A Summer of Soul at Faena Theater Faena Theater and American Airlines have partnered up to present five months of outstanding jazz performances from the industry’s top talent and up-and-coming musicians who are quickly making a name for themselves.

LIVE ENTERTAINMENT AT THE LIVING ROOM & THE SA XONY BAR THE LIVING ROOM NIGHTLY EVENING ACTS FROM 8:00PM •

Jazz Up Your Summer at Faena Theater with Singer Veronica Swift Acclaimed jazz singer Veronica Swift and The Shelly Berg Trio join Faena Theater’s third annual Summer Jazz Series on June 19 to wow music lovers and jazz aficionados alike. Swift has been a jazz singer since childhood. “It was my way of life since day one, my first language so to speak,” says the artist whose parents are both successful jazz musicians. She began singing professionally with industry greats at 9 years old, and this summer the songstress will serenade the audience with her award-winning musical mastery. Guests can expect an exciting reunion for Swift and Berg from their years together at the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami. The young singer, inspired by the likes of Nina Simone, Freddy Mercury and Lady Gaga, is looking forward to returning

to Magic City with a few lyrical surprises up her sleeve. “I won’t give specific songs away, but I will say that while I do sing American songbook, my favorite thing to do is pull out more obscure songs that have gotten buried through the decades.”

Veronica Swift with The Shelly Berg Trio Faena Theater 8:00 pm

June welcomes back some of our favorite live performers and DJs, including Sir Portela, American Gipsy, Javier Garcia, Yamit and the Vinyl Blvd, Mi Dulce Son, Songs From Space, The Usual Suspects Ft. Keba, Alejandro Elizondo Trio, Steph Michaels Band, Jahzel Dotel, The French Horn Collective, Louis Amanti, Nu Grau Trio, DJ Funky Therapy, DJ Richie Hell, DJ Mojody, DJ Sire, DJ Giovanetti, DJ Kora Noir, DJ Diego Ciaramella, DJ DiscoRocks, and DJ Fabian Giannattasio, among many others.

For the third year in a row, Faena is bringing headlining acts in the jazz world to its stage. The third annual Summer Jazz Series kicked off this May with 13-year-old piano prodigy Brandon Goldberg, who performed hits from his debut album, “Let’s Play!” Goldberg has been hailed by critics and fellow musicians alike, including composer/pianist Monty Alexander who said, “Along with all of the cleverness, the sophistication and the tasteful choices, this young man is swinging—swinging hard.” Another teen prodigy pianist, Matthew Whitaker, will enchant a rapt audience with his unique musical style and prodigious forte that earned him a performance at fellow blind musician Stevie Wonder's Hall of Fame induction at Carnegie Hall

when he was just 10 years old. Soulful singer Veronica Swift will take center stage with friend, former professor and Grammy nominee Shelly Berg and the Shelly Berg Trio. Together, they’ll play beloved classics with a few surprises sprinkled in from different decades of jazz. Aficionados may remember Alicia Olatuja from an outstanding performance during President Obama’s second inauguration. Concert-goers can be sure she’ll bring what the New York Times calls, “a strong and luscious tone,” to her Faena performance. Latin Jazz icon and Grammy-nominated percussionist Sammy Figueroa will close out the concert series in September alongside His Latin Jazz Explosion featuring Venezuelan songbird Maria Rivas.

El Secreto, the speakeasy Thursday night party at Saxony Bar, returns for a little late-night magic you can’t find anywhere else in Miami. What’s “the secret” behind El Secreto? Faena host Alisha Talbot. She invites a sophisticated guest list of partygoers to start the weekend early with “feel-good funk” surrounded by the lustrous beauty of Miami Beach’s best-looking Art Deco bar. The talented DJ Yissel spins singalong hits by Marvin Gaye and Michael Jackson, getting the

Chef’s Choice In June, James Beard Award-winning chef Paul Qui will host the fourth installment of this year’s Omakase series at Pao.

PAO SATIATES YOUR SUMMER APPETITE Pao's chef de cuisine, Benjamin Murray, dishes on the must-try plates gracing Pao's new summer menu — a speciallypriced, multi-course menu featuring new Pao creations and signature dishes available throughout June and July.

Mushrooms are the star of this month’s menu, a standout ingredient chosen by Qui and Pao’s Chef de Cuisine, Benjamin Murray, for its dynamic “umami” flavor, a Japanese term associated with earthy and savory tastes. “People love omakase because you don’t know exactly what to expect,” says Murray. “It’s usually a communal experience where you meet others who are just as into food as you are.” Omakase literally translates to respectfully leaving another to decide what is best, or in gastronomic terms, chef’s selection. When entrusting the mushroom-inspired menu to chef Qui, diners can expect an innovative selection of Asian-inflected dishes that showcase his iconic culinary creativity.

