FROM YOUR TEACHERS WORDS OF PRAISE DEAR CLASS OF 2021 PRAISE So many memories of you are seared in my memory -- your humor, your grace, your intellect, your unending chattiness! But perhaps most of all, your resilience and positive attitude during a really different and difficult year. You adapted to an unimaginable situation in the spring of 2020, and through your good will and trust in staff, you made last spring survivable. You helped me stay strong and creative during those last months of seventh grade. Eighth grade started a lot the same, but you kept showing up, growing, questioning, smiling (well, mostly!). It felt like seeing long lost friends when we moved to hybrid and then full in-person learning in spring 2021 -- those of you I taught and those of you I knew just from passing, it put a smile on my masked face to see you again. This year will no doubt continue to affect us in ways we are probably still not aware of. What I will always hold as a happy memory from this global pandemic is you. You have big hearts -- you care about making the world more colorful, more equitable, and more just for everyone. Thank you for showing us what it means to care, especially in the middle of a hard year like this one! A quick message of thanks! Your energy, enthusiasm, and joy of learning has helped our community maintain a positive attitude through this year's trials and tribulations. Through our many transitions, you have shown flexibility while remaining committed to your academic and personal growth. You have been strong and resilient together - bringing each other up even from a distance. Congratulations! I am so incredibly proud of each of you and your perseverance to get to this point! You are all going separate ways to high schools near and far, but always know you can do anything you set your mind to! Change is hard but is necessary for growth and you all have grown and matured into amazing young people! I will miss you all! Your Gilkey experience has been different from previous years, yet you have risen above all that you have been dealt. You have maintained a sense of humor, worked hard, and have grown in your understanding of friendship and companionship. You have learned how flexible you are and how you can adapt to ever-changing situations. Our world is constantly changing around us, but your ability to demonstrate kindness and respect will always shine through. You lived through circumstances that were totally unknown and terrifying at times, but you made it. You will remember this year forever. Félicitations! It was a pleasure to be one of your fifth grade French teachers. If I need to describe your group, I would do it with the following words: Dynamic – smiling – interdependent – humorous – hard-working – ambitious - talented – unique – unforgettable – respectful – kind – open- curious - caring. On different occasions, you astounded me by your different talents. I will always remember our trip all together to Paris at “l’école de l'Hôpital Saint-Louis”. You have shown me how much you could be a united group having the sense of work. Just like we say it so well in my country “Unity makes the force”. I wish you all excellent years in high school and especially stay curious and continue to learn. Bravo! You have been part of my world and life for the last 3 years. With some I have interacted a lot and some I have barely met, but all of you I think of with a smile and the joy and expectation of seeing you succeed by being peaceful and happy.
I appreciate your effort, resilience and hard work during this out of the ordinary year. I am really impressed. Have a great summer and best of luck in High School.
"Fall forward. Every failed experiment is one step closer to success. You've got to take risks." — Denzel Washington Let Science Guide Us! Be you, unapologetically!...“When you are content to be simply yourself and don't compare or compete, everyone will respect you.” ― Lao Tzu, Tao Te Ching Ausbildung heißt, das zu lernen, von dem Du nicht einmal wusstest, dass Du es nicht wusstest. – Ralph Waldo Emerson Two things you have complete control over in your life: Your attitude and your effort “Welcome to the real world. It sucks. You're gonna love it!" Monica Geller, FRIENDS Be bold, be courageous, be your best. "Permanence, perseverance and persistence in spite of all obstacles, discouragements, and impossibilities: It is this, that in all things distinguishes the strong soul from the weak. - Thomas Carlyle" And now the deep comment: Of the two levels of existence, take the obvious one, this one, live with passion and love, and take risks and excitement, and be aware and smart. The other one, the deeper one, you will catch glimpses of it from time to time, and it will remind you that you really don't need to take everything seriously. That serenity and going within and resting your mind is the essential skill.
ENCOURAGEMENT You have taken on all the challenges of this past year and continued to grow and learn, despite obstacles. You are resilient, powerful, and ready to take on anything the future has in store for you. Keep growing, keep learning, and keep on trying! I am inspired by the care that you show each other, and the value you place on healthy friendships. You are a bunch of funny, sometimes shoeless, inquirers, who will surprise us all by changing the world. Sometimes all it takes is a little push to spark big changes. It was an honor to be your "little" push.
Congratulations class of 2021!! Great things await you...come back and tell us about them!
OUR GILKEY EXPERIENCES
EXCERPTS FROM STUDENT REFLECTIONS
ACADEMIC + PERSONAL TAKEAWAYS REFLECTIONS FROM THE CLASS OF 2021 * = repeated takeaway An academic takeaway from Gilkey has been learning to think in a global context. I have also developed my language skills in French, English, and Spanish. I have been able to acquire a deeper understanding of the languages and speaking with them.
