Exploring the edgy and colourful side of life, the second issue of Runway Duchess explores the dynamics of colour in the midst of the cold. Ignoring the dark, subtle elements of winter, this issue celebrates colour with a touch of edge. Warm sunny tones, bright florals for lucheons and denims bring forth the much needed sunshine in winter. Showcasing the theme of colour of this issue, is cover girl Cleo 'Ice Queen' the Zambian rapper and former BBA Housemate who is radiant with bright tones and summerly hair on the cover. Read the cover story as she answers our 21 questions enthusiastically.

Hidden gem ISABEL KUMWEMBE FOUNDER OF CHANCO: PROJECT REJUVENATION Young and loaded with dreams, Isabel Kumwembe carries a good head on her shoulders. At such a young age, she has made a name for herself with "Project Rejuvenation", which she founded while still in college with the aim of renovating her school's structures. what we were doing is more than rehabilitating, we were advocating, we were showing our frustration in a positive way-I call it “demonstrating through demonstrating.
All I wanted and expected from this project was to help the college fix up one classroom. Initially, I just thought I could at least raise money to purchase one blackboard which would probably make one classroom look better; however the project grew beyond my expectations and dreams. The beauty for me stems from multiple aspects. First of all the having people believe in me was something I treasured. Trusting me enough to tamper with a monumental institution such as Chancellor College was an honour to me, and I did not take the opportunity lightly. Secondly having people join the cause showed to me that people care and that is very important. Getting the larger community involved, and so much support was amazing. But the feeling I get when I walk past these two classrooms of which I led renovations is indescribable. Watching lecturers and students learn in a classroom I helped renovate makes my heart smile.
You have to prove that you have a concrete idea and that investing in it is worth it. Quite frankly, people thought I was crazy and that the idea was insane. Lucky for me I came across the Art and Global Health Center who foster young leadership and look for ideas that will positively impact society. Through Students With Dreams, a program of the Art and Global Health Center, I had a great team to brainstorm with and shape my project. I really wish there were more organizations like the Art and Global Health Center who are willing to invest in such ideas, but keeping my open for such organizations was key to the project’s success.
Project rejuvenation has become quite a success with big companies like NICO sponsoring the projects, how did you manage to attract such big corporations? Through the media, being on national television and in the newspapers, we have gotten great exposure. In fact, NICO Life Insurance read about the work we are doing in the newspapers, and they communicated with me about their desire to donate to the cause. They donated K1 million to us.
What has been the highlight for you individually since you undertook this How has this helped Project task? rejuvenation? Since the inception of this project This has helped project rejuvenation by showing that we are an organization there have been many highlights. I that can be trusted, and that is credible. think, for me individually, the reactions I have gotten from people have been priceless. I have walked What obstacles has the project met along the way and how did you deal with around in town and on more than one occasion have had people come up to them? Fundraising is a as myself could initiate such a great project. Students at Chancellor very complex issue. College consider me a role model now, and I have been featured in some college news articles, and invited to speak at a Sociology Society event. Hearing people talk of the
people talk of the project with passion re-energizes me and I’m honoured by the appreciation people have had. Even in my very home, hearing my little sister say she is impressed by me and is motivated to be a change maker in her community gives me an unspeakable joy. My father and mother express their pride in me and have jokingly nick-named me “Project Rejuvenation,” as have many others, but for me knowing that people have been inspired is everything to me.
"We all have the power to influence. If you care about something, and have a burning desire o matter how little you think your contribution maybe, go for it."
What’s next for project rejuvenation and how do you plan on achieving this? In 2013, we rehabilitated two lecture rooms. In 2014, we intend to go back to these lecture rooms, and devise a system where we have routine maintenance of these rooms, as practice-to ensure that we do not fall in the trap of waiting for things to fall apart, before we address them. We will continue to reach out to various stakeholders for donations, and we will continue writing proposals to various organizations to support us, or adopt a room or hostel to renovate at Chancellor College. We will continue to advocate strongly for this cause, and will not stop until we get Chancellor College back in shape.
What words of encouragement would you have for a fellow youth who has aspirations like yours but lacks the courage or support to see them through? “I am only one person, and I cannot do everything, but just because I cannot do everything, does not mean that I will refuse to do that e which I can,” is one of my favourite quotations. We all have the power to influence. If you care about something, and have a burning desire to pursue it -no matter how little you think your contribution maybe, go for it. That little contribution you make could be the igniting spark of a global fire.

