Faena Festival Launches During Miami Art Week This is Not America engages the entire Faena District and extends beyond into public spaces of the city of Miami Beach as an experiential platform. Taking place December 3-9, This is Not America explores Miami’s enduring role as a port city welcoming migrants, refugees and tourists of every background and country. “It has always been my dream to have our international cultural festival —a polyphonic platform to amplify voices, bringing together practitioners from different artistic fields. Artists are not limited by geopolitical divides, so in this inaugural edition we’ve decided to explore diverse interpretations of the Americas, what unifies and ultimately connects us. Each future edition will have a unique theme, organized under a different concept that I personally find relevant and will develop working in collaboration with the worlds most recognized and emerging talents, artists , thinkers and curators,” stated Alan Faena. Works in the festival reflect the continuities and changes across the Americas—from South to North—based on shared histories and the interchange of contemporary cultures. “By challenging and subverting the monolithic and hegemonic idea of America and presenting it instead as a polyphonic place for

a multiplicity of voices and movements, these artists reimagine what America can and should be; as well as who we are, where we have come from, and who we want to become,” Faena Art’s Curator Zoe Lukov said. Anchoring the festival is Alfredo Jaar’s 1987 work, A Logo for America, a huge electronic billboard featuring the text “This is Not America” emblazoned across a map of the U.S. that morphs into an outline of the entire western hemisphere from a variety of perspectives, challenging how we traditionally view the Americas. Derrick Adams will create a piece on Faena Beach that responds to the history and urban development of Miami—especially in relation to ownership, real estate and city planning. Tavares Strachan’s We Belong Here is both an affirmation, a veiled question and reclamation that in appropriating the iconic neon signage of Miami’s deco drive asks to reimagine how we define place. In Cecilia Bengolea’s site-specific commission is an installation and performance created for the Faena Forum. The dancers bodies collect and

reinterpret folkloric, traditional, contemporary and popular gestures, towards the creation of an entirely new kind of embodied language. Utilizing the body as an archive that interacts with light and video, Bengolea moves us towards a corporeal slang for the creation of new dialogue. Also included in the Festival: Isabel Lewis’ sense-stimulating Occasion which includes Miami-based dancers and just as many locally sourced plants and trees; Luna Paiva’s new work that memorializes and creates a monument to the detritus of the American dream; and Wu Tsang’s site-specific operatic performance-film project that takes as its starting point the tensions of colonialism, diaspora and “otherness” particularly within the context of Miami’s opulence and decadence. Faena Art thanks Perrier-Jouët for their generous support of the inaugural Faena Festival. For more information, visit www.faenafestival.com

THE MUSICAL HEART OF SAMSARA CABARET These are the talented artists who come together to create the sound behind Samsara Cabaret at Faena Theater. An unprecedented combination of experience and artistry produces a spectacle unlike anything you’ve seen before. Shane Borth lights up the stage with his electric violin. The classically trained composer hailing from Kansas City is well-versed in various styles, including rock, jazz, folk, swing, and bluegrass, bringing unbridled verve to Samsara. Benjamin Muñoz rocks in concert with Borth on his cello. The award-winning Missouri native is no stranger to composing either—he’s co-written three full-length ballets for Pittsburgh’s largest theaters.

Giving voice to the melodies are two female lead vocalists. Born in Cuba and raised in Miami, EnVee’s show-stopping voice infuses Samsara performances with unmistakable hints of her gospel, jazz and opera roots. Yoli Mayor, a semifinalist from America’s Got Talent, delivers soulfully stirring vocals reminiscent of Amy Winehouse and Etta James. Together, these powerhouse performers promise an unforgettable journey exuding authenticity, heart and passion.

