Whether you’ve been attending Faith Church for a long time or you are a first time visitor, THE PAPER is here to help! Being a part of this church family is a partnership in growth, so we encourage you to be involved in 3 ways:

1 | WORSHIP ON THE WEEKENDS Gather with others to listen to a message from God’s Word, sing, pray and lift up the name of Jesus. Attend a service at one of our campuses. Faith Kids (infants5th grade) is a safe place where kids can worship Jesus at their level. Don’t miss the opportunity to gather with others and worship each week. Invite a friend.

2 | CONNECT IN COMMUNITY Being a follower of Jesus was never meant to be done alone. Sole-ranger Christianity usually means discouragement and failure. God has provided a better way- Biblical community. Community keeps us encouraged, helps us build meaningful friendships, and most importantly, helps us grow as Christians. This can be through a Mini-Church, Bible Study or Serving Team. No matter what your age, God does not intend for you to walk through life alone. Be real. Be known.

3 | SERVE OTHERS Join a weekend Serving Team at one of our campuses, serve in your neighborhood or around the world! God has gifted each of us to do something special. Discover the joy of serving.

FAITH FAMILY H IG H L I G H T T H E LO P E Z FA M I LY

WHAT ARE YOUR NAMES? Roy and Laura Lopez.

WHERE ARE YOU FROM? We live in Merrillville, Indiana.

HOW DID YOU GET CONNECTED TO FAITH CHURCH? Through our son David (D-Lo) works for Dyer Faith Church, Technical Arts Team.

WHAT HAVE YOU SEEN GOD DO AT FAITH CHURCH? Laura: I’ve seen how God has worked in other people’s lives and transforms them. Roy: Transform many, many lives from hopless to hopeful, from broken hearts to Christ filled enriched hearts.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY ABOUT THE WORSHIP SERVICES? Laura: I like the worship music and how scripture is preached, explained, and applied to our daily lives. Roy: The music and praise is so uplifting. It prepares my mind, heart and soul to receive the message which it is in itself very profound.

WHERE DO YOU SERVE AT FAITH CHURCH? Laura: I am a leader and volunteer in Faith Kids Nursery; attend Card Connection. Both Roy and I attend 2 mini churches, one with Elmer and Georgian’s group and one with Lee’s group. We pass out programs for 9 and 11am service every 2nd Sunday of the month. Roy: I serve in the Faith Kids Nursery as a teacher for the 2 year olds, twice a month. I also serve as a front line greeter once a month and Laura and I pass out programs once a month. I also serve in building sets for the changing series in the worship center.

HOW DO YOU CONNECT WITH OTHERS AT YOUR CAMPUS? Laura: Sharing life’s experiences with others. Roy: We are in a Mini Church group twice a month on Sunday mornings and on Wednesdays nights with another Mini Church group. I am with the “Band of Brothers” group twice a month on Friday nights. Each group is uniquely different but they all possess a common bond, it is “Jesus Christ”. It is in these groups that I receive hope, encouragement, understanding and strength. Not only in the studying of scriptures but in other members in the group sharing of their personal lives.

WHAT HAVE YOU SEEN GOD DO IN YOUR LIFE? Laura: I’ve seen how God has delivered my husband in his time of need. How God has lead us to Faith Church. Roy: He delivered me.

ANYTHING ELSE YOU WANT TO SHARE? Roy: I know and understand that even though I am saved, it does not make me infallible. I struggle daily with sin. But sin does not rule my life. Daily I am reminded of the price Jesus Christ paid for me. Laura and I both agree that we are truly being spiritually fed here at Faith Church. Not only in the services, but in all the ministries that we are involved in. Faith Church opened it’s doors to us and within a short time God revealed himself to us. All we had to do is open the door to our hearts.

REACHING for a God-sized future is the essence of the REACH Project. Finding the resources to do the work God has placed before us as Faith Church is a challenging goal. God has changed us, grown us, and spread us out into various communities, but the mission remains the same-to reach out to those who are disconnected from God and/or the Christian community. God has provided tools to work out that mission over the past 50 years.

all, but they are important to the stability and growth of the ministry of Faith Church. •

New signage for all campuses with our new logo that reflects our vision.

