Whether you’ve been attending Faith Church for a long time or you are a first time visitor, THE PAPER is here to help! Being a part of this church family is a partnership in growth, so we encourage you to be involved in 3 ways:
1 | WORSHIP ON THE WEEKENDS Gather with others to listen to a message from God’s Word, sing, pray and lift up the name of Jesus. Attend a service at one of our campuses. Faith Kids (infants5th grade) is a safe place where kids can worship Jesus at their level. Don’t miss the opportunity to gather with others and worship each week. Invite a friend.
2 | CONNECT IN COMMUNITY Being a follower of Jesus was never meant to be done alone. Sole-ranger Christianity usually means discouragement and failure. God has provided a better way- Biblical community. Community keeps us encouraged, helps us build meaningful friendships, and most importantly, helps us grow as Christians. This can be through a Mini-Church, Bible Study or Serving Team. No matter what your age, God does not intend for you to walk through life alone. Be real. Be known.
3 | SERVE OTHERS Join a weekend Serving Team at one of our campuses, serve in your neighborhood or around the world! God has gifted each of us to do something special. Discover the joy of serving.

ANYTHING BUT ORDINARY B Y : M A RI LYN MI LLER
W
hat is more ordinary than taking a walk?
I try to walk around the perimeter of my neighborhood several times a week, and it’s a very ordinary walk. It’s about a mile and a half, and I walk by homes and a park, a basketball court and more homes. In Bible times, walking was not for exercise. It was, of course, the main way to get around. The dusty roads could be crowded with walkers – going to market, visiting relatives, walking to temple. They even had to walk to get water from a communal well. Walking was common and very ordinary. On one particular day, two people were walking on the road to Emmaus, a town about seven miles from Jerusalem. And as they walked they talked about the events of the past few days. The events they were discussing were anything but ordinary. They were the most extra-ordinary events in all of human history. They were talking about Jesus’ trial, crucifixion and His death. They were confused by all that had happened. It hadn’t been that long ago that they had left everything to follow Jesus, their Messiah. Now the One they believed to be Messiah, was dead. What now for them?
O
rdinary begins to become extra-ordinary
As they walked, another man joined them. And he asked what they were talking about? They were pretty incredulous that this stranger had no idea what had been happening, and they asked him, “Are you the only one in Jerusalem who doesn’t know about these things?” “What things?” inquired the stranger. The two went on to explain about Jesus – who He was and what He had taught them. Then they explained how the religious leaders had delivered Him to be killed, even in the worst possible way, He was crucified. An ordinary walk – but their conversation was about events that were extra-ordinary. They continued their reporting. They told of women who had gone to Jesus’ tomb early that morning and found His body was gone. They had seen angels who said Jesus was alive. At that moment, the man began to speak. “Beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He explained the Scriptures concerning Himself.” As they were approaching Emmaus, they urged Him to stay with them because it was growing dark. “When He was at table with them, He took the bread and blessed and broke it and gave it to them. And their eyes were opened, and they recognized Him.”
And then he was gone. And the two went back to Jerusalem and found the 11 disciples who were all together, and “the walkers” told them, “The Lord has risen indeed.” And they went on to tell of their time with Him.
A
2,000-year perspective
Today, some 2,000 years later, we know the whole story. We know Jesus rose on that third day to provide eternal life and the forgiveness of sins to anyone who believes. But for those of us who have been believers for a long time, for those who heard the Easter story as children, has this amazing miraculous story become “ordinary?” Have we become numb, even complacent about the power of the story of Easter? Have we let our culture overshadow our amazement of what has been done for us? Faith Church provides a setting to help us remember well. Good Friday services are solemn and sacred as we reflect on the pain of the cross and the significance of that horrible day. Then Easter services give us hope – hope for life now and life eternal with Jesus.
H
ow can I change the Easter experience this year?
First, we can be sure we are prepared spiritually and emotionally for dealing with the significance of the event. That could include re-reading the Easter story in the gospels and spending time meditating on the passages (Matthew 26-28, Mark 14-16, Luke 22-24 and John 18-21). Then, once we’ve dealt with our own hearts, how meaningful would it be to share your personal Easter story with someone else? Your story might be the catalyst for someone else giving thought to the real meaning of Easter. Planning for these services has been in the works for months. Why? Because they are important. They are important for Jesus followers and for those who have not yet decided to follow Him. “We want lost people to have an extra ordinary experience by seeing Jesus,” says Pastor Bob Bouwer. “We hope believers will experience a new realization that the risen Lord walks with us, even when we don’t see Him.” A young man in his 20s came to the Christmas Behold the Wonder presentation. “I get it now,” he said. “I see who Jesus really is.” That’s our prayer for Easter services, too. So what is your role? Ask God with whom you might take an ordinary walk, a walk which will allow them to experience first-hand the extra-ordinary love of our Savior, Jesus.
You might be wondering what is happening and what is next for the Reach Project. We have a variety of things happening both near and far.

