THE FAIRFIELD
AWARDS DINNER Celebrating a Tradition of Opportunity
THURSDAY, MARCH 31, 2016 | GRAND HYATT NEW YORK
OUR DIVERSITY VISION STATEMENT As a Jesuit and Catholic institution, Fairfield University’s commitment to the God-given dignity of the human person requires that we create an environment that promotes justice and fosters a deep understanding of human and cultural diversity. Fairfield is committed to encouraging dialogue among those with differing points of view in order to realize an integral understanding of what it means to be human. The University recognizes that transcending the nation’s political and social divisions is a matter of valuing diversity and learning respect for individuals, in their similarities and their differences. Fairfield will continue to integrate diversity in all facets of University life — academic, administrative, social, and spiritual — as together, the community seeks to realize a vision of common good that is rooted in genuine human solidarity. Fairfield University defines diversity in the broadest sense, reflecting its commitment to creating a more inclusive community that is reflective of the richly diverse global community of which we are part. Diversity encompasses not only racial, ethnic, and religious diversity, but also diversity of socioeconomic contexts, cultural perspectives, national origins, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, abilities, and educational backgrounds.

DINNER Continue the celebration at our annual after party.
GREETINGS FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends: Tonight’s 28th Annual Fairfield Awards Dinner is a particularly special one, as we gather to celebrate the contributions of a select band of men and women who help to make Fairfield University the vibrant community it has become. As in every year, we celebrate the accomplishments of faculty, staff, and alumni while supporting educational opportunities for Fairfield students. This year, we also recognize the parents of our students whose contributions are so vital to the life of our University. This year’s Awards Dinner is also significant as we are in the midst of our Fairfield Rising Campaign, raising support for scholarships, endowed chairs, new facilities and other priorities so that we can continue to remain as a world-class institution in the Jesuit tradition. The generous support we have received to date is yet another illustration of the strong bonds that unite us as a learning community. Tonight, our focus turns to student scholarships. Fairfield University was founded with a specific mission — to provide educational opportunities to those who might otherwise not get the chance or be given the tools to realize their full potential. This is true to the spirit of St. Ignatius himself, who came to understand — now almost 500 years ago — that the only way to transform the world for the better was to nurture and develop the innate capacities in every human person, providing them with the skills and confidence they need to make the world a better place. That is what tonight’s Awards Dinner is all about — embracing that vision of St. Ignatius with the understanding that the mission is still as important today as it has ever been. This evening’s award recipients have enhanced our University through their gifts and commitment, and they have been exemplary in their service to our shared mission. Thank you for joining me in honoring them and for your commitment to our common purpose! Sincerely,
Jeffrey P. von Arx, S.J.

SCHOLARSHIPS THAT OPEN DOORS TO THE WORLD Many of Fairfield’s alumni are the first in their families to attend college and come from diverse social and economic backgrounds. Many of our alumni were only able to attend our University because generosity towards Fairfield made it financially possible. Doors were opened, careers, families and life-long friendships launched, in the spirit of the magis — doing more for others. At the same time, we seek to attract top students through merit awards and other scholarships that will support them in their academic research and studies. These awards build Fairfield’s reputation as a destination University for students of unique promise and ability. Major economic shifts across the country have significantly impacted the affordability of a college education. To address this reality, increasing scholarship is a key University priority. Jesuit education has always been inspired by this vision — to form men and women to become leaders. Providing a world-class education to men and women regardless of their circumstances is a proud Fairfield tradition. It is in our DNA.

DISTINGUISHED FACULTY/ADMINISTRATOR AWARD
CAROLE ANN MAXWELL, P’02 Director of Choral Music
W
hen reflecting on all her years at Fairfield University, Carole Ann feels most gratified by the growth and collegiality of what has been built since her arrival in the fall of 1980.
“I find it exhilarating working with students and my goal is to inspire them to enjoy the choral arts and the wonderful music we create together.” Carole Ann received her bachelor’s in music education from Immaculata College in Malvern, Pa., a master’s degree in choral conducting at Temple University, and attended the University of Illinois for a doctorate in choral conducting. Prior to coming to Fairfield, Carole Ann was teaching and conducting at Texas Woman’s University in Denton, Texas where she had the distinct honor of making a USO tour in Southeast Asia with the chorus during the Vietnam conflict.