The Highland campus has remodeled a women’s restroom and is now looking at improving technology to make the balcony experience better and redoing the Great Room to provide a WOW Faith Kids experience.

In Beecher, the parking lot has been expanded and extra space created.

In Schererville, REACH funds provided for a community outreach event, added equipment for worship services, and enabled the remodeling of the chapel at Campagna Academy for their use and our use as a Faith Kids area.

ON THE MOVE

God has taken Faith Church from South Holland, Illinois, to Dyer, Indiana and beyond. Today God’s reach through Faith Church is felt in seven locations around the Northwest Indiana and South Suburbs of Chicago. And God has used the REACH project to allow Faith Church to have a campus in the Dominican Republic and to form a new partnership in Brazil.

BRAZIL PROJECT

Faith Church is partnering with a ministry in Manaus, Brazil, along the Amazon River. The greatest need identified in this remote area is education for the young adults. The next generation is leaving the area in search of employment, and they are unprepared. That combination leads to young adults losing their way and often losing their lives. Faith is joining in a project to provide a Vocational and Training School for the young people of the area who have no access to education. Along with a strong emphasis on evangelism and discipleship, the school will provide a sound biblical base and the skills needed to develop local businesses. We are partnering with the First Presbyterian Church of Manaus, a large Brazilian church with a Godsized vision, to reach the people of the Amazon region by planting churches throughout the region. Funds from the REACH project will help defray the initial building cost and will be used to deepen the partnership by sending teams to help develop various training programs. Please pray for the people of Manaus, Brazil, where opportunities for education, growth and stability have been non-existent. Pray for God to use this partnership to bring hope to the people and glory to God’s Name

MEETING CAMPUS NEEDS

This next phase of REACH projects may not be visible to

AND “SOON TO APPEAR PROJECTS” ARE: •

Family bathroom in Dyer – we need to provide a family facility available to serve many of our worshippers. Whether it is a precious senior who needs some assistance or a Special Needs (Reflectors) student, we need to help them feel comfortable.

Faith Kids in Dyer - when people entrust their children to Faith Kids workers, we want to do everything we can to show we care. One simple way was to re-work the nursery cubbies for our babies.

Atrium rework in Dyer - “One relationship at a time” is a challenge in the current Dyer atrium. Some reconfiguring is in the works to make more conversation opportunities available in this big space.

A new ministry and possibly adding another site in the next few years.

As our facilities are being used for our ministry of reaching people, they gradually wear out, break down, and need attention and improvement. Some things on this list may not have much “WOW” appeal to you, but they all allow ministry to flow more smoothly and they remove hurdles for those who want to worship with us. Everything we do should be to God’s glory!

P URITY BY: TORI PAINO

A

few years ago, my oldest daughter inadvertently purchased a yearlong subscription to Amazon Prime. When we realized what went down, we looked into the details and decided to try it out. Three years later, we don’t know how we lived without it.