QUESTIONS
JESUS ASKS BY: AN DY N EA R PAS S
I
have often heard it said, “When I get to heaven I know what question I am going to ask Jesus.” I think we all have unanswered questions. Let’s face it, there are many things we would like to know that we don’t have answers to. But, I don’t think the first thing we will do when we enter the presence of the Lord is to ask Him our questions. I think we will fall on our face.
Questions aren’t bad; in fact, they help us dig deeper into things. As we question and probe, we learn and grow. But maybe, just maybe, as good as my questions might be, there are other questions I should consider; like the questions that Jesus asked others. This is something that I don’t remember considering before, that is, until last summer. Last July Judy and I had the opportunity to go back to Cedar Campus, an Intervarsity camp in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, for their Pastor’s Family Camp. We joined other Pastors and their families (the Pitzenberg family for one) for a week of refreshment and fellowship. The speaker for the week was Pastor Ben Patterson. Ben not only spoke to us, but he and his wife, Loretta, pastored the pastors and their families. Each day Ben taught from scripture, from questions Jesus asked. We were blessed and challenged by his teaching. I remember a car ride with Pastor Bob a short time after we returned from Cedar Campus. I shared with him some of Ben’s teaching. Immediately Bob said, “Let’s ask Ben if we can use his teaching outline, and then let’s ask him if he would be willing to come Faith Church and kickoff the series.” Ben liked the idea and he graciously agreed to give the first message in the series here at Faith the weekend after Easter. We are in for a treat. As we consider Questions Jesus Asked, I believe we will learn a great deal about ourselves and about Jesus. I believe we will wrestle with life’s truly important questions. We will consider questions that have to do with the concerns and fears that those close to Jesus had. Jesus asks questions like these: Why are you afraid when I am with you? Why were you looking for Me? Didn’t you know I had to be about My Father’s business? Do you still not know Me? Don’t you know what the Bible says about My suffering? Do you love Me? I believe as we unpack these questions we will begin to read scriptures differently. I also think the Lord will build up our faith in Him. And I think we will see that Jesus’ questions of us are questions we need to deal with. I am grateful for Ben’s insights and excited that we can now all share in this series. You may not have heard of Pastor Ben Patterson. He was the former chaplain at Hope College, and he is currently the chaplain at Westmont College in California where he has been for 16 years. Ben Patterson is a husband and father, a pastor, a conference speaker, a Christian author, and someone who speaks the truth. I have sat under his preaching several times over the years, and every time he has been used by GOD to challenge me. You will not want to miss Ben or the messages that follow in this series. Plan to invite people to come with you and hear him the weekend of April 22/23. Let’s be challenged by Jesus’ questions as we let Him ask us these probing questions.
LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT Faith Church has a global focus on Leadership Development through two significant partnerships. Leadership Resources International (LRI) LRI works in developing leaders and pastors through a cohort mentoring program. Faith Church is currently supporting a cohort of 12 pastors in Southeast Asia. Over the course of the next four years, these leaders will meet twice a year to learn from teachers within LRI. In turn, they’ll be responsible for sharing what they’ve learned with their peers in between the formal training. LRI calls this training TNT - Training National Trainers. Through this work, the initial training from LRI leaders will be multiplied exponentially with an estimated number of at least 1,000 trained leaders being sent out in Southeast Asia through our partnership. Onesimus Nesib Seminary (ONS) Through our partnership with ONS in Aira, Ethiopia, Faith Church is coming alongside pastors in their final years of formal pastoral education. The evangelical church is growing at an exponential rate in Ethiopia. Because of the rapid growth, pastors are in high demand. Many pastors lead as many as four-to-six congregations. By sponsoring these pastors, we are a piece of that exponential growth and are directly impacting the ability for the church to continue to grow. In 2017 we would like to sponsor 25 pastors. Individuals from Faith are invited to sponsor a pastor in completing their education. Sponsorship is $40 per month for 10 months ($400 total). If interested, email missions@wearefaith.org.
COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT In 2008, Faith Church began walking alongside World Vision in a small community called Karaba, Rwanda. Since then many of you have participated in building our relationship through child sponsorship, running with Team World Vision, sponsoring caregiver kits or promise packs, and so much more. In 2011, we were able to see the fruit of our work firsthand, which we celebrated through our church-wide series called, “The Hole in Our Gospel”. This year we celebrate the completion of World Vision’s work in Karaba, Rwanda and continue on in our partnership in Simbi, Rwanda. The needs in Simbi are great, and we are excited to wrap our arms around this new community and bring our prayers and resources in order to change the world one relationship at a time. Join us in sponsoring a child in Simbi through World Vision or running for clean water in Simbi and all of Rwanda. Child profile packets will be available at all campuses the weekend of March 4 and 5 and representatives from Team World Vision will be onsite to answer questions.

