FAITH CHURCH FAMILY & FRIENDS, Though Jesus walked the earth 2,000 years ago, He still knows about the problems you face today. Not only does Jesus know what plagues us as a culture, He gets us. I know that can be hard to grasp because we serve a perfect God, but Jesus lived on this earth as a man and in that time he experienced strong mankind emotions. Jesus was tempted, too. He was disrespected, too. He was doubted, too. He mourned, too. He suffered, too.
A LETTER FROM
At the February 2024 Super Bowl, the national ad campaign and website, “He Gets Us,” will air commercials for millions to see, reinforcing the idea that Jesus knows you and can relate. The following six weekends (February 17/18-March 23/24), churches from around the Chicagoland area, Faith Church included, will engage in teaching and discussion about some of those things we may not realize Jesus can relate to. We will explore how Jesus knows about our insecurity, exhaustion, anxiety, guilt, loneliness and grief. We’re not alone in this world. Our Savior gets us and wants to minister to us! Even with this coordinated church effort and multi-million dollar ad campaign, the best way to reach hurting people around you is through personal invitation. In my pastoral position, I’ve heard a number of reasons why people find it hard to walk through church doors: “I’m not good enough,” “I need to get my life together before I can come before God,” “There are things heavier than my drama that God should focus on,” and “The walls will fall down if I go to church.” How might things be different for someone close to you if they realized just how much Jesus relates. He Gets Us. Send a text, give a call - who can you invite to participate in this series with us? For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in every way as we are, yet without sin. Therefore, let us approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in time of need. Hebrews 4:15-16 He Gets Us, Pastor Bob 4

He Gets Us is a movement to reintroduce people to the Jesus of the Bible and His confounding love and forgiveness. We believe His words, example, and life have relevance in our lives today and offer hope for a better future.

