“First Faena Festival set the tone and raised the bar for Art Basel Miami” —VANITY FAIR

“This Is Not America” Leaves a Legacy The inaugural Faena Festival in Miami Beach invited the community to contemplate the concept of America through experimental installations and performances that explored the multiplicity of communities and cultures across the continent. “This is Not America addressed America as concept more than a place, a contested and powerful idea that is greater than the waters and borders that frame it,” says Zoe Lukov, curator for Faena Art. “Artists in the Festival were challenged to explore the concept of America as a myth and a narrative.” In exploring Miami as a place from which to speak to new ways of defining our global identities, Alfredo Jaar’s iconic work, A Logo for America, sailed the Miami Beach coastline on a giant LED billboard reminding us that we can co-exist across geopolitical boundaries, united by our similarities rather than our differences. Artist Derrick Adams’ interactive playground spoke to the history and urban development of Miami in the Jim Crow south, while Tavares Strachan’s neon installation, We Belong Here, contextualizes Miami as a bridge between North and South America. Luna Paiva’s bronze work, A Matter of Time, reflected on the fading symbols of the American Dream,

while the iconography of the suburban home was set ablaze in George Sánchez-Calderon’s thought-provoking How to Win Friends and Influence People installation. And perhaps the most significant totem of our culture, banknotes, were artistically reimagined through a Native American lens by Agustina Woodgate and Rev. Houston R. Cypress in Flow (Land Acknowledgment). “Our vision for the Faena Festival is to continue to commission new cutting-edge works of art and original programming that catalyze our culture and our communities” says Alan Faena. “Each future edition will have a unique concept that responds to our world; and I will develop working in collaboration with artists, thinkers and curators from all over the world.” Faena Art thanks Perrier-Jouët for its generous support of the inaugural Faena Festival. FAENA JOURNAL

In the Rear-View Mirror: Faena Festival’s Performances, Music, Screenings & Talk Series Faena Miami Beach transformed into an immersive cultural campus at the inaugural Faena Festival, amplifying a diversity of artists and voices. Spaces across the Faena District became creative venues for the public to digest specially commissioned works during Faena Festival, which was keyed to Miami’s enduring role as a port that welcomes migrants, refugees and tourists from around the world. Live performances choreographed by Cecilia Bengolea, a featured artist for the biennial 2019 Desert X exhibition, converted the Faena Forum into a contemporary temple with dances that hinged on the intersection of the sacred and profane, while Isabel Lewis’ heightened sensorial experience poses the question of how to flourish in tempestuous times. Impressionistic short films from conceptual filmmakers Boris Mitic and Eugene Jarecki drew applause, as did an inspiring panel on “Radical Play” in the Screening Room, while in the Faena Theater, Wu Tsang and boychild’s performance-film project tackled the tensions of colonialism, diaspora and “otherness” within the context of Miami’s opulence.

Electrifying beats from dynamic rising stars created layers of sound: Faena’s Tree of Life featured eclectic DJ sets from Hundred Waters, an electronica group whose sound The New York Times characterized as “a watercolor wash of possibilities,” and at Faena Theater, revelers swayed to the beats of MNROY at the Anonimo after party. The soul-stirring Healing Series in the Forum’s rose marble amphitheater opened hearts through enriching meditation and sound healings led by Agustina Caminos and renowned Pranic healer, Master Glenn Mendoza. The progressive trio, Mardeleva, concluded the festival with an elevated performance of multi-instrumental magic at Faena Theater. Faena Art thanks Perrier-Jouët for its generous support of the inaugural Faena Festival. For more information, visit www.faenafestival.com

Faena Bazaar Opens its Doors Faena Bazaar made its official debut during Miami Art Week, humming as a central hive that connects guests with vibrant artists and emerging designers. At the Casa Culture series presented by D’Usse, Jerome Lamaar sketched guests with staccato penciled strokes as a panel of artists and creatives, including Mickalene Thomas and Mauro Porcini, discussed their projects and processes in a salon-style chat, exchanging thoughts on society, social media and the intersection of art and culture. In the Bazaar courtyard, Felder & Felder led a solution-driven conversation focused on the importance of sustainability in fashion. Art’s accessibility was the goalpost for Donald Robertson, a suburban dad hailed as the “Andy Warhol of Instagram,” who live painted in the company of his son and debuted his Killah Cereal series. Lifestyle brand, Mor-

phew, catered to vintage lovers with a special exhibition and sale of Gianni Versace’s Miami collection featuring a range of ‘90s pieces from bathing suits and silk blouses to metal mesh gowns, as well as iconic dresses from his pop art and punk collections. Beyond Art Week, Faena Bazaar’s evolving spaces will showcase inclusive hands-on workshops like floral arrangement and bonsai creation, kid-friendly activities such as painting family crests, and guided meditations. ADRIANA IGLESIAS

