A GUIDE TO MARRIAGE AT FAITH CHURCH

Congratulations and thank you for inquiring about our facilities for your upcoming wedding. Your wedding is one of the most joyful occasions in your life, and we are honored to be a part of this special event. While marriage is a lifelong process of merging two lives together, the wedding ceremony is the event that inaugurates this process. A Christian wedding acknowledges marriage as a covenant relationship, or livelong commitment to live together as husband and wife. Thus, a Christan wedding is an act of worship before God in which family and friends gather

“...But the greatest of these is love.” 1 Corinthians 13:13b

to praise God for His grace and love expressed through marriage. The love of God, as experienced in our personal covenant relationship with Christ, becomes the foundation for giving and receiving human love in the covenant of marriage. Couples who desire to be married at Faith Church or by one of our pastors at Faith Church will have an initial consultation with a Faith Church Pastor and/ or Elder. We are committed to building strong marriages built upon His Word. With this understanding of a Christian marriage and wedding ceremony, we have prepared this booklet and these guidelines to help your wedding be an occasion to celebrate God’s love, to acknowledge Him as the source of love, and to help your wedding ceremony go as smoothly as possible. See Appendix E for a check list of various items that will need to be addressed as you plan your wedding.

Faith Church is part of the Reformed Church in America (RCA) and is guided by its guidelines. The Order of Worship for Christian Marriage can be obtained by contacting your Wedding Coordinator. She will also be working with you to help you plan your wedding ceremony.

Order of Worship

Your Wedding Coordinator has vows you may use. You are also free to compose and use your own vows; the vows should include a lifetime commitment of faithfulness, mutual fidelity, and a sharing of your total life with your spouse. All vows written by the couple require the approval of the Pastor. You can review and finalize your personalized vows when you have your final appointment with him. Role of Pastor

Worship and Marriage services at Faith Church are led by one of its Ordained Pastoral Staff, Campus Pastors or an Elder. They are glad to share the worship service with an Ordained Pastor from another church or denomination; however, final Consistory approval is required for any pastor to participate in or to perform the ceremony. Denominational credentials of ordination may be required by the Consistory prior to approval. Should the couple select a pastor other than from Faith Church, the pastoral fee will be the couple’s responsibility. The Pastoral Staff will require an initial meeting with the couple in order to confirm their wedding request. The Pastor will make the final decision as to whether he will marry the couple. Each Pastor will meet approximately 1-3 times in addition to this initial meeting to discuss the couples relationship, future marriage and wedding content. Please schedule these meetings through the Pastor’s Assistant. Available Staff Pastors include: Reverend Mike Pitsenberger // Barb Wondaal Pastor Charlie Contreras // Valerie Dillon Pastor Dave Weemhoff // Leanne Mast Reverend Jason DeVries // Lori Hofstra Pastor Nathan Prairie // Leanne Mast Pastor Brad Haitsma // Leanne Mast Pastor Brett Dood // Barb Wondaal

All weddings will utilize the services of a Wedding Coordinator (WC) who will be assigned to your wedding approximately 4-6 months before your wedding day. The WC should not be confused with a personal assistant, rather, the WC is primarily a pastoral assistant and church liaison. A WC assists you in planning and coordinating the details of your wedding service

Role of Wedding Coordinator

by answering specific questions and giving suggestions for your wedding ceremony. The WC will conduct the wedding rehearsal and be onsite to assist the Pastor and wedding party on the wedding day until the service is over. This is to ensure that your wedding ceremony will flow as smoothly as possible. If you are planning a reception at Faith, please talk to the Staff Wedding Coordinator when booking your wedding date. The Coordinator’s primary role is to bring all aspects of the reception at Faith together in order to run smooth. They are not “personal attendants” or “decorators”, nor are they in charge of cleaning up kitchen serving supplies or personal decorations. **Your Coordinator is not responsible for any reception needs outside of Faith Church. Proof of counseling is required for those not using the Faith Church wedding/marriage preparations You are required to take the PREPARE Inventory which you will pay for and take online. The cost for this is $35 and can be paid for by Credit Card on the PREPARE website, which can be accessed via the link provided by the Marriage Ministry Director via email. Music Selection Since the wedding is a worship service, the music selected should reflect the reverence of the occasion. Therefore, music sung or played at your wedding service should place the emphasis on the glorification of God. Music that reflects the Christian tradition, whether classical or contemporary, is appropriate. All music selected, both instrumental and vocal, must be pre-approved by the Wedding Coordinator one month prior to the wedding. If the instrumentalist does not have a copy of the music selected, it is the responsibility of the couple to provide it. It is the responsibility of the bride

Optional Components Of The Wedding Service

and groom to contact musicians and vocalists in order to communicate about the music for your wedding day (see Appendix F for a list of possible musicians and/or vocalists). Please do not not ask the church musicians to use photocopied material; copyright laws should be respected and honored. Traditionally music is played 15-20 minutes for the Prelude. There are many options that can be used (i.e. ensembles, solos, duets, instrumental music, congregational singing, or a combination of these). Your selected instrumentalists and/or Wedding Coordinator can provide you with valuable assistance in selecting your music.

Instrumentalists It is the wedding couple’s responsibility to select their instrumentalist for the wedding service. The Wedding Coordinator can give you guidance in selecting an instrumentalist. (See Appendix F) All musicians should coordinate their own practice times and plan on attending the rehearsal if possible.

Vocalists The Wedding Coordinator can give you guidance in selecting vocalists. (See Appendix F) Vocalists needing accompaniment are asked to contact the accompanist directly to coordinate their practice time. All special music selections are required to be pre-approved by the Wedding Coordinator.

Policy for couples requesting communion at their wedding. Faith Church does not serve the Sacrament of Communion at wedding ceremonies. We believe that we have sound Biblical reasons for this decision. First we believe that has to do with God’s desire for communion

Appendix C Premarital Covenant

is to be shared within the Christian body. Having communion between only a bride and groom limits the entire body of Christ. The second reason for our decision relates to receiving communion as an entire body at a wedding ceremony. The Bible asks us to take communion seriously - to examine ourselves, and prepare ourselves for the sacrament. Therefore, Holy Communion served during the celebration of a wedding ceremony does not allow proper examination and preparedness for each person in attendance of the wedding ceremony. We believe that one of the reasons couples desire to have communion during their ceremony is to honor Christ and to make their marriage ceremony special. We welcome creative ways to honor Christ, but ask couples to look outside of the sacraments to accomplish this.

We are committed to God’s ways in preparing for our marriage. We share our marriage vows together. We believe it is God’s will for our lives and marriage to be sanctified, or set apart for pure and holy living as declared in Scripture.. “It is God’s will that you be sanctified; that you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honorable...For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life. Therefore, He who rejects this instruction does not reject man but rejects God, who gives you His Holy Spirit.” 1 Thessalonians 4:3-8 We also understand that God does not look at our past failures. Instead, He looks at us as broken people, who He can make anew. With His forgiveness, we can start all over again. As we ask God to forgive us through Jesus, He will see us as a completely new couple. “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9

We seek to trust God and honor Him by upholding His parameters of sexual intimacy within the context of our future marriage. We believe that with God’s power, we will be able to keep this covenant and be greatly blessed by our obedience to Him.