Shopping online can be an exhilarating experience. Research, compare, choose, check out, and it’s on the way. After two days of anticipation, the package arrives. During that waiting period, I tend to start wondering what my package might go through before it settles at my doorstep. What if something happened to it (or me) during transit? Is there a chance that I might never receive it? I am a little ashamed to admit that I used to view sin in a similar way. That it was transactional. I sincerely believed I would end up in hell if I committed a sin, neglected to immediately ask God to forgive me for it, and died before I got that opportunity. When I lied to my parents. When a four-letter word slipped out of my lips. Before my head hit the pillow at night. Right when I woke up in the morning ( just in case I had a sinful dream). I was on my proverbial knees begging to be forgiven. Looking back, those times of prayer were motivated not by love but by fear. I was trying to avoid damnation more than I was earnestly seeking communion with my savior. Full disclosure, that was a really warped view of the gospel. I was treating my salvation like a transaction in which I was the buyer and God was the seller. Acting as if I had the primary role in my own justification. This is the opposite of what the Apostle Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 5:21. “For our sake he (God) made him (Jesus) to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” Like buying things online, our salvation is a transaction. But it’s not one for which we have to pay. It was paid for us. 2,000 years ago, by a Jewish carpenter nailed to a wooden cross. His sacrifice means that there is no waiting, no two-day shipping, and no necessary future transactions. Jesus paid it all. It doesn’t matter how messed up we are, what we think we owe, if Jesus is our lord, the tab has been covered. This is God’s amazing grace in action. But this grace does not exist so we can keep sinning yet still avoid hell. Paul warns in Romans 6:15, “What then? Are we to sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means!” God’s grace empowers Christians to live extraordinary lives that impact the world around us for God’s glory and for our joy. Then why should we even pray for forgiveness? Praying is a great reminder that we’re not in control and it connects us with the one who is in control. It’s time to stop treating God’s forgiveness like a product that we need to purchase. Like my Amazon Prime membership, it’s already been purchased. But unlike that, it’s now being offered to us at no cost, free shipping, and instantaneous delivery. Sign me up.

RESTORING THE WORLD

ONE RELATIONSHIP AT A TIME BY: JASON DEVRIES

T

o me, “Restoring and Transforming the World One Relationship at a Time” takes me to the story of Nick, Jeremy, and Robin. Nick and Jeremy work together at a produce company. Nick is a mechanic who would see Jeremy everyday in the warehouse and Jeremy would yell out to him, “Nick!!!!” One day Nick realized he hadn’t heard his name called in a few days even though Jeremy had been there. As he was passing through the warehouse, he felt prompted to ask Jeremy what was going on. Jeremy responded that he was facing a lot of troubles, especially at home and in his marriage. After talking for a while, Nick asked Jeremy to come with him to church. He shared that his troubles were often put into perspective and he felt better after going to church. Jeremy went with Nick to church, and the Lord grabbed a hold of his life. Jeremy surrendered his life to Jesus in the Prayer Room following the service. Here’s where Robin comes in. Robin is Jeremy’s wife who now has a completely different husband in her house--the type of husband she has longed for. She is wondering what has happened to cause this change in his life, so she comes to church to check it out. The Lord grabs a hold of her life and she surrenders to Him. Jeremy and Robin’s marriage and their whole family are experiencing the healing power of Jesus Christ because a mechanic name Nick was willing to ask, “Hey Jeremy, what’s up? Why aren’t you calling my name anymore?” Nick’s act wasn’t amazing; he was just obedient to God’s call to talk to Jeremy. Our amazing Savior took it from there. If we are going to live into our call to restore and transform the world one relationship at a time, we need to be in relationships. In the midst of the busyness of life, we need to take time to ask people, “What’s up?” Then, we need to watch our God do amazingly more than we could ask or imagine. May we all be as obedient as Nick!

R

ecently, Faith Church had the opportunity to host Qes Tadessa, president of Onesimus Nesib Seminary in Aira Ethiopia, and Dr. Tariku, Chief Surgeon of Aira Hospital. It was the first time e ither had been to Faith Church, and we experienced a relaxing evening of fellowship with some of our pastor sponsors. This partnership between Faith Church and the Aira area is more than 20 years old and has deep roots within the RCA. In our time together it was exciting to learn how quickly the church is growing in Ethiopia, and that most pastors have 4-6 congregations under their care. People are coming to Christ very quickly; the need for educated pastors is increasing exponentially. Faith Church sponsors pastors in Ethiopia to complete their formal education so they can continue to reach the far corners of Ethiopia. This is just one way Faith Church is impacting the world through our focus area in Leadership Development.

Talking Bibles International came to us about three years ago. After partnering with both Paul and Mark Hoekstra for several decades, we were prompted to take on a specialized project in Southeast India. This project included placing about 1,000 Talking Bibles (Audio Bibles) among fishing villages in the Andra Padesh area. TBI had identified a unique need among illiterate fisherman and responded to this need by placing Talking Bibles in the area with help from Paul Keshore, a pastor with whom they had built a relationship. Pastor Paul distributes the talking bibles within the fishing village for the fisherman to utilize while out on weeklong fishing journeys. When they return they gather to further discuss and apply the scripture they have listened to. Through this target focus over the last four years, Faith has been able to use Talking Bibles to effectively reach an Unreached People Group. What a unique way to disciple an unreached community in the word!