Steeped in romance and the daydream of an endless summer come capsule collections from Adriana Iglesias. Rather than chasing trends or sartorial hype, Iglesias creates clothing that embodies the Mediterranean lifestyle with brightly-hued, splashy prints that draw inspiration from nature and life. She utilizes only the lushest of materials—like Italian silks and downy cashmere— creating classic pieces like baggy pants, robes and evening dresses as aspirational pieces that speak to the luxury lifestyle of today’s woman. Striking color combinations entice the eye, and exotic animal prints and lush blooms elevate the fabric, which is sourced directly from Europe. Simultaneously bohemian and boldly appealing, Adriana Iglesias’ body of work speaks for itself.

A Star Is Born Inspired by the Sanskrit word samsara, which refers to the cycle of death and rebirth, Faena Theater’s Samsara Cabaret recounts the rise and transformation of Artemis, a being made of stardust, as she makes an unforgettable voyage from darkness to light, becoming one with the limitless universe. Breakout star Bianca Allanic delivers a captivating performance as Artemis with a combination of classic ballet, contemporary dance and burlesque movements. “The mythology of the phoenix really inspires me in portraying the character,” said Allanic, a graduate of Miami’s prestigious New World School of the Arts. “The phoenix understands the impermanence of its current incarnation and takes on each new cycle

with wisdom, grace and power.” As Artemis moves through each phase, she learns from both good and evil forces to fundamentally understand the duality of life and the essential lesson of balance. “My performance is a representation of the internal struggles that come with life,” she says. “Everyone encounters good and bad experiences, and it’s ultimately the interplay of the two that helps you become your fully actualized self.”

Samsara Cabaret shows Wednesday through Saturday nights. A Fresh Start Leave negative energy in the year that’s gone by and open your heart to new beginnings at Tierra Santa Healing House.

HANDS ARE IN FOR 2019!

The Perfect Pairing

BY DR. ROBERTA DEL CAMPO TIERRA SANTA HEALING HOUSE WELLNESS COLLABORATOR

Los Fuegos’ impressive wine collection meets its match with new seasonal dishes and signature favorites.

Do your hands give away your age? Frequently the focus of cosmetic improvement is the face and neck, but one of the most age-telling body features is our hands. As we age, our hands show signs of aging just like our face. Further, brown “age” spots are common secondary to cumulative sun exposure. What can you do to improve the appearance? Let’s start with what you can do at home. The same products you use on your face can also be used on your hands. • Sunblocks containing mineral-based physical blockers should be applied on a daily basis. Physical blockers include titanium and zinc oxide. Regular use will help prevent further aging and keep the brown spots from darkening. • Consider a topical Vitamin C serum daily. This should be applied under your sunblock. Vitamin C is great for pigment lightening and also acts as an antioxidant to prevent collagen breakdown from damaging UV rays and air pollution. • Topical retinoids nightly will help stimulate collagen. Unlike your face, I would apply no more than every other night as hands are more sensitive and too frequent usage can lead to dryness and itching. In-office procedures will help further improve their appearance: • Serial superficial chemical peels. These will help exfoliate the skin, lighten sun spots and improve the overall texture of your skin. With consistent treatments, collagen will also be stimulated, meaning healthier skin! • Laser treatments will remove sun spots and stimulate collagen. The Aerolase Lightpod Neo is one of my favorite treatments for facial rejuvenation so the hands are a great add-on treatment. • Further, fillers immediately re-plump and replenish volume to the back of the hands to provide a supple and youthful appearance instantly. Placed beneath the skin, fillers raise the skin level so that tendons, joints and veins lose their prominence. Radiesse is my favorite product for this area as it is FDA approved for hand rejuvenation and in my experience gives the most natural and long-lasting results.