FAITH SANTO DOMINGO UPDATE BY: DAVID MOJICA GRACE & PEACE! Hi FC family! We continue to pound away and pray like mad in our desire to see a mighty move of God’s Spirit restoring lives to wholeness and multiplying this ministry. We sense something bursting at the seams as we continue to engage with both parents and children in our public school ministry. We are happy to report that our Christmas celebration at the public school we are active in was a resounding success. The place was packed with over 500 kids, teachers and parents. Our arts and music ministry in the schools is bearing good fruit, and we are close to partnering with three other schools as part of our church planting strategy. Our vision for 2020 is to plant five churches in the Greater Santo Domingo area and for these plants to be birthed out from these public schools. God has granted us favor and we will have an outreach service on Sunday, February 12 at one of these schools. We connected with about 150 parents last week and will connect with parents of 5th-8th graders this week. We are distributing flyers and personally inviting parents to come out on the 12th. The 50+ voice choir and the dance team that we are forming will perform at this event. It’s exciting to see new disciples inviting and involved in the planning stages of the Feb. 12th event. They will volunteer in all areas of ministry and will help with follow-up of those who the Holy Spirit will convict and bring to the fold on the 12th.
On another note, those we baptized in early December are close to finishing their small group leadership training and have been active in respective small groups. In fact, many of them are taking the lead in sharing the Word with our coaching. We are overjoyed in seeing them speak with boldness about Christ to others. We are seeing new people come to Christ at these small group gatherings but also come out for Sunday worship. These small group trainees should be ready to lead their own group in the next two weeks. As I mentioned earlier, we are currently engaged in a particular public school and we are discerning whether this would be the place God is calling our campus to relocate to and hold Sunday worship at. We already have the “green light” to do so. If this should be the location God is placing in our hearts to relocate to, we would need to do some minor repairs and sprucing up. We are also looking into another spot not too far from where the school is located to relocate our campus to. Please pray for: • God’s Word to convict and instill saving faith in the hearts of parents and the community at large at our Feb. 12th Outreach • Breakthroughs and abundant favor with administrators and parents at public schools • Greater clarity in where God is calling us to relocate to, where to hold Sunday worship services at, and what communities we should engage in dynamic ministry in. We thank God for you every day and for your continued partnership in the gospel!

FAITH CHURCH HAMMOND UPDATE
F
aith Church Hammond is in discussion with Trinity Munster to consider the possibility of enfolding them into Faith Church. Trinity has been meeting with the Faith Leadership Team and is prayerfully considering this option. Faith Hammond has partnered with Faith Highland as this possible transition is being explored. If Trinity votes to move forward, then Faith Hammond will relocate to the permanent site in Munster, approximately four miles from our Hammond Campus. Faith Church is and will continue to be committed to our ministry and presence in Hammond. We will continue our partnership with Kids Hope Ministry at Kenwood
Elementary School as well as with other churches, businesses and organizations through the Back to School Backpack Ministry. Our desire is to have a permanent location in Hammond once God opens the door and it becomes available. Please continue to pray for both churches and all involved in this process as they seek God’s heart for our future. If you have any questions, please contact Pastor Charlie Contreras (pastorcharlie@WeAreFaith.org) or Pastor Jason DeVries (pastorjason@WeAreFaith.org). We will communicate regular updates to the congregation as decisions are reached.

FAITH CHURCH SCHERERVILLE UPDATE
I
n early January, Faith Schererville blessed and sent out Pastor Brett and his family as they responded to a call to serve at a church in California. Brett was instrumental in launching Faith Schererville and we are forever grateful for the impact he made and the relationships developed during his ministry with us. During this transition, the campus is hosting one Sunday morning service at 10:00 am and Faith Church pastors as well as other pastors in our networks will be doing pulpit supply. The Campus Leadership Team - Elders Tim Niehof, Kevin Bendle, Gordon Gunnik; Deacons Matt Evers, Jeep Mance, Michael Rich - is providing guidance and care for the church with oversight from Executive Pastor Brian Dennert. You will see many of them
conducting announcements and helping in services alongside their duties as elders and deacons. A search is actively underway for a new pastor who will lead the campus in the next chapter of its journey. The Campus Leadership Team has asked members of Faith Schererville, its Staff and the Leadership Vision Team to be part of the pastoral search team. Resumes are being received and we are excited to already have some strong candidates as part of the search. Please be in prayer for Faith Schererville. Whether you consider Faith Schererville your campus home, or attend another campus but wish to help the church move forward, additional volunteers are needed during this time. Email Pastor Brian at bdennert@wearefaith.org if interested in serving.