After 8 years of partnership, we are able to celebrate the completion of World Vision’s involvement in the area of Karaba, Rwanda. World Vision excels at Community Development and has specific criteria for each community they are involved in which include water, sanitation, education, and housing. It is so exciting to have been able to come alongside the community of Karaba for this season and see them reach these goals. We are happy to know that our sponsored children have access to clean water, education, and the healthcare they need in order to grow physically strong and that they have the faith community around them to become strong in the word. While we will continue to pray for “our kids,” it is a blessing to know that not only they, but all children in Karaba, will have access to the tools they need to grow old and to impact the world in great ways. We look forward to hearing more about the new community of Simbi in the coming year and to having opportunities to come alongside this community through child sponsorship and running with Team World Vision for clean water.

Henry Nouwen once wrote, “We are not called to save the world, solve all the problems, and help all people. But each of us has our own unique call, in our families, in our work, in our world…” Four years ago, our mission team felt Faith’s unique call to mission in three distinct areas: Leadership Development, Community Development, and Unreached People Groups. With so many ways to be involved around the world we feel this focus allows us to have incredible tangible impact. While we continue to partner with numerous missionaries and organizations doing great work, our ability to have focus in these tangible ways has allowed for us to have unique global relationships in ways we never would have imagined. As we continue to press on and engage in our world, I encourage you to also seek to discover your own unique call in your family, in your work, and in your world, and I invite you to come alongside Faith Church in mission.

FAITH SANTO DOMINGO UPDATE HI EVERYONE! Our campus is growing strong in discipleship and small groups! New couples have joined our fellowship and we are encouraged by the level of buy-in that people have in this new ministry. We are encouraged by the five new believers who are close to completing baptism classes and who will be baptized in the coming weeks. We also have 8-10 people who are being discipled and who will soon register for the new round of baptism classes coming in November. We feel as though things are turning for the better in this church plant, mostly due to the fact that people hungry for God are turning out at our small group gatherings but also at Sunday worship. Five small groups are now operating and going strong. To keep up with the demands to open up new small groups, we are currently training four individuals to lead small groups, and another six or so will start training by late November. Our goal is to have ten small groups fully operating and organically growing by the first half of 2017. Our Faith Kids ministry is also solid, but we need more volunteers to make a greater and more efficient impact. As part of our conversation with FC leaders and the RCA’s Missions Department, I am on track in identifying and/or raising up an indigenous leadership capable of eventually taking over the reins of this first FC campus, thereby affording me the opportunity to go forth in leading an apostolic gospel-movement throughout the island. It is our

prayer that more and more FC campuses would be added in the D.R. We need your prayers for the Lord to send workers to the harvest fields and to give us favor with other passionate, spiritual leaders who will join us in shaping a gospel movement in the D.R. Finally, we would like to report that with your prayers and financial support, FC Santo Domingo will move in to its own location by December 1, 2016! Our small group is fully committed and pumped by the possibility of moving to our own church space. This 120+ seating space is located in a commercial plaza in the “heart of the city” and has great parking, security and electric power amenities. Many are the challenges, but we are trusting God for breakthroughs in provision to purchase big-ticket items, for new families to join our fellowship, and for an outpouring of His Spirit to melt hearts and give us an onslaught of favor and influence in the island! We need your continued prayers in this exciting work of seeing people transformed by the power of the Cross! So please pray for our potential “Hard Launch” this winter. As you may know, Hurricane Matthews recently passed through the D.R. On this side of Hispaniola we mostly got torrential rains; however, Haiti was devastated and reports have come out that 1000 or more precious lives were lost. Please pray for our brothers and sisters in Haiti! “May the God of all grace…restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.”