To book a consultation with Dr. Del Campo, please email spamiami@faena. com or call 786 655 5570. In-house guests may dial Tierra Santa at 3217 for more information.

This season at Tierra Santa, conquer blocked channels and harness energy fields during an introductory course to Pranic Healing on the weekend of January 12 & 13. Led by Spa Director Agustina Caminos, this powerful practice, based on the teachings of Master Choa Kok Sui, harmonizes the life-force known as prana, or chi, by manipulating the body’s energy processes to achieve greater emotional awareness, balance chakras and relieve physical ailments. On January 17, guests can tackle anxiety, unhappiness and emotional stress as they relate to generations of family trauma by participating in our Shamanic Family Constellations Workshop. Certified leader Eric Lopez, a shamanic practitioner and student of the renowned psychotherapist Bert Hellinger, guides this therapeutic group workshop to process unconscious familial conflict and distress, leading to profound release and transformation for participants. During the first full moon of the New Year on January 21, marriage and family therapist Inessa Freylekhman will lead a deep somatic meditation opening guests’ hearts to healing and abundance. “Our culture doesn’t really have proper rituals to mark the end of one

relationship journey and the beginning of the next,” she says. During a powerful meditation in a nurturing environment, Freylekhman will guide guests to connect to their true sources, let go of the past and heal from the pain of loss, expertly leading them to release old love and call in a new kind: self-love. In-house guests may dial Tierra Santa at 3217 to RSVP. For more information and reservations, please email spamiami@faena.com or call 786 655 5570. JAN

A CUT ABOVE A fresh new look for a fresh new year. Starting a new year is all about change and transformation. Rossano Ferretti Salon’s team of expert stylists are on hand to help you shed the old, take risks and color yourself anew. “A gourmet meal without a glass of wine just seems tragic to me somehow,” professed American country music singer Kathy Mattea. At Los Fuegos restaurant, the brainchild of prolific Argentine chef Francis Mallmann, grilled fare and full-bodied Malbecs are the showstoppers on the menu. To compliment the restaurant's mouthwatering fare, Faena's lead sommelier, Dragan Culibrk, recommends pairing a Sancerre Sauvignon Blanc with an appetizer of wood-oven baked empanadas and a pink grapefruit salad. “The wine is light, clean and crisp with a very zippy acidity that goes with the citrus vinaigrette dressing,” he notes. When it comes to the main course, he suggests ordering the Meat Parillada, a mix of

grilled ribeye and skirt steak, lamb, sweetbreads, chorizo and blood sausage with charred kale. “This medley pairs perfectly with our private- label Faena Malbec grown at 4,000 feet in Mendoza’s Uco Valley, which has notes of dark red fruits, herbaceousness and long ripe finish.” For dessert, Culibrk selects a Las Perdices Ice Malbec from Mendoza that combines wonderfully with chocolate and dulce de leche for its notes of preserved figs, jammed plums and toasted almonds. Buen provecho! In-house guests may dial the Concierge at 4037 for more information. Reservations can be made at 786 655 5600.

A MOST DECADENT DELIGHT Upping the ante of lavish fare in The Living Room, exquisite Russian caviars speak to nothing short of divine inspiration. Executive Chef Cornel Ruhland marries exquisite Caspian Osetra and Siberian caviar with top shelf spirits and unexpected bites. “The Caspian Osetra is one of the rarest gourmet foods on earth,” comments the chef. “It has a medium grain with a nutty full flavor while tasting of the sea at the same time.”

Pao’s Mythic Unicorns The fabled allure of the unicorn swirls at the center of Pao, Miami Beach’s most imaginative restaurant.

Turner Prize-winning artist Damien Hirst’s Golden Myth unicorn sculpture rises proudly at the center of Pao restaurant: one half plated in shining gold, the other exposed to show the animal’s arresting musculature. Inspired by the power of legend and the creative genius of Hirst, star chef Paul Qui unites culinary magic with sensory splendor in his signature Unicorn dish featuring decadent lobes of earthy uni and creamy sweet corn pudding served in a spiky shell of a sea urchin on top

a bed of red peppercorn. It’s liquid soul mate: The Myth cocktail, a tropical, toast-worthy elixir of tangy and tart fruit liqueurs (think cherry, pineapple, lemon and coconut) mixed with Absolut Elyx and ginger syrup. Served in a striking, copper unicorn vessel, this libation is the last word in enchantment. In-house guests may dial the Concierge at 4037 for more information. Reservations can be made at 786 655 5600.

