phrase by Nietzsche (and who perhaps imagined him from this anecdote): “And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music.” For Socrates, dance was the optimum way of moving the body in simultaneous symmetry with all of
FAENA.COM/ALEPH
its parts, unlike other kinds of physical exercise such as running or wrestling. The relationship between beauty (kalos) and the most beautiful (kallion) is one of movement and proportion. The philosopher, realizing that the body is much more beautiful and graceful in total movement than in simple repose, learned to dance as an old man, aged 70. We should remind ourselves that he also said: “Music and dance are two arts that complement each other and form the beauty and power that are the basis of happiness.” Both philosophers, who were also characteristically solitary, found happiness in dance. A happiness that can be understood by all those who have danced alone and have surrendered to the Dionysian forces that emerge from the depths to the surface of the body. It is true that it is not necessary that the dance be solitary, but it is more likely that in solitude the rigid clumsiness of self-consciousness and the ego will be momentarily suspended. The less the conscious ego is involved, the greater the agility of movement and freedom will be. We do not create the flow of the world or the gravitational forces, and we cannot abolish them. But we can dance with them. This is one of the great manifestations of the free will that has been given us: it is necessary to feel, even if just once in a while, all of the freedom of the body. The poet and critic Edwin Denby summed it up perfectly: “There is a bit of insanity in dancing that does everybody a great deal of good”. Let’s dance.

Live the Dream Inspired by the hotel’s glamorous past, where Marilyn Monroe frequently stayed and Frank Sinatra entertained the crowds, Alan Faena, Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin recreated the Faena Hotel Miami Beach into the beacon of luxury it once was. The Faena Residences crown the top two floors of the hotel and feature 12 one-of-a-kind penthouses and a stunning 14,000-square-foot five-bedroom Duplex Penthouse replete with 360-degree views, extensive entertaining spaces, and unbounded living. Overlooking Miami’s azure waters and white-sand beaches, the residences feature one to three bedrooms, spacious terraces and state-of-the-art appliances. Each penthouse is fully-equipped with full kitchens, master or secondary bedrooms with en suite baths and washer/dryers. Priority access is also provided to the hotel’s in-demand amenities including Faena Theater, the restaurants Los Fuegos and Pao, Faena Playa pool and beach club and the spa at Tierra Santa Healing House.
An address within the Faena District put residences in the heart of Miami’s cultural hub that has attracted the best and brightest architects and designers including Foster + Partners, Rem Koolhaas / OMA, Bazmark, and Raymond Jungles. The Faena Forum partners with artists from around the world to showcase artistic works, collaborations, and performances that are multicultural, multidisciplinary, and multi-dimensional. There’s also a regular roster of scintillating shows and live performances at The Living Room and Faena Theater. With such a fusion of creativity and passion, there’s never a dull moment in the Faena Universe. To request more information about Faena Residences, please dial the Sales Office at 4138.