Samsara Cabaret Debuts at Faena Theater

Enthrall your eyes and taste buds with cosmic majesty at Faena Theater’s new show: Samsara Cabaret. Get your tickets now! During an unforgettable evening, you’ll dine on mouthwatering courses prepared by our executive chefs while experiencing Samsara Cabaret, a triumphant, highly visual spectacle featuring original scores of reimagined classics and a dazzling array of interactive projections that harmonize with rapturous dancing, aerialists and stunning vocal and musical talent. As Artemis, an ethereal creature formed of stardust, makes her way across the galaxy on stage, start your gourmet flight with local burrata, succulent tomatoes and Meyer lemon confit or a tuna ceviche featuring plump sliced mango and avocado with a zest of habanero chilies. The swelling rise of a duet between violinist Shane Borth and cellist Ben Muñoz delights while you select either locally-caught mahimahi served with mole verde and a paprika emulsion or a tender 48-hour Malbec-braised

short rib trimmed with crispy onions and candied walnuts. Artemis’ journey culminates in a blazing fire of discovery as she comprehends her true destiny while guests take pleasure in a decadent dessert tower replete with dulce de leche cheesecake pops, coconut-rum macarons and a bourbon pecan tart. This tantalizing combination of epicurean indulgence and sensuous entertainment is available to guests every Friday and Saturday night.

MEET SAMSARA’S STAR DANCERS Acquaint yourself with the dancers whose dynamic abilities and passion for their art captivate Faeana Theater’s spellbound audience. Principal dancer Bianca Allanic delivers a delicately nuanced performance that breathes life into Samsara’s protagonist—a sentient being born of stardust. Extensively trained in classical ballet, Allanic has performed all over the world and evinces worldly curiosity as she journeys through the cosmos.

Samsara Cabaret on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. In-house guests may dial the concierge at 4037 for more information. Tickets are available at www.faenatheater.com To stay up-to-date on all Faena news, follow us on Instagram (@Faena) and subscribe to our e-newsletter at www.faena.com/miami-beach. Megan Stockman—both a dancer and an aerialist—adds a sizzling flare to the story. As comfortable in the air as on stage, Stockman and her jaw-dropping aerial work couples with Allanic’s balletic grace to create a triumphant story of creativity, energy and self-realization.

Like Stockman, Samantha “Sammie” Mixan was a featured performer in Faena’s incredible Sensatia Cirque Cabaret. This Nebraska native has had an affinity for gymnastics since childhood, and as an adult discovered her love for elemental performance—namely, fire-dancing. Mixan’s presence adds heat to Samsara and helps Allanic’s protagonist complete the journey from darkness into light.

GIVE THE GIFT OF FAENA

AUTUMN REFRESH

No matter who you’re buying for, self-care is truly the gift that keeps on giving. It’s easy to provide your loved ones the rest, relaxation and rejuvenation they deserve with a gift certificate to Faena Miami Beach.

BY DR. ROBERTA DEL CAMPO TIERRA SANTA HEALING HOUSE WELLNESS COLLABORATOR It’s getting close to holiday season, and that means it’s time to get your skin in tip-top shape. Here are some simple skincare tips to get your skin looking and feeling great. • Exfoliate both face and body, paying special attention to rough areas such as your feet, elbows, and knees. An exfoliator with small beads is more gentle on the skin than a harsh scrub. Exfoliate 2-3 nights per week. For body, follow your exfoliation with a hydrating cream, preferably containing ceramides. My two favorites are Eucerin Intensive Repair and Cerave Moisturizing Cream. For the face, I absolutely love NIA24 Intensive Recovery for deep hydration and the Skin Strengthening Complex for a lighter feel or for those with oily or combination skin. • Use a hydrating hyaluronic acid serum to plump up your skin and a vitamin C fortified serum to add radiance to your facial skin. My personal favorite is my Dr. Roberta CE Ferrulic Serum which combines both. • Use an eye cream with hyaluronic acid and peptides. This will help to smooth fine lines and add a plumping effect. Say hello to smooth, rested appearing eyes. • Lip care is a must! Use your favorite lip balm (I use Aquaphor nightly to keep my lips hydrated), and remember to moisturize your neck and decollete. •Don’t forget your hair. Shiny, healthy hair is a show stopper. Consider using a hydrating hair mask a couple days before big events, followed by a light hair oil serum to keep your locks hydrated, strong and shiny. I am obsessed with Miracle Fruit Seed Hair Oil. It is a non-greasy, natural hair oil that doesn’t weigh hair down and makes your hair softer, smoother, shinier, silkier, stronger and more manageable. • Smile, smile, smile! We have all heard the saying “Happy girls (and boys) are the prettiest.” I couldn’t agree more.