The Siberian Sturgeon caviar, special in its own right, has a delicate smaller bead and a full briny flavor. “Both pair perfectly with a true Russian vodka like Stolichnaya Elite or Beluga served directly from the freezer in a frozen glass, neat,” he adds. The decadent menu also offers a caviar and champagne combo that matches up Siberian Sturgeon with a Perrier-Jouët Belle Epoque Brut 2011, and Gold Osetra with a full-bodied Dom Pérignon Brut 2006. “When pairing, our goal is to make sure there is perfect harmony.”

just looking for a pick-me-up polish after the holidays, the salon offers specials on professional cuts, root color, highlights, hair masks, and blow outs. Let’s face it: it’s a lot easier to keep New Year’s resolutions when you look and feel great.

Chef Ruhland also had a hand in the assortment of creative caviar bites that look as good as they taste, including Peruvian chips combined with sturgeon roe and fresh sour cream, a twice-baked potato with truffle and caviar, and Ahi Tuna tartar with Osetra and Yuzu cream.

On the Art of Embracing New Beginnings

The possibility or the obligation to redefine our existence is one of the most natural, humanely beautiful acts. "A new heart for a New Year, always!". –Charles Dickens Before the radical and singular event of death, life induces small, timely, necessary deaths to guide us to assume —whether by choice or omission— some of our possibilities. And among these decisive events in our personal histories, there are various types of circumstances. The beginnings and the ends, which are two sides of the same door, are embedded in the extraordinary of the quotidian, in the moments that we take for granted, such as going to sleep and waking up each morning. But to truly feel those potential new beginnings it is necessary to remember “the forgotten amazement of being alive,” as Octavio Paz put it, and leaving behind the inertia that drags us on, day

to day. Perhaps that is why we have created social conventions which are very similar to the cyclical movement of the planet, to the change in season, to our physical evolutions. Each of us has a birthday, and as a whole, a new year and four season changes. Each date is an opportunity to breathe in the air and refocus our gaze. If there is something we have learned over time it is that human beings need to measure their life in stages; otherwise, it is very likely they will lose meaning and their vertigo will be greater, more paralyzing, than their drive to move forward. Our ability to let go is, without a doubt, the most essential and the most difficult of all, but finds strength in the ceremonies. And the fact that the New Year, for example, is a social consensus, doesn’t make it

Now, there are moments in each person’s life when ending and recommencing are unavoidable events, and in which life can be heard more clearly than ever. These moments often occur after a breakup, a death or a major betrayal. But they may also arise as the result of an urgency to tackle the road we have been ignoring for so long and is palpitating so hard we can no longer postpone it. Sometimes even traumatic events are the opportunity we require for, finally, as Rilke would say— act with beauty and courage. Each person goes through one of these moments —if not several— and while they can be profoundly painful, they are the true turning points in our history, and the last call to let go of the life we planned and tried to manipulate at our convenience, and embrace the life that awaits us.

Amid these events of tremendous finitude and birth, we have the opportunity to not turn the page as in a birthday, but rather change the book entirely. And we have to stop to breathe. Beginnings are X-rays of endings. Thus, in the liminal space between one thing and another, which might be quite uncomfortable and long, we understand which parts have to be cast away forever and which ones are good foundations for what is to come. That is why we require absolutely all the patience and courage that we have foreseen in our spirit; new capacities for compassion and beauty; but mostly we require a sense of lightness and creativity which, although unprecedented in our life, occurs at that time and place because its always been there. New reefs and the secret gardens of octopuses are often born in shipwrecks.

less true but ever more powerful. When so many people around the world identify a calendar date with the same meaning (in this case a marked end and beginning), this date becomes what we attribute to it. The New Year is already a portal of individual and planetary change, regardless if we have resolutions, regardless if we fulfill them or not. On January 1st the world is a little cleaner than the day before, a little less inert. Without those symbolic cleansings, which infuse us with a little bit of bravery, the daily occurrence of life would lose its motivation along the way —the motivation that, by definition, requires constant renewal.
