[Roof Elements] YOGOGI NATIONAL GYMNASIUM, TOKYO
The preliminary research will be focussed on the articulation of a ceiling element, a ‘soffitto’. Ceilings are the most primitive of architectural intervantions, yet often employed as a primary vehicle for the articulation of space and function. A ceiling, and by association of a roof, from the primitive shelter to the contemporary envelop, has collected together an extended range of task; structure, enclosure/light, ventilation, shelter, shading, energy generation, acoustics, to mention some. The studio analyse and explore the architectural element to find a new expressive ways of making space. Through a rigorous examination of the technological aspects, we will make propositions for articulating the designs by the study of components and connections, expressing the architectonic, within a context of exploiting precedent.

The theme of the ceilingis further focused by constraining the material and geometry to a thin sheet material, resulting in a structure that will evolve through a study of cutting, bending, laminating and connecting hin sheet material to achieved long spanning geometrically intricate structures. The context for the structure will be discussed and surveyed in order to create a boundary condition. The developed structures will be technically analysed, and envisaged within the context of detail fabrication drawings.

[Build Upon Vibration] Cambridge
The new dynamics of production posit an intriguing possibility for a return to making in the city; A considered retro-innovation with commercial production cohabiting with public, private and civic interests within a context of cleaner production allowing a closer compact between production and the city than the previously possible. The year’s agenda pursues a central interest in exploring an architecture which embeds production and research into urban conditions and reimagines the city as a consortium of alternative productive futures. The speculation is taken this year to Cambridge to the makerspace of Clive Sinclair and his technical and cultural project the ‘Science of Cambridge’. In 1980 Sinclair produced the first mass market home computer and provide a counterpoint to an era of rampant production by his attention to design and quality standards. He went on to develop vehicles, watches, bikes, and satellite technology. Sinclair sold on the trademark (Sinclair Radionics) in mid 1980’s, a victim, like many others, in the hostile marketplace of reduced margins and a reluctance to engage with overseas cheap labour. Our studio takes up the story 30 years on, with the conceit of re-animating Sinclair and reconfiguring Cambridge as an urban framework for analysing how economy and production engage with place.

The hybridising transport infrastructure + manufacturing project seeks to transforming the city around Cambridge Railway Station into an Interchange center between people and industry. Cambridge has been a genuine worldclass location for innovation and business, giving opportunity to create one high technology innovation and transport interchange. An interchange for High Technology Manufacturing with an intelligent workforce and the highest number of patents filed per head of population, Cambridge is arguably the UK’s most innovative city and a perfect location for high – tech innovation. While excellent regional, national and international transport links makes it the place to be. The manufactured product is a carbon fiber material that can later be use to print a carbon fiber component. The proposal will include an assembling area for the component testing (under ground level). The Project is interested in discovering ways to support manufacture and transportation of Super-Sized Construction Component, that is currently limited by transport infrastructure. The products of the manufacture can be transported out of Cambridge by using the railway track to the nearest large seaport (Felixstowe port, Port of London, Port of Southampton, Port of Liverpool, Port of Immingham and Port of Leith). The interchange is also being use as a transport center (car, busses, taxi, train, bicycle and pedestrian). The interchange also acts as a connector between the west site and the east site of Cambridge to allow faster route. The original train station is being remodel and intergrade with other types of transportation such as bus and taxi services. The Aim of The Design Thesis is How the Complexity of the Infrastructure spaces merge with the manufacturing spaces that affect the circulation of the people in and out of cambridge. The proposal also acts as a bridge to connect between the east site and the west site of cambridge [existing been cut by the rail tracks].

Surface Treatment
The Fujian tulou “FUJIAN EARTHEN BUILDINGS” are Chinese rural dwellings unique to the Hakka in the mountainous areas in south-eastern Fujian, China. They were mostly built between the 12TH AND THE 20TH CENTURIES. A tulou is usually a large, enclosed and fortified earth building, most commonly rectangular or circular in configuration, with very thick load-bearing rammed earth walls between three and five stories high and housing up to 800 people. Smaller interior buildings are often enclosed by these huge peripheral walls which can contain halls, storehouses, wells and living areas, the whole structure resembling a small fortified city. The fortified outer structures are formed by compacting earth, mixed with stone, bamboo, wood and other readily available materials, to form walls up to 6 feet (1.8 m) thick. Branches, strips of wood and bamboo chips are often laid in the wall as additional reinforcement. The result is a well-lit, well-ventilated, windproof and earthquake-proof building that is warm in winter and cool in summer. Tulous usually have only one main gate, guarded by 4–5-inchthick (100–130 mm) wooden doors reinforced with an outer shell of iron plate.