A Tale of Two Tierras Santas The stark beauty and tranquil harmony of Uruguay’s rugged Atlantic coastline formed the bedrock of Alan Faena’s dreams for the Tierra Santa Healing House in Miami Beach. In his early 20s, Argentina native Alan Faena discovered a plot of vacant beachfront scrubland near the summer stomping grounds of his childhood—Punta del Este, Uruguay. The remote stretch of land offered him refuge to feed his soul, a place of quiet seclusion where the gentle echo of the ocean promised healing, nurturing and spiritual growth. Over the course of decades, he sculpted beauty from the stretch of earth he called Tierra Santa— Holy Land—until it brimmed with thousands of hand-cultivated, wild red roses whose scent drifted on the salty breeze. Faena lived in elemental harmony on the land, tapping into the universal well of creativity and abundance feeding the universe until he his next steps came to him. He would bring to the world the many lessons he’d found in

his blooming paradise. The Tierra Santa Healing House manifests Faena’s dream of a place for meditative, holistic therapies for the mind, body and spirit. Drawing from ancient South American shamanic wisdom and South Asian healing traditions, guests are guided to awaken consciousness and restore wellbeing through carefully crafted healing rituals. Nearby, the Atlantic Ocean extends gentle waves, warm breezes and divine inspiration, just as it does at Faena’s idyllic estate that inspired it all. Perhaps because of this, the German mystic and philosopher, Meister Eckhart, announced that: “If the only prayer one gives in one’s whole life is thanks, that will be enough.” There seems to be something in gratitude that propels us toward personal growth, not to say spiritual development, and which then harmonizes our interactions with our surroundings. THE MATERIALIZATION OF GRATITUDE Being thankful is, in essence, a simple act. The impact is such, though, that it ends up permeating all the other facets of our lives. To get a measure of this, it’s enough to see what it provokes in our brains. Gratitude positively activates the hypothalamus region which regulates functions like temperature and appetite. In another neuro-scientific analysis of the cerebral effects of gratitude, changes were recorded in the middle of the prefrontal cortex, which suggests a rela-

tionship between gratitude and learning skills. In regard to the physical body, acts of thankfulness have proven to have a positive effect on physical pain. This might be related to the release of dopamine in the brain, and thus it facilitates good sleep and relaxed states. It can even energize our physical body. In the mind, a relationship has been detected between gratitude and a reduction in harmful sensations, like stress and anxiety, as well as in toxic emotions, like frustration and anger. Finally, on the collective level, an appreciation for social interaction fosters empathy, strengthens feelings like trust and identification, and supports cooperation. In short, just as its effects the body, mind, and spirit, gratitude acts as an agent significantly favoring social development. A WAY OF SEEING LIFE It’s no coincidence that in nearly all religions

and mystical traditions, gratitude has been understood as an essential fuel for human growth. The simplicity implicit in the act seems proportional to the transcendence of its effects. In daily life, we’re habitually thankful for resolving a most ancient dilemma, decisively reconfiguring our own sense of reality, and even what’s understood as having meaning in life. And although unfortunately the decision is seldom made consciously, the truth is that each of us can choose which lens we apply to our own landscape. In a sense, then, a powerful phrase from French writer, Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr, is worth putting on the table: “There are people who complain that roses have thorns; I, on the other hand, appreciate that thorns have roses.”

More than a mere feeling, gratitude is an instrument that we use to negotiate with reality. Regardless of its ethical or moral qualities, the act has a fundamental value to what may be our most important mission as human beings: giving meaning to our existence.