Food, Family & Father’s Day at Los Fuegos Feast with your family man this Father’s Day at Faena’s signature Sunday Asado barbecue at Los Fuegos, followed by an afternoon of pure relaxation on sunny Miami Beach. As music colors the air and fresh breezes drift across the veranda, Dads can kick back with complimentary cigars, hand-rolled on site. Unlimited mimosas, Bloody Marys, and sangria flow on request, ensuring fathers and families alike soak up the festive atmosphere. Fire-roasted fare from the mouthwatering Argentine buffet guarantees that the most special man in your life will eat like a king. The abundant oven-baked bread and empanadas station dishes up flakey pastries both sweet and savory—tempt dad with such delights as cinnamon pecan rolls with

pecorino cheese and caramelized onion empanadas. Celebrate the flavors of summer with an extensive array of salads, including a pink grapefruit salad adorned with fresh avocado, Parmesan Reggiano and toasted hazelnuts. A sybaritic selection of delicious delicacies from the sea, chilled on ice, include poached jumbo prawns, tuna tartare and Alaskan crab legs. The main event is the iron dome, a traditional Argentine cooking instrument fashioned by Los Fuegos’ grilling sensation Francis Mallmann. This time-honored method of asado cooking over a live fire lends

tenderness and irresistible flavor to choice cuts like “ojo de bife” slowcooked ribeye, grilled lamb racks and whole-roasted pork. After an unforgettable brunch, families from near and far can gather on Faena’s oceanfront lounge chairs and spend a fun afternoon relaxing in the sun and splashing in the surf with a complimentary Faena Beach day pass.

Father's Day Sunday Asado Los Fuegos by Francis Mallmann 12:00 - 4:00 pm

“Chef Paul always has surprises up his sleeve, even for us all in the kitchen!” Murray says. “He is an emotional cook, so he will often add an ingredient or even a course that we weren’t originally planning on. It definitely keeps it exciting.” In-house guests may dial the Concierge at 4037 for more information. Reservations can be made at +1 786 655 5600. JUN

The binchotan-grilled Toro appetizer with ramps, green grapes and honshimeji mushrooms is a list-topper. “We create a vinaigrette with pickled ramps (wild onion), ramp top oil and buttermilk,” Murray says. “It’s amazing!” For small plates, order the Watermelon Nam Tok. “It’s a traditional Thai salad. Instead of meat, we marinate watermelon, then grill and glaze it to mimic beef using lots of fresh herbs, crispy shallots, candied peanuts, and fish-sauce vinaigrette.” The entree of Smoked Shortrib Asado is a perennial favorite not to miss. It’s a nostalgic recipe that represents the barbeque flavor of Chef Qui’s Texas roots, but done in a modern, Filipino-inspired way with hints of fish caramel and slow-cooked for 72 hours. “It looks so simple, but it takes us days to create.”

Pao’s summer menu is available from June 5 through July 31, 2019. Priced at $55 per person, exclusive of tax and service charge. In-house guests may dial the Concierge at 4037 for more information. Reservations can be made at +1 786 655 5600.

CULINARY PLEASURES

Caviar cavaliers can head to The Living Room every Monday evening to savor the ‘breath of the sea’ with top-shelf spirits, creative accompaniments and stellar entertainment. Executive Chef Cornel Ruhland has built an exquisite tasting menu around Caspian Sea-imported Gold and Classic Osetra and Caviar Russe Malossol. Guests can sample Siberian sturgeon with a Perrier-Jouët Belle Epoque

Brut 2011, and Gold Osetra with a full-bodied Dom Perignon Brut 2006. “When pairing, our goal is to make sure there is perfect harmony," says Ruhland, who helped curate the assortment of delicious caviar bites that look as good as they taste. Join us on Monday evenings for selections like Peruvian chips combined with sturgeon roe and fresh sour cream, a twice-baked potato with truffle and caviar, and bluefin tuna with Osetra and yuzu cream.

A Day of Namaste

PREVENTION IS THE KEY

A FAEN-TASTIC FATHER’S DAY

BY DR. ROBERTA DEL CAMPO TIERRA SANTA HEALING HOUSE WELLNESS COLLABORATOR

Pamper the fathers in your life in true Faena fashion with a weekend of activities tailored just for him.