CIMEDACA
I think I'll always remember how to write essays and speeches well thanks to Mme Cansse and Mme Rosier, and I'll always remember Spanish condicional conjugation thanks to Senor's old macdonald song that goes with it.*** One academic takeaway from FAIS that I will forever carry with me is my language skills in Mandarin and French. These languages are very important to me, and I am glad to be able to take that knowledge with me.*
I was able to develop the skill of “Lecture Intelligence” or focus reading, to pay attention to different texts and spot the important information in them. It works in many subjects.**
An academic takeaway from FAIS would be my test taking skills. Many teachers have worked with me on how to be efficient and manage my time in test taking. They have also worked on positivity and believing in yourself when taking a test.****** I believe that I will be able to better gauge school's abilities to teach and provide help for people.* An academic takeaway from FAIS that I'll carry with me into high school and beyond is probably how I've grown academically during my time in middle school. I have grown more confident in my answers and I know now that there is no shame for not knowing something. Most likely math because the teacher our teacher is also trying to prepare us for high school math and what is going to happen so we're practicing some subjects that we will see in the future.*
I have learned how to make a diverse group of amazing friends.************************ I have learned that life can be difficult but it is important to persevere and adapt instead of giving up.******
LANOSREP
I have learned to create a sense of community between my classmates and teachers at school, making it feel like something more comfortable in that environment.*** A personal takeaway I have from my time at FAIS would be that stressing over the little moments will make you miss the big moments.*** Helping others will make you a better person****** A personal take away that can basically be used inside, outside of school and also throughout life is being able to be outgoing, to be able to share your thoughts. to be able to say hi to someone you barely know without being nervous.** Patience is key. Procrastination is a lock.**** That you can't change yourself for others to like you. There are always people who like you the way you are. Surround yourself with people that will support you and challenge you.*
Thank you to the Events Design students who designed and created material for graduation, including this booklet, the reflection video, the memory slideshow, the high school slideshow, the word clouds in the memory book, and the "wisdom locks.": Maia, Simone, Spencer, Gabby, Julien, Kate, Jalen, Manan, Alice, Joshua, Mira, Marisa, Jasper, Leo, Adrianna, Katie, and Jordan

If you're afraid to fail, then you're probably going to fail. - Kobe Bryant "Can I go home now?" Good friends make a good life. “Just remember, you can’t climb the ladder of success with hands in your packets.” – Arnold Schwarzenegger Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory. - Dr.Seuss "Clowns are like Rudolph the Red-Nose Reindeer, but all year round." - Nisma Noora Qureshi Live as if you were to die tomorrow.... - Mahatma Gandhi "We are powerful because we survived." - Audre Lorde Trust yourself. As the first group of Gilkey graduates to spend three calendar years in the new building, we wish to create a class gift that starts a tradition for future generations of Gilkey students. This year, the class of 2021 collaborated to create a gift that is symbolic of the legacy we want to leave: Wisdom Locks. We signed colorful locks that are decorated with our 8th grade quote on them. The quote, motto, or mantra on the lock is meant to share our current wisdom with incoming students. The locks are now hanging on a fence at the entrance to the middle school so that they will have a lasting campus presence. This is our way of emulating the "love locks" on the Pont des Arts bridge over the River Seine in Paris. As we leave our tokens of wisdom, we hope our efforts will begin an ongoing tradition of adding"wisdom locks" to the fence. These locks symbolize that we will always have ties to this place that has helped raise us. We will always remember our experiences from this school and to the connections we have made. The collection of locks symbolizes that we are the class of 2021 and that we are bonded in a way that cannot be untangled. We have survived through the pandemic and have still remained connected with our friends and community. Our time at FAIS is a part of us. Now it is time to move on. We will never forget this place. With leaving this legacy of locks, we are symbolically securing these memories forever. We are the Class of 2021 and we will always be connected to this place and these people. As we open a new chapter of our lives, we hope you continue to unlock memories. May your start at Gilkey be the key to your future!
“Be mindful of your thoughts, Anakin – they betray you.” -Obi-Wan Kenobi “You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great”-Zig Ziglar "The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams." - Eleanor Roosevelt "Writings not that easy" Grammarly (writing's has to be written as writings ) "It always seems impossible until it is done." - Nelson Mandela "The way I see it, if you want the rainbow, you have to put up with the rain." - Dolly Parton. “I don't know It's the job that's never started as takes longest to finish."― J.R.R. Tolkien "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it." -Ferris Bueller Humanity is good. Some people are terrible and broken, but humanity is good. I believe that. - Hank Green "It ain't about how hard you can hit.