“It is especially gratifying to know I have had a small part in shaping their growth.” When Carole Ann arrived at Fairfield, she served as the director of the Women’s Chorale. She then helped to build the mixed voice Chamber Singers and finally facilitated the integration of the men’s and women’s choruses to form the Fairfield University Glee Club as you know it today. The Glee Club has become not only the largest club on campus, but also a fine ambassador for what is best about Fairfield University. Carole Ann has also been the director of Liturgical Music with Campus Ministry, working collaboratively with Fr. Doody to create a more student friendly music ministry and the formation of The Lord’s Chords and Praise Project. She was inducted into the prestigious Jesuit Honor Society, Alpha Sigma Nu in 2012. Additionally, she is the founder, artistic director, and conductor of The Mendelssohn Choir of Connecticut, created in 1984 by Fairfield alumni who wanted to continue the choral arts after graduation. Today, what was initially a small group of 10 – 15 singers has become an approximately 90-voice community choir, including many Fairfield Glee Club alumni. She also serves as the chorus master for Connecticut Grand Opera and Orchestra. Carole Ann has conducted Fairfield’s Glee Club across the globe, from Disney World in Orlando to Prague in the Czech Republic. During Spring Break this year, she took 70 members of the Glee Club to Rome, where the students sang at, among many locations, St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican. “Over the years it has been my good fortune to see students grow in their years singing with me, expanding their knowledge of music, and the art of working together,” Carole Ann said. “It is especially gratifying to know I have had a small part in shaping their growth.”
PARENT LEADERSHIP AWARD
WILLIAM AND MARGARET ATWELL, P’08
B
ill and Peggy Atwell are the proud parents of Christopher Atwell ’08, a graduate of The Dolan School of Business and a former lacrosse player, whose education they believe was transformative.
Bill and Peggy accompanied Chris to campus when he visited as a high school student at the invitation of Head Lacrosse Coach Ted Spencer. They were very impressed with Fairfield’s commitment to studying the “core” curriculum while pursuing a business degree, its small class size and engaged faculty. “As we spoke with current parents and students, we were even more convinced that Fairfield was the right choice for Chris. He made an excellent decision to enroll at Fairfield, made even better by meeting his future wife, Kelly ’09!”
“Given our careers in business,” Bill continued, “we are able to share our experiences and resources to help Fairfield achieve its mission.” The Atwells say that they’re proud to be Fairfield parents because of the quality of its graduates who demonstrate the value of a Jesuit education and its emphasis on educating the “whole” person — mind, body and spirit. “Values and ethics matter in whatever field you pursue,” Bill said. “Fairfield graduates live the values they learn at Fairfield.” Since their son’s time on campus, they have both been actively involved in the vision for Fairfield’s future. Bill, managing director at Atwell Partners LLC, is a member of the Fairfield University Board of Trustees, serving as chairman from 2012-2015. Both Bill and Peggy were able to pursue their MBA’s at Long Island University through the generosity of others. Peggy was awarded a scholarship from the Ford Foundation and Bill was granted a graduate assistantship. They believe in “paying back” which is the reason the Atwells established two scholarship funds at Fairfield. “Given our careers in business,” Bill continued, “we are able to share our experiences and resources to help Fairfield achieve its mission.”
HONORARY ALUMNUS AWARD
GEORGE E. DIFFLEY, P’97, ’96
W
hen George Diffley first arrived on campus, he was just three years older than Fairfield University. He remembers when Fairfield had its first Fulbright recipient, was on Bellarmine Hall’s great lawn for Leonard Bernstein’s commencement address and fondly recalls when Fairfield was 16th seeded and almost beat the 1st seeded UNC in ’97. When he learned that he was to receive this award, George said, “I have to tell you that although I am being named an Honorary Alumnus of Fairfield now, I have felt like an alumnus for quite some time and have so many good and valued friends among the alumni. We have enjoyed some good times together and Fairfield is always the ‘glue’.” Bronx, N.Y., born and raised, George studied political science and theology at Fordham University where he earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Later, he taught at the College of New Rochelle but lucky for Fairfield, he decided to look for another career. He served in key development roles at St. Joseph’s College in Brooklyn and Georgetown University before he was hired at Fairfield by Rev. Tom Fitzgerald, S.J., in 1975. He served the Advancement division as vice president for 30 years until his retirement in 2006.
“Fairfield will go as far as you want to take it. I want that to be very far indeed. I hope they do, too!” George led the University through its first two capital campaigns among many endeavors that allowed Fairfield remarkable success in fundraising. He has worked under three University Presidents, and currently serves as special assistant to University President Jeffrey P. von Arx, S.J. He is a recipient of the Rev. Barry M. McGannon, S.J. Award from the Jesuit Advancement Administrators and there’s even a special room in Bellarmine Hall named after him. Although he was and is very honored by the Diffley Board Room, he modestly wants to “hide under the table” when people mention it by name. Both of George’s daughters Kara ’97 and Megan ’96 attended Fairfield and returned for advanced degrees. When asked what three words come to mind when he thinks of Fairfield alumni, he said “bonded, proud and motivated.” As a proud honorary Stag, George reiterates to his fellow alumni what he has been saying for years: “Fairfield will go as far as you want to take it. I want that to be very far indeed. I hope they do, too!”
