Faena Festival Makes Its Mark in Buenos Aires After a successful inauguration during Miami Art Week, the Faena Festival debuted in Argentina last month. Partnering with the Government of the City of Buenos Aires, Art Basel Cities, and arteBA, one of the largest contemporary art fairs in Latin America, “This Is Not America” explored how we choose to define our sense of place in ways that transcend—and even resist—the imposition of physical, historical and political borders.

"The Faena Festival is the ultimate incarnation of my dream to build a platform for artists to explore and create in a hybrid and multidisciplinary format. The festival identifies and supports the newest, boldest and most cutting-edge artists from around the world.” —Alan Faena

Through commissioned installations and performances that were unveiled alongside arteBA, Art Basel Cities and with the Ministry of Culture, the festival explored Buenos Aires’ influential role as a port city that has long received immigrants, refugees and travelers, and addressed the continent of America as a concept more than a place—a powerful idea that is greater than the borders that frame it. "Artists are not limited by geopolitical divisions, so we decided to explore different interpretations of what unites Americans,” said Faena. Reinforcing its commitment to creating cutting-edge, large-scale works that are free and open to the public, the festival put forth a polyphonic platform to amplify creative voices across a range of artistic genres.

Critically acclaimed pieces from artists Cecilia Bengolea and Isabel Lewis, featuring collaborations with local performers, took place at La Rural, a historic exhibition center in the heart of Palermo, while Alfredo Jaar’s “A Logo for América” was presented for the first time in Latin America on a jumbotron in 9 de Julio Avenue. Other installations and performance commissions included those by Luna Paiva and Fernando Rubio. The festival also hosted a cinema series with works by Joseph buys, Ana Teresa Fernandez, Boris Mitic, Amalia Ulman, Martin Legon and Clara Cullen.

Brunch, Beach and Bloody Marys Sunday brunch is always a good idea. But at Los Fuegos, we always take the experience further: after a decadent procession of grilled fare from the mind of master chef Francis Mallmann, guests receive a day pass to Faena’s exclusive beachfront, where they can lounge post-meal on chaise lounges under candy-striped umbrellas. Los Fuegos’ new Sunday Asado Brunch will kick off on Mother's Day with a celebratory feast prepared by Mallmann himself. Guests will enjoy live music on the restaurant's Veranda and mothers will receive a $25 gift card to Faena Bazaar. Cheers your nearest and dearest with bottomless sangria, mimosas and Bloody Marys over a palatable parade of sweet and sa-

vory empanadas, salt-crusted wild salmon, an ice bar glistening with delicacies plucked from the sea, fresh salads, and of course, a mouthwatering array of asado meats, many of them slow-grilled before your eyes over Mallmann’s signature six-foot iron rod grilling dome. Sink your teeth into a showstopping dining experience this May when star Argentine grill master Francis Mallmann continues his Fire Dome Series with an exclusive vegetarian and vegan dinner under the stars at Faena’s Mammoth Garden. Guests are invited to feast not just with their bellies but also their eyes as mouthwatering fare is slow-cooked over a hypnotic live fire on a traditional ‘asado’ iron dome. And in May, there’s extra cause for celebration: guests fortunate enough to snag a seat at Faena’s Fire Dome affair will be treated to an exclusive peek at Mallmann’s new heart-healthy, rustic recipes gracing the pages of his upcom-

ing vegetarian cookbook. Faena Rose guests will enjoy a private cocktail reception prior to the meal, before they gather al fresco with fellow epicures at a long communal table fronting artist Damien Hirst’s largerthan-life gold leaf mammoth. Mallmann will serve locally-sourced produce and seafood roasted right before their eyes, putting a fiery spin on the concept of dinner as theater.

A Brief Genealogy of the Unicorn For centuries and even today, humanity has not given up its attempts to recreate this mythical creature. Various museums of history and medieval art, such as The Cloisters in New York or the Cluny Museum in Paris, have unicorn horns in their collections. They are very long, around two meters, and of a material similar to ivory that follows a spiral pattern to the tip. If one doesn’t read the explanation and remember that in the Middle Ages there was no plastic or 3D printing, it is hard to comprehend the origin of the object. If we try and put ourselves in the mind of somebody medieval, in northern France, for example, it’s almost impossible to not imagine that this is really a unicorn’s horn.

texts mentioned the karkadann, a mythical creature similar to a buffalo but with a single horn on its forehead. Its horn also began to sweat when put close to poison. It is likely that the karkadann described by Al-Biruni, an 11th century traveler, was a rhinoceros, whose horn is considered an aphrodisiac in Asia. One theory is that the rhinoceros ate poisonous plants and therefore it was believed that its (poisonous) horn would work as an antidote, under the premise that the same thing cures itself.

"The Natural History of Unicorns" by Chris Lavers explains how various animals could have given rise to the unicorn myth. In his detective-like work, the author traces the history of the horns, which were often referred to as alicorns (to avoid repetition in phrases such as ‘the horn of the unicorn.’) Those found in churches and museums are really narwhal tusks, which were very popular in the Middle Ages among nobles and the clergy, for whom the unicorn had a direct relationship with the figure of Christ. It is said that one of those horns could cost the same as an entire city. They were obtained from Arab merchants and Vikings, because narwhals lived in the Arctic at that time, and sometimes traveled as far as northern Germany or England.