Just because Melanoma Awareness Month is officially over, it doesn't mean you should ignore this potentially deadly cancer. Not only do I recommend an annual skin exam by a board certified dermatologist, I also recommend monthly self-skin exams at home. Simply stand in front of a full length mirror and examine your skin head to toe. Can't look at the back of your legs or your back? Purchase a large hand mirror to help. Do you know what you are looking for? Knowing the ABCDs of melanoma could save your life. A=Asymmetry. One half does not match the other half. B=Border. An irregular, scalloped or poorly defined border. C= Color. Varied color or various shades of color from one area to another. D=Diameter or Difference. Diameter larger than 6 mm (size of a pencil eraser) can signify a higher risk of melanoma. Further, if the lesion is different (the "ugly duckling") than any other lesion, this should serve as a possible warning sign. With these simple guidelines you can help promote early detection and be well on your way to maintaining healthy skin!

Book Faena Hotel's exclusive Father's Day Getaway package to set him up in a spacious junior suite overlooking the ocean. With a $50 resort credit, he can treat himself to a top-shelf whiskey, destress with spa treatment, or sharpen his barbecue skills with an expert-led Grilling Masterclass led by Los Fuegos' chef de cuisine, Sebastian Benitez. If he'd prefer to eat than cook, book him a table at Los Fuegos' annual Father's Day Asado before lazing away the day at Faena Beach. Or hop in one of Faena Hotel's Alfa Romeo house cars to cruise the sunny streets of Miami Beach in classic Italian style.

Shed your Spiritual Baggage Tierra Santa Healing House has a high-vibe calendar of healing modalities this month, from mindfulness workshops and a Shamanic Family Constellations session to full moon and Father’s Day meditations.

Faena’s daily yoga classes are an integral part of the spa’s philosophy to “achieve illumination, or ‘unity’ in spirit, mind and body,” says Spa Director Agustina Caminos, a certified yoga instructor and pranic healer. “Yoga gives meaning to one’s life. When you realize you are a spiritual being manifesting in a mental, emotional and physical body, you realize you are one with the universe and that we are here to evolve, and help others to do so.” For guests who want their faces to reflect the happiness in their hearts, they can spend time with Gary Sikorski learning his 30-minute daily facial toning routine focused on “muscle-resistance” techniques to increase blood circulation, which helps to increase collagen and elastin in the skin. A new study published in the Journal of American Medical Association, conducted by Northwestern University

Feinberg School of Medicine, found that the estimated average patient age appearance decreased almost three years over the course of the study. “Practicing the exercises on a daily basis for an extended period of six to 10 weeks helps to make the shape of the face fuller, soften fine lines, widen eyes, lift cheeks and strengthen the jawline,” says Sikorski. In-house guests may dial Tierra Santa at 3217 to reserve their spots. For more information and spa bookings, please email spamiami@faena.com or call +1 786 655 5570. JUN

The Discreet Charm of Secret Gardens

Entertainment

First Call. Casa Faena 4:00 pm- 7:00 pm DJ Set. The Living Room from 8:00 pm

I want to be with those who know secret things or else alone. —Rainer Maria Rilke In gardening there are combinations so fortuitous they become metaphors—like metaphors, they help us to inhabit the world and perhaps catch a glimpse of its folds and mysteries. One of these is the secret garden. The Guardian* recently revealed a list of secret gardens scattered throughout the United Kingdom, and while at first it may seem futile, the list includes two elements that now appear to be fundamental for us: marvel and refuge. And ‘secrets aren’t discovered unless they’re required,’ Joseph Campbell would say. A secret garden is technically any garden hidden from the public eye, and which has been conceived for such. Unlike private gardens, which exist for the enjoyment of their owners, a secret garden is a piece of land by and for itself, a complete natural domain that isn’t part of a residence, with an entryway that is also hidden behind its foliage. Margaret Atwood said: “Whatever is silenced will clamor to be heard, though silently.” Thus the secret garden awaits to be revealed, to be read. The simple fact that it is hidden awakens in humans an innate impulse to pay attention, to discover with one’s sight, smell, hearing and touch everything

It can be said that among humans there are two types of secrets: those kept with deceitful purposes and those that are revealed to him like an epiphany. The secret garden belongs to the latter, but it also creates a third type: a secret which one can enter with his entire body. Secret gardens protect us from the world as they open-up for us in silence, like an epiphany. The best thing is that by merely imagining one, its very concept of natural setting, closed off like a dream, gives a sense of immediate solace. Secret gardens are a place of relief.

The world is full of secret gardens. Perhaps because of the same reason Campbell mentions, some of them are emerging now, clamoring to be heard. We might be at a time in history when it’s necessary to think about secret gardens, to go in search of one. We are all invited to that metaphorical, lush and secret place where solitudes meet, protect and greet themselves.