ALUMNI SERVICE AWARD
ANDREW M. DAVIS ’89, MATTHEW MCLAUGHLIN ’89 AND JOSEPH SOLIMINE, JR. ’89
A
ndrew Davis ’89, Matthew McLaughlin ’89 and Joseph Solimine, Jr. ’89, are three friends who created the Michael R. Andrews ’89 Scholarship to commemorate their friend and fellow alumnus whose life was tragically taken during the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center. From its inception in 2005, the scholarship fund has grown steadily from the proceeds of their annual golf outing and other memorial events that bear Mike’s name. Through the dedication and leadership of Andy, Matt and Joe and most importantly from the overwhelming generosity of alumni, colleagues and friends, the fund stands at nearly $600,000 today (and counting!). Their aim remains simple: to provide financial assistance for deserving Fairfield University students so they can enjoy everything the school has to offer.
“What makes Andy, Matt and I most proud is seeing our fellow alumni support The Mike Andrews Scholarship Fund. We made a promise that we are not going to stop until this scholarship is the largest scholarship fund at the University … and it will be. Write it down!” Andy, Matt and Joe all remember their time at Fairfield fondly from their classes with Professor Emeritus Carmen Donnarumma, to playing varsity baseball, to their senior year at the beach. Most of all they are thankful for the lifelong friends they met at Fairfield and, nearly 30 years later, are proud to be among the many Stags who take time to help others. Joe said, “What makes Andy, Matt and I most proud is seeing our fellow alumni support The Mike Andrews Scholarship Fund. We made a promise that we are not going to stop until this scholarship is the largest scholarship fund at the University … and it will be. Write it down!” All three have had success in the business world as well. Andy is a commercial finance manager at PA Consulting; Matt is a vice president/general sales manager at Fox Stations Sales; and Joe is the chief executive officer at Meridian Risk Management. The trio has also participated in a number of University events including the DSB Executive Roundtables and the Annual Freshman Send-offs. Matt and Joe are currently volunteers for the Friends of Fairfield Baseball initiative to build a new baseball stadium on campus. (l-r: Joseph Solimine, Jr. ’89, Matthew McLaughlin ’89 and Andrew M. Davis ’89)
ALUMNI PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
PATRICIA E. GLASSFORD ’85 Vice President & Chief Financial Officer, GE Energy Connections
P
atricia E. Glassford ’85 is not only one of Fairfield’s most accomplished alumnae, but also one of the most engaged and supportive — giving her time, talent and treasure to ensure that Fairfield achieves its dreams. Since graduating with a degree in finance and a minor in information systems, Patti married the love of her life, fellow Stag John Glassford ’85, has lived on both coasts and has traveled the globe building her distinguished thirty-year career at General Electric.
“Fairfield University gave me a strong well-rounded Jesuit education that taught me to look at things from many different perspectives and to balance ethics and morals with success and drive.” Patti credits Fairfield’s broad core curriculum, the teamwork in her finance classes and the influence of professors like Tom Conine, PhD, as the foundation of her career success. She also acknowledges that Dr. Conine and the Career Planning Center helped guide her to GE. “Fairfield University gave me a strong, well-rounded, Jesuit education that taught me to look at things from many different perspectives and to balance ethics and morals with success and drive. It has continued to provide a framework for me to help others, has allowed me to remain spiritual and to be thankful for all that I have.” Upon graduation, she entered GE’s management training program, serving as an analyst before joining the Corporate Audit staff, which is the premiere training ground in the company. She worked at GE Plastics for nearly six years before moving for a position as CFO of NBC West Coast, where she was responsible for network financials including Prime Time, Daytime, Late Night and NBC Studios. She then returned to NBC at 30 Rockefeller Center, N.Y. as the CFO of the 13 network owned and operated stations and the Telemundo stations. After a whirlwind tour through other operating companies, she landed at GE Energy Connections in Conn., where she has served as vice president and chief financial officer for the past two years. Patti is committed to ensuring that future generations of Fairfield students have access to financial support, especially since scholarships helped her earn her Fairfield education. She and John both serve as alumni leaders and mentors — John as a member of the Dolan Advisory Board and Patti as an active member of the University’s Board of Trustees. Patti holds Fairfield’s mission close to her heart and is truly a woman for others in both her personal and professional life.

“Many of the people who look forward to a long life put off doing good works, since they think they will have plenty of time before they die. As for me, I prefer to be among those who consider that they have no time to lose if they wish to give God all the glory that they can before they die.” – St Margaret of Hungary
We congratulate Patti Glassford for her great honor, but more importantly for embodying the quote above. The O’Rourkes admire Patti and John for the works they have done for Fairfield University and for living the gospel as good disciples.