But it is also possible that the curative properties attributed to the alicorn had something to do with an ingredient that, it was said, began to sweat in the presence of the venom: khutu. There does not appear to have been consensus in the Middle Ages regarding khutu. There are those who say it is an ingredient extracted from a bull’s horn, and others say that it comes from the horn of a giant snake; others that it is the horn of a fish or of a bird. An ingredient of this mythological soup could be the walrus which, as it spends a lot of time in the water, was for some a fish, and which the Chinese considered to be a millenary snake. Another could be a mammoth’s tusk, which could be found in Siberia and China, and another could be to do with the roc fish, a fantastical creature so fierce that it fed on elephants.

Sold as powder made with animal bones as early as the 16th century, alicorns were famous for one specific property. It was said that if poison were brought near the horn it would begin to sweat. It is possible, Lavers says, that that idea reached the Europeans from the Arabs, whose

In 1630, Danish professor Ole Wurm revealed that the so-called unicorn’s horn came from a northern sea creature. One might think that would have diminished the belief in the unicorn, but it only encouraged it. At that time it was believed that many animals had a marine counter-

"Virgin and Unicorn" by Domenichino

part, and therefore the land unicorn could still be out there somewhere. Science did not give up on the unicorn until the mid-19th century, when it was explained that animals with trotters had a brain divided into two and therefore it was unable to have two horns. In a translation from a 12th century bestiary by T.H. White, he relates that he tried an experiment in which the horns were cut off a male calf and transplanted together onto the forehead. The bull grew stronger than normal bulls, became leader of the herd and at the same time was gentle and docile, similar to descriptions of the unicorn. Faith is a strange beast. Like hope, it adapts to all kinds of adverse challenges. There is something in the symbol of the unicorn that has survived until today and which makes people chase it, follow it and reconstruct it. Unicorns represent purity, magic and kindness while being both wild and impossible to define. Their existence surpasses the limits of the mere animal. The unicorn survives much further beyond that because its archetype survives. Although the origins of the unicorn could be found in other legends and animals, it is possible that their real origin is located within the human mind. As the human psyche has made it possible to invent God it is therefore comprehensible and almost necessary to think that it also invented the unicorn. It is inevitable therefore that we continue to search for it and create it.

Published by Rizzoli, the book tells the story of Mr. Faena in 240 pages, from his childhood in Argentina to his years as a model, designer, gardener in Uruguay and his role in the transformation of urban landscapes. Mr. Faena began his career in fashion when he founded Via Vai, a brand known for its irreverent and colorful designs, that—in a time when Argentina was coming out of the dark times of a dictatorship—became an icon of self-expression and freedom among young people, “I never thought of myself as a fashion designer” said Alan Faena, “it just happened to be the mean of expression that was closer to me at that time”. After much success, he later sold the company and retreated to the coast of Uruguay in Punta del Este to grow a garden of roses— something that many believed impossible to do—and after two years of retreat in Tierra Santa (the name of his house in Uruguay), he realized he still had much to give to the world, and devised the idea of creating a multifunctional cultural destination in the then-abandoned docklands of Buenos Aires. Time passed, and Mr. Faena turned his attention to Miami, as he fell in love with its

unique culture, its glamour and its sense of familiarity. Again, he transformed a forgotten neighborhood into a lively destination, featuring two hotels, a multi-disciplinary space—the Faena Forum— a retail building—Faena Bazaar—and a series of condominium units. When asked about what was his actual source of inspiration, he simply replied “Love”. All these topics and others filled the conversation, lead by Tina Brown, an award-winning journalist, editor author and founder of Tina Brown Live Media, who was previously editor-in-chief of Tatler, Vanity Fair, The New Yorker, and is also the author of the best-selling biography of the Princess of Wales, The Diana Chronicles and of last year's The Vanity Fair Diaries. She is also host of the podcast TBD with Tina Brown. In 2000, Ms. Brown was awarded the Commander of the Order of the British Empire by the Queen for her services to journalism. The book is available for purchase at the Spa Boutique in Miami. Also available for online purchase at www.rizzolibookstore.com ISBN 9780847865352

May Week (May 18 to 25) commemorates a chain of events that led Argentine citizens to rebel against the Spanish crown and oust Viceroy Baltasar Hidalgo de Cisneros in Buenos Aires to create a self-governing administration on May 25, 1810. This revolutionary act sparked an eight-year struggle for independence that was ultimately won under the leadership of Argentine general José de San Martín. The national holiday is feted with asado barbecues and a range of traditional criolla dishes that date back to the late 18th century when indigenous staples fused with Spanish cuisine. Faena Hotel Buenos Aires is celebrating with a weeklong patriotic menu in El Mercado (May 21 – 27) featuring characteristic recipes like empanadas criollas, humita and Locro de Chacra (a traditional stew), followed by sweet desserts like quince and fruity pastries.