No joking in her tone. No “heck no” intonation in her voice. It’s like God gave us married thoughts.
I’m standing at the front of a group of men that have gathered, about 15 in total. They are sitting in plastic outdoor chairs that have been placed in a semi-circle on dusty, dry earth with chickens and dogs walking amongst our circle as we converge. It’s a sweltering September afternoon; the temperature was supposed to reach 112 degrees today. My best guess - the ages of these men range from early 20s to mid-70s. And each one has their attention focused on me as Pastor Djard tells me it’s my turn.
When we get in the car, I bring the topic up for discussion, and she interrupts with, “Chris, don’t even think about it, just do it.” I knew she meant don’t overanalyze it, so I didn’t. I jumped in with both feet!
I take a beat to gather myself, shooting a quick prayer to God, please use this as an opportunity for someone to connect with You; let Your words speak from my lips. And then taking a calming breath, I begin. I share my story. Well, really, it’s His story.
I was born into a Baptist household. It was my lifestyle up until my freshman year in high school. Our family had a falling out with the church. My understanding is that my father had lost his job and reached out to our church for financial support so my siblings and I could continue to attend private school, and he was turned away.
Sunday, February 12, 2023 (7 months earlier)
My wife, Allison, and I find our seats at Faith Cedar Lake. We arrived a few minutes early and I’m reviewing the pre-service slides that appear on the screens in the worship center. There is a “Brazil Mission Trip” information slide, which catches my attention. I’ve never sought out a mission trip before, but I also can’t recall a time one was staring me right in the face. I instinctively think, “I think I’d really like to be part of that team.” Once announcements are underway - and the Brazil Mission Trip is being talked about - I glance my eyes over to Allison, who is already looking right at me. She whispers, “You want to do this, don’t you?”
Some backstory
And it almost seemed that with time, we turned away from God. For me personally, it wasn’t that I ever stopped believing in Him, but rather, I was living a life that served me. And it was in that style of living that I describe that period of my life as chaos. I knew I was making choices in my life that weren’t pleasing to God. I had a pretty rough marriage that ended in divorce. My ex moved our sons to a town several hours away and I saw my kids about once a month. After a while I knew in order to get my life back on track, I needed to be surrounded by other believers. It was my childhood in the church that my memories kept taking me back to. I began attending Crossroads in Schererville and later joined their Saturday morning men’s group. It was this group of men, my brothers in Christ, who
drew me in and helped me turn my life around. They were relatable. They walked alongside me. They didn’t make me feel judged or unworthy.
encouraging the young boys around me that it was ok, better yet cool, to worship God.
I rebuilt my relationship with God. I became the type of man who could have a Christian marriage. I became a brother in Christ. I learned that serving others was important to me. I became bold in my faith. And it’s where God laid on my heart that He wanted to use me, His story of my life, to encourage other men in their walk.
Something stands out to me, daily
And one of those opportunities came when Allison and I were on a journey to seek out a new church and found a home with Faith Cedar Lake. In serving at the church and joining small groups, I could relate and share my story with other men I was creating community with. Another opportunity came in the form of being selected for the Brazil Mission Trip that Faith Church was sending September 23-30, 2023.
Along the Amazon River in Brazil
There are roughly 40 people on the Medical Mission Boat in Brazil: 6 crew team members, 12 local team members from the Presbyterian Church of Manaus (including pastors and translators), and the 20 of us from Faith Church. We are told that there are essentially four serving teams. Aside from the Medical Team, we will each serve on one team in the morning and potentially a different team in the afternoon. > Medical Team: Doctors and nurses stayed on the boat during the day, serving the people of the community as they line up with their needs. > Evangelism: The village leader will arrange for us to meet in various homes within the community; visits are not unannounced. Small groups of 2-3 (a pastor and team member) will meet with household members. The pastor will share God’s Word and the testimony of the team member, if applicable. We will offer a time for questions and prayer requests. > VBS (AM-Kids; PM-Teens): It will be hosted much like a morning in Faith Kids, with a story, time of worship, crafts and other activities. > Women’s / Men’s Groups: Similar to a small group gathering at Faith Church. Time will be spent in fellowship, being intentional with the people who attend. These are ideal opportunities for us to share God stories, to give support and encouragement.
Monday, September 25
That cliche about stepping out of your comfort zone and learning something about yourself, it’s entirely true. Today we got off the Boat for the first time since boarding. In the morning I served on a VBS Team for kids; I was the only adult male amongst the group. It was during a time of worship that I had a comfort zone moment. The worship song included synchronized hand motions, like they do in Faith Kids. I was standing off to the side with my arms crossed, taking it in, getting my bearings. I serve on the security team at Faith Cedar Lake so the best way I can describe my demeanor is “assessing the room and keeping watch.” It was then that God spoke very profoundly that I wasn’t there to observe but to do. I was to be an example of a man comfortable enough to be bold in his worship. So that’s what I did - I found a resemblance of a rhythm and started mimicking the motions. I began singing aloud. My focus shifted to
I have been serving daily alongside Pastor Djard, whether we visit with villagers in their homes or hosting small groups. He has also been serving as my translator, which I’ve been so thankful for. We speak with men in the villages we visit, hear the hardships, challenges, troubles they face or things they are struggling with. And I was honestly surprised to learn that much of what I hear is the same things being shared back home. I am taken back. Drinking problems. Marriage troubles. Financial troubles. Concerns of sexual abuse. Promiscuity with teenagers - and even STDs. In reflection, as our team prepared for this trip, we each took turns sharing our testimonies - and I’m so thankful we had that practice because in many of the conversations Pastor Djard and I have had with the men we met with, I feel like there are parts of me that can relate. Because Pastor Djard knows much of what I’ve shared by now, he quickly understands when I ask to relate by sharing snippets of my own story, in hopes of encouraging them. It makes me think of when I joined the men’s group for the first time - and now God is putting me in a position to relate, offer encouragement, and speak truth, like my brothers had done for me. Pastor Djard and I want the men we speak with to know why it’s so important for God to remain in their life and the importance of having people walk alongside and encourage them, to build one another up.
And so on that day (September 28)
A pastor-friend once told me, “People might hear you more than they hear me in my position as a pastor. It’s not about what church you attend [or ministry you are a part of], it’s about having a relationship with God and sharing that with others.” And so on September 28 (i.e. the opening paragraph), I told this group of about 15 my story - how in falling away from God, my life became disarray; how finding solid Christian men to talk with and learn from doesn’t make you weak; how even if you are embarrassed or ashamed about things you’ve done, God’s grace is sufficient; how expressing yourself to God whether through lifted arms in praise or bent knees and tears, you are still a man. After sharing the words God gave me, two older gentlemen came to stand before me. They pointed at my chest and looked up toward the heavens. And then they covered their hearts with their palms, nodding in silent agreement. It was so moving - to know they saw Christ in me.
Be Bold
Thank you for allowing this opportunity to share a portion of my life with you. The Brazil Mission Trip stretched me. Challenged me. Strengthened my relationship with God. Assured me. Taught me. I stand in greater awe of God, who knows each of us by name. My closing words are simply to say, be bold for Christ. Be bold in sharing His story of your life. Never underestimate how God will use you to transform the world one relationship at a time. In him we have boldness and confident access through faith in him. - Ephesians 3:12

A PRIORITY RESET
BY: MARILYN MILLER
Are you a New Year’s resolution person? Or maybe you just see this time of year as an opportunity to re-evaluate areas of your life. I fit more in that category. It’s a time to look at where we’ve been in the past year. Am I satisfied with my progress? You’ve seen the ads for new eating plans and gym memberships. Let’s take some time to think about the spiritual side of our lives. Are we growing? Do we see progress from last year? This is a great time to begin fresh habits which will have long lasting effects (maybe even more than the gym membership).
“Holiness is not a condition into which we drift.” John Stott Wherever you are on your walk with Jesus, Faith Church offers a variety of ways to encourage you to take that next step. Maybe it’s time to finally take the plunge and join that small group God has been nudging you about. Or maybe your Bible reading and prayer time is sporadic at best. What would it look like to commit to being more consistent? The Cover to Cover Bible Reading plan is set up for you to jump in at any time. And Pastor Bob has asked us all to commit to praying for just 7 minutes a day. That sounds doable, right? We want to help you find a tool that meets your specific needs. Take a look at some tools used by Faith staff members to keep their faith walk vibrant.