Different countries were represented as the event attracted a variety o guesty who gathered to honor black films deserving much needed recognition.
Founded in 1992 by Danny Glover, Ja'net DuBois and Ayuko Babu who felt need to celebrate our African heritage, it was very inspiring to see some the films at the event originating straight from Africa.
One particular film that I was more than happy to see get the recognition 'Umunthu' by rising Malawian filmmaker Mwizalero Nyirenda.
Umunthu is a 30 minute "first person documentary investigating toleranc politics and culture in relationship to gay rights through the lens of the Pa African concept of Umuntu".

Dapper means smart and the restaurant reflects the excellent standards stated in the name. The restaurant is intimately cosy, with beautiful table settings that add a touch of elegance to the whole environment. Even the meals served are super smart and delicious with just a blink of an eye.

treasures of Zomba
It was the last day of second term, my dad picked me up earlier than usual, and as I got into the car I remembered this time we were going t have to drive further than we normally had to. For two weeks before I had gone back to boarding school we had moved. We had left the beloved capital city, I once called home and we were now living in a small unheard of town in the middle of nowhere. I held back the tears. It took me years to appreciate the vast realm of beauty that I woke up everyday. But when I did, it changed my perspective on life forever. As Africans we’re sometimes blinded and we fail to appreciate all the beauty that is around us.
Zomba is a small city situated in southern Malawi amongst the Shire highlands. It is famous for its British colonial architecture, diverse cultural mix, but most importantly the breathtaking Zomba plateau. When I moved here, six years ago, I had no idea what this little city (then town) had to offer me. I despised my parents for taking me away from the city life that I so dearly held close only to be stuck in a place that was surrounded by rocks and trees. But I was wrong. I would spend hours watching TV fantasizing about what a lovely life I would have when I went outside the country. And eventually, I did go outside the country, only to have my eyes opened to all the beauty that I had left behind me.

I came home and I often spoke about wishing to travel the world, to beautiful places and that’s when I made a decision, I was going to see beautiful places but I was going to start at home. At first the only place I knew that was remotely beautiful to me at the time was a hotel up the Zomba Mountain called Ku Chawe Inn.
Sunbird Ku Chawe is one of Malawi’s premiere mountain resorts and one of the best places to fully take in the vast and beautiful countryside that Malawi has to offer. The hotel stands overlooking the Zomba Plateau which rises to nearly 2200m above sea level and around this hotel are some of the most stunning views to be seen in all of Africa and I loved this place But as time went by, I dedicated more time to exploring what other wonders my little town had to offer me and I was not left disappointed. The area surrounding Ku Chawe has some of the most beautiful scenery one can ever come across and I was left in awe as to how I had missed out on this beauty for so long.
Next to the hotel you have the Plateau stables with over twenty of the most majestic creatures I have ever seen in my life. I had never been on a horse before but when I saw these divine creatures in front of me, I understood that Zomba was exactly the place I was meant to be. I have dedicated my time wherever I can, to make that little effort to go explore other unknown realms in my now beloved city of Zomba. And it has become a custom that with each new trip comes a whole vast array of memories and knowledge that I could not have gained elsewhere.

I’ve learned from exploring all these amazing places that, you can never stumble across something amazing if you don’t have even the smallest inclination to look for it. I had live in Zomba for four years before discovered that it was one of the most beautiful places I could have ever imagined. So one needs to open their eyes to beauty in order to see and feel beauty.