When do you listen? In my commute (when my car is kid-free) or while completing household tasks like folding laundry.
Book: Celebration of Discipline by Richard Foster
Healthy Tip: Keep a notebook handy; this way when your mind starts to wonder or an idea sparks (because it inevitably happens), you can just jot it down and keep listening and you won’t have to worry about remembering your thoughts.
Synopsis: Discover a richer spiritual life infused with joy, peace and a deeper understanding of God.
Chris Rechsteinger Special Needs Director Worship: Creates a Spotify playlist of worship songs When do you listen? I go on a 30-minute walk or run several days a week and listen to a worship-inspired playlist. It’s intentional time focused on God, praising Him and seeking Him out in the busyness and messiness of life.
What motivated you to pick up a copy: I have been looking to incorporate different ways to connect with God throughout the week, in addition to the daily ‘Cover to Cover’ Bible reading and prayer. In ‘Celebration of Discipline’, there are practices available that really deepen our walk with God and allow us to hear from Him in the midst of our busy lives. The beauty of these practices is that they can be used anytime throughout the day and many don’t take a lot of extra time. These practices allow me to be mindful of God’s constant presence throughout the challenges and joys that each day brings.
COVER TO COVER BIBLE READING When do Faith Church staff members take time to read the Bible: Some staff members start their day with a cup of coffee & the day’s Scripture, while others listen to the daily chapter on their way into work and use remaining time in prayer. While a few others read the passage and daily devotion during family meals.
Karla Weemhoff Executive Director of Communications “There are so many factors that can influence your day that there’s no ‘perfect time’ to read the Bible. Each day can look different - and that’s OK. Take one day at a time. I promise that you won’t regret opening the daily text or email, or pressing play to listen. Rather, you’ll feel God meeting you right where you are at.”

hat is the definition of “old”? Nearly 40, I’ve never considered myself old. However, trying to preach the Gospel in online spaces like YouTube makes me realize that there’s a completely different language and culture amongst those younger than me. (Duh!) I’m thankful to get to work with digital natives, those who grew up or were raised online, as they keep me relevant and up-to-date on social trends (posting rhythms, acceptable hashtags, slang). As an Online Team, we have been working on creating & curating content for YouTube with the hope that it can meet any one of the 122 million daily users right where they are.
BY: ANDY SCHULTZ
When we meet as a team, one of our exercises is sharing what type of content grabbed our attention that week. From video game reviews to quirky interviewers roasting celebrities to music videos, the common thread amongst the shared content in the meeting is that it has attracted the attention of many viewers. Then, we analyze why that might be the case. What techniques are being used for viewer retention? Why is this video so engaging to draw 20 million views?! Since our focus is ministry, we’re not necessarily in the business of general entertainment, but there are elements to consider from successful YouTube content. Currently,
our typical weekly episode features informative teaching as the centerpiece. To supplement that, our team is developing a podcast-look video series that is experiential and conversational called “More Than a Sunday,” scheduled to release in Winter 2024. Be sure to subscribe to our page YouTube.com/@WeAreFaithTV to check it out! Not only are we creating content for the main YouTube page, but Faith has added YouTube accounts for each location to watch live services. By doing so, we’re able to spread the reach of the services that you already participate in each week. YouTube allows those services to air to a broader audience, increasing the footprint of Faith Church, and ultimately the Gospel, each week. After the initial launch, streaming traffic of Faith services has increased tremendously, nearly tripling for some locations. I believe that lives are changed as a result of the ministries of Faith Church. Our Online Team strives to create tools that are shareable to make that a possibility for the people of the Region and beyond. We want online tools to point people to this place of life change: your Faith Church location. Subscribe to our pages and share content that might help those in your community, family, neighborhood, etc., to be encouraged, challenged or have questions answered about the Gospel. Thank you for allowing the online presence of Faith Church to serve as a front door to a place of ministry in the name of Jesus! Let Him be praised in all we do.

FINANCIAL UPDATE
W
e are well into the new year, a good time to check in on how our resolutions (if any) are going. Is the healthy eating plan or workout schedule still intact? Or has it wavered? While I think we’d all opt for an easy solution, we know a disciplined long-haul approach is the most effective way to physical health. And financial health is no different.
From looking back to looking ahead, you can see that the need for healthy, consistent God-inspired giving is needed to sustain our financial health. This is important so Faith Church can continue to restore the world one relationship at a time for Jesus Christ.“ What does this look like exactly?

OUR 4Gs Here at Faith Church, we live out our mission & vision through the 4Gs - gather, grow, give and go. The 4Gs were modeled in the early church, and two thousand years later they are our foundational practices and the pillars of how we mature in our Christian walk. with stories related to how we are living out our 4Gs.
We regularly gather with others to worship God and know Him more.
We reinvest our time, talent and treasure back into God’s Kingdom as a response to our thankfulness for God’s grace in our lives.
As followers of Jesus, we commit to growing in our walk with God daily and deepening our relationship with Him through prayer, Bible reading, small groups and other means.
We serve our communities, friends, and brothers & sisters in Christ across the street and around the world.
